Who’s going to develop the most for the Nuggets this season? | DNVR Nuggets Podcast Live

[Music] [Applause] [Music] Get down. [Music] What up, chat? What up? What up, Dine? Eric, Eric in the chat. What’s up, everybody? Welcome into the DVR Nuggets podcast. We are live in the Toyota Lounge on a Thursday. Beautiful days after Colorado. The sun is shining. Vibes are high. Talk about the nuggets. Why not? I’m Harrison Wind with Brendan Vote. What’s up, man? I just realized this is the first time I’ve spoken out loud today. Literally, dude. Sometimes I have that too where I’m on my way into the office and I’m like, does my voice work today? I have not warmed up at all. I haven’t said hey to a human being all day. Harrison, hello. Hello. How are you, man? What have you done today? Not talked, I guess. Not talked. I made breakfast. I did laundry. I did some chores, took the trash out. It was very exciting by myself. Oh man. Like we talk so much for our job that it’s kind of nice just to not talk when I’m not in the office. Yeah. I I no longer enjoy the sound of my own voice. Like a lot of times I’ll be at home and my my wife is like, “You haven’t said a word all night.” I’m like, “Yeah, I just talked for like on three different shows today.” Yeah. And when you’re alone, I I guess if you live alone Yeah. Yeah. That’s another thing. You don’t talk to anyone, right? Underrated element of that. But it’s nice. It’s good to know my voice still works. Um, got a lot on the docket for today’s show. A bunch of offseason notes. There’s a new nugget who has joined the uh contingent in Vegas. I don’t know if you saw that. Joker’s abroad in China. I want to show a video from that as well. Is this a buyout pickup for the summer league roster or normal player? Okay. Yeah, normal player. And uh we got a lot of mailbag questions as well. If we have time, we’ll get into Bleach Report’s top 100 rankings of all time NBA players. They left me off again. That’s a great piece of offseason content, man. You know, like that’s a big project to do, man. But if you drop a top 100, you’re going to get a lot of reaction about it. If you do drop a top 100 of all time, that’s pretty good, too. You’ve given us some some some food for thought. I thought I would come in at least somewhere in the 100 to 95 range. I did not. So, back to the gym for me. More work to do. Yeah, you’re not going to top uh Havoc. I did notice Chanty Bilips is ahead of Jason Tatum. Just throwing that out there. I love that. I love that, too. I absolutely love that. But we’ll save that for when we get to it. Um let’s start with some news and notes. Nicole Joic is in China and that if anybody is listening to this show, if anybody is watching the show that went to the meetup of Joker in China, I want to hear from you. So DM DM one of us or the Nuggets account. But he’s in China right now for his promotional, you know, shoe tour. And a lot of athletes have done this in the past. Most notably, James Harden, who goes to China every year. That’s right. That’s where he once called Daryl my a liar. He did that uh a year ago around this time. What a treat. It’s only been a year, huh? I think so, right? Maybe two now. No, two years. I think two now. I think two now. Who’s to say? Time certainly flies. But crazy crowds, mobs of people. Joker I I mean when you see him in this light, you’re like, “Okay, he’s kind of taken the leap to super mainstream. I’m in commercial.” You’re right. I’m doing the promotional shoe tour type thing. Like look at these crowd. Like this is James Harden from two years ago. Not to start a whole hashtag dialogue here, Harrison, but this is some face of the league behavior. This is this is a staple of I think if you’re a true NBA superstar, you make the China trip and tons of NBA fans there like you just do it and they lose their minds to see them and and Jokic being there getting the love. I saw a lot of horse stuff going on. I think there’s a guy in a horse costume. We just saw him pass camera briefly. I’m taking that uh out for Halloween next year. You know what this reminded me of? Harrison, what’s up? Superstar Dev walking through Belgrade. Yeah, similar. Not that different. Yeah, not that. Both ready to build statues for our guys. Yeah. Good for Joic, though. Very not the kind of thing you associate with Joic. When Joic goes away in the off season, he’s either hooping for team Serbia. Yep. Or he is on the river and we will see him later. But a nice little glimpse into some some superstar movement for our boy. What’s interesting is I think we’re going to see a lot of Joker this summer um in China obviously for for this thing. I’m sure he’ll have a couple viral moments. They usually play a game or something or some one-on-one game with, you know, some some guy over there. We’ll probably get that. I think he’ll probably play in Eurob Basket later this summer as well. We’re going to get that, too, in about a month. So, there’s going to be more Joker this summer than normal. And thank God I need it. So, I’m I’m excited for that. And then the obvious detail as well, Harrison, which is the China connection with his signature shoes. Yeah. Which, you know, Joic is an international superstar, and I mean that in the NBA context, which is not to say like I think he’s more of a superstar overseas even than he is in the United States of America. Maybe maybe I’m overstating that. That’s my sort of anecdotal read on it. And but but you know, making himself a star there, that’s essential. Someone said, “How do they get him to do the tour?” It probably is a part of his marketing contractual obligations for 361. Yeah, a bag. But cool to see, man. And cool to see him getting all that love from the fans. Very creative with it. I I kind of love Joker being with 361. I do, too. I I love him ditching Nike for like I’m not just a offshoot shoe company because I love the marketing they’ve done around it. I love kind of the story they’ve been able to tell around it. And it actually seems like they put effort into it and thought and the shoes are actually cool. Like I kind of love the Joker shoes. There’s like all these cool different colorways. Some of them have cool names. He made one for Mirros, of course. And I just I just like the vibe of it, man. I I like Joker being with with 361. Really quickly, I’m glad our commenter finally got got Kale today so he can let him know how he feels. Guy’s a big Kale fan. Yeah, he’s been trying to get this comment in for days. A little uh a little taken back. I’m very rarely someone’s favorite on the show. We were saying you missed it yesterday. He tried to tell you. I was like, Kale’s not even here for the most ausive love he’s ever received. For sure. Back to Yoke. I I think, you know, there’s something about the way Jokic being a Denver Nugget fit to me. Yeah. That I feel similarly about. And I know it’s a brand deal, so let me not overstate it, but it just seems a little right. like, “Oh, the powers that be over here are a little late to recognize what’s going on.” Yep. Go get your bag elsewhere. Yeah. Another note on uh Nugget star players, Jamal Murray’s joined the Nuggets in Vegas. I don’t know if you saw this today, the Nuggets account tweeted out a photo at, you know, I talked on the show the other day how there’s pretty much organized practices um at summer league because there’s so many Nuggets players down there. They got all their coaches there. these guys get in the gym and really practice. Yeah, Murray’s out there now. He He’s joined the team there. And there was even a uh Instagram live video of him in Denver last night on the practice court. He’s in Vegas this morning. You know what year was it, Harrison? We have seen him with practicing with the Vegas squad. He’s usually out there. He makes this trip a lot. Yeah, cuz Jamal will be around in the summer. I mean, he’ll go home. I think I’m not super familiar with his with his itinerary. I think Jamal is one of the guys who stays in Denver the most out of the normal roster players. So, he’ll get this gym work in a lot. I’m not going to, you know, I don’t know if it’s a whole Jamal’s working harder than ever before thing. I think Jamal will do this. He’ll show up and he’ll play with these guys. I like that. It’s it it’s fun and and I’m sure it’s ch he’s challenging them. And I’m sure it’s I always think about what it’s like as a fringe NBA player, whether it’s two-way, and I shouldn’t no disrespect to two-way players who play in the NBA. I don’t fringes may be rough, but or these guys just trying to work to get a training camp deal. You’re looking for all these kind of surreal look how close you are moments, right? And and Jamal, I think, is able to do both where he shows up. Man, that’s NBA champion Jamal Murray. Also, damn, there are levels to this and we are not there yet. Uh, I know Jamal likes to challenge these guys in like a competitive fun way, and I think it’s cool that he’s there. It’s just a good sign when you have as much of your team as possible out in Vegas. It’s It’s a little thing, but it just shows some chemistry. It It shows some connectivity. I’ll never forget, do you remember the summer after they won the championship when all the guys showed up in Vegas and there was that classic pick of AG looking, you know what, and like KCP was there? It there was No, I don’t know. Say it. I’m going to make you say he looked high as [ __ ] Okay. And like there was just this glow that everybody had. I do remember they were all on the court at Cox Pavilion, of course. And um it at that moment that’s when we were all like, “Oh, they’re going back to back.” I mean, look at this team. Obviously, they didn’t, but they’ve had a good contingent out there. I love Cam Johnson who has a press conference tomorrow in Denver. I love Tim Hardaway being out there, the new assistants, and and Jamal being out there is is a good sign. I think I think all this stuff, them being together, it doesn’t win you a title. You have to be good enough to win a title, but once you clear that talent threshold, all these little things matter being together early, vibing. It’s my big takeaway from the year they won versus the two years they didn’t, there are other factors at play, but there is a market difference in in the way it once felt to watch these guys come together versus the way it did for a while there. and and hopefully this is a start of a rebirth of the culture that made Denver greater than the sum of their parts. Yeah. And of course he’s in Vegas for summer league. The another Summer League game is tonight. Unfortunately, we’re not doing a postgame show. Um sorry for all the sickos that that will be or we’re going to be tuning into that. I think we should apologize if we did one cuz people would feel like I should go watch that. Dude, the summer league game tonight starts at 9:00 p.m. Denver time. That is insane. I I still can’t get over it. Not to mention that 8 p.m. in Vegas. Not to mention that we’ve reached the stage in summer league where a lot of the headliners have been shut down. Have been shut down. I I actually had some free time finally this week. And I was last night I was going, “Okay, I’m finally going to, you know, dig into some summer league really like see if there’s any other two-way prospects that the Nuggets could pick up outside their roster. Really going to lock in on some games. All the good players aren’t playing anymore. You are too late, my friend. It’s too late. I missed my window. Unless if Rain Smith is playing tonight, I’ll see you. I’m I’m starting to think this guy doesn’t exist. I’ll see you there. He’s on the roster. He’s the one where you saw a video and you went, “Bro, how tall is that one guy?” There’s clearly someone who knows Rain Smith that’s watching our show on all of our postgames cuz every postgame show he comments. He’s like, “Yo, what the hell is up with the Nuggets? Why is Rain Smith not playing?” And he will just ask it over and over and over again. Make it rain. Why not? It’s not like they’ve got a lot going for the summer league team right now. This is also a thing. These guys sign up to play summer league. Rain Smith, good player in college. Yeah. Like kind of a bucket at Louisville. Yeah. And I think that’s where I went. Louisville. Yeah. Transfer there. Yep. And they signed to play summer league and they just don’t even play the first three games at all. That’s kind of I feel like summer league they should rotate guys in a little quicker. I don’t know. I sort of feel that way too. I I mean I think I wonder how much organizations are caught in between agendas at summer league. Oh, it’s all an agenda. You’ve got a coach who would like to win. You’ve got a player who’d like to earn a 2-way spot. A returning NBA player who’d like to show you he has more than you think. And it all ends up going in these different directions. Whereas it it does almost feel like, hey, let’s just get everyone some PT here, you know, like what what’s the point of Well, how it goes usually and like people have told me this that work with teams after the draft and you know, in the couple weeks after you’re putting together your summer league team and how it goes is you call guys up and say, “All right, you know, we’re putting together our team. I’ve got a starting point guard role open.” And then that player is weighing that offer against another team that says we’ve only got a six-man role open. And so your top I’m gonna say your top seven guys or so are all guys that you got kind of quote unquote promising a role in playing time. It’s so agenda driven. It’s ridiculous. So true. Imagine that you get a fun little head coaching gig at summer league and it’s like by the way all these guys who aren’t going to make the roster, we owe them something. You owe them playing time. Welcome to the NBA. They enjoy it. Yeah. I got to play Beakman. Yeah. 25 a game. And listen, I I think our viewers know that stuff happens at the NBA level as well. Of course, it sure does. Yeah. So, final summer league game tonight. Is there anything else you want to see? We’ve seen three games of Don. We’ve seen uh Spencer Jones play three games. I kind of wonder if Hunter Tyson and Spencer Jones switch tonight. Where Hunter Tyson plays, Spencer Jones sits out. Is Hunter going to play tonight? I don’t know. Maybe I would wonder if he if he Yeah, at a certain point there’s more to lose than gain with the injuries. So, my sort of annoying answer off the top is I’d like to see everyone get out of there healthy. Not kidding at all. I would like to watch Re Smith play. Tiny King who can shoot a lot. So, like what is there to lose? Another summer league game. Yeah, honestly, it’s Tamar Bates or nothing for me at this point. I’m kind of with you. Like I really don’t have that much invested in anybody else. EJ Liddell I’ve kind of sold a little stock on in terms of the final two-way spot for him. But Tamar Bates, the guy under contract, I’m He’s the one guy I’ve got my eyes on. I’m with you. Let’s hit a break. Uh on the other side, let’s go to the mailbag. We got a lot of good questions and I’m going to throw it to Kale to just choose what question we answer for us because that’s that’s the kind of power I like to give him on this show. Superstar Kale, super producer Kale. Okay. What is right now a realistic Denver money space for Christian Brown’s extension to keep him happy and satisfied on the team for an additional 3 to four years? Can they afford to pay him 20 million plus per season? I think you can pay him 20. Yeah, 30 seems a bit much to me. I mean, look, it has to be stated every time. Cap continues to go up, albeit by I think a slightly smaller number than people expected this most recent time around. But the cap does keep going up. Uh they can afford I think 20. I think I think Christian is a 20. I I don’t know. But I think when you get closer to 30 to me it just seems like maybe you’d be bidding against yourself. I that’s no shot at Christian Brown who I think provides a lot of utility to this to this team. But I just don’t know if he’s a guy who, you know, if you sent him to restricted free agency, which you don’t want to have to do, would he be getting a more enticing offer? I don’t know. I don’t know if he would. He definitely wouldn’t. I mean, restricted free agency seems like just a a barren place where you don’t want to be. Yeah. Is that a dying part of the free agency period? It kind of seems that way. It it is because bad for both teams and players cuz it like if you look at it ties up all your caps. If you look at the Josh Giddy situation, he has no leverage and the Bulls kind of got screwed out of participating in free agency this year. Yeah, you can’t really do anything in free agency if you have a restricted free agent, right? Cuz you’re just you have to bank that cap room for when they sign. But restricted free agency has been so bad cuz nobody has cap room. The Nets were the only team with real cap room this summer and they used it. Yeah, they used it on a bunch of different deals. And next season, there is talk that there are going to be more teams with cap room, definitely more than this year. But just with the direction the CBA is going, man, I’ll believe it when I see it. I just don’t think free agency is going to be a real cap space play under this CBA with just where the league is right now. Teams aren’t really letting guys get away. Yeah. And teams don’t really have the cap space to improve their team in free agency, right? It’s like an exception or minimum market now, right? And Denver has to get that stuff right, which they did in 2023 for the most part. I think arguably on paper, especially with the if the big vow situation, the dust settles there, I think they’ve done a better job of that this time around than maybe ever before. Uh, you know, like look, Tim Hardaway and Bruce Brown are players who have exhausted certain spa fan bases. Yeah. Players who have had dips and and rises in their value, but they’re good players on a minimum, right? And there’s a there’s an NBA market that we’ve seen not too long ago that in theory would have gotten those guys paid. Shoot just happened to Bruce Brown. So it is interesting to see. I think I think there’s maybe more wisdom than ever in seeing like forget using your cash base to go get Dennis Schroeder. You don’t know who’s going to be available on a minimum. Yeah. At the end of free agency. It’s just I it’s going to have to take some kind of pivot for summer to be about cap space again. Like I just don’t see it being about that in this current climate. The really only two ways to improve your team right now are the draft and trades. That’s really it. Free agency isn’t really a way you can make massive improvements to your team. You can make smaller ones like the Nuggets did, but you can’t really make absolutely, you know, earthshattering moves. Yeah. In terms of Christian Brown, I think the extension number is probably going to alarm people. Like the sticker shock of it will probably be a lot. Like if it’s 25, right? That’s going to pop off the off the screen. Four years 100 mil. 25 I think would be a great deal for Christian Brown. 25 mil a year about like he and his agent should feel phenomenal about that. You mean or I think the Nuggets should feel phenomenal. Oh, okay. All right. All right. and maybe him and his agent. Yeah. Um, so I I could see it coming in around there, like average of 25 mil a year. That’d probably be around what it is. And look, look, I think we all know this. You know, Christian Brown, everybody is a little bit of a Jokic merchant. They just are. Christian Brown would not be this type of player, not in Denver, I don’t think, at least. And that that is something you have to bake into your negotiations a little bit. But that being said, Christian Brown is just definitely the type of player you want to keep longterm around Jokic. You got off the threeax contract kind of ring around that you were going through. Should make it that much easier to you have a little more maneuverability right now. That trade I think allows Denver to just really just get this deal done this summer. and I expect it to get done. And I I just think you want Christian around. He’s exactly the type of player you want in your organization. So, I’d say, you know, 25ish. Yeah. First of all, to be clear, like I want Christian to stay and feel happy here. I think he’s a good fit in that lineup. I I I you know, I sort of wonder as you enter the era of kind of doing what needs to be done starting with that Porter trade there, which obviously is a great trade that fell into their last, they’d be foolish not to. This is the sort of get greedy around Yokera. Mhm. I think we saw some version of the brightest or brighter timeline play out like now you got to do what you do. I just wonder if that if you have to if you play hard ball with Christian a little bit in a way where maybe 5 years ago when you were on the way up it’s let’s pay everyone what they want early make sure they’re happy. You know I wonder if there’s wisdom in kind of being a little more cutthroat. And that’s not like I hope Christian on indiv Christian gets paid is happy. He deserves that and has earned it. I’m just thinking about Denver’s perspective. Yeah, for sure. Um, all right, let’s move on. What else we got? Kind of a fun one. Could we see the return of the Long Boys lineup with Jokic, Big Val, Gordon, Cam, and Peewatt, or should we? I don’t love that lineup, but you can get longer. like Ben last year. Oh yeah, for sure. Do you think we’ll see Jokic and Big Vow together? There was a quote. Was it um was it Ben Tenzer? Was it Adelman? Somebody said, “Yeah, he can play alongside Y.” No, it was Shams. It was Shams in the tweet. It It was around when they traded for Valenunis. Shams had a tweet that said, “Yep, this something like, you know, this bolsters the Nuggets front court, gives the Nuggets a great backup to Joic and somebody who can play, you know, both with the bench and alongside Joic.” And with Sham’s tweets, you know, he’s not thinking of that analysis on his own. Yeah, somebody is telling him that. Send him a little text. It’s either uh Val’s agent, who is very connected with the Nuggets, we know that he reps almost everybody on this team, or it’s the Nuggets. interesting. I would think it’s his agent, which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s untrue, but I mean the headline on how all this stuff is sold and perception and all that, that’s the reason why the agents work so hard to get that framing in. Even though most of us who have sort of done any version of this fandom long enough have figured out how to look past that stuff and still how it’s packaged and sold. You know, maybe there was some talk of it. Obviously, more teams in the West are doing it. We know Big Val probably to some extent still wants a large role. Mhm. I don’t know if it’s a huge part of Denver’s identity. Like, I don’t know if Denver has to do that. You could try it though. I you could try it and and and maybe you know especially if there if there are relative struggles with Payton Watson or Deron Holmes or Zeke Naji and and you’re you’re trying to change things up, get Aaron Gordon some rest, you know, maybe it’s a fun look to throw out there. I’m not I’m not inherently opposed to it, but I do remember the last time Denver tried any version of this in a different league with a different roster. It did not work. You’re talking about Balkan Buddy Ball. Balkcon Buddy Ball. I’m going way back to be. You can run Balk and Buddy Ball back right this year, man. Run it back. It worked so well last time. So, yeah, I’m not super eager to see it, but I suppose you could try it and and you know, maybe it’s one thing to keep an eye on if David Adelman is indeed willing to get innovative and creative here. Here’s something I’ve been thinking about. Do you remember that quote Jokic had late in the season or maybe midway point to late in the season when uh the Nuggets were mixing up their lineups maybe a little bit more and somebody asked him about playing, you know, with different guys and he said, “I love to mix it up.” Mhm. Like I would love to play with bench guys. I think it keeps things interesting. Yep. I think that’s 100% honest from Joic. I think he’d love to mix up the lineups a little bit more and I wonder if David Adam does. Yeah, maybe I think he might I think Jokic enjoys something we didn’t see a lot of from Malone and something that with enough looks might make Jokic actually frustrated but which is helping them in the developmental minutes and you know there’s so this in our interview to us we they we this is Vlaco speaking we throw these guys out there together as like one big bench unit and of course they’re going to struggle get some guys some minutes with Joic cuz that’s what it’s really like to be a nugget. That’s a great point. And and so I wonder if if there’s not just a okay, let’s get Strawther and Payton on the floor more. Let’s get Strawther and Payton on the floor with 15, especially cuz there are more pieces than ever to try to keep this stuff afloat. Uh when it’s not just Jokic playing Hercules, you know, we’re doing our uh our whatifs this week at DNVR. We we did our whole Nuggets What If show with Jeff Morton. That was a great great watch and listen. Go back and watch that if you haven’t. But I was thinking about on my drive-in just some other random whatifs. What if Yousef Nerkach doesn’t get hurt in 2016? Because if you remember, he gets hurt and then to start that next season, uh, he’s not available, right? And that kind of streamlines Joic. No, it was his rookie year he got hurt and then Joic slid into Nerk’s spot for a while, but then at the start of the next season, Nerk was healthy and Nerk became the starter again and then they tried to play them together and then Joic asked to be moved back to the bench. Yeah. If Nerk doesn’t get hurt, is does he just like take the momentum he had his first year here and keep going? Maybe. Maybe Yoke is just glued glued to the bench. I don’t know. I still think Yokic is so in his Yokic’s talent will wit out. It would out. He’s inevitable. So, at some point, but does it delay it at all? That’s an interesting question. It might delay it. Um, yeah. Fun exercise. All right. Do you guys want the next one? Yeah, let’s do the next one. All right. Are from Justin Mills. Are we witnessing the most underappreciated prime of an all-time great in Nug in NBA history? I think it’s starting to get properly appreciated. He was ranked as the 17th best player of all time. Of all time. I think it will probably always feel a little to us underappreciated because we’ve watched it enough that I think most Nuggets fans put him closer to MJ and Braun than you know they do guys 20 through 30 on that list. Oh, Joic to me is the greatest player of all time. Like that that’s what I will tell my kids and tell everybody. I’ve never seen a better basketball player than Nicole Joic and I never will. And he’s a nugget and he and he’s bulan and he’s not as flashy in his personality as Luca. So there are myriad reasons why he’s not going to sort of be the cultural king of the world the way other great players of the NBA have been of the American culture, I should say. But I I I think at large people are like Jurgic is getting benefits of the doubt now when he’s when he exits early in the playoffs as he should and I just think people are just catching up to the idea that what an amazing all-time legendary year SGA just had. I still think the average NBA fan would tell you Jokic is the best player alive. I think the only frustrating part for me is people are appreciating it now in retrospect versus the last 5 years we all knew what we were watching as it was happening. That is true. But I think I do I do think the general sentiment has has changed. Not maybe not enough, but certainly different. Yeah. I think it’s always going to feel that way to us a little bit because that’s what it was at the beginning and we we’re not going to let go of that, right? Cool. Let’s not let go of it. Um but yeah, I do feel like people are appreciating it more and more and we’re getting there. We’re definitely getting there. Agreed. Let’s hit another break. We’ll hit some more mailbag questions on the other side. A lot more to go over. I I peeped the mailbag questions. They’re great. So, uh, we’re going to keep those rolling after this. DMVr Nuggets podcast going through the mailbag. Final Nugget summer league game is tonight. Do you even know who they’re playing? I should probably know this. I think it’s the Clippers. I actually don’t. The Clippers. Maybe Bradley Beal will show up in Thomas and Max Center. In Thomas and Max Center. I cannot believe they’re getting a showcase game at 9:00 p.m. Not much of a showcase game, actually. I heard actually they’re not even supplying refs for this game. You got to call your own fouls. It’s so late. The refs can’t work overtime like that. No, no water boys either. They can’t work outside of the the normal working hours. Boo boo is like, “Hey, Hunter, grab me a Gatorade.” Yeah, the lights are going to turn off at halftime. Um, all right, let’s go back to the mailbag. All right, let’s hop into Conspiracy Corner for a sec, guys, and do what everybody wants to talk about. Do you think the Nuggets are setting the groundwork to make a play for Luca next year? Hm. Are they laying the groundwork? No, I don’t think so. I don’t think anything they’ve done other than get Luca’s assistant coaches, get Luca’s former teammate. They did do that though. Have Luca’s one of Luca’s best friends as your franchise superstar. Huh. Be just the perfect fax simile to a European city in Denver. I mean, JJ Berea, Luca did call JJ Berea a mentor last summer. Oh, did he? Look, if if they had kept if they had kept, I would say this thing is in full swing. Actually, that’s a great point. Or maybe maybe just maybe now is going from the Nuggets just and fulltime locking in on recruiting Luca. And the Nuggets couldn’t have him doing that while in a Nuggets uniform. That would have been tampering. Now that he’s off the Nuggets, he can just commit to fully recruiting Luca to Denver. We tried really hard now that he’s a third party. We tried really hard to bait Valco into this. He either didn’t realize what we were saying or he didn’t take the bait. But Vlacco, you can still do the Denver Nuggets and this city one last favor, brother. You sure can. Yeah. Look, man, I I think Luca definitely signs that extension with the Lakers. Definitely. Definitely. Let me ask you this. is definitely 100% or 98%. I’d say definitely is 90%. I’d say 90%. All right. So, most mostly definitely. Yeah. Mostly definitely. We’ll sign the extension. What do you think? I think he is. I think he is most likely to sign the extension. That’s like 60%. I’m going to say I’m I think 90 is the right number. I I will say I think 90 is the right number. My ears are going to start tingling if Luca comes out and says he’s going to wait to sign the extension till next off season because he can get more money. He can because he theoretically can get more money, but if he doesn’t sign it as soon as he’s available, I’m just going to start getting a little curious. Why not? Lakers fans have already done it with Yic. Turn the tide. Turn the tide. I think it’s a pipe dream and I think sometimes pipe dreams are worth holding on to in the back of your mind. Look, I I am now operating under the impression that literally anything could happen in the NBA. Somebody throws a ridiculous trade out. Why are you talking about Giannis to the Nuggets? Why are you talking about Luca to the Nuggets? That would never happen. Well, yeah, it might considering Luca to the Lakers just happened. That trade for me, it opens up discussion about everything because it is all on the table. However minuscule the percent might be, it’s theoretically potentially on the table. I could counter by saying when those types of sort of things happen, they certainly tend to swing in the favor of the Lakers more than the Nuggets historically. I will say this though, was it Brian Winhorse who put it out there that the Lakers are starting to get a little bit anxious about him signing the extension? Did I see that? Brian Winhorse did make that report. How did I not see this? It was It was It was on his podcast. He said the Lakers are privately starting to get worried that Luca is wanting to see how things go this year before he signs his extension. Now, I would want to see how things go, too. No one enjoys salting and stirring plain boiled water more than Brian Windhorse. You know, there may not actually be anything in the pot. Brian Winhorse, my goat, but he likes to throw a little in there. Yeah, my goat. But maybe maybe there’s something to this. Look, man, if I was going to commit, you know, five more years to a city that I just moved to and, you know, in a country that I’m not from, I’ I’d want to wait and see how how things go. New ownership, who knows how that’s going to go. Probably will, but you never know. You know, for some people, LA is the only place. Is is Rob Pelinka going to be here long term? I don’t know. For other people, LA is is the one place they don’t want to be. What I what I will say is Slovenia is a very outdoor culture-based mountainous landlocked country. Denver might feel like home to him. Hey, throw it out there. Why not? Why not? Most of us have these jobs cuz we manifested hard enough and long enough. Why not throw this one out there? I know a lot of the NBA is just talking things into existence. Yeah, it’s literally what Kenneth No is trying to do. I think it’s what what what everyone in Denver did with Jokic. Yeah. And then it happened. And then it happened. As Ryan Rousillo said at that live taping, first fan base to ever get really really annoying about their guy and be 100% right about the entire thing. So true. So true. We We did the same thing everyone else does. We were just right. We were just right about it. So, there’s your difference. Yep. All right. Let’s see what else we got. Okay. All right. Next one coming in from Jack Wilkey. Will the second apron and the league’s new parody lead to a change in the ring culture discussion? So I think yes because just look at the recent run of NBA champions. It’s been a new team every single year for what the last eight years. It’s harder to win a ring now than it’s ever been. I think I think or or or to build a dynasty, right? Well, yeah, that too for sure. Like I think you could argue it’s easier for any one team to just sort of have their year now against the Tide like the Pacers almost did, but getting there, I mean, Boston looked perfectly suited to go right back. They didn’t. And obviously some injuries involved. If if OKC doesn’t get back this next year, I kind of think this whole thing is on this whole re-examination. That might be the big test. Yeah. Where then you go, it’s just not like getting one is is is the is the goal now. Like how easy it was. I’m not saying easy. It’s never easy to win a ring, but winning one in the 80s when it was just Lakers Celtics going back and forth or you know Cavs war like now just seems like such a different landscape man. The talent is way more spread out. You have just way smarter teams. Although it feels like we are going back to the dumb GM era for a a couple franchises, but it it’s just in my opinion way harder to win a ring now than it was even 5 years ago. And under this CBA, I I just think that’s how it’s going to be. You can’t just stock these contendings, these contenders with, you know, these huge salaries. Owners aren’t going to do it. I I think that’s that’s spot on. Even you might see teams win and then owners still decide. Yeah, which maybe already happened in Denver. Got to the finals. Maybe it happened here a little bit with KCP, which whether that worked out in Denver’s favor or not, however you look at it, a little bit of Yeah, that’d be an awfully expensive team to run back though. And you know, the Boston blowing it up was inevitable once Tatum got hurt. I’m not going to pretend like I’m super plugged in nationally, but even I had heard that it was not a secret that they were considering blowing that team up before the injuries. Really? Yeah. Um I mean, I’m not like this is indirect. So, like I don’t want to this is not my report. This I So, just to be fully transparent, conversations I’ve had with other media members long before it happened were like, “Yo, keep an eye on Boston. Like, after that sale, they may Oh, the sale. Yeah, the sale. The sale.” That’s what I mean. So because like under that even if they had one Harrison this might still be coming. Gotcha. Because under a normal CBA I’ll say under a normal CBA the last CBA Tatum goes out for the year with an Achilles they don’t blow it up like they have right you you keep running it back. But now in this current climate that happens Hallebertton out you just tear it down which is crazy. and Boston. Well, it’s because the penalties for the repeater tax are so terrible that if you’re wasting a year and you can jump under the tax, you need to do it. You also now have a um a rationale that’s easier to sell sell to the fan base whether you’re lying or not, which is man, second apron, not it’s a hard cap. Not a ton of flexibility, right? Seems treating it like a hard cap. here are the basketball reasons why we’ll stay under when maybe they just didn’t want to go over to begin with. But so I think all of these things are going to kind of swirl in as factors. Yeah. Yeah. I agree with Zach Low. He’s been saying for a while that we need to just start calling it a hard cap because that’s how it’s being treated. Yeah. Owners don’t want to go into it. I think there are some correct reasons why you don’t want to, but it’s also convenient at the same time. I would simply start pointing to like if I were trying to sell something sell getting back under the second apron I’d be like look at Phoenix man they were in a rush to get over that apron how did that go there are a lot of when you have Isaiah Thomas as your shadow GM that’s might be what happens again though it’s an argument you can make you see uh Brad Beal’s goodbye post with him with the deuces and did you see the comments under it I did bro if I’m look He had like the most the lowest requirements for a goodbye post. That’s what Bradley Beal did. I’ll I’ll tell you the little post like deuces. I’m out. If I’m a Suns fan, I’m thinking Yeah. Good riddens, buddy. Good riddens, buddy. That’s what they’re all I’ll drive you right to the airport. Yeah. Okay, next one. Yeah. All right. From the Nuggets Lair. Would you ra I think this one’s fun. Would you rather put money on a parlay of the Nuggets, Wolves, Rockets, and Thunder all winning over 53 and a half g games next year or the Suns finding a way to make the playin tournament? Suns playing tournament. Sorry, what’s the first number? 53 and a half. Yeah, for all the Wolves, Rockets, Nuggets, and Thunder. Uh, how many teams won over that last year? Let’s see. Yeah, I’m going to say Sun’s playing because Suns seem real playing destined right now just as it is. Um, the Nuggets only won 150 last year. Minnesota won 49. I don’t I think Minnesota got worse this summer. Yeah, but they might have a better regular season. Maybe like they they were a weird team in that I think they finished the year top 10 in offense and defense. They were only good against the Nuggets. Well, the Nuggets, too, but their clutch numbers were so bad that their record was weird. I that might be something that swings. Maybe it doesn’t. Uh clutch stuff is kind of hard to beat. The Suns were 36 and 46 last year and three games out of the playin. And they lost Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, but they might be around the same level of You’re You’re right though, dude. They already Yeah, maybe it’s the first one. I’m changing my answer. Like I think they’re both extremely unlikely, but I think the Suns are going to be really bad. I going to be bad. I do too. Forget talent of which they’re already kind of devoid. The roster construction makes no sense. I might switch mine too actually. Yeah, I think because the West overall is better, you know, and especially looking at the play Portland is better. San Antonio is better. New Orleans and Utah maybe actually worse somehow, but San Antonio and Portland, two teams that were finished below the Suns last year, are better. So, it might be the first one. Yeah, it might be the first one. It really might. I think Rockets will win more than 53 cuz they won 52 last year. There’s They’re in there young enough with ADOA to be regular season tryards, but now they also have KD. Yeah, I would say they’ll do it. And they have just such a regular season formula, just defense and size. Yeah, I already bought them in the regular season last year. So, yeah. Yeah, I I think the first one. That’s a great question. Yeah, I might go to the first one. Next one. Yeah. Coming in from our guy Harlo. Uh, who takes the biggest development? I think there’s a missing word in here. Leap this year. So, if we’re just I mean, we can really talk about anybody on the roster here. Biggest leap. You know, I was thinking about this earlier and you know, if we’re looking at guys like Christian, Payton, Julian, the younger guys, I wonder if Julian has the most room for a potential leap just out of those three. Um, the reason I don’t think it’s Payton is because he’s kind of buried on the depth chart. Now, Julian kind of has a bit more of a path to rotation minutes with Bruce being maybe some backup point guard in some lineups. Um, but I don’t know. My my actual answer to this might just be Cam Johnson because I wonder if Cam Johnson absolutely blows up this year and people are like we had no idea Cam Johnson was this good and we’re just seeing him next to Joic in the national spotlight. I could see Cam Johnson’s numbers actually being lower than last year’s where he was a top option. But he’s doing everything right and the starting five in the aggregate is maybe even better than last year. Yeah. But I don’t know if that’s going to look like Cam scoring 21 points per game. Um, is it pick it? I think it’s Strawler. I think I’m not saying Strawler’s guaranteed to leap. And in fact, I’m skeptical of one. But if I had to pick one to look significantly better, like what changed about their game? All of their all of their swing skills they they hit on this year or they look marketkedly better. And I would just say Strawler. If Strawler actually becomes a realized shooter, then he is a weapon. 100%. If he’s a 40% shooter, my god, even if he’s a 38% shooter, that is such an absolute weapon. I like this one from Evan in the chat, uh, that says, uh, Cam Johnson will take the biggest leap cuz he’s getting the Jokic bump for the first time. Yeah, he did put up monster numbers last year. Cam Johnson’s numbers last season. Uh, 18.8 points. That’s about what Porter averaged. It was pretty much Mike’s numbers, man. Yeah, but without Yic, without playing alongside in terms of shooting percentages, 47 12, 39, 89, I could see him being even more efficient, but it’s 16 points per game. I think it’ll be more efficient or the same or the exact same. I’m not uh I just don’t know if it’s my point being like there’s a version of Cam working perfectly in Denver that doesn’t blow up into some sort of all-star. You just go that’s the perfect final piece to this starting five. Yeah, if that makes sense. Cam Johnson has also been on just the podcast circuit. He was on another show recently. He was on with KCP actually. I haven’t listened to it, but I saw people talking about it. I will I will say if you talk to guys on the team, uh they refuse to put a ceiling on what how good Christian Brown can be. So, just look out for that, too. I mean, Christian’s a guy, too, where like he’s a foxhole guy. So if you’re if you’re Christian’s teammate and every time you look to your left, you go, “Oh, Christian’s working out again.” You know? Yeah. You go like, “Yeah, you’re like people, why is this guy always in the gym?” Like when So you go like, “What do you think about Christian?” You go, “I trust that guy. I think he’s going to get better.” Why? Cuz he’s a psychopath. That’s why I That’s how I feel about because when Christian is a guy who has a poor playoff performance and then tells the media, “I promise I’ll be better next time.” I usually think I’m taking your word on that. Yeah, you know. Yeah, he backs it up for sure. All right, let’s finish up with a couple more. All right, from Lucas Navarete, do you think a Murray, Tim Hardaway Jr., Cam Johnson, Aaron Gordon, Joic lineup would be viable? I feel like this could be the first time Denver could realistically surround Joic with four credible threats from three. Of course, it’s viable. Yeah, that’s just TH THJ instead of Christian and it’s viable for sure. Yeah, I think people are kind of sleeping on Tim Hardaway Jr. in terms of how much he’s going to play. I’m kind of just penciling him into the rotation every single night. Earlier when they signed him, I was thinking, “Oh, this is a Justin Holiday type of guy. Sometimes he’s in, sometimes he’s out.” But I think Tim Hardaway is good enough. I mean, he played 28 minutes per game last year on a good Pistons team. Guy can be a He started 77 games. Guy can be a good catch and shoot option. Guy can just get hot. I think it’s absolutely an awesome. I think there are going to be a lot of nights where Tim Hardway kind of pisses us off because he takes some crazy shots. Yep. But I think he’s going to play every night. I think he’s your quote unquote seventh man. And I I just think you’re going to be able to put him in a lot of different lineups. kind of how the Nuggets used KCP on offense two years ago. That’s a really good one. You catch him on the right night and you go, “Man, this guy should be playing a lot more.” Catch him on the raw night, you go, okay, I relate to maybe the fan bases when he was, you know, contract is a huge part of it. Tim Hardway got one of the early wave like from about a I guess would have been a maybe eightish years ago now, the cap spike here. Yeah, Tim got very wealthy. Sound crab. Tim got very handsomely paid. Some would argue very overpaid. He’s on a minimum now and so you’re like really looking at his wins over replacement versus some of the bench pieces from last year. From that perspective, I think people will be really pleased with him. Yeah, I think if he was the starting shooting guard, I would probably say like cautiously optimistic knowing that sometimes he drives some people insane. But in this role, I think he’s gonna be great. Yeah, I agree. I I think he’s gonna surprise a lot of people just in terms of how we’re talking about him right now. Yeah, I think it’ll be the opposite. Like his value will start to on this contract playing alongside Jokic. People will go Tim Hardway underrated. Uh Tim Hardaway winning player. Winning player just makes the right plays. I I expect good things from him in this one. I do too, man. He’s going to be great. Okay, next one. Uh from Tommy. What seating playoff performance is the threshold for a successful season next year? Seating. Um top four would be nice. Playoffs. Make the finals. Yeah, make the finals cuz you I already kind of I know this logic is not airtight because you could say the same thing about the Clippers. I I still personally feel like Denver was probably the second best team in the Western Conference playoffs last year. Mhm. And so just losing to the Thunder again still wouldn’t be good enough for me. You went out, you had a a much better off season than you’ve had. Go have a better outcome. Make the finals at least. I think winning it. I think I think winning it. Yeah. But in terms of like a seed, what do you Does it matter what seed they get in your mind in the West? I think you want home court. I don’t I’m not going to stress them finishing with two as opposed to one that that you right. You know what I mean? Yeah. I just think you still want home court, but if they’re not, put it this way. If they’re the four seed instead of the two seed cuz they tinkered a bit, so be it. Yeah. So be it. The Nuggets have this narrative about them going right now where they were the four seed last year, 50 wins, but they pushed the Thunder to seven games and maybe should have won that series. Who knows with, you know, and then Aaron Gordon gets hurt, Michael Porter Jr. with one arm. They did that. Yeah. So, the Nuggets are probably developing a rep as these playoff risers a little bit and and some of that has to do with just how disjointed last regular season was and all the drama behind the scenes and how that leaked over to the team. But now, in my mind, I think the Nuggets, they they are going to have this extra gear in the playoffs. Maybe the Thunder were a good match up for them. I don’t know. But I just after seeing that I I just know in the back of my head they have that in them. You know what I mean? I do know what you mean. Absolutely. They get the right matchups and they’re healthy. I don’t think it’s it’s mental gymnastics to to pick them if the season looks the way we hope it will. Great great point from JK Walrus there in the chat. One of the easiest ways they could sell me on on a further sell me beyond what’s on paper, but what you could show me in the regular season, rip the Wolves throats out a couple times, you know, and then I’m I’m then I’m just beside myself. I’m all in. Yeah, that’d be nice. Especially after that summer league loss. All right, last one. We’ve got a 555ish classic right here. which you go to part two. All right, lock in. All right. Obviously, for the first one, it’s it’s up to you. Uh you could go all the way on the end so that you’re not going to get someone Yeah. to the side of you. I think end is probably the right move cuz you know who’s going to join you eventually. Yeah. Second one, you’re far right, of course. Yeah. Third one, far right again. Yeah. Fourth one, your choice, right? Left or right? Far left or right? Your choice, right? Probably. Yeah. I mean, yeah. Who knows? Fifth, you want far left. Yeah. Sixth, you want far left. We’re easy so far. Seven, you’re dead middle, right? Okay, now we’re tricky. It’s eight. That’s tough. I think you’re going far right. I think you’re right. Far right. Far right. Far right. Avoid the chance you get sandwiched. Yep. Correct. Good call. You go far. But that would be a diabolical move by that other person. It would be, but sometimes people make diabolical moves, man. You can’t trust All you can trust is yourself. All you can trust, you can’t leave fade up to other people in this scenario. Uh, yeah. Then far right. And then I guess far left for the first of the bottom row. Yeah, far left. Bottom row. Left. And then this one is far right or left. Or left. And the next one is far far left. Yeah, that was pretty easy. Pretty easy. All right. We there was a real logic system to this. You guys did a good job. Listen, it’s not our first rodeo. Yeah. I think we’ve mastered this exercise by now. Surprisingly, a lot of people haven’t. Sometimes you’re like, “Man, this was a wild There are a lot of a lot of situations where I’m like, have you ever done this before?” Yeah. You know what’s a really fun place for people to say hello to you and the DNVR bar is the bathroom. Oh, I’ve gone on a rant about this before. Our bathroom is diabolical. It is. And then someone goes, “Hey, it’s vote.” You’re like, “Hey man, I’ll talk to you in four minutes.” Do you guys remember when we had the trough and people would walk up next to you on the trough and try and say, “What’s up?” It was uncomfortable. Remember when I had the trough? When there’s no ice, I couldn’t walk away without evidence of what I had just done. Yeah, I remember. I remember. All right, we got one super chat, guys. Evan Malikowski, shout out, Evan. Have you guys seen Casey P’s pod with Cam? We just mentioned it. comments about MPJ said he was frustrated with Mike and would have to force Mike to stay in the corners. KCP said that. Yeah, we talked about this on this show. I think Mike at this point, someone in Brooklyn should just ask him. He’d probably tell you exactly how he feels. Ask him about anything. He’s got thoughts on a lot of topics. I think Mike wanted to wander from the corners far more than the game plan called for. Most certainly. Yeah, I think Mike, you’re right. We have talked about this. Mike was a good soldier for a long time and I think fit into the Nuggets system and played by, you know, the the rules and structure that Mike Malone outlined as much as he really could given who he is and wants to be as a player. So, you gotta give him credit for that while also saying, “Yeah, he probably wants to explore his game a little bit more.” Yeah. I don’t think a tragic ending for Mike. I think Mike’s excited for what’s to come. Yeah. And I’m kind of excited to see what he can do. Me, too. Or not do. Yeah, that too. Yep. But I’m really excited. Honestly, man, I’m really excited for this Nuggets roster. I am really excited to get different looks, a different iteration of of something we’ve grown so familiar with. And I just think no matter how the season starts, join us on the internet as we go to overtime just for 30 seconds. Um, you know, people will be maybe be willing to to have more benefit of the doubt for poor results because it just felt like, okay, there was at least movement. Something’s different. I’m excited to see how this finishes. Guys, thanks for hanging out with us. Throw us a thumbs up. Enjoy the Nugget summer league game tonight. Maybe we’ll do an emergency podcast if Don Holmes goes for 40. Probably not. Well, we’ll talk to you tomorrow later. [Music] [Applause] We all like the

  1. Saying that Jokic is the greatest ever is kind of ignoring the little insignificant fact that basketball is played on both sides of the court. You could say he might be the best offensive player ever, but definitely not the greatest overall.

  2. If we pay more than 20 million a year for Braun sign and trade them he ain’t worth it no shot creation, passive on offense except near the rim and his defense it just above average

  3. Wind, you should know it would not be Balkan Buddy Ball with Big Val. He’s from Lithuania, a Baltic not Balkan country. So it would be Balkan-Baltic Buddy Ball.
