DaRon Holmes & Nuggets Honest After Summer League Game 1 vs Bucks

wanting to win, but how nice was it to get that first game out under your belt playing again? Um, it felt great. You know, like I I like you said, it sucked that we lost like that. And, you know, I’m kind of hard on myself. You know, um, I felt like I could have did better, but you know, I got to look at the blessings. I didn’t get injured this game, so you know, that’s a positive. You know, and our team, we played well. We show in the second half, so I thought we did great. Did you find your rhythm as the game went on? Um, just getting the jitters out kind of like last year. Like, at first I’m like, man, this is crazy. So much is going on. It’s NBA, you know? But then you get used to it and then um you just get a little comfortable with the flow and figure out what you need to do. Now I get to watch film and uh where I need to correct myself and um go back and do those things. Did you know Coach Mson talked about he really wanted you to be aggressive? That was the key for you. How do you feel you did in that department and did it evolve as the game went on? Yeah, I definitely think I did a pretty good job with that. Uh but making sure I also did it within the system. I try to do what I’ll do and like, you know, when I’m playing um with the guys uh on the roster like during the year, I want to play the right way, you know, and coach Mudson preaches that. So, you know, finding good shots for me and also creating uh good shots for my teammates and playing hard defense. If I can do those things, I think that um we’ll we’ll do pretty well. How did the speed of the game feel out there? Man, it was crazy at first. It’s so hectic, you know? That’s why like, you know, I always see people are like, “Hey, like this guy didn’t play well. This guy didn’t like it’s the first summer league.” Like not even just for me, for all the other athletes out here playing like a lot of the rooks, they’re getting used to it. So it just takes some time. It’s like when you first play when you’re a freshman going into college, you know, that’s how it feels. Coming back from an Achilles at a time where like a lot of guys around the league, as you saw in the playoffs now, just what what as someone who’s now gone through, what have you kind of made of the wave of Achilles injuries and the talk around it right now given the way the playoffs went? Really, you just got to take things one day at a time. It sucks. You know, it could happen to anybody, but you know, like coach Chad told me, Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, you got to take things step by step. You know, go out there with confidence, play hard, you know, and don’t worry about it too much. You know, if you think about it, then something could happen. But if you’re not thinking about it, then you’re good. Coach Mson was very complimentary of the second half defense. What changed for you guys on that end? We just talked more. You know, we talked about what we need to fix at halftime. We came back out and um we executed, you know, and I think if we do that, we can win any game. Uh congrats to them though. They hit a very big buzzer beater, but I thought we had that one. So, what were you saying going into the last huddle there after you missed the shot and you did put it back? Yeah. Well, I was just confused on the situation. I thought that we had like.5 seconds left on the shot clock. So, that’s why you’ll probably never see me shoot something like that again. Um, that’s the only time I did that cuz I thought like, oh, we have like.5 seconds, but apparently we had like 5 seconds left. So, I’m so glad he got that put back cuz it would have looked horrible. Thanks, dude. You guys Hunter, you guys came back in that second half, ultimately didn’t get the win. What would you like to see cleaned up here moving forward? Um, I think we just got a little sped up sometimes, which is, you know, to be expected, first game of summer league. Um, so I think, yeah, overall we we just got to be a little bit better, but we will be. How did your experience help you in this game? I kind of just knew what to expect. Um, you know, I wasn’t going out there just guessing. I kind of just knew what was going to happen. Mson had talked about rebounding being a big point of emphasis for you. for the double double. How did you be active on the boards? I mean, I think it was just a focus point. Just, you know, wanted to make sure they didn’t get second possessions. So, um, you know, when it was coming off, I just tried to go get it. Defense got you guys kind of back into the game in the second half. What kind of shifted there really after that break? I think just energy. Um, I think it for the first time we were speeding them up instead of vice versa. And I think, um, you know, that’s when we were able to make our run. How nice was it to see Don back out there playing? It was awesome, man. I’m I’m so happy for him. It’s been a long journey to get back here. So, I’m just thrilled that he was able to get back out there and play well. Some of the shots didn’t go in the way he would have liked, but uh still, you know, you feel good having him out there because he’s he’s a professional basketball player that’s always going to do the right things, get us organized. Um and rebounding is a big challenge for him coming in from the coaching staff. So, to see him with a double double was was huge. Do you live with that shot on the last possession? Uh Monday. Yeah, I’d have to uh rewatch the tape probably to to see how contested it was. Uh I felt like it was pretty good defense. We got a good contest. Uh so you live with it. Not happy living with it, but you live with it. Mark has played with a lot of energy. Has a pretty good motor. What did you see there? Oh, exactly that. I mean, uh again, for a summer league game, it’s uh it’s not always easy to find a rhythm making shots, but uh the energy he brought onto the defensive end and just in the huddles, he’s always talking. He’s the loudest guy on the team um in all the right ways. So um really good energy from him tonight. Excited to see him four more game four more games. How do you build on this? Uh just uh offensively, especially I think in the first half our turnovers um maybe a little out of control. We could be a little more organized. Had to stretch in that second quarter. It got away from us a little bit. Um so that’ll be a point of emphasis tomorrow when we watch film. Uh but then again just emphasizing the positives from the second half because I thought our defense that’s what’s going to help us win games. Thank you.

  1. I was so impressed with Holmes. At first he seemed a bit timid, which I expected, but wow! all the little things he did, and the aggression he showed was amazing. From the ball handling as a big, the shooting, the ability to get to the rim, the screens, the passing, the effort and hustle! super excited for the year

  2. Hunter Tyson isn't even worth a two-way, let alone a full time roster spot. He can't shoot, he can't dribble, he can't pass, and he can't defend a single player in the entire NBA.

  3. Some people have tried to comp Holmes to Zeke Nnaji, but that comparison is not valid. Aside from the fact that Zeke played only one year in college & could/should have waited ate last one more year to come out, their games are not the same. Zeke has never been a very good defensive player or a shot blocker. Holmes is both of those things. Nnaji's game is mostly on the inside. Holme's can shoot the 3 or handle the ball on the perimeter. He was considered one of the most NBA ready college players in the 2024 draft.
