Daryl Morey Hints At MAJOR MOVES Coming For The 76ers + WORRISOME Joel Embiid Update | 76ers Rumors
Could [Music] some big moves be coming for the 76ers this season? Daryl my spoke at Summer League and revealed that some players on this roster might not be safe and he might be looking for a big upgrade as the season goes along. We’re going to dive into all that. Plus, my also spoke a little bit about Joel Embiid, Garan Yabaselle, and Quinton Grimes as well, and the current state of this roster and kind of the job he thinks he has done thus far in the offseason. So, we’re going to get into everything he said, including a concerning report on Joel Embiid’s recovery. Before we do all of that, guys, we are on the march to 24,000 subscribers. My goal is to hit that number before the end of July. We are 664 people away. So, if you’re looking for a channel here on YouTube to get all your Sixers news every single day, all year long. I promise it’s the best place to stay updated with the 76ers, hit that sub button. I really appreciate it and I promise you, you will not regret it. So, let’s start with what Daryl my had to say regarding some moves possibly happening and it all connects back to this theme that we’ve talked about here on the show with the East kind of being wide open this season. Here’s what my had to say. I do think it’s open in the East. I do think that’s a fair characterization. I think obviously that we weren’t the only team that’s unfortunately gone through a lot of tough injuries. That’s opened some things up. But we’re going to have to prove that we’re with those upper echelon teams in the East. But we do feel like if all things come together, we can be right there. And this is the key part. We’ve given ourselves a lot of flexibility to upgrade the team during the year if things are going as well as we hope. He said it right there. I think it’s pretty obvious what my is alluding to that yes, the East is open as we’ve talked about with injuries to Jason Tatum, Damen Lillard, Tyrese Hallebertton all being out for the season. The Bucks, Pacers, and Celtics don’t look to be as strong as they once were. So, the Sixers have a path if they’re fully healthy to content. So my here is saying, look, if we’re sitting there around the trade deadline and we’re in a good position, we’re going to be aggressive. And he says that he set this team up in a way to make those big upgrades come deadline time. So look, expect more in the Sixers team to be making some moves as we get closer to the deadline if they are in a position where they feel adding some talent and upgrading this team can help them get over that edge. But is there AmoreI telling the truth or is he just kind of talking out of his ass? Has he actually done enough to and put this team in a position where they can upgrade and had the flexibility to upgrade at the deadline? Because I’m going to be honest, I don’t know how much flexibility they actually have given when you look at the salaries on this roster. You have the big salaries of Paula George and beating Tyrese Maxi, then VG Edgecom, you’re not trading him year one. I think the two guys you really look at on this roster that you say, “Yeah, these guys could be moved. Kelly Ubé, Andre Drummond, it’s about $13 million right there.” Can you really get a significant upgrade at that number? We’ll take a look at some guys in a second that you maybe could look to target after that. I don’t think you’re trading Jared McCain. Unless you’re getting a massive, massive upgrade. Tren Watford, Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon. Oh, lower salaries. I don’t know why you’d move off Tren Trenton Watford in one year. I don’t know what team would want to trade for Eric Gordon or Kyle Lowry. So again, it really comes down to me for Kelly Ubé, Andre Drummond. Is there a market for those two? And if there even is a market for those two players, I think Ubé, some teams would be interested. Andre Drummond, possibly. Can you combine them to find an impact player right around that 13 14 15 million mark? Because got to match salaries in the NBA, right? So, if that’s really the only salaries you have, are there any players around that number or come trade deadline time could be looking to be on the move and you could actually find an upgrade and get a trade that you think helps this team out. Now, I took a look at some player salaries that I think could be trade targets come deadline time. It’s so hard to know right now sitting here on Monday, July 14th, what players and what teams are going to be in certain situations. They could be on the move come February, but PJ Washington on an expiring contract at 14 million. I think that would be an upgrade over Kelly Ubé. And though that’s the way I’m kind of looking at this as you package UB and Drummond to get an upgrade in that starting lineup at the four spot over Kelly Ubé. Obie Topphen could be an interesting one. I have Aaron Nesmith here as well. He’s more of a three than a four. But the Pacers, who knows what they end up looking like this year. Could they end up selling one of these two guys? Cory Kaspert’s here as well. He he fit the money. I’d probably rather have honestly Kelly Ubé than Cory Kisser and I know Cory Kisper can really shoot the ball, but outside of that doesn’t provide a whole lot. I think Kelly Ubé is a is a more winning player even if UB has his struggles offensively. So look, there’s really not a whole lot of options honestly as outside of these guys even going up to 156 17 million I was looking not a whole lot of attractive options if you’re looking to make a big move. move. Now, the Sixers, when we’re talking about Demory set this team up, well, they do have some solid draft capital if they do want to make a splash and you have to add some draft picks to Ubé and Drummond. Of course, they have their own first in 2028. As long as the Clippers first in 2028, they don’t have any tradable picks as of right now in 2026 or 2027, but that Clippers pick is very valuable. They have a swap with the Clippers in 2029. So, the Sixers have the rights to swap picks if the Clippers pick is higher than the Sixers. And then first in 2030, 2031, 2032. So, they have some assets. I like their draft picks. I think they have some valuable picks as well. From a player standpoint, though, I’m not sure they really have the most flexibility and the most intriguing assets to make an impactful change at the deadline. But on the margins, I’m sure you can always find a way to make some moves. I will say this too, when it comes to making these moves and having the flexibility to make these moves, I think one of the reasons Mory said this is because of the aprons, right? Once you pass that second apron, it’s very hard for teams to make trades. You cannot combine player salaries and moves like we’re talking about here with Drummond and UB. That’s why it’s so key the Sixers stay under the second apron. And that’s kind of why the situation with Quinton Grimes is so important. We take a look here at how much space Sixers currently have. Now, as of right now, Grimes is not signed. So, the Sixers are still technically under the first apron, $9.8 million under, and they’re 21.7 under the second apron. So, they’re going to be over the first apron. Grimes is obviously getting more in this 9.8 unless he takes that qualifying offer. But the Sixers really want to be under this second apron number and I think that factored in a little bit to why Gershon Yabaselle wasn’t on this roster. We’ll get to some Gershon talk later. So really got to get Grimes for under this number and so you have some space under this number as well so you don’t end up going over that at some point during this season. It’s why these Grimes negotiations are going to be so important and I think that’s partly why they’re taking quite a while as well. Now, there’s a lot of restricted free agents, Josh Giddy, Jonathan Kaminga, Cam Thomas that have yet to sign their deals. The restricted free agent market is just taking a while, right? There’s not a lot of teams that want to give them money. There’s no need for a team with the Sixers to pay up for Grimes right now. So, it’s going to take a little bit, but it’s so so key that they stay under that second apron so they don’t get hit with all these trade restrictions this season and they maintain that flexibility that my trying to build. So really all in all I expect Philadelphia especially with more what what Moria is saying here and the actions we have seen in the past to be very very aggressive if they are good at the deadline. If it’s another scenario like last year where injuries are piling up and they’re not good once again. Sure they could try to sell some guys but I expect them to be better this year and if they are expect some changes to happen. I would say Kelly Ubé Andre Drummond are the names to watch as guys that could be moved as we get closer to the deadline. Doesn’t seem like anything’s going to happen right now, but come January, February, we could see some pretty big changes to this 76ers roster. So, I mentioned a couple names there in UB and in Andre Drummond that I could see getting dealt at the deadline. Do you agree? Do you disagree? I want to know who do you think is the most likely Sixer to get traded this season? Again, can be UB, can be Drummond, anybody else on the squad. You think a Paul George trade might happen? I don’t see that happening, but maybe you do. Get down in the comments section right now and let me know. Now, we’re going to get to a pretty worrisome in my opinion Joel Embiid injury update from the Athletic as well as Daryl my speaking on the Gershyabellle Quinton Graham situation and the position he’s put this team in right now. But before we do, we have a massive new deal through our friends. And it only applies today, Monday, July 14th. You can get 25% off on a Jared McCain jersey. Again, only available today, Monday, July 14th. So take advantage before it’s too late. chatsports.com/mccain sale. All right, so let’s get to the back half of today’s show. this Joel Embiid update, man. It It kind of scares me a little bit and it’s going off of what my had to say about a week or so ago that Embiid was on track to be ready by the start of the season, but Tony Jones of the Athletic added a little more insider information. Here’s what Tony Jones had to say. Mory says Joel Embiid is on track to be healthy for the start of training camp, the start of preseason, and the start of the regular season. But league sources tell the athletic that Embiid still has not returned to full oncourt basketball activities. He has resumed partial basketball activities according to this league source. In light of this morning in the front office remain optimistic that Embiid will be on the floor for the season opener. How many times have we heard that exact line right there that Mory and the Sixers are optimistic that Joel Embiid will be ready? So, sorry if I’m a little bit skeptical that Daryl my Sixers front office is saying that Embiid is expected to be ready because that’s all we keep hearing, right? He’s expected to be ready by this point. We think he’ll be good to go. We are hoping and we’re optimistic that Embiid will be ready by this certain date. Are we ever going to hear he will be ready by this certain date? I don’t think so. And so, I get it’s only July, right? and we have months until the start of the regular season and until the start of training camp and all that, but it just worries me, man. He hasn’t gotten back to full-on court activities. Now, he’s only what, three months out from that surgery, 12, 13 weeks, some something around there. But, and I get it’s Joel Embiid and and you want to take things slowly. It’s just we hear this all the time, right? Is that he’s expected to be ready and then there’s a setback and he’s not ready for the start of the season. So, sorry if I if I’m a little bit worried. I’m not trying to be super negative. I’m just trying to give y’all my honest thoughts. And with the fact that he still hasn’t resumed full oncourt basketball activities and all the words we’re hearing are optimistic and hopeful and expected, it’s just uh it just scares me a little bit in all honesty. Let’s get to what Daryl my here had to say on Quinton Grimes and Gresian Yabelli. Of course, Gresian Yabelli leaving in a free agency to go to the New York Knicks. and a lot of fans upset that the the Sixers did not match that contract the Knicks gave him. And Gershon himself came out and had some things to say that Philadelphia didn’t even give him a real offer led to some confusion. Look, you can be mad at Daryl my for a lot of things. This situation is not one of them. And what Daryl my had to say here, I actually it’s true and I’m believing what he’s saying because it’s the situation Philadelphia is in. Here’s what Mory had to say on losing Gish Yabellle. Yeah, that sucked. We offered Gershon the most we could that wouldn’t limit us in our ability to retain Quinton Grimes. That was above the minimum. I’ve seen reports saying that we only offered the minimum and that was not true, but it was definitely below what he ended up getting from the Knicks. We knew it would create a challenge for us. We wanted to retain Quinton Grimes. We hoped to work that out with his representation. Our focus was on making sure that happened. So that did impact what we could offer Gershon. I just want people to understand and realize here Daryl my didn’t try to disrespect Gershell by giving him a low offer. They weren’t just letting him go for no reason, right? They could not give Grimes the mid-level exception. I’m sorry. They could not give Gershon the mid-level exception because then they wouldn’t have been able to keep Grimes. It’s just the unfortunate reality of the Sixers situation and it’s just the way the CBA is nowadays. So, look, I’m glad Gershon got his money and I’m sure he is a little bit upset that he couldn’t come back to Philly and that they didn’t give him the offer he might have wanted, but it’s the financial position the Sixers were in. And some people will say, well, why didn’t they trade him at the deadline then if they knew they weren’t going to be able to keep him? They didn’t know that Quinton Grimes was going to end up demanding 15 to 18 plus million dollars per year in free agency. They had no idea he was going to end up playing that well the second half of the year. And I think they are correct in prioritizing keeping Quinton Grimes over Gershavell. As much as I love Gershon, I think Grimes with his skill set a more dynamic player and can impact winning at a higher level. That being said, I love Gershon. I wish they could have made it work, but the way the NBA works with the financial rules, it was really just impossible. Finally, Daryl my just talking about the state of the roster currently as it stands. I think we’re optimistic. Again, there is that word optimistic with where things are at with Joel and we are looking forward to next season. I think we went in I think we went in with the big goal of being more athletic among the group that we think will likely be on the floor. That’s key right there. I think we have done that as well. So, uh just a couple quick thoughts here on what Daryl had to say about getting more athletic with the group that they expect to be on the floor. I’m gonna be honest, outside of adding VJ Edgecom this off seasonason, did you get that much more athletic? Obviously VJ’s a tremendous athlete and you needed that in there. But Trenan Watford’s a good athlete, but not a great athlete, right? You add Dominic Barlo, he’s a really good athlete, but he’s on a two-way deal. You add Jabari Walker, also on a two-way deal, right? And that’s really the only external guys you brought in. You know, Janiah Broom, he’s not much of an athlete, right? And then talk about the guys you bring back in Kyle Lowry and in Eric Gordon like they’re not athletes either. So I don’t really know you got that much more athletic Daryl Mor to be honest. Maybe a little bit than you were last season but outside of VJ I might be overselling it a little bit. Do love the pick obviously of VJ. The other thing that I thought Mory said in that little quote that’s pretty notable. We went in with the goal of being more athletic among the group we think will likely be on the floor. That tells me I don’t think they really have plans for Lowry or Eric Gordon to be in the rotation much. Lowry doesn’t surprise me, right? With his age. He’s basically a coach at this point. He wanted to play one more year. They gave him that one more year. But look, the Eric Gordon thing, you’re basically saying you’re not going to really have him in the rotation. At least that’s the plan as at this point. So what what was the point of bringing him back, man? You could have used that minimum contract on another player. I get saving some money by keeping him around because his cap hit is lower than what his actual salary is. So maybe you just wanted to save on the margins on on the margins there for the salary cap purposes. But uh outside of that, if you wanted to get more athletic, I think you could have moved on from a couple of these guys and done what you actually set out to do instead of just adding VJ. really the only move I see that’s a huge addition impact addition in terms of getting more athletic on the roster. Uh but of course we will we will see how this roster does end up performing come regular season. Speaking of that to round out today’s show when this roster is fully healthy, everyone’s playing, everyone’s out there on the floor, where do you think the Sixers rank in terms of best rosters in the NBA? Do they have a top five roster, a top 10? Are you lower on this roster? Let me know. The Sixers had the blank best roster in the NBA when fully healthy. Appreciate you all for tuning in to today’s show and we’ll catch you next time right here on 76ers Now. [Music]

Daryl Morey and Nick Nurse are Frauds and don’t know how to build a team.
I like Corey Kispert
Camara, toppin or eason would be nice targets.
Sign and trade of grimes could shake the roster up. Be nice if they could get a young player in return for the youth movement
looking at that roster was not good.
Please 🙏 trade Embiid and PG
Embiid had too many chances, let him get a medical discharge from the NBA.
With the uncertainty of Embiid's health ,
Keeping high potential draft picks is a no brainer !" You don't even consider trading those picks !" When the future of your team depends on replacing players with short playing futures , you don't look at acquiring players who will only marginally improve your squad and giving up valuable assets !"
Now the 76er org is trying to turn Edgecombe in to a non- playing pussy- like they did to every player on their roster- including Maxey- who sat out a lot of last year. Edgecombe is getting pissed now. This is why Ace Bailey said "FUCK YOU" to the loser org 76ers TRUTH is being told here. As for Embiid?? He will be "ramping up" the rest of his fckin life. LOSER. Get rid of this poison. George too.
LeBron James for Paul George!
I’m optimistic, but people forget that the Sixers, along with the Pacers and Celtics are WHY the east is “wide open.” We’re not taking advantage of the “openness” we caused.
On a side note, the East isn’t as open as people think, the mid and top teams just got reshuffled.
But they still have not been able to sign Q Grimes.
Never seen a GM talk or have as many news conferences as much as Morey does. He needs to stay silent and just do the job he was hired for
The key item said by Morey was if all things come together. I personally don't see that happening. The team is basically the same .
We need a defensive system like the warriors right now players like Mobley Franz Paolo Jalen Johnson KAT KP will take advantage of our lack of interior defence(Embiid can barely jump anymore and bona and Drummond are too much of a liability on offence to play a lot of minutes) we do have enough perimeter defenders to make it hard for d Mitch Brunson bane Trae young garland in the playoffs with pg vj grimes Edward’s oubre all being capable perimeter defenders
Sign and trade Grimes for Kuminga
need a friggin point guard
