The Spurs Drafted A Cheat Code…

The Spurs Drafted A Cheat Code…

This man right here with the ball is Cooper Flag. The number one overall pick and one of the most talented prospects ever. Someone who can make defenders look silly on a consistent basis. On this occasion, however, he’s not up against any regular defender. In front of him is a defensive demon. Boy, look at the pressure being applied by Carter Bryant on paper flag. That handle better be tight tonight. He about to take his cornbread and just did. When I say he is a defensive demon, I promise you I am not exaggerating. Because if that play against Cooper Flag wasn’t impressive enough, how about this play against Cooper Flag where Flag gets past Carter initially in transition and then out of absolutely nowhere. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Carter Bryant at full extension swatting that shot. Or this play, which is one of the best defensive plays I’ve seen in a long time. He’s initially faceguarding Justin Edwards to prevent him getting the ball. He then jumps the pass nearly forcing a turnover. Presses all the way into the back court. And then when it looks like he’s finally out of the play, look at him recover and swat the shot. Or how about on this play where he comes from behind to block Boner. Boner then recovers it. And who is there again to greet him at the rim? None other than Carter Bryant. We are only a few games into NBA summer league, but if there is one takeaway for the San Antonio Spurs, not only is Dylan Harper legit, but they might have just got WBY, he’s Scottie Pippen. Okay, just to be clear, that is an exaggeration, but at 6’8, Carter Bryant has the length and the strength to guard the likes of Cooper Flag, but he also has the lateral quickness and the willingness to guard players 8 in shorter than him, like Ryan Nemhard. and he said so himself. Um I think just my willingness to just defend anybody. I don’t care if you’re 7 foot 280. I don’t care if you’re 6′ 120 lb. So I think for me I just try to do whatever I can to win a basketball game. Whatever the coach needs me to do. Oh and then he can do a combination of both on the same play. Like here where he’s initially guarding at the point of attack. His man gets a bit of a step on him which forces the big to help over and watch Bryant then break up the lob. I’m sorry. How many players have you seen go from guarding 35 ft from the basket to breaking up a lob on the same play? I’m going to say this again. Carter Bryant is not normal on the defensive end of the floor. And the Spurs just paired him with the least normal defender of all time. Yeah, the league’s in trouble. And just to show further evidence of his anticipation and his awareness on defense, how about off the inbound pass where Carter is kind of hovering around initially, but the second that ball gets thrown up, he is alert, using that wingspan to tap the ball out of the offensive player’s reach, securing the steel before finding his big running the floor for the and one. But the most impressive part about Carter’s defensive game isn’t just the wingspan or the athleticism which he has and which you have seen on all of these plays. Blocking sevenfooters, disrupting smaller guards. That is impressive. What’s even more impressive is his motor, the intensity he is playing with in summer league. Most NBA players don’t give this level of effort on defense in a playoff environment. He is genuinely playing summer league. the first few games of summer league, by the way, like it is the NBA finals. There is even a clip of him on the bench with the Spurs up 30 points and him still yelling out instructions and motivating his teammates to get those stops because clearly 30 points up isn’t enough in summer league for Carter Bryant to switch off. And Flag just said this after the game. Yeah, I mean Carter’s, you know, he’s an incredible player. You know, he’s really lengthy. He plays really good defense. I mean, he looked tired at all the whole game. He was picking me up on 94. You know, I was definitely feeling a little bit jazzed, but I mean, he was just there, you know, playing great defense, you know, the whole way. Do you know how tiring it is to defend 94 ft consistently to use every ounce of your physicality, every play? There is a reason Cooper Flag said he was gassed because Carter Bryant made him gassed. And yet somehow Carter Bryant himself is able to do this consistently every possession of every single game. And like I’ve said, this is just summer league, but these are the kind of defensive demons the Spurs are surrounding Wemby with. Dylan Harper was also bringing that energy defensively, and it is contagious as well. When you see one guy guarding 94 ft and running over every single screen, you almost feel like you have to as well. Why do you think the OKC Thunder have been such a great defensive team? And the Spurs will also have Stfan Castle, Jeremy Sohan. Dear Fox is a guy that when he is locked in with his physical gifts, he can be a very good defensive player. Last year, the Spurs were the eighth ranked defense with WBY on the floor. WBY is now going to be even better. I don’t know how scary he’s going to be after he became a Shaolin monk this off season. Stefan Castle is only going to get better on both ends. Their whole team is going to get better. That is clear because of their age. But now you have added to that mix one of the best defenders in this draft class. And now you have to worry about switching from Stfan Castle to Carter Bryant to Jeremy Sohan, maybe even Dearan Fox. And if by some miracle you get past those guys, you have one of the greatest shot blockers in NBA history waiting at the rim to send you back. Oh, and you’re going to have to do this every possession of every game for the next 15 years. Good luck. Now, that’s just the defense. Cooper Flag also mentioned his offense at the end of that video. He’s a great player offensively. I think he has a lot of a lot more to show and he’ll get used to that. He’ll hit shots and he’ll do what he has to do. He’s a great player. So, I know Carter’s going to keep doing that. This is the wild card of Carter Bryant’s game. I think we can all agree he is going to be a good NBA defender at worst and he has the potential to be one of the best in the league. But what’s his offense going to look like? Well, as of now, it is raw. Let’s not lie. And I’ve seen some people say he’s terrible offensively and he won’t be playable because he shot poorly the last couple of games. That’s to put it lightly. Shooting 8% from the field his last two games of summer league. Not great, I know, but to me, summer league is not about the numbers. It’s about the moments. I didn’t mention how many blocks he’s averaging a game or how many rebounds because what’s more important is the way he’s getting those numbers. It is about the flashes, the glimpses of brilliance, and the consistent energy on defense. Anyone can have a couple of bad shooting games. Jared McCain shot 25% from the field last summer league and was the most efficient rookie scorer in the league. We just saw Cooper Flag go 6 for 21 and then go for 31 points the next game. What you should be asking yourself is, does a player look like they don’t belong on the court or are they simply just going through a slump? I think it’s the second one with Carter Bryant. Now, in saying that, he’s not a polished offensive player by any means, and at best, he will be a spot-up three-point shooter and a decent cutter his first year or two in the league, but the key is if he can knock down those threes, which he did last year in college, shooting 37% from three over an entire season instead of a twoame sample size. And then there’s his cutting ability as well at his size, with his length, all of that athleticism you see with him skying through the air to block shots. Well, he can do that as a cutter. He can catch lobs. He can move in transition. He can use that strength, that length, that verticality to finish around the rim. And all he has to do is just be serviceable, just to make a couple of shots, get a few offensive rebounds, a few cuts offensively. If he can do that, he is going to make up for it and more on the defensive end of the floor. And going forward, there are flashes to his game offensively, just like here where he gets the pass and then moving to his left, the beautiful jumper whilst fading. We saw a little bit of this at Arizona with the pull-up shooting, the mid-range shooting, flashes is the key word. Don’t expect him to be some elite offensive player, but I can guarantee you one thing, he is going to be elite on the defensive end of the floor starting game one of next NBA season. and the Spurs have drafted a special defensive player. Is that Scottie Pippen?

  1. lol Vince Carter and Kobe Bryant had a secret little nephew Carter Bryant😂 what is this nba 2k generated name -_-

  2. Well guys I think I’m going to make it official, I’m submitting my fan resignation from the Lakers and taking my talents to San Antonio! There’s no shame.

  3. Dallas fan checking in to say Bryant was very impressive, like ridiculous defense. I was sleeping on the Spurs, but I see the backcourt should be stacked and the wings are good defenders. So, good for the Spurs and look forward to seeing teams struggle going thru the TX triangle once again.

  4. This is exactly how Kawhi was in the beginning, so the sky's the limit when you have the spur's developement team

  5. You can tell on that clip where flagg is dragging him into a screen that the screener was DONE after that initial contact lmao

  6. Harper, Castle, Bryant, Sochan and Wemby as a starting lineup will wreak havoc for years. We thought the Spurs defense was good? Looks like it's about get challenged by these dudes in a few years

  7. Bryant got a winner’s mentality with the conditioning to help make it happen. He don’t care about being the star. He’s like a draymond green. imagine in 5 years when he is used to the nba and look what spurs did with kawhi he went from a regular role playing defense player to one of the best scorers and defenders in the league
