Noe Essengue Has Mixed Bag in Summer League | AK Wants Giddey & Coby Back Long Term
That’s two game two summer league games in for no SNK and it’s been a pretty mixed bag. Me and P discuss his performance so far in summer league. Musella says he wants to be the best player ever and aka comments on Josh Giddy and Kobe White’s futures. We’re going to talk about all that and more on today’s Locked on Bulls. You could tell that the physicality kind of got to all the Bulls. The guard play was absolutely terrible. And then the second one from No Essen where he got a double double, he got 10 rebounds, still a block. Like he was all over the court in that one. You could tell very early in that game that he wanted to assert himself a little bit more. Now, he did get hurt towards the end of that game. Nothing major, a thigh contusion, nothing too serious there. I do think that there’s a chance that they shut him down for summer league after just that. You never know with the Bulls. But, uh, how do you feel about the two games from no SNK so far? Listen, game one was it looked like his first ever summer league game. looked like his first ever competition versus, you know, um I guess not first ever, but it looked like he was getting used to it. The entire team looked horrendous. Modest was just chucking shots up. He was like, “F it, I’m out here. Let me let him fly.” Um and and game two, I think you saw him be a little bit more in control. Still didn’t shoot the ball great, but but you saw him be a little bit more in control. You saw him um that the first game was just filled with turnovers. Second game, three turnovers. It was insane, bro. like it was and that was such a wild night cuz like I end up having to take my daughter to like the the immediate care cuz she been coughing and and a little bit under the weather. She fine. But like that was the better part of my night than watching the second half of that Bulls game. Like that’s how bad it got. Um but no man, I think uh no is 110% completely a raw player and there’s going to have to be a ton of development. But I do like the fact that, you know, he said at the end of the first game, I need to be more aggressive and I need to be more intentional with my movements. And I think we saw that in the second game, which is something that, listen, P. Will has been saying it for seven years at this point and we still haven’t seen this. So, I mean, like literally, if it took from one game to the next, we moving in the right direction. Yeah. I mean, and I think with Noah too, it is a thing of like he’s 195 pounds. Yeah. And I tell you what, that 610, I don’t know, bro. He may he may be 6’11, bro. I mean, he made him 7 foot when it’s all said and done, fam. He looks bigger than 16. Either that or everyone’s short that he’s playing with out there. Oh, legitimately, that was the one thing in the first game of summer league I was like, bro, like he don’t look big, but he looks really, really tall. Yeah. Like he is towering over everyone on the court except No, he’s even taller than Lachland. He looked taller than Lachland. He’s taller than Lachland and he looks taller than 16. Yeah. So So is he 7 foot already? Like did we get Wimby on accident? Like is he done growing? I’m telling you, we’ll see. We’ll see. But I I I love I love the way that he came out in game two. It sucks that of course it ended with him knocking knees and and sitting down, but uh overall like you just saw how he could if he if he does get into the rotation, how he can make an impact cuz I tell you what, the way that he was he was deter uh people from I know he only had one steel but even just the presence of him how he people didn’t pass when they saw okay he has a lane here. Um his his ability to change shots with his length as well was something that was evident. And I’ll tell you what, I know Carter Bryant is getting all and rightfully so, all the the praise for what he’s done. Like he abs Carter Bryant has been a nightmare defensively to watch him go out and terrorize play. And it’s something old school about watching somebody who takes pride in. Oh, I’m about to shut you down. I may not score, but you’re not going to score on me either. Um, but Noah Essen was more aggressive defensively and you could see how he could switch. He guarded a point guard. I saw him get switch on the shooting guard. He guarded a four. And so you could start seeing how this is all going to fit together once he’s able to consistently play on an NBA level. If he’s able to bring some of that switchability, that’s something that we that we’ve lacked for a while and that ability to guard the rim. You see that path form and that’s all I really wanted to see in summer league. Yeah. Listen, the the the goal is to see, okay, where are you starting at with this young man? Guess what? He’s probably not going to have a ton of playing time to start the season. Like I think that’s kind of where we’re starting at with him. I would expect him to get some time in the G- League as well and try and try and build himself up, get himself used to playing against, you know, NBA level competition. That’s that one step below. Like I I think that there’s going to be a lot of development done for no assay here to start his career. But you can see and and I think this is the thing. Hey, is it what I wanted to see was what we saw from Modis last year. Does it matter what he’s doing in summer league? Are these things that he can do in a real game? what we saw in that second game to me, how he was getting to the rim, how he was defending around the rim, how he was able to uh uh um have that switchability like you mentioned, like those are things that see him doing in his rookie season at the end of the season. It’s not him, you know, going out there and getting 15 shots and draining threes and oh my god, we going to put this dude in the lineup. Like those guys usually don’t pan out because like Tony Snell and the Doug Mcders and stuff like that when you watched them, it was like oh my god, look at this. How are we not using him? when he did Antonio Blake and he had a big summer league game, right? It’s like, yeah, you’re never going to get these shots in a real NBA game, though. Exactly. What we’re seeing from nowhere are things that I think in a real NBA game on the current team that we have, you I could see him being utilized in that role. While we have a little bit of time here in this segment and we’re talking about summer league, how do you feel? How have you felt about Yuki? I saw somebody say this and I do feel like that Yuki’s fun like watching him he he’s a phenomenal passer. I do I will give him that. I don’t think he’s better than anyone on our team and that’s very tough to say, but I do think he’s he’s fun to watch and he’s cooking in summer league and I think he’s a really good passer. Alen Terry would cook Yuki. Freaking Julian Phillips would cook Yuki. Javon Carter would cook Yuki. like he’s not making this team. I like him though. I like him a lot. I want to see him stay around in the G- League cuz I do think his his passing will be good for players like like Lachland as they try to develop and stuff like that. But yeah, I I I there’s one crazy person who’s left comments. He’s like Yuki’s clearly going to be a better passer than Josh Giddy. It’s like Yuki got good vision. He got great great vision, but it’s like that size is just it’s going to be a detriment to him. you could tell. But I mean, not to say like we’ve learned. I mean, we saw JJ Barrera absolutely cook LeBron. Uh, so like in the playoff series, so like you I’m I’m all for him sticking around and developing, but right now he’s not he’s not on the path to make this team at all. How you feel about Lachland? Um I I like Lachlan’s game. I think Lachland is our is um you know, Australian or do like moves moves a little bit better, but it’s like moves considerably better. We we literally knew what he was going to be. He’s a solid rebounder and he finishes well around the rim. Like again, he’s another player to me where cuz Lachland is how old? 23, I think. Is he 23, 24 somewhere in there, right? Yeah, somewhere. No, 21. He’s only 21. It’s a mustache that makes him look old. It’s that mustache. Mustache got shot. That man looking 35. Uh, he look like he got a solid 401k built up already. Like, you mean like he’s got excellent stock options with a few children, both legitimate and illegitimate. Bro, you know what I mean, bro? He’s got a family in the South that he don’t talk to. Uh, but no, I I I like Lachlan’s game and I think he knows his game and that’s something that I mean, this is probably not a great comparison, but it’s something that I think fits Bulls fans. He’s very Zack Collidish and like this is what you gonna get. Yeah. And that’s all it is. Like here we go. So if if he gets an opportunity to play at the NBA level, like I feel like he’s the 12 and 10 that he can give you in summer league or in in NBL or in college or wherever he plays basketball. Yeah, he’s going to be the next, you know, we we always have that big that really puts up numbers in uh in the G- League and everybody’s like, why doesn’t he bring up come up? He’s he’s going to he’s going to put up some good numbers in the G- League. He may even, you know, with injuries, something may get get some opportunity. It’s not that I can’t necessarily see him becoming a rotational player, but it’s not like he’s going to, you know, as it stands right now, it’s not like he’s going to be anything crazy, but I do like his toughness. I do like the fact, like you said, that he knows his game. There is something to be that young and know exactly what your strengths are, not try to do too much outside of those strengths. And it doesn’t seem like he’s pressing to prove anything in summer league. He’s just out there to play his game, and I respect that. What I love is the um got to choose that word wisely. um the the body mass that he has uh already at 21 years old. He’s he’s clearly I think they got him listed at 236 when I see him on the court. Now again, summer league, there’s a lot of dudes out there that are undersized and stuff like that. So maybe that’s the issue, but he looks like he is just bigger than everyone else out there sizewise. And I He’s probably pushing 240 already. Yeah. Yeah. in and in and a and a and a healthy 240 because like a healthy 240 jacked. Yeah. So, we’ll see what happens with Lachland. I wouldn’t be mad I’m not mad at him continue to have an opportunity to develop here in Chicago and we’ll see what happens with that one. But talk about developing. One of the players that we all are hoping is going to hit a nice development in year two is Modus Buselis who we’re going to talk about him and his comments on CHSN. But first, we do got to get into a message from forgot who the message from from Hungaroo right after this. Let’s be honest, meal planning and grocery shopping can be overwhelming. [Music] An extra item in a free box for life. That’s the same thing Zion said in Mariah Mills. Listen, I’m just saying it’s it’s Zion Williamson and porn. Bro, did you see the chick who got arrested for sending 1,488 messages after one date to a guy saying that she loved him and they literally ar Oh, no. And he came home. She was in his house and they arrested her. Well, I was going to say, yeah, that I was I felt like you were leaving a very important part of the story. Yeah. It’s like, hey, bro. Oh, by the way, she was in his bed when he got home. Like, I don’t did that. That’s crazy. Shay said, “Sign me up for that.” Uh with that said, uh Modis Buselis was interviewed by CHSN and one of the quotes of course that everybody’s going to run with is that he talked about and said that he feels that he can be the best player in the NBA. That that’s the mentality that he operates everything with that. He can be the best player ever. That’s the type of confidence and mindset that he has to have. You know, we could we can make a conversation on how good Modus can be all day long, but I tell you what, I want every player on my roster to have that mindset. How you feeling, Pat? Here’s here’s I I go back to something that Kobe Bryant said once. Rest in power. Um, everybody’s not out there to be good. Some people out there for a check. And once you realize that, it makes the game a heck of a lot easier. Modest is out there to be good. And when you have a player like that, especially in this modern NBA, you need somebody who is a leader like that in this on the on your team. Now, um you hope that he does become the best player on this team. Like you do hope that he he becomes, you know, the the number one option on this team, but at a minimum, if he’s the guy that is pushing the number one option, like that’s not a bad place for you to be either. Like, if he’s the guy who’s going out there and he’s like the Joe Keem Noah of this situation where, yeah, he’s averaging a double double, but he’s not putting up 45 points a night. I mean, like, okay, is he the guy that is the leader that this team looks to? Like, those are the things to me that I think make the biggest difference in in team mindset. And it’s just something truthfully that I feel like the Bulls have not had in a long time. I love the confidence that Mis has in himself. And I I don’t know if you saw this, Hayes, but um Michael Wilbond was talking about this on ESPN 1000 when he was on with Wan Sylvie. He said he’s talked to a lot of people around the league, like all stars around the league, and they look at Modest, and they go, there’s something about that kid that if he finds it, he’s going to be something special, and I really want to see how his career is going to go. So, to me, like he’s the kind of player that and I know what Billy Donov said during the during his interview, you know, they they’re trying to develop him into a leader. That’s just another quote to tell me. The Bulls also feel that he could be one of the best players in the league and they’re trying to get him as much experience as being the number one option as they can. Yeah. I mean, I I do think the like anybody should see something in Modest just with the mentality alone and how much that he works as like there’s something special in him. Now, how much of that ends up coming out on the basketball court, what he ends up turning into the basketball court, that that’s determined by a few factors and he’s going to have to continue to work on it. But I said it and I think we both said it when we drafted when we drafted Modest. thing is that you got somebody who whatever their potential is, you can bet that he’s going to do everything in his power to reach that potential. And you need guys like that on your roster. You need guys that you trust are going to work day in and day out on their craft to get better every single day that aren’t going to rest on their laurels, rest on hype or anything like that. I fully believe that Modis is somebody who sees the talk around some players around the NBA and how they talk about him. He says, “Okay, cool. I I I love that. Thank you for that. But when I’m on the court, I’m about to cook you. Yeah. And that’s what you need, right? You you need that type that type of player, especially when you’re still trying to establish a culture. You’ve switched your direction. So, like I I I see the sky’s is the limit for Modis. Uh he of course we’ve talked a lot about the things that he needs to improve on in year two to continue that step on that path. But the sky’s is the limit. He just has to keep working on it. He has to keep doing it. And hopefully Billy Donovan uh recognizes it too and just adds more to Modest’s plate to see how he deals with it. Uh Greg I always go to this quote from Greg Papovic. He he described development uh once as as Legos. He was like, “Well, you you you lay your base down first and then the next year you’ll stack you you’ll say, “All right, bet. Now let’s see what you do in isolation. The year after that, all right, let let’s see what you do in catch and shooting on in the three-point range. The year after that, all right, bet. Now I’m about to run my offense through you.” So like you you just steadily stack and add layers to what you’re trying and how you’re trying to develop them and that that you you have to do that. They have to show you that they’re ready first and some of that also has to be like all right let’s let’s force this growth a little bit. We feel like he’s ready for it. Let’s go ahead and and do that. And I really hope that through Wes Unell, Dan Craig, Billy Donovan, whoever that they really are are looking at that path for Modis and are getting ready to add something to his plate heading into next year and seeing how he deals with it. Yeah. And I think that’s that’s a lot of what Billy talked about, you know, with with even having Modis play in summer league because there’s a lot of people that looked at him was like, “What the heck is he playing for?” Like clearly he’s an NBA player. Although, tell you what, boy, he looked bad. Everybody looked bad, too. Like, hey, but he looked extreme. I was like, “Oh, okay. All right. One-on-one opportunity with a dude that’s not going to make an NBA team this year.” Oh, that’s a turnover. Oh, no. That’s not That’s not good. But the the I I love the fact that the talent almost isn’t the question for M. Like they’re like, “Okay, can can you be a leader though?” Like, “Can you take on the pressure of being the face of a team? Can you take on the pressure of being a number one guy?” Like that’s how it sounded like how Billy Donovan was talking about this young man. He’s like, “Listen, there’s untapped potential there. there’s an opportunity for him to to do so much in this league and we truly the reason we wanted to bring him into summer league is we truly wanted to see how he could be you know as that as that number one guy as that number one option the Bulls are putting a lot on the modest plate and I think it’s why like when they talk about the summer of 2026 now right you’re probably not going out there looking for the best player if if you find a way to develop modest you’re going out there looking for a guy that complements what his game is and I think even with you know one of the topics we’re going to get in here coming up next. You know, AK wanting to keep Giddy and Kobe here. You know, you talk about compliments, that’s really how it feels like they’re building this team around him. And Mis, if Modus wants to be the best, the opportunities there for him. I don’t know if he’ll be the best to ever play the game. That’s that’s a that’s a bit of a stretch. That’d be a heck of a jump from year one to year two. But I think that you can’t talk about somebody who’s working that hard and is that focused on their game. like Mugs see him on the stream and they’re like that’s who he is. Every time I see him on the stream I’m like he’s he got more muscle. Is he heavier? Is he like seeing him even in summer league it was like oh he definitely been working all off season. That’s fat. Yeah. He’s been at the advocate working and then and that and that’s really good that he’s willing to put into that because it could have been very easy to be like let me let me take a couple of weeks off. Let me focus on I think he talked about it. I think he said like his week off was like maybe the week right the weekend right after they got eliminated and he said he went to go do something and he was right back at the gym afterwards. Like that’s the type of mentality that you want that is like, “Yeah, I’m going to take a I’m going to take a weekend, but I got to get right back in the lab. I got to work. We got to we got to we got to do stuff next season.” So, you know, Modus is Modus is a really good example of what this team could be. Um, like I said, I just I’m at the point where I just I don’t want to don’t want to get too excited about it too quickly. I I got really excited after year one of Lari and that blew up in my face. I’m just I’m just taking a little little calmness on it right now. No, I mean I think that’s not to compare him as players. I’m just saying that just No, but I think the thing with Lowry was year two he kept dying. Like he had a great year too as well. I think it wasn’t until year three he really kept That’s No, he had so many injuries. Yeah. Like year one he was really good. Year two is his best season until he ended up getting with the Jazz, but he just kept getting hurt and it was like man if we could get Lowry Zack and who was it at that point was on the team at that point? Like I think I think they’re one of those Brandon Roy stories. It’s like they got like 50 games together in total. I don’t know how the record the record probably ain’t that good when together. But the Brandon Roy Greg Oden LaMarcus Aldridge record is like a 94% win percentage. Yeah. I mean the problem was it was like five games. But yeah, Greg Oden was uh was old and dead. I ain’t going to lie to you, bro. Like I know how good he was in college, but there’s no way you looked at that face and you was like long NBA career. I mean, Al Jefferson was old in the face, too, and had a long NBA career. Yeah, but Al Jefferson came into the league at a time where, like, Muzz was still having old face. Like, Greg only came into the league like two years later. That two years was a big difference, though. You’re starting to get the baby faces in the league by the end. That is hilarious. I don’t know. I had no point on it. Hey, man. Uh, we got we gonna keep this thing moving along. Uh, we got to talk about AK and Giddy. um or a AK talking about Giddy and Kobe White’s contracts and uh the desire to possibly keep them both around, which I think at this point only makes sense. We’ll talk about that. But first, we got to get into a conversation from FanDuel. Oh, that’s the wrong one. Summer sports are in full swing and whether you’re all about baseball under the lights, golf on the green, or high stakes soccer action. Went to my first Chicago Fire game the other day. That was uh it was pretty fire. We’re we’re not that talented, but it was pretty fire. Uh FanDuel is the best way to make every game even more exciting. You’re already following the action. More locked on Bulls coming up next. I ain’t got it. That was a quick switch up. That was the first time I had to do was just the switch up of the system. I’ll catch it. I’ll catch it. That That was a quick one. That was a uh Ed Reed was shorter than I thought it was going to be, bro. went to that fire game, bro. Was incredibly entertaining. The fans stand the entire time. And I looked down at the dude that’s like one of the sponsors for the fire and I was like, “Are we good?” And he was like, “No, we got like two wins.” I was like, “Dang it, another Chicago team.” Uh, but with that said, Pat, last topic of the day. AK was interviewed during one of the summer league games. Can’t remember the first or second summer league game in which he talked about he was asked about Josh Giddy and Kobe White. and he says that you he wants to see Josh Gidd and Kobe here for years to come. Now, I always say things like this, like, what do you expect him to get on a summer league broadcast and say, “Yeah, you know, we offered Josh Giddy$ 25 million. He’s not taking it. Screw him.” Uh, like he’s not going to say that, right? Like, that’s not going to happen. But for taking his his words at face value, how do you feel about AK’s comments? Uh, listen, I I think that the the desire to get a deal done is there probably. Um, I think at this point the Kobe White deals that could have been gotten are off of the table. So why would you want to move them? I think again the the conversation though could be that’s how he feels right now. We don’t know what the deadline is going to bring. All right. We don’t know what next off season is going to bring. Like there’s so much that you know with with the Kobe White situation where you know you’re in the last year of this deal and it’s a very team friendly deal and I don’t think that Listen, let’s be real dog. AK don’t want to get rid of nobody that’s on the team. He just ends up having to because it gets to a point where it’s like all right this clearly not working. Like he never wants to trade anybody. We don’t trade people. We just started trading people again. It’s funny cuz he came in and he traded everybody and then he’s like his guys. He’s like, “I’m good. I’m good. Three years. I’m good. No trades for three years. We’re good. We’re good.” No trades for three years. Now he’s just doing one of one player swaps. That’s by uh uh um I forget the outlet that did it. It’s one of the the bull specific websites. And they did a u you know like trade scenarios that could happen. I think it was for Kobe White or something like that. And it was like the the best trade scenario or the first one was like the AK special and it was just a one for one, a player for a player. And I was like, what a great name for this. The AK special is exactly the kind of trades that we’re going to get. Like, what are we trading Kobe White for? Another young promising player. Yeah, exactly. One for one. One for one trades. That’s what you’re looking for here. Uh, but yeah, I mean, listen, I’m sure that AK and and I’ve said this on on my platform, too. Like I’m sure AK wants to keep everybody now. Clearly there’s a price or something in there. Otherwise, you would have just given Josh Giddy once. He wants like now now you decide to learn how to negotiate. I’m not mad at it. You know, it is what it is there. Um, now you just got to find find your path, find your dollar amount that you feel is worth it and keep it pushing at that point in time. And I think we’ll get that resolution sooner rather than later. Uh, keep in mind this could go all the way to October 1st. October 1st is the deadline. We got we could have another few months of this, y’all. So, there you go on that. I doubt it’s going to I think what’s going to happen here, Pat, is that one of the restricted free agents is going to sign or get signed and traded and then you’re going to see the other bigname restricted free agents that are still out there. They’re going to their deal is going to follow closely thereafter. Yeah, I I do think this is one of the um this is a situation very similar to what’s going on with the second round picks in the NFL of like second somebody crosses the line, we’re going to see the floodgates open. you just haven’t had any of the restricted free agents to this point cross the line because there’s no consensus. I understand trying to get the Jaylen Suggs deal. Um Jaylen Suggs had a lot more consistent season when he got that deal done. You know what I mean? It’s something to be said when you’re on the same team. Like when you switch teams that makes it a little bit harder, right? Like Quinton Grimes switch. He’s on his third team but o over his rookie scale contract. It makes a little bit harder. Josh Giddy’s on his second. Now, Cam Thomas, I’m a little bit surprised that the Brooklyn Nets are playing it this way with Cam Thomas, to be 100% honest with you. But hey, they see that Danny Wolf tape, baby. They see that Danny Wolf tape. Danny Wolf was out there getting it getting active, baby. Bro, Danny Wolf said, “This is my Super Bowl.” Danny Wolf was hooping, bro. I when I when I saw him do a hesy step back, Jay, I was like, “Oh, Danny Wolf ain’t coming here to play.” He said, “Forget this being summer league. This the finals.” Hey, bro. I ain’t going to lie to you. I saw that man hooping. I was like, uh, there’s a part of me that’s like, we could have had him. We had him. We just trade back in. You had They were calling. Everyone was calling. The Bulls are out there trying to sell for cash considerations, my boy. Yeah, we live off cash considerations, baby. You know how we do. Uh, but no, man. I’m I’m I’m still very excited about uh the opportunity of what this team could become. And hopefully AK does does get the Giddy contract done here soon. cuz I I feel like that kind of point guard is the piece that makes this team go and you just don’t have anybody else on the roster who is that kind of point guard. When The Wizards has A Brighter Future than the Bulls you know it’s a Sad Time. 🤦🏾♂️
Condolences on your family loss.
I really hope Noa works out. Bulls fans universally wanted a center or a solid big man. I predict all Bulls fans will be pissed about passing up Yang before the season ends
Noa his combination of switchability and speed on defense is gonna b fun to watch as it evolves. And If he hits his ceiling on defense, he will become an elite defender
Everyone is drunk on diss Pat. He has a role that has been decided by the coach. He is not at home dreaming of only defending the other team’s best wing. That’s fucking ridiculous. Do y’all not remember Jimmy’s role on the Bulls?! Guys have to stick to their roles. Duh. 🙄
Raise your hand, if you mad Pat has not developed into the monster we can all see. Keep your hand up, if you recognize in every sport, developing players is the Job of the coaching staff. That’s why players and actual basketball heads recognize Mark Jackson, not Steve Kerr. Why give the coaching staff credit for wins, then blame the players for losses?! Are we drunk, or just 🐂 💩ing?
He needs minutes starting off because he needs to develop and the only way he will is if he gets meaningful minutes yea you can put him in the G League so he learn the NBA way of playing but as far as his skills hell yea play him day 1
Condolences Haize. Big hug from Portugal
Sorry for your loss haize
Prayers for you and your family, Haize.
Perfect take on comparing to Pwill
At this point I need instant gratification but did you see juki with the pass.
Yuki hate kinda wild. So many times he got caught on switches on a big or bigger player and he made it hard for them to get the ball and usually he steals the pass. First game against the raptors whoever he was guarding he was having a tough time. in what i noticed whenever he checked into the game the offense flowed so much better and he is a great passer. there was a pass he made at the end of the first half to matas for an open jumper and he missed it at the buzzer but NO ONE guard wise was almost making that one extra pass for the betterment of the team. shooting wise he has struggled but its crazy to see someone his size able to compete. i dont think he is anything better than like g league or 10-12th man on the bench tho and only to check in in garbage time or if there is a lot of injuries
Luv💪🏾
Praying for you Haize!!! My condolences fam!
Noa looks mid right now
