Atlanta Hawks Sign Caleb Houstan To A 1-Year Deal

Yo, what’s going on guys? Shout out my boy Michael Scott out hoop. You guys know I work at Hoopite. He, you know, scooped up this news. Caleb Houston signing with the Atlanta Hawks. Spent the last couple years with the Orlando Magic. Three years there. 168 games. He averaged 14 and a half minutes, four points, one half rebounds a game. This past year, basically, he’s like been someone who’s not really he’s been at the bottom of the rotation and playing about 50 or so games a year. this past year 58 year before that 59 51 started 23 games so far in his career and he’s a guy who shoots three three-pointers a night about 37% for the career 40% this past season 42% from the field this past year 3.3 field goal attempts a game averaging as we said earlier about four points a night and if you’re wondering oh what are the per 36 numbers again it would only make him like an 11 point per game scorer about four rebounds a night one and a half assists and Caleb Houston fitting into this rotation. I I wonder if this is going to be a a partially or a non-G guaranteed deal or if it’s fully guaranteed due to the fact that it’s a one-year deal. I think it’s a perfect fit for a team that needs someone who’s he’s a combo forward who’s 6’8 with a near 7 foot wingspan. He can play he competes on both ends of the floor, but the big thing him is he can shoot over anybody. He’s got that movement offball shooting ability and I think he brings some decent energy. And if we’re gonna talk Atlanta Hawks rotation right now is that I think they’ve done a good job putting together the expected squads or the expected depth chart where we talked about this Trey Young D you know I almost said Dash Daniels Dyson Daniels Nikquil Alexander Walker Jaylen Johnson Christoff Porzingis Onako Congu they have Mo Gay Zachary Reese Luke Canard Verachche Kobe Buffkin Nicole Dusich now Caleb Houston, Asa Newuel, they have Elie. Is it Eli or Elie? It’s Eli, right? And I Jacob Toppin was there. So, they were starting to round out their bench with Nicole Jic and Caleb Houston as a Asa Newell. Jesus Christ, couldn’t speak right there. Austin Newell, guys, I’m butchering everything today. And so Buffkin, Noel, Nola, Caleb round out the 14th spot. And if they keep Eli and Jacob Tophin, which those are going to be their two A’s, they have maybe one more roster spot that they could fill. I wonder who LB, but I actually really like that getting themselves a guy in Caleb Houston, which is a sneaky. He’s really good behind Jaylen Johnson and Zachary Shashet. Killer Houston being like the third forward there. You guys want to hear something really embarrassing? I got really drunk the other night at Las Vegas and I bumped into Dyson Daniels, Nikil Alexander Walker. Oh my god. Made a fool of myself. Just don’t even want to talk about it that much. But yeah, this is why we don’t drink kids either way. And so to me, I think having guys where you have a 24 point per game score in Trey Young, a 14 point per game score in Dyson Daniels, who’s a defensive dog, another 10-point per game scorer in Nil Alexander Walker, who can also be a secondary playmaker and a defender, 20 20 and 10 guy, Jaylen Johnson, another 20 and 10 and rim protector and Christoff Porzingis, a 13-10 guy in Nekioongu coming off the bench. Zachary Rishe was like averaging 18 points a night. Loved how he finished the years. Vic cre and like is another person that I really like. Luke Canar being a 10-point per game scorer who’s an underrated secondary playmaker who can score shoot threes at like a high clip. This is a deep team that if you’re not following along. I think you guys might be sleeping on the Atlanta Hawks. I’ve already said it. the Atlanta Hawks. Maybe I’m a bit excited because I love Quinn Snyder and I think Anie Salah is doing a really good job here. I I feel like they’re also going to get Gary Peyton the second. I’m not gonna like I just have this feeling that what a perfect guy he would be for this team because they have technically one more roster spot to fill out and one might say that could be a guard cuz they technically have three like ball ending guards and Vic Cree and Mr. Kobe Buffkin and Trey Young and Dyson Daniels but with Mr. Gary Payeyton, you have another guard and a defensive guy. But not just that, I think having now Caleb Houston right here who, let’s just bring back why Caleb fits here. You’re taking us first off, if it worse comes worse, he’s a reserve who plays 10 to 12 minutes a night like he did for the Orlando Magic. Shoots the ball, shoots three threes a night, can rebound. But you’re getting a guy who’s still a promising shooter who has the ability and willingness to fill a role and do a little bit of the little things that I think a team like the Hawks want and leaves room for, you know, hope that he’s going to grow into a bigger role on this team. He’s already shown that he’s a floor spacing combo forward who can play the four or the three. Yeah, he’s had hasn’t had the most flashes, but I think he’s shown that having what, four points, four rebounds, four points, three rebounds, just under an assist, and 12 minutes a night isn’t terrible. It’s actually decent. And he was one of those guys who coming out was playing with Kate Cunningham, Scotty Barnes, Jaylen Duran, these other top recruits. So at 6A with like a 215 frame with a 7 foot wingspan, he’s a combo forward who shown that he can be a floor spacer who is able to set his feet, make shots, has a little bit of an off the dribble game where he can shoot and he’ll hit the open pass. He’s able to cut and he’s able to defend. Like he’s disciplined. He’s got decent technique. It’s not going to be someone rangy, but his ability to catch and shoot is going to be valuable. And if there’s injuries or something, he seems like he can really play the same roles as Zachary Reese or Jaylen Johnson. And I really like that is you don’t have to score off the dribble, but he’s able to do his things, which is being someone who can just catch and, you know, shoot and or just shoot off the dribble and just being a tall guy who can be a floor spacer and defend. And he brings some decent, you know, energy on that side. He’s long. He’ll play over he’ll go over screens and he doesn’t like get beat all the time as someone would think. I mean it’s he’s someone that when he closes out on shooters he’s someone who doesn’t get blown by regular regularly. And really the whole thing about him is like oh why is he had more opportunity? A he was buried on like a a team that had multiple players that were ahead of him. John Jonathan Isac, Fron Vagner, just to mention a few, and he just wasn’t getting an opportunity to play there cuz he was a second round pick. So, he’s someone who could really just like pop. Again, he’s al someone, you know, might not make the roster, but I do think he’s a player that worth the swing. It’s a good pickup by Anie Salah. I think he’s someone that’s showing organizationally. He’s just got a really good eye for Talum. I really like this. And I think the reason why we haven’t gotten technically a formal president is they’re they’ve been really blown away by Anie Saw. By the way, Anie Saw is like 6’4. I walked by him the other day. Big dude. Big dude. Really, really was surprised how tall he was. So, I’d like to hear your guys’ thoughts down below in the comment section. What do you want to hear? And let me know. Peace.

The atlanta hawks have signed caleb houstan to a 1-year deal, adding a versatile forward with shooting ability to their roster. Houstan’s skill set and potential make him a promising piece for the Hawks as they build toward future success.

  1. You had the same thought as me lmao. When I first saw Onsi next to Trae I had to do a doubletake. Dude is tall as hell. I thought he might be closer to 6'5-6'6 ngl. He could come into the game himself if he needs to for spot minutes.

But yeah, watching some film of Caleb now as I sort of organize my thought about him. He has some nice relocation 3s in his game that he generates when he moves to 1-2.5 feet behind the line on drives from his teammates. Real range too. Orlando's offensive system (if you can even call it that) is really not set up to show off guys like him. Quin's system and the pace of play that the Hawks run with should open up a lot of opportunities for him. Random fact I learned is that he played with Kobe Bufkin for a year at Michigan, so there could already be some synergy there if they are in some lineups together.

Given the lack of movement in Orlando's system, and his limited minutes and opportunity (13.6 MP and 3.3 FGA attempted, .5 2pa, and 2.8 3pa), it's hard to imagine that the floor won't open up for him in the Hawks offense. Should be able to get to the rim more often in the spacing, as well as provide spacing for others. Cuts will be rewarded, and relocations will be seen more often by the ball handlers compared to his time Orlando (Would have like to see him next to Bane some tho, ngl – I think that would have really helped the magic). Young dude who defends well, and shoots well.

Structurally, I think this makes a lot of sense for both sides. Hawks get his shooting and defense. If he does well, Caleb gets an opportunity to shoot the damn ball after 3 seasons in Orlando where he had to learn to be efficient to see the floor buried behind Franz. 1 year deal to let him reassess the market in a year that maintains flexibility for him and the Hawks to potentially bring him back, or let him go if they want to go in another direction/another opportunity arises for him.

    Solid deal.

  2. Just remember this is bottom of the roster type players. They aren't mean to truly be rotation players are there mostly for garbage time and backups for injured players.

  3. We needed a small forward and we got 1!!!!!!! Very good 3 point shooter + takes away from the Magic! That's addition by subtraction as well!
