DETROIT PISTONS VS MIAMI HEAT 🏀 NBA SUMMER LEAGUE 2025

I really like Dennis Jenkins and his ability to get inside the paint and create for others. Look for him to push the tempo a lot more knowing that key guys are out the lineup. Garcia flicks the wrist on a three and Dawson Garcia third game in Vegas gets the scoring started. movement from both teams. It’s not going to be a lot of standing by one guy. Everybody’s going to have a chance to touch the ball as Smith gets there for a foul. But you just seen great basketball being played in in the early minutes of this game. Panipenko is the summer league head coach for the Pistons. Join JB staff last summer. They led seasons in the NBA. Four different teams and his center to Smith fouled. A former first team all SEC performer at the line. On the flip side, Eric Glass has been a part of organization for a long time. He’s coached in a number of summer leagues and it’s part of the consistency that is the Heat organization. Smith hits the second body. He’s pinballing on the floor on a make free throw. Yeah, they’re going they’re going to get after it. Yakatronis trying to scoop it. Danger. Second chance. Tries to muscle it up and does draw the contact. It’s that second effort that you love big guys to contribute on the rebound right here. Doesn’t give up. Gets right back up there and comes back right back at again to to get the foul. A lot of these players are not going to be the main contributors on their team coming into training camp. So, you have to find ways to make an impact on the game. And so far, you’re seeing that from Danger, especially as a player undrafted out of Memphis, played a couple of years at Illinois. In fact, when he was a member of the Ali, he had 20 consecutive field goals made in the NCAA tournament, which was a school record, and that’s the kind of player he is. Flash to the rim, set him up with lobs. Unbelievable. Create a foul for himself. Well, you mentioned you like what you’ve seen so far from Jenkins in summer league. Yes, he’s been playing phenomenal, especially in his last three games, averaging over 17 points, but what I like about him is his tempo, his ability to get inside the paint, create for others. As a guard at his size, you have to be able to playmake at a high level, and he’s doing that thus far with his speed. First one goes. You brought up his ability to get to the basket, but in Vegas, he’s shooting it well. Over 50% from three. Four different schools in his college career. And the last one, St. John’s for his final year, 23-24 campaign. Yeah. I mean, you look at Pistons, some of their key players left that were playing heavy minutes in the playoffs. And Dennis Schroeder, we all know the impact he’s had in the playoffs, but you look at Jenkins, he can give you that same ability as you see right there on the pressure defensively. Maybe not contribute the same way as a Schroer and he’ll get there, but he he’s doing just that he’s pushing the tempo. He’s picking up full. He’s doing everything he can to make a lasting impression on summer league before training camp. And you brought up what the addition of Shruder was in the middle of the season for the Pistons and part of the leap that they made, one of the best turnarounds in NBA history, season over season. And now the next step for coach Baker staff’s team is trying to figure out, okay, how do you Ow! comfortable with the ball in his hands. We saw it at Illinois from Lithuania. And we’ll head to the free throw line. I like the behind the back pass. Sometimes you need plays like that to, you know, get you out of everybody being so stiff and serious. I mean, you got to play a lot loose. You know, you can’t always look at the game as so structured and, you know, tense. You know, you got to have fun playing this game, especially when it’s the full court. I mean that is the mantra. That is the staple of what defense is all about in the NBA today. Dawson Garcia count it. Pistons hot from three in the early going. a whistle and a look at the clock to make sure that everything is okay with the shot clock. But Detroit out of the gate already three main threes. Yeah, and we know Darson Garcia is a capable scorer. We’ve seen that, you know, his his college days. But look at the playmaking ability of Jenkins getting inside the paint, drawing two to the basketball, creating out to the weak side help for a nice easy for Darson Garcia. So that wide base that he had, you see a lot of players if they have that wide base, they kind of condense it before they shot. He had the wide platform and was still able to go straight up with it. Yeah, shooters, when you’re up when you’re in this league, that corner three-pointer is going to be your friend. And it’s about how you getting to your shot. Like you said, you got to have the right balance when that ball comes to you because the timing of the shot has to be very nice, easy, and smooth. And your balance has to be just as good. Garcia, who just hit the three, and Sedanis Jenkins, who’s been having a stellar summer for the Pistons, showing off the handle. Smith from the elbow, backs down Golden, getting to the basket, and he will head back to the free throw line. First game of the day from the pavilion in Vegas with Detroit leading by 10. His next step will be um career best as a leader, as a captain. That’s the responsibility you shoulder uh as a face of the franchise and as the team captain. There’s a big legacy to both of those. It’s not about that final statistical number. It’s about impacting winning and moving other people and helping them get to a higher level. And I think he’s ready. That’s what’s exciting for a head coach to be able to observe. Me and SP talk all the time. Uh it’s it’s kind of funny now how we’ve grown. We knew we wanted to bring something something different, more life, try to figure out how we can get over this mountaintop. It was more so me being a vocal leader. That’s how I’m getting the needle to move. You know, I have somebody in my life who gives me great advice every once in a while. And they were like, if you see when you’re in the huddle, if you see two to three people’s head nod while you’re talking, that means you’re gonna it’s going to start to become a domino effect when you talk. I’m in that role now. And you know, when I speak now, you see all eyes locked in. [Music] Welcome back to NBA Summer League. The Pistons up on the Heat by 15. And the Pistons without Ron Holland, their fifth pick from the 2024 draft. Ron Holland not playing, but he’s had a terrific summer league. He’s shown improvement in multiple areas in his shooting and his overall offensive game. He’s really tightened it up since the NBA season last season. Head coach JB Pickerstaff said it was his defense though and leadership he wanted to see here at Summer League and he has to be a two-way player. In Tuesday’s loss, Han led the team with 22 points. He had six steals though and six rebounds. That’s really what got everyone’s attention. And plus, the team told me they’re very happy with him shooting 46.7% from three overall and his tenacity on defense. Indeed, man. And it was only around 24% from distance last season playing in 81 games. Heat first round draft pickonis at the line. But Darren, what did you see in the work in summer league from Holland? Well, I think Giannis said it best. I mean, his ability to shoot the basketball is what a lot of his staff, his coaching staff is going to be looking for, right? Is he going to be a two-way player? Is he going to pick up full court? Is he going to have the intensity defensively? And he’s done all of that and checked all the boxes in these last few summer league games. And you can’t be more impressed of his improvement so far since his uh rookie year. Pistons trying to attack that Miami zone and they get the loose ball and Smith floats it home. Mention with the Pistons despite their great season a year ago, they had some roster turnover. You mentioned Shruder as this floater is off the backboard front of the rim settles out of bounds. Then with Malik Beasley and this situation, they bring in former Miami Heat Duncan Robinson, but there’s still some space for Holland to carve out a larger role. Absolutely. I mean, if he plays at that 10 level that he’s shown us thus far, I think he’s going to be more than fine. You talked about him playing 81 games. The best stat you can possibly have is being available for your team. So now he has the experience and all he has to go out there and just show what he’s able he’s capable of and he’s doing that right now. Off moved and that three goes Miller Cop GLeague last year shot 42% from three. Detroit four of five from the three-point line. It’s because of the ball movement that they’re doing right that not one guy is holding the basketball. Everybody is sharing the basketball. Everybody’s touching the basketball and they’re getting great looks. You know, when you share the basketball at a high level, everybody starts to feel good, Chris. You know, it’s not stuck on one guy’s hand and not by everybody’s not touching the basketball right here. They’re all benefiting off of that. Stellar shooting is contagious. Umar Balo fouled and he’ll head to the line. Keat doing a solid job of getting to the line so far where they’re five of six. Just one of eight from the floor in the early going. And they hit their first. This is a great opportunity for players on either team to step up and leave a lasting impression before training camp. Training camp is around the corner, right? And some of these guys didn’t have the opportunity because of the main guys were playing a lot of minutes. But now these guys can show the coaches what they’re capable of. And right now you got to showcase your talent. You got to showcase what you’re able to do and just leave that lasting impression so a coach can be like, you know what that we need that guy. We need that guy to come in to make the impact that he was doing in summer league and they have that opportunity. I could just hear the NBA players that are watching this broadcast saying training camp is right around the corner. They don’t want to hear that. They don’t want to hear that yet. My summer to go. Oh man. That’s why I’m glad I’m sitting on this side, right? I don’t have to worry about training camp no more. But right there, that last play, Chris, look at Jenkins. I mean, he’s getting inside the paint. He’s creating for his teammates and he’s the recipient wider. They’re up 22 to9 right now as he makes a great outlap pass. And the nephew of coach JB Baker staff TJ running the floor and got it to the glass first. Goend right here. Just a great drive and great bounce pass. I mean, unbelievable play by Jenkins and right now he’s picking up full court. I mean, this is this is beautiful. This is what you want to see from your point guard. Was a stellar start for the Pistons. Summer League game number four. Little too aggressive defensively and Dennis Jenkins pleads his case. How is it like having your nephew on the team? Chris, can can you relate a little? I mean, no, absolutely not. And it’s just the what what you’re seeing a lot in the NBA most recently in the second round or the second overall pick in this draft. Dylan Harper is second generation NBA players and just such an advantage to have a relative a close relative who has league experience. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or it’s just that we’re just getting old. You need to tell me right now. It’s a lot of both actually. seen players that we looked up to. Now you see their nephews and their sons having an impact in the game is such a great feeling to see. Caught from the corner, five of six from three. Piston sizzling and a timeout Miami. Miller cop two for two. You got to know where the cop is. [Music] Set the tone, DJ. Set the tone, DK. Set the tone. Set the tone. Your chance. Yeah, your chance. Hey, I’mma clean that up down there. Pass. DJ, get out. Lay in. Lay corner. Get corner. Get corner. Watch that screen by yourself. Z by yourself. Watch the flip. Detail. Detail on three. 1 2 3. And one. And one. Yeah. DJ. Yeah, DJ. Hey, DJ. Yeah, bro. Here we go. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. We got places to be in Vegas. Hey shorty last night. I want a pretty one. I want Pistons have come out of the gate. Lights out. Miller Cop has hit a couple of those five made threes for the Pistons. Stephanie did a great job of moving without the basketball and his teammates are finding him in the right places to get a couple of his threes. part a good reason why they’re up 27 and nine has a lot to do with his shooting. This is a fun matchup. I love when we get these in summer league. You have somebody who was a great defender in college, Zakai Ziegler who’s defending Casper Yakatonis who was the first round draft pick, 20th overall and when he thought a lottery type talent that’ll be locking horns likely the remainder of this first quarter. slipping to cut the balance and the jumper goes from Myron Gardner. As planned, right? I think he meant to do that, right? Try to put on those brakes quickly and get the squeak of the shoes. This court has seen a lot of bouncing of the ball over the past eight days. God, who’s hit two threes, puts it on the deck. Didn’t have a plan off the fingertips of Javvante Cook right there out of the timeout. They try to give Cop a a great pin down out of the timeout set, but that’s what they’re going to see a lot for Duncan Robinson, right? He’s going to be a guy that’s going to be filling that role where they’re going to be able to run a lot of out of timeout plays to get him a good open shot from the three. Oh, tried to turn it over, but just found the rim instead. Boy, is he bouncy. [Music] Late contests worked out for TJ Bicker staff to alter that. Now TJ has it on this end. Tennessee product Ziggler steps into a three and finally the Pistons miss one from distance. But they’re still generating great shots. A lot of their shots are coming from a lot of high post action, split actions. They’re getting a lot of body movement, ball movement. And even though he didn’t convert on that shot, I mean, it’s still a great look for him. Garter has it poked away. Defensive effort from Garrison Brooks. Whistle in the back courts. 27-11. And Miami just two for 12 shooting in this first quarter. Missed all four threes. They’ve also turned it over four times. Well, it’s the difference between Detroit and Miami right now. It’s just the ball movement right now as you see more than one or two passes even though he stepped out. I mean, Miami needs a guard that can just get into the paint and create for others. And right now, they’re just not getting that type of movement. interview. See, coach Pipenko has been an assistant with the Pacers, Cavs, Grizzlies, and running the Pistons summer league. Miami, a team that you’ve highlighted a couple of times, known for their ball movement, haven’t had much of it so far in this first half. Although, Yakaton sets up Balo and he’ll head to the line. Yeah, the the ball movement is Miami’s offense, right? I mean, you think about what Bavao has done for this team. And Tyler Herro, like they don’t play on the ball a lot, right? They a lot of their stuff or their success has come from playing without the basketball and be able to create for others. And that’s what you’re you’re wanting to see right now in the summer league. And these guys on the team, you know, they have to be able to play be a star in their own role cuz none of these guys are going to have the ball in their hands heavy. They got to be able to play without the basketball. Summer league action continues tonight. NBA TV, ESPN, the ESPN app. Coming up next, NBA TV, Atlanta and Memphis, ESPN tonight, Spurs, Hornets, and then Celtics Lakers. I don’t care whether it’s summer league or the NBA finals. You mentioned Celtics Lakers. Yes, it’s always going to be a rivalry. Hot start Detroit here. Game one from the pavilion. Across the way is the Thomas and Mack. Hoops fans have traveled all across the country, all across the world to gather here in Vegas and then go across the concourse to watch basketball all day long. Follow inside. Vortex Dakashon for Stevenson. Boom from behind and out of bounds. Well done on the trail. T D T D T D T D T D T D T D T D T D T DJ Madlock. That’s a great effort by Madlock not to give up on the play. You know, he tries to, you know, stop Yakunis and then goes back and gets a block shot. Great effort. I might have also been off of the heat as that went out of bounds. The officials didn’t catch it. Both teams in a penalty. Final minute, first quarter. Cook with his GPS, navigates to the rim and one. Just the third field goal of the quarter for the Heat. I love that move by Cook. You know, takes his time, surveys a little bit, uses his body, gets contact, and finishes for the and one. Great move. Anytime a team is in a penalty situation, you know, your thought process should be how can I get to the line by being aggressive going to the basket. You don’t want to settle for a jump shot. You want to get fouled. And that’s what Cook did on that last play. Javvante Cook last year summer league for the Timberwolves and this year for the Heat. Cup sets the corner. Manlock whips for Brooks. Picked up by Gardner. Shot clock at five. Ziegler steps into a long ball. The rainbow has a lot of gold on the other end. [Music] Distance doubling the heat. That one rolls off the rim. Cop tries to pick it up on the baseline. It’s a foul on Miami and Zakai Ziegler. off the bounce. It’s a great defensive possession by Miami to create a shot clock situation, but better bailout three by Ziggler to shoot the three over the top. And nice little three was 32% from distance last year in Tennessee. Ziegler just one of the top defensive players in college basketball, SEC defensive player of the year the last two years. And you can see that impact he’s having on the game defensively. I mean, he’s another one of those point guards that you’re looking for to pick up full court and trying to create havoc to kind of disrupt Miami Heat’s offense early on. Cop two threes in the first quarter and missed two free throws. Shot clock unplugged. We’ve seen Yakonis get a lot of on ball reps in this first quarter. up and down summer league so far for Yakatonis whether it’s in California or here in Vegas. Yeah, Yakatun is right there. Had has a size advantage, you know, right there. You would like to see him to kind of shoot over the top of Ziggler, but you know, just wasn’t able to make the right read as Ziggler rushes down for Oh, it goes. It does. He got it off his fingertips in time. He doesn’t think so. Courtside, it looked like he did. And that is a fitting cap on a stellar first 10 minutes for Detroit. Everything is going right even for Ziggler for a nice little right right layup off the glass. Good bucket. Good quarter for Detroit. [Music] Oh, nice. Okay, hold it. Hold it. Get the ball. Pass it. Turn it off. Today we at the University of Ptoria. We’re doing a a junior NBA basketball clinic and what we’re doing is we’re just imparting some skills on dribbling, passing, shooting, and all the fundamentals of basketball. Uh what we like to see in junior NBA is lots of smiles, lots of fun. You know, that’s when the kids learn more. If you make the experience enjoyable, the kids pay more attention. They’re more engaged. We learned a lot from the coaches. We got a lot of insight. Good to see people take interest in it. And it’s a good sign to see. You’re not getting anywhere. They’re getting you off by giving good cautions. We’re going to move like this. There’s a lot of energy. It’s beautiful, man. It brings a lot of hope to us young African kids that, you know, one day we could play at that level. It brings a lot of hope. 4. Amazing guys. That’s why you make it look great. We have a lot of young talent and we’d like to thank you NBA Africa so much for coming here and just, you know, improving our basketball. 56. [Applause] Back to summer league. Dennis Jenkins with me. You guys are leading the heat 32 to 15, but you specifically five assists. How are you seeing the court? How are you finding guys so early in this game? Um, I mean, you know, they defense trying to be real aggressive in the passing lane, so I’m just being aggressive and just making the play that’s in front of me. Just making the simple plays, adding to your guys is over 70% from the three-point line. Team really moving. You two-way player. What is your team told you got to do to make it full time for the Pistons? Uh, it’s mainly just uh defending mostly. Just defend. Um, be aggressive when it’s my shot. Take my shot. Uh, other than that, just set my guys up for real. That’s it. All right. Thanks. I’ll let you get back there. Back to you. When you see a team hit six threes in a quarter, you know somebody had to be setting them up. And Jenkins was that player for the Pistons. My Gardner, by the way, impressive bucket and he completes the three-point play. Yes, I think you said it right by Jenkins. I mean, five assists early on. And what I love what he said was, you know, they’re they’re being aggressive on him on the pick and roll, so he’s able to create for his teammates and not looking just for his own shot. Flintman well timed steps the dill which you see a lot of players utilizing that crafty footwork when they get in close. Yeah, these euros Chris are different. He’s right. They’re not doing the basic euro that we’re accustomed to grew up on, but they’re they’re different. Wipe that one off. A push to the back and a foul is on Vislav Golden. Another key point that Jenkins mentioned was, you know, they asked or GA asked them, you know, what does bigger staff want to see from him? And he said defense. You know, a lot of times as young guards, you you got so many things on your mind. You’re trying to make an impression, but the best thing is just to keep it simple. As Garson makes a nice move to his left, but as a young guard in this league, you just want to keep everything simple and simplify your game. And just that’s where you want to create your niche, right? Is it just you want to focus on shooting? You just want to focus on defense, but not giving yourself too much can make it difficult for yourself to make an impact. You look at guard defense. Ziggler comes to mind. He’s guilty of the foul there. But it seems like at this point and you’re you’re a guard who had to battle against players who were bigger than you is. I don’t know if I’d want to use the word on your size or not, but uh at this point in the NBA, they will hunt you out if you have the reputation of a guy who won’t defend. And especially if you’re not one of the top offensive players, you know, the Hardens, the Lucas, where you’re the offensive system, if you’re going to be on the court, you have to be able to defend, right? If you’re not giving that effort, but if you’re giving that effort, you’re picking up full, you’re being feisty on the defensive end, you’re being physical, they’re going to stop picking on you, right? They pick on players, not just the undersized players, but guys, they know that defensively they’re not just giving it their effort. But Ziggler is not one of them. He’s the one that’s fighting through every screen and trying to get his full effort. And that’s the type of players that you’re looking for. Dashon’s first field goal of the game, six points aboard, and one assist. [Music] I really like Yakuchunis’s ability to get inside the paint at his size and he’s made a lot of great plays even right here just you know just being patient using his size body finishing with the left. It’s a nice little move by Yakatunis. 19 years old he broke the Illinois freshman record for total points. [Music] Clock up lane which leaves open Madlock from the corner. Bullseye. [Music] TJ Matlock. Another Pistons three. They made seven. Yeah, it’s a really an unselfish play by Big Fella to be able to see him see his his shooter in the corner. I mean, a lot of times when bigs get the ball in the paint, they they’re thinking about themselves right there. But on this play right here, I mean, they’re used to just going up, right, as a big, but you know, to hit that madlock in the corner, it’s a very unselfish play and it does a lot for the morale of the team. The morale of a team, seven of 10 from three-point range. I’m sure you’re feeling good about yourselves as a squad when the shots are going in at that rate. This time Madlock stepped on the sideline right in front of that deep bench. Turnover number four for the Pistons. That’s an like that last pass by Brooks. I mean, you talk about different ways for a big to impact the game offensively is not just scoring, but are you able to set the pick? Are you able to roll, draw the defense in and kick out to your shooters is what a lot of these teams and coaches want to see from their bigs [Music] turnover there. The the bigs these days, the amount of skill that you have to have to be effective at that position. You see it for Ziggler to go one-on-one right here. as Yakatonis McCaspers holds up defensively, locks it out of bounds. Four to shoot. A great contain by Yakunis to stay in front of a smaller guard. And it’s that second effort. You know, a lot of times, you know, a great offensive player is going to beat you, right? But are you able to stay in front of the play? Are you able to give that second effort to get back into the play to make a block shot like Yakunas did? And it’s a great defensive effort. Finally takes a seat. He’s already played 11 minutes team high. One of four from the floor right off the inbounds. Detroit scores with TJ. Make that Garrison Brooks. That was Baker Staff who got that one to go. [Music] Live up top. Second gather and finally Golden flushes it down. Nice little driving kick by Williams. Seeing big fella for the lob, but better patience by big fella to just take it up and get it easy too. Whipman bullies inside the lane and draws the foul and back to the free throw line. Whenever you’re driving on the angles, a couple things to note as a guard, you you can either look for that big for that easy lob or the weak side corner, but right here it was just an easy play. And big fella, nice easy two. I’m sure that will get him going. And that’s the type of plays that he needs to continue to make an impact for his team. in a summer league setting, how valuable is it to just have those point guards who have the mindset of facilitating to help put the players in the proper position to really even evaluate the rest of the guys on the floor. It’s essential, right? You know, you don’t always want to play with a guard that just loves to score. You want to play with a guard that can do a little bit of both, right? Yes, as a guard, you want to be able to score and put pressure on the defense, but are you able to get everybody involved? When you get your guys involved, they’re going to play a lot harder for you. They’re going to be able to do all the little things because they feel like they’re involved into the game. Contested rebound. Vicker staff deflected away. It’ll actually stay here. Nice touch by Detroit. [Music] We talked about the skill of players with bigger size and I think you know Kate Cunningham is one of the guys that stands out. the skill level that he has and the gear that he had all NBA season a year ago. Reason why the Pistons elevated their level of play to one of the best turnarounds in league history. Had an unbelievable season, as you mentioned, the impact he’s had with his teammates. Guys love playing with him. I mean, he’s he’s done such a great job thus far of really taking this team to the next level. And that’s not always easy for a young guard like him, you know. He’s definitely taken on that responsibility. And a player who had an uplose look at that growth was Ron Holland. Who will join us next coming up from Vegas. [Music] Been some kind of start to season number six for Tyler here. This guy has taken it to another level and then another level beyond that. On the move. rises up to the game over it. Hero, it’s good. Hero breaks through and scores. Unbelievable finish. Changed his mind in mid. Yeah, his consistency with his three-point shooting has been just awesome to start this season. Oh, pull back madness from Tyler Hero. Tyler for three. Got it. Tyler again. Again and again. When you’re playing at an all-star level, you’re not gonna shoot the ball great of a night, but I will say you are drawing defense every night. Tyler, nice delivery to the end. John, you talk about a guy making winning plays. Got Jimmy Butler on a bust out. Butler’s got a two-headed block. Hero for on the top. John, you talk about a guy making winning plays. He’s doing in all kinds of ways. It up for another play. What else is new? He may not ever miss her with a scoop and a score. Excellent attack by Tyler. He’s having such a great year as he gave career highs across the board. [Music] [Music] Back at the pavilion here in Las Vegas and Ron Holland. So far a phenomenal summer league and he’s with us here at the table. Chris Lewis, Darren Collison, and now Ron Holland. He’s taking a look at your own highlights of what you’ve been able to do. Nearly 22 points of contest in a couple of games. Thanks so much for joining. And what’s the run been like for you so far? Uh it’s been amazing. Um I had a big summer been in the gym with Freddy V and JJ a lot. Um doing a lot of film watching on K game K pace and being able to just take everything that I’ve learned this summer and be able to showcase it in this summer league. I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job and the the team that we brought down here, I think we all been sticking together. Um, been playing really well. I think we uh stepped out on the floor and been able to dominate every single day. Yeah. You know, my question to you is, you know, the the best skill to me as a player is being available, right? You played 81 games. Talk about the rigors of your first year going I know it was a little ups and downs in terms of the mental physical fatigue, but to play 81 games and get a little bit of action during the playoffs, right? Talk to me a little bit about that. Um, a lot of it was, uh, Tobias and K, really all of the vets just telling me how to navigate throughout my rookie year. Um, and I did a lot of listening when it came to that, just taking care of my body and everything. Then on the basketball side, really just doing going into the gym and not really wasting any time. Whether I’m in there 30 minutes or an hour and 30 minutes, I’m going in there doing what I need to get done and getting out of there and getting as much rest as I can. So, I feel like that’s how that had a big part to do with why I was available all year. How different is it going through this setting for the second time as you now one of the more experienced guys and I’m sure you have people now looking to you. Yes, sir. Expectations. It’s been uh it’s definitely different. Um but I definitely feel like I I got the lead leadership qualities for for it. Um being able to give back to all the knowledge and everything that I learned from this past year to these guys and we just going out here and just hooping. Um I mean at the end of the day it’s just basketball, but being able to have a year under my belt coming into my second summer league, I feel like it definitely shows. coming into your second year, where do you want to impact the most on this team? You know, when I look at you as a player, you you look like one of the best young two-way players already, right? And that that says a lot about you, but where do you see yourself impacting your team? Um, definitely coming into the game and just uh if we need that spark, being that spark, and if we got that spark already, being able to continue that spark. Um, I definitely want to come in with a defensive mindset and then being able to knock down shots when it’s my turn to knock down shots. But my mentality going into the game is just do whatever the team needs at this exact moment every single night and being available. That’s not out of bounds. We’ll throw back the other way. Is Bigger Staff easy coach to play for? I think he is, but it I don’t know if y’all see because you play defense. He He’s competitive though. Y’all see him on the sideline at times. Um I mean, you can just see it. Uh it it definitely shows being able to being able to just go out there and compete and have a coach that’s just as competitive as you are. Um, it definitely helps out there. It’s definitely being that I think it’s definitely easy playing for yourself. So, it almost seems to like every game last year, you guys felt like you guys were the underdog, right? And you guys gained a lot of respect around the league and rightfully so coming into this year, do you feel like it’s going to still be that or do you feel like you gained the respect now? It’s about, you know, everybody kind of knows what you guys are going to bring to the table. We got to be up for Detroit every time we play them. Um, I think it’s that every single night. Um, you’ve been seeing it all over social media. Detroit versus everybody. That’s one thing we uh hang our hats on, being able to just go in go in there every single night and being able to just go out there and compete. Um I think uh being able to just have that went up top to try and was bet at the summit by Golden. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. Every single night we go out there with the mindset of we’re trying to dominate. So, um that’s one thing that we definitely hang our hats on and we know what people going to expect from us every single night. So, look at that last sequence here. Come on, Lou. Finish that. I like to see, man. Let’s Let’s get to it, man. You know what I’m saying? Finish that. He’s not trying to lay up over here. We’re trying to bang on people. Y’all see it. Now, we’re joined by Ron Holland here at the table. They call a timeout. We’ll step aside and continue our conversation with the Piston secondyear player. Coming up next, Allstar Weekend is here. We’re going to put the bay on full display for the world to see. And today is a great start to the entire weekend. There’s a lot of history and tradition and legacy here in Oakland. And so this city was good to us and got us to the point where where we are now. And we just want to we just want to give back and do the same thing. Feel me? And then we come to stuff like this and it just changes their whole life. We motivated like that. You know what I’m saying? really a dream come true to be able to celebrate Allstar weekend here in East Oakland and everything is uh about being a village for these kids and the next generation and hopefully achieve their full potential. You know, it takes you back on how you would feel if you were in their shoes and anytime you have the opportunity to impact someone else’s life, it does far more for you impacting your own life. For me, Allstar Weekend is about things like this and just another opportunity for me to, you know, help um the staff that’s here that’s already preparing to help those families. It’s in my heart to give back. It feels like I’m doing my job. It’s the part about our sport that I love the most is that the impact that we can have off the court. The community does so much to support us, our athletes, and anything that we can do to give back and turn around that support and uplift our communities. It means the world to me. A challenge from Miami. They called this on the floor an offensive foul. Eric Glass, the summer league head coach, wanted to take a look at this one for review. So, we’re at the table joined by Pist and secondyear player Ron Holland, as well as Darren Collison. I’m Chris Lewis. What do you guys see there? That looks like a charge to me. The defensive player establishes legal guarding position prior to the upward shooting motion of the offensive player. Therefore, the call on the floor and offensive foul is confirmed. Miami’s challenge is unsuccessful, so they will lose their timeout and their ability to challenge for the remainder of the game. What you need to know, Chris, man, you guys had this. I wasn’t sure you were blinded by the Pistons loyalty here, but no, you guys were right on it. Now, Ron, you talked about the uh, you know, mentality, Detroit versus everyone. Just from the outside looking in, it just seemed like the home games, especially in the playoffs, there was something special going on there, the city and their support. Um, just I mean, me being there, uh, I didn’t I didn’t really play a lot like I didn’t play a lot like that, but me being there and just being able to get that experience, it was just that crowd was just amazing. the fan base, everybody the amount of love that Detroit has for his sports um when it come to anything like it was it was just crazy being able to just see that. Um but you just you could tell like it was just a different kind of it was different kind of vibe in there. You know what I’m saying? Like it was I mean you you who wouldn’t want to play in front of a crowd like that, you know what I’m saying? So it was just nice night nice like that. We was just hanging our heads on that and being able to turn our crowd up was just a blessing. We were just talking about K Cunningham’s impact on the game and he’s had an unbelievable year as a young player. What are some of the things that you took away from him and his game and how he responded, you know, and got better every single game and took brought the team on his shoulders? Like what what have you learned from that? Uh, one thing that I’ve definitely learned was he doesn’t let anybody uh speed him up or slow him down. He stays at his pace all game. Um, I’ll be on the bench joking about it, but when I say like it looked like he at a playground out there, like he just out there playing his game. He, like I said, he ain’t let nobody speed him up or anything. That’s one thing that I definitely learned from him. Um, watching his film and things like that, talking to him, getting his uh, intel on what he sees on the floor and everything definitely has been helping me out. Well, Ron, it was a great run seeing you on the court in Vegas for seeing the steps in your game. Thank you so much for the time. Stay healthy, sir. Appreciate y’all. Keep balling, man. you being a two-way player and giving that effort like you’ve been doing is going to make a lot of of your coaching staff proud of you and you’ve been doing a great job of that. Yes, sir. Appreciate y’all. As Ron Holland and you mentioned it, DC best ability was his reliability of being in the lineup on a game in game basis. Got those developmental reps and you just heard him here at the table. He’s primed to take advantage of some open minutes with the roster changes with the Pistons heading into next season. Yeah, he has the right mindset of a young player, right? He doesn’t feel like he’s coming in and he’s trying to be the guy. He’s he’s trying to see where do I fit in? Where do I make the most impact? And you heard him say it’s on the defensive end. And that’s I I I believe he’s one of the best defensive players already on that team. You know, he didn’t get a lot of minutes, but you give Ron Holland a lot more opportunities. He’s going to make a lot of people proud about his defensive effort, and that’s what he’s been showing in summer league. Amongst rookies, was second in games played, sixth in field goal percentage, and you brought up the defense. He was eighth in steals. Yeah, that’s big time. You know, you think about rookies and players want to come in from college and they just want to be a scorer, right? They want to be the the Stephss of the world or the the KDs. But the reality is is you have to start somewhere, right? where are you going to make your most impact first as a rookie player and then you can start worry about those things later on but you got to be able to create a niche and Ron Holland saying look I want to be that two-way player for Detroit Pistons Texas native looking on a couple of games make it three here in Vegas team high 22 points per game meanwhile his Pistons looking strong without him in this one but Dane Danger trying to change that for the Heats man great moves it’s Always nice to see big man use real big man moves. You know, a lot of these big mans love to shoot threes, but that post up move is very refreshing to see. Great move off the baseline from Danger. Danger played for Penny Hardway at Memphis last season. Alters the shot, grabs the rebound. Stevenson wrap bounce pass. Danger takes out his bag to try to get to the baskets. trying to show you a little little bit of everything, including the bright orange shoes he has. We’ll take a look at those in a second. Right there, being patient, but if you notice when he gets the ball in the post, it’s that quick look to the middle to get the defense offset and nice little reverse using the rim on the other side. Yeah, those are the shoes I’m talking about. Hey, he played at Illinois, so guessing he likes the color orange. wasn’t teammates with Yakonis as danger left to go to Memphis in Yakonis’ only season with Illinois. [Music] Lefty released on the free throw. He’s shaking his head as he walks back after the miss. Detroit still shooting 55% from the floor and they are seven for 11 from three. Make it seven of 12. Miami has definitely picked up the intensity level now defensively and offensively and they’re getting a lot of great looks as Stevenson gets a nice little floater going inside the paint. Timeout called by the Peno for Detroit Miami within 15. [Applause] Where my family at doing? I’m doing good. How you doing, Boston? Doing great, man. That look like Jay Love doing it. OC is doce. I got the blending in. N it’s good. It’s gone now. What’s up, man? It’s a It’s a glitter party out here, man. Got no party for the kids, man. I like it, man. I like it. No problem, man. Blessed to be here, man. Yes, sir. No doubt, man. For sure, man. Man, it feel good. I ain’t cry yet. Yeah, my boy. Yeah, my boy. I’m about to cry with him. Yeah, D. [Applause] We going to put to work. [Music] What a season it was a year ago for the Pistons. Many people thought they’d be at the bottom of the East again. Instead, made it to the playoffs in a fantastic first round series against the Knicks. You can see their projected depth chart heading into this season. We’re mentioning a lot about Kate Cunningham and the leadership he’s had. I’m looking forward to seeing what Assar Thompson adds to his game and then they get Jaden Ivy back healthy, too. Yeah, I mean Chris, they they have their core guys and you know Assar Thompson I I I think he’s an unbelievable defensive player. You know, he’s a he’s a guy that’s trying to work on his jump shot, but once he gets his jump shot right, I mean, he’s going to be more than fine for this ball club. But you mentioned Jaden Ivy coming off an injury and I think he’s going to be wellversed off that injury and he’s going to make another impact, you know, for this team. But they have their core guys, so now they have the experience. This is about building with each other and they’re going to do just fine. Of course, the East coming with the injuries to Tyresese Hallebertton and Jason Tatum, the Pacers and Celtics. Many people thinking that the conference is wide open. We’ll say the Cavaliers, they were fantastic throughout the regular season. Then injury started to pile up once they got to the playoffs. And then you had the Knicks trying to follow up what they did to get their fans excited a season ago. of course a coaching change, but are the Pistons a part of that next group that could maybe challenge those top two teams if you think those teams are the top two? I believe so because they have depth. I mean, when you get further down into the season, guys get hurt, you know, guys get more fatigued, but what offsets that is the depth, your ability to play 8 to 9, 10 guys through the rotation. You know, we we’re not talking about some of the guys that they got in the offseason, which is Caris Levert, who’s a great veteran presence who can score the basketball for them and is going to do a really good job for this team. Those guys right there that come in and contribute off the bench is going to provide the depth that they need to sustain throughout the playoffs. you know, between those young teams or they have some experienced players. It’s just you’re unfamiliar with that group making deep playoff runs, but them the Magic the Hawks have made those are the teams I’m looking forward to seeing what steps, which squad emerges, who gets the homecourt advantage amongst those trio of teams. It’s going to be a straight dog fight. I know a lot of people are excited to see some of the Western Conference teams go at it, but the Eastern Conference teams, I mean, there’s about four or five teams that have a shot to really impress a lot of people down the stretch. You know, you mentioned the Hawks, they had a a great year. You know, they kind of, you know, fell short a little bit towards the end of the year, but look for Orlando with some of their key additions and Desmond Bane and Paulo’s improvement at being one of the top young players in this league. And you got Detroit Pistons. We talked about K Cuttingham. I mean, it’s a lot of great young teams that have great young players to lead them and they’re going to be more than fine and they’re going to be going after it towards the end. 11.6 to go in the first half. Danger heading back to the free throw line where he’s one of four. You mentioned Cleveland Cavaliers having a lot of success early on and the thing that hurt them was injuries, right? and they lost to a team that had probably one of the most depth teams that we’ve seen in Indiana Pacers, right? And that’s what I’m talking about. The the ability to have a team to to play nine or 10 guys is going to suit you better than it is when you’re only playing five to six guys. It became a depth league. We saw it in the playoffs. The deep teams kept advancing. Great job by Butler. JC Butler who got a hand on that one to block the shot right before halftime. Detroit stellar first 20 and they lead as we head to the break. [Music] Thank you. Here at the setting for the Summer League Film Festival. This is going to be big time. We’ve got 34 films to debut. Both current players, past players, producers, directors, they’re doing it all. We start off with a film called The Grindfather, which is Tony Allen. was a top 20 pick whether it’s scoring setting up teammates or defense. Learn a little bit about Yakatonis with Andy Catz. People in the United States may not fully grasp, but you went from Lithuania to Spain as a 15year-old. How hard was that to leave your country, family, friends as a 15year-old and go to Barcelona? Yeah. So at the beginning wasn’t easy. I didn’t even know the language they speak. I didn’t know Spanish. So first three months were harder I would say. But the only thing I had in mind was basketball. And basketball got me going. Uh and after that I didn’t really care about u outside stuff. Uh I’m really happy that I made that decision and I think it it made me grow as a basketball player and as a person. If there’s a criticism of European players, it’s defensively, you know, will they defend at the highest level? What did you learn about how to defend certainly on the perimeter in the United States that will benefit you in the NBA? I think just everyday work uh uh everyday working practices in in the weight room, especially now I’m focusing a lot in the weight room to just building strength, building uh foot speed to be able to to defend. And I think with my size, I’ll be able to uh to switch with a lot of positions, one to four, maybe in the future, one to five. I just know that I need to work on my uh strength, on my foot speed, and just put that work in. Oh, look at Yaka Jonas on the floor diving for the ball. Europeans really global players. I wouldn’t say they’ve taken over the NBA, but they’ve certainly made a massive imprint on the NBA. But why do you think that is? I think that the basketball that we play with uh IQ just uh trying to involve your teammates, make them better, make them believe in themselves and elevating the team uh to the highest highest point and caring about basketball, caring about uh winning and just trying to inspire others. I can already tell you you look stronger. I mean since the end of the season, what have you worked on the most? Definitely weight room. uh we would work weight room and then in the court we would do a lot of shooting uh ball handling and all the court stuff but my a lot of attention I was paying to to the weight room. If there’s a player in the NBA now that I could compare you to just even a little bit who would it be? Oh I think I’m kind of unique. I think there’s no like one player uh that uh I’m modeling game for, but I watch a lot of Lucas playm and shot creation. I like to watch Andrew Nehar’s defense, how he like gives all out effort and using his hands and I like Dylan Brunson two feet game. Not a bad trio of players to model your game after. Six points in the first half for Yakonis in Vegas. [Music] The way he competes, the way he sacrifices and prioritizes winning, I think that alone speaks for itself. I think he leads by example. Bam is always working, doing everything he can to play games and giving it a thousand% in night in and night out. He’s very self-aware, like he just wants to make winning plays and wants to be a guy that sets the tone. That to me is his biggest strength is just always leading by example. Every great locker room, every great team needs great leadership and sometimes you don’t volunteer for it. You’re just called to do it. You know, when you got a guy uh that you look to the right, you look to the left that’s going to war with you every night. We all feed off of him. We are glad to have have a guy like that that’s leading us. Embrace the grind. It’s not a It’s not a sprint. It’s not a sprint at all when you’re when you’re a leader because you’re trying to bring other people with you. When you think about what it’s going to take to break through, having had your opportunities twice now in the NBA finals, what what do you see when you’re gazing at that mountain top? I’m just thinking third times a charm, man. Like, get over this hump, y’all going to see a different side of me for sure. For sure. We’ve just begun to start your gallery here. 20 years from now, what other photos, what other piece of art do you want here that you’ve created for this organization, for this fan base? Man, obviously a championship. That that one would that one would be great. Uh, I mean, obviously you can go down the list, multiple allars, all defensive teams, throwing a DPO, but that that championship, that’s what brings like the I feel like that’s the that’s the one lock that has like a million keys and you just got to keep trying. Like every time you use it, I keep going to the door with a different key. And then when that key clicks, it clicks for not only me but the organization, the community. Welcome back to the NBA 2K 26 summer league. Fountains outside the Bellagio, a signature of Sin City. Las Vegas getting ready to start the third. Detroit wrong in the first 20 minutes. 5236. They lead the Heat. Although the Heat is undefeated in Vegas. I’ve learned the days that I’ve been here in July especially unrelenting already. Detroit is trying to make an impact by everybody’s picking up full. This is what I’m talking about Chris. This is where the game is at, right? It’s not just point guards picking up full. It’s it’s it’s guards, it’s forwards, it’s sometimes bigs. And what it does, it speeds the offensive team up. And right now, they’re doing that. And as you can see, they stepped out of bounds because of the pressure that they already started off with the game. I mean, everybody’s trying to earn something. Everybody’s playing for something here at summer league. And that aggressiveness highlighted for Detroit. And you’re right, their willingness to pick up full court. A daunting amount of pressure in that first half. Garcia is bumped on the perimeter. first foul of the third quarter on Miami. And it’s a great way to set the tone for the for everybody on the team. Like, look, this is how we want to start off the game. We all want to pick up full. And when you have one and two and three guys picking up full, it does a lot for the team the de the team’s morale just to be intensified and be physical on the defensive end. And that’s what you see from Detroit Pistons. And that’s why they’re up 5236. That’s a big time collision. They call the offensive foul. [Applause] Bobby Clintman brought the uh the pass while running into the defender and they get him on the offensive foul. Coach Pipenko looking on. You know, you think about Miami Heat, what makes them special is is Bam playing the five, right? You know, if you’re pressuring guards, they have a skill in Bam where they can just give him the basketball and he able to make plays for his teammates and it alleviates pressure on a lot of the guards. Oh, this is action right now. Pistons and Golden for the Heat glaring at each other getting familiar in a Vegas afternoon. Yeah, those those arms got up high and Golden didn’t didn’t like that in the least. The second week, it’s the second week of Vegas, right? Guys are getting frustrated. They’re trying to do everything they can to to make the roster and you know, you got to be tough out here. You got to be tough mentally and and both teams are responding right there with any type of physicality that is being brought to them. One more look at that sequence. Yeah, that right there. Garcia, see plays like that. That was brewing. That That’s not something that, you know, is a defensive foul. Replay is being used to see if any other hostile acts occurred on the play. Wow. Hostile act. Yeah, that was definitely brewing from Garcia. He He’d been wanting to do that for a very long time. Hostile act. I mean, that pretty hostile. Well, that was a football play, Chris. What you mean? basketball is a good is a good virtual although again to be fair Golden went in aggressively to set that screen and Garcia knew that was coming. So he became I’m telling you right now Garcia could not wait to do that since halftime. He was in the locker room thinking about that and he had the perfect opportunity to hit him in the chest. Yes, it was a hostile act. That was not a basketball play. But, you know, look, this is what competitiveness spirit is all about, right? You want guys to compete. Obviously, you want guys to compete the right way, but, you know, it’s it’s a very competitive environment right now. Guys are trying to make a roster on on both teams. So, you’re going to see some of this every now and then. Getting word that there was a technical foul in that sequence as well with Bobby Clintman for the Pistons. This was a previous possession. Yeah, right there. Just Garner and Garcia. Temperatures boiling in the Vegas heat. And then the following trip down. Yeah, it’s frustration foul. But if you’re Miami Heat, I mean, that has to get you going, right? You see one of your teammates get knocked down like that. I mean, this is where everybody has to rally around that play right there and they got to pick up their defensive level intensity and they got to get after it from here on out. Cameron Jelenus, Leanne Lanny, Joe Prince are the referees. But as I was mentioning with Bama about being a point forward, I mean the ability for him to bring the basketball up every possession to make plays, it alleviates pressure off the guards, right? And right now you’re seeing both teams pick up full, but there’s not a big that can handle the ball as well as B out of respectfully so. But you know, when if you’re a big, those are some of the the the skills that you’re going to need, right? Being able to bring the ball up and to initiate the offense much like Bam Adaba does. Yeah. Bam out of bio Kamata Sabonis big who can certainly handle and pass on Green of course the multipletime MVP Nicole Joic Yep. those those bigs are changing the game and they have for a long time because it’s easier to run the offense through them where you don’t have to run the offense through your point guards. Still getting a read on what the officials will delegate after the action we just saw. Quick recap. Detroit got out of the gate strong, setting up a lot of threes there. After review, the ruling on the floor of a common foul stands. We also have a technical foul during the dead ball on number 34. We have a flagrant foul during the dead ball on number 35 or I’m sorry on number 47, Garcia. So, we will have one shot for anybody in the game for the technical foul. Then we will have two shots for Miami number 50 for the flagrant foul. Miami will retain possession of the ball at the free throw line extended with 24 on the shot clock. A brilliant job of explaining it all. So, Clinton the technical and then you have the flagrant foul there on Garcia. Stevenson at the line to shoot the technical. And then you have Golden who has to shoot the flagrant free throws. Everybody’s being evaluated, players, officials, too. And Finn did a good job that time of not only relaying the information, but also getting the calls right. Right. I mean, everybody’s auditioning. You know, this is, you know, you want to be at your best. you know, whether you’re a coach coaching summer league or a player. Yeah, it’s a little scuff. Oh, that’s that’s nothing. That’s nothing, Chris. We we we’ve seen worse. I mean, I have to say the summer pickup runs that you guys play in NBA level guys playing in the summer. I mean, that that is nothing right there. That’s just a a greeting before you even take the court. A little scratch. That’s nothing. Play on. Another whistle away from the play. Another technical foul. Technical foul on the heat bench on the Heat bench. So, this has come to a grinding halt here to start the third quarter. A first half that had the flow to it. Still have a play 40 seconds of the third frame. Vanish Jenkins. That’s the technical foul. free throw. He has six points as well as six assists. Watch for Yakatanas to be a little bit more aggressive coming into the second half. Um I anticipate some type of pick and roll action coming from him right out the timeout as Stevenson curls around times his step. Pass deflected. Solu Smith with a steal. Litman feeds. Pistons reset [Music] shooting 54%. Jenkins rebound swatted out of bounds and it will stay with Detroit. It’s a nice shot by Jenkins. Very patient off the pick and roll. The guard goes under his screen so he had the ability to shoot the shot. Just didn’t make it. We talked a lot about the Eastern Conference through the lens of the Pistons, but very rarely do you have the Heat have two down years in a row. Jenkins wants three. Give him three. Dennis Jenkins now is nine to go along with six assists. But going back to the Heat. Yeah, Tyler Hero All-Star season. Jam Manabio, you highlighted him. I think they had the blood on the elbow of Yakonis. So, they got to make sure they get that taken care of. The officials catch it. Oh, boy. That is not the hairstyle of Tyler Herro. I thought that was Tyler Herro. I mean, how about you know that that’s not the natural hair, but just to even have the idea of I’m going to put that on as I head to the floor. We are in the city for looks like that. He’s not really enjoying that his team is down 5638, is he? He doesn’t have that look. I mean, just the the counterbalance of that look on the face with that hair is just not a match. He might he might come on this corner a little bit and he might start playing for them. Miami He doesn’t start getting their act together. Vales, how much would we have to uh pay you for you to have that as your on camera look for the next game? Well, how much you’re talking? I don’t know how much there’s a price to that. Can’t come back from that one. I’m about to say that screenshot lives forever, man. We could get that in range though if you really want to go down that direction. H I’ll pass. Chris Lewis, Derek Collison, Giana Hearn here at the pavilion. The first of the afternoon from this spot here in Vegas. Of course, action going on across the hall to Thomasson Mack. Boundary off the mark. Couple of tips on the rebound. Finally lassoed in by Dawson Garcia, who’s been involved in a couple of scuffles so far in this second half. Clintman bullies inside and will head back to the free throw line. I really like Clintman’s activity, especially going downhill. He just seems like he’s getting to the paint all game long and right there he did a great job of deling on his Euro to create the contact to put himself back at the line for two. You brought up the del a couple of times. You were a guard that was known for speed, but just having blinding speed might not be enough at this level. You have to be able to change speeds, right? I I tell my young guards at Pro’s Vision Training Camp is like, look, it it’s not about being fat all the time. You got to be able to switch your pace up. You know, Luca Don is is probably the best point guard or one of the best point guards, I should say. Him to me is one of the best point guards in our league. And they’re not always going fast. You know, they have a pace about them that they’re constantly changing speed, going fast, going slow, slow to fast, fast to slow. You got to be able to have different types of tempo when you’re navigating through the pick and roll and when you’re navigating the offense, going through the paint to create for others. Did that come naturally to you or did you have to work at it? It takes time. You know, as a young player, you just want to just go fast all the time and your mind is speeding up. But as you get older in this league and more mature, the game starts to slow down and you’re able to see what areas you’re able to go fast. And these guards right now that we’re looking at, they’re going to be able to pick up on that as Jenkins is doing that already even at his position. Be Smith. Golden holds up defensively. Shot clock at three. Another three falls. Bobby Quitman. Strong start to the third quarter. Detroit nine for 16 from three. He’s playing phenomenal. You see a little bit of everything for Cleman. He I mean he’s he’s getting into the basket or getting into the paint creating for others right there. He he’s hit a knock outside three-point shot as Jake is picking up full creating havoc. Yakun just shakes his head. All right. See, he has his hands ready. You know, a lot of times when shooters are getting ready to shoot, their hands is down and they’re not ready to shoot. But Clinton, he had his hands ready the whole entire time. So as soon as that pass is in his hands, he’s going right into his shooting pocket and right there he is the recipient of a nice three. How valuable though is this for Yakonis to get these reps against the pressure defense and right on Q blasts the three straight through. If you want to be a premier guard in this league, you got to be able to handle pressure and this is a great test like you said as Jenkins for a nice up and under scoop shot. I mean these two guards are going at it but You know, just to your point, they’re they’re putting pressure on on the teams that, you know, are putting pressure on them defensively. And Jenkins right here is getting inside the paint up and under. Scoop shot. I mean, great basket. But going back to your point, but you know, as a guard, you have to be able to handle pressure. If you don’t know how to handle pressure in this league, you’re not going to be very successful. And they’re both doing that right now. Here. Jenkins against Yakatonis. [Music] Pass over the head of Golden. Stevenson recovers, takes a step back triple. Nothing but nets. Finally, the Heat getting some rhythm in this third quarter. Garcia against Gardner with Gold in establishing position. That’s an offensive foul. Garcia. So Garcia and Golden collide again. As a big, it’s not always about blocking shots, right? It’s just about being in the right area at the right time. And right there, Golden was in the right right space at the right time and taking a charge. I mean, that’s what you want to see from anybody that’s trying to make the team, let alone at his position from the big position. Golden screens. Yakonis fires off to the right. Ahead of the pack is Jenkins. But Yakot is chasing J too much and has something to say. Oh man, he is balling right now. Lair gets his head up, throws a nice little outlet pass to Jenkins for a nice little finish and one with the left. [Music] [Applause] Sound up like you can’t handle me. I hope that’s what he said, right? At least gave you a version that could be relayed across the PG version. 22point lead. Stevenson curls around the hedge. Dear drop in and out, gets his own board back. Hesitation off the glass. a chance at a three-point play. Stevenson has everything’s a fights, especially in this third quarter. He doing what they can, but down 20. All right, brother. I’ll see you later. Love you, bro. And internally, I feel like sweaty as hell. It just feels crazy. Crazy. Hello. I appreciate it, man. What’s up, coach? You already know what I’m talking about. Yeah, I’m sweating it out. Let’s get this done. First time ever that year. Wow. What’s taking so long? Which way am I going? Mom first, dad second. Let’s check this out. It’s coming down. I’m sweating. I’m live. You can see the sweat. No, you’re fine. No, no, no. You can’t. But it’s okay. The Dallas Mavericks select Cooper flag. So proud of you. I love you so much, baby. You are sweating. Got Khan got picked during an interview. Oh my god. Stand up. Hello. What’s up? Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah. Was I I’ve been sweating all day. It’s been hot, man. But I’m excited. Absolutely. Yeah. 100%. Thank you. Yeah, I will. Fathers and sons from NBA head coaches. You can see that list with Bernie and JB Bicker Staff standing out right near the top. And for more on this, let’s check in with Gianna. You know, Bernie Bickerstaff’s jeans, they’re all over Detroit because not only is JB the head coach, but he’s got his grandson also on this summer league team, TJ Bickerstaff. Now, Bernie Vicker Staff, he has over 45 years of experience. He was the first black head coach at University of San Diego and in the NBA held almost every title, head coach, GM, scouts, executive of basketball operations. and his son JB. He was in town for some league obviously to support his team, but also because his father Bernie, he was being honored this past week, the Black Coach Association for his excellence in the NBA over the years. And he’s done so much for not only just his son, but you had so many coaches come out. Mark Mark came out, Jones, and he said, uh, excuse me, Mark Brown came out and Bill Handy came out, his son, and they all were actually crying. This was a night of just tears and celebration and no one could sum up just how much Bernie Baker staff has helped. But as you can see in Detroit, he has a lot of his genes out there who made and he has paved the way for them. That’s a great note and you know the coaching fraternity within the NBA of course a close-knit family and then as you can see I can get right here is TJ Baker Staff. So, right on Q going with the Bicker Staff theme, but you add a level of intimacy there when it’s the black coaches that have coached at this level in the NBA and the shared experiences that they have and Bernie Vicker staff, one of the icons, black coaches in college back in the NBA, what he’s been able to do. Yeah. I mean, and and they earned that right because they have created a staple. They made their mark. They’ve been very successful. So anytime they get a chance to, you know, like put any relatives on the team, you know, it’s it’s coming from a good place, right? It’s coming from a place where they have the experience and they’re just putting on guys that have firsthand experience. You talk about former players, sons having an impact on the game. It’s the same thing with coaches. I was off the foot not calling a kick ball and a heat number. Stevenson finishes it off with the layin and a timeout call Detroit. Just a couple of sloppy possessions. All you need. Actually, it’s going to not a timeout. It got away. A techn technical foul. So, you know, the signal of a T immediately after a turnover in a bucket assumed timeout instead of technical on coach Fipeno. Well, I think Detroit stopped playing because they expected a kick ball, which it was a kickball. Yeah. Stevenson hits the technical free throw. It looked like a kick ball. Yeah, it was, you know, but you know, that’s that’s one of those plays. It’s a tough play. You know, you stop playing because it’s a kickball, but you know, Miami took advantage of that. Venkins fade away off the front rim. Myron Gardner transition. Long strides in traffic. Actually wiped that off. That was touched by a Miami Heat player that when it was rolling around. Wow. So that’s unfortunate as Ger had what would have been two points. It was a great transition play off the arrow to his left. I mean I just don’t understand why you would even want to get close to the rim and you know tip it in. I mean, Butler’s trying to, you know, do the right thing, but just wiped away a great play by Gardner. Look at Jenkins pace though, right? He’s keeping his dribble inside the paint, using his body, makes a nice open play to his bigger staff. Bigger staff hits the ground hard, holding his head. here. I don’t like to see that. But, you know, I I you look at that play right there by Jenkins, right? He’s he’s creating a lot of plays for his teammates, right? And now bigger staff and all the guys around him want to be able to do all the little things, right? They want to crash the rebound. They want to make the second effort because a lot of times Jenkins is looking for them, right? They feel like they’re involved into the game and Jenkins has done a great job of playmaking. the knee to the head of Baker Staff, but no worse for the wear as he heads to the line. Yakonis heads out and seeing Marcus Williams come in for the Heat as well as Javvante Cook reinserted. DJ Vickerstaff makes the free throw. Was recently a player for a club based in Cyprus. 16 points per game there. Williams serves up top. Golden brings it back low. The sevenfooter Gardner goes climbing the ladder, but it’s retrieved by Detroit. Jenkins hesitation move gets hit in the head and that’s just right on cue DC of what you’ve been talking about all half long when it comes to the control of Jenkins, right? I mean, he’s patient. He’s able to survey the floor first. He’s looking at all his options when he’s coming out court. He’s looking to the left. He’s looking to the right. Okay, nobody’s open. I’m going to just take it. Get fouled. I mean, that’s great point guard play by Jenkins. Jenkins in this game has 14 points. You can see it. Seven assists. What you don’t see, zero turnovers. Being able to take care of the basketball. you know, first half, I think he only had one or two shots, right? And he did what he was supposed to do because the focus was on him, right? We’re going to play heavy defense, pick and roll. We’re going to trap Jenkins on the pick and roll. He made the right reads. He made the right plays in the first half. Now it loosens up the defense. Now he’s able to score the basketball at a high clip and he’s doing that right now with 14 points. So Jenkins, a little background on him. Undrafted in the 2024 class. He played for four different schools in his college career. University of Pacific Junior College, then Iona, and then finished up at St. John’s. And in Vegas, he has been performing in summer league. 17 points over the first three games per game, five assists a contest, and he’s continuing the strong play in game number four. I was watching or I was listening to LeBron’s podcast and he talked about Derek White’s path to the NBA and all the different challenges that he had to overcome, you know, going to junior college and going to a division, your low, you know, low mid major school. A lot of times it’s not going to always be perfect. you know, you’re going to go to different schools, but can you stay with it mentally and continue to make an impact no matter what level you’re playing at? Because Jenkins a prime example of that and now he’s one of the best players, not just for the team, but in summer league in general. That is the journey for a lot of players as swatted out of the air. Great job on the rotation from the backside to knock that one down. But you work with a lot of young players, high school age, even younger than that. Like, how do you instill, you know, that type of mentality that, hey, it’s not going to be likely the smoothest of rides and there’s going to be bumps along the way, but to not have that discourage you to know that, hey, you can still get to the final destination even if you take a couple of different turns. Absolutely. Everybody has a different path to success, right? It’s not going to always be easy. We’re not all top 10 picks. We’re not all blessed to have the ability to be 68 69 athletic, but some of us have to work. And that’s what you’re seeing right now. Some of these players have been through the rigors of the NBA. I mean, of college, and they’re doing everything they can to make the roster. And a lot of it is coming just playing hard. Corner three. That one falls. My Gardner. Miami has definitely picked up the tempo right now. They brought the lead within 13. [Music] the answer with the friendly touch. Shaz Laneir, we talked about him at the top of the show, the second round pick out at Tennessee. Yeah, he just hasn’t shot the ball really well, but he’s getting great looks and we all know he’s a capable scorer, but I just love his confidence, his ability to keep shooting even though shots are not falling. Laneir. Cook volleys. Golden gathers. Miami trying to get back in this one. Has trailed the entire way. Golden does save it but throws it away. 17 turnovers. Laneir turned up the aggressiveness. There’s a whistle. What do they call the offensive foul? We’ll confirm that when we return to Vegas. a buck 37 to go in the third. Detroit by 16. [Music] He led Marquette University to the Final Four in 2003. He would go on to earn 13 NBA All-Star selections, eight AllNBA team honors. A threetime champion with the Miami Heat, he was awarded the NBA Finals MVP in 2006. And on the international stage, he won a pair of Olympic gold medals playing for team USA, including gold in Beijing. Named to the NBA 75th anniversary team, he is being presented his Hall of Fame jacket and ring by his father, Dwayne Senior. His son, Zire. It is Dwayne Wade. Congratulations once again to Jim Valvano, Tony Parker, Greg Papovich, Pow Gasol, Dirk Nitzky, and Dwayne Wade. police. [Music] Welcome back to the NBA 2K26 Summer League. All right, so breaking news with Damen Lillard for ESPN finalizing a three-year $42 million contract to return to the Portland Trailblazers. You can see right there, just cue the coming home music and everybody loves to play that. And what a great story with Lillard. Of course, 11 seasons with the Blazers. You could tell he never really wanted to leave. Got those couple of years that maybe didn’t go according to plan in Milwaukee. And gets to head back to Portland. Of course, some rehab ahead of him coming back from the Achilles injury as Williams tough drive inside. Count the baskets. But a three-year contract, which means even after the rehab, Portland’s home. Yeah. Yeah, I mean look, as anybody that’s a fan of the Portland Trailblazers, this is something you are happy about. You know, Dame Lill has done such a phenomenal job for this organization. So, it’s great to see him back. You know, you hope you’re, you know, you hope that he gets healthy as soon as possible. But for him to be back in a Portland Trailh Blazers jersey, I mean, it’s such a unique and beautiful thing to see from a lot of us. And he’s such a great individual off the court. You’re just happy for him to be back home. The impact in the community there unmatched, you know, he gets a chance to go back and, you know, not exactly the same, but it kind of reminds me of, you know, Allan Iverson had his legendary run with the 76ers and then, you know, yeah, as all things happen, kind of came to an end, but towards the end of his career, he got the opportunity to go back. It wasn’t that long of a stint, his second stint with the Sixers, but hopefully for Lillard, the second run with the Blazers can have a little bit more success. Yeah. And it means a lot for a player’s mentality to finish off the career the right way for them, right? And I I’m not saying however long Dame has, but I’m sure him being back home in a Portland trail to New Jersey is something that he must prefer. I mean, there’s reports of him going to the Boston Celtics or Miami, but he chose Portland. So, they they hold a special place for him. That’s a nice little duck by Ziggler on the lob. But, I’m sure that community, that organization hold a special place for Dame, and you’re happy to see that. Garrison Brooks, that was a thunderous dunk and play strong defensively on the other end. A little bit too much contact and a foul. It’s a great look by Ziggler off the handoff. Keeping his dribble, keeping his head up to Brooks. Nice little pass to the big fella. So, exciting news for the Blazers and GM Joe Cronin, coach Chanty Bilips as Golden hits the free throw. And then for a team that had a great second half to the year, I mean, they kind of went under the radar, but the Blazers or one of the toughest teams after the All-Star break, even having Lillard around and then not to mention after the rehab and whether he can get back this upcoming season or not, they’re a rising team in a loaded West. Ziggler triggers and hits. I like Ziggler’s activity. He’s He’s creating a lot of problems for Miami off the bench with his ball movement, his defense. He’s talking, he’s being communicative. His energy is really, really good. And offensively, he’s looking great. Time to Rick Barnes, the coach of Tennessee looking at this game with a smile with Ziegler and Laneir. [Applause] Tough guards and net back courts. That’s a shot clock violation. Didn’t get it off. Didn’t hit the rim. 4.2 left. Talk about one way to make an impact, right, as a big, you got to be able to switch on smaller guards, right? It’s a switching league sometimes. And so you may be on a Daniel Liller or SGA and can you stay in front of the ball like Brook did? Ziggler is hacked. He’s a little bowling ball. He’s just going into the body creating contact. Playing with a lot of heart out there. The twotime SEC defensive player of the year with a word with Williams. Zakai Ziegler. His listed height is 59, a buck 70, and they issue double technicals on Ziggler. You knew it was happening. You knew it was going to come. That conversation lasted a little too long. I wish they could let us talk or let the guys talk a little bit more. You know, let them have fun, man. That’s what you are used to seeing at the park. Let them trash talk a little bit. Let get the juices flowing, man. be one to have like a separate broadcast feed of just nothing but like player chatter that sometimes might get blipped out. Yeah. I mean that’s on the national broadcast. Well, look, that’s what fans want to see. They want to see that competitive spirit from both teams, right? You know, fans want to see the competitive talk back and forth. I think it’s good for the league sometimes. Love the intensity. They’re bringing it in the early game in Las Vegas. Mai Ziegler 32% from three at Tennessee. Oh yeah, the ball support is strong. Pulls up for the win. Got it. Don’t touch me. I’m sizzling. Sizzling is an understatement. But it’s been a magical season for a motorcade. Dave Cunningham is such a gifted young player. He has been the leader for this Pistons team. A shot from Cunningham. able to change hands immediately. Oh my goodness. Right by Kade. Drives. Yeah. And brings the crowd to it. We’re seeing what he’s capable of, how he can carry a team. I love being a part of it. Kade way up for Asar Thompson. Gets to the rim, lays it up, lays it in, kiss the glass. What he’s doing right now is just incredible. Kingham averaging over 25 points per game. Then you look at the assist, that’s close to 10. Those are numbers that would put him in the history books. No one’s ever done that in a Detroit Pistons uniform in a year. I feel great, man. I feel great. In and throws it down. Often you see that technical is what a slam again. [Applause] [Music] 14. [Applause] [Music] Welcome back to Cox Pavilion here with Casper Yakuchunis. It’s been a battle of the guards in this one. How do you help lead your team in a racist deficit? I mean, we’re still kind of uh very down, you know. I think the defense is the key that we don’t um play the best defense and uh we have to be more connected on that end. The California Classic, you struggled shooting, but then you come to Vegas and have a really good showing here. When your shot isn’t falling, how do you make yourself productive in other ways? Yeah, I’m just trying to give all our effort on the defensive end and uh try to make my teammates better, too. You know, just control the things I can control. Thank you so much. I’ll let you back out there. Back to you. It was evolved defensively this possession for the Heat in the half court defense. Collision and a foul as we’ll stay here. Yakatonis 11 points in this game. Three for 10 shooting. See right around trying to curl loose right there the collision. But going back to Yakonis, what have you seen from this afternoon’s game here in Las Vegas? Well, he’s done a great job of handling pressure all game long. He’s getting pressure by Ziggler and Jenkins. But oh my goodness, lights out up top. Wow. Brooks, he caught a body and a half. Oh man. Bow on the Oh my goodness. Yeah, that caught it story. But Brooks with a pogo stick finish as the kids would say. Watch your head. Gorgeous cut inside and Garcia pays it off. Yeah, but going back to that point before that nice little do lob finish, but he’s Yakunis has done a great job of handling pressure from a big guard standpoint. But it’s what he said, right? When when he’s not shooting the ball well, it’s he only control what he can control and that’s on the defensive end. He’s done a great job of containing his man and as Clement hits another three to put them up 88 to 66. That net needs some sunscreen. Burn it up. 13 for 24. The Pistons from three. My Gardner. This is his first game in Vegas. He averaged nine points per game in the California Classic for the Heat. Ziggler tiptoes and is fouled. Let’s go back to that thunderous finish. Ziggler has made some really, really nice plays. Is big. And Brooks is letting you know that he dunked it with his left hand. If you didn’t notice, Chris, that’s why he looked at his left. Knew there wasn’t something wrong with it. That almost had Stickum on it. is able to catch, gather and finish in one fell swoop would make a Monro St. Brown proud. Seagler hits the free throw. This was an exciting year all around for Detroit. Not just the basketball, but the turnaround. It was a wonderful season for the Detroit Lions all the way up until their playoff loss. Balo is bumped. Fouled down lowaro played his final year of college ball at Indiana. [Music] Garcia commits the foul. He has five. Of course, you get 10 of them in summer league because we want to see the players on the court. Only 10. Only 10. Well, so then there’s no excuse. Well, there’s no excuses for you not to play hard and physical. Yes. The pass Gardner hands ball tear drop is true and will strut to the strike. Great pass by Valenunis on the weak side pass. Another extra pass to Garner. Garner driving a basket on the baseline and nice easy dump down to Ballow for a nice little floater. That’s where bigs can be very impactful too offensively, right? It’s moving within the scenes when your guards are driving to the basket and not getting into their way. It’s being in the right place at the right time and being able to finish with a nice little skill shot floater like that. Here we go. Being running the floor. Garcia. Gorgeous. Oh, you hope he’s okay. Grabs the ankle. But the whole unit of Detroit helps him up and he will head to the line and try to finish this one off. Nice unselfish play. Detroit is just playing unselfish throughout the whole entire game and you can tell they have really really good team chemistry. Garcia hits the floor. How many players did you see pick them up? Chris four. Exactly. Right. It’s it’s a product of what Bicker Staff has created. This is the environment that he wants for his ball club and they’re exemplifying that. You saw what that can do and the coach culture of Oklahoma City for example, right? Can’t do an interview with just one of those guys. Team, right? Yeah. Up at two. Gardner defended by Garcia. Gardner good. Tries and fire on the jump shots. Ziegler has he on the other side and bumped late for the life of a player who’s listed at just 59. And then a late technical foul as well. Great defense by Detroit, but better shot by Gardner. Dot him in his eye. So the foul on Cook and then late Gardner came on and bumped Ziegler and he’s called for the technical foul. Continues to get a little chippy in the second half. I’m not mad at Gardenner’s chippiness, right? you need somebody to kind of bring that level of intensity and and y he wants to win but I mean obviously you don’t want to see no dirty plays but his competitive spirit has been great he’s 19 points he’s been contributing really well for Miami Heat competing not a bad thing he of course love the players who can display that effort [Music] Cook heads to the bench. Danger in for the Heat. Brought up the NBA news of the day. Damen Lillard, the return to Portland. Three-year contracts reported by ESPN. A mention of, you know, players who are legends of a franchise, have a, you know, brief period with a different team and then returning back to the squad that they’re known for. Dwayne Wade, of course, he’d like that move from Yakonis dumps it off. The Balo gets fouled. Unbelievable play. And that’s what you want to see from Yakunis, right? You know, smaller guys pressure you. You know, you got to find a way to get around, make a play, and that’s what he’s doing. Had his head up the whole entire time when he went to the basket. Was able to make a nice dish out to Bellow. Gakon is falling to the 20th pick in the draft and the Heat eager to scoop him up. [Applause] Summer League Access one app with the NBA app. Download today to follow tomorrow’s stars and keep up with every game with real time highlights and scores. [Music] We’re in the dead heat of summer and it feels like every day you get more NBA news. Lillard today, who knows what will be the case tomorrow. Had the Bradley Beal buyout just yesterday in the waving stretch from the Suns and it looks like he’s going to be a member of the Los Angeles Clippers. It’s a lot of good movement for NBA fans cuz you just never know what may happen the next day, will happen within that day. I can’t imagine Sean’s phone is blowing up like crazy, just picking up all these different news. Under seven minutes to play in this one. Detroit’s let it the entire way. Danger. That hook shot looked a little dangerous. It’s good move right here by Jenkins. Front iron and off. Yakonis chases but it goes to Brooks. Three on three hoops. Steps it to a three. Bullseye for Kes. The former Duke Blue Devil Trevor Kees. [Music] Been in the GLeague each of the last three seasons. Leaner around and out and Detroit on the run. Jenkins of the pack. The Cavs finds in the corner. A little too much from Clintman. Doll ricochets out of bounds with 552 to play in the fourth. Yakona showing the heat efforts, but in the end it’s Detroit just like all afternoon long that gets the better of things. [Music] This copyrighted broadcast of the National Basketball Association may not be retransmitted, reproduced, rebroadcast, or otherwise distributed or used in any form without the express written consent of the end. Hey, what’s up guys? I’m Casper and today we hang out in the industry pizza. This your first time in New York? Yeah, second. Yeah, I’ve been one game we played here but for one day in winter it was so cold. Now it’s so hot. That’s the New York way. You’re already eating like a New York. New York. You fold it like that. So, you’re already eating like a New Yorker. It’s good. It’s like I expected something like this and it’s pretty good to be honest. Just it’s the beginning of the something new, you know, the beginning of my dreams to continue reaching my goals. So it it will be cool, but you know, I have to start working from day one. So summerly league continues. Coming up next on NBA TV, have the Hawks and the Grizzlies tonight, ESPN 7 Eastern, Spurs, they take on the Hornets. And then to round out the night on ESPN, I don’t care if it’s summer league or the NBA Finals, Celtics, Lakers, is something just like that cold play without the awkward cutaway. Garrison Brooks thunders it down. I love Garrison Brooks activity from a big possession. A big position because his role is what’s causing so much pressure causing so much pressure on the defensive end for Miami. I mean, he’s sending the pick. He’s rolling hard to the basket. I think this might be his second or third lob. Great out of timeout play. Even better find by Jenkins. Garrison Brooks has shown the hops in this second half. He’s up to 10 points. [Music] [Applause] Back to the baskets. Ninja rifles across the paint in the double bing lineup playing with Balo. Pete turn it over again. The pass Jas Laneir. No. this second half. Jenkins step back three and Balo. He gets the rebound for Indiana for the Miami Heat at the center position. You don’t have to go far back for KL Wear is what he did as a big at Indiana in year number one for the Heats. One of the most productive rookie years. In fact, he was the rookie of the month in the NBA in January. Was top six in rookie of the year votes [Music] and he’s looked impressive in summer league thus far. I mean, you get a chance to watch him play. I mean, he’s one of those bigs where he’s not just rolling. He can pick and pop. He could do a little bit of everything on the defensive end. He’s very active. He has a chance to start for their exposure in this next this upcoming season. And I can’t wait to see the maturation and his progress moving forward. Love what Gianna mentioned earlier on in this broadcast how you know coach Bolstra challenged where professionalism word came up and make sure you’re on it playing in Vegas and wear responded well. His next two games were stellar and not playing in this one but 17 points per game in the three Vegas games. back-to back 21 point games after being challenged playing for Pat Riley and their exposure. You’re going to learn how to be a professional very quick in your career. And what a better place to be drafted to because these are guys that are experienced. They’ve seen it all. As makes a nice little outlook pass to Clip for the jam. Nice little look up ahead by Jenkins. But as a young player, you want to be drafted to an organization like this. You know, this is how you learn the rigors of the NBA and kind of expedite your career early on because you got guys like Pat uh Pat Riley, Eric Spraer are going to teach you how to play at a high level early. Yakonis turns it over, gets it back. By the way, that last bucket for Detroit was the 10th assist for Dannis Jenkins to go along with 16 points. That’s a guard. you’ve got your head up. The awareness to know somebody is down there is such a key aspect to your game. As soon as he knew he got the rebound, he knew Clement was going down for easy bucket. He’s just been playing phenomenal. Jenkins speaking for his 10th or 11 assists. Yakon is wide. 16 points, 10 assists, and no turnovers for Jenkins. You’re getting the upside of the playmaking without the downside of turnovers. Ball in his hands with three minutes left. Crossover dribble. Blinding speed. Everything but the buckets. [Music] That limp pass was nearly intercepted. Butler retreats with under three left and a whistle. Bump on Clintman. Yields a stoppage with 247 to go. And Detroit set for their third Vegas win. NBA champion 26. She’s a shooter. That’s her specialty. Your brother helped you with your basketball game sometimes, but like mostly I teach him. Hey, this is Andrew Wiggins. We’re here in my house in in Vaughn. This is where I grew up. A lot of the great memories you can see against the walls. This is more of my mom’s stuff when she’s in the Olympics and Florida State. My dad played for the Chicago Bulls, the Houston Rockers, and 76ers. This probably one of my main achievements I got was a Nate Smith player of the year award. So, that’s a big achievement for me. Every day after school, I would just come home, you know, for a little bit, eat, and then go right back over there in the back of the schoolyard and just play with my friends. This was my second home from second grade to to grade 8. I remember just watching all my brothers playing. I’m here like this just just sitting waiting for my turn. You know, just soon as the game done, I’ll try to go on the court and see you play. Anytime we sit back down, I mean maybe next time I’ll just wait for my turn. [Music] about you. Everything about you. You know, Chris, you mentioned Jenkins with 10 assists and just three turnovers. A lot of it is just him getting into the paint, looking for others and not just for himself, being the point guard that he’s been playing all all summer long or all season or summer long in summer league so far. But it’s his intensity level, right? It’s become contagious. Everybody’s feeding off his energy, whether it’s him picking up full court, whether it’s him getting into the paint and creating for others or him scoring a basket or basketball himself. I mean, a lot of his teammates feel that energy and they you can tell that they love playing with him and playing with a point guard like him. And I’m already a fan. I mean, I just love his intensity. He’s picking up full court defensively. You know, he’s creating a lot of havoc going inside the paint, drawing two to the basketball, making the easy pass, creating open shots for his teammates, and that’s the reason why they’re up 102 to 80. Yeah, everybody’s story is different. Jennifer Zenkins. I was drafted in last year’s draft 2024, played at four different schools in his college career. You know, every moment that he is on the floor in a setting like this is valuable. And he’s showing coaches, scouts, whoever what he can do with opportunity, and you look at some of his shots. He was not forcing the issue, not one bit. Everything came to him. The game slowed down. He was able to make the right reads whether it’s for himself or for his teammates. And as a point guard, that’s what you want to see from your point guards, right? You don’t want to see a point guard just being sped up and thinking about his own shot. Can you be able to get your team involved at a high level? He’s done that in the last three, four games. Really started out in the first quarter of this game. Da foul where Detroit hit five of their first six threes in the first quarter. They came out of the gates roaring and playing off of that Jenkins energy. Yes. You know, point guards set the tone. They set the table. You know, when your point guards unselfish, the whole team’s unselfish. It’s a simple game. He had 10 assists in his minutes. The Heat team in this game with 11 assists. Yeah, he thinks that’s funny. Jenkins likes that note. Of course, here at the pavilion, the jumbotrons have what you’re seeing. So, when we’re showing him, he’s can look at himself on the video screen. Yeah, he deserves it. He’s played phenomenal. [Music] Danger inside. It’s funny. You see it in the NFL, right? When you watch football, when a player’s breaking away from the defense, you can see their eyes looking at the video screen to see them or see who’s trailing them. And that’s always a fun little look at a, you know, breakaway score where the uh ball carrier’s eyes are. That video screen is pretty big. Gets a lot of attention. Another good point about Jenkins and even Ziggler. I mean, you see the valuiness of point guard play in the NBA, right? You have a great point guard that’s able to navigate the defense and make plays. It just does so much for your team and that’s why point guards come at a premium and there’s so many talented point guards right now in the NBA that tough bucket inside DJ Bickerstaff. [Music] Coach Baker staff will have a fun roster to work with this upcoming season for the Detroit Pistons. The continued growth of Cade Cunningham. The reinsertion of Jaden Ivy coming back healthy now with the uh different burden though of expectations. You said it DC, they were the underdogs. That bucket goes. Count it. Marcus Williams. They’re the underdogs going into last season. It’s a little bit different when you have the weight of, okay, you’re supposed to do this for sure. I mean, you know, it’s a lot easier when nobody’s paying attention to you and you’re sneaking up on teams and you’re getting wins here and there, but you know, everybody’s taking Detroit very, very seriously now, especially the success they had last season. So, they’re not going to be able to sneak them on everything. I think every team understands how hard they have to play to meet and match their intensity level. I’m trying to remember the journey of your Pacers teams, but didn’t have something similar where, you know, you guys sort of had the breakthrough and then followed it up with another year of excellence. For sure. I I remember my first year it was the same thing like Detroit. That’s a nice little second ever putback by bigger staff. But when you’re a young team, you’re trying to gain the respect. and you’re underdogs. You you you’re doing everything you can to to compete with some of these upper echelon teams. That second time around, it’s no more of that. Everybody kind of respects you. And so now it’s about building what you started last season and that’s what Detroit’s doing. But that’s what Kate Cunningham has done, right? He’s he’s put himself in that category. As Williams makes the drive to his left. He’s put himself in that category as one of the best point guards to lead his team night in and night out and he invites that challenge. The other I think he talked about one of his interviews during the playoffs is he wants to be one of the best players in the NBA. Not just the best point guard, the best player and that’s the type of conversation and talk that you want from your best player in Kenham. and the sleeps he took. And you could see it even though the Pistons weren’t racking up a lot of wins the first couple of years, but now I think a lot of people got to see it as the Pistons started to gather that national attention. He’s a guy who plays with a calmness to him. Great size. He’s smooth inside of 30 seconds. Balo rejected but he will head to the free throw line. Fouled from behind Baker Staff number 39. That’s a lot of size in there with this unit for the E. I was just looking at Dja Valo listed Volo 275. Danger 255. I’m just glad we’re sitting here. Okay. Cuz we probably wouldn’t compete at some of those guys at their sizes and height. You mean you did it though? I I never was undersized guard. You went up against these guys. Yeah. Sometimes I don’t know how but it’s a lot of work that needs to be put in especially at my size guards at my size at that position. But you know, you think about some of these players. It’s a positionless league, right? You know, these point guards are not just 6 feet. They’re 6’5, 66, 67. SGA is 66, right? And so you got to be able to handle bigger guards at every position and bigger wings too at that. But great effort by both teams today. Pistons came out with the victory. Jumped out in front from the opening gates and never looked back. 108. The Pistons beat the Heat, which is tough to do in Vegas. They go to three and one in the Las Vegas summer league. Heat dropped to one and three. Yakon is for the Heat. 15 points. A double double for Dannis Jenkins. 16 points, 10 dimes. That wraps up game number one from the Pavilion. We got more coming up on NBA TV. Hawks, Grizzlies, Pistons get the win. [Music] [Applause]
