76ers News & Rumors On Quentin Grimes Sign-And-Trade, Sixers Free Agent Targets & Trade Rumors

It’s mailbag time here on 76ers now by chat sports. I am Jake Chipper. Going to be taking your questions, hot takes, opinions, and more on the 76ers here during the NBA offseason. If you did not get on today’s mailbag, guys, be sure to subscribe. Check out the community tab of the YouTube page. That is where we post our mailbag calls to get your questions and more to be answered right here on the show. So, subscribe, turn on those notifications as well. And speaking of hitting that sub button, we take a look at the most subs picked up in the month of July among all NBA channels here at Chat Sports. Knicks now with a huge lead over everybody else at 1.4K, but after that, really anybody’s game. And right here, 76ers now currently in fourth place, but only about 21 subs behind Golden State Warriors today. And then eventually we can start catching up to the Miami Heat Report as well. So let’s do it. Sixers fans, I know we can be the top channel, NBA channel here at Chat Sports because Sixers fans are so passionate. If you’re looking for a place to get Sixers coverage every single day, we got you covered right here on the show and you get to have fun videos like this where you guys get to get involved as well. So without further ado, let’s start the mailbag with a couple of questions here that both had to do with Quinton Grimes. First coming in from Rahamali asking, can we sign and trade Quinton Grimes for Obie Topphen? And then we got another question from Jotrage who also asked about a sign and trade with Quinton Grimes, but this one for Jonathan Kaminga saying he is the best fit at the power forward position. So, we’re going to kind of answer these both in the same topic because obviously they are both dealing with a Jonathan or a Quinton Grimes sign and trade. Before we talk about Obi-Wan and Jonathan Kaminga though in these signing trades, one thing to know when it comes to a possible sign and trade with Quinton Grimes is there’s an NBA rule and makes it very, very difficult to sign and trade these restricted free agents. It’s called the baseear compensation rule. And to kind of simplify it for you guys, whatever salary that Grimes gets in a signin trade, say the team that wants to sign Grimes, that wants to trade for him, wants to give him $20 million a year, he only counts as $10 million for salary matching purposes, right? So, for example, if the Sixers wanted to take back a player who was making $14 million a season, they would have to give Grimes $28 million. And the team that wants to trade for Grimes would have to be okay giving him $28 million because of those salary matching rules. So, it’s a little bit confusing, but just know it makes it more complicated when trying to get these signing trades done with restricted free agents. But, let’s go through each of these options. Obi Toppin and Jonathan Kaminga. Look for Obie Toppin, I think on a base level, he would be a great fit on the Sixers team, sliding in there at the four. A super athletic. I think true four who can at the three a little bit. A good defender as well. Has shown a little bit creating off the dribble, though that would not be his main role. He’s really a catch and shoot three guy on offense. Someone who can use that athleticism for crazy putback dunks, flying through the air for lobs. I mean, we saw it in the Pacers run to the NBA Finals this year. He was a very very key piece that mostly comes off the bench, but I think on this team could be a very good starter as well and just gives you that presence that you don’t really have at that for spot, that physicality, that uber athleticism, somebody who can rebound the ball as well. So, I would love the idea of trading for OB to Topin. Shot 36 and a half% from three this past season as well. Shot 40% from three the season before that. But this one does not really seem possible to me. Even if the Pacers do have a down year and they decide, you know, you could maybe think about a trade later on, but in terms of signing trade, would they want to trade Tophin right now? Uh, I don’t really think so. Even if they did though, that base year compensation rule I was talking about makes it difficult because I brought up the $14 million as an example. Obie Toppin makes $14 million this year. So, to get a signage rate to work, the Pacers would have to be okay giving Grimes $28 million a season. Uh, I just don’t think there’d be any scenario in which the Pacers are willing and want to do that. They have Andrew Nehard already. They have Eron Smith already. Uh, there’s no world where I see that happening. Now, the Jonathan Ka things a little bit more interesting. Another restricted free agent who’s facing similar issues to Quinton Grimes in terms of not being able to get a contract done yet. There is some talk that he could be back with the Warriors on a smaller deal and then traded later on at the deadline. then that makes sense because then you don’t have to deal with that base year compensation rule in the sign and trades. Um, look, Grimes for Kaminga, I think it would work uh moneywise. I I think the base year compensation, you know, for each of them, it kind of cancels it out since it’s they’re both restricted free agents in signing trades. But I’m going to be honest, uh I would not want to trade Quinton Grimes away for Jonathan Kaminga. I don’t think he’s a very good basketball player. And my good friend Smitty who runs the Warriors channel has said time and time again like watching Jonathan Kaminga play basketball is just a hard thing to do. He is just not an efficient effective smart basketball player. And I just take a look at the efficiency numbers and the general numbers over his career. Yeah, the scoring’s gone up and you know somebody who can put in 15 a game, five rebounds sure looks good on surface but really not a good defender. Really doesn’t have a good handle. a three-point shot has gone down and down and down to the point where he shot just 30 and a half percent from three this past season and only 32% from three the season prior. There’s a reason the Warriors do not want to pay him big money because he’s looking for 30 plus million dollars on a new deal because he is still a young player and a former high draft pick. The other problem here with Kaminga is he wants to be one of the main staples on the offensive side of the ball for whatever team ends up signing him. I do not want to feature Jonathan Kaminga heavily on this offense and have him be the guy, right, that you want to go out there and get you a bucket. That’s just not going to contribute to a lot of winning basketball. So, I’d much rather have Quinton Grimes on the roster even if this was on the table and everything works out moneywise. Uh, I am not giving up Quinton Grimes for Kaminga. I think Grimes can make a much better contribution to winning as a floor spacer. as someone who is also a much better defender. I think Quinton Grimes just the better player honestly at this point in each of their careers. Maybe you disagree with me though. That’s totally fine. If you do, let me know right now in the comment section. Who would you rather have, Quinton Grimes or Jonathan Kaminga? You can let your voices be heard. That is what we love to do here on this show. Before we get to some of the other questions, got to tell you guys about this insane, insane deal with our friends at Fanatics on this Sweet Sixers cut off hoodie. It’s a perfect thing to wear all year round. Whether it’s a little bit warm out, a little bit cold out, this is always something you can break out of the closet. And not only does it look really dope, but it’s on sale down from $100 to just 35. That is an insane deal and the best deal you are going to find on really any Sixers merchandise option. We tell you about a lot of great deals here on the show. This is the best one I’ve seen by far and probably the best one we’re going to see for a while. But it won’t last forever. They’re flying off the shelves, so take advantage while you still can. again down from $100 to just 35. You got go to chatsports.comixershoodie to get your hands on this great deal. Again, chatsports.com/sixershood. That’ll be in the comment section and description of today’s mailbag. Let’s get to the next question here from Goodn Night Pocket. Is it worth it to bring back Quinton Grimes if it means VJ Edgecom has to come off the bench? So, VJ Edgecom when he’s played has looked very, very good in summer league. And I’ve seen some people throw out the idea of having him start for this team as we head into next season. Look, I think no matter what, you got to bring back Quinton Grimes as long as he’s not trying to get $25 million a season. I think you can get him from 16 $18 million somewhere in that range. I would start Quinton Grimes. Personally, I don’t think it’s a problem to bring VJ Edgecom off the bench. I know he was a third overall pick. I know he’s looked good in summer league when he’s been out there, but he still has a lot of developing to do in his game. I don’t think you need to throw him out there right away. Now, that doesn’t mean he can’t play big minutes just because he doesn’t start, but I think as long as the team is healthy, now granted with the Paul George injury stuff with Jared McCain coming off a major injury, maybe he does get forced into a larger role right away regardless of whether or not Quinton Grimes is back in his starting. But I feel most comfortable having VJ come off the bench. That athleticism, that defense can still make an impact on the game. I don’t see need to rush him right away. And if he’s good off the jump, you keep increasing his role and that’s tremendous for this team. But I would not pass on Grimes. And I I wouldn’t say it’s not worth it to bring back Grimes if FJ does come off the bench. I think that’s honestly a pretty good role for him uh to start his career again. He can still make a big impact. I would not be worrying about that. Get to a free agency question here. This one’s coming from Philly Zone 215. Would Trey Lyles be a good option at Power forward? Yes. So we talked about Trey Lyles a bit here on the show. Sixers do have one open roster spot as of this recording. I imagine it’s going to go to Quinton Grimes. Now, they could trade Andre Drummond to open up another roster spot. If they do, could that roster spot go to Trey Lyles? And I would like the signing, you know, for a vet at this point in the offseason as we’re getting into late July here. Like you’re not getting huge impact players and Trey Lyles, someone that can play the four spot, bring you a little bit of a different skill set than you have in a lot of your guys at the four already. Sixers done a decent job to bring in some rebounding, bring in some athleticism, some experience with Janai Broom at that four spot, right? Some of the other guys they signed as well. They don’t really have like a true bonafide floor spacer. I know Jai Broom has been shooting the ball pretty lights out in summer league, but that remains to be seen if he can do that once the games start mattering even more. Trey Lios shot just 34% last year, but look, over the course of his career, he’s been a pretty reliable three-point shooter. Not going to do a whole lot outside of that, but a good vet. He’s experienced. Uh, I know Daryl my said he wanted to get more athletic during the offseason and uh, certainly signing Trey Lyles has not particularly accomplished that, but I think again a smart vet who can bring you that three-point shooting and three-point spacing at the four, which you don’t really have at all right now in any of your big men, especially since you just lost Gershan Yabaselli. But I really wouldn’t mind that at all uh as a sliding just to get another guy in there that can just you know play smart basketball do some things the fundamentals right and of course shoot the ball as I did mention Tyler Redern 7780 coming in with the question are we going to end up trading Drummond and Kelly Ubé. Yes talked about this recently on the show as well. It really does line up that Kelly and Andre are probably going to be gone maybe sooner rather than later. Although I think definitely by the trade deadline as well, especially with what Daryl my had to say regarding the Sixers possibly upgrading during the year. This is what my had to say about the Eastern Conference and the Sixers this season. I think it’s open in the East. I think that’s a fair characterization. I do obviously think that we weren’t the only team that’s unfortunately gone through a lot of tough injuries. that’s open some things up, but we’re going to have to prove that we’re with those upper echelon teams in the East. But we do feel like if all things come together, we can be right there. We’ve given ourselves a lot of flexibility to upgrade the team during the year if things are going as well as we all hope. Focus on that last line right there. We’ve given ourselves flexibility to upgrade the team during the year if things are going as well as we hope. So, it’s pretty clearly Darren my saying, “Yeah, we’re going to be looking to make some moves as long as this team is winning some games.” And what is that flexibility that he’s given this team when you look at the player salaries, right, and their ability to make trades? I think a lot of the flexibility is the fact that they’re not in the second apron, which is very, very big for making trades. It allows you to aggregate player salaries. So, what player salaries could they combine? Well, you’re probably not trading Embiid, Paul George, Maxi, BJ Edgecom, Jared McCain. I don’t think anyone wants Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon, Trendon Watford certainly could be a trade in there, but you just signed him and his boys with Tyrese Maxi. I imagine you want him for at least a full season only making $2.4 million anyways. Not a huge amount to increase the salary that you get back. So, it’s really Kelly Ubé at that $8.3 million and Andre Drummond at that $5 million. Those are your most tradable pieces, guys at least will have some value as well. And with those salaries, again, kind of the leaders in the clubhouse, if you will, uh, as your trade chips heading into the season, I do think both end up getting traded at the deadline. I think the Sixers have a better season. Come deadline time. They’re looking to make one more upgrade. I don’t think Andre Drummond’s a big part of this rotation. I hope Adam Bona really steps up this season and hopefully Embiid stays healthy. We’ll see. And Kelly Ubé, someone you could upgrade from, right? Like I like Kelly Ubé. I like what he brings. He’s athletic. He plays defense. He’s hard-nosed. He’s a fan favorite. He fits the culture, but the offense is just too inconsistent. Shoots 30% from three that just can’t have that when it comes to postseason time and you need players out there on the floor that are well respected on both sides of the ball. So, I could see both of them definitely getting moved at the trade deadline. Last one here on today’s mailbag coming in from Gary Alet 7477 and Gary asking about Damen Lillard. Should we go for Dame? Of course, Damen Lillard coming off the torn Achilles for Milwaukee was bought out, so he’s free to sign with whatever team he does choose and can kind of rehab with that team for a season and then join that team the year after. He signs like a two-year deal with them. Uh Damon Philly just doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. Now, Dame still playing at a at a pretty high level. you know, the time that he spent in Milwaukee, they certainly didn’t reach the heights they were hoping. When they paired Dame Lillard up with Giannis onto Dmpo, but still a good player, but look, he’s getting older. I believe he’s about 35 years old, just coming off the Achilles tear. The Sixers have Tyrese Maxi, you have Jared McCain, you hopefully have Quinton Grimes, you have VJ Edgecom, excuse me. It just really doesn’t make a lot of sense uh for the Sixers to go in this direction. Plus, they can only offer Dane the minimum. Uh there’s other teams out there that can give him the mid-level uh at at about that $5.2 million mark. He’s been tied to the Celtics. That would be interesting for the league. Dame and Tatum both coming off Achilles Teres rehabbing together and then he comes in as a starting point guard for that team in the 2026 season. Uh could be interesting to monitor and we’ll see where Dame does end up going. But uh definitely does not make sense for Philly. I would not be looking in to Dame at all for this squad. All right, that’ll do it for today’s mailbag. Again, if you want to get on a future mailbag, got to hit that sub button so you can stay up to date with when we do put those mailbag calls out. And if you enjoyed today’s show, if you made it up to this point in the video here at the end, hopefully that tells me you at least enjoyed it a little bit. If you did, give me a real one down below. I’ll be giving a shout out to everybody who types a real one down in the comments section.

  2. You need to bring back QG and trade him later….1 year $14M. VJ is a starter day 1. I don't trust Nurse figuring out an effective rotation

  3. Sign grimes trade McCain for obi he’s a better fit for the sixers and would be and immediate upgrade at the 4 and could start right away let’s do it

  4. A guy who I'm intrigued by is GG Jackson from Memphis, and not only is Grimes a perfect fit next to JA in Memphis, but with the rise of Jaylen Wells and the Grizz bringing back Aldama, GG is someone who I would be trying to gauge in his availability, even though I highly doubt Memphis would move him, I would still try

  5. Grimes is the significantly better player on both ends, but more importantly his value is much higher than Kuminga's. Grimes will be a trade asset, Kuminga could prove hard to move and get anything you want back.

  6. It ain't about who better it's which one fit better for the Sixers Grimes don't add up with the dept on the Sixers with their back court he ain't better than Massey or McClain or the 3rd pick VJ

  7. I'm telling you my 76ees or Daryl. Morey, don't know what the hell he's doing. Look how Bradley Beal signed a deal for 2 years, 11 million. You're gonna tell me we couldn't have done that signing. We're all hoping for this dude, Quinton Grimes, to be our savior.
