What Will Dudley, Barea, & Tim Hardaway Jr. Bring to Jokic & Nuggets?

What Will Dudley, Barea, & Tim Hardaway Jr. Bring to Jokic & Nuggets?

What is up everybody? Adam Mades here and I’m joined by two buddies, Bobby Carella, Mark Stein, both from DLLS. And you guys have a lot I want to ask you about because we have some of your guys, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jared Dudley, and now JJ Berea. I’m going to start with Tim Hardaway Jr. I’m excited about this one. I think that he might get see the biggest bump of all the guys coming over relative to where he was because I think he fits Jokic’s style. Am I just being too optimistic here? I guess it depends. You know, we we talked about this the other day and you said, “Well, the contract the contract is different.” And that is such a a determining factor, I think, because whenever Tim was in Dallas, he was making 17 18 million a year, you know, sometimes a little more than that, depending on what year it was in his deal. And when you’re paid that highly, your minutes are going to be high. Your role is going to be large. And on some of those teams, you know, the Mavs had some defenders obviously around Luca, some wings, you know, was Luca and KP for a little while there before Kyrie got there. Um, and in in those years, the Luca KP years, they needed someone else on that team to be dynamic in some way. You know, Dorian Finny Smith, Reggie Bullock, some of these guys, you know, before Jaylen Brunson emerged, could defend and could shoot, but no one could really do anything with the ball. And so Tim was kind of the the grease on the wheels. you know, he would take a kickout pass from Luca and could do something that could punish double teams. But as the Mavs continued building their team and Nico Harrison took over, JK took over as coach, you know, they brought in guys like PJ Washington, uh, you know, guys that were Kyrie obviously that could do a lot more with the ball. And so that wasn’t really needed from Tim. They just needed him to shoot. But I think he still wanted to be that kind of player, you know, that real aggressive guy with the ball in his hands. Uh, and and that drove Mavs fans a little insane, I think. So he steps outside when you ask him to be a little bit too aggressive. That’s where things could go off the rails. And yet I saw an interview with him the other day on the old man in the three podcast. Very excited to get to play with Jokic and talked kind of hinted at because I don’t have to just stand in the corner. I get to kind of dribble the ball around and make plays. It’s really just going to be the buyin. If he buys into the role, I mean, he’s going to be a steal at that price. He’s still a really productive player. I think the Pistons were really happy to have him. When that whole trade went down last offseason, I think, you know, obviously he’s got the college tiein to Michigan, but I mean there was question like how would a veteran like Tim Hardaway fit into a a Detroit team coming off what were they 14 win season, but he was really good there. They liked him there. If he buys into the role, he can still be very well and that contract could be a steal. I think we know the Nuggets need shooting, but you know, as as Bobby said, there were times in Dallas where he wanted more of a role and it didn’t come his way and things got a little messy. He was being yanked around a lot though to be fair. You know, Rick and J both would start him and then sit him and then play him 35 and then play him 15 and just this this sort of like yo-yoing back and forth. And I’m sure, you know, not only is it mentally frustrating, but also physically like staying in rhythm and keeping a rhythm, and he is such a rhythm guy. You know, he’ll go 18% from three for two months, and then he’ll be like a 52% shooter for like 3 weeks. You’re just like, “Oh my god, you know, this guy’s unbelievable.” Yeah. Well, the other thing that the Nuggets did was they hired a couple of assistant coaches, Jared Dudley and JJ Berea. They’re going to be lead assistants for Denver. So, Jared, let’s start with Jared Dudley, who’s the number one assistant to rookie head coach David Adelman. What can you tell me about him, Mark? What is he bringing to the table? He’s going to be a future head coach in this league and this is this is a huge step for him. Memphis wanted Jared Dudley. Cleveland wanted Jared Dudley and Denver like Memphis was offering the number one chair next to Adelman. And you know, Jared Dudley, you know, not only is he high energy, not only does he have great rapport with players, having been a player himself in this league for a long, long time, he’s not afraid to tell it like it is to guys. And I think that’s something that really was notable and contributed to his success in Dallas. you know, he was still at the, you know, the end of his career, he was in that Udonis Hasslam role for the Lakers. That’s how he got to know LeBron James and Anthony Davis and Jason Kidd, who was an assistant under Frank Vogle. And he was still at that point thinking about playing at least one more season. And Jason Kidd and the Mavericks said, “We, you know, start your coaching career. Just trust us. Come here.” And Jared Dudley dove into coaching. and he was he is a massive part he was a massive part of the Maverick’s coaching staff for the last four years. But this is for me this is just the natural evolution for him. I mean he’s a great he he is a very entertaining interview. He loves to do interviews. So if you guys if you get him on the show um you know I don’t know if the Nuggets you know some teams have have a policy where assistant coaches aren’t allowed to talk. If the Nuggets are one of those teams where the assistant coaches are allowed to talk, you’re going to have him on at some point. And you know, he it will be one of the liveliest interviews you guys do. He he he was very popular with the media as a player, as a as a assistant coach. He was always doing the TV interviews like he he’s he’s a very gregarious guy. Um, but like I said, he will he doesn’t, you know, he he doesn’t know Jokic, but my my suspicion is he will win his respect pretty quickly, but also be able to even say what needs to be said to Jokic. And not everybody can do that, right? And that’s I think one of his special skills. Does he is he like an offensive specialist, defensive specialist, or you know, technically or or tactitionally? I make it a word. Tactically, there it is. tactically tactic. I think you know I know he was Sean Sweeney was the Maverick’s number one assistant throughout Jason Kidd’s tenure. Defense was Sean Sweeney specialty and I know that Jared Dudley did study a lot under Sweeney as part of his I got to learn this coaching thing. I got to dive in head first. Sweeny’s one of those guys who spends 25 hours a day in the gym. I’m going to be like him. I’m going to learn defense from him. So, I think he I think he is naturally probably more defense than offense, but I think a big part of what he brings to the table is the way he will talk with the guys on that team. And he’s been a starter, the 15th man. He’s never been the he’s never been the franchise guy, but you see the way, you know, LeBron James and Anthony Davis absolutely love him. I mean, that’s where it’s a real loss for the Mavericks. Anthony Davis. This is going to be his first full season in Dallas. And the assistant coach who was closest to him is now in Denver. The Mavericks are bringing in Mike Penorthy who was with Lakers in LA. Yeah. Because because of his I mean he is super close with AD. So Mike Penorthy like you said also has a Nuggets background. He’s going to step in now to that role where he’s the AD guy. But um Jared Dudley will be missed in Dallas and Denver got a good one. So, you’re a little bit younger than me, Bobby, but you know, the 2011 championship is all about Dirk, Jay Kid, Jason Terry, but the fan favorite was JJ Berea. Oh, yeah. And so, I have to imagine number one, he’s thought of very fondly by Massav fans, but what can you tell me about him as a coach? Yeah, I mean, he is he was a hero on the 2011 team, inserted in the starting lineup in the finals, and there’s a very famous video and photo of LeBron trying to back him down to no avail. He locked him down in the post. JJ is forever an icon for that. But um you know later on in his career he had a lot of injuries and ended up becoming like basically their fifth guard but was still on the team again kind of in the in the Udonis Hlam role and he was almost he almost became a player coach really a conduit from Rick Carile who was then the head coach to Luca and to KP uh where he was in some cases literally translating the message from Rick to those guys into Spanish but then also just like saying this is what the coach is saying you might be hearing it this this is what he actually means, you know, the translator. I like it. Yeah. And also, he was able to listen to those guys and willing to listen to those guys, too, as a sounding board and uh, you know, for vent sessions, whatever. But then also being able to communicate to them at a high level and he sees the game through a point guard’s eyes, which, you know, I feel like Joic isn’t really a point guard, but he definitely sees the game differently than most bigs. Jamal Murray, too. I mean, your your two most important players are guys that see the game differently than your average player. And so JJ I think can help there. As a coach, you know, he’s got a couple years head coaching experience in Puerto Rico. Um I’m crestfallen that he has not been on the Mavs staff at any point. Um but I I wish nothing but the best for him. Um but yeah, I mean much like much like Duds, he’s willing to tell a guy, man, you suck tonight like what’s going on, you know, but he will earn their respect and earn their trust. Uh and is just a world-class communicator and a world-class vibes guy. Anything you want to add to that, Mark? And then also, you know, rookie head coach and now two guys who have not been in this chair. Is that odd at all to you? I mean, that would be the surprise. And, you know, I think if you ask any of us who are around this team, I everybody loves JJ Berea. It is impossible to like him and he will become a fan favorite there too as even as a coach to the extent that an assistant coach can, he will be. But yes, I mean J now JJ Beret, he has been a head coach on multiple occasions in his native Puerto Rico, but this is his first real NBA coaching job. He did have kind of an introductory to coaching stint with the Mavs, but like this is going to be his first time on a bench and he’s moving right into the number two seat. So Dudley number one, JJ Berea number two. The Nuggets still technically have the number three seat open, but you’re not going to get a former head coach to sit in the number three seat. surprises me a little that with Dave. Okay, David Adelman had a great playoff run, but I mean David Iman’s coached three regular season games. He’s coached what? 14 playoff seven playoff games and that’s it. And so you would think, and look, he is he is the son of a head coach. He is a basketball lifer. His his dad’s a Hall of Famer. He has been around NBA coaching his whole life. But even saying all that, like you just saw Jason Kid just had three openings on the front of his bench, which is very rare. Two of those spots are filled by fellow former head coaches in Frank Vogle and Jay Triano. So I am surprised that no one on the Denver bench is a former head coach. That really does kind of surprise me. And they had someone there. Ryan Saunders was was on was on the last staff as a former head coach. So, it is, you know, I think I think they would benefit from a wise old head to join that staff, but I it’s not going to happen. I don’t think a rookie president of basketball operations, rookie GM, rookie head coach, rookie first chair, rookie second chair. So, the last year of his deal. What could go wrong? Yeah, what could go wrong? Well, on the flip side, and I’m not going to put you on the spot here, Mark, because I don’t want you to get aggregated, but you know, I hear Dudley and Berea are both very close with Luca Donuch. Nicol very close with Luka Donuch. Is there any part of you that when you hear those guys being signed, you go, “Oh, that’s interesting.” No, I really I told you you didn’t even have to answer. And And I really don’t because I I Yeah, the Lakers The Lakers are not going to let Luca Donic out of their midst. They’re not mist. They’re not They’re not going to let they’re not going to squander this opportunity. They They The Mavericks won the lottery in May. The Lakers won the lottery in February. They’re they’re they’re not going to let 77 slip away. Look at look at the history of the Lakers. This is I mean So you think that had 0% to do I mean I’m never going to No. No. In the NBA after February after that nothing is zero. I’m never going to Nothing is zero. The JJ1 lose weight one of these days. Nothing is zero. The JJ1 surprised me a lot, Mark. Like duds make sense. He’s interviewed for head coaching jobs. But like JJ is it registered on my if that happens if his dream scenario happens are are you leaving us for DMV? That’s going to be tough, dude. Those games would be a lot of fun to watch. It’d be a lot of fun to watch together. You know what? We got to see Bobby and Denver here very soon. You’re clearly you’re not at zero. You’re clearly at like 82%. I I mean, look, I just I said it was interesting. I’m not going to go beyond that. It’s it’s objectively interesting, but it stops there. It’s very curious. 1. I gotta start watching the other vowelless basketball channels more. Who else we got? The Bulls, Suns, Mavs and 6ers? Yall should add another market with a GOOD team to complement DNVR😂😂

  2. There’s no excuses this year! Everyone blamed Malone and Porter! There not here, it’s time for Murray to be a professional and take his job seriously!
