Grading the Last 5 Magic 1st Round Picks #nba #nbadraft #magic

Let’s grade the US five Orlando Magic first round picks excluding Jason Richardson from the 2025 draft. So we’ll go to Tristan Dilva who was the 18th overall pick in the 2024 draft. I’m going to give this pick a B minus. The Silva could do a little bit of everything but isn’t elite at one specific skill. I wonder how much he’s going to be involved next year in the Magic’s rotation for a team that’s trying to win a title. I might be too generous here. They had the sixth overall pick during the 2023 draft. They selected Anthony Black out of Arkansas. I’m going to give this a B minus. Black is a great athlete. He’s got good court vision for his size, but he hasn’t really taken that leap yet. something we thought could happen in year number two. It’s going to be a big year three for him now. But they also had the 11th overall pick in the 2023 draft. This pick they got from the Nicole Vuchich trade, the last asset from it. They selected Jet Howard, the shooting guard out of Michigan. I didn’t love this pick at the time. Thought it was a little bit of a reach. I have to give this a D. Howard, like Black, did not take advantage of his opportunities last year. And with more talent going to Orlando, it does feel like Howard may be out of the rotation completely in 2026. So, they had the first overall pick on the night of the 2022 draft. They selected Pyro. I have to give this an A+. makes it even more impressive. There was talks that they could take Chad Homegrren at one or Jabar Smith Jr. In my opinion, they definitely made the right decision. So, we’re going to create two more picks, so six total cuz we have two selections in the top 10 from the 2021 draft. First one was Jaylen Suggs, number five overall. And I’m going to give this an A minus, though. Suggs was definitely one of the top prospects going into this draft. Took him a little bit of time to break out, but it’s definitely worth the extension Orlando paid him because of his defensive upside. And then they also had the eighth overall pick. They selected Fron Vagner out of Michigan, giving this an A+ as well. They’ve really built this Orlando Magic team through the draft, which is very impressive.

  1. Magic are a pretty good drafting team overall. Even their bad picks aren't TOTAL busts and they have some amazing picks that panned out.

  2. B- is way too high for Anthony black. His athleticism is okay, a good passer, but he needs to develop more of an offensive game. C+ for me

  3. Black played great. He was a great passer and a very good defender. His shooting has improved steadily. He hasn’t had some monster leap in ability but he’s consistently getting better
