We’ve got questions about Miami’s interest in LeBron uh options at backup center that we’ll get to here in a second. But let’s start with this question from Billy who writes in, “Does the addition of Norm Pal give Miami its most versatile offense since the big three?” David, you and I got this question a few days ago and we’ve been saving it for a mailbag episode because I think it’s fascinating and I don’t I I’ve been kind of batting it around in my head since then. I think I figured out where I landed on it. Where are you? I don’t know if I’m quite ready to go there just yet. I I think when I look back at the big three era and I mean obviously you can pretty much ignore everything that happened from 2014 to 2019 in the acquisition of Jimmy Butler because that was most mostly just trying to peiemeal whatever parts were available into a workable offense. And there were some moments there where it didn’t quite work out. You had tried incorporating Hassan Wid that kind of stifled what you could do offensively. It was the end of Dwayne Wade’s ten first tenure in Miami. Um, so I I I don’t know if I believe that this offense could be as versatile. To me, I think the the first year of the Jimmy Butler experiment with Myers Leonard at center, I think really gave them a stretch ability at that point in time. That really helped. Yeah, that really helped keep Miami uh kind of in a very fluid and versatile. There were a lot of different options there because you had Goran Dragage, you had Jimmy who wasn’t missing every other game and he was very engaged. You had Bam playing at his first all-star level. Uh and you had Leonard who could really stretch the floor with his three-point shooting ability. So, there were a lot of different options there for that team that I don’t know if this group can necessarily replicate unless Khil Wear becomes that kind of accurate three-point shooter that we’ve seen from him of late over summer league. And if that’s the case, then sure. But I I don’t think either of us are banking on that being the consistent norm from where. And I don’t know that he necessarily needs to provide that. But just in context of this question, I think that’s what would be the difference for me is that where isn’t necessarily the kind of three-point shooting stretch big that Leonard was. Cloair is a better lob threat than they’ve had. No doubt. Since Gez uh wow, right? since LeBron. Yeah. Right. Like since LeBron, like since Chris Anderson. Um I And he wasn’t really a lob threat. He was more of a catch it in the air and kind of tip it in threat. Um and and that’s so that’s there’s a versatility with that. The problem with if you look at the big three and what made them so versatile was there so much ball handling, man. Like between D. Wade and LeBron, you just had two genius level playmaker, passer, read the floor guys, and you always and decision makers, right? Like you just always trusted what they were going to do. Not to mention Chris Bosch and and the inverted offense that he uh allowed them to play and the shooting from guys like Shane Badier and Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen and Mario Chamers and and all these other guys on the roster. But to to Billy’s question, he’s not asking if Pal can be if this offense can be as versatile as the Big Three one. It’s just is it the most versatile since the big three? And I think I landed in the same place you did with that 2019 2020 team, the first Jimmy Butler team. That team finished uh seventh in offensive rating that year. That was a good offense. And you had obviously the first year of Jimmy Butler who was near the peak of his regular season powers at that point. Um this is before he started sort of sandbagging and doing the whole playoff Jimmy thing. Uh, you had Goran Dragic, still a very good player who unfortunately got hurt in the bubble that year. Chris Dunn was awesome for them as a rookie. I’m not Kendrick Nun. Kendrick Nun. Chris Dunn. Uh, Kendrick Nun was awesome for them as a rookie. Uh, you had later on you added Andre Guidala who’s a trusted ball handler. You added Jay Crowder who shot like a million% for Miami that when when he got a could not miss out of the corners. there was just so many guys who could score and do stuff. Not to mention the centers that you already talked about. So with Oolen and Myers Leonard. So I think that right now has the lead for most versatile offense since the big since LeBron James left in 2014. But if we’re envisioning an offense where this one if we’re envisioning a world where this offense can rival the 2019 offense, it would be that Norm Pal and Tyler Herro share the duties as your lead ball handlers. Bam Adabio has a bounceback season. Um Andrew Wiggins is ju just provides you that bottom of the ledger type of production, you know, 17 or 18 points per game and every once in a while just pops off for a big 30 point night, right? Every once every two weeks or so as he’s want to do and then maybe one other guy pops whether it’s and if it’s Nicola Yoic or Haime Hake Jr. guys who have legit ball handling chops. Yeah, I could see this group getting close to that 2019 group. There’s a lot of options. Um, so within the context of of the question, it’s hard to determine because we haven’t seen it, but it I I do like your approach in the sense that yeah, I could see this offense rivaling what we saw in 2019 and being not on par with the big three because that was historically good, but also in terms of just different options, players that could do a number of different things. I I think we’re seeing we’ve got two top scorers in Palo and hero and I think the they’ll be able to play together and continue their scoring out, but I don’t think they’re going to necessarily cut into each other’s numbers to that kind of degree because they’re both playmakers. They’re both capable of shooters obviously. Um and they do handle the ball well. They can and have been playing off of guys their entire career anyway. Yeah, exactly. Putting up it shouldn’t be it shouldn’t be a conflict of interest there. I I think to your point, Bam does need to play better than he did at the start last year and I think we’ll see that because he’s had a long protracted off seasonason as opposed to playing in the Olympics and everything else like that. So there’s a good chance that we’ll see a bounce back from him. You and I think that he will. Yeah. Yes. If Khil continues what he did in summer league or what he’s shown us so far in summer league, I think that’s bodess well. Uh and then you have lots of options with Wiggins certainly Fonte the younger players in Yovic and Hakez who I think are going to play well as well uh you know uh in addition and then Haywood Heismith all the players in the rotation seem like they’ll be able to have a much clearer role on this team offensively because of the addition of Powell. Like we’ve talked for a long time that they needed that number one scorer in order to be able to set that kind of hierarchy and they haven’t had that. playoff Jimmy did that but sparingly and so they just haven’t had that for a number of seasons during the regular season and I think with the addition of Pal not saying he’s a superstar but at least you’ve got your go-to scoring option between him and hero and that alleviates things for everybody else to kind of find their niche and thrive in that role. So I I think you’re looking at a lot of different versatile options on this roster that can find ways to contribute. It should work. It should work. I I think they might still be missing the uh the typical alpha role player on the on the team. That’s the problem because it still feels like a systembased offense. No doubt. Which works in college basketball but doesn’t really work in the NBA. And that is where I’m going to hold judge withhold judgment. As good as guys like Pal and Hero are, what Jimmy Butler was providing this team when he was engaged, there’s nobody on this team that can recreate that on a consistent basis. And and again going back to 2019, he was engaged every single game. He was out there doing that kind of stuff. So um without I remember talking to you about it. Sorry not to interrupt, but I remember talking to you about it as you were, you know, you were covering the Warriors at that point in time and you would pop on just because of your allegiance to Miami and everything else like that. So but you would pop on every once in a while. I remember talking about how there were games there that not since LeBron had I seen a player kind of just gather or gauge like the pace of the game to see what was required of him. And and we stopped seeing that from Jimmy because he just wasn’t capable of it as he got older. Like there were still great moments and I don’t want to take anything away from Jimmy Stint in Miami, but that first year it was so evident that he could look at the first and second quarters and be like, “Okay, I need to be playmaker Jimmy.” And then save it for the second half. He stopped losing that ability to do so. Yeah. He was able to go from gear to gear within a game. And Jimmy Butler towards the end of his tenure in Miami, he would go gear to gear, week to week, month to month, season to season almost at at the very tail end of it there and it just he wasn’t able to do it in the game quite as much, especially if it wasn’t in the playoffs. But that’s what the Heat need and I don’t know that they necessarily have that yet. That said, there is a just with the the the breadth of talent. I think there’s more offensive talent on this team than there is in the 2019 just in yes quantity, right? Like when you kind of get but they just don’t have that quality guy at the very top. So, we’ll see. Um, how real is Miami’s interest in LeBron James? Plus, what are the Heat’s plans for backup center? We discuss some of the options after this. Thanks for making Lockdown Heat your first listen every day. Malachi writes in, “Can you guys discuss some of the backup center options and possibilities for the Heat? That’s the main thing I see lacking about this team right now. You know what time it is, David. You know, I got a list. I got a list of guys. But before I get to my list, was there is there a name that you wanted to explore? Any names that you were thinking about? You know, the name that I like best, and I’ve said it for a while now, and I think he uh he fits in with the culture and everything else like that. I I would love to see Al Horford wearing a Heat jersey. I’ve talked about that for a long time. Even going back to the year where Miami had to choose between Hassan Whiteside and or and anybody else, I wanted Horford on this team more than I wanted Whiteside because of the three-point shooting, because of the rebounding, the versatility, the leadership, all those things. He’s just he’s just a winning player in a way that I never really felt Hassan was. And so, even though he’s older, I still think he would be a great option for Miami. A guy that again veteran, younger players can look to, veterans would feel comfortable. He’s a solid locker room presence, three-point shooter, etc. It there’s not much to to pick at when it comes to Horford’s game, and a chance for him to end his Hall of Fame career with a Heat would be a good one. Um, I would love for them to make that call. All the reporting suggests that Al Horford is going to Golden State, but it hasn’t happened yet. So, I mean, I think about all the reporting pointed to Brook Lopez ending up with the Lakers. He ended up with the Clippers. So, I I don’t know what’s real, what’s not. I and I’m I’m assuming the Warriors thing is because they’re still holding up on Jonathan Kaminga and trying to figure out that whole situation, whatever it might be. I know that they’re also linked to the Anthony Melton. So, they might just have agreements sort of in place with these guys and they’re just waiting. But again, I until these guys are signed, they’re not signed. So, Al Horford would be the dream target, but it might be a pipe dream at this point um considering all the reporting around Horford. So, um I’ll tell you a guy that I saw in summer league and I was a little surprised. Uh when the Heat played the Celtics, I saw Charles Bassie in a Celtics summer league jersey. You know, I’ve liked Bassie for a while. Just a effort guy, attacks the offensive glass, isn’t going to score a ton of points for you, but I don’t like I’m not looking for my future Hall of Fame center. I’m just looking for a guy who could play 5 to 10 minutes when wear or bamio or in foul trouble or tweak a hamstring or something like that. I He’s He’s a good culture guy. I like him. I I like him a lot as a hustle guy coming off the bench. Um, and he’s on Boston’s summer league roster, but I don’t know what the Celtics plan is, right? I I don’t think that they are planning for Bassie to be part of their 15-man roster necessarily, right? He can earn it, but what if Miami comes offering a a deal for a backup center uh position? I I think that could be that could be interesting. What What is Boston’s planet center? They traded away Porzingis. They are losing Horford and Free. Do they have a planet center? So, they signed Luke Garza. Um what that’s their plan at center. They lost the I was talking to uh Bobby Manning who does stuff for CLNS over um uh covering the Celtics and I asked him I was like what’s the plan dude and he goes it’s going to be a lot of Luke Garza uh Neimus Kada right who they’ve had for a couple years now um and they still have Xavier Tilman bopping around. I know he basically didn’t play the second half of last year at all but that it’s the worst center to your point. the worst center position in the league right now. Yeah, worst center rotation around the league. No doubt. Um, congratulations. Yeah, they could still trade. They’re still trying to trade Simons. So, maybe they get a center in that deal, but I don’t I don’t know who’s I don’t know who’s taking Simons, right? Like may eventually maybe they get something done, but who knows? So, uh, other names on my list, DeAndre Jordan is out there. I mean, they don’t really have an old head in the locker room. DeAndre Jordan can walk in kind of be the Kevin Love of the group. Um, I don’t know what I don’t know how much he’s got left in the tank, but I don’t know that you need a whole lot there. Again, yeah, I this is a guy who is probably again 48 minutes at center are mostly being split between Bam and Wear in some way, shape, or form. Um, so we’re not talking about even nightly minutes. So DeAndre Jordan’s out there. Alex Len was another one um that’s just out there. Um, just a big body. Micah Potter, who played last year for Utah, but spent some time with Sou Falls in the G-League and was a Heat summer league guy a few years ago. He’s out there. There’s a familiarity. I just thought worth putting him on the list. Um, and then uh Norchad Amir. So, he’s uh playing well in summer league for Cleveland. I saw him in person uh and he had like 10 points against the Heat in their summer league game. undersized at 67ish, kind of a power forward center type, but he’s a free agent. Played a little bit at M. So, Hurricanes fans remember him. I kind of like him. I don’t again, you know, beggars can’t be choosers here. We’re talking about bottom of the barrel type of players. If you’re looking for a guy who has a little bit of familiarity with the Miami scene, maybe somebody that Eric Spolster has familiarity with given that he played a little bit at M um and played well against Miami in that summer league game. That’s an option, too. I have three uh other type of trade targets, but before I get to them, any of those names popping out to you? We got orier. Who else? I have Ormier, Potter, Len, DeAndre Jordan. Um Oh, you know, my my tendency is to prefer the the old head a little bit. And so DJ, I think would be a nice fit there. Always beloved, cracks everybody up from an interview perspective. Selfishly, I think he would be great in a lot. That’s such a great point, too, because what was the thing that we kept talking about at the end of last season that the locker room lacked joy. Yep. DeAndre Jordan would bring a levity to the group. He would in many ways kind of replace what you lost with Kevin Love. Absolutely. I I see a lot of their similarities in their personalities. Uh and a guy like DJ who’s been around so many different locker rooms always fits in pretty seamlessly there. So, it would not be any problem incorporating how many wouldn’t grumble for minutes. this wouldn’t be a uh a mechanic situation. I’m drawing a blank here to that’s what his name was. So, he wouldn’t be necessarily somebody who wants extended minutes coming off the bench. He’s he’s comfortable at this point in where he is in his career. He’s won his championship. He’s made his money. He’s got his all-star accolades. I think he’s fine. So, I I you’re not going to get much out of the position, but like you said, you don’t really need much either. So, he’s a safe option. Yes. Oh, okay. I was like the mechanic. I was like, you remember the nickname the super nickname? I could I could Yeah, I couldn’t rec I couldn’t recall his first name Deadmond, but um um he played in the Olympics in 2016 also. Yeah. So, what was was Spo on the staff at that point? I don’t think he was. I don’t think so. No, he hadn’t cut his teeth yet. So, he was fresh off the I don’t think so. I think 2020 the Japan year and then France obviously. I think those were the two seasons where he was there alongside Steve Ker. But yeah, I like DeAndre Jordan. Uh a few trade options too, like if if Miami is able to move swap Rosier for somebody or something like that. Nicola Vousvich or Zack Collins. We get asked about those guys all the time. Mostly Vousvich, but both of them are on um Chicago’s roster. Both expiring contracts. If you wanted to just basically swap one backup who barely plays for another backup who doesn’t really play, that’s an option. But again, like are you really going to trade for Vousvich and not play him because you’re you’re gonna you have to play where? You have to play Bam obviously. Like there’s not a ton of minutes there. Yeah, I think Collins is a better option there. But uh because he’d be more uh willing to accept the backup role because that’s just his career has been as a backup. So I don’t think he expects all of a sudden to be promoted to the starting level. The other name would be Dwight Powell out of Dallas. again. I love love love talking to Powell. Not getting much production out of him though, so I’m not sure if necessarily the best. Um, and then the other one I had was uh Musa Diabate. And the only reason I bring him up is Charlotte has like a hundred guys on their roster. I don’t know if you’ve looked at their they just keep getting adding people. They need to they literally need to cut the roster. So they’re allowed to hold up to 20 players at this point, but by the time the regular season starts, they have to trim down. I think they’re literally at 18 right now. and Diabate was pretty good for them at the end of last season for anybody who was watching Charlotte, which nobody was, but you know, we were. Um, he’s got a non-g guaranteed contract. He’d be easy for them to wave. Now, I don’t know that how much the Hornets care about non-G guaranteed versus guarant. They’re a pretty cheap roster. They could just wave guys on guaranteed contracts, eat the money, and just move on. So, I think that’s probably what they would do because they like Diabate. I would imagine they like Diabate because he was good for them. If whatever reason they do wave him because he’s one of the few players on non-g guaranteed contract, I would be if I’m another team, I’m scooping that guy up. That is a hustle big with some real upside. Uh I like I don’t know that he could be a long-term starter in the NBA, but he could be a long-term backup, which is pretty good to find at that at that point. So, um I also to a larger point though, I feel like this needs to be addressed because I know a lot of fans are concerned. I don’t think they I don’t get the sense the heat is concerned and I don’t think they necessarily have to be either because to your point you’re going to have a lot of players in between now and the start of training camps that are going to get cut weights etc. Uh and they’re not in any rush. They have two quality centers on the roster so they can’t afford to wait it out. They can be great again to get a guy like Horford, but given the team’s cap restraints and everything else like that, bringing a guy in a a vet minimum like Horford probably not the best option as opposed to say a younger player. They’re 1.3 million above the luxury tax right now. So on one hand, you say you got to get under the luxury tax anyway. So just sign the guy and you’re going to have to make a move to get under the tax regardless. So just fill out the roster, get the big that you need. They do need a big at some point, but to your point, they can wait. They don’t have to do that right now. And that’s probably what they’re doing. They’re probably going through summer league. They’re waiting for roster cuts and they’re, “Okay, then we’ll just pick up a guy.” And they’re not the only team in the league doing that, by the way. Boston’s probably doing that, too. So, um, we’ll see what happens. But then there’s also Vlad Golden on the two-way, who they quite like, and he’s you could go into the season playing him as your emergency, uh, center, and then eventually add a guy if you need to at that point. Um, we got a couple more questions here in the mailbag, including we take you behind the curtain with a mailbag question about how we make the show after this. All right. Uh, before we get to our question about how we make the show, Max writes in, “How real is Miami’s interest in LeBron, or is it just the media making it a story?” Um, yes. I think it’s both things, right? I think first of all, there’s no indication right now that the Lakers are taking calls on LeBron, and we just had a report in the Athletic this morning that they anticipate that LeBron will be with the team when they get into training camp. So, that’s that’s take that for whatever it’s worth. But, you know, one of the talks in summer league was what what is going to happen with LeBron? So, I do think it’s mostly speculation because there has been no trade request, right? Like he is not on the trade block and the Lakers are in have no obligation to trade him right now. Um, but that doesn’t mean that that speculation is wrong because after LeBron’s statement, it makes sense to speculate. Yeah, I I uh I kind of see it the same way. like uh there there’s enough there to say, you know what, maybe he’s unhappy. And and a lot of I don’t think they’re reaching for it, too. I know a lot of people tend to be a little bit skeptical, especially in today’s political climate, regarding media and whether or not they’re shifting narratives or creating stories or something like that. I I think LeBron might have has voiced a legitimate concern about the development of the Lakers roster and his plans or his future in that organization. And so I I don’t think it’s necessarily a reach to say he’s unhappy, but that doesn’t mean the Lakers have to do anything about it. So they could just be, oh well, he’s unhappy, but that’s okay. We we know whose team this is moving forward. And while we would want a fully engaged and happy LeBron, I don’t think they’re necessarily all that concerned about it either. So it’s not it’s not like they’re just manufacturing a story here for the sake of doing so. I I think I don’t think that’s the case even with LeBron because if there’s one player in the league who truly controls his own destiny, it’s him. Like he’s not going to get traded to anywhere he does not want to get traded in. He has that kind of power. He’s and he has a no trade clause. Yes, he is the only untradable player in this league. Everybody else, they’re kind of open for business. And you know, we talk about that all the time being a business and players accept that. As much as we want to believe in loyalty around the league, that does not exist from the player side or the team side. And so, um, I think LeBron can shape his future however he wants it to. So, and he’s an expiring contract right now, so he can also be a free agent next summer. And the Lakers are not offering him the extension. So, he will be a free agent next summer, more likely than not. And so, um, LeBron’s future is a legitimate question. And if you’re a fan base around the league wondering what LeBron’s future looks like, well then and you might want LeBron on your roster, then you’re going to speculate. What’s really interesting to me about this whole thing now is that if teams like Miami and New York and Cleveland or whatever, whatever teams that you could talk yourself into trading for LeBron, they were not prepared for LeBron James to be available this summer. That wasn’t really a thing on their radar. Right now they are. Now, we have a few months up until the trade deadline perhaps or or certainly into next summer for teams that might be want might want to get in on the LeBron James business to prepare to get in on the LeBron James business and we’ve already seen how Miami has done that once before. Um, if you want more on the LeBron James thing, we did a whole podcast on it this week, though. In a way, isn’t Miami perhaps a little bit more fully prepared because they did have something similar in the works and Kevin Durant, although they were kind of maybe not necessarily as fully engaged in that pursuit as uh we might have believed they were. I think they’re kind of one step up in terms of being able to shift. It’s not like you can just white out KD’s name and fill in LeBron James at the same time. But I think yeah, the salaries are really close. Like you could almost offer the same package. Not only that, but if LeBron just becomes a free agent next summer, Miami is in a unique position to have a ton of cap space next summer where you look at teams like the Lakers and the Clippers, they’re positioning themselves for the summer of 2027 where Miami is already going to be positioned for the summer of 2026. So, they are in a unique position. I don’t I I I don’t want to go so far down this thing as to lead our fans to believe that LeBron is coming to Miami, but I also don’t think it’s a nonzero chance either, you know. Right. Right. So yeah, I think to the to the answer this two things. I would love to see like a PowerPoint presentation like really old school PowerPoint presentation with the KD’s name like strike through and then just LeBron written over it or something like that like in terms of their free agency. Well, wait, isn’t that what who didn’t uh Nike do that with Steph basically in their pitch to him and the sneaker company and then that’s why he ended up at Under Armour. They basically just re repurposed an old PowerPoint and they left somebody’s name on it. I think I have that right. Oh my god, that would be a terrible And Nico Harrison was in charco Harrison was running that meeting. That’s like the lore of Nico Harrison when he was a Nike exec. What was the other thing you were going to say? You said two things. What was the other thing? I I can’t even recall now. That one just kind of erased everything else that was important. Uh last question here comes from Yoli. How do you guys come up with daily topics on the team? Is there a time where you really just have to pull from thin air? Um well for sometimes we just make you guys prepare the show and that’s why we do mailbags but um it you know what in the off season not going to lie it can be difficult sometimes. Uh but that’s that’s the beauty of the NBA is there always seems to be something going on but yeah I think that there there is a point where this does become a job and you figure out okay like you really got to sit down and figure out how are we going to how are we going to talk about the Heat for 30 minutes. Yeah, I I think that’s and I will give credit where it’s due. You’re much better at that. That’s that’s than I am. Um finding loose ends or just saying, you know what, that’s a thing going on somewhere that’s peripherilally involved with basketball. Let’s extend it to kind of shift it to become a heat topic. So, um that that’s kind of how that works in some cases. And look, we’ve been guilty in the past of saying what’s a cultural phenomenon that’s kind of like has everybody uh you know occupied or what’s what’s the kind of water cooler conversations that people are having and how can we make it a topic about the heat. So we’ve done shows in the past. Coming up next, our Love Island locked on heat episode. Yeah. And thanks to my my uh heavy involvement in all things geek, I I think we’ve done like Game of Thrones of Marvel’s Avengers kind of thing. Like we’ve done lots of different crossovers. We did a Star Wars related question if I recall correctly. Do something like that. Love the fact I love the fact that one of our listeners took one of one of the things that we talked about and superimposed UD’s face on Yoda and it worked so perfectly and then Tyler Herro’s face on Luke Skywalker as he was carrying him through this through Daba and Empire Strikes Back. That was that was wonderful and and uh we I don’t know even know what the topic of conversation was, but we stretched that one out pretty well. when you start talking about the planets and the Star Wars universe is when I start checking out. Um, yeah, thanks for making I saw your eyes glazing over there for a second. I I know Love Island uh villas more than I know Star Wars planets unfortunately. 1. I really like the idea of getting Jalen Smith from Chicago. 6'10, stretch big, lottery pick. And barely gets minutes in Chicago. You talked about Vooch and Collins but I like Smith tbh. Solid option. I also really like Ayo Dosunmu. Can play the 1, 2 or 3. Solid defender, solid ball handler and friendly expiring contract.

  2. lol, Spo’s offense are practically almost in the bottom 1/3. He’ll even with the Big 3 he had them outside the Top 10 twice.

This team will still be a bottom 1/3 offense and NPowell won’t average 21 ppg like he did in LAC.

    Tigers don’t change stripes

  3. Why not get Lillard? That’s what separates us from The Celtics. They are actually trying to win if they get Lillard they are a lock favorite in the East for the next 3 Years after this next one

  4. David, do you just not care that you pronounce Kalel incorrectly? You are a heat podcaster, you have to say it correctly…

  5. I think we're over hyping the Norman Powell pickup. No discredit to him. He's a fine player wo will make a difference. I just don't see a high-powered offense like some are speculating…

  6. They are a good offense, but we still dont have a player who can create off the dribble. No one to get inside the paint consistently with dribble drive penetration. So long as we don't have that, defenses will be able to make it hard for us to score.
