Koby Brea’s Summer League Debut Was INSANE!

Koby Brea’s Summer League Debut Was INSANE!

So, the Suns win their first game in summer league action in blowout fashion. Both the Suns and Wizards scored 23 points in the first quarter, but Phoenix really ran away with the game from that point on. Washington never really stood a chance in this one, and that was in great part due to Kobe Brea. The Phoenix Suns second round pick out of Kentucky was redhot from three-point land, as truly was expected. But that’s why it was so surreal to watch. We all knew going into Vegas that he’s been the best shooter in college for the last couple of years, but it just hits different when you see it at that next level of competition. Obviously, he has another step up in difficulty awaiting him when the regular season begins, but for now, the moment is obviously not too big for him. It’s so weird and scary to me that the Suns haven’t fully guaranteed his contract going into this year yet. Hit the like button for me, please. and let me know in the comments if you think the Suns should make him a part of their permanent roster this season. Now, other than a few passing mistakes that led to turnovers in transition, Kobe Fuego Brea basically played a perfect game in his summer league debut. And he’s not even the player that I expected to break out in game one, but I mean, hey, I certainly will take it. Common Malawatch played well. He protected the rim and scored a cool 14 points to go with five rebounds. Ryan Dunn and Oso even had flashes of straight up brilliance. Ryan Dunn hit a turnaround fadeaway that screams to me that he was paying attention to Kevin Durant in practice. And OSO threw down a dunk that a day later I still don’t know if he’s landed. He got up so high. Unfortunately, Rashir Fleming was injured and didn’t play. But even if he did, it’s hard to imagine him outshining Brea in this game. Considering the added pressure of it being his first NBA game, the three-point line being deeper in the NBA than it is in college, and the fact that everyone knows to guard him closely because they think that all he can do is shoot. I would have completely understood if he missed a couple of shots to start and then found his rhythm and knocked a couple of down. But no, said, “F that. I’m different. I don’t need a warm up. I’ll warm the damn net up myself and from deep. He started three for three from the three-point line. And these shots were beautiful to watch. I’m not just hyping that up. Take a look. In my mind, he is now confirmed to be a legit future sniper in the NBA, not just college. I don’t know what’s more impressive, his footwork, his overall shooting form as far as his release, or the arc that he has on his shots, but the best part of his performance is probably his buckets that didn’t come from shooting threes. He scored over two or three defenders after getting a handoff from Malwatch by way of a higharching soft finger roll. He hit a pull-up jumper driving to his left and then stepping back for a fadeaway midi that absolutely gave off Devin Booker vibes. And he showed his ability as a back door cutter with a nice dunk to round out his performance. Going forward, I think I could make an argument that he shouldn’t even play another minute in the summer league because he’s proven to be too valuable to risk. But the other side of me just wants to watch him play so bad that I don’t care about the slight risk. Knock on wood. One thing is for certain, though. Like I said, he’s only on a two-way contract. That needs to be rectified. Honestly, it feels like an oversight in the first place and a mistake that they should not have made. As currently constructed, I could see Brea actually cracking the rotation this season. And as far as upside, I see him being a potential sixth man of the year candidate someday. And if he continues to round his game out, I could see him as a future starter in this league as well. Honestly, with shooting skills like his, sky might actually be the limit for Kobe Brea. We’ll see you guys Sunday for the next Suns summer league game. It’s going to be an afternoon game, so be ready for that. Thanks for hanging out. I’ll see you guys then.

  1. He looked good, but it’s one summer leave game. Malauch though. Not good. Stiff and slow. If that’s all he’s got…….dude is a bust.

  2. Even if they keep him on a two-way, he's still a Restricted Free Agent after it expires. No need to worry about him on a two-way

  3. Yessir that’s how are team should be and always be from now on, let’s goo Suns!!!!!!!!!!🐦‍🔥☀️🏀

  4. Koby game reminds me so much of steph curry his confidence with his shot and how he can throw it up soon as he gets the ball his percentage from 3 is higher the steph but he hasn't played in nba game yet so im hoping he turns into a next star

  5. Gabe. Forget 6th man. This guy could be another booker easily and with more size. This kid isn't just 3 and deep. This kid is learning Booker s mid range. And if he keeps going with the mid range he's taller than SGA. We're gonna be dangerous this season. We've got the youth and Haliburton still isn't as good as Booker.
