What went wrong for Indiana Pacers in summer league L vs OKC? Johnny Furphy + Taelon Peter stand out
Summer League game two for the Pacers. Not so fun. No revenge against the Thunder. They get thumped after a nice start actually. Johnny Furvy doing some fun stuff. Tayen Peter pretty cool. Enrique Freeman better. Everybody else quite a lot to talk about on today’s Locked On Pacers podcast. You are Locked on Pacers, your daily Indiana Pacers podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. What’s up everybody? Happy Sunday/we and welcome in to another edition of the Locked On Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always. My name’s Tony East. I cover the team for Forbes and today for the last time from my Vegas hotel room, summer league to discuss. Game two, Pacers Thunder. Surely the most meaningful Pacers Thunder game of the year. Right. Right. Uh did not go very well for the Pacers. My they forced a game nine. Jokes are all ruined. The Thunder crushed the Pacers with good defense. The Pacers shot 40% from the field. They couldn’t buy a three. They had 19 turnovers and particularly really missed Quinton Jackson and his rim pressure. He missed his game with some leg soreness, I believe. I can’t I I I was told about it before the game and and posted it, but I can’t remember the exact phrasing. Uh it is yes, left leg soreness. So, a big rim pressure guy gone who guided their comeback last time, but they were missing a lot of things uh in this game that did not really go the Pacers way. I wouldn’t call it a lot to clean up necessarily, but that this is the second straight game where you know a big part of the Pacers deficit that was built like half first half of that Cavs game and really half the third quarter too. Their defense didn’t look very good. I still very vividly remember cuz I was sitting right by the play the Cavs running a pick and roll in the first half of that first game. Two player one player rolls to the rim, one player cuts from the weak side. They are both wide open under the basket. So no one was with the cutter, nobody’s with the Roman, nobody pinched in. Right. The Pacers have had some defensive issues out in Vegas. And I think that’s kind of been one of my bigger takeaways so far. Like the Thunder shot 54% in the summer league game and made 41% of the threes. Like they were generating good shots, you know, even though they had their own turnover issues, but they they were just living inside. They made 32s in this game. The Pacers made 28 total shots. I know summer league is more about the individuals, but a lot of the individual defense from the Pacers in these games has not been particularly good. Uh I don’t know how to say. I think it’s Barnheiser, the kid from Northwestern was terrific. Like, he was getting shots he wanted. His defense was pesky. AJ Mitchell was creating really well for his teammates. This Leon Center they were playing was very good. Topic was whipping that ball around. He was driving into the paint whenever he wanted, right? They just got a lot of nice success. The Thunder did being able to get into the paint. And so, keep that in mind as I talk about the individuals because I think that’s more important in summer league is individuals. Keep that in mind as I talk about them that a lot of the the Pacers struggles in this game, they couldn’t get the easy chances in transition. and it didn’t have Quinton Jackson driving to the rim breaking down a defense and in in an individual level I would say basically everybody needs to be a little bit better on the defensive end out there. I thought Fury’s had some nice possessions standing up his man sliding his feet right he’s always going to play physical Freeman we’ll get to had a really nice rebounding game again he’s finishing possessions Cam Jones was battling at least in this game I thought he needed to be a little better but I was encouraged by that they had some nice steals guys off the bench Taylor Peter continues to be better than I expected on defense but in general especially from a team defense level they’ve got to be more connected that’s going to help everything but no one is here for deep analysis of a summer league game because it is a summer league game you want to hear about the individuals and I think that is obviously, as I’ve done for many of summer league, the most important thing to take out of it. And I think the same thing that I think would have been the lead story had he not gotten hit in the eye and played all of game one and potentially what I consider the biggest story and player to watch for the Pacers in summer league continues to be a oh kind of deal. Johnny Fury, what what an interesting start to summer for He only played nine minutes in that Cavs game, which was, you know, unfortunate because he had some nice drives, a steal, a three in that stretch where it was clear that he was like comfortable being the Pacers number one option, right? And I I think that’s kind of the best way to summarize it now that I’ve had two days to sit on it and have been able to watch it back. And I wondered how that would look against a better defensive team and without Quinton Jackson, they need him to be a rim pressure guy. I remember last year in summer league thinking like every so often Fury would cut or put the ball on the floor and he got farther or got more out of it than I thought. But this year he’s like kind of undeniable when he’s had some speed or had a chance to drive with the ball and he did that again in this game. He had a couple beautiful drives early to get to the rim. Four assists for Fury tied for the team lead in assists. That says a lot about the Pacers struggles in this game, but also like an improvement there from him kicking it on the drives. You know, someone mentioned again to me today like the thought that like maybe he could be a rotation player sooner than later. This would be a big step for him because I know a lot of what I talked about with him watching in summer league is like everybody knows about this nose for the ball. He’s pretty good on the glass for his size. He plays physical despite his stature although that despite might need to go away. We’ll talk about that in a second. He needs to find a way to be efficient and I think naturally given his position everybody went jump shot including me, right? He’s got to make threes and I still think he has to make threes and that was definitely the worst thing he did in this game. He missed all six of his three-point attempts. you’d like that to be better as the Pacers, but he went five for six on twos and he was driving really well early in that Cavs game. That has been the most like, oh wow, like new skill thing from summer league is that Johnny Fury has legitimate like pop toward the rim, handling the ball stuff going on for him in a way that I don’t I mean it wasn’t not there last year, right? Johnny Fury is like a talented young player, but it’s definitely more consistent. He had this was kind of a transition play so it’s not perfect to call it a drive but off a board was pushing up the floor behind the back one-handed finish in the first quarter that I was just like oh my god Johnny Fury highlight machine like he is actually causing defensive issues with this rim pressure and so obviously if you’re the Pacers you’d love for him to blend that with a jump shot but that play was fantastic Rick Carile Andrew Nehard sitting courtside they’re both clapping right four boards at that time for Furby he was hitting the glass early like they he was really good at a lot of different stuff in this game. You know, the again the jump shots got to be a little bit better. Two turnovers is fine given how much he’s handling the ball. He like everybody could be better from a team defense level. Although like a couple guys being bad on team defense means everybody is regardless. That has that has been to me maybe beyond Q because he was so good in the first game, but like I know he’s good at this stuff. Fury’s more developing. He’s six years younger than Quinn Jackson. The biggest one thing from Pacers summer league so far that matters the most for the future of the Pacers is like, okay, Johnny Fury’s doing more stuff. He is not, I’m a young kid. I’m going to be stationary, make some shots, cut when I’m needed, drive when there’s space, all that kind of stuff. He’s like, I can be a forceful like get around you with some wiggle kind of player. And another part of this that’s been fascinating is he we talked to him at practice and then Kevin Pritchard revealed after we talked to him that he added these 20 pounds. And that’s true. That’s great and you can see it like he doesn’t look like huge but it’s so one thing is you can see how it’s helping him right when he bumps into guys he’s like not knocked off them or anything. The other thing that Isaac Jacob the summer league head coach noted is he has gotten that athleticism added with that. Like a lot of guys add weight and it like can shift your jumper a little bit because you have more muscle or you’re bigger so you you you know you’re not quite as bouncy. He has been able to just purely translate that into like more ability, right? And I think that is good. Uh obviously for the Pacers, he wants to keep adding. I think you know his he we talked about his weight gain today. It’s a lot of in the gym like weightlifting gym kind of stuff. So I think that is has so far been purely additive for him and he looks more filled out. He wants to be even more filled out, he said. But I think he’s playing quite well and showing a new skill which I find to be particularly important uh for him as he tries to find a way to be more efficient. Five for 12 is efficiency. It’s only 42% but like he makes one three and this game looks drastically different. Then he’s six for 12 with 14 points. He’s got to get to the line a little more on these drives. But an impressive thing from in in the midst of a bad game and a bad first half of the first game for the Pacers. Fury has been a constant like, oh, this is new. This is good. This is what they should be hoping to see from him out there. And so that is like top of line best thing. Let’s talk about a few other guys that matter a great deal. Actually, let me make sure I didn’t miss anything on my uh furry notebook here. Okay. No, I do not. Oh, his third quarter was a little quiet, like invisible. Like the third quarter, I was like, did he play? He did. Um, outside of that, he was pretty loud. So, I need to look back and see kind of how he faded away in that frame because the Pacers, that was their highest scoring quarter. They found other ways to get going. Like Ray J Dennis wasn’t scoring as well there, but he was getting into the paint to set up other guys. Kim Jones made some shots in that frame, but Robert Baker was making shots in that frame after a slow start. So, the only that is the only thing that I can say he’s got to figure something else out there, the invisibility part. But outside of that, I think a lot to like as the Pacers from the Johnny Fury experience so far in Vegas. Let’s pivot to some of the other guys, the rookies, the returnees, the two-ways, the Oh, no. No. Quinton Jackson and a small, very small Isaiah Jackson update because I got to talk to him because he was at the game today after signing just a few days ago. Thanks for making it your first listen today and every single day or second listen. Okay, Carter Bryant was the best offensive player I can recall in one summer league game. Maybe not. Their first game, the new Timberwolves French center, whose name I can’t pronounce, was also awesome, but locked on Spurs because I watched Cooper Flag versus Dylan Harper and I walked away being like, “Oh, Carter Bryant is awesome.” Their other lottery pick. That makes me a dork. I’m aware. Okay, other Pacers players to get to. Let’s go. Um, not fun first. Quinton Jackson out. Didn’t play. That’s no fun. He was very fun in the first game. I hope we get to see him again. Uh, playing in summerly just to see if like he can do that again. And it’s like, okay, this is clear. He’s clearly way too good for this. Shut him down. Get him ready for the season. Uh, not as good. First game. Awesome. Look at that new scoring. The setup stuff is there. Ray J Dennis, look at this. That floater, the three. Great. This is exactly the new skill I wanted to see from him personally because I know he’s a good passer. I know he’s a very good read the game guy. I know he knows the play. Like there was twice in the first game right in front of us where he knew the play and he was telling his teammates like pointing like you were there. You were there, set that screen, right? like he is really good at that kind of stuff, but the scoring needs to be more, you know, all the time with him, especially given his size. Uh, not a good game from him. Drove into a lot of crowds. You know, I know Rick Carl does not like that. He talks about it when other players do it. Five turnovers for him to just four assists. He had some nice defensive moments certainly like he’s still reading the game well on that end of the floor. He missed all four of his threes and he went one for five on twos. Not a fun bounce back for him after a very, very impressive first game, right? He was quite good in that Cavs win. He might have been their best player. You know, him and Q were certainly the best, too. Uh, but he lost a lot of that verve and pop in this game, right? Good defense early, but the quiet scoring start with my very first note. And then it just never ever recovered, right? He wasn’t effective as getting those shots. You know, I think he had one of those floaters that he likes to get blocked. He had some chaotic drives. Uh, the if the floater is not there and the drives are in people, he just didn’t look very comfortable, right? And so, he ends up getting to four assists, which is tied for the team lead. It’s way too low, right? Fury matched him. They needed more from him as a table setter and paint attacker to like get the defense moving, especially with Quinton Jackson out. Not enough there from Ray Jay Dennis in this game. I did get a couple posts that were like, “Well, why is this guy on a two-way?” I was like, “Did you watch the first game?” Like, obviously, this one was not good, but the first one was equally good in the opposite direction. Like, it’s it’s it’s fine. Let’s get some more sample before we rust to judgments. Obviously, if he keeps playing bad, that’s concerning. Uh Cam Jones has had a very interesting two games in that I haven’t yet been like, “Oh, this is so awesome.” Like I see this one thing he’s doing. I’m very impressed. I will say this, he was very fiery in this game, which I really love. Like it’s the first time I I’ve seen some yapping at Summer League, which was pretty fun. Him and Brooks Barnheiser were getting into it at one point. Like Pascal Seakum, Rick and and Andrew Nimhard were all clapping and smiling, you know, on the bench at them. It It was pretty fun to see, you know, that kind of passion from him. I think that’s a good thing to see. He was four for five on twos, right? The same thing as Fury where they were very efficient when they could get to the rim and take shots they like. For a left-handed dominant guy like Jones, you know, for him that’s often like coming from the right side so he can use his left hand across the paint or coming from the left to kind of scoop at the basket. His three was not there. This hitch thing looks goofy, but I’ve seen it like the first day I was at le practice, he could not miss. He was on fire, right? So I I think he can be a better jump shooter than he’s been so far. So, the quiet start wasn’t there, but then he had an awesome drive for a bucket being lefty early. He had a nice right-handed move in the in the third quarter. No, there was a second quarter, but then his pass immediately was a little off target, right? So, something I liked that he did, he kept the defender on his hip like beaming up full court for like 60 feet. He kept this guy behind him and then he had this nice pass to Enrique Freeman for some points. That was a nice like field play and like using his speed and and size combo. That was the first time I’ve seen him do both of those in one play like for a meaningful amount of time. That was great. But then he was a little quiet for a while. Uh the chippiness I think woke him up. So I I I’ve kind of been like eh on his summer league so far. There’s certainly room for him to do more. But you also can see like okay here’s what he wants to do or is trying to do and they’re still mon to be clear they’re still monitoring his minutes from this hamstring injury right? So he’s not quite I would say 100% out there. So keep keep that in mind in the analysis of Cam Jones. I don’t want to pile on somebody who’s hurt in summer league and also at summer league. But, you know, it’s kind of been like, okay, I see when he when he gets a chance to wiggle and like drive, he can get by his man or like keep his man on his side at least. So, there’s some sort of vision or advantage that he can use to get someone else open or find a shot he kind of likes, but the efficiency hasn’t quite been there on the jumpers. It hasn’t been all the time with the passing, right? That was something that was talked about a lot is like, oh, he grew as this point guardy type player that last year uh at at Marquette. He only had one assist in this game to three turnovers, right? I just think a little more creation would be nice from him, but I also understand that that’s not easy in his role. He’s playing next to Ray J Dennis in the first game. He’s playing next to Quinton Jackson. Steven Ashworth’s bringing the ball up the floor sometimes, like Johnny Fury’s initiating sometimes. Like it’s not all the time that he has a chance to actually do these things, but we know he can be an offball player, too, because he was for three years at Marquette. So, just a little bit more of the Cam Jones experience, I think, would go quite a long way for the Pacers. Uh let’s squeak in Isaiah Jackson here and then we’ll do the two guys fighting potentially for a two-way spot in the last segment. Isaiah Jackson was at this game. I wonder I slash assume he was in Vegas for the first game but unsigned. He’s not just going to go sit courtside. Uh Andrew Nehard there too. He was at the Mavs game right before to see his brother play. And Pascal showed up. All right. Look at that. So some Pacers have descended upon the lovely Las Vegas. Um that was fun to see. But Isaiah Jackson, I talked to him. He said he’s 80 to 90% of the way recovered from his Achilles tear last year and does expect uh to be ready for training camp. And then I asked Rick Carl later about Jackson and James Wisman if they’d be ready for camp. He said, “I don’t know for sure, but it certainly seems like they’re going to be in good shape.” So there’s your injury update. I’ll have a story on talking to Jackson about his resigning. And I talked to Rick for about 5 minutes. Uh that story will be coming out pretty soon, too. a lot of stuff from him on the offseason in general, his thoughts on where the team is at, where he’s at, where things are headed, all all sorts of stuff. Um, like that. So, yay, summer league fun stuff. Uh, the game before was the Bucks and Miles Turner was courtside and then he left and ran into some Pacers people. Seemed very cordial with him, high-fiving people in the back. But, uh, certainly the day after his press conference was was interesting. Uh, okay. Let’s talk some Tenon Peter. Let’s talk some Enrique Freeman to close out today’s lockdown on Pacers. Back here on Locked on Pacers, thanks for making us your first listen today and every single day for your second lesson. Locked on Thunder. Ryland Styles will talk about the other side of this. And the Thunder now 53 up in this fictional series uh against the Pacers. I don’t know. I I I was thinking of all these like, oh, most important Pacers Thunder game. They forced a game nine jokes and now I can’t use them. So, you get the bad end of the jokes. unfortunately. Okay, Tayen Peter, man, this kid is so interesting. Like, he’s just kind of good. He’s got really good feel. He is. So, here’s the thing. He’s listed 6’4 by Liberty. And I’ve stood near him and watched him play. I don’t actually think he’s 6’4. I think he’s probably like 6’3, you know, ish. But he plays bigger than 6’4. He plays like he’s 6’6, like he’s stocky enough to keep guys in front of him. He moves his feet well enough to not get destroyed on these drives. His team defense certainly needs a lot of work. Again, he got smoked by some screens in the first game, but he’s playing really well with his field. Three assists and only one turnover in this game. He had real passes, like legitimately good drive and kick passes. He took the threes today, right? That was my biggest criticism of him in the first game was that he would have open threes. And Richie McCay, the Liberty coach, talked about it on this podcast. I should have been more prepared for it. Like he was trying so hard to fit in, which is good, like keep the ball moving. And he got off it quick. It wasn’t like wrong, but he’d be open and get off of it. In this game, he took the three. I thought that was great. took seven of them in this one and Isaac Jacob even said to the game like that’s something they were telling him so I feel better about having noted that about him and he took seven threes he made three of them like the shot looks comfy that’s great he almost rolled in a fourth in the corner that like miracally bounced out so I you know the percentage is quite close there but he also made all of his twos three for three on his two so he went six for 10 on his way to 15 points just really really good stuff from Tenon Peter on both ends of the floor um he’s just been really really great recently uh in in in a lot of ways and I’ve been impressed by what he’s been able to do as he’s kind of trying to show that, you know, he being picked 54th, he is NBA quality, right? He can do a lot of things and the whole point of him was this efficiency monster, right? I talked all about it. I I’ve talked to people who coached him about it, right? And that’s great. Making shots is awesome. Being athletic at that height is awesome. But what I talked about with him previewing summer league was like, what else, right? What else is he going to be able to show beyond this that’s like, okay, they can develop that into a player? they can take this and turn him into a 2-way player. Like I don’t I don’t I wouldn’t call his defense on balance like so great. But he’s held up enough that I’m like, “Oh, okay. That’s good. That’s telling.” Like maybe he can be a good enough deterrent on the ball. And the passing has been fine. The decision-m has been fine. And enough enough has hap happened beyond just making and missing shots that I’m like, “Okay, this is good. This is interesting. This is clearly someone who I think if they gave it 22, I’d be like, “Yep, I get it. Uh worth taking a stab at developing this player because Talon Peter has been pretty good. uh through these two games by individual notes on him. He had a really beautiful out-of- bounds save in the first quarter. Super athletic play to throw it off. A Thunder player doing real stuff in his start. He was doing a lot of that stuff in the flow. I should have mentioned that too. Like it wasn’t like he had to force anything and that’s really impressive there. Uh he rejected a screen on one of his driving kicks for a three and that’s like a very advanced decision to make for somebody who’s getting ball handling reps in Summer League for the first time. Like a lot of guys want to take the screen, try to attack the crack defense and set something up there. No. Reject. go make a nice pass. That was like a Oh, okay. And then in transition, he tried a lob. I believe it was I can’t remember. I I was going to say I want I think it was to Robert Baker, but now I can’t remember. It might have been to Freeman. One hand. Love the idea. Creativity shows some passing pop. Love it. Uh it was too high. It went out of bounds. So, um bad bad throw. I like the try. I like the creativity at summer league. Explore your studio space. See what you can do. Uh, Enrique Freeman, who in theory is competing for a 2-way with Peter for the last one with Dennis and Quinton Jackson signed currently to two, although I would still say, and I’ll explain this maybe when summer league is over as the Pacers kind of figure out the rest of their offseason. There’s so much in flux with Tony Bradley not guaranteed and like I think Quinton Jackson’s played well enough to get a standard spot that like maybe there could be two-way openings. Who knows that don’t don’t like don’t verbatim recite that I’m saying that those two guys are fighting for a two-way spot. They’re just the two guys who I think are the most in the mix for currently one open two-way spot. I thought Freeman was better in this game. Like in the first game, his numbers were good and I was like, “Yeah, but he like made some goofy plays and had some weird reads and missed some shots that he, you know, needed to make. I thought he was more effective in this game. Two blocks and a steal was nice.” Uh, four for five, okay, but 15 points. He made two threes. That’s something he needs to show if he’s going to be, you know, a front court player at his size. He needs to be able to spread out and take and make the jumpers. He was actually an okay like willing shooter in the G- League last year. The accuracy wasn’t awesome, but like in a game where the Pacers went eight for 42 from three, him being able to stick his really stood out. Of course, he he got to the foul line six times, he’s been great at getting to the line in these summer league games, like that’s where he’s been really good is when he rolls and he gets open, he’s caught the passes and just gone straight up and drawn some fouls that way. And then obviously dominant glass game, right? This is where his effort translates the most to a direct like, oh, this is great skill. He led every player on both teams with 11 rebounds. So 15 and 11. They did not play well in his minutes. But like the the way I would describe this is he did what he’s supposed to do. But he was way more graceful than game one where in game one it was a lot of like that was too clunky. Like the numbers were great. Clearly he was impactful even though I kind of felt weird watching it. This time I felt really good watching it even though the numbers weren’t quite as good because it was it made more sense. It was more connected with his teammates. It was it was more graceful. I think his defense like everybody’s needs to be a little bit better. But I walked away from this and being like, “Okay, that’s someone who’s made progress from last year, at least on a confidence of finishing level, on a timing of attack level, on a role, right? Someone who’s developing center skills, but is really playing the four, right? I guess Philip Wheeler could be described as playing to four.” Philip Wheeler, by the way, 10 free throw attempts. He had nine points on one true shot attempt. Like, he’s been actually kind of good in these games. Enrique Freeman, though, this was better. I think that he would like to keep doing this, right? Coordinated plays. He actually had some meh defensive plays early, but not awesome. Uh, and then his impact kind of faded a little bit, but then it came back in the fourth quarter. He was playing late with with some of the deeper bench guys. So, this was a better game from him. Uh, perhaps the Pacers best player in this game. Maybe Fury, but he missed a lot of threes. Honestly, maybe Robert Baker after he started poorly. Maybe it was Taylor Peter, but I put Freeman right in that conversation. So, not a great team level performance. Uh, a lot of individual like kind of stuff from the Pacers in this game. They need to be better in their next one which is on Tuesday. I believe they play Chicago. I might be wrong about that. I’ve uh I’m wrong about many things. I can’t quite remember their exact order. I think it’s their only game against not a playoff opponent that they had uh from last season. So, it might be Monday. I can’t even I don’t even know what day that is. Yes, they play the Bulls on Monday. Podcast coming right here right after that. Um I will not be there. This was my last one that I will be at. So, we’ll see who’s still playing in that one. Tomorrow, we’ll do a little bit more of an offseasony like, hey, here’s what’s still coming. Be prepared for this or that kind of thing that you need to keep an eye on with the Pacers roster at the moment. Very full. And then more summer league stuff. And finally, as the offseason is deeper and I’m not going to be so paranoid about something big happening late in the night, we can do guests more often. Yahoo. Looking forward to that as summer league and this week progresses. But WNBA allar coming up. I’m going to be busy. Anyway, thank you guys so much for listening today. So much appreciated. Again, I could not do these travel trips without everybody listening and interacting and enjoying the things sometimes that I have to say. Back tomorrow talking more Pacers heading into the week. Thank you all so much for listening. You can find me on Twitter and Blue Sky, Tony AR. This podcast is on Twitter and Instagram at lockdown pacers. We will see you very soon.
