Atlanta Hawks’ Summer League HC Bryan Bailey After Win Over Miami
by saying like it was just good resilience for our team. Uh just fight in the fourth quarter. I think the big thing to be hoped is just like playing defense and in the fourth quarter that’s kind of what we did and got stops and turned into a transition basket. So um just great great group of guys to work with, you know, just preach and work together, play hard and play defense. I know it’s summer league, but for Kobe to be able to get out there and play and play as well as he did, just what did you see from him that kind of stuck out to you? No, we kind of organized our group in that fourth quarter. you know, when we went on that run, he kept pushing the ball and then when he got fouled, he made his free throws, so he kept us together. He was leader out there. And then as far as his defense, you talked a lot about those blocks. He had two blocks today. Just what does it say about his energy and his resilience to to play on? Yeah. And and his selflessness, not even all that. He took a charge in the fourth quarter, which is a big play for us. You know, obviously takes two points off the board for them and it allows us to go on the other end and score. So, he was great. You mentioned defense. and we saw Ellie, especially in that fourth quarter, like stopping at the rim and all that. Just how have you seen him kind of growing and and getting adjusted to the team? No, Ellie Ellie’s been great. Obviously, he can he’s very versatile defender. He can guard one through five. And I think in the fourth quarter when we changed our defense and started switching everything, he was a big part of that. Jacob Toppen had a productive game, double double. I know you just I mean, you decided couple days ago another two-way with you guys. What have you seen from him this week already? And what do you expect from him? Just his leadership, you know, with our group. um high IQ guy, always working hard. He’s one of the first guys in the gym and he just puts the work in um out there. He just he fits in our team, you know, we can put him in different spots. He can play three, four, um he can space the floor. So, he’s great. And on Nicole, you know, day after he signs up, his first NBA deal as well, eight fouls, but other than other I mean, I I don’t really worry about the fouls. You know, I think the big thing for me throughout this whole thing, this whole process is preaching to the guys, be physical. Um, but to pick up, you know, after that, we can tone back a little bit. So, he was physical throughout the game and he was defending. I was going to ask about the offensive rebounds, but you guys dominated off the glass mostly. Is that is that intentional gameplay wise to just be crashing? Yeah, I mean, that’s part of what we want to do. You know, we want to crash and get, you know, second chance opportunity. So, any chance we can go, we can do that, we did that. talk about Kobe South second again and he found Ellie in the corner for that big injury as well that kind of gave you guys a lead. So what’s his role been as a point guard especially being able to not only organize but like have the court vision to find guys? Yeah, I think he’s finding that balance between being organized and the score and you saw it in that last possession where he got in the paint, you know, the defense collapsed and he made the right read. So he’s been working on that and he’s he’s really good at it. And then Asa’s debut today, just what did you see from him? I know it’s just the first time for him to get out there and kind of get some minutes, but how do you think that fared in his first kind of NBA? Really good. Ace is a, you know, high character guy, works hard, high IQ guy, always asking questions and trying to get better. So, anytime, you know, makes a mistake in practice or something happens, he comes to the coaches and he’s able to correct those mistakes right away. So, he was great defensively. I like that he rebounded and that’s kind of what we want from high energy. Is there an area with Asa that you’re like targeting coach this week in particular or like even this summer? Is there any area that he’s working on to try to get better? I mean, the biggest thing is for him to learn our system. You know, obviously coming as a rookie, kind of learn what we want to do, but I definitely want to see, you know, to see him defend rebound. I know not a lot of third year guys will play summer league. Sorry to keep talking about, but I know not a lot of thirdy year guys will play summer league, but for him to kind of not necessarily think of him being on a particular level, what does that say about Kobe as a leader? Kobe’s a competitor, you know, so he wants to go out there and compete, and any chance he can go out there and compete, that’s what he does. So, he works hard. He’s in the gym every single night and he’s a competitor. And just you personally coming as an assistant coach to head coach of the summer league team, just what do you want to see from yourself as far as growth and what you want to learn from it? Yeah, just just learning. You get head coaching reps. Obviously, you get to be out on the floor and practical teams up practice plans, your own atto. So, for me, it’s just to continue to learn and grow under Quint Coach Quinter. So, um it’s been great just to learn. out. And you
