The 2025 NBA summer league matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and the Memphis Grizzlies gave fans a first real look at Asa Newell in Hawks colors. And the rookie didn’t disappoint. Born in Atlanta and now representing his hometown team, Newell stepped onto the court with confidence, energy, and purpose. In 24 minutes of action, he finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Stuffing the stat sheet and giving the Hawks plenty to be excited about. Newell showed flashes of the versatility that made him the 23rd overall pick in this year’s draft. At 6’9 with length and mobility, he impacted both ends of the floor. Offensively, he was efficient around the rim going 6412 from the field. Though he struggled from the free throw line, hitting just two of six, his activity on the glass and defensive presence more than made up for it. His two blocks and two steals highlight the potential he has as a switchable defender and rim protector. After one impressive season at Georgia where he averaged 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds, Newell entered the draft with momentum and it’s clear he’s not afraid of the NBA stage. Yes, he had three turnovers and missed both of his three-point attempts, but that’s expected as he adjusts to the speed and spacing of the pro game. What matters is the upside and Asa Newell showed plenty of it in this early glimpse. The Hawks may have found a real gem late in the first round. [Music]
