Sacramento remains undefeated in Vegas 🔥 | The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross
had a soda. I can’t go to bed. I If I’m ready, I’m ready. But um you do it more in the morning as a like you said, kind of that pick me up. Yeah. Yeah. Um I we’re going to be hearing for today and tomorrow your British Open updates. How badly do you want like Scotty Sheffller and like Jim Smith to be leading? Much easier than the names you had. They weren’t impossible, but what? How Lee? How Tong Lee. And who was the other person? Uh, Matthew Jordan. I had trouble with. No, there was someone else. Matt Fitzpatrick. Yakob Scav Olison. Oh, yeah. Yeah, if that’s how you say it. I was just say my man Jake. Yeah. Well, the guy who’s in uh third. Tied for third right now through seven. Yeah, Matthew Jordan. Uh, who else? Uh, Matt Fitzpatrick. And then the other one. Not seeing anything. Do you know that one? I’m ass. Maybe you have a different leaderboard than me. I just updated. Uh, let me see. Update again. So, I’m going to do the Yeah, he’s tied for third. I don’t see anybody else tied for third. Did you do a refresh? Uh-huh. Okay. You don’t have it? Nope. No. All right. What is it? I I don’t know. I’ll just wait. Is it Matt Fitzpatrick? It’s not Matt Fitzpatrick or Matthew Jordan. There’s a third guy there that I see. And well, we’ll see how he does. Best of luck. Um, welcome into the show. Jason Ross, Chris here for a couple more days before we get Carmichael Dave back with us. He will be back next week. He did check in yesterday uh via the um chat, so you never know. He might he might hop in there and talk to you all. Okay. Weirdo. Party of one. He’s been behaving though. Uh, we didn’t do the bit where we and he had two weeks off. Like if we had done the overunder on number of tweets. I don’t think he’s been that active. He had this whole like I’m going to troll the people of England with my Oasis takes and I’m like, “Oh, we did. Why? This is when I was on vacation and he was about to go on his and I’m just like, nobody cares. Why do he care?” Did he ever end up doing that? He like wrote this huge long like lawyers like this is why I’m right and this is why you’re wrong type of thing on Oasis. Yeah. On Oasis versus Coldplay for some reason. So I know he’s more of a Coldplay fan than Oasis. Correct. Oh, they make more money. So obviously they’re the better one. Okay. He wins. Um did you respond? Did you get involved in that? Well, he sent it to me on the side and I’m like, I’m not reading this. Too long. I’m doing it for the troll. That’s a deep thought. Like, hey, I got to I got to do this for the troll out there. Okay. Very, very interesting. Well, we’ve got a fun Thursday show planned for you. Normally on Thursdays, we would have the great Sam Aik. I know I’m shamelessly pumping the poll here, but Sam does get I guess he does get some time off. He will be on vacation, so we won’t have him today. I think he’s out next week, too. Sam. Yeah. Um hopefully he’s okay. We know he’s had some issues before on vacation. No, I think they’re in Hawaii. Oh, yeah. Careful on those hikes, bud. It’s always a good public service message. Make sure you do okay on your hikes. Um I didn’t even see Sam in Vegas. I know he was there. We had him on last week, but um didn’t see him. I was it was there briefly. Kings, speaking of Vegas, keep on rolling. We’re going to talk a little bit about them today at 4 and 0. And now waiting to see really the rest of the action today to see if they’re one of the final four teams. They’re in pretty good position, but it it’s not locked in just as of yet for them. Uh we’ll have our normal things like Three for Madness, Safer Out. Uh we will have sports business with Kelly Brothers. Good to Business. He is going to join us at 7:30. Also today, speaking of the British Open, it is underway and our guy Garrett Johnston from the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast is out there and we’ll have a day one breakdown from him. I think we’re about game of golf. I think we’re about eight hours difference. 8 to nine hours difference. Eight. And so he’s going to join us 8:30 today, 8:30 tomorrow. We look forward to his perspective, what’s going on out there and a lot more on the Kings. So that will be 4:30 his time. 4:30 his time. 8:30. So when you ever you have to uh sometimes and have had in the past book guests for a variety of different shows, whether it’s this one or others. Um when you’re reaching out, do you do our time like Pacific time or their time or try to do both? Like I try to do both in my in my messages. If I don’t know where they are, I just put Pacific time, right? But if I know it’s someone on the East Coast or someone central, like that’s where they are, I’ll put their time, too. Do you put both, though? Yeah. Yeah, I do that, too. I’m like, “Hey, we’re looking for 8:30 our time. I believe that’ll be 4:30 in the afternoon, your time, if you know you’re available, blah blah blah.” Yeah. That’s that’s a trick of the trade for them because it’s like you want to give them you’re also doing it for yourself. It’s like, yeah, we’re looking for 8:30, but wait, what time is that? Your time. Yeah, they’re in they’re in the future. He is. He knows what’s going on in the future. So, he’s going to join us a little bit later. And we’ll wrap things up as always with Allan Styles and Cross Talk and Celebrity Birthdays at the end of the show. Um, I just got done uh before we get to leading off, I just got done seeing uh a little top 10 from ESPN. They did the top 10 plays of the first half. And what was interesting is nine of the 10 were catches, which is fine. I mean, that when you’re thinking of a play, it’s hard to you could have a moonshot home run, but number 10 was Patrick Bailey’s walk-off inside the park home run from the Giants just a few weeks ago or just last week. Um, that was number 10. Then you’re working your way up and I’m going all right there’s no doubt in my mind based on these other catches which were good that from the A’s Denzel Clark is going to be number one and then for a moment I couldn’t believe because they said number one uh Denzel Clark rob you know climbs the wall to rob a home run and I don’t have the audio on so I’m listen I’m just watching it and it was his first of his many great catches but he went up the wall in Toronto to make a great home run catch and I’m like wait that’s number one How is it not the one where he’s at Angel Stadium where he’s like Spider-Man and he’s halfway over the wall? Well, they did a basically a tribute to Denzel and he did that catch. Did the one where he smashes into the wall at home at Sutter Health Park and then the last one was the one where he was halfway up the wall and makes this amazing catch. So, he was all over the place um at number one. I like when you’re in here sometimes, Chris, and we’re watching the top 10. And you’re like, we both might go, that’s number seven. How is that number seven? Well, then we start betting. We don’t bet, but it’s just like, no way number six is going to be that good. See, see, or then we’re go like that. Oh, yeah. Okay, that’s pretty good. Or that goal in soccer or like that was good. I mean, all these are good, but sometimes you’re like, that’s good, but compared to like we want to be wowed. I want to I want to be dazzled. Go ahead and dazzle me. Um, and Denzel Clark, he dazzled. I’m attempting to dazzle Dave. Maybe we’ll do an entire show one time where you and I just continue to quote Parenthood for the not broadcasting. We’ll be narrow casting for people. Like we would have to It’s like, “All right, we watch this tonight and then tomorrow we’ll we’ll be prepared.” Yeah. Um, his name is cool. Um, it never ends. Like you’re on Edna’s ass. Like what? H, so many good quotes. I still can’t believe he’s supposed to be 36 in that movie. Martin. Yes. Wow. That one. Okay. I’ve been doing that a little bit lately, which is a weird thing for me. Um, a couple of times I’ve seen some movies like it. It would have to be a movie like that that when when did Parenthood come out? Late 80s, 1989. I’m going to go 88, but I’m going to trust you. You’re usually really good at this, so I’m feeling uh 88. But they give me the TV series. Let’s see. Where’s the movie? All right. Now, I’m have to Now I’m have to be very specific for Google. Sorry about that. Parenthood movie. um 19 89. Well done, Chris. Um August 2nd. So, you’ll have that pretty soon when we get to that. Um but what I’ve been doing lately, there was some movie that my wife My wife, by the way, happy birthday to my wife. My lovely wife. Happy birthday. Happy birthday. 29 today. Now, I feel a little guilty uh robbing the cradle here at this point. No. Um, happy birthday to Alva. Appreciate that. Her and her birthday today, but oh, she was watching um the remake of She likes old movies, but she was watching the remake of Sabrina, which way back when was Humphrey Bogard and somebody. Um, but now it’s Oh, I thought you were saying like Sabrina the Teenage Witch. No, no, no. Um, now or now, I don’t know. In like 80s or 90s it was Greg Caner but Harrison Ford. And so I’m watching the movie and I’ve seen Harrison Ford, you know, my entire life. But I’m watching it, Chris, and I’m going, “Oh, shoot.” When Harrison Ford made this movie, how am I not in that movie? He’s like my age now. And I go, man, it’s just weird to So I’ve been doing that a little bit like where you see a movie that’s been out for a long time and you know the actors have been around for a long time. I go, “Oh, how old were they when they made this movie?” So that one’s, you know, you know they’re older than you, but then when you’re watching, you’re going, “Oh man, they’re my age now.” Or they were, he was close to my age now is what it was. But very, very interesting, I think. What other movie do you think is random like Parenthood that you could do a ton of quoting of that people? Vegas Vacation. Um, Mcruber, obviously. Well, yeah, but that one I mean I say it’s random, but we all know that one, but I don’t think a lot of people would would get you for parenthood. I’m uh City Slickers, too. Um, and we only have Do we only have one Parenthood drop for like Yeah, the show. I think that’s it, right? The Dazzle Dave. Which is a completely random one, but it only work because we have Dave. Um, we got to get more Parenthood clips. That’s what I got to say. Um anyway, uh that is um Oh, happy birthday to Mrs. Ross. Appreciate that. Thank you, Zees. Yeah. Uh it’s okay, Jason. I don’t drink coffee either. I drink Celsius energy drinks. See, when you say like something like that, it’s just like that sounds way worse than coffee. Drinking energy drinks. Yeah. I’ve never been that. uh Red Bull or those I there’s so many of them out there now. You you haven’t done those or do that much. I mean back in my early 20s you were just pounding them when I couldn’t drink coffee. So you didn’t When did you start drinking coffee? I remember the 2007. Wow. You’re good with dates. It’s just a It’s just a thing you have. It was I was visiting Chicago to hang out with some friends and it was right after the Red Sox second World Series and just somebody had coffee or like I’ll have some coffee. I think it was like a Dunkin Donuts which we don’t have out we didn’t have out here at the time. I was like h this isn’t bad. Yeah. No, I love the smell of it. I actually like the taste of coffee. I just I don’t know. I don’t uh I don’t drink it. Haven’t done it. I remember when uh you know I’ve had a couple different stints in the morning and I think everybody that’s in this building at this moment or when Dave’s here you drink coffee I think does Pat not drink coffee? I don’t think so. I think Pat might be the only one. I think Cody does. Tom did. Um but I remember I think they’re like oh well once you start mornings you’ll definitely do coffee. I just don’t. I don’t know. Never have. Um at this point I don’t think I ever will. And the odd thing, like I said, is my parents both were basically put an IV drip up to them of coffee. Like they had coffee all day, all the time, multiple cups. Um, my wife doesn’t do it. I don’t do it. I don’t know. It’s not a It’s not our thing. But to each their own. But now coffee to me, Chris, is almost like I don’t know. It feels like a sport when you’re going to like people like I want this, this, and this. Double shots of this, half of this, half milk, half oat milk. I’m like, I what are all these orders? My goodness, over my head. But enjoy yours. Do you, right? Do you out there? All right, so like we said, we got a fun show pun for you today. We are just getting started. We always encourage your participation and you can do so at 916 339140 on the text line. Helps Al go rhythm. He’s uh he he gets unhappy if uh he’s not fed. So, so check him out and hit that thumbs up button. Uh we appreciate all that. But let’s do it. Let’s get you started with leading off. Let’s do it. Leading off the three top stories in the morning. Huge news. This is very important. Here’s cut number one. So, plus eight is the final score here and the Sacramento Kings are the first team in Vegas to move to 4 and0. They did it. They won yesterday. Um, good performance, solid. I think there were some really good things to like from that. Kings, if we’re looking at, you know, critiquing summer league play as far as the team, uh, didn’t rebound very well, uh, on the defensive boards. uh didn’t shoot the three very well, but look, I think it’s been clear, we’re going to hear some audio uh today from from the game yesterday, but it is clear that they want to win the summer league championship. I like that. I like that focus. I like that direction. I like that um drive that they’re trying to catch something here. They are trying to drive their way to a championship in Las Vegas, but you know what they’ll need? They’ll need a bunch of energy to get it done. Um, and if they can do that now, we’re just hitting them all um in Las Vegas. No, I think it’s clear that this is what they’re they’re going for. And I think that’s pretty cool. Um, have a goal, set it, and go for it. It’s what you do in the regular season. Every team’s goal should be, you know, the the highest of the bar is to win the championship. And maybe that’s feels like a goal for a lot of teams that’s too far out of bounds. But other times it’s like, all right, look, uh, have the best season possible, try to get to the postseason, and then, you know, go from there. So, look, this group has already now completed the schedule portion of their Las Vegas journey. Everybody gets the four games in the round robin schedule. Everybody will get at least a fifth game. So if the Kings don’t get in by tiebreaker points, they’ll get one more game there. If they do get in, they’re basically in the final four. Win that game, then you’re in the championship. Win the championship, you get your ring, there you go. Summer league championship, it would be their third. No team uh it’s the Kings and the Blazers, I believe, that have two summer league championships. And for some, oh, they’re probably going to mock Sacramento. Oh, good. you win summer league championships. That’s fine. I I don’t I don’t care what other people are saying about that. I care about what the Kings care about and they seemingly care about winning this thing. So, I’m in for it. I’m in for it. I don’t I said it from the get-go. My concerns were watching the development of Isaac Jones and Devin Carter and then the first look at Maxim Reno and Nick Clifford. And I think a lot of those things have been on the positive. A byproduct of it is they’ve been winning and then now they are motivated. They want to win the championship. Go for it. I want what they want. So, um, if other people, you know, out there go, well, I care about winning NBA championships. Good for you. I do, too. Kings have never done that in the in Sacramento, but they’ve won a couple of summer league titles. This seems to be important to the group. So, I say go for it. Now, today, they’ll do some scoreboard watching. A couple of the teams that were three and 0 won yesterday, but there was a uh you know, Minnesota won by not enough basically to surpass the Kings and you got a bunch of other teams in action today trying to get to 4-0 and uh two play each other. So, someone’s not going to get there and we’ll see if the others can not only win but win by a lot and improve their standing. So, the Kings are kind of right on the edge. I would say they’re in good position, not great or the best, but good. and their odds of advancing are probably over 50% but not not foolproof yet. So, uh we’ll keep you up to date on that and then we’ll obviously know by tomorrow uh what their standing is. All right, let’s get to cut number two. Cut number two. Bradley Beal of the Phoenix Suns has reached agreement on a contract buyout with the Suns. He’s giving back $13.9 million out of his $110 million contract. His representative Mark Barlino of Priority Sports tells me the plan is for Bradley Beal now to sign a two-year 11 million deal to join the Los Angeles Clippers. So Brad Beal, Kawhi Leonard, James Harden will all team up together with the Clippers. And so he’s giving up some money in this buyout with the Suns, but this now gives an opportunity to compete for a championship, a better basketball fit for him. So, he is set to join uh the Clippers as we are tweeting away here right now. All right, that was Sham’s yesterday. It was kind of the worstkept secret. Phoenix’s overhaul kind of continues. They moved Kevin Durant this off season in a trade to Houston. Now, they have bought out Bradley Beal. They have extended Devin Booker. So, the once big three is now down to Booker. Um, I thought all along if they were really trying to completely turn over the team, I think Booker would have been the move that got him the most value in return. They did get some stuff back for Kevin Durant be they just have to basically eat it and say see you later. Um, and then him going to the Clippers. We’re going to talk about that in the show here about the kind of the best moves that each Western Conference team has made or the biggest moves. And you know, the Clippers every year I kind of fall for the Clippers and I I like their roster, but if you think about it, Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Bradley Beal, if we’re talking like 2019, it’s like my goodness, all three of these guys on the same team. It is later. Harden still had an all-star year. Kawawaii when he’s on is still terrific. To me, it’s more the question of Bradley Beal. Can he find his game again? He was not the same guy that we saw with the Wizards when he was with the Suns. And that’s just a pairing that that didn’t work. And now we’re back to talent and fit, right? Talented player in Bradley Beal, talented player in Durant, talented player in Booker. For whatever reason, the fit didn’t work. I actually thought this year they fooled me. I thought the Clipper, excuse me, I thought the Suns would be a lot better. They got off to like that nine and one start and then two of the next four games they played they played the Kings and lost and then they just I mean again going nine and one and then missing the playoffs they really didn’t have a very good year the rest of the year at all. So uh we’ll talk a little bit more about them throughout the uh show as well. All right, let’s get to cut number three. Cut number three. We’re going to play the British Open music that you’ll hear on the reports from Chris. Uh the British Open is underway. We will have reports throughout the show. Golf’s final major and we’re going to check in a little bit later in the show with Garrett Johnston from the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast who’s out there. He will join us around 8:30. Kelly Brothers at 7:30. But you’re all here with us today, this morning. We thank you for that. when we come back safe or out, including maybe some uh tweaks to the All-Star game that already happened, but to the roster of people that actually left that weren’t involved in the swing off. Will that change? We’ll discuss that at Safer Out next. You never know what you might hear when listening to a Sacramento Kings game. Keegan going for another triple. Man, is he feeling it? Keegan, can he do it? Yes. There’s number 11, Keegan Murray. Keegan steps back. He just knocked down his 12th three-pointer, a Kings franchise record. He’s got 45 points. Three pitches, three swings. It’s safe or out on the Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross. All right, safe or out time here on the show where we take a look at some things going on in and around baseball. One more day off. They’re back in action tomorrow around the major leagues. Uh Chris, safer out. What do we got first? The MLB All-Star game had 8.1 million viewers, making it the most watched All-Star game in sports. Safer out. Those numbers in the game were a huge success for baseball. Um, well, probably. I think that’s safe. Um, you now you got to dive into the numbers a little bit. Look, it’s baseball kind of has this window where it is their game to showcase their players. There’s not a lot of other stuff going on. I mean 8.1 they’ll take but you know we’re baseball. What else you got? Exactly. Um that that could be their slogan. We’re baseball. What else you doing? What else you up to? Stop pretending you have plans baseball. Catch it. Um but you know I don’t know. I think we’re two weeks. So yeah, two weeks from today for the Hall of Fame game. I I don’t even What are those numbers going to be? just absolutely absurd for a preseason game, the first one in July for the all for the NFL. So, look, baseball should enjoy it. I I said this yesterday. I think they’re in a healthy spot as far as what their product is on the field. Now, it’s them back on them. And they’ve done this for years. This isn’t like a hey, uh this last couple years, baseball has done some damage to its fan base. this goes back to, you know, the strike to other sports going past them. Um, I don’t know how much more they can really tweak the sport, but without, you know, there’s a weird they’re in a little bit of a weird position because baseball does have its fans. I I would say I’m one of them. And Chris, there’s I think like you and Dave would be like, “Ah, cut the season short.” Like, I’m not for that. And I don’t know, I think if they they would run the risk of people that have maybe lost interest that say they would be more interested if the season was shorter. I just don’t know if that’s true. I think it’s more a reflection. I personally think you just don’t enjoy the game as much. I don’t think it’s if they told said today Rod Manfred came out Chris and said, “Hey, you know what? We’re going to play a 100 game season.” You might personally like that, but I don’t think you’re going to sit down on the Tuesday and go, “Oh, I’m going to watch Mets and Cubs.” Well, here’s where you’re right, Jason. What? When it was shortened to a 60 game season, I wasn’t really watching that much either. Yeah. So, I think that’s the problem. Baseball is in. It’s like I I still think you got to cater to the fans that have always liked baseball and still like baseball. It’s just you’re trying to get new people. The ones that you’ve lost, I think you lost them and I don’t know how you get them back. But, um, anyway, I think it was a good day. That’s safe. Uh, the numbers are nice, but it’s just kind of what were people’s options. So, all right, let’s get to safer out number two. Safer out. The AL MVP race is the best thing to watch in the American League in the second half of the season. Um, it’s probably out, but it’s going to be a great race. I mean, Cal Raleigh has done an amazing job to get in this race. It was Aaron Judge was the favorite going in. I think after May, he was like the odds even went to just an astronomical level. He’s still had a great year, but Cal Raleigh has come on and done things historically that we just haven’t seen. So, you’ve got um nearly the most home runs by the All-Star break. He was one off of Barry Bonds. Um he’s I think only a few away now from the most home runs by a catcher. Um so, he needs to keep doing that. Seattle needs to win. Maybe Judge needs to cool off, but it is more of a race. I know Chris and I have had some fun with that. But, it’s it’s been good. And I would say it’s out just because I don’t think that’s more intriguing than the division race or race is. But um it’s it’ll be fun to watch and every year, you know, Bobby Wit was really pushing Judge at the end of last year. Judge was pushing Otani the year before that. So uh the AL race for the MVP has been good the last couple years. We’ll see if Judge has been really struggling. He has been lately in the last two months. His average has dropped 50 points. Yeah. Now he’s only 350 or whatever he is. And if this trend continues and it only bat 300. All right. Uh number three say out with the new swingoff rule in the all-star game. Guys that started the game will now stay until the end. So, you know, we were saying yesterday, we were getting, you know, they were saying on the broadcast that kind of part of the reason why Aaron Boon and Dave Roberts picked the guys they did, they wanted to take guys that were just in the game and maybe not guys that have cooled off. Well, it turns out that I guess people leave. Like Aaron Judge had already left, few other guys that already left. So, if you start the game, it’s I guess it’s more common, and I didn’t know this, but I guess it makes sense. guys just kind of want to get on to the sooner they can to their all-star break. I don’t know if this will change. Um I mean, we may never have another tie again. We might have three years of ties in a row. I don’t know. But I I I personally think the players will care more about their break than they will care about sticking around for the swing off. Yeah. I think if he told Aaron Judge, “Hey, this is most likely going to go to a swing off and we want you to hit Can you change your plans? Yeah. No, but I mean I also think about the time that they’re save and and when I think about it, this is what I envision. It’s like, okay, Aaron Judge, I don’t know what he played till like the third inning, fourth inning. Then it’s like, all right, Judge, you’re out. We’re pinch hitting for you or just someone else is going to the outfield. All right. Goes in, showers, grabs his stuff, goes right to the airport, flying, and he’s gone. I don’t know if it’s as simple as that or it’s like, now I’m going to, you know, my family’s here. um just going out tonight with the family, fly out in the morning. I just don’t know how that goes, but I envision them like leaving town like taxi and then they’re just gone. Now I’m envisioning him with some people out at a restaurant just having dinner and then him looking up at the TV. He’s watching the swing. Oh, wait. This is still going on. Yeah. And that’s like they set up the signal and he comes back and he’s in straight clothes. That’d be fun. Why not? Yeah. I think that was the only thing that was was on Well, one, we’ve never seen it. I don’t even know when they added that rule. Um, and maybe it was sometime and it was like, “Hey, if the All-Star game’s ever tied, we’re going to have a swing off.” Okay, well, that’ll probably never happen. And it happened. I don’t know if that was just recently added, but I thought it was cool. It was a cool moment. Gave us Schwarber to go three for three. Somehow got the MVP, but nonetheless, um I Yeah, I don’t know if it’ll impact uh the superstars, or not, I say superstars, but the guys, it could be anybody that they had thought about putting in the swing off, but they started the game and they left. Yeah, I don’t think you’re going to I don’t think you want to force guys to stay there, to be there, but it’s cool if they do because then you’re there with the rest of your American League or National League teammates and just kind of hanging out and see uh see how it all progresses. So there you go. That is safe or out. We’ve got a little bit more baseball coming up much more in three for Madness including like we touched on earlier and leading off Bradley Be getting bought out by the Suns to eventually is going to land with the Clippers. Which teams in the Western Conference, what were their biggest and most significant moves this off season? Kings included. No offense to Verizon. I’m sure they stand for something. I just don’t know what it is. Pure Talk, on the other hand, is a veteranowned company that supports our military in a big way, and I appreciate that. Yeah, I also appreciate unlimited talk and text and plenty of data for half the cost of the big guys. And I do like being on America’s most dependable 5G network for just 20 bucks a month. But what I really appreciate is no contract, no cancellation fees, and Pure Talk’s commitment to handle all their customer service in this country. I saw it for myself. I went to Georgia. The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross. Call or text at 9163391 1140 on Sack Town Sports. All right, Jason Ross, Christopher Lock, Carmichael Davis back with us on Monday. Um, I’m guessing I know the answer to this, Chris, but did you see one second or any of the SPS? I saw a couple clips from Twitter. Okay. Were they show what I didn’t see any? Uh, no. I saw the opening. So, I watched Shane Gillis’s open his monologue. Um, is that what was being put out on Twitter or Yeah, there’s a couple of those jokes and then he had some sketch about the invention of the tush push. Oh, yeah. That that one I did see that one was all right. Yeah. Um, to me his monologue I I I don’t know. I didn’t necessarily love it. It was okay. I felt like where he did the best was he was making fun of the jokes like h that one didn’t work kind of thought it wouldn’t I knew it wouldn’t work all week and like people were laughing at that more so it’s like what come on this is jokes and so people like that was such a weird audience to begin with it is and I don’t think I mean and the one he did do he did you I don’t know if they played this to he did the homage to Norm he did the basically the same joke oh no I didn’t see that he did it exactly the same but he did it with Travis Hunter cuz he’s like, “Hey,” and he said it, too. He goes, “Hey, look, this last joke is uh I know it won’t work. I mean, this is like how he did a lot.” It’s like, and it’s just a dumb joke, but it’s a it’s an homage to my my guy Nor McDonald. And um so here it is. And so it’s like he basically just I don’t know. It was so like uh very clunky in the way he did it, I guess, but he’s like, “Hey, Travis Hunter, congratulations. You won the Heisman, you know, offensive player, defensive player. Nothing could take that away from you ever. Congratulations. Well, unless of course you kill your ex-wife and a waiter and then not a lot there. He goes, “Ah, it went about exactly as I thought it would go.” And then that’s where maybe more of the laughs would come in. But anyway, didn’t watch a lot of the show. I did see that opening and uh it’s fine. Another edition of the SBS. Uh a couple other things here on the text line before we roll along. Uh we were talking about coffee earlier. I remember when uh we were kids, my grandparents would take us camping and would always let me have a cup. They would always let me have a cup with them, but only on camping trips. I remember they would tell me that you would uh stop growing if you drink too much. That’s where parents are great or grandparents. The lies they will tell you for the things they don’t want you to do. Well, with our parents, I think it was lies that were told to them. True. I mean, again, I want to find the person who’s the one, Chris, that came up with first that said you can’t go swimming for 30 minutes after you eat. Yeah. One random number of time. Two, like for the most part, I think this is in a pool, maybe in the ocean, but like what what’s going to happen? Like what’s the thought process behind that? Are you getting sick? Are you going to get like more times than not, it’s like you’ll get a cramp. Yeah. You’ll get a cramp and you won’t be able to swim and you’ll drown. In your life, have you had a cramp swimming? No. Yeah, me neither. Uh, no. But someone’s told us that and someone told our parents that and someone told someone else before that. Got to wait 30 minutes before you eat or after you eat before you go swimming. I don’t get it. Um, here’s another one. We were talking about baseball shrinking down their games. The co year when it was 60 games. I watched so much more because more games were meaningful. Maybe, but also was that at a time like COVID we’re all locked in and like h I’ll watch some baseball. I’ll watch them play amongst the cardboard cutouts. Uh and then I was asking earlier about when that rule had been in effect as far as the swing off. I guess thank you to the 209. The rule has been in effect since 2022. So there you go. Uh the British Open is underway. You’ll get reports uh at the top of every hour here throughout the day of day one and day two. We also will have a full report from our guy Garrett Johnston who’s out there at the from the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast will give us up to date on what’s going on on the course. Um everybody as uh most everybody has gotten underway. No, there’s a few more guys that have yet to tee off. Excuse me. There are a few left to go. We’re about an 8 hour differential. So, we’re still uh early enough in round one, but a few people are completed with their rounds. As far as the top of the leaderboard, uh the most familiar names now in a tie for first, Matthew Fitzpatrick is at four under. Uh right there in the hunt, some other intriguing names you got at three under par, Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Ricky Fowler is tied for seventh at two under. And then uh Phil Mickelson and Scotty Sheffler, JJ Spawn all tied for 10th at one under amongst another group of golfers at one under par. Um to me of the golfing majors, I don’t know how the golfers themselves uh treat this. There’s great history for the open, but part of it is a little bit of the west coast now here time differential and you know when a lot of the rounds are already getting underway now when you get to the weekend and the Saturday and Sunday and the finals uh the final groupings are out we get to watch them pretty much from when you get up to to middle of the day that’s a little different but so time differential is one too um I don’t know I just haven’t been as much into the British Open as compared you know, the history of of the masters of the US Open. Um, but still, it’s another major. It’s another opportunity for these guys to to continue on their way and either help or hurt their legacy. And something we talked about yesterday that I think was getting a little bit more feedback um was Scotty Sheffller and he had more comments or he had these comments the other day about going to this tournament and just trying to figure out almost like the the meaning of life for him. What they thought was going to fulfill them in life and then you get there and all of a sudden you get to number one in the world and they’re like what’s the point? I really do believe that because you know what is the point? You’re like, “What? Why do I want to win this tournament so bad?” That’s something that I wrestle with on a daily basis is like showing up at the Masters every year. It’s like, “Why do I want to win this golf tournament so badly? Why do I want to win the Open Championship so badly?” I don’t know. Because if I win, it’s going to be awesome for about two minutes and then we’re going to get to the next week and it’s going to be like, “Hey, you won two majors this year. How important is it for you to win the FedEx Cup playoffs?” And it’s just like, “We’re back here again.” You know? So, we really do. We work so hard for such little moments and um you know, I’m kind of a sicko. I love putting in the work. I love being able to practice. I love getting out to live out my dreams. But at the end of the day, sometimes I just don’t understand the point. You know what’s interesting about that is, and for any of you out there that, you know, I grew up playing sports at a sports family. Like that was I would say I don’t even know. I wouldn’t say it was my goal, but maybe it was a dream to be a professional athlete, right? And so you’re thinking, you got to have a lot of things go right. And there is an incredible amount of work ethic, certainly talent. You need a lot of people in your corner. And now things are even more and more different. And it’s so scaled down to uh really fine-tuning your sport, working on it, you know, 12 months a year, um specialized coaches, the amount of money that it takes to get you to that level. I mean, it’s unfortunate that a lot of it is on that like opportunities, being seen, uh getting the best coaches that you possibly can, um going to tournaments, it just there there’s whether it’s individual sport or team sport. And and to me, I was always a believer and I still like the concept and the idea of if you want to be a professional athlete in whatever sport you end up being the best at. I like the idea of of people playing multiple sports. I think you can learn different things from different sports. I think each sport can help you in its own way. Different muscles, different things, different concepts, whether you’re doing some individual sports or team sports. But I think if you play football, then move into basketball and baseball or golf or track or volleyball or swimming. I I just think, you know, little doses of all of that. And maybe some of them you’re not the best. So, do you work harder in that or do you give that one up or what’s the one you enjoy the most? I personally like that concept, but I’m not saying it’s wrong if you just lock drop everything else, lock in and focus in on one sport. Whatever, Kamie. Which what you just hate capitalism. Yeah. Yeah. But that’s the part that’s that’s I know Chris there are going to be stories of people that truly and there are that have come from nothing and I love it and then get a chance to be professionals. There to be professional athlete to begin with. I think you have to have something wrong with you because if you talk to a lot of people that have played one sport for like a lot of their lives and like you see this sometimes in high school and stuff like that where it’s just like I don’t want to play this anymore. I’m burnt out. Like I’ve been doing this my entire life. I want to do something different. Yeah. because there was probably a time that people would say, and I don’t know the answer to this anymore, but I’m trying to figure out if you went all in as a we’ll pick an age. You’re you’re 10 years old, you’re obviously starting to be good at whatever sport it is. I don’t know what sport would be quote the least expensive because there was a time like especially now. Yeah, that’s what I mean. Like I would say, oh, it’s basketball. The thought is like, oh, just a basketball. you go to a court that that’s not the way it works. Like you’re going to have to be in some sort of league, probably get an individual coach, shoes, ball. I mean, that stuff’s not always incredibly expensive, but it’s the other stuff now that we’re talking about. Individual coaching work. I got a shooting coach, got a defensive coach. Uh I’m playing in this league, but I got to go to this tournament. And now all of a sudden, you’re going, “Wait, we don’t have this kind of income as a family.” So, I don’t know which one. And there will be stories of people that are just that gifted and can go like I just played basketball at the park and then got to my high school team, got seen, and then, you know, finally got into a system where I was maybe taken care of. But I I don’t think that’s going to happen that often. Well, how many of the athletes did you hear like growing up like, “Oh, yeah. He was a three sport athlete in high school.” Yeah. Oh, he got a scholarship to play football and baseball in college. It’s just too good. And I don’t I think it’s very rare that we see something like that. Yeah. Now, if you’re playing like golf, um, tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, like these are all getting incredibly expensive if you kind of lock in at that rate. And then you go, you I’m sure the parents have the vision of like, well, my kid will be the one that’ll get the scholarship and that’ll pay for all this. I hope so. I hope so. But doesn’t always work that way. It’s just you start to as you move up, the percentages of of advancing just start to uh decrease by by the level. All right. Uh we will have more updates about golf though as we continue on. But that is your leaderboard update. Now, let’s get back to the Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross. Three questions, three answers. It’s three for madness on the Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross. Here’s question one. All right, hour number two underway again. Kelly Brothers joining us at the bottom of the hour talking sports business. good at business. We look forward to hearing what’s on his mind later today in about 30 minutes or so. So, that is coming your way. No Sam A, unfortunately today. Sam will be back with us in a in a couple of weeks. I know I’m shamelessly pumping the poll here. Not too many weeks left for Sam. Get a little hiatus and then we’ll get him back going again in when basketball returns. But the Kings are in action or were in action yesterday. We got much more on their game and how they’ve looked so far. Um, including, you know, another another good performance by Nick Clifford. Man, I like what I see from him. He is getting better by the game. Uh, Maxi Renault was solid. Isaac Jones, I thought was really good yesterday. And then Devin Carter um was best two games were game two and game three. Had some moments yesterday, but we’ll talk a little bit about Devin’s performance as well. So, all the guys, but most importantly, they won. That’s 4-0. Now, we do a little scoreboard watching today to see if they can advance to the final four. But you heard coming in from the uh break there, it’s three for madness time. So, let’s hit you with question number one, Chris. The WNBA is unveiling a four-point shot for the WNBA All-Star game this weekend. Was MTV’s rocking jock ahead of its time? So, didn’t they have like a 25-point shot? I want to say they had three baskets and one was a 10 and one was a 25 and the 25 was distance and wasn’t it like way up there? Yeah, super high. Yeah. Um I don’t know that we need that but the four-point shot obviously this for the WNB All-Star game. I those gimmicks are fun. Wasn’t I want to say there was a league that Mike Bby was a trying to get started. Yeah, it wasn’t the big three. No, it was like an LED court and there would be different like power up type of things or like hot zones or interesting concept which I was really looking forward to and it sounded like it just never it never got going. Yeah, cuz I was trying to remember. Next time we talked to Mike Pivy. Yeah, I don’t remember seeing that. Was he the one trying to get it going or was he just like kind of involved in it? I think he was just involved with it. Yeah. But yeah, how much did you like MTV’s Rock and Jock? I loved it. I talk about that all the time. I wish that’s what all the Allstar games would be. Yeah. And that too was a good mixture, if I remember right, of athletes, but also musicians, right? Or was it the athletes and celebrities? And celebrities. That’s what it was. Yeah. And cuz I remember the rock and jock softball games. Yeah. Which I don’t know why can’t you bring that back. You know what’s weird is like I enjoyed that but I don’t know that I’ve enjoyed that much like at the NBA All-Star game when they have the celebrity game there. Yeah. Well, because it’s just like meh. Yeah. Like I remember it was they had like the different power ups and one was like okay the pitcher has this ball so everyone batting has to run the opposite direction. And uh one inning the bullpens were open and there are these gates that opened where you could go and like rob a home run. Okay, these are all things I think maybe like uh like the Savannah bananas have mastered or something. There was the granny ball now that I remember it where you could ask for and it was three grandmas that were put on base so it’s an automatic like bases loaded and then you they had to all score grandmas and they were really grandmas. I don’t know if they were really grandmas but they’re like people dressed up as grand. Oh my gosh. and that and when everybody’s a grandma that they say they’re dressed up, they’re always in like some sort of like mumu and like curlers and like Exactly. That’s not how every grandma is. But anyway, um yeah, Rock and Shock was fun. And yeah, WNBA, why not why not do this? Uh unfortunately, I know Caitlyn Clark, who I think was a proponent of this, uh is hurt and we’re not certain whether or not she’s going to play this weekend, but I I think for Allstar Games, you take it for what it’s worth. That’s what it is. It’s a showcase. Have some fun with it. Why not? And so, yeah, I don’t mind the four-point uh shot. What was the other show? I was just thinking about this when you were talking about Rock and Jock. Um it was Oh, um uh Joe, wait. Pro Pros versus Joe’s. Oh, yeah. I was gonna say Joe’s versus or something, but yeah. Um, that was a that was a pretty cool show where I think they were doing things that were in the like the pros field of choice and then the Joe’s would try to match him or beat him or something like that. I can’t remember the exact concept of it, but I remember enjoying it watching. Uh, former classmate and uh, radio personality Kenny was on Pros versus Joe. He was. Yeah, he was. And he won like a game-winning shot. Did he really? Yeah. Oh, I didn’t know that. Yeah. Oh, that’s cool. Do you know who the pro was? I think it was like they had some sort of like out of bounds play is what I remember. I can’t remember what it was. Wonder if I could find that. That’s really cool. I didn’t know that. Um. Uh, let’s see. I don’t see if I can find it. Yeah. Anyway, I next time I see him, I’m asking about that. I did not know that. That’s really cool. So, you obviously watch the episode. I’ve seen that part. I mean, I’m pretty sure he puts it on his social media every once in a while. I can’t let you forget about that. Yeah. No, you should, but I haven’t I have not uh I should find that. I should track that down. That’s cool. That’s really cool. Yeah. Pros versus Joe’s. I like that. That was a fun show. All right. Uh, question number two. MLB had their first ever swing off at the All-Star game yesterday. If you could decide the All-Star game on an alltime swing off, who would you put in the box for your three NL and 3 AL hitters? All right, alltime swing off American League and National League. So, some of the answers I my criteria there might be better home run hitters in the history of the game. Not many from what I have here, but like if we’re talking like Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, apologies Willie Mays to those guys. I I just, you know, I’ve seen highlights. I’ve seen clips, but I didn’t watch them play. So, in my criteria, it’s people that I watched play. Um, and I’m having a little bit of a harder time filling out the third on each one, but I’m gonna start with what I definitely know. If I’m doing an all-time swing off, and I’d love to see this swing off, everybody in their prime. National League, I’m definitely putting bonds, and I’m going to make Maguire a National League guy. My third one in the NL, I am debating between Sosa and Puh Holse. And I think I’m going to go Albert Pulse. So, sorry, Sammy. Puh Hol got to Yeah, he got to over 700 home runs. So, I’m going to have Bonds, Maguire, and Puh Holse. That would be my swingoff choices. In the American League, all time three, I’m going to go Griffy. Just just I mean, everybody loves Griffy. Just a beautiful swing. I’m going to pick my current guy, All Rise, Aaron Judge. And then I’m between Oh man, I forgot about him too. Um, oh boy. I’m Yeah. Okay. Griffy and Judge. I’m locking in. I’m thinking about A-Rod, Reggie Jackson, or Frank Thomas. Man, I h I think I’ll eliminate A-Rod. And now it’s Reggie or Frank Thomas. Reggie’s got such a swagger about him. Frank Thomas is just so menacing up there. I guess I’ll take Reggie, but I I don’t know. So, I’m going to go Bonds, Maguire, Poolh Holse, Griffy, Judge, and Reggie Jackson for my all-time American League, National League swing off. Chris, did you make a list? I haven’t got my National League player yet. Okay. But you have your I I think I know. Uh I don’t know who you’re going to have. I don’t I can’t tell if your list is going to be fake or real. It’s real. Okay. What do you got? But then, see, I’m not thinking of like alltime home run hitters. I’m not necessarily going for the even though all these guys have the most. I’m just thinking who I would really love to see do this and I like a lot of these guys. So yeah, I’m going to say for the American League, Josh Hamilton. Okay. Off of his insane home run derby. Y uh Ted Williams. Perfect. And then this might be surprising to a lot of people. Ichiro. Oh yeah. No, that’d be fun. And that’s I think he would do well. You see, you’ve heard people like, “Oh yeah, he has an insane horror.” I want to say he was in some sort of home run derby in Japan where he was just like flat out crushing the ball. Yeah, I heard the same about Gwyn. Like Gwyn’s like, I could hit home runs like but I’m trying to, you know, put the ball in play more and get hits. But I’m like, man, if he has that much control of the bat, I’m sure he could control the launch angle and hit home runs. But um Okay, I like that. I thought you would pick Big Poppy. No, like I’m trying to remember. I can’t remember him in a home run derby. I know, but I mean, you know, he could hit a B. Okay, so I think I got who who I want now. Bobby Abrau. Okay. Barry Bonds. Okay. Willie Mazize. Oh, yeah. That’s a great list. That’s a great list. You know, it’s funny that they added this gimmick in 2022. It’s the first time it’s materialized in 2025. I don’t know that they need to change the home run derby because I think that did great. But like this swingoff thing, it’s almost like I feel like you want to see it every All-Star game now. Um, maybe not to decide it, but I don’t know. I think that’s cool. So, all time I think we both have pretty good lists. Different lists, but good lists. I like it. All right, let’s get to uh question number three. Question three. Bradley Beal was bought out yesterday in Phoenix and landed in Los Angeles to play for the Clippers. How do you rate this move for each team? Okay. Um, we’re going to get into that. Let’s get a little feedback. Uh, one from Ramsey. Uh, no Maze or Aaron for the National League. Um, I got Maze. You ended up picking Maize. Also, no Andre Dawson. No, not for me. And my criteria, if you missed it, Ramsey was I I wanted to have seen them play. Doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I mean, Maize and Aaron are legends. I mean, Babe Ruth legend. These are all incredible. But, um, I thought she saw Taika play. I did. I just didn’t see. I didn’t watch the other guys out of disgust. Yeah. Um, let’s see. We got others saying Sosa Maguire. Sure. Love to see that for sure. But does Sosa have the corkked bat? Yeah. Okay. I think we’re giving them all aluminum. Now, now I’m rethinking some things. Aluminum bats for everybody. Let’s see how far they can hit it. All right. So, yeah, Bradley Beal is out in Phoenix and he was bought out. He goes to the Clippers. And you know, how do you rate this move for each team? If we look at that for Phoenix, uh it it’s kind of I guess admitting what they had tried didn’t work or didn’t work to the the capabilities that they had hoped for for sure. Um when you have Durant, Beal, and Booker, you’re thinking of a title. This was a team that did make the finals a few years back, ultimately lost to the Bucks. And I remember that year after they did that and they moved on from Chris Paul and DeAndre and I thought, you know, this I think that’s going to catch up to him. Then when you get Durant and you get um Beal, you’re definitely excited about what your team could be. And whether it was injuries the first year and some the second year, it just it just never worked. So Phoenix at least is getting out of it. Um for the Clippers, I I I guess I like it. I It’s low risk for them. He’s only going to make about five million uh per season and then you try to figure out uh where he fits with that team. But kind of along that line, I wanted to go over what was maybe the the best and most significant offseason move to date, at least for each team in the Western Conference, which you know, Kings fans would be concerned about. And we’ll just do this in no particular order. We actually do this in alphabetical order, I guess. Uh, starting with the Dallas Mavericks as team one. I think their biggest, most significant offseason move was adding Cooper Flag. I mean, you get the first pick, you get the good fortune of that after the whole fiasco with the uh Luca trade, which was widely panned. I I think they shouldn’t have been ripped as as harsh as they were. I got the logic. I got the reasoning. I think the the practice of it though, the execution of it is where they really had a mistake. I think if you opened up Luca, the possibility of trading Luca to the entire league, that word would have got out so that you run that risk. But number two, I think you could have got I I would have been intrigued about the offers that would have come the way of Nico Harrison. So getting Anthony Davis, focusing on defense, getting Max Christie and a few picks, like all in all, people are going to kill that deal. I I think I’m I’m comfortable waiting. I’m I’m okay to wait and see how it plays out for both the Lakers and the Mavs in this. So, uh, but, uh, after going through all that, the good fortune of winning the lottery for Nico Harris and getting Cooper flag, yeah, they added D’Angelo Russell, which will be important, uh, while Kyrie is hurt, but I think Cooper Flag is obviously their biggest and most important offseason move. You go to Denver, they were very, very aggressive. Um, the one I think that’s going to catch the most attention, obviously they added Valenunis from from the Kings in that trade. um Bruce Brown in a deal, Tim Hardaway Jr. in a deal. But to me, it’s it’s the decision to move on from Michael Porter Jr. for Cam Johnson. I think that one was received a little bit better for a lot of people than I I Cam Johnson’s intriguing to me. when when guys become so popular amongst a lot of people as far as people that are coveted. John Collins, I felt this way a little bit about like everybody, oh, you got to trade for John Collins, who I think is good. Cam Johnson’s good. He’s a good player, but it was almost like Cam Johnson was the one that was going to change every team’s outlook. Uh to me, Michael Porter Jr.’s a good player. So, you’re you’re ch uh changing fit here. Um and will this work? I don’t know. I think Michael Porter Jr. is pretty talented. Cam Johnson is pretty talented. It’s It’ll be a little different. They both can shoot it. Uh it’s just to me it’s Denver trying something else and I’m anxious to see it, but I think that’s the the biggest most significant move. Moving out one starter for likely another in Cam Johnson. All right, as we move on in the Western Conference, most significant moves, we go to a team that I think would be the case study right now in how difficult it is to move in the current collective bargaining agreement. And what I mean by that is dealing with the first apron, the second apron, their biggest chip is still unresolved and that’s restricted free agency. And I’m talking about the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kaminga. Kaminga is a player that I’m sure the Warriors were thinking when this summer was going to be coming around. Um, this will be our biggest piece to to either add and keep or move and get talent in return. I think what they’re seeing is in this restricted free agency spot, he’s going to want a lot of money, which I understand that. I think Kaminga also wants a larger role, which I don’t think the Warriors are willing to offer. I think other teams are, but those other teams, maybe the Kings, maybe a few others are going, “Yeah, we see you’re in kind of a pinch here, Warriors. So, we’re going to probably lowball our offer, which I think is a smart thing to do. See where the tipping point is for the Warriors to go, you know what? We really don’t want to take a lower offer, but we also don’t want to have to pay him a big deal or even a single one-year deal and hit a number that everybody’s happy with. So, the Warriors at this point, their biggest move is losing Cavon Looney. Now, I think they can overcome that. I also don’t want to diminish what he has meant to that team and that organization from being a professional, his leadership, his experience, and his production. So, the Warriors at the moment really I feel like their big move is still at the tail end of last year when they added Jimmy Butler at the deadline and they looked like a completely different team and built all that confidence and swagger and and bold statements at the All-Star break where they said they were going to win the championship. We know they didn’t, but I think a lot of you out there, you know, I thought that I thought the statement was crazy when Draymond said it and then the more I thought about it, I was like, you know, this is more of a mindset shift. I think this team was thinking it’s just it wasn’t going to happen. You’re you’re out there competing. This is a championship organization. They know what it takes. But just that trade and the mindset of Jimmy Butler and what Draymond and Steph now saw went to a spot where Draymond felt comfortable enough to make the prediction. Obviously, it didn’t work, but it was that mindset shift to the team. And for a while there, they were looking like a team that could actually do it. And uh so their biggest move at this point is Looney. They’re still waiting on Kaminga and there’s still some carryover from that Jimmy Butler deal at the trade deadline. Next in the West, we go to the Houston Rockets. All right, Houston very, very busy, very busy this off season. Um it’s keeping Jabari Smith and Jan Tate and Jeff Green and Aaron Holidayiday and Fred Van Vleet and Steven Adams. I mean, they were active in keeping what they know is a good thing to get him to the two seed and now hopefully advance even farther in the playoffs this next year. Um, they did add Dorian Finny Smith. They did add Clint Capella. Uh, but the the big the biggest move is Kevin Durant. I mean, getting Kevin Durant as a future Hall of Famer, one of the games, great still with still with the stuff to help carry the team at times to be the last shot guy. He’s kind of, you know, when they added Van Vleet and Dylan Brooks, they kind of needed grown-ups on this young team. Now, they need a dude, and they’ve got one in Kevin Durant. Even if he’s Well, I I don’t want to say his game has dropped yet. it really hasn’t. Um I don’t think that’s fair to say to him. He’s still very consistently productive. It’s just if he stays healthy and if he does, there’s no reason to think that Kevin Durant won’t average 25 points or more. And then you see him around guys like Almond Thompson and some of the other young players, Shangun, that they’re really excited about building around. I like Houston a lot. I like Houston in their offseason moves. All right, the Clippers. Uh they were able to uh resign a couple, but their their moves of getting Bradley Beal, John Collins, and Brook Lopez are are their biggest moves. And this is a team that I think has all the parts. I really do. I like their coaching staff. I like their offense and defense. I think they’ve got playoff experience. They’re just the headscratcher to me on why they haven’t done better. I don’t know if it’s been the playoff matchup. They always are end up in good series, but don’t seemingly get through. Maybe it’s it’s hardened doesn’t have enough. Um Kawaii does, but adding Beal, adding Brook Lopez, adding John Collins, they’re going to look a little different. They’re bigger and this is a big team and their depth is is really good. It’s to me their question will be their age and will their age and experience be more of a help or will that age show up in injuries more and be a detriment to the team? That’s the question. Lakers. Uh, not a ton of of offseason work, but a few things. Sometimes it’s about keeping your own and they did in Jackson Hayes. They got from the Kings. We know that. Jake Laravia, DeAndre Aton. Uh, I think Eightton will be the one that’ll be the most important. Obviously, they’re still on the heels of the Luca deal and what he means to the team. Him and LeBron, another full season together. Those two guys are obviously dynamic. But if DeAndre Aton can get back to a form of, you know, a consistent double double, which I believe he can, and not take plays off, not seem disinterested, like he’s got to be really focused. And if he is, you know, the Lakers, they’ll be a problem, too, as they generally are every year. All right, the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis was one of the teams, again, kind of like we said about the Warriors, who haven’t been that active because of the first and second apron and some of the restrictions they have. The Memphis Grizzlies did a move that caught a lot of people off guard when they their biggest offseason move was moving Desmond Bane in that trade. And I think they got to a spot where they knew they were going to extend Jiren Jackson Jr. They’re already paying John Morant and they didn’t want to get into that tier of, hey, we’re going to pay three highlevel players, which they all were highle players, but it didn’t feel like they were championship caliber. And so that’s tough to get into that paying three guys that way. So the Bane trade was their biggest move of the offseason. We’ll see if kind of the additions of um what came back in the trade for Bane uh in KCP adding Tai Jerome keeping a few other guys if it’s enough to kind of keep that organization which always when they’re healthy seemingly is just a tough team to beat. Um as we move on Minnesota didn’t do a lot of adding. They did lose a couple things to Nquille. Alexander Walker did keep guys on extension. So, they’ve kind of stood pat um at the moment. We’ll still wait and see what their next big move is. New Orleans uh lost out on a couple guys in McCullum in a trade. Bruce Brown, Kelly Oolen. I did add Jordan Pool, Cavon Looney, Sadi Bay, and resigned Herb Jones. I still think this is a team that a few people are sleeping on uh based on last year’s performance. But the whole thing is if Zion is healthy and he was for the most part last year, they just were watching his minutes and you get a few other guys back. I also think that won’t be an easy team to beat consistently. The Thunder, their moves were keeping their guys and paying guys extensions and that’s all they really had to do. That’s still the best team going in the Western Conference. We talked about Phoenix already a little bit on what they lost out on and which is a lot. They’re kind of reshaping their team. Portland not that active but one trade moving Anthony Simons and getting Drew Holiday. Uh also I guess losing out on DeAndre Aton on that buyout. Kings biggest move I would say would at this point is adding Shruder andor what we look to see here in these draft picks that look pretty promising. Uh the uh the Spurs, their most important and key moves, I would say, would be adding Luke Cornet and Kelly Olen. And then the last team to talk about is the Utah Jazz, which are kind of just doing this overhaul, moving out of John Collins, uh Collins Ston, Jordan Clarkson, and adding names like Kevin Love, uh Kyle Anderson, and Yousef Nerkach. I think it’s a long year ahead for the Utah Jazz. Cap Trust counts among its clients numerous pro athletes and pro sports franchises, but most importantly serves many Northern Californians through a comprehensive financial planning. Here’s Kelly Brothers. Oh, that’s right. It is time for sports business with our guy, Kelly Brothers. Love the hat. That is the homage to the first ever game in Sacramento with our athletics. Kelly, looking good. How you feeling today? I’m feeling good, man. I’m feeling good. Even I mean it it it almost feels uh I don’t know after this date, it almost feels like summer speeds up. It just kind of we’re running downhill toward football season, but anyway, it’ll be here soon. And I know we just had, you know, the All-Star game kind of signifies that to me as well. We I thought it was a pretty good All-Star game. What was your overall uh kind of thoughts in the on the Midsummer Classic? Well, well, if um you know, first of all, congratulations to Brent Rooker. Yes. I think uh you know, one of the few major leaguers who actually has a residence in Sacramento. We’re going to give him his full props for what he did during the game and in the home run swing off or what he I think he had two out of three, right? Y I think he had two. So, congratulations to him quitting himself exceptionally well. Uh you know, uh I I I’m fine with them. They need they need to try new stuff. They need to make it more exciting. They need to take a little time out of the game. So, and you know, if you look at other All-Star games, I mean, the NFL’s has basically just disappeared. Uh, you know, the the NBA uh kind of I I don’t kind of blah. Um but uh you know they I I think they did fine given the but you know given the fact that you know with full full consciousness about the fact that there’s absolutely nothing else going on at this time of year except for the All-Star game. Although the weather is good so people don’t mind being outside and playing tennis or golf or going for a walk or doing whatever else. But overall they did fine. I what what I kind of you know I go back to Atlanta first of all. I’m I’m happy for Atlanta. I think it was unjust when they pulled the All-Star game from Atlanta. And of course, none of that election law has changed. You know, they just decided, okay, we’ll go back to Atlanta. And and that also, Jason, prompted one of the great news conference questions ever asked of Rob Manfred back when they pulled the game from Atlanta because of an election law. Well, out of protest, sir, are you going to give up your membership at Augusta National? He he coughed on his coffee on that one and said, “Uh, no, no, I’m not going to do that.” But, uh, I’m happy for Atlanta. And by the way, great article in the journal this year uh this week about what Atlanta has done. I mean, they have created what a lot of people want to create, that battery park. We’re talking they have a music venue, a 10-creen movie theater, retail, restaurant, office, residential, uh major companies have put their hubs there at Battery Park. So, last year, uh they had 9 million people visit Battery Park, which is triple, more than triple, who actually attended a game. So, uh they they’ve really done a nice job in Atlanta with that. The other thing I wanted to mention, you know, the balls and strikes. Yes. I we’re headed there. I mean, why would we not head there? I just wish there was a green light and a red light and they keep the umpire behind on plate, but he sees a green light or a red light and, you know, calls balls or strikes and re, you know, if he thinks it’s a a strike, but it hits red, he needs to rethink that um obviously and um and just call it a ball. So, I think we’re headed there. But I hope to keep the umpires in the game. Yeah, my observation of that, I mean, one, it’s the All-Star game, so they’re having some fun with it. There was literally some funny scenarios where I think it was Arosa Raina, they challenged one of his and he struck out to end the inning on a you know a replay like that but uh and everybody’s kind of laughing and you know it’s light-hearted but uh the execution of it Kelly was great and the other thing the other observation I had is the best people at the strike zone seem to be the players because everyone they challenged they got right. They know the strike zone. You’re right. You you’re absolutely right. And you know what and and no shame at all on the umpires. These were all balls literally millimeters from the strike zone. So it also I think went to show how good they are at what they do. But you know at the same time every ump has a has a different uh strike zone. Uh and as some of the older umps as as it gets to the seventh and eighth inning, you know, their strike zone might change slightly if they’re not calling the low strike. So I I think we’re headed that way. Um, you know, I think we’re we saw it at Wimbledon last week as well with the way they’re using technology there now calling ball and it’s not a matter of fact it’s the exact same technology. Yeah. Blackhawk that that is being used uh for for baseball to try it out. So I was fine with I’m fine with using it as uh an experiment kind of a laboratory using the All-Star game as a lab to try out different things. You know, one other thing at least on uh from Rob Manfred in baseball, I guess he he had come out along the lines here during this time where he’s gathered around media and said um you know, before the A’s get to Las Vegas, you know, there have been some rumors like will they stay in Sacramento? Will there be a move? He said, “No, there’s no plans, no intentions of them being anywhere else but Vegas ultimately when they get there.” I I don’t know. We’re we’re we’ve had a few more months. We’ve had the A’s play here. you still think Vegas or at this point do you think Kelly it would be a lock? Is it happening? Like kind of how do you think this will all shake out? Uh I I think in their heart of hearts um you know I think if if uh in baseball I think what would happen is um I think it would not be unlike what just happened in Tampa Bay. Jason I I I think they would love to force the current ownership of the A’s out. Yeah. They don’t have the, you know, first of all, they’re not seen as being a very good owner. We think, you know, those in Northern California think they’re a terrible owner. Uh, but secondly, they don’t have the deep pockets that baseball wants in its owners so they can do developments like we saw in Atlanta. Uh, so they can uh, you know, so so that it’s not an issue where you have to sell a piece of your team to fund your next stadium, which is basically what’s going on with the athletics right now. Yeah. So, I I think they’d love to force him out, but they can’t yet. And if he sells a part of his team, of course, you know, people think, “Oh, but it’s valued at well, first of all, he’s valuing the team too high. And secondly, if you’re not getting any control and you have no liquidity, you’re you’re asking for a big discount on whatever the price is for 20% of the team or 10% of the team.” And um so I I still don’t know if he’s going to end up in Vegas or not. Yes, they’ve broken ground. That doesn’t mean anything. They don’t have the financing in place yet to complete that stadium. Look, your background is is would be to advise and to help people financially. It like I’m trying, Kelly, honestly, to see this from Fischer’s perspective and I know there’s pride, there’s ego here, too. It just a perfect world. They get everything done and it gets to Vegas in three years from now or whatever the timetable is. Is that ultimately end up going to be a financial win for him? It feels like that there’s a lot of stuff going on, but from what he went through to what they’re going through to getting to there that financially, is that something you would advise him to do? Um, you know, I I think you have to look at um let’s go back to this, Jason. I’d love your opinion on this. In the end, was the move to Vegas good or bad for the Raiders? I would say for the Raiders, it’s probably been good. I think I I I agree. I I agree. Not only that, it offered up a, you know, it gave Vegas a new venue the size of which they did not have, you know, for for for stadium type concerts. Sure. Something they did not attract before then. Um, and it and it was nicely, you know, kind of folded in with Mandalay Bay and the other the other hotels around there. So, um, you know, I I just think he is I I don’t know. I he just seems so disliked. And I don’t know if it’s just because I’m in Northern California and you hear the And you hear the belly aching from Oakland fans and you hear the belly aching from Sacramento people who think, you know, boy, we just got a red-headed stepchild of a of a of a team. I mean, even, you know, anyone will tell you that in Sacramento in the higher levels of finance or government, we really don’t want the A’s in John Fiser. we just want to prove we’re a major league team to maybe get an expansion team with a real owner. So I I I don’t know. I you know he just doesn’t have the respect um of of of anyone at this time. I don’t know if Vegas is going to be his salve or not. I don’t know if people will go in the numbers he’s thinking of to but of course I haven’t seen the ballpark yet and and I really I don’t have a sense of where it is on the strip uh in terms of getting people just to kind of drop in. Yeah. As we’re talking with Kelly Brothers talking sports business. I know we just uh we talked a little bit about Wimbledon and their their same kind of stuff that uh you know could measure inbounds out of bounds and faults and all that kind of stuff or or I should say for tennis. Um but you know the tournament also wrapped up another one of their majors there. So so much history and tradition there. I’m just curious your thoughts on just kind of how that all played out at women. No, you know uh Jason, you know, it’s foreign to us as a sporting event, you might say. Um I mean to see people in suits and ties and very well-dressed going to games eating strawberries and cream that all seems very foreign to us, but you know it is very much like the Masters. You don’t see advertising. you don’t. It’s all about Wimbledon. It’s all about the fan experience. And I just uh you know, the one thing I’d point out is for that men’s final uh which is great tennis. And it I mean I I don’t just completely supports the idea that these tennis players are incredible athletes, the ones at the very top of their game, obviously like Sinner and Alcaros. But um but the getin price was $20,000. Getin price. The get in price to the men’s final was $20,000 on the day of the final. Yeah, I was just I I’ve never been. I I always thought because I’ve watched it since I was a kid. I’ve I’ve had different loves for tennis at different times. Sometimes you it cools. Right now I like this potential rivalry. These two guys are great. It looks like they got a good future ahead. I go that’d be kind of cool one day to go to Wimbledon. Then you just said $20,000 and I’m like, “Oh, well that’s it.” Yeah. Now you can get into the complex for less than that. I don’t even know if there’s something else going on on that day with regard to a a doubles match or a mixed doubles match in one of the other courts. And it is I I went one day when I was a teenager. My uncle took me who lived in London. Um but you know um it uh it’s it’s fantastic. Wimbledon is a Wimbledon’s a cool neighborhood of London. It’s but but the get in price for that game I mean but but anyone who’s anyone in Britain wants to go to it, you know. Yes. And and and that switches year to year. There are some years where uh it it will be more expensive to go to the women’s final, right? The ladies final at Pardon me. That’s the other thing. You know, it’s funny how Wimbledon and the Masters both have a certain language they want you to adhere to. Yeah. They’re not fans, they’re patrons, right? It’s not women’s final, it’s ladies final or the gentleman’s final. Gentleman’s final. Quiet. It’s all very civilized, but boy, it’s great sport when it’s right. Yeah. And I still remember as a kid when Boris Becker came out of nowhere as a 17year-old to beat up on all who everyone thought were were were players who were going to just smoke him and he won the whole thing. And um so it’s still it’s still a great spectacle, I think. Yeah, he was diving all over the court. I remember like this guy’s diving for tennis ball. It was great. I love seeing what an experience that you went. How cool was that? Uh yeah, it was uh fortunate. My uncle was a huge tennis fan and he like I said, he lived in London. So I mean the the grounds are beautiful and you can get some great tennis, you know, on some of the outer courts. Um but man, they have built it up not unlike we’ve done with uh and I’ve never I got to admit I’ve never been to the US Tennis Center uh in Flushing, New York, where they’re going to hold where they hold the US Open every year, but um and that’s a great spectacle as well. I I I need to look that up. I don’t know what the get in price for the men’s final is at the US Open, but I’ll figure it out. Not 20,000. I can tell you that. I don’t think so. At least. Yeah. All right, Kelly. Well, thank you very much. Have a great week. Uh we’ll talk to you next Thursday. Thanks, Jason. Yeah. Thank you. That is Kelly Brothers giving us some insight on sports biz 20,000. The getin price. What are we doing? Oh man, I’m out of cash. I’ll take two. Give me two. I’m coming in. I’m in. Good gosh. How do we get to these sporting events? It’s incredible. All right, much more to come, including at the top of the hour. Let’s jump into the Kings as they complete the 4-0 sweep of their Las Vegas schedule. Have some uh postgame reaction from Coach Dip. Also from Isaac Jones, who had another game, Isaiah Stevens, who’s trying to get attention to with the big squad who did some nice things in the point guard spot. That’s coming up at 8. Much more of the show as we continue right here on Sack Town Sports. But you might hear when listening to a Sacramento Kings game. Out of Keegan going for another triple. Man, is he feeling it? Um, we don’t have a lot of time in this segment. So, at the top of the hour, I do want to remind you that we are going to um get into the Kings because another victory yesterday. Four wins, zero losses. They’ve completed their summer league schedule and we’re going to get some uh reaction from those that were never lost. They have never ever lost. Um, and they’ve looked great. They really have. And different pieces have looked great. But we’re gonna hear from Isaac Jones who had a good game yesterday. Oh, I remember that. We didn’t get to use that enough, but you really like that one. I did. That was one of your faves. Um Isaiah Stevens on our trip. Uh, we happened to have been listening to that album on one of our longer drives and the person that had it on their Spotify got a message of you’re in the top 2% of listening to Aqua. Um, and then Depes Mystery, we’ll hear from him. I’m looking forward to this year of Kings Rewind because um, you know, we got Doug involved what around late December. Yeah, right after Christmas or so when the Kings made the move. But basically on rewind and anything referenced to Doug, it’s it’s Pulp Fiction, right? That’s kind of your go-to. Yeah. Yeah. Keegan is the guy from Captain Holt from Brooklyn 999. Uh Sabonis was his song. Yes. Dear was a song. Dear was the song from uh Monk was the pizza guy. I’m a pizza guy. Um I did. We have one for Zach by the end of the year. I don’t really know that we did. Yeah. Oh, Zack. Aine. Um, duh. Uh, let’s see. We have the meats for Valenunis, which he’s gone. Um, I don’t think Lorravia had one. Oh, yeah. Loravia had one. What? I That wasn’t his. You just wanted to play that. Um, you did have I like Trey Lyles. What you had for Trey. Do you have that handy? Uh, or am I testing the limits here? I don’t I don’t know what you mean. Like what are you testing the like you’re asking for? Who for you know the guy that would come off the bench and provide a spark and help out the team? And Trey Lyles. Trey Lyles. Is he still play for the Kings? Well, at the moment he’s No, but you you played you played actually two different things for Trey. Do you remember what you would play? Of course you do. I remember one of them, but I think you’re talking about this was my favorite one. He wasn’t unlike you, Rebel. And to me, he’s our greatest Canadian. That’s the one I was thinking of and then I realized Trey, you also had that one. We need another Canadian on the team. Yeah. All right. Well, speaking of Canadians, nice segue here. Uh, last night we mentioned the ESBs were were going on. Shane Gillis was the host. This is part of his monologue and he talked about this Canadian SGA is here. Give it up for SGA. Hell yeah, bro. And now everybody sitting around him is in foul trouble. All right. He had this one about uh Shadore Sanders from Colorado, son of Dion. Shador Sanders had his jersey number retired at Colorado this year. And people are saying it’s because of nepotism, because of his father. And it’s not. It’s because he went 13 and 12 over his career and he almost won the Alamo Bowl. Definitely not nepotism, right? All right. Uh, let’s see what else. We got a couple other here from him. This one, um, okay, here’s one that he dropped on everybody. Fourtime WNBA all-star Britney Hicks is here. Give it up for Britney, everybody. I’m uh I’m joking around. That’s my friend’s wife. I knew none of you knew WNBA players. It literally just showed someone in the audience and then his friend was just cracking up next to next to that lady. But yeah, it was all right. It was an all right monologue. But if you had a chance to check it out, uh we also got one more here from SB’s host Shane Gillis. The New York Knicks had a great season. Uh yeah, hell yeah. Carl Anthony Towns is here. Hey girl. Yeah, he had some others. Uh some hits, some misses, I would say for sure. Uh he got me out a good one. There was one said something about Aaron Rogers that was good. Um so yeah, anyway, SBS were last night. Um no love for the Kings, understandably. They didn’t have a lot uh lot to be on there, nor should they have been, but we will be talking about them when we come back because we’re going to talk about what the Kings have done so far in Las Vegas in summer league. And the goal was to be uh champs. Well, they did their part yesterday by getting their fourth win, completing the summer portion of their schedule, the the the schedule they were given out by the league, the four games that everybody is guaranteed. Everybody will get a fifth game for the teams that don’t make the final four. Um, and then the Kings are hoping to be one of those teams. We’ll tell you what they need to do. We’ve got that coming up. And we’re going to get another day of assessment, another day of reaction to watching Isaac Jones, watching Devin Carter, watching Nick Clifford and Maxim Reno. Kind of the key pieces to what we wanted to see out of Vegas. We’ll share you our thoughts from that after they beat the Cavs yesterday. We’ll do all that as we begin the 8:00 hour. That’s your leaderboard update. Now, back to you, Jason. Hey, thanks. Appreciate that. Uh, so there you go. We’re gonna have constant updates for you on what’s going on at the British Open. What’s going on in Las Vegas is the Sacramento Kings, that’s what’s going on. Winners again, yesterday, they took out the Cleveland Cavaliers. 9486 was the final. Um, point differential will be a factor in this, and we’ll explain that as we go along. But as far as the Kings go and played, shot the ball well from the floor, not very well from three, though they got better as the game went along. Uh did not rebound very well, especially what was the final. Yeah, 23 offensive rebounds, 10 by uh Naquin Tomlin. One guy specifically for the Cavs was just torturing the Kings. But now, let’s talk about the guys that were actually on the floor that we’re going to be hoping that will contribute to the Kings uh this next season. Uh Isaac Jones, who we know is under contract, really solid performance, eight of 11, did miss his two corner threes, but uh 17 points, three rebounds, got a block. And Isaac Jones, I’ve been talking about him in the sense that he is an effort, energy, hustle guy. And when you’re thinking about him, he’s got to continue to play that way because he’s not a guy that Yeah. has a spark. There’s definitely a spark uh with him. He’s a guy that has to doesn’t get his own. Let’s put it that way. That he, you know, he’s reliant on others to help him out, but that’s okay. That’s what his role is going to be. He was one of the bright spots in last year’s Vegas Summer League and certainly shows that there’s there’s a spot for him and just where will the minutes come? But you hope that he’s a guy you can count on in a team that’s trying to play a lot of players. Uh, another guy that’s in that spot is returning and is getting more and more reps is Devin Carter. Uh, Carter didn’t shoot the ball as efficiently. Game two and game three, he was incredible as far as his efficiency. His final line, three of nine, um, one of six from three, made uh, all but one of his free throws. Did have a balanced attack, five boards. He’s a really good rebounder, six assists. Um, did have four turnovers, had a block. Still, to me, Devin Carter’s best spot is he’s he can defend. No questions there. I think he will cause havoc on the defensive end. He he’s just around the ball. He’s got a nose for the ball. His intensity, his competitiveness. I like he checks a lot of boxes. I just don’t I don’t think he checks the point guard box. Um can they play him in the position? Sure. But I don’t think that’s a position of strength. I still kind of like him off the ball. I think when he creates it’s more so for himself and not meaning that in a selfish way. I just think sometimes point guards innate abilities and instincts are I might go to create for myself but I also am putting enough pressure on the defense where by by the moves I made or by the pressure I put on them by a dribble by a spin move by an attack of the lane by getting to the paint I’m collapsing things and I’m finding other people. Carter does that to some extent, but more of it is done for his own game, and that’s okay, but that’s primarily a combo guard or a guard off the ball. And I think that suits him better, me personally. Um, then you get to the guys that, you know, you’re either two ways like Dylan Cardwell, who still is that kind of physical, d tough defensive interior guy, and then Isaiah Stevens, I thought when he ran the point, they were more effective. I just that’s kind of been the case in person or um watching it on TV like yesterday. The rookies Isaiah um excuse me uh Maxim Reno Maxim Reno uh 10 points, five boards, two assists, three blocks. I like that number. Did have six fouls. You get 10 in Vegas. Um his best game still was game one for me, though he’s been good. Looks the part and um just needs to keep working and getting better. And I love the fact that he came back and played after missing the last game. and he talked about it in the in-game interview about the importance of trying to win a championship. So, he is one of the guys that’s showing that that focus of trying to win this thing. And then Nick Clifford saved him for last. Uh Nick’s final stat line in 31 minutes. Remember, he didn’t have I think he only had about three to five points at the half. Ended with 19 on eight of 15, seven boards, nine assists, only one turnover. Um, I’m just liking him more and more and more every time I watch him. I just think he’s so composed. Um, the Swiss Army knife has been the label and it fits his versatility. He could be put in a lot of different spots, guard a lot of different positions, play a lot of different offensive positions, be an attack guy, be a creator, be um a part of the offense, rebounder, defender. There there to me is a lot to like about N Clifford and again smallalish sample size but was a good college player. The more I watch him the more I like and I’m sure Doug Christie and the staff is feeling the same way. So, um, as far as what they need to have happen, well, here’s the situation right now for the Sacramento Kings, and we’ll get into this a little bit more, too, uh, coming up, but, uh, 4-0 as one of the 4-0 teams. And now they are ahead at this point of Minnesota, who also went to 4-0, but they’ve got a better point differential. Oklahoma City is 4-0. Their point differential is at 14.8. So, they’re a team above the Kings. So, as of now, it looks pretty good for the Thunder, pretty good for the Kings. The Timberwolves may be at 4-0. There are five other teams that are 3-0. Charlotte, the Clippers, the Spurs, the Raptors, and the Hawks. They all play today, including the Spurs that are playing the uh Hornets. So, one of them will lose obviously, and that team will be eliminated. But where will the Kings end up? Their goal is to be one of the final four. And so, uh, they’ll do scoreboard watching today. We will check that out. First, let’s hear some postgame reaction though from the guys that that got involved yesterday. We’re going to start with Isaiah Stevens, the guy that came off the bench, I thought played well as a distributor. We’ve talked about this before, whether it’s with Bob Gerald or just our own observations. When you’re in summer league, you need a point guard out there. Even if it’s a guy that, you know, won’t be on the big club. Um, just someone that’s got experience and can get people involved. I know Dallas to me was using Cooper Flag in that role and I don’t know that it best suits him, but it shows his versatility. Some teams just don’t function as well when they can’t really get their offense going. But Stevenson has done a nice job with that. He was talking to the media after the game yesterday. Here are his thoughts. Um, obviously 4 and0 for you guys. That defensive identity seems to be coming up big. What do you think was working well tonight? Uh, I think like you said, we knew it was going to be a tough game, especially coming out playing in the morning, but uh, we’re going to have to bring our own energy and I feel like we did that for parts of the game. Uh, definitely could have been better. Uh, but for the most part, we leaned into what our identity is, and that’s just pressuring, making them feel us, trying to make the game ugly at times, and so far we did that. That could have been better. What you feel like could have been cleaned up? I just feel like different times in communication aspects and we’re still getting to know each other. So, things that you would typically clean up like in practice settings, we’re trying to do on the fly. And so that’s like the beauty of summer league because it really makes you have to pour together if you want to find success. And uh we’ve been doing a great job of that, but obviously we’re chasing like a really big goal and so we’re gonna have to clean up some of our communication mistakes, but that’s basketball though. Yeah, a really cohesive group. You’ve been out in summer league before. Just what what do you make of how quickly this group is all connected? Yeah, man. This just reminds me of the team I was on last year. A little bit different, but I think we just all gravitated towards each other very fast. We all started pulling in one direction. We all want to win. Obviously, you want to showcase your skills, but I think winning gives you the best opportunity and platform to do that. And so, by us buying in to the culture and buying into what our coaches are preaching, I feel like a lot of us are starting to reap the benefits. Sure. You going to close the game out there? Um, what’s your evaluation been of just your game so far? How are how are you feeling? Yeah, man. I’m just trying to do whatever is asked of me. Come in, be a point guard, be a best uh energy guy off the bench. Come in and just take care of the ball as well and make shots if it’s for me. Uh, I feel like I can play multiple roles. Uh, if I need to score, if I need a playmate, just defend, that’s what I’m in there to do. Uh, anything to help the team win, that’s what I’m gonna do. And obviously you’re familiar with NE. Has anything out here surprising you? You’ve seen this all before? N man, I’ve seen it all before. Uh, but I just love seeing the confidence. Like, obviously, you don’t know what you don’t know. Stepping into these new uh into these new gyms with new jerseys and everything, new level. He’s doing the same exact thing that I saw every day back in Fort Collins. And I’m so happy to see that for him because I know how much time and effort he puts into his game. So, uh, hopefully we keep it going and it’ll be a lot more to come. What do you think makes him talented and successful as like a iso creator? We’re seeing that a lot tonight. I think Kings fans might be a little bit more new to that, but some face up, rip through. What do you think makes him talented? I think his pace more so than anything, his start, his stop, slow to fast, fast to slow. I think he knows obviously what he’s going to do better than anybody else. And so once you really start to dial into that, you become a really hard player to stop. Yeah. Especially as a playmaker with yourself, what’s it like playing with these bigs? You got a lot of dynam dynamic guys with Max and Isaac. I think it makes it easier on all the guards. Like it’s not as much pressure to make every single play because we can throw it to them, let them be creators. Uh and then we can just play off one another. And I think that’s definitely opened up the floor for us and giving us a chance to put points on the board. You also been out there playing a lot with Mason and Deon, just me, a lot of other playmakers. What’s it been like kind of finding your game, playing with another Yeah, man. And like I said, it was a little bit different obviously than the previous team I was on. But those are some really good players uh who are going to be in this league for a long time. So just trying to make their lives easier has always kind of been my niche. Uh whether that’s on the ball, off the ball, uh like I said, on both ends of the floor, just trying to do what I can beauty. Is this could you just expound on that? Does it remind you of your AA days? Yeah, a little bit. but also understanding that we’re all trying to take our next step in our individual journeys, but the best way to do that is coming together. So, the so far I’ve been a part of two teams that have really come together uh and so far won a ton of games and I think my experience, it might not be that way for everybody, but so far my experience has been pretty cool. And on the importance of just staying ready for those opportunities, can you just talk about what you learned from maybe those a gummy worms? Yeah. Yeah. No gummy worms anymore, man. A lot of food, a lot of just protein packed meals, a lot of carbs the night before. Staying hydrated. Our team is doing a great job of providing us with everything we need. Yeah. A few questions about Las Vegas with your time here at Summer League and coming here with CSU. Just what would you make of Las Vegas potential expansion? Uh I’ve been out here a ton. Uh played a lot of basketball here. Uh it’s been fun. Uh obviously I’m out here on business trips majority of the time, so my experience might be a little bit different, but uh I know it’s hot for sure. That’s one. So, you definitely got to stay off your feet, stay hydrated, but uh it’s been cool, man. I always viewed it as a place that a lot of people come to enjoy the game. Got to wait and see what’s going on with point differential, but looking forward to a chance to compete for that championship. Absolutely, man. Uh we did our part. Hopefully, we could uh have won a few more games by more points, but that’s just the way the game goes sometimes, man. We did our job. We went four and0. Hopefully, we get a chance to play uh for a championship, but uh you just kind of got to let the chips fall where they may at this point. I like when here in Stevens I mean he said the very first comment I think Brendan asked the first introductory question he’s like look we are chasing a really big goal. So they went there with a goal of winning the summer league championship. And again there might be some of you out there go big deal who who cares. It’s just the summer league. That’s fine. And that may be your mentality. The point is it’s not their mentality. these guys, most of them, most of the roster either won’t be NBA players or won’t be on the Kings. The the majority of it, but the guys that we’ve been talking about will be and have a chance to be. And that group has been playing at a level that I’m sure Doug Christie and Scott Perry want the big team to do where there’s been a consistent pickup level full court. There’s been an a consistent intensity on the defensive end. Uh the offense has been sharp moving it, sharing it. I mean, these are all attributes to me that one are appealing to watch. Even if it’s summer league, even if it, you know, there’s it’s not the largest of crowds and you don’t know the competition you’re playing in. These are winning habits in winning ways that they’re building. And it doesn’t mean it will carry over full force to the team, but it can. And we always talk about how veterans can help guide the young players and and teach them the ways of the league, which is true, but you also can have a little bit of a a reverse scenario that happens where there’s just an influx of excitement, youthful, um that enthusiasm that that new players can come into the league with that might revitalize and recharge the veterans. To the point, I talked about it earlier about the Warriors last year where this is a championship caliber team. they know what it takes to win a championship and they weren’t feeling it. And then all of a sudden they get in Jimmy Butler wasn’t a young guy but a veteran who then just by his presence all of a sudden they had just a different look at it and a different vibe and it completely changed. So I don’t know if that will happen directly. I was glad to see D. Rozan was at the game checking it out, watching his uh hopefully soon to be uh teammates here and these guys can make an impact with their performance and all of a sudden get on the floor and you’re going, “Well, I didn’t think these rookies were going to play much or these secondyear guys, but boom, here they are and they’ve made an impact and that we like their style and their energy and all that stuff and then here they are.” So, another one of those guys is uh Isaac Jones. And Isaac Jones yesterday had a good game as we mentioned. Here he is postgame with the media. No regrets not wearing the mask. Feeling all right. N cuz I can’t really see you with the mask. So, no matter took some hits, but I’ll be all right. Um how what’s your evaluation just been of this team? Obviously, you guys are sitting here 4 and0. That defensive identity, how much do you feel like playing into that has factored into the successor? Uh, I think we’re really special. Uh, guy 1 through 15, we can all impact the game, especially defensively. Uh, we we definitely I don’t think we better our guys still. Like, we gave way too many offensive rebounds. Like, I think if we had that under control, we probably would have won the game by a lot more. Uh, they had a lot of second chance points. But besides that, you know, I love this team. I love every dude. And I think it was special. But with those offensive rebounds, where do you see that could have been cleaned up a little bit? I think we were just we were trying to box out but we were just too too deep in you know long shots long rebounds so uh just probably more more urgency we would have got it and you were locked in early got got rolling. Was there anything specific in this game or you just kind of feeling it out as you’re going? Uh I think I was just feeling it out as I was going. I realized they didn’t want to run with me so I tried to get on the rim as much as possible and it just worked out. did talk about, you know, they’re they’re moving like playing with moving you to the floor a little bit and part of that is sprinted to corners instead of maybe sprinting to the rim, but obviously you’re still balancing both. What’s that and like uh it’s kind of hard sometimes because, you know, like I like dunking. So, the first thing I think is like, man, focus on that rim. But, um, it’s cool because when I do my job and sprint to the corner, you know, opens up the game for everybody. So, I’m getting used to it and I’m still trying to figure out how to be effective with it. And I think today I was. So, and then playing alongside Max, you guys almost both get to work as the four or five. What’s that been like for you? Nice. Yeah, he’s real skilled. Um, so it’s easy like uh we could just switch whenever. Like if if I’m the first one down, I can play in, he can play out. So it’s it’s a nice little flow to it. Did you know about Max before with coach? Yeah. And I played him uh the year before. So yeah, I knew everything about Max. Anything stand out to you different being around him? Uh he’s he’s funny. I didn’t think he’s going to be funny, but then I think he’s just funny. You should hear some of the stuff he says. We got any funny stories? So like he doesn’t stay, bro. just walk up to me like you’re a good dog. Just stop. But now he’s a character, man. I love him. Okay, for sure. And then how are you getting to know Meek? Obviously, he’s balling out there. You’re seeing some of the offer creation. What are your impressions of him then? Yeah, he’s really skilled. Uh, really confident and especially when he’s when he’s aggressive. You see he can just take over the game. So, no, he’s definitely special. I think we got a steel picking him and he’s just a good person. So, he’s cool to be around. What’s it been like working with Dip? I know you were familiar with him before. What do you think the job he’s done? No, that’s my guy. So it’s like easy to listen to him. Uh very like he’s very easy to understand like we want to buy into him because everybody loves him and stuff. But now that’s my play coach. So we we’ve been tight ever since last year. So it’s cool to see him coach and uh take a a leadership role. And that defensive identity being the big thing for you guys. Sounds like that’s obviously going to trans um as well. Just how much do you think you’ve been playing into that and how have you been working with that? Um I definitely got to get better. I don’t think I played my best defense here. Uh, but with my length and athleticism, I should be able to buy into it easily, you know, affect the games and just when I get in just cause havoc. So, you and are both kind of both energy guys. What is what have you kind of told me about, you know, how to how to fill that role? Uh, for him, I said every rebound should be yours. Like big strong dude, 610, 611 and, uh, he has a high motor and he’s always going to continue to get a better motor and that’s what’s going to take him to the next level. I feel like we’re different types of energy. like I’m probably more offensive than him, but we compliment each other so it’s cool. Being able to run the floors big, is that something that you’ve always done or was there a coach at some point that encouraged you to start doing that more? And obviously it’s one of your strengths. Definitely my junior college coach started all the way back there. Um he was just telling me to take my game to the next level. So that’s what was installed to just run the floor and uh you know once I get in better better better shape, better game shape, want to eat harder and then uh create more opportunities for me. We started off laughing about, you know, is the basic you just mentioned, taking care of your body. What have you learned a pro, taking care of your body, nutrition, getting ready for these games and these opport it’s it’s a long season. Uh, that’s what I learned to go. So, like some people are going to play sometimes and you never know when you’re never going to be called up. So, every day is important. You got to watch what I eat, make sure I get these restaurants and all that. You never know when your opportunity is. Thanks, guys. Appreciate you. All right, that’s Isaac Jones. And you know, last year got a taste, right? 40 games that he played for the Kings. Let’s go back to Isaac’s numbers. Played about, oh, the averages here, 7 minutes a game when he did play. Um, field goal percentage, uh, let’s see what he shot from the floor. 65%. A lot of that’s around the rim. Um, free throw percentage at 64%. a board and a half a game, three assists, uh, three and a half points. I doesn’t get a lot of run, a lot of time, but now with what we believe will be a departure of Trey Lyles, Valenunis is no longer there. You’ve got some Eubanks in in the front court, you’ve got Maxim Reno, who’s a rookie in the front court. Um, he feels like a guy that’s probably the best true four on the team. now he won’t be a starter but there there is some developing that he’s done and that he’s going to have to continue to do but the work ethic is there the desire and and as he was asked there like he’s being asked to do a few different things here as far as sprinting to the corner um you know that’s differently than he’s been kind of a rim runner and a couple times yesterday he got the ball late in transition and was looking to create and then it’s like all right I’m just going to go right through everybody and dunk so he’s he’s really grown own and it’s been fun to watch his development and a guy that has helped him with that is Depes Mystery who during the season has worked with him now as a summer league coach and here’s coach Mystery after the Kings 4 and 0 start with that win yesterday. Closest one so far uh winning it with that defensive identity just what you kind of think of your guys’ performance. Thought it was going to be a fight. That’s a good team right there, you know, and they challenged us and we responded to the adversity and it was great. I thought it was amazing. I I like how they got challenged, but they when things went rough, they got together and I really really enjoyed watching that. It seemed like Nick specifically recognized those moments of when there’s big runs in this game and and stepped up. What do you think of his creation him recognizing and he knows it, he sees it, he feels it, he senses it, and guys know it, too. And he just he takes the ball and he makes things happens for everyone, you know, if it happens for himself, too. But I just like how he controlled the game. What do you think of his self-creation ability? You see him facing up some rip throughs, jumpers that touch in the mid round. Yeah. Yeah. I know. He’s got a variety of ways to score and a variety of positions to score from, you know, and it’s exciting is it’s difficult to guard. Yeah. And I think you held him below 40%, but there’s the turnovers, offensive rebounds. What do you feel like cleaned up there? Yeah, it’s the offensive rebounds. You know, they probably had over 20 second chance points. Um I think Tomlin had like seven offensive rebounds in the first half. That was like a major focal point. We got to hit somebody. A lot of their shots were coming from threes and it was long shots. You go long rebounds. So that ball was rolling everywhere, you know. So it was tough, but we had to put a put a bow in someone’s chest, you know, and create the umbrella and let the ball fall in front of us and go get it, you know. So we let a couple guys get loose and that’s where they got their offensive rebounds. Max back out there today. You’re seen him uh what what have you thought of his switchability? You’ve seen him go on to some guards there and what he thought of his first. No, I thought it was great. you know, he does a great job of communicating and keeping bodies on bodies and then when he switches, he’s really good, you know, because he keeps a hand up so guys won’t shoot on him, they see a contested three and he can contain and move his feet. He even picked up full court, you know, I love seeing that, you know, and that’s where we want to kind of just experiment and see what can he do, you know, and challenge him and he did. Isaiah Stevens closing the game out there instead of Crawford. What do you see from Isaiah? It’s just it’s just like when Isaiah’s out there, he’s a point guard, you know, and he can get us settled down. he can handle the pressure, put guys in the right spots. And I thought he was picking up really well. You know, I just felt like we needed that for this game to take care of the ball and we our goal is to always hold him under for ourselves under 15 turnovers. We had I think 14, but team 15. So, I thought that was our goal and we accomplished it. And four games under the belt, Devin, I know point guard by committee, but with Deon sort of leading the show there, what have you thought of the job he’s done? I thought he’s doing an excellent job, you know, and he’s attacking pressure when he needs to. He’s setting up guys when he needs to. He’s kicking it ahead when he needs to, you know, and his leadership in the timeouts. It’s been unreal. And Tyresese Proctor over on the other end had a big game. Obviously, you guys come away with the win, but how impressed were you with him? I’m very impressed. I mean, that guy is very talented, you know, and we known that. We saw him in the draft work, too. I was like, “Wow.” Um, but he he was really good. He had a great night, but we did a good job of trying to even it out. Still got to wait and see results and point differential, whatever the tie breakers are specific, but uh pretty excited for an opportunity to play for that championship. Yeah, I didn’t mention it to the team. I didn’t want them thinking about that. I just said, “Hey, get the win.” And then wherever the Chips land, the Chips land. What’ you think of Isaac’s impact in the first quarter, especially with the scoring back on the floor? Yeah, that’s a huge part I keep telling him like you like if you didn’t get the rebound, just run and then you’re a big target. So, we hit you and then it’s going to be very difficult for guys to stop at the rim because most of the time it’s a guard getting back. It’s not a big, right? So, it’s like 68 versus like a 65 guy. And I think that’s where our where his advantage is. how you see really together. Like two weeks ago, you guys were just kind of learning each other’s names. What do you kind of attribute the the togetherness to? Uh it’s just like the overall vibe. They they really like each other as a group, you know, and then when we’re at practice, they they’re coming early, they’re getting up shots, they’re they’re vibing with each other, and that that’s probably it, you know, and also winning does help, you know. How much do you feel like playing in into this defensive identity also helps guys for their translation to that next level? Yeah, it’s just like the the reality is if you want to make the NBA, right, you’re gonna have to play some defense right now. And for our team especially, that’s our mindset. That’s our that’s what we expect from every position. So these guys are playing it. They’re showing it and that’s what’s going to help them make that leap. Few questions. I just had a few questions kind of related to Las Vegas. you know, kind of talk about his expansion. Is you seeing here Vegas in the summer league and, you know, being around the NBA just how do you feel like Las Vegas and the possible expansion if the league were to go to 32? I mean, I think it’d be amazing. You know, Las Vegas got a great fan base. You saw it in the hockey, right, when they won I think they won a championship the first year and even with the uh the Ace, right? They got a great fan base. So, I think it’d be amazing to have the Vegas team over here, you know? Um just when we come play an away game here, we got to be careful. That’s the only problem. So, they might have the advantage on that one. Do you have do you have any like go-to spots, restaurants or activities or things like me to Vegas? Um, I usually do, but I’ve been pretty locked in and locked in my room for this because when you’re the head coach, you kind of have to like really dial in. But yeah, you know, we I took my family out to Italian restaurant the other night. It was really good. And yeah. Yeah. Coaches working. Come on. Coaches are always working. Hours change. That’s for sure. I think that’s the first realization from former players to coaches. They’re like, “Man, we thought we worked hard hours, long hours as athletes.” But coaches, it their job just never ever ends. But Coach Dip doing a nice job representing the Kings 4 and0. Now they do the scoreboard watching to see if uh they truly get into that final four that those other games are today and we’ll see. Uh they’re in good position like we said, but uh they needed a little good fortune as well today. All right, still to come in this half hour, who’s hot and who’s not. But when we come back, we’re going to check in with Garrett Johnston from Beyond the Clubhouse podcast. Day one at the British Open. He’s out there. Let’s see what’s going on. We’ve got that next. All right, show rolling right along here. Jason Ross, Christopher Lad, Carmichael Dave enjoying the last couple of days of his vacation. He’ll be back with us on Monday. Maybe. That’s what I was thinking. Maybe. Oh, I meant to say this one earlier as we uh await Garrett Johnston from the uh Clubhouse podcast out at the British Open. Uh where was this? Chris from our text line. And again, you can reach us at 9163391140. Uh, where was this? Where was this? Hey, Jason. This is random, but I love the sound bite. I hope so. It’s from rap artist Kodak Black and Verlad plays it sometimes on recaps. There you go. You got another one. You got another thumbs up for some of your clips. I hope so. See, that’s the point of this whole thing is like when you do it enough, like the show that it all originated from was the Jim Healey show that I heard years ago was talking about that you and I, Chris, kind of brainstorm, then we get to King’s Recap or Rewind, excuse me. And then it’s your work. And uh the clips is, you know, for me as someone that is reading a script that I wrote, but not knowing what you’re going to play is the fun part because I have some thoughts. I go, I know what Chris is going to play here. And then you surprise me. Sometimes it falls right in line. Um and then Dave has no idea what either part. And uh I enjoy it. Kings Rewind’s one of my favorites. I’m glad we did that. There were only a couple times where I really stressed out because I was like, I’ve got nothing for this. The funny thing is the way you’ve told me that that it’s happened, like you said, maybe a couple times where literally maybe even you see it when you get it at night, it might be late and then it’s the next morning and you go, I I don’t know. And then when you get in here then all of a sudden like if you get one then you just it like snowballs. You get them all. Yeah. It’s just how my weird dumb brain works. You said it. You said it. Uh, Kings Rewind is my favorite thing on this show and I’ve been listening for a decade. Wow. How about that? They’ve been listening for decades and they’re talking about it for decades. Well, thank you 916. Uh, it’s fun. It’s a fun segment. And uh, to our sales staff, we got a few more months before King Season. That thing needs to be sold. The people love it. The people love it. The people want it. It’s nicely packaged into a segment that can also be repurposed. I mean, we’re we’re we’re doing the work for you. Um, it they’re they’re clips. So, if you’re thinking of a barberh shop, cuts clips. Um, I don’t know. There’s lots of that’s that’s a direct time, but it could be anybody. Could be anybody, right? Butcher. What’s that? A butcher. Yes, that’d be awesome. We’re sponsored by a butcher. Arby’s. We have the meats. You just don’t know. We will take any sponsor, any endorser of that segment. And you know, the consistency, it’s after a win, it’s after loss, it’s after a game. Sometimes Sometimes they’re superersized. I think one time last year was the first time we had a triple. Yeah, we had a three-game one. That was long. So, it must have been uh the Kings played on a Friday, maybe Sunday, and we had Monday off, and they played on a Monday or so. Three and four nights. And um or maybe it was like Thanksgiving. Maybe that was that might have been it. Yeah. where you have Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday off, I don’t know. But any which way, we look forward to that. And we do thank you all of you that have been regulars uh that have been listening. Thank you so much. Again, 916339140 on the text line. 1 800-920140 on the phone lines. To those of you on YouTube, I I’ve been looking over that conversation today. We are all over the place over there. From talking about the Kings to favorite breakfast to bacon, I’ve seen I Everybody’s over all over the place over there. But that’s that’s our special chat group which we appreciate you guys. While you’re there, please hit the thumbs up button and uh and uh give us give us our love. We do appreciate that. Thank you. Like, subscribe, all the regular things that we ask you to do. All right. Well, obviously Garrett Johnson is out there doing his work, so hopefully we’ll find a time to connect with him. He was scheduled to join us to talk about the British Open. And they are underway round one. And I think what’ll be interesting is Scotty Sheffler watching him because he is the world number one. He is I mean he’s got really I think the reason where he’s got the separation from everybody else is he’s got kind of all of the aspects of the game, right? He’s got a great um competitiveness, a great level head. He what was it the last tournament? I like he was kind of out of it. you just weren’t even paying attention. By the end, he’s just chipping away and chipping away. So, he just he constantly grinds at these things. Right now, he is currently in a tie for fourth, one back after the first round. The first round is not all complete, but at the moment, he’s in the clubhouse at three under, just one back of the top of the leaderboard. So, that’s got to be a concern. His ball striking there, there just really isn’t a weakness in his game. So, I think when you get to that position, when your game is refined, uh you’re playing well, you’re confident, you’re maybe feared a little bit by the competition. And by that, I mean, I think that was such a huge advantage that Tiger Woods had when he was like the dominant golfer. There was no doubt he was better than everybody. And if he was on his game, it became a thing where it was intimidation. And so I think when athletes can get other athletes in awe of their, you know, their own game, what an advantage that is. And whether or not they’re trying to do it, I don’t know that there’s an intention about that. I don’t think there is necessarily with Scotty Sheffler. Maybe there was with Tiger a little bit of an intimidation factor that he knew he had. Sheffller just plays and he speaks with his game. Tiger played with his game and and you know wasn’t a talker on the court but just like it was a there was almost a lore about him and I’ve seen when other athletes get to that stage of everyone else is kind of in awe of him like when Michael Jordan’s in his absolute prime and you know there’s always going to be someone that’s you know I I’ll be the one I’ll take him on and then you know get in line you’re another one that goes home with a loss and just there’s so many legendary stories about Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods or these just elite of the elites that they almost don’t feel real and Sheffller’s not in that stage, but you just go, man, when you are already the best of the best and you get to this level and there’s certain people that you go, man, they’re even they’re even that much better than me, which uh I think about different sporting events. Last year, I think it was in the Olympics um when gosh, I forget her name. uh Sydney Leavone, I think it is, um was running in her event that just no one can compete with her and these are the best athletes in the world and she’s winning by yards, like 20 yards and you just go, h how is that possible? How is someone that much better than everyone else when everybody has been training just as long, probably close to as talented, and you just go, man, the the separation, the appreciation that I have for for greatness in sports when you just go, this pitcher, this quarterback, this basketball player, this tennis player like serves harder than anyone or is faster or stronger. It’s just it’s amazing. and you kind of get to that spot where everyone knows now they’re chasing you, but maybe they can never get there. And for Scotty Sheffler right now, second place as we speak at the British Open at 300 under par. So, we’ll continue to update. If we get word from Garrett Johnson, we’ll try to connect with him, but right now uh right now he’s in parts unknown, so we haven’t been able to track him down. Sacramento’s complete heating and cooling company and second opinion partner. All right, we have tracked down Garrett Johnson Beyond the Clubhouse podcast. We’re going to get to him in just one moment. Chris, who’s hot? Well, very quickly, Nick Clifford’s hot. In his four games in the Las Vegas Summer League, he’s averaging 18 and a half points, six and a half rebounds, and five assists. And before you even ask, who’s not, the New Orleans Pelicans? They have lost every Summer League game. And they have lost by an average of 10 points per game. They were tanking for the summer league draft. The draft, exactly what they were doing. All right, that’s who’s hot, who’s not. Let’s uh go to the British Open and check in with our guy Garrett Johnson from the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast. Been on the show many times. Has Sacramento ties. Oh, and are you in the work room there, Garrett? Where where are you at? It’s a labor of love, man. I mean, this is just what we do. It’s it’s our passion projects for about 95% of these writers, journalists. So, that’s just it comes in the territory, right, Jay? Yeah, absolutely. Well, tell us about day one. I know it’s not all complete so far, but I see Sheffller right up there at the top near the leaderboard in second right now. What are your day one observations? Yeah, I think just getting off to a start. The big key, it’s so easy to be lost in the granular with golf and all the different narratives like it’s to totally choose your own adventure. If you remember the old uh book series from the 80s and 70s, I used to read those. And if you you could go any direction during the especially these Thursday and Friday where it’s just there’s so many storylines happening 156 players. So what I realized is that Rory Maroy here in Northern Ireland you’ve got to see and spend time and watch what he’s doing. And I got to see him tee off. And I will say this, you know, there’s little nuances. When I saw him leave the putting green, took a couple deep breaths. Remember this is a reigning masters champion. All his fellow Northern Irish folks have been waiting to celebrate the career grand slam. Jason, you know what I’m saying? And this is their moment. It happens to be the home game later this summer after he gets that win. A monkey off his shoulders. He took a couple deep breaths as he left the putting green knowing he was about to go into the, you know, the gauntlet there of the first T- box and is thousands of people watching him and he took very measured steps up the stairs. Does that make sense? It’s like a lot of times if you’re nervous, at least I know if I’m nervous, I’m I’m skipping every four steps. I’m taking huge steps because you want to get there. You want to arrive quickly. So, he really seemed regulated to me, Jason, if that makes sense. Very kind of calm, taking good breaths. And then also, when he got there, there were more phones than I’ve seen maybe since gosh, the last big sporting event. I’m trying to think of a comparison in basketball. There were phones out like crazy as he hit his T-shot. I took some video of it. I mean, we’re thousands of cell phones watching their guy. I spoke with Gary Woodland a month ago, Jason, and he told me the energy on that Friday when he missed the cut when they were last here in 2019 at Port Rush in Northern Ireland. The energy was better than anything he’s ever seen. He won a US Open at Pebble Beach. And he’s like, dude, the energy in him missing the cut by one shot was the best I’ve seen in golf. Could you imagine if we get to a Sunday what that energy would be like, Jason? To me, it this day leads with Rory. And of course, as you mentioned, Sheffller really confident. He looks good so far. He had some nice comments so far post round and a lot of people were talking about the viral video of him talking about fulfillment. That life is all about fulfillment. It’s not about fleeting wins. Those those 10 minutes or an hour that you enjoy your win. I can’t I honestly you’re as you’re describing this Garrett I I am thinking about what that potentially could look like if Rory is either in the mix or potentially going to win on Sunday. I I don’t even know. I am actually now anxious to see what that would look like if he is in the mix like that. I like that you said that because he started pretty bad just like he did in 2019. I mean he he boied the first hole and he’s like here we go again. It’s a continuation of the back nine at the Masters, right? I spoke with him or sorry, I spoke with uh Stuart Sink who who hit balls next to him yesterday. I I cannot tell you Jason the energy on the range on a Wednesday was off the charts in terms of the fans watching Rory warm up. Okay. I I talked to his caddy. I said, “How many balls on on Monday? How many balls does he have to hit before he’s hitting 100% full out?” And Harry Diamond, his caddy, he said 40 golf balls on the range. then he’s he’s then he’s all in. Mhm. Well, you know, and he’s a guy that’s going to be worth watching amongst many others as we’re talking with Garrett Johnson. Uh Johnston from the Clubhouse podcast, Beyond the Clubhouse podcast has been covering golf for a long time. Um I see Garrett may have froze. Do we? Yeah, we’ll see if we get Garrett back here in a second because uh look, he’s not only on our link, he’s uh on our YouTube page here. He’s across the pond. So, we’re trying to get this all sorted out and see if we can get him uh connected back with us. Did we lose him, Chris? I think. Yeah, I think we did. So, we’re going to continue to work on that. Um because Garrett’s onsite. This is really amazing. We’re scheduled to have him tomorrow as well. But I I think about that like you know Rory got such an incredible amount of love for getting the Masters Championship and now this one uh the British Open which he’s won before the Open and for it to be in Ireland for it to be a champ the first time there since he’s completed the slam this year uh in going so long without winning another major. And Rory’s one of the most uh loved golfers out there. Kind of playing this on his home course, home country I should say. This is this has got to be a great opportunity for him. So hopefully we’ll get connected back with Garrett. Um we’re still efforting here. We got a few more minutes left in this segment, but we are scheduled to have Garrett tomorrow as well. But I’m glad he’s given us a little bit of the taste. Just speaking of Rory, he mentioned he got off to a slow start, but he has regrouped a little bit. I saw Rory at right now he is at through five. he is at minus one. So after that bogey, he birdied and then birdied again on five. So um yeah, Rory is going to be someone that everybody’s watching. Uh certainly Sheffller has just, you know, become one of the top names in golf, but I what I like about this tournament right now is you’re seeing someone like Phil Mickelson trying to turn back the clock a little bit. He is tied for 17th. He finished his opening round at minus one. Other big- time names, John Rohm uh is out there at minus one. Justin Rose who seems consistent over the years. Justin Thomas, they’re both at minus one as well. So, another fun tournament, another opportunity, but for Rory, if he could do something magical this weekend, what Sunday and Saturday really for that matter, but mainly Sunday, what that would look like in Ireland if he was uh if he was threatening to win it or in the leaderboard or in some sort of, you know, that’s what I think the sport we’ve talked about for a while. Like, u for for many, Tiger has always been the draw. Well, Tiger hasn’t been around in a while, but can the sport continue to keep its high level interest and peak for a lot of people? you start to get people that consistently put up great performances like Sheffler, Rory, who’s a known commodity and you start getting them in Saturday and Sunday battles, that’ll also help your sport as well. So, uh, we may have lost Garrett here for for the duration. We apologize on that. Oh, we do get him back. Okay, we got a few more minutes with Sorry about that, guys. Crazy weather. I got my my stuff is malfunctioning. So, my bad. That makes sense where I left off. Like Rory, the energy even on a Wednesday was massive on the range. Does that make sense? Like Stuart Sink talked with him, sat hit balls right next to Rory and said, “You know, this first time seen you since the Masters and I can’t believe that you had the most pressure in the history of golf when you missed that 72nd hole birdie.” Remember that Jason? Little five-footer that we’ve all missed at Hagen Oaks, right? and uh and Roy Rory missed it and Steuart sink was Josh and him giving him all kinds of trouble for that and that was their exchange and it’s funny um anyway Harry cat Harry his caddy had said that 40 balls gets him to 100% of hitting his shots when he warms up this is for Rory and he took a 15minute break after hitting 40 balls on Wednesday right and he goes right back to smashing them after he talks to Steuart Sync for 15 minutes like this is it’s not a fair fight Jason yeah well he amongst many are going to be worth watching. Is there another golfer or two that I know we just started but Garrett that you kind of got your eye on for this weekend? Yeah, that’s a I think honestly John Rom has been my pick from the beginning and the reason why is he’s won down the street four miles away at Port Stewart which is a similar links course similar kind of challenges. He’s won two Irish Opens. All right, so that’s that’s a huge help for for wanting to win this event. you need to be able to be creative. And I asked him, honestly, this is a funny question I asked him in the in the press or after. I said, “Sentimentally, do you get motivated by the fact that you played with JJ Spawn today?” Right? We saw JJ Spawn win the US Open. You got your first tour win at Tory Pines playing with JJ, right? You have a ton of great emotions from being here at the British Amter in 2014 at Port Rush. You said you fell in love with Lynx Golf at this course. Does that make sense, Jason? Yeah. Yeah. And he said, “No, that’s all old history. None of that means anything to me. Not for my performance. If you’re asking my performance, no, it’s it’s nice memories. It’s feel-good stuff, but it doesn’t do anything for for my mentality at a major and trying to get this done.” Anyway, I I like him in in his he gets fired up and I think you need that especially these conditions get tricky. It’s supposed to be rainy and windy. when he won those Irish Opens, it was when it was super windy at Port Stewart down the road. So, he knows how to navigate those. And the other thing is he knows how to process disappointment of a major. He was right there at the PGA at Quail Hollow and he had a bad back nine. He was tied for the lead with Sheffler. Had a bad back nine and he said that it was important for him to learn how to deal with that. So, I think he’s gone through the the tough stuff. Yeah. And he’s uh he’s right up there. He’s doing just fine now. He’s still out in his opening round. Uh we’re up against our break here, Garrett. I know we’re going to check in with you again tomorrow. We appreciate you being flexible with us and and kind of navigating through our our connections here. Garrett Johnston, of course, uh Beyond the Clubhouse podcast, been covering golf for years. He’s been out in Sacramento for years before that. We’ve known him for many, many years. Garrett, enjoy your time. What an honor to be out there. That’s got to be fun. And I hope you have a great weekend. We look forward to talking to you uh tomorrow as well. I appreciate it, man. Uh we’ll we’ll talk to you soon. All right. Sounds good. That is Garrett Johnson. We’ll uh check in with Garrett tomorrow too from a day two report from the British Open. But again, it’s the Beyond the Clubhouse podcast. Garrett’s all over the golf world. You definitely uh will see him and uh I know it’s he’s living out a dream out there following this and we will continue to do so uh as the tournament rolls on. All right, for us when we come back, final hour of the show, cross talk with Allen Styles and Celebrity Birthdays is coming up. What’s on deck brought to you by Trex Decking and Railing is in our final hour. But up next, the Kings rookies. So far so good through their four games in Las Vegas. We’ve got a four-way tie for first place. All of them at four underpar and done for the day. That is Yakob Olsen, Hatong Lee, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Matthew Jordan. No, Matthew Jordan’s at fourth. I don’t know why this will not let me open. And it is Matt Fitzpatrick tied at third. Matthew Jordan, Scotty Sheffler tied for fourth. And we got a lot of people tied for fourth. They’re all tied for fourth. All of them are tied for fourth. Hey, John Rum tied for 18th. Okay, that’s Garrett’s pick. Watch him. He’s at minus one. Tied for 18th. Uh, Matthew Jordan. Any relation to Michael? Maybe through marriage. Michael B. Jordan. Getting closer. I think Montel. Montel Jordan. Um, Doug Christiey’s college roommate. Correct. Yeah. If you know, you know. All right. So, there’s round one going on right now. Did you happen to know that they got in a huge fight when they first started rooming together? Tell me about this fight. So, they got in and like Montel Jordan’s like side of the the dorm was a mess. Doug was like super clean and he’s just like he’s like, “I don’t know why you’re not getting it through your head.” Right. This is how you do it. Ah. And then Montel cleaned his room and then he was like his side and he’s like, “Oh, no. This No, he didn’t even do it. He went right to the studio.” Oh, he didn’t. But But how did he get from this is how you do it to this is how we do it. Because it was both of them. But Doug was like it was just Doug. There wasn’t a wei at the time. Because this is how you do it. Uhhuh. Because like him because Doug already did it. Yeah. So by Montel Jordan doing it then it would become this is how we do it. But he didn’t do it. No, because he got the idea for the song. Oh, so the song So Doug gets credit for the song. I don’t think he even got credit for it. Is still messy. Huh. This is how we do it. Is it weird that I mean, if we go by the song, Doug was rooming with a guy taller than him that wasn’t on the basketball team. Was he taller? I know he’s tall. Is he taller? Six foot eight. He stood Oh. Then he is taller. It’s like, “Oh, I’m with the basketball team.” Oh, that’s the guy that probably plays basketball, not that short guy at 66. My goodness. Um, all right. Final hour here of the show. Coming up, we will have cross talk with Allan Styles. See what he’s got going on today with his show coming up at 10:00. Remember, he’s at 10 to two. Then the drive guys from noon to 6 today. Uh, what’s on deck coming up as well. We’ll do some scoreboard watching for the Kings because Sacramento won again yesterday. That’s a 4-0 preseason or preseason 4-0 summer league and they’ve have made it more than clear that their goal has been to win the summer league championship and I appreciate that. I can I can respect that. And yesterday, another game of evaluation. And when we’re looking at uh the rookies and the way they play, um I know a lot of you out there are liking them. I’m liking them. If you want to chime in on that, you can at 1 800 920140 or 916339140 certainly on our text line. But Maxim Reno, his final stat line, 23 minutes. He made half his shots, three for six, uh missed a three. His two free throws later in the game, I’m going, man, point differential matters. They need every possible point. But he was uh four for six. Uh five rebounds, two assists, three blocks, uh and he had 10 points. One of the things we were talking about yesterday that’s going to tie into Maxim Reno was the fact that um at the All-Star game for example, I thought they had some incredible access and wired for sound guys in action in the game. If you missed it, it was it was awesome to see Clayton Kershaw on the mound, Mike to the booth, and you know, Joe Davis and John Smoltz were talking to him basically while he was pitching. Not even between pitches, but even while he was pitching, uh Jacob Wilson was miked up. I mean, there was a ton of guys, but Jacob Wilson was playing shortstop while his dad, Jack, a former major leager, former all-star, was in the stands. So, they’re talking to both of them and the communication with everybody with Pete Crow Armstrong, with Cal Raleigh. They had a bunch of different players that were miked up through the game, and it was it was really cool. Well, summer league um is kind of informal, too. You’ll see coaches get interviewed and players interviewed during the game, maybe on the sideline. During the game, they put Maxim Renault, who was on the bench. uh he got miked up and I thought that was pretty cool. Here’s a little conversation uh that Maxim had in game with the broadcasters yesterday during that Kings Cavs game here in Vegas Kings and Cavs in the first quarter. It’s a pleasure to be joined now by the Kings rookie Maxim Reo. Maxim, thanks for doing this. Uh first question for you. You missed the last game the Kings played and now you’re back. You don’t often see guys return from injury in summer league. A lot of the time they’ll shut it down. Why is it important for you to keep playing? Well, I mean like we’re here to win a championship, right? I mean, they got a little ring at the end if we win it all. We’re three and 0. We got to get another dab hopefully by 15 so we can guarantee a semi-inal spot. So, yeah, we’re back. We’re trying to get wins. Saw you at the combine. You played the first day, shut it down, didn’t play the second day, what has what has been the developmental focus for you since you got drafted? Um, defensive end mostly, right? Like you just want to get some talk. Hopefully, I can be the loudest guy out there. uh being able to be present on ball screen defense, maybe shot blocking a little bit and then other than that just being efficient, right? Like NBA players, you got to adjust to the level real fast. So that’s what I’ve been working on. Your coach said that even though you didn’t play last game, your communication was elite from the bench. How is that why is that important? If you’re a young basketball player and you’re watching, why is that such an important aspect? Well, first of all, control which can control, right? Like energy and talk like the very base level. And then on top of that on defense, especially as a big, you see everything. You’re the quarterback of the defense. And if you want to anchor it, you got to let everybody know. Screen left, screen right, pin down, go rebound, hair, switch, red, everything. Uh that’s that’s just the basics, man. Thanks. Do you find yourself ever speaking French? If you if like if you’re not thinking about it, do you just bark out a command in French and no one knows what you’re saying? All I’m going to say is when there are terrible calls, the ref don’t speak French. That’s all I’m going to say. We could get away with a little bit more. Yes, sir. Uh we noticed you were number 42. That is that was your pick in the draft. Is that why you were? Absolutely not. I mean, when I came into Stanford, I wanted number 12. He was taken. Went at number 21, he was taken. 23 was taken. 41 was taken. I just asked my coach, I said, “Look, what do you have?” He say, “42.” I’m like, “All right, worried for four years in college. Won a European championship with it. Got drafted 42.” It’s a full circle moment. What would it mean? You mentioned at the very top the availability to potentially win a championship here. What would that mean for this team? Especially when you look at guys like Nick and Devin Carter, guys that you know you’re going to be with in Sacramento. Yeah, I mean set the tone for next year, right? We have a lot of young guys here, a lot of Jill guys also trying to make their way to the NBA. So, you want to be able to set the tone, show that you have winning quality, we like have winner mentality um and and get ready for the season, right? You want to be able to compete. Like that’s what the NBA is about. You’re here to win games. So, showing that you can compete, showing that you can win, that’s that’s all that matters. In your early NBA experience here, what’s the biggest difference between this and the college game? Way faster, way more physical. Uh, guys don’t miss as much. I mean, look at that. Look at that. Oh, okay. Never mind. But, uh, no, like honestly, it’s like you leave a guy wide open. He’s going to make it. Um, everybody is like in super good shape. Like, you need to be able to adjust to that level. 24 second shot clock, 3 second in the paint, all that. So, yeah, roles are different, intensity is different. What did you study at Stanford? Um, computer science and mathematics. Obviously, how How hard of a major was that at Stanford? I mean, because the word Stanford for so many of us that ever played basketball, it’s scary to think about academics and yet you studied that and excelled at the level in what you did out on the court. Come on, TK. Good job. Sorry, Michael. Um, yeah. Uh, I don’t think, look, you can’t be scared of that. Uh, if something interests you and you’re willing to put the work in, you’ll be good. Um, I don’t think it’s much harder than any other university. I understand it’s more timeconuming. You got to be more committed, but I think that’s who I am as a person. I’m committed to my craft in basketball, in school, everywhere in family. So, that’s what I’m trying to do. That’s what the person I’m trying to be. Trying to be reliable. Trying to put in the work every single day. Well, keep it up, Max. This was awesome. Thanks for doing this. Keep doing your thing. Thank you for having me, man. Let’s win this game. All right. Uh, as Jess said, a regular to the show, um, I could uh or wait is it? Max is so personable. Yes. Uh, also said, “Oh, thanks, Jess. I could listen to Jay Ross and Max talk forever. I had a a great conversation with him. I had a lot of fun on air what you guys saw and even off. He’s he is that personable. Very likable, very friendly, very social. Um and you could tell he’s he’s very much into family and friends and people. Um just outgoing. And being asked in that interview in game, I loved a couple things that happened. If you watched it when it happened, you could see when he called the shot, I think on uh they were talking about the NBA and he’s like, “Yeah, like this. watched this go in and it was neat but unfortunately he missed. He’s like never mind. And then he’s just cheering on teammates, happy for their moves, their takes. He’s the very first game I went to and that he played the the I mean I’ve said this a couple times now and other people have asked him about it. Those guys asked him about his communication. I mean his voice just booms through the arena. He is very very vocal. He’s going to communicate. He’s going to let people know where screens are coming. And I I say that’s a skill. Well, I mean, people are hopefully talking, but just talking loud enough to let everybody know, it lets the defense know. Uh, he’s talked to me on our conversation before about studying film and getting others mad that he knows what plays are coming. Look, he’s a smart guy. He’s a well-rounded guy. I think he’s going to be a great teammate. And then now he works on those those layers of his game because he has worked on it. He has gotten better. Now, it’s the things that he talked about, the adjustment to the NBA, a few tweaks in the rules, but that’s really more about the speed, the size, um the things he’s going to be put in, like generally when you’ve played in a bigger position generally. This is a generalization, but you’re put down on the block. He’s a guy though that has outside skills, ball handling skills, interior skills, but other teams are trying to now take advantage of you. So, they’re going to look at a big, let’s set a screen, get you in switches, get you on guards. That’s where other teams are trying to win. They’re going to go, “What? We’ve got one of our best creators and we’re going against a rookie big man that maybe we’re questioning his foot speed, his ability to stay with the guy, maybe he’ll foul.” These are spots that Maxi Mno is going to be put in. And then on the offensive end, how does he fit in amongst the group? So, I love what I see about him as a person first and foremost. I think the King’s got an incredible human being. Secondly, um he’s a good player and so now you you want to see his development, his work. It’s just beginning here at the NBA level. By all accounts, he has been someone that does not shy away from extra work. So that’s good. And he just has to keep keep it going, right? This is play against Sabonis, play against the Joker, play against Embiid, play against these guys that are going to make him better. Up your level of competition, which is naturally going to happen here in the NBA, and uh the team thought enough to kind of execute to get him in the second round. So did he. He felt like this would be the best fit. This was a marriage that the Kings have been working on here. And then now for Maxim Reno, it’s about uh polishing polishing everything, getting better, getting the reps, learning the league, learning himself, um, learning his teammates, and then building the trust for Doug Christie to put him in games. And we’re not there yet. He’s not to that spot, but that’s that’s the work in progress for Maxim Renault. And for a second round pick, again, to me, when you pick in the second round, you hope to get someone that at some point can contribute to your organization. Well, I think that point will be this year. I think he’ll get minutes. I think he’ll there’ll be some time for him. It may not be right at the beginning. He’s going to have to earn all this, but I think he’s showing us that he’s on that right track. Now, the other rookie is Nick Clifford. There is a lot to like about Nate Clifford. One, he was picked higher. The Kings traded up to get him. So, they had their eyes on him. Again, his statline yesterday in 31 minutes, eight of 15, two of seven from three, made his only free throw, seven boards, nine assists, no steals or blocks yesterday. One turnover, 19 points, hit big, big shots. Uh there’s a couple times Cleveland was making a run or even past the Kings. Kings had a trouble stopping uh Proctor, the rookie from Duke, Tyrese Proctor, was killing him. What are you a 30? They’re 35. Yeah. So, but while he’s cooking, someone needs to score to stop the bleeding if you can’t stop him. And and Nate Clifford was coming up with big shot after big shot. And he is another guy that seemingly is rising to the moment. I think the first half of the first game, he was a little bit passive. Since then, we haven’t really seen that. He’s attacked at the right time. He’s let the game come to him at the right time. He’s found others at the right time. Like his timing for things, recognizing when it’s time to get downhill and get into the paint, when it’s time to pull up for a jump shot. He’s shown us a wide variety of moves of skills. I don’t see a lot of flaws. We’ll need more time for his game. Not not saying they’ve got the, you know, the best player ever or the most refined and perfect product, but you look for things traits that you go, “All right, I’m not maybe this is a a blind spot in his game or this. I don’t see a lot of it yet.” And I’m, you know, I’m looking for it. And I can tell you this, opponents will look for it and they’ll find it. So, whatever is not there yet and not, you know, there’s stuff that can be polished more always, but he is really well-rounded. And I think the beauty of Nick Clifford is that versatility in the spot where I think Doug Christie in a pinch could play him in a lot of positions as an offensive player and a lot of positions as a defensive player. And when you are that versatile and it’s not like, well, they can play this position if they absolutely had to. No, it’s I think if you play him in a one, two, or three spot, maybe even four, you’re not doing it like h we’re just trying to buy minutes or get by with it. Like you’re expecting a good performance from him. And I think the same defensively, he acknowledged his versatility. It’s been his strength. It’s what he’s provided for his teams, whether at Colorado or Colorado State, and it’s what he’s going to provide for the Kings. Uh he was the player that the announcers also talked to uh from ESPN 2 last night or yesterday afternoon after the game and I thought he had some interesting things to share. So here is uh Nick Clifford postgame with the media. Now we’re going to have the man himself, Nick Clifford. We’ll get a headset on Nick here after another outstanding performance from him. 19 points, better than 50% shooting again, plus nine assists and seven rebounds. And Nick, thanks for joining us. Congrats on another When you guys are 4 and0, I mean, how badly do you want to win this thing? That’s what we came here to do, man. That’s what we came here to do. And we’re not done yet. You know, a lot of people in the the pre-draft process talked about versatility. They put you in a lot of different positions. Bring the ball the floor, bring you off ball, and get the ball in your hands to go ahead and make plays. How have they stretched you? And how have you responded from being stretched? Uh, I mean, just that’s that’s what I that’s what I live off of, my versatility, you know, trying to play both sides of the floor defensively. Um, making plays for my teammates, taking the shot when I got it. Uh, that’s that’s why I work on my game. So, you know, they ask a lot of me and that’s what I want to do to help my team win. Nick, who’s the NBA player who you try to model your game after? Uh, I’ve always been a huge Kobe guy. Love Kobe Bryant. That’s who I watched a lot growing up. uh guys in the league right now, you know, Jaylen Williams, uh Josh Hart, Derek White, guys like that, guys that could do a little bit of everything. When when you look at the Kings and the roster that you will be playing for when the regular season hits, how do you see that versatility working with the the the cornerstones that they have within the organization right now? Uh just trying to help my team win, however that may be, whatever coach asking me, you know, I can go in guard the other team best player, whether that’s that or, you know, coming in being a scorer for the team. It doesn’t matter. Uh, whatever the coach is asking me, that’s what I’m going to go try and do to help our team. Doug Christie and Scott Perry were sitting over here. Did you look over at them a couple times and say, “See this. This is what I can do.” Uh, he he he be giving me some tips during the game, so I definitely definitely look over a couple times. You know, I think after that corner three, there was something said in the first half when you dribbled right to that corner spot and got to your Yeah, most definitely. They like some of the things they said. Definitely. Well, Nick, you were incredible today and uh good luck in the playoffs, assuming you guys were there. I appreciate it. Appreciate you. Congratulations, sir. Yes, sir. I like a lot of what I see from Nick Clifford and just some of those comments as far as how you know players he’s looked at idolized like if we go to Kobe Bryant you know that guy has got legendary had legendary work ethic and approach to the game and just a mindset that mamba mentality that beind became uh became famous to pair with his just incredible abilities. Um, but I do like his own comps, right? People have always tried to do this and it’s probably unfair, but it’s what we do. It’s like you’re trying to find, hey, somebody’s new here. We don’t know a lot about them. Who are they similar to? Well, I like it when a player themselves at least gives their comp because to me, that’s better than than when someone else does it. But, um, he he’s referencing Jaylen Williams of OKC. Um, Josh Hart, these are good reference points. Who was the other one he said? uh Derek White. So, if the Kings have anything remotely close to someone like Josh Hart, Derek White, Jaylen Williams, again, these are these are tough things to throw out because then you’re you’re expecting that. But I like the the Hart and White comparisons because I look at those guys like him in that versatile way where they’re asked to do a lot of things and sometimes it might be Josh Hart helped the Knicks win a game because he got 14 rebounds. We all look at points. Maybe we look sometimes at, oh, look at the defense they played. But you got to do the totality of the game and it just feels like when Nate Clifford is on the floor in summer league so far in the four games that good things are happening for him and for the team and you notice him. He doesn’t hide. His versatility makes it hard for him to do so. his own words saying like my versatility has given me a spot to where I can go in and guard the other team’s best player and I can also go in and score for a team if they need it and that’s what the Kings are going to need is I think his versatility will complement this roster very very well. Now the piece of the puzzle uh the other part about it is the character of the player and I said this when I went to the opening press conference of Max and Clifford and I know uh others were there Jess who was there who brought her Clifford the big red uh dog plush doll there and got it signed. But look, I think the impressions those guys made that day were phenomenal. And I said it afterwards, I go, it was one of the better press conferences I’ve seen. It’s it’s nice to say that, nice to see. It doesn’t really mean much on the court, but now that we’ve seen them on the court, the way they’ve performed, and you add in like the character of these guys, you love it. You love it because it’s really mostly about how they play on the floor. You want good guys, too, if you can. They don’t have to be, but I think you got good guys, smart guys, guys that you would want to be teammates with, guys that are going to be cheerleaders, supportive, maybe get on you if needed. I just they’re the right mix of additions to this team. And even his agent uh was interviewed during the game and basically shared that same kind of thought when he’s looking at their own talent, who they’re trying to build in their agency. And Nate Clifford is someone they added partly because of his games certainly, but the other part about his him, his relationship with people, his family, just how he treats people. So I think I think the King’s got a really good one here in a in a lot of ways. But the other part of the evaluation of this is probably the trickiest part, and that is Nick Clifford has the look of a guy that needs to be on the floor for this team, but where? That’s the puzzle that I’m intrigued about today. doesn’t have to be answered today. We will probably speculate on this today until the season starts or even as the season goes because when you start to build a roster that the Kings are trying to do of depth and sometimes we go, man, there’s a lot of people on this team that can play, but it may not be that great of a team. And I don’t know where the Kings are going to fall in line amongst the West. I know the West will be incredibly difficult. The Kings know that. But Nick Clifford looks like to me a guy that should be getting minutes from day one. Could start, doesn’t have to start. Could play a lot off the bench, could be a minimal off the bench. I just think he’s got to be on the floor, but where in place of whoms? Whose minutes is he taking? And when you’re trying to win as many games as possible, trying to build a culture, uh sometimes it’s at the expense of a rookie, like ah it’s a little bit easier to sit a rookie, say you’re a rookie and got to get your bumps and learn the league. And whereas a veteran, you might one hurt their feelings and ego. Two, um that could also be a distraction for the rest of the team if if the veteran makes it that way. So you you shouldn’t make moves. solely on that, but it can be a factor. So, where does he get in? At D Rozan, at Lavine’s, at Keon Ellis, Keegan Murray, Malik Monk’s expense, uh Shruder Carter, there’s there’s a lot of guys that we all feel can play and should get some minutes, but juggling that, deciphering it, if you’re Doug Christie, doing out the minutes, I mean, it it could be as simple. I mean, in in the in the logical sense when we’re all thinking like, well, if I were coach, this is what I would do. I I there are politics involved and we can’t be naive enough to go, well, it’s easy. Play the guy that gives you the best offense and defense and performs the best. Sit the other guys. I like that in theory, but you do have agents, you have egos, you have contracts, you have ownership, you have um assistant coaches, you have family, you have a lot of people pulling you into a different directions. And I think the the most successful coaches and organizations try to leave it to as much as possible as the people that are making those decisions. But sometimes a general manager may add a player and say, “Look, I added this player for a reason. I want you to play this player or we traded for this guy or we drafted this guy.” And this will be different for Scott Perry in a sense that probably when we start the season, maybe half of the roster will be his roster and half of it will be Monty McNair’s roster. And it doesn’t mean like, hey, just play my guys. Well, you know, Sabonis is coming back. That wasn’t the guy Scott Perry uh drafted or helped get here in a trade. So, but you also go, yeah, Sabonis is the best player, one of the best players on the team. So, this will be interesting to see where Nick fits in. I think he does. The the simple blank statement is he belongs and he should play. I just don’t know how many minutes or where that is yet, but that’ll get sorted out. And if you continue to shine in summer league, then transfer that to training camp and practice, then to the preseason, he’s going to earn those minutes. And I think his versatility and his availability, the way he’s played has shown that he deserves it so far, right? We’re not there. He could have a bad spring, a bad uh fall camp and others outperform him, then then it’s not your turn yet. But what we’ve seen so far, there’s a lot to like from Nate Clifford. Also, the final day of scheduled play in the summer league. And I say that of of scheduled play because there’ll be more games after today. But this is the final day of the schedule. So, let’s do it as we’ve been doing the last couple of days. Let’s see. We have um one, two, three, four, Chris. Four potential finals previews today. Which is the most likely to be an NBA Finals preview? Is it Hawks Grizzlies, Spurs Hornets, Celtics, Lakers, or Warriors Raptors? Celtics Lakers. Yeah, the league would love that. No. Oh, Warriors Raptors. Oh, we’ve had that final. We’ve had both of those finals before. Okay. When did the Celtics and Lakers ever play in the championship? I don’t know. Feel like a few times. H um let’s see. But not in like in the 2000s. Yes, they did. Really? Yeah. Huh. A couple times. All right. Must have been the bubble. H and others. Let’s go with uh Eastern Conference Finals previews. We have one, two, two there. What’s more likely to be an Eastern Conference Final preview? Pistons Heat or Pacers Knicks? We just had that. Yeah. No, I’m sorry. One more time. Pistons Heat. Pacers Knicks. I would say Pistons Heat. Really? Over Pacers Knicks? I mean, they don’t have Tyrese. I thought that’s why you give him a better chance. No, no, we’re thinking of two different things. Like, the Lakers will not win because of Luca. Uhhuh. The Pacers will win because of Tyrese. Oh, I got to understand the mind of Christopher Lad. Sorry, I should know that by now. You should see me watch a a Pacers game. describe it. It’s just me yelling no whenever I know Hallebertton’s about to get the ball and make one of those insane threes. Like that first one against the Knicks before he even got the ball, I was screaming no. It’s funny that was one of your guys. You turned on him. You turned on Mahomes. Did he turn on Did I turn on him or did he turn on us? I gave him a lot of leeway and now he’s on the thinnest of ice. I think he went through the eyes. Uh, we got two possible Western Conference Finals previews. Rockets Blazers or Nuggets Clippers? That’s most likely. Nuggets. Clippers. Yeah, I agree. Uh, as far as Kings fans go tonight, here’s what you want to watch. Clippers are 3 and 0. So, they play the Nuggets who are 0 and3. Um, the Raptors are 3 and 0 and have a huge point differential. So, they play the Warriors. I guess you’re going to be rooting for the Warriors today, Kings fans. Um, the Spurs Hornets are both 3 and0 and they play each other. So, someone lose. And the fifth team that’s 3 and 0 are the Hawks. They play the Grizzlies. So, um, I’ll try to do my best here with the math. Uh, right now the Oklahoma City Thunder are the top team. They’re top at 4-0, but have the best point differential at 14.8. Kings are also 4-0 with an 11.5 point differential. The T-Wolves are below the Kings at 4-0 with a differential of 9.5. The teams below them in the 3-0 category, Charlotte’s point differential is 8.7, uh, Clippers is 9.0, and the Hawks is 9.4. So, those three teams would have to win and win by, you know, about 15 or so, maybe 17 to change their point differential. And then the two teams that are above them uh that have a better point differential are the Spurs and the Raptors. So, if I had to guess, if every Well, not everybody could go undefeated, but if the Spurs and Raptors did, the Kings would probably be the four seed uh going into the Final Four, but we’ll see what happens. Some of these other teams could win and win by a large margin that changes the overall scope. But the Kings did their part. That’s the bottom line is they did their part to uh put themselves in a position to get to the summer league uh semi-finals, which is what they’re looking to do. Um, all right, couple things here on the text line. and we’ll clean up before we get to our final break. Uh, let’s see. Oh, Kings Rewind. Going back to that. Brought to you by Blockbuster Video. That’s according to Nick. We were looking for sponsors for that. Uh, we’re talking to Garrett Johnston about Scotty Sheffler. Well, Scotty probably isn’t feared like that because of his mentality. That’s based on his awards yesterday or winning isn’t everything to him. Okay, could be true. This one I’ve talked to you about before, Chris, and it’s so true. I’m glad the 5-30 said this. There’s so much energy talk. I was waiting for the American energy promo music to start and there it is. I think it someone will say it on the news on a TV show and I’m like, “Yeah, I’ve broken us.” Yeah, you totally did break us. That’s for sure. Except for Dave because he always hears and goes, “What? What did I Oh, yeah. Energy. Yeah, you would think it would.” Yeah, it hasn’t gotten to him. Um, where is this? I love the mentality of these young guys that want to win. And I remember Clifford saying his favorite player is Kobe. If he can bring a winning mentality uh to the team, that will be huge. That’s true. Also got that kid is very impressive. Talking about Clifford. I agree. Uh we had this question asked, “Jason, are you ever worried the Kings have the wrong veterans around Maxim? Max has a strong fire and a spirit to him. I hope quiet vets like Sabonis don’t diminish his passion. Seems like the vets are checked out. Um I’m not worried about that. I don’t think the Kings have a bad batch of veterans. I think they went through a lot last year though and I also think they weren’t thrilled with the way it ended and I’m one of them, right? I wasn’t I I didn’t love the back part of the season when they, you know, got to the playin which is was a goal I think at least at that point which you were weren’t going to be a playoff team but then you could have been and the home performance in the playing game against Dallas was awful. So, I mean, the last thing we’ve seen from the group um wasn’t super encouraging, but you know, you start you get get away from it, you get an off seasonason, they all know that Doug’s now the coach, you got a new general manager, you have some new players. I I think the rookies can actually bring some life into the veterans. I really do. And then you still have some prideful guys here. Look, I don’t think as much as you could be down on Sabona, if we’re talking about like the key veterans in Sabonis, D Rozan, and Lavine, I yeah, they’ve played a long time and they they um may be a little bit jaded or more jaded than the guys that are fresher and excited about all this stuff, but they’re still prideful and I I still think they have goals like Demar De Rozan wants to play for a championship. It may not be here, but I think he would be more than fine if it was here. Uh, Sabonis want I think likes Sacramento and wants to to not be looked at as, oh, he’s a really good center, puts up stats, but doesn’t make the team win enough. I mean, he wants to change that narrative. You got to get to, you know, looking at a guy like Zack Lavine. Same thing. Been a multi-time all-star. He’s been in the dunk contest. He’s been a guy that a lot of the people know, but, you know, he’s heard, “Ah, it’s a terrible contract. He hasn’t won enough.” I mean, they they know what people say about them. So, I I think there’s a sense of pride amongst that group that I I hope isn’t going to be a thing where, like you’re alluding to, could taint a guy like Maxim or Clifford. I don’t think so. I’m hoping there’s a little bit of a flip there that the the veterans get a recharge of of their spirit, of their belief, and energy as well. All right, break time for us. Shooting lower scores isn’t always about changing your swing or equipment. Sometimes it’s as simple as changing how you hit certain shots on the course. Molly Braid, a Golf Digest best young teacher, sees a classic mistake on uphill chips. Players will grab a sand wedge thinking the high lofted club will get the ball in the air, but instead the ball pops too high and comes up short. Use a club with less loft, Brad says. Grab your pitching wedge, 9 iron, or even 8 iron, depending on how far you hit the ball. Set up with your hips and shoulders in line with the hill. The handle’s going to come back and there will be added loft to the club, so it will have more height like a sand wedge. Your pitching wedge and your nine iron don’t have as much loft as your sand wedge, but when you’re hitting from a steep uphill lie, your pitching wedge is going to produce sand wedge-like results. You’ll get that high trajectory up and over the hill to land soft on the green. That’s your golf to go. I’m Frank Lar Roza. The latest headlines, the biggest stories, hard-hitting analysis. Yeah, this is none of those things. And now, here’s Carmichael, Dave, and Jason Ross. They’re friends. Just friends, right? Yeah. Huh? Uh-huh. Oh, there we go. Yeah. What’s up, Alan? Not too much. How you doing? We’re almost there. Almost there to what? The end of the week. The end of the week. To Friday. That’s right. Weekend. That’s right. Yeah. Um, all good on your end. All good. Yeah. All good. Yes. The no round table today. Guys are running around. And what are they doing today? I don’t know. When they say running around. Yeah. No. Well, it’s not happening. Okay. It’s not happening, right? They’re still there. Two of them. Two of them are still there. And you know, I just got to say something to the Kings community that may be on social media. You know, we’re we’re a strong community, right? We’re we’re a strong fan base and we’re not you’re not the Lakers or the Warriors or the Celtics. You you got to stick together. I saw some clips from the game yesterday that were being circulated, you know, through some of the bigot the bigger names in King’s Twitter and there are only two people that could have recorded those clips. Okay. And that’s Brendan Nunez and Chris Watkins. Just tag them of a model America. Just tag them. They were there. They were there. We know you. We know you pulled their their video. Just tag them. Right. Right. We got to be better than that. That’s that’s Laker type of stuff. Show them the respect. Just show them the That’s Knicks type of stuff. You know, they were they’ve been working. They’ve been doing they’re working their tails out off and now you’re getting your Elon Bucks and you couldn’t even tag them. I mean, it’s kind of messed up. Yeah. I was very upset. Play the game the right way. That’s right. It’s very simple. Yeah. Very simple. And when you if it’s you or the proverbial you I’m saying if you’ve had the video then the people will tag you. Exactly. And I That’s the thing. I know specifically this person that I’m talking about. If some somebody did it to them, they’d be ticked off. Really? Yeah. Okay. They’d be ticked off. That’s all I got. Uh what’s coming up today? What’s coming up today? We are really analyzing Sean Cunningham sit down with Scott Perry. There’s a lot of good stuff in there. Uh I know a lot of people, you know, it’s 20 23 minutes microwave society. You know, unless you’re in a car for that long, you might not get to all of it. But we are breaking a lot of it down. And yeah, he talks about Malik Monk. A lot of the questions that we’ve had get answered. I I wrote a piece that I uh dropped today as far as the rumors and everything that I heard in Vegas and have heard since. So, we’ll we’ll discuss that as well. So, yeah, it’s going to be a a nice breakdown of, you know, what everybody is thinking as the summer league is starting to come to a close. And we’re going to get to the Jawan Jennings conversation as well. And I saw Busting with the Boys, you know, friend. There’s a inside joke with my friendship with Will Compton cuz for Super Bowl I just kind of rolled up on him and and made him give give me his number. But busting with the boys, we’re having a conversation. Cam, who’s better, Cam Newton or Jaylen Herz? I think that’s just a crazy question. Crazy question. It’s not close. And your answer is Cam Newton. Superman. Superman, man. MVP. This the the That’s s He is one of the only guys going to a Super Bowl kind of ruined his narrative. Yeah. Is Jaylen Herz um a top 10 QB though? Right now? Yes. Right now? Yes. But Cam Newton was another type. I mean, go during one of the breaks, go Google Ted Gin drops and and look at how this how many passing yards Cam Newton had and how many he would have had if Ted Gin could actually catch a football. What would your answer be if Jaylen Herz took a selfie with you? Well, probably Jaylen Herz cuz I wouldn’t have looked like a boy scout. Yeah, but it still would have been Cam. I thought it was the hat. The hat made him look taller. The hat. It was the hat. The angle. It was awful. It was angled. It’s all about angles. Well, I went part two. I don’t know if you saw that with Josiah Johnson of the Gilbert Arenas podcast. We did I saw it. Couldn’t quite hear it. Yeah, we we that was to be fair all um just to be transparent. He was our first person. So, we had did some testing with the mic, saw him, and thought we got to go now. We’re we’re releasing some more content with Kings fans. And we weren’t I tried we tried to fix it but it was a one time thing and we had to get it’s good enough. Chris isn’t he is still doing well on social media. Chris Yeah. Chris he’s just Yeah. He’s a cool dude. He’s just 67. Yeah. So that’s a you know got to power through. Work the angles. I heard you say when you came back uh first day back it was that was that was a tough group to be around. The average height. Not not only men and women. Everyone. Everyone. Everyone. You know you just got to wear it. I was playing uh I was playing blackjack one of the days and you know the dealers usually have the view of like the and I could just tell like the dealer was looking right past me. So I’m like all right who who’s walking by and I look and it was a a large woman in a lot of way like very tall but also a bigger woman and he just said man it’s a lot of fabric cuz she had like an all it was like a one a one piece whatever she was wearing. Yeah like man it’s a lot of fabric. I mean, it it is it is it was crazy. It was crazy. But, you know, that’s that’s why we’re here and and our our voices uh you know are going to power us through. Yes, they are. That’s right. Uh you ready for a little celebrity birthdays? Yeah, I was awful yesterday. So, Chris was on fire. Yeah. Well, it is time for celebrity birthdays. Birthdays are meant to be spent with family and friends, and nothing brings family and friends together better than crumble cookies. Grumple cookie sounds good right now. I’m still working off Vegas, so maybe next week. Uh, first off, shout out. Happy birthday to my lovely wife. It’s her birthday. Wow. Saying her age. No. Like the innocent. Well, we know 21. Yeah. Yeah. Or 21. Excuse me. Sorry. Are you you going to cook or you go out? Um, today we uh tonight. Yes. Uh, we will be cooking. I will be cooking. No, we um but we’re also, you know, I have vacation next week. We got we’re we’re we’re scrambling a little. Yeah. See, you’re doing it right because I’ve suffered from and this is no, you know, hey, it is what it is, but you can’t celebrate, you know, sometimes there’s been a concert the week before. Yeah. You you do the concert, you spend your hard-earned money, then it’s her birthday, her actual birthday. That was the birthday, right? No. Can that was a rollover and then you got to pay again. So after is perfect, Jason. Always covered there. So the concert was a couple days ago and your wife’s birthday is Ellen. Well, I’m just saying in general, didn’t sound like Oh, it didn’t. Well, it did happen to me, but not recent, but not recently. Not recently. But I only Yes, we do her birthday and maybe stuff after. Yeah. I’m not doing before. Right. Are you like the type of person though like, “Oh, it’s my birthday. It’s my birthday week. It’s all about me this week because it’s my birthday. Strike you as that type of person. There are people I do know people like it’s my birthday month. I’m like month what? Yeah. I’ll find excuses. But it’s not I don’t need stuff from her. It’s just you have to have stuff. I’m going I’m I’m I’m grabbing Bevy’s with little Frankie. It’s my birthday. There you go. You know my favorite thing about my birthday honestly is just is the people that reach out. Like a lot of times just people call or text. It’s like that’s my favorite part. There you go. And my wife that’s her favorite part. She’s going to be she’ll be on the phone a lot today. Yeah, she’s I’m ready for that. As she should. Yeah, absolutely. Uh all right, let’s start with movies. And this is there’s only two. Okay. And I’m going to I think help I don’t know. This movie these movies were released on the same day, July 17th, in the same year. So, they’re both the same year. I don’t know if that’ll help you guys, but the movies are Ant-Man and Train Wreck. They were both released in the same year on this date. Ant-Man. I don’t know. I like Train Wreck. I don’t know if I’ve seen it again. The theater. I enjoyed it. 2017. 2011. Wow. Allen’s closer. 2015. Really? This the weakness is movies within the last Yeah, that’s what we like. Enough with those, you know, TCM movies. I get 90s. You’re you’re even though that’s a strength for you, it’s Chris’s powerhouse. Yeah. All right. Happy birthday today to country singer Luke Bryan. Luke Bryan. Yeah, those those pants. And he sings pants. He’s got tight pants. Yeah. I don’t know what he sings. He’s um he’s on American Idol. American Idol. Yeah. Oh, okay. Well, that narrows it down for me. Yeah. You want to go first, Chris? He’s probably at Country of the Park 10 years at some point. 44. Okay. I think he’s a little older than that for some reason. He’s endearing to me. I don’t mind him. You like Luke? Yeah, I don’t know why. You found a a likeness for Luke Bryan. Yeah, I don’t know why. I probably shouldn’t, but 47 actually. Uh, you are closer. 49. My guy. All right. Hockey young s I say young. I shouldn’t have said that. Superstar. I didn’t want to give away any hints. Connor Baddard. Ah. Mhm. Maybe he is young. How young. Well, did you know that hockey apparently got rid of their All-Star game? No, they had like the Nations. They had the Nations game this year because of the uh Well, no, that wasn’t because the Olympics, but No. No. Yeah. For instead of the All-Star game, they had the Nations Games. Yeah. That’s kind of weird though. Yeah, but it was really good. No, it was. But yeah. Yeah. Anyway, so yes, we did know, I guess. 20 21 20. Uh, we have a correct answer. It goes to Christopher Lad, resident hockey guy. 20. Uh, David, how about hockey? Ah, Baywatch. Yeah, Night Rider. Ah, burger. Burger. I don’t know. Famous Germans David Hasselhoff and tennis 64 68. Uh, Chris is closer. 73 for the happy birthday to to OG Anobi. Okay. All right. All right. Huh. He’s the OG. I think it’s two. is not two. Uh, I’m going to go with probably be I’m going to say 28. 30. We have a correct answer. Okay. I know it’s me. You know it’s you. Yes. And it goes to Allan. Come on. I’m back, baby. He is back and ready to go. Got you loaded for your show. That’s right. Hope you have a great show and a big show and an awesome show. It is going to be that. Is the round table tomorrow by the way then? No. Well, I Well, they’re coming back tomorrow. Yeah, they’re they’re coming back tomorrow. We also have the They’re going to miss the championship. Yeah, we also have at the bottom of the hour Maxim Reno his interview during the game. A lot of people were gushing over that. So, we have that for you. And the big talk of the town, he’s making national headlines. Is it time to shut down Meek Clifford? Oh, yeah. Let him cook. Let him cook now. All right, that’s it for us. Thank you to everyone listening. Keep it right here cuz Allan Styles is nerds.
