This Just Took A MAJOR Turn… | Daily Grizzlies News & Rumors
Welcome back to this edition of Grizz Daily. I’m your host, Malik. And summer league is officially wrapped up for the Memphis Grizzlies. Uh the last game was last night uh when they played the Hawks. They lost 92 to 88. It was a pretty interesting game towards the end. Uh we saw some flashy plays from Cam Spencer, um Jamaack, just a just a few names. Gi Jackson, of course. Um these few names just to list off, but uh pretty interesting game. would have loved to see the Grizzlies come uh pick up the win. Obviously, the game really didn’t have any implications for the Grizzlies. At least I know the Hawks. Um had they won the game, it would have had a chance to make the summer league playoffs, but they fall just short of the top four. Uh if you didn’t know, summer league is a four um it’s a four team format. Uh used to be 18, but it’s a four team format now. So, the top four teams basically compete in the playoffs. So, the Grizzlies obviously aren’t in it. They finished 1 and three in Vegas. Um, just wanted to list off a few notes from summer league overall that I’ve noticed. Um, like I said, it’s pretty much over for the Grizzlies. They aren’t in the playoffs. So, Vegas is over and we are back to square one when it comes to Grizzlies basketball. So, some of the standouts that I want to uh shout out is Javon Small. He played in his his only game in Vegas and he put up a pretty respectable statline. He had a very good first quarter to start things out. So looking at it right here, he finished with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists. Uh shot five for 12 from the field, but shot three of seven for three and went four or five from the free throw line. Um he did all of this in I’m looking at it 24 minutes, 25 minutes. So, um, yeah, pretty productive game for Javon Smold. He looked really comfortable on the court, which is something that, um, was a big discussion going in, especially, uh, since it was discovered last second that Jaylen Wells was kept out of it. So, um, yeah, I mean, I like this. I like this flow of the game. I liked what he did. He kept he kept the ball on the string essentially because I’m looking right here. He only had one turnover. So, uh, shout out to him. Uh, defensively, I didn’t really see I didn’t really see too many things that were wrong. I may have missed over a lot, but I didn’t really see too much wrong with him. So, shout out to Javon Small. Really really think he’s he he he might turn out to be a good pickup for the Grizzlies after all. Uh, Ken Spencer was another player, 16 points, uh, four threes, uh, overall around the court. Didn’t really shoot the greatest, but he kind of found his rhythm later in the game. Uh, I believe he knocked down two threes in the fourth, maybe three, I’m not sure, but he found his rhythm later in the game and it came at a good time. Obviously would have hoped it led to a win. Uh, but it came at a good time, so shout out to him. And obviously Gi Jackson on the court, 13 points. Uh, didn’t shoot great. He shot five of 11, over three from three, and then um some other things on the court, two blocks, four rebounds. Uh, no turnovers, which is a good sign. Overall for the Grizzlies, they actually did pretty good this game when it came to Tunnels was only five committed as a team. Uh the only thing really with that game is um Jamaek and I and I I know I keep bringing his name up, but I really do think he’s a great fit for the team. He he’s he’s a hustle player, and you don’t come across those often. So, he’s a hustle player. He stood out to me. He stood out to a lot of people actually. This was I think this was opportunity for the people to see what he brings and it was a good showing. It was a very good showing from him and obviously I hope to see more of it. No telling where he’s going to be at. Um so so yeah, but those are just some of the standouts that I saw personally. Um some of the other names. Tyler Burton very good. Uh Philandra Fleming Jr. did pretty good this summer league. Um, yeah. I mean, I really don’t have any I really don’t have many problems with um with how the summer league went. And I know a lot of people are going to think otherwise, but at the end of the day, you have to remember it is summer league. This is not the final roster. This is not even a percentage of the final roster. So, we just have to you have to remember it’s summer league. Let’s relax. We still got a whole 82 game season ahead of us. So, please do not overreact because I saw a lot of people overreacting over summer league. I keep expressing summer league. So, um, yeah, I mean, I’m really I’m satisfied with what I saw. I saw the players that, you know, are gonna be key impacts to the team and saw what they do. Obviously, you know, Si Cow, a big name, um, that we wish we saw, but I had no complaints. I really don’t. I really don’t have many at all. Honestly, wish I saw more for the front court, but not really complaining at all. Um, but something during the game that really uh sparked my interest and I remember one of the commentators saying it was that uh Xi Jackson has um high potential and he has the very he has very good potential to be the third scorer, the third option on this team and it had me thinking where does GG fit on the team and so in my evaluation of GG over the course of a year including summer league He knows how to find his shot, but I feel like he forces his shot too much. I mean, I’m just being honest. There’s times where GG the three balls not falling. Granted, it’s open, but it just isn’t falling. So, that that’s a little bit of a concern for me with GG. That’s always been a bit bit of concern me when it comes to him. Um really just hoping that GG kind of finds it within himself to be like, “Hey, it’s not falling, so let me, you know, scoot up a little bit closer or find a closer shot.” Uh he’s more comfortable taking it to the paint, which is always a good sign. It’s something that um Coach Eelo has emphasized that he wants to see Gigi do more of. He’s allowing GG to do it more. Um yeah, so I I I really think GG will find his place on the team. Um, as far as a starting role, that’s going to be tough unless somebody doesn’t play as good or we really just decide that GG Jackson is better in the starting lineup than off the bench. But other than that, I think G Jackson is a great uh option on the second unit. Uh, I think he has the ability to be a spark plug player uh along with a guy like Scotty Pippen and Santi Alama. I think he really could become a spark plug on the team as long as he’s able to find his shot and just, you know, make the right decisions with the ball. I think he has great potential to find his place on the team as a good option and not just someone that’s, you know, sitting in the corner all the time and not knowing what to do with the ball. So, um, that’s that’s where I think G Jackson can really fit in on the team. Uh, I really don’t think otherwise. It really just matters about ease system. Yeah, obviously once we see more players and more games with the whole team, we’ll get it more. Obviously, health being one of the main factors in seeing all of that. So, we really just have to keep all that in mind. Other than that, I really really think GG can find his role in the team compared to other guys in the past that we thought the same thing for. So, I really I’m really keeping my whole time for GG. But, um, going back to going back to summer league, uh, one of the names that stood out to me, and I said it earlier, uh, Philandress Fleming Jr., uh, he had a very, very good summer league, and he had a very he it was a very quiet summer league, but he had a very good summer league. If you don’t know, um, Fleming went to Florida. uh he spent five years in college, but he finished his last season in Florida and um he was undrafted in 2022, so he spent some time overseas. Uh put us some pretty good numbers there and a lot of he had a lot of good performances and went under the radar. I mean, we’re talking about a guy who um in against the Trailblazers in some league, he put up a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Um, and then he’s a pretty good playmaker. And honestly, I liked what I saw for a guy that’s trying to find his role and prove himself back into the league. Now, honestly, the only thing that really, really, really, really concerns me, and it’s not even really a concern on his part. It’s more so a concern with the team. And I think a lot of people have to realize this when it comes to certain players because I see a lot of times a player will have a good summer league performance and then somebody be like the Grizz is really passed up on him. I think a lot of people have to realize a lot of these players that we see have great performances where you have to really think where are they going to fit on the team and I gotta be honest Fender Fleming Jr. I can see him being on the hustle, just working, but other than that, I think I don’t with the current state of the team right now, I don’t think there’s a place for him on the team. I’m just being honest. He’s great talent, great under the radar talent, but as far as being on the team and finding a role on the team in the main roster, that’s going to be very difficult because the Grizzlies still have needs. and those needs I don’t think you can necessarily get out of him, especially when there’s other guys that the team is already depending on. But that’s just a name that I feel like went under people’s radars and I’m willing to bring his name back up because he did very very good in some league and he deserves the recognition and he deserves to honestly get the opportunity to play for a team genally. Now, it’ll more likely be a rebuilding team if he wants consistent minutes. But I want I’m throwing it out here. He’s a name to watch out for because he brings a lot of intangibles to the game that I know a lot of good teams or a lot of rebuilding teams could really could really not necessarily build upon, but they could definitely use it in the near future. So, keep it keep eye on that name. He he might be something in the future and if he is, you know where you heard it from right here. But um before I wrap this up, just now that we’re in the point where we’re really just looking forward to the regular season and training camp, um want to just talk about, you know, keys to the to the regular season, you know, just things that I think if the as long as the Grizzlies are able to do, it’s a different ball game as far as being a contender. Uh one of the things I think the Grizzlies need to absolutely do, stay healthy. And that is going to be the main thing is staying healthy. For the past two, three years, we’ve had pretty good rosters that could have turned out to something, but always played to injuries. I don’t know whether that’s work ethic, workouts, conditioning, medical staff. The Grizzlies do need to figure it out. They are one of the teams in the They’re one of the few teams in the league that are injury riddled every time. And it’s always around the same point every year. It’s always around a high point and then they grow cold and then it’s happens again towards the end of the season and we’re looking at a first round, second round exit. So health is the main thing. Um I think the Grizzlies obviously you’re relying on your back court scorers to really get going. I mean including Jiren Jackson Jr. who was in the front court. But front court play is going to be absolutely key for the Grizzlies. Without good front court play, the Grizzlies are not going to make it far. In fact, if the Grizzlies without good front court play, the Grizzlies might not even might not even sniff a good playoff run if I’m being honest. So, you really have to depend on the uh front court, whether that’s Zack Edy developing into the 2020 machine that we saw later down the line or, you know, Jiren Jackson Jr. becoming that allstar level player that can score at any point anywhere on the court and still be able to hold on to the ball in the case of a double team. And obviously, you know, John Moran, we’ve talked about him, we talked about Jaylen Wells, we’ve talked about a lot of guys, but really just the team finding their groove in the right time and being able to be consistent with it throughout the entirety of the league, entirety of the season. I think we’re talking we’re talking a really, really, really good chance to for the Grizzlies to make some noise and be a dark horse kind of team. Because when I look at the division that they’re in, I’m just being honest. With the division that they’re in, I truly do think they are the best team. Because here’s how I look at it. The San Antonio Spurs, they have a very good team, but I don’t think they’re there yet. They could surprise us all, but I don’t think they’re yet. I don’t think they are there yet because new coach, younger, still got a bunch of young players, very good roster that could pan out within the next three years, but still a lot that they have to figure out before they can really just decide before we really just look at them as serious threats. The Mavericks, um, not really too much I can say about them. Obviously, you have Anthony Davis and Cooper Flag that really needs to be worried about. uh you they won’t get Kyrie Irving maybe until like later in the year if he does play at all. So that’s something um I don’t really look at the Mavericks as a key key threat. Uh Pelicans, they’ve actually playing out a pretty good roster, but one thing about the Pelicans, they have to stay healthy and it’s more than just the entire team. Their stars have to stay healthy, similar to the Grizzlies. But when guys like Zion aren’t available, then you got De Jonte Murray recovering from an Achilles injury. You really have to keep those in mind. But with key acquisitions like Jordan Pool, I think they um they do have a very good roster that could pan out well. It’s really just staying healthy. So I have the Pelicans in the radar of teams that are dangerous. And obviously the main threat being the Houston Rockets, the team that did win the division last year, uh adding Kevin Durant, getting rid of Jaylen Green, and then just, you know, rounding out the team. Um that’ll be interesting. It’ll be interesting to see. Um, Grizzies, oddly enough, the Grizzlies do have a good track record again against Kevin Durant, but um, only only one can tell that that’s actually going to keep keep um, keep happening. You know, the Grizzlies did pretty good against Kevin Durant last year. I believe winning I believe sweeping the the Suns if I’m not mistaken. I could be um could be mistaken. I’m not sure. But um yeah, the Rockets and the Pelicans to me are the main threats. Obviously, when it comes to Western Conference, you got your OKC’s, you got your Minnesota Timberwolves, you got your Lakers, you got all those teams. Only time will tell with with that. I’m more so worried about the division because the division the Southwest division is going to be in in two, three years, the Southwest division is going to be one of the better divisions in the entire Western Conference in really in the entire league. So, that’s just something that the Grizzlies, they really need to figure out how to play in that division and still find a way to stay healthy, stay consistent, and be a championship level threat because a lot of people in the media aren’t looking at the Grizzlies as a med as a championship level threat and for right rightfully so. But think the Grizzlies are darkhorse team when healthy. So, I got good hopes for the season, right? Like I said, next up for the Grizzlies training camp, preseason, and then the regular season. Uh but as for this edition of Grizz Daily, that’s a wrap. That’s really all I got. Uh like I said, it’s really really a dry point in the offseason. So it’s really just looking ahead towards the next season. Um which is it going forward. They have one more game, constellation game. Also Flemming doesn’t have the foot speed to stand in front of anybody. He didn’t have a great game. He was just OK please stop trying to hype him up.
The southwestern is already stacked. Go Grizzlies!

I like small too definitely mayshack, but the none guys not on roster looked good enough to keep , especially bigs that's what hurt us most definitely, don't know why they couldn't have found better guys to try out , , as much as we need a big ,I would expect better bigs trying out in summer league but it's only summer league
