Ronnie Burrell Postgame Media | Portland Trail Blazers 86, Memphis Grizzlies 96 | July 12, 2025
Uh well, Ronnie, first off, uh just your thoughts on the game tonight, particularly in compared to how you guys performed last night. Yeah, different type of game. You know, it’s a different type of team, different style of play. So, uh more physical game, a hectic game. Um it’s something to be expected in any summer games. It’s highly competitive though. So, I think we got a lot out of it. That’s what I’m happy with. I’m happy how we responded at times with the physicality of the game because that’s part of our style of play as well. Um, only thing I’m really disappointed in is kind of our effort on the glass and um, I think that’s what uh, caused us to loss, but great experience for the guys. They went on that run. I think they went 10-0 there in the fourth quarter. Was that rebounding as you just mentioned or were you seeing something else there? Yeah, well, rebounding was one of the things throughout the game. We have to credit Memphis for their relentlessness on the glass. Um, it was it was other things as well. You know, sometimes shots aren’t falling. Some guys didn’t have the games that they had the games before, but it’s a learning experience. So, we’re okay with it. We have a back to back as well. So, we’re mindful of that that the guys may be a bit fatigued. We fought through it and I’m proud of him. Will you talk about what Caleb uh Love brought to the game or and what you kind of expect from him or want from him? Cale Caleb has been excellent. He did an excellent job handling the ball today. His primary ball handler. He’s in great shape and he he thrives in these type of physical games, you know. So, he brings a control to the game and kind of he’s he’s a pretty mature player at his position for a young age, you know. So, um, he I’m impressed that he didn’t seem f physically, uh, phased, you understand what I’m saying? He he responded really well. Um, and I think as we did as a group over time, so Caleb, he’s an embodiment of how we want to play. What did you seen from him in these couple of games? City had a really good night tonight. You know, I want him to be even more aggressive if he can be. When a team is pressuring him, handling the ball, he has the ability to get to the rim and he showed that at times tonight. So, City is great, man. He um he’s worked all summer, worked on his body, worked on his game, and I think it’s showing, and he’s going to have um high expectations for the rest of summer league as well. I’m going to expect him to continue to play better and better. This is the first backto back game for Hansen in NBA. So, how do you feel about his game after the, you know, this game? That’s that’s one of the things that the NBA is different from every other league around the world is we play back to back. So, it’s something he has to get used to. And I think it’s a great thing for him to come in in his first experience. He’s played two games in two days, you know, and he responded well. It seemed like he was in good shape and um again, very impressive night for him and another learning experience for him. So, I’m very happy with what what he’s had to experience this couple days. How do you help him to control the turnovers like today? It’s it’s a learning process. So, there’s going to be different referees, going to be different types of defenses, you know, different types of players guarding him. So, he’ll learn he’ll learn a lot of little tricks and how to take care of the ball because that’s he’s going to have the ball in his hands, you know. So, I will watch it, but I don’t overreact to him turning the ball over sometime cuz it’s going to happen with a guy who’s passes the way he does. Sometimes there’s going to be turnovers as well. Coach, you just talk about the learning experiences. So, based on what you have seen from the last two games, what are something you think uh Young need to put more efforts on in order to prepare the next one? In order to prepare, well, listen, we have two days. We have u some time to prepare for the next game and we’ll watch film with him and talk to him and he’ll watch himself. As of right now, I think I can see that he’s very hard on himself and he wants to be good immediately and he is. I told him just relax. He did a good job and uh he’s already thinking about what he can improve on and I know that the turnovers do bother him. Um but the team was very physical. They fouled a lot. He had to play through a lot of hands and contact and it’s something that he’s getting used to and I’m proud of what he did. I’m proud of what he did. I don’t want him to at all think that he wasn’t prepared cuz he played a really good game. with John’s passing ability, do you expect um him to kind of the ball to go through him and him kind of to uh run some of the offense? Well, for for summer league purposes, for sure. We’re going to throw him the ball in situations and let him make plays and and the passes that people like to see, and that’s that’s his special gift, you know, so I’m going to put him in those positions again, you know, whether he turns it over or not. And he’ll just get better and better at it. He had a couple dunks, couple moves in the post. What did you think about his his play in the paint tonight? Yeah, I I urged him to dunk the basketball today. You know, I think it’s something that not that he’s missing, but sometime he likes to finish with touch around the rim and sometimes he needs a little bit more of an aggressive finish, you know. So, that was good to see. You know, he’s again, I give him credit for being fearless and stepping into this environment, you know, without uh without hesitation. He’s responded excellent. Thank you, Ronnie. Thank you.
