Did Tre Johnson show ENOUGH already? Washington Wizards could SHUT DOWN Him and Others
On today’s episode, a lot of people are asking for Trey Johnson to be shut down for the remainder of the Wizards Summer League. Have he and others done enough to make this happen? All right, a lot to get to, a lot to unpack here in this edition of Lockdown Wizards a day removed from the Wizards summer league win over the Brooklyn Nets. Trey Johnson, should the Wizards shut him down going forward the rest of the summer, have we seen enough? The emergence of Keshan George continues here throughout the summer league. He has dominated in more ways than just scoring. We’ll touch on that in the second segment. And then some news from earlier today. Rashawn Holmes will no longer be with the Wizards organization. They requested waiverss to make him a free agent. So the Wizards go back to getting a little bit thinner at the center position, losing a key depth piece at that position. We will hit that in segment number three. All right, Abdullah. So, the scuttlebutt from most of the reporting that we got throughout the process before the summer league was that the year 2 guys would probably play in only two games in the summer league. Uh Trey Johnson and Will Riley, obviously those two are rookies, so we didn’t really get any kind of inkling on whether or not those guys uh would have any kind of limitation to how much they play in the summerly. I guess it would depend on what they saw from those guys in the first couple games. This is probably an unpopular opinion. I kind of want everyone including Bub Carrington, Alex Sar, Keshan George. I’d honestly like them to play one more game because I think we saw flashes from a lot of these guys and um certainly things that you know you can check off a box and say uh this improved, this got better or this is what we expected from this player like Alex Sar defending the rim and route to a record setting performance with eight blocks. Uh, but Bub Carrington, you know, if he wants to become this team’s true point guard going forward, I kind of would like to see more opportunities uh, with him with the basketball in his hands because I don’t think we saw a ton from him. He only shot five free throws over the first two games. I think something that that was what we hit on, we wanted to see him get a little bit better at in the summer and we didn’t necessarily see him show the ability to beat his man off the bounce consistently. Uh, and if he is the point guard for this team going forward, that’s something that he has to work on. And I’m like, nothing against Bob Carrington whatsoever because he is learning a completely new role. He went from kind of being a score first two guard last year playing a lot off the ball. This is a completely different situation for him. So, I feel like he’d benefit from playing in another game here in the summer league. But we’ll start with Keith or with Trey Johnson for you, Abdullah. Have you seen enough for the Wizards to shut him down going forward ahead of tomorrow’s contest against of Philadelphia? Actually, tonight’s contest by the time this comes out. I saw enough after that play where he hit Kama Malaw watch his leg with the ball and wow that lay up a street ball and one move. To be honest, Trey Johnson, I’ve been hyping him up for a while, even before the Wizards drafted him. I’m always emphasizing how the fact that he fell to pick six is just amazing. And I I brought up the fact that the Mavericks are taking the approach after Cooper Flags. I think it was a 30 point game against the Spurs. They’re benching him or shutting him down for the rest of the summer league. So, I love Trey Johnson and I think he’s going to ball out there regardless of who he’s playing against these next two games. But, I think just because of precaution and concern. I also want to see guys like Jir Watkins get more offensive touches. Will Riley who had a great uh summer league game number two get more touches. I think that’s new enough from Trey Johnson. Maybe it would be nice to see how he does like in crunch time scenarios. Maybe give him the ball. But outside of that, he’s done enough. 18 points in the first game, second game, 21 points. The guy can shoot it from three. The guy can score at will, take it to the paint. I mean, can draw fouls at such a a guy at 19 years old, did it all at Texas. As much as I love to see any of these Whiz Kids play, I think just for safety going into his rookie season, just shut him down. We’ve seen enough. So the reason I want to see him play another game here because if the other guys in Bob Sar George are shut down for the remainder of the summer, I’m interested to see what Trey Johnson can do without some of the guys that have already been there done that with this team on the floor. If Trey Johnson can go out there and replicate the same success, maybe almost in a role where he’s kind of in a way carrying like he did at Texas, and I know he did it in the toughest conference in college basketball as an 18-year-old. I’d like to see it here at the next level in the NBA. I think that would be an opportunity maybe to see just how talented he is with the basketball in his hands because we’ve seen him score at all three levels uh through the first two contests. super impressed with how efficient he’s looked, how confident he’s looked if he doesn’t have some of the other supporting guys on the floor with him. How how different would it look? Would we see the same exact confidence? That’s what I’m interested. I’d love to see him play one more for me. Yeah, you Squid Game, they say one more game no from the last season. I agree with you, Ben. I I like that take. That’s interesting point because we saw in Texas where he was given the duties of go out there and get a bucket. So if you put in that situation, it brings to foreshadowing somebody’s gonna have to do his rookie year where you don’t have a guy in Jordan pool anymore that can create his own shot and Trey Johnson’s there. You you go get a bucket. I want to see that. So that’s an interesting point. But I still think just because take precaution summer league, there’s really no point of risking injury. You just never know what might happen. So it would be awesome to see Trey Johnson play back. I love Trey John. I want to see him play basketball, but I think long term for this rookie year, it’s best to just rest him. I mean, fair enough, the the kid put up 21 points yesterday on seven of 11 shooting, two of six from beyond the arc. Efficiency has just been incredible. And he has also found himself just making the right plays as a playmaker. Only finished with one assist, but the way he is able to move without the basketball, the the reads that he has make when he has the basketball in his hands, the kid can really do it all. But I’ve been the most impressed with his tenacity on the defensive side of the floor. and he said it perfectly after the game because they asked him about his defense. He said, “They don’t care if I score the basketball.” And obviously, they do care if he scores the basketball. That’s that’s why they drafted Trey Johnson because he’s a gifted scorer. But he said, “They don’t care if I can score or not. They care if I can play defense.” So, uh, you love to hear how he’s bought in to the mentality that they have tried to instill here. The effort has been so good from Trey Johnson. You know, he’s got the intangibles because he’s got a little bit better reach that uh than a lot of players of his size, almost 6’5 or around 6’5, almost 6’6. He looks good as an onball defender. Like he is very much adequate. And I know that’s something that not a lot of people expected, but I think this should have been the expectation for Trey Johnson. I think if you are drafted to the Wizards organization, the expectation is that you play defense on a night in nightout basis. Now, are they going to get that kind of effort from everyone across the board for an 82 game season? That remains to be seen because they looked like a completely different team in game one of the summer league in game number two. And I know I see how much stock do you buy into that? How much does it matter that they looked a little bit dull, didn’t came up flat? Uh hair looked on fire from a lot of these guys, especially Alex Sar in game number two compared to game one. How significant was that? How much did that really mean? like is there anything we could really take away from that effort-wise? What we’re going to see in the regular season, is there going to be anything different? Uh if the team does indeed struggle a lot and go on a big losing streak, I don’t know. It’s just something to note, I think, for right now. But overall, effort-wise, defensively, Trey Johnson, Bob Carrington, Keshan George, uh defending the ball on the perimeter has been so so excellent uh for me so far through the first two games. And that will continue tonight against Philadelphia. Another nice test for this Wizards team. I’m excited for the Trey Johnson and Alex Sar show again. I think they could be a dynamic duo. That pick and roll, pick and pop game. Alexar develops that three-point shot becomes more aggressive. And Alexar defensively, I can’t say it enough, man. We didn’t mention it, but that was a record. Eight blocks in a summer league game. Just again putting the D and DC. Something that we’ve been emphasizing for so long as Wizards fans. I can’t remember the last time we were a really good defensive team. probably back to the John Waller days where we were effortlessly going for loose balls, 50-50 balls, getting rebounds, hustling. That’s what we want to see. That shift to being that team that goes out there and is going to win every 50-50 ball and is going to go and out hustle you and not get blown out 99 out go on two 16g game losing streaks. I don’t think we’re going to see that Wizards team anymore. That those days are past us. So, I’m excited for this Wizard squad. And it all starts with Trey Johnson, Alex Sar, and these young guys. Another thing to note with Sar, if he is indeed shut down, if he doesn’t play the rest of the summer, um they’re going to struggle to win the rest of the way, if that is the case, because and I mean no disrespect to him when I say this because he’s someone that no one has any expectations for obviously, but uh Liam Robbins really has not impressed me at all through these first couple of games. I know he’s a body that’s out there. he, you know, provides what the Wizards really need at this point in the summer league, but they were significantly worse with him on the floor. It was very obvious to me, uh, watching the games. I know it doesn’t really matter how much they are actually winning in these summer league games. It’s just something, you know, that I thought of because, uh, Robins is hasn’t been it for me. Yeah, I’m emphasizing your point. I I was thinking the same. Really just struggling in his minutes. Didn’t provide much value and if he was trying to make an effort to do something, I saw it was like a a legal screen that he had and just wasn’t really productive. But again, summer league, maybe he’ll bounce back come game three. I will say though, there are a couple of guys that I think would get some pretty ample opportunities if guys were shut down. Jir Watkins and Leaky Black. Those two have really impressed me in the limited minutes that they’ve had throughout the summer. League. Watkins, he looks like a legit defender already. Like he has the capability to be really, really solid as a defender here in the NBA because he has such a high basketball IQ. He is quick to get in passing lanes, cut that off. Uh he looks the part as a defender. Will he develop his game offensively? That remains to be seen. AJ Johnson as well, he has looked like he’s been shot out of a cannon every time he has touched the basketball. Like that dude gets the ball on the wing and he attacks with insane tenacity. looks like he he just he’s kind of got reckless abandon. He’ll go up there and try to dunk on anyone. He doesn’t care what the results are. If he’s fouled, if he has to kiss it off the glass, or he’s going to bang it on your head. Like AJ Johnson is just that kind of player and it’s so damn exciting to watch. So, I’m looking forward to seeing more of him. So, I look at it both ways. if you have a lot of these year two guys and Trey Johnson uh play at least one more game here that gets another opportunity to see how those guys look together here and you know maybe a more fair assessment because game one versus game two look completely different for this team but if those guys are indeed done uh you’re going to get some looks at some other guys that could be you know key key pieces of the rotation in the upcoming season and for the future Dylan Jones did not play this past game only had nine minutes against the Phoenix Suns So, I want to see him get more opportunities come game three, game four, especially if year two guys aren’t going to be able to play. Yeah, Jones is interesting because between uh Brandham, Wesley, and him, those guys that have been brought in, uh I think one of those guys gets the final spot for this team. So, you might see two of those guys get waved, uh depending on how things goes. Um and Dylan Jones not playing yesterday obviously is, you know, it’s a big deal. I would have expected him to play more, but I, you know, he would not be a lock at this point for me to even make this team. So, those guys are going to have to be fighting for their final spot on the team as well. I agree. We’ll just have to see how it all plays out, but I’m hoping he gets those opportunities. Keshan George has been as advertised throughout the summer league, more than just an offensive player. He’s doing it all over the floor. He continues to shine in the Vegas summer league. A guy that I think a lot of people didn’t know a whole lot about coming out of Miami, but he really impressed a lot of people in the media, a lot of fans, me included. And wow, here in the summer league, he’s been able to do it all over the place, all over, you know, different uh positional areas. Keshan George has been able to contribute in so many different ways, both ends of the floor. And I think he’s made a case for himself going forward entering the year. He might be the Wizards best player of the young court as it stands right now. I mean, you put him right up there with Bal Koulibali in my opinion. And I’m not saying based on potential, but from what we’ve seen right now, I know Bal has an extra year on Keshan. Um, I think it’d be a fair case to make here that Keshan might be the best player of the young core right now. I don’t know if you would agree with that, Abdullah, necessarily because I think it’s it’s tough to put a guy who only played in one year compared to Koulibal. You have two who showed incredible flashes as well. Uh, but it’s almost like a 1A 1B thing for me right now between those two. Yeah, Keshan George uh this past game against the Nets, five steals. Are you freaking kidding me? Like a guy that can guard one through four, can shoot it from three, and just look so comfortable out there. And it’s amazing because you brought up the fact that he wasn’t really talked about out of the the three that were drafted last year. And I just didn’t really expect much of him coming out of Miami, but man, he got better every single game from game one to game 82. Defensively was getting in people’s faces. had nights where it looked like Steph Curry shooting from three. So, a guy like Keshan George definitely is something that brings versatility. That’s what Will Dawkins wants. A guy who can shoot it from three, defend the perimeter, defend in the paint, can back someone down for a bucket. It’s he checks off a lot of boxes that I don’t know, man. It might be too soon to say he’s the best guy on the team just because I want to see more come his sophomore year. I think Bal also there’s a lot to be proven. All a lot of these guys still need a lot to prove. Alexar, Bub Carrington, we’ll just have to see come this season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Kan George is the best player because at his size doing what he does, it’s fascinating watching him play basketball. Super fair assessment. I I can totally get behind exactly what you’re saying right there. He will have to replicate this in the regular season and a lot of this is just speak at this point because you know we’re basing this off what we see in the summer league. But this was the expectation all throughout the offseason. Will Dawkins said just wait until you guys see what Keshan George has been up to. I mean they cited him as a guy they thought had the best overall spring early summer uh in the weight room and that’s been evident. He looks strong. Like he’s got taller too, Ben. Yeah. And they he might grow even more. I think they’re hoping he gets to like 610. Uh because he is still growing. It’s such that’s the benefit of having these young guys is they continue to grow and fill out a little bit. The Wizards love skinny players. Like everyone we have is pretty skinny, I’d say. But that doesn’t necessarily matter. Like there’s plenty of reasoning to believe the guys they have right now have the body and the ability to be really good at the next level here. Keshan George looks way stronger. to me. And the ability that we’ve seen from him defending on the basketball and his IQ is just so good. I know he played in the professional league uh before he went to Miami, which I think was so beneficial for him. Like there’s things that translate from his game that just come from him being so intelligent on the floor. He consistently finds himself in the right spot. He sets sets himself up well defensively. He knows how to defend passing lanes. He knows when good opportunities are to go for steals. That’s how we got five of them last night. He does so many things well, including with the basketball, even as a playmaker. This dude really just does everything and he does everything relatively well. Yesterday was almost an anomaly because he shot three of 14 from the field, one of eight from beyond the arc. That’s an uncharacteristic offensive performance for Keshan George. yet he was still so impactful in that game doing everything on the floor you wouldn’t even bat an eye that he actually had a pretty tough night offensively. That’s how good he is. And that’s what separates players from just good players from average players. Guys who are struggling offensively shooting wise but still contributing rebounding, assisting the ball, steals Keshan George is just one of those dudes. I remember that game one against the Phoenix Suns. He got the I think it was a rebound off Bub Carrington’s block on Kla Malawatch takes it coast to coast right to K Malawatch gives him subs him and hits the weight tell him M hit the weight room that’s just something you love to see coming out of the ACC Miami really and you brought up the professional experience you put all that together you have a legit basketball player Keshan George and I am so excited again I keep mentioning it but he’s a big reason why Cory Kisser days in Washington are basically sing singular digit because someone that can shoot it take you to the rim defend and post up checks off so many boxes. It’s funny because I saw a lot of people buying uh into the comment that Will Dawkins had where he included Cory Kispert as members of veteran players uh that were beneficial to the team going forward. And a lot of people were saying this is proof that Kiss will be around this year. I don’t buy that notion. I still don’t. Why why would it serve his interest to say yeah we’re actively going to trade Cory Kispert or we don’t have plans for him going forward? Well, Dawkins is not going to say that on the ESPN broadcast that everyone is watching. He’s just not going to say that. So, I I don’t I don’t buy that notion whatsoever. Uh but I think George already has proven himself maybe to have even more abilities on the floor than a guy like Cory Kisspert. And Cory Kispert is a fine player. He can’t really add much to the team defensively, which is his biggest issue. And this Wizards regime is all about defense. And Keshan already one of the better defenders right now for someone his age. He led the rookie class with steals last year and it is showing here throughout the summer just how good he can be on that side of the basketball. It’s going to be exciting. A young guy who is part of this squad that we’re building and potentially could be the best player which is amazing because we have Trey Johnson, Alex Sar who’s only going to get better. Bub Carrington you traded for Cam Whitmore Bel Kulabali year three jump offensively. So many guys to watch out for but watch out for Keshan George. I like to give the nickname Threan. I like that. But maybe we could think of something else. Drop something in the comment section. I want to get see creative ideas. All I can say right now is Keshan George better be starting for this team uh come opening night. I don’t if someone if there’s a spot that needs to be taken for at the four, I’m assuming, right, Ben? You put he’s got to start at the four and then you put Bal at the three and I guess him and him and Whitmore could duke it out for minutes at that point. Whitmore. I mean, maybe you just run a a slightly bigger lineup and even put him like around at the two. Uh, it’s going to be fascinating to see they kind of rotate these lineups around. And I really have no idea what it’s going to look like, but Keshan, he’s got to be the starting four. I agree. I think that makes sense. And I think he’s going to prove why he’s going to be the four for the foreseeable future. And the Wizards playing a small lineup, especially if you have Keshan George playing at the four. The Wizards got even smaller today. Uh we’ll touch on that about the departure of one Rashawn Holmes when we come back here on Lockdown Wizards. All right, segment number three on Lockdown Wizards game day. Uh game number three, Wizards take on the Philadelphia 76ers tonight and we are looking forward to having the coverage of that postgame today. But some more news, the Wizards requested waiverss to make Rashawn Holmes officially a free agent. So Wizards only had $250,000 of his contract guaranteed and now they do save a pretty substantial amount of money. He was on a $12.8 million deal. So, he’s a guy that you could have seen at some point uh being used as trade bait, trying to stack up assets, but the Wizards essentially just effectively create a little bit more room uh to operate financially by waving Rashawn Holmes. And it it seemed like the writing was on the wall for it when the team brought back Marvin Bagley. It was expected. I think we thank him for his minutes that he gave and the mentorship when he was in the game. was out there slamming the ball down, being really effective in the paint. But it’s all about the young guys right now. And Tristan Vuvich maybe letting go Shawn Holmes. I’m not going to lie, last year I was a bit upset when I used to see Rashan Holmes in games, especially when the team wasn’t winning at all over him getting minutes over a guy like TV. But now you bring back TV, you bring back Marvin Bagley, Keshan at the four starting, Alex Sar, interesting front court lineup. And again, it’s all about the youth movement here. And it’s so surprising that Cory Kisser’s still on this roster. Ben, every day I’m like waiting for the notification that he’s going to be dealt, but Rashan Holmes is out before Corey. And it was an expected move like we mentioned. Could he have been traded for assets? Maybe there wasn’t any available. But you let go of Rashan Holmes and now opens up opportunities for Tristan Bujic to have a good year three. One thing I’ll miss about Rashawn Holmes, and he’s a guy that did start some games toward the end of the season, his effort was always on 100. He was always pretty much buying in to what exactly the Wizards need from him on the floor. And you can make the argument right now rebounding wise other than TV. Rashad Holmes was a guy that actually could go out and get you boards uh pretty consistently. And Alex Sar, that’s something that he’s going to have to work on. Holmes was a guy that would go out there and he was going to play hard. He found himself in position boxing out well. That’s one thing I think Alex Sar needs to work on is positioning himself to be in better spots to box out uh and grab rebounds. But the Wizards, they get a little bit smaller. And I think it does make sense though. You do bring back Tristan Vuvich obviously who they’d like to see a lot more of this year. Um and then the of course the addition of Marvin Baggley for a little bit cheaper to bring him back. And I who knows maybe they flip him again at the deadline. That’d be a pretty wild scenario where you have a guy you trade him then you sign him again in free agency then trade him again. And I don’t it’s probably happened at some point. The NBA is a wild wild league uh to say the least, but it’s not a move that anyone didn’t expect and I don’t have any issue with it, but uh you know, I think it’s it’s fair to give a nice farewell here to Rashawn Holmes because he he gave the effort every single night. He was a guy that was good for the culture, a good mentor for a lot of these young players, and I think he did a nice job at doing what he needed to do here in his time in Washington. And it’s insane because you’re on a losing team as well. You’re still giving 110% when there’s superstars out there that doing load management which is still to me is so annoying. So thank you Rashan Holmes. We we appreciate your contributions here in Washington. Definitely bringing back the mentorship and I’m hoping that CJ McCullum and Chris Middleton will carry that mentorship that we have here in DC. Yeah, it’s going to be interesting to see how things shape up with those two. Marcus Smart, what happens with him before the season because he seems to be someone that everyone has written off. There’s no way he’s around when the season starts. But I don’t know. I like to I try to stay on my toes a little bit here around Will Dawkins because on times where I’ve I’ve let my guard down, suddenly I I will be shocked by that man. And then that’s just the way it’s been. But I think that’s a good thing. You don’t want to have a GM that’s predictable. Never let them know your next move. And Will Dawkins has not done that by any means. Playing chess, not checkers. It’s insane. Everyone was talking about Jonathan Kaminga and then we find out that we traded for Kim Whitmore. That’s how GMs, that’s how business should be done. That’s what separates the good GMs from the great GMs. And Will Dawkins just again putting on another master class. I love what he’s doing here and the results are going to come. You just got to be patient. That is exactly right. 8:30 p.m. Eastern time is when Philadelphia in Washington allegedly get underway. That’ll probably start at 9:00 if we’re being honest because the summer league games start so much later after they are actually Yeah, I was wondering like why is that a thing? I I was It was like 8 last game it started at 8:00 against the Nets and it was like 8:10 or like 8:15. I’m like it’s still 00 I was I thought my phone was behind. No, it’s the game before whatever runs long most of the time. So that’s just kind of how it works. Like the Wizards only had four minutes to warm up for that game. It’s legit like a AOU, like a wreck league. It’s a show and go. In baseball, sometimes if there’s a rain delay, you don’t even get a batting practice or time to stretch. You just show up and say, “Go play.” That’s exactly what summer league is like. They go out there, you know, maybe do like three layup line minutes and then they go, “All right, go out there. Go go go play full game right now.” So, it it’s funny. That’s why summer leagues, some people say don’t buy any stock into it because of stuff like that happening. But, uh, it’s been a fun experience watching our Whiz kids go at it here in the summer league. And hopefully tonight, uh, we see some more good things. Hopefully, we’ll we’ll get an indication at some point throughout the day of who’s going to play. I guess that’s stuff that’s probably not going to come out until closer to game time. But, as I mentioned earlier, I hope to see a lot of these guys still playing tonight, but we’ll see. And Philly isn’t going to play BJ Ecom. He’s out. So, it gives you opportunity for Trey Johnson or the young guys to go out there and just put more emphasis on attacking this Philly team, which I don’t really know many of the young guys on that summer league roster. But one thing I wanted to say, this is irrelevant to Wizards, and I’m sorry about bringing up LeBron again because clearly you guys don’t like it. Ben, I have a strong feeling, or not strong, but a weird feeling that he’s going to get traded. It just right now this Lakers roster I just don’t think it’s anything can be competitive can’t be competitive in this Western Conference with Dallas with the Clippers with the Nuggets, the Thunder, the Timberwolves. Am I crazy for thinking that LeBron might not be a Laker this upcoming year? I don’t think he will be either. I think it’s in the best interest of both parties honestly if they they move forward and get a deal done because uh even with Luca Donuch on the table, I think he’s a guy that also might get traded eventually as well. I I think the Lakers new ownership is coming in. Um they they can’t operate like a mom and pop shop anymore. Like that just has not worked for the Los Angeles Lakers. I know LeBron has got a ton of money uh guaranteed when he opted in $51 million on this deal. But I think it’s in the best interest of both parties that they part ways here and we haven’t really heard much. But I don’t think it looks good for the Los Angeles Lakers in terms of still being in the LeBron business come next season. Yeah. And if I’m LeBron James right now, I want I want to win that championship. Come to the East this year. A lot of teams are dealing with injury with the Achilles injury with Tatum and Tyrese Halleurn and Damen Lillard. Tre Johnson is better than Ace Bailey.
🫡Yup, I'm good. Bub, Tre, Ky and Sarr can chill. No point risking injury playing with desperate grown men playing for jobs.
