What are the expectations for Phoenix Suns Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro in year two?
The Suns lost to the Hawks yesterday. Uh they’re already load managing. Came to summer league. Uh but then they beat the Wizards on on Friday. Uh who just broad question, Wolf, because I have I have a name in mind. Anybody in particular stand out to you in these first couple games? Ryan Dunn. Okay. Yeah. Okay. When he played. When he played. Yeah. In that first game. Yes. Ryan Dunn. Uh why Ryan Dunn. Ryan Dunn. Um you know what I was hoping for? Basin earnings and I wrote it in my notes as a matter of fact. What would be the best thing that could that could happen for the Suns in the summer league and for me it was Ryan Dunn and Oso going out there and looking like they were year two players like they’re kind of ahead of everybody else. Like they’re ahead of everybody else. Yeah. And guess what happened and that’s what it looked like. That’s exactly what it looked like. That is that is good news, brothers. That is good news. Especially when you’re talking about Ryan Dunn, because Ryan Dunn could be that guy as well. He could be the culture g uh culture guy, the culture club guy, if you will, that the Suns are looking for that they’re trying to replicate. Isn’t that right, Rashir Fleming? All right, that’s not my player. Um, Brian Dunn. I think he’s bigger to the upcoming season obviously than the player I’m going to throw out there. But, uh, Kobe Brea, Kobe Brea, not bad, man. Not bad. And I I keep going back to when we had Kevin Pelton on and he talked about, you know, hey, this guy can shoot. This guy can shoot. Yeah. And I went back and read his or reread, I guess, his uh his draft grades and because of what he specifically said about Kobe Brea in in the Suns, just their grade for their overall draft. It was kind of a throwin at the end. Says, quote, “Though Brea is another shooting guard on a team overloaded with them, Phoenix could use his shooting. He has the highest skill projection as a shooter of any player in my database, particularly if Grayson Allen is traded. But it’s that middle part of all the players in the draft. He has him with the highest skill projection as a shooter. Wow. In the draft. Yeah. And it’s easy to write that pick off, and I’m not trying to like overstate it now because he looked good in two summer league games, but the the reason it was easy to write that pick off was because of what Kevin Pelton just said. They’ve got 9,000 shooting guards, but they may not all be here when the season starts. And if he’s a shooter, could always use that. Yeah. No, I I like what I saw from Kobe Brea as well, watching the games. Um, come on, Malawatch. Now, Malawatch did not play in the second game either against the Hawks, but watching him in that first game, I thought was really, really encouraging. Now, was it perfect? No. No, it wasn’t. Does Does he show deficiencies? Yes, he does. Does he have to get a lot more physical as far as I’m concerned? Without a doubt. But having said that, I thought, man, I thought 14 points and five boards and a guy that had a couple of blocks as well. He looked really active down low. I love his feet. Yeah. Kamal Malawatch grabbed my attention. You can’t miss him when he’s playing. Yeah. uh you you you just it’s you can’t miss him. And is he raw? Yeah, he is. I mean, you said this multiple times. He’s 18 years old. He you know, it’s not like he’s been playing basketball his whole life. That’s a difficult position, the one that he plays. But man, you can you can see the talent just like the natural god-given ability. You can see that he has it. And so that’s going to be it’s going to be exciting to watch that develop. Um you mentioned Oso Wolf and Oso went out there and and put up some stats yesterday. with 18 points, nine rebounds, uh a few assists, few steals, couple blocks. This is putting the ball on the floor. OSO OSO just kind of like taking over. Um okay, here’s the cut. Okay, this is list. Okay, they talking to him about, you know, the upcoming season. You know, what are you what are you looking to do this season? I think just being a leader out there, I feel I’m more comfortable, confident, um I can really step into that leadership role, especially with the summer league team, and hopefully carry that over to the main team. But that’s that’s something that I’m naturally good at. Spend a lot of time leading at Marquette and I feel like when city teams are player led, they can go a lot further than when it’s just coaches. So hopefully I can be uh in step with the with the coaching staff and and help help them. Oh, that is so cool, man. Grow strong, grasshopper. There’s no doubt about it. But never forget, you got to do before you can say as well. Being a leader is about going out and doing and being successful. And that’s one of the reasons why if he’s if he earns more minutes and he is a guy that is suddenly going to be in the rotation and he’s going to earn starter. Hey, who knows how good Oso Eige Gadaro can become. But you you have to do before you can say. True. Because if you get in there and you start leading, hey guys, listen, we got to do A, B, and C. Dude, you’re playing seven minutes. Sit down and be quiet. Don’t tell us our our job while you’re sitting there watching. Yeah, exactly. Absolutely get that. Uh, but the specifically the part where he said, “I think teams do better when they’re player led than leaning on the coaches for leadership.” That sounded like you fed him a line. Yeah. To go out there and say to the media, Yes. It is so true. You Is that different than the mentality that was here last year? Uh, yeah. And and we can debate where that mentality was coming from last year. If it was a coach telling a player not to lead Yeah. vocally during the game or wherever it came from. I’m the leader of this team. Yes, I’m I as the coach, I’m going to lead us to one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history. And don’t you question me, coach? You’re not doing moisten a jock if you want to lead or or leading. He’s not doing or leading. Either way, that right there and and you’re 100% right. Saying something in the middle of July is it’s a good start, but it means nothing if you can’t execute it during the season. But what he’s saying right there is the exact opposite of what we saw from this team last year. And I think most Suns fans are looking for a lot of exact opposites from what we saw last year. I think you’re right about that. And that also speaks that also speaks to the culture the Phoenix Suns want to establish here at Binonians. This is this is why it’s really really important. He just didn’t pull that out of the air about getting better as a leader. It’s something I’ve always been I’ve been really good at it leading that that is that is a great characteristic to have. But until you’re out there actually playing a lot, you really can’t lead. And also, I’m not saying he can’t earn that, right? Especially on this team, he could. Especially on this team, it’s wide open, man. Here we go. Who’s going to get minutes? We’re going to find out. But I love the fact that the culture of the Phoenix Suns is about leadership and players leading. He just didn’t pull that out of the air, did he? book. Uh here’s Ryan Dunn talking about he and Oso just pushing each other all off season. It’s been it’s been this whole offseason, not even just here. Um you know, in the weight room on the court, conditioning, you know, we were in China um and we were doing like sprints on the treadmill and like it was supposed to be like a light jog and we got to like 20 miles an hour which is just everyone going 20 seconds hard, you know, moving it up. So it was cool competing with him and then you know just him on the court and then him being here just being a leader you know talking to each other. He was ultra aggressive on the court today offensive yesterday offensively and defensively and just him you know you know pushing me to be a better be a better player helps me a lot here. Oh man. So we was talking about Ryan Dunn. That is Ryan Dunn talking about Ryan Dunn talking about Oso. Okay. Just wanted to get that clear. That’s awesome man. Iron sharpens iron. And maybe this is going to be a situation where Ryan Donoso are gonna be those two irons sharpening each other coming from the same draft class. You know who they sound like? Who? They sound like the twins. Sounds like the new version of the twins. Now I I don’t want to I don’t want to over look, they have not accomplished anything in the NBA compared to what Muel Bridges and Cam Johnson have. I’m not saying that. But that relationship between two younger players on the Phoenix Suns who are just like they just they have that like brotherly rivalry and I mean like if we have if we get to the Super Bowl and Ryan Dunn and Oso Eigodaro make a bet where one of them has to open a lemonade stand in in Uptown Phoenix I don’t think anybody’s going to be upset if these two guys have that sort of relationship. Uh and that’s that sort of personality is what this team it kind of felt like was lacking the last couple years. So, needs it. We’ll see it. Let’s go. Thanks for watching Wolf and Luke. Dunn should be fighting for a starting spot. Oso gonna be a bigger piece of the bench than last year.
