Salary Cap Breakdown – Boston Celtics

About a week ago, this is what the Boston Celtics salary cap looked like for next season. They were not only over the cap, but also the luxury tax and both aprons. So, to avoid the apron penalties like restricted access to player acquisitions and limited trade flexibility, and to avoid a big tax bill, they traded Drew Holiday to the Portland Trailblazers for a couple second round picks and Anthony Simons. That lowered their total payroll a little bit, but then they followed that up by trading Chrisaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks for another second round pick and George Nang. That significantly lowered their payroll to below the second apron, avoiding the penalties and importantly saving their new owner nearly $200 million in luxury tax according to Bobby Marks. Finally though, they added a little bit more salary in the draft, selecting Hugo Gonzalez with the 28th pick. Now, despite being under the Second Apron, they’re still at over 200 million in payroll for next season. So, we’ll see if they make any other moves through the rest of the off season.

Here’s how the Boston Celtics finances have changed throughout the offseason. Did the 2nd apron lead to the Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis trades?
