What are your impressions of Dylan Harper in his first NBA summer league action? Man, that boy poised. He you can tell he come from an NBA background. Boy, just look natural and he look like he take his time out there. He’s not rushing. Seemed to do all the little things, too. I think that’s something that the Spurs like when you play both ends. And he just look like he he’s smart out there and know the game. And there’s been talk too. I think Wimby recently had some comments basically saying asked him if he thinks the Spurs should try to trade some of these guys for a superstar. He said no ride with these young guys. Let’s really build some here. Seems like you’re really in the process of doing that. Stefon Castle obviously hard for Carter Bryant who we’ll talk about in a second, but it seems like the Spurs are building a really strong young core. Like I I mean Spurs I mean just watching him play the mannerisms, the style, the speed, the poise, the passing ability. You got him and Castle’s about what 652 himself. So you got your back court sitting around 65 66. Both actually are athletic. So you got your one and your two both 66 and both got sneaky jumping. Yeah. Bounce, sneaky height. Me right now as a general manager and I’m watching him play and watching how he’s moving. I don’t know what I want to do with Fox because having him at the one, two, three doesn’t even make sense to me anymore. Him coming off the bench doesn’t even make sense to me anymore. If I want this to be a championship team, I need him and Castle to start playing today. I don’t need no waiting period. I need them to get all of the minutes and learn how to just be efficient. Now with Wendy, now you have Carter Bryant that looks like he’s going to be a defense. He look like he’s damn near He look like he’s a man already. We’re going to talk about that. You know what I mean? He’s 16. He is 16. That’s what I’m saying. He’s 67 with a shoe. 67 without his sho. So now you have that at your three. So instead of going guard, guard guard, now you got your guard guard. both athletic and you’re small forward. Athletic as [ __ ] then you got a power forward and your center. You’re talking about a whole different team. Are you taking are you waiting for that process though? That’s the problem. I don’t want to What I’m saying is I don’t want to wait. I’m I’m going to use this year cuz but Wimby it’s going to be they going to be getting their ass whooped. But if Wimby plays 65 70 games, right? Bounces back from the defense on which he’s been cleared to return to the court earlier than expected. I think it was supposed to be September. got cleared who recently to get back to the court. Yeah. No, but I need to I bad. All right. As somebody that been in a sim similar situation, what would you tell Fox then? Like cuz he’s a allstar. Obviously Fox. Where do you want to No, what I’m saying is Fox is obviously better. Fox is better. Fox like No, but that’s what I’m saying. Fox is better right now. But you give him a year to maybe learn underneath him, right? And then I don’t want to. You don’t think you don’t think that’s a good move? No, he want to go now because Fox is an allstar. He’s an allNBA player. He is going to let him go. He’s a top top seven, top 10 guard. But I I have I have my future here and we’re not good enough right now for Fox to be playing 38 minutes and him playing like 10. I don’t need that. So, if I think these two 66 dudes that can jump out the gym is my future, I need to I need to fast forward them now. Just throw them into the fire. Why did you get him? Yeah. Who? Fox. Well, this before you got the Before I got the number, you know what I mean? But Fox is still leverage for them though to get It’s no different. It’s no different pieces though. It’s no different than than the Lakers with with with Cole. He is. But I got Eddie Jones. Cool. And then you sitting there watching practice like I got a young Kobe. [ __ ] He do the same thing cuz Eddie Jones was a Eddie Jones was a allar and it was like Yeah. All right. You know what? Ah, we just we’re just going to move on now. We don’t need you to fight no minutes. We’re just going to give him the minutes. Could have been a good threeman. Who? Eddie Jones. But like, but that’s athletic. But that’s what I’m saying. At the at the point they’re just like it’s so close. I’m like, yeah, Eddie just, you know what? Let me just go move you somewhere else so you can play your minutes and then let Cole. So, but you don’t think it’d be good for for a guy like Dylan Harper to learn under Darren Fox for a season. Have Yeah. less stress, less strain coming into his rookie year. Learn from an allNBA level guard. That’s the value of Fox too though. He’s going to still play Harper a lot of minutes and it’s going to be up and down for Fox through his confidence and knowing that he’s about to be replaced anyway. Like I’m grooming I’m grooming that I’m I’m only [ __ ] 20some. Yeah, that’s not good for somebody confidence, bro. If you going to do that, like I’m not saying I want to like I don’t want to get rid of Fox because I know what type of player he is. But I’m looking at these 266 jumping one. They both play a one two and then I got I got Carter Bryant showing like damn you you are like a amen out here, right? You are one your defense is already elite. Yeah, for sure. Your offense is going to kick in at some point, but the you three athletic guys with Wimby and our four, you guys grow three, four years together, we can be dangerous. You got nothing for cheap for a couple and that’s what I’m saying. And you’re cheap, your money cheap. If you have one of these OKC years where y’all both jump out the window fast, I’m I’m I’m good with that. Is the most disrespected and the Spurs have a like allar in the NBA. It’s just one of those it’s just one of those situations where him and Donovan mention I think the Spurs in a good situation. I mean they got good problems to have as they have leverage with Fox but they also known for like developing players if you’re Fox Tony Parkery like the Spurs. That’s what I’m saying like but even with even with Tony Parker they’re looking at him like okay you’re going to start off day one. That’s what I’m saying. You should have traded Fox to Boston and [ __ ] for Bzinski and Drew Holiday. I mean, you don’t but you don’t know it until you But what I’m saying is you learn from Holiday. No, what I’m saying is you don’t know it until you see him like that. That’s I said just just the just the little 20 minutes that you’re seeing. I’m like I I like the I like I like the attributes and I don’t know and I don’t know if I want to play all three of them while like Carter’s coming off the bench. Like I want them to I want them to learn today. Okay. See that’s why summer league is important though just like you said you can see attributes before. Yeah I can see that. So like that’s why it’s like you know you can see a little something like I mean it isn’t so much even guy goes out there makes miss the shots the type of shots he’s taking and you got to know all right down the line he might miss these shots in summer league. These are good shots he’s going to make them in the league. It’s just his play like Cooper Flax play like I know you’re not going to trade Fox like you’re not going to trade Fox. You got to right. No, we you’re gonna you’re gonna play Fox and then try to figure out how to play this fourman rotation and then a year from now then you’re gonna realize I need to trade Fox. A duh. Well, that’s what I’m saying. I’m just fast forwarding this [ __ ] a year from now coming to the same conclusion. But sometimes, you know, it’s going to be the No, it’s going to be the same conclusion. You’re going to have Dylan sitting there doing his thing and you’re going to be sitting like, “Okay.” Then you have Carter Bryant coming off the bench sitting there picking up that pace. And then you’re going to realize these three together is packing a bigger punch, especially defensively back defensively. You’re not going to be able to post this group up. Think about it. Think about the guards that you’re not going to be able like Shay’s not going to be he’s just not going to have an easy way posting these strong ass guards up. Fox get to the basket. Spurs going to finally be fun. Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Bryant. Carter Bryant. He’s going to guard one through four. He’s going to guard one through four. They always been the most boringest team, but with these young guys and how athletic. So, you’re going to come to that conclusion. Crafty. The also grabbed Luke Cornette from the Celtics this off season. I’m saying they got some they got some bigs that can play in in a support role. But I think Wimby obviously trying to make the playoffs now. I’m just saying it sounds like a bad take. It sounds like a bad take because you can’t see it. uh next summer or the year after. Watch what the starting lineup is. Where can you where can you see Fox? What should the starting lineup is? It’s gonna be two guarding Fox right now. That should have been hard. Fox Brown this year and white that have been cold. Fox. Yeah. Where can he go now? I know you can’t trade him to Boston no more. So where could he go? Wizards. Bryant pass with Guard Cooper flag in their meeting Saturday. This is what changes that lineup. So Carter Bryant in this summer league, but he locked up the number one pick. That’s what I’m saying. Damn. Flag was three of 12 from the field, two turnovers of Bryant as his primary defender. Uh and the Spurs showed they were locked in as a defensive unit on another possession with Harper and Bryant leading the charge, forcing a 24-second violation. Let’s take a look at this defense right here. You see what I’m saying? Like getting after it. Yeah, this the one right here. Oh, no. No. Show the blocks he had. No, but I was just saying look at it. But just look at how it looks. Look at the rotations. And the thing is with him being in there, it’s going to be so long. Now, now what I’m saying is if you are planning on putting Fox, Dylan, and Western at three, you’re sitting there with Carter Bryant him. How long before you say, “Fuck.” Okay, let me just put him in Atlanta. That’s what I’m saying. How long before you say, “Okay, I got They’re long. Yeah, he got to start.” You know what I’m saying? So now you got Damn. He for sure could be a three and D, huh? At the four. That’s the dude with the blind here, man. Get that [ __ ] out of He’s at the four. He can come off to the at the one. And I think the guys that they have and as they should, it’s just like, you know, I trust the Spurs in this situation. So, as I mentioned, Wimi fully cleared uh to come back to the court earlier than expected while recovering from that deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. Yeah, I remember um what was the year John Wall John Wall went to Houston? Yeah. Yeah. I remember he averaged Here it is. He averaged 20 and seven. They got rid of Houston. Think about what I’m saying. He averaged 20 and seven. They got rid of him. And then the next year they told him, “Don’t show up because they said you’re good enough to win games we don’t want to win.” and at your position, we want we want these guys to actually play so we can see who they’re going to be. So they told a guy who averaged 20 and seven to just stay home cuz we don’t like we don’t want to win. We don’t want to win, but more than that said, more than that, we want we want the guy that’s behind you who is our future to get them reps in. Who was that? And it it it played out in the way it was supposed to. obviously rocking second in the West season. But it’s just crazy to me to think, oh man, you might you might impact winning too much. Go ahead. We just pay you the spread. [ __ ] You might have these dudes thinking they could do it like we good. That’s [ __ ] up though. But that’s how that’s how the John Wal. Wow. So So back to Wimby Wimby fully cleared. How far away realistically do you think the Spurs are for being a championship level roster? I think playoffs right now and this season is a good target to have. But if this young crew develops the way they’re hoping they can and Wimby comes back and plays at the level we know he can play at, I’m going say three years. Three, four years. So within three years, three years. Yeah. I mean, I like the Spurs system, so I know once they get them guys locked in, they young right now, but yeah, I’ll give them I mean, cuz it’s going, you know, the Spurs like to bring guys in. Yeah. But playoffs for sure though. I got to make it the playoffs for sure this year. Hey, Wendy’s Day. Legit playoffs or playing top six or they going to have to fight for it? Probably playing get it. Okay. Well, [ __ ] What did it make in the playoffs? You could use Harper like seven or eight like James Harden. But OKC’s main guy is 26. I know, but I’m saying they OKC had like a rust that’s like Fox similar to and they got Wimby like a KD and they bring James off the bench. So Har could be James J. Okay. So they could do it. You can figure it out. All right. So what? Four. Four seasons ago. That’ll be Wim six season. Mhm. Four or five. If Wim be healthy year three, four or five. We feel like he’s competing for defensive player of the year. He’s going to be defensive player of the year. But offense that the team just ain’t old enough yet for them. Like he been training with Shaolin Monks. He breaking boards with his mom. He But they still need reps themselves. Three years. Okay. Three. Three years. Three years. Wouldn’t be in three years would be like Shaq when Jordan retired. Trying to be the new Kareem. You know, Kareem used to do karate and [ __ ] Yeah. You fought Bruce Lee. Yeah. It’ be like when Jordan retired and then Lakers is favorite because they’re they had Shaq like but people don’t understand that part. Like Bulls was when Shaq got to LA it was Bulls. It was Michael Jordan. the day he retired, Lakers was favored or um Shaq was favored to win the championship. They won, they had a lockout and that’s how Spurs got it because [ __ ] wasn’t healthy. Then that’s when Lakers started dominating. Um, in three years I think Wimby himself will be dominant enough to control a game by himself offensively and defensively cuz defense I mean and then from there it’s with the guys that he got you got a Carter Bryant with you. You got the now you’re talking about like you’re talking damn near like Detroit when Ree Wallace got there. Now you’re really talking about holding people to that 90 100 points just off defense and then you can find a way to score. Yeah. Oh, Portland and Pippen got Yeah, that’s you can find a way to score. But I didn’t remember them [ __ ] What? It was good. They added Pip and then don’t let them get a [ __ ] some another goddamn hybrid that can goddamn play defense, too. I think they will. Well, they going to pick up like that and and then just and then just say we’re going to lock everybody defensively. pick up like that on a real NBA player though. Who? Dylan Harper. Can’t try to do that [ __ ] 94 ft on um 94 I mean 94 ft on Brunson. Can’t do that on Brunson. Yeah, he can do that on Brunson cuz Brunson don’t have foot speed and Brunson’s not trying to Brunson.
