The Knicks have one final roster spot available to give to a veteran on a vet minimum contract. New York has checked in on a number of players, but now they’re targeting a defensive specialist. According to reports, the Knicks want to add Marcus Smart in free agency to this roster. Let’s go ahead and break down all of these latest reports today. Shout out to Steph Bondi with the New York Post for giving us this following information. According to them, per a source, the Knicks are monitoring the situation with Marcus Smart, and they’re waiting to see if he’s going to be bought out by the Washington Wizards. And if he is, the Knicks will likely target him and try to add him to this team. Bondi continues here by stating, “Per a source, the Knicks are monitoring the situation with Marcus Smart, who is a buyout candidate currently under contract with the Washington Wizards. If Smart indeed hits free agency, he’ll have a bunch of suitors, and I’m guessing other teams can offer more guaranteed playing time than the Knicks can. But at his maximized self, Smart is an elite on ball defender who brings a toughness and a little bit of craziness that the Knicks were missing last season and tried to acquire by signing PJ Tucker late into the season. You guys know me. If you’re fans of this channel, then you already know. Truly, I do not want the Knicks to add another guard in free agency because when you look at this team, what we really need is another wing. However, if the Knicks are not going to go in that direction, if they’re firm on the decision to add another veteran guard in free agency, then honestly speaking, Marcus Smart might be one of the best options available right now. Not only is he defensiveminded, he also brings playoff experience and he comes off the bench at the vet minimum. That is an absolute steal. And during free agency, that’s exactly what the Knicks have been doing. Gerson Yabastelli steal. Jordan Clarkson steel. And if they get Marcus Smart on the vet minimum, that will be an absolute steal. He is exactly the type of player the Knicks need on this team. He brings experience and he also brings a toughness like Steph Bondi was just stating there. But that experience and his presence as a veteran on this team pushing this Knicks team to be better when maybe they don’t want to be or maybe they’re down 10 or 15 points and they’ve checked out of the game. Players like Marcus Smart, they’ll wake up this Knicks team. They’ll remind them that the game is not over. It’s still in reach. And if they do their best, they can potentially win. That’s exactly what they had PJ Tucker on this team for, to bring that veteran voice. But in this situation, they not only get a veteran in Marcus Smart, they get a veteran who can still ball out, who can still contribute at a very high level and still have an impact no matter if he’s starting or coming off the bench. And that’s why if Smart wants to still win a championship and wants to give himself the best opportunity to do that, he can join this Knicks team on the vet minimum. But the only problem is a lot of other teams are going to want to add Marcus Smart. And they’ll probably have more to offer than the vet minimum and the lack of playing time that he’s likely going to get on this Knicks team. We have to be real here. Even though the Knicks want all of these players, they’re likely not going to get all of these players for one reason or another. But in my opinion, the biggest issue is playing time. They can’t guarantee anybody any playing time at this point in time. That’s because their starting five basically already set and their bench unit, we already know four of them. If Mike Brown goes to 10 players, then maybe we’ll have a question mark on exactly who that 10th player is, but we already know they’re looking to add a veteran in free agency. Whoever that veteran is, it’s likely they’re going to be that 10th player in the rotation. That means there’s no more room for anybody else to play. Not really significant or consistent minutes. And we have no idea how long that 10th player is going to be on the floor for under Mike Brown. A lot of question marks and they’re going to remain questions until the season starts. But as of right now, we already know playing time is limited. Whoever joins this team, they need to understand that. That also begs the question, besides Marcus Smart, what other players are the Knicks looking at in free agency right now? Shout out to Ian Begley of SNY for giving us this following information here. According to him, also the Knicks have enough money for one more veteran on a vet minimum contract and one rookie contract before they reach the second apron. They have been in touch with players who can fill a backup guard role in free agency. So, if they add a backup guard with that final roster spot, it would potentially clog a pathway for Tyler Kle. Who might the Knicks sign with that veterans minimum deal? They have continued to touch base with Ben Simmons during free agency. I’m sure they have also touched base with other vets as well, too. Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook are among the lead guards still available on the market. Teams are wondering if Washington will agree to buy out veteran guard Marcus Smart. For what it’s worth, the Knicks don’t seem to be exclusively focused on ball handling guards with that last roster spot. New York still sees Landry Sheam as a possibility and Shamut remains open on returning to New York. If we’re only talking about guards, I would love the Knicks to go after Marcus Smart, Russell Westbrook, or Chris Paul. But with Chris Paul, he likely wants to stay on the West Coast, closer to his family, so he’s likely out. With Westbrook, he likely wants a bigger role. He wants to play more minutes. The Knicks don’t have that to offer. With Marcus Smart, it’s really a question mark. If he gets bought out, the Knicks will definitely be interested, but the Knicks can only offer the vet minimum and not that much playing time. Other teams, they can offer more money and more playing time. That might mean Marcus Smart might not be the way the Knicks go. So, if you look at the rest of the market, it’s Ben Simmons, Landry Shamut, and a couple of other available guards. Within that situation, I would love if the Knicks are able to add back Landry Shamut. He can play defense and he can also shoot that three ball very well. And if the Knicks played him more minutes in the postseason, maybe he would have had a bigger impact this time around under Mike Brown, maybe that happens. And I would love to see that shooting featured a little bit more. If the Knicks can’t add any of those names I first mentioned, then adding back Landry Shamut is a great direction to go in because again, he can do multiple things on the floor and he’s not a liability. He can shoot and he can defend. You can say whatever you want to say about his size, but other than that, he makes up for it for very strong play on both sides of the ball. the Knicks getting him on the vet minimum. It would be another steal. Not to mention, he has chemistry already built with this Knicks team. We’ve already said it for a number of times already. You can’t buy chemistry and you can’t trade for it. With Landry Shamut, you already have it. I don’t know what direction the Knicks are going to go in free agency. It looks like they’re targeting a veteran guard, but hopefully they pivot and they target a veteran wing because honestly that’s really the spot that we need to fill right now. And if we’re able to do that, at the ve minimum, no less, it will be a great move by this Knicks team. They have been making great move after great move after great move. So Leon Rose in this Knicks fun office, I fully expect them to make another great move in free agency. But whether they’re trying to add a guard or a wing, either way, it’s going to be the right decision. Leon Rose is going to be the one making that decision. And every time we look at him, he is always doing what’s best for this Knicks team. So, if he adds a guard or he adds a wing, best believe that was the right move to make at this point in time and that’s why he made it. But don’t get me wrong here. I’m not saying another move isn’t coming. There is definitely something lingering under the surface that nobody is talking about right now. Things are very quiet on the trade market, but right now with the Knicks, it looks like they’re focused building this team in the right way. And then maybe if something happens on the trade market, something that nobody expected. But clearly the Knicks are waiting for at that point the Knicks will pounce and try to get a deal done. But at this point, it’s clear the Knicks are looking to build out this roster in the best way possible. So that way they have the best Knicks team available going into next season. And honestly, that’s the best way to move forward. Keep all of your assets in case that player you want becomes available for trade. And if not, build this roster out in the best way possible by signing the best free agents available. And right now, that’s exactly what the Knicks are doing. But what about you guys? What do you think about the Knicks targeting Marcus Smart in free agency? Let me know how you feel about that in the comments section below, guys, because honestly, I would love to hear from you. But that’s going to do it for this episode. I hope you enjoyed it and if you did, go ahead and smash that like button, leave a comment below, and of course, guys, please subscribe to the channel. Until next time, Nick fans, take care of yourself, your families, and each other. Peace and love.

  1. Marcus Smart is a solid pick up but my concerns are will he be that dog on defense and toughness & fiery player on the floor. Smart can defend 1-3 so the need of a wing isn’t that much of a loss just height. But in Memphis and definitely in Washington Smart lost his fire- understandably. But he needs to lose some weight and get that fire back if we get him. Smart’s fire will get him playing time alone, meaning he will steal minutes from Hart bcuz he’s a more impactful offensive player.

  2. Marcus smart will be a good fit for the knicks all he have to do is improve his shooting abilities and you give him playing time when other players are not playing so good

  3. Out bench was garbage last year, and the front office clearly realizes it. Journeyman won’t cut it on a team with championship aspirations. Load it up, figure it out later as long as the attitudes don’t clash!

  4. I know you really don’t like him, but if you look at the player and not the name…

Ben Simmons checks all ur boxes.

Knicks could use PG depth in a ball handling distributor who can score when needed… Simmons can do that.

They need 2 way wing depth… Simmons can do that.

I’m not saying he’s going to be what people thought he would turn into a few years ago, but for the vet min, as one of the last roster pieces, you don’t get much more versatile than a guy who can literally come off the bench and play 1 through 4.

  5. The way Tyler Kolek played yesterday, really bad. I blame the NY Knicks getting Marcus Smart and making him the #3 PG over PG Kolek as insurance.
    No problem.
