The New Atlanta Hawks Has The Blueprint To Shock The NBA
The Atlanta Hawks have really doubled down and put together great talent around Trey Young that benefits him. After moving on from Dejonte Murray and that situation just not working out, the Hawks pivoted and found another way to build a functional team around Trey. With Trey being a smaller guard with elite passing skills, you need to surround him with lengthy active defenders, athletes, and offball scorers. They have a young forward in Zachary Rishet who is a lengthy athletic wing who has a quick trigger from deep who projects to be an elite offball level player. Zachary is a massive piece in the Hawks transition offense as he runs the floor hard, gets out in open space, and does a good job in making himself available. His three-point shooting with more reps and comfortability and growth from his rookie year, he should rise into being one of the best three-point shooters in the league. just that quick trigger I love from him. Jaylen Johnson is a guy who is extremely versatile, can be used as a screener, lob target, transition attacker, make plays, cutter, downhill threat, and a defender who can defend in multiple ways and defend multiple positions. He provides himself as a secondary option next to Trey. He’s another lengthy, athletic dude that helps in the Hawks transition attack. Johnson’s a guy who was really approaching that all-star territory, averaged 18, 10, and five before he went down with injury. I think you do want to see him kind of tap more into that jump shooting ability and selfcreation and continue to grow his game from there, becoming another lead ball handler. But I think he’s progressing fine as a young player. It’s just the injuries, man. The injuries is really just killing everything. It’s killing the whole vibe of that Hawks team and Johnson on Kongu who I believe should have been the starting center for ages now since Clint Capella’s game was on the decline over the years. Ona provides the same lob threat playmaking and just possessing better touch around the rim compared to Clint. There’s more offensive versatility that he provides. I still think Clint is the better rim protector, but on Yucka executes different schemes better and could be a capable switch guy. Dyson Daniels. He is Mr. Most improved player. A tremendous defender who racked up three steals a game last season, which is just absolutely freaking ridiculous. He has some of the best hands, best defensive footwork in the league. Extremely mobile and on balance. Just a plus defender on and off ball. And though he is known for his defense, I do want to look at some pieces of his offense that took a leap. The three-point shooting can be much better from him, but he has shown some juice as a capable ball handler who can make clean passes and initiate the offense at times. He can operate as a cutter, screener, and has the ability to attack in a straight line, get inside, and hit a floater. All four of these guys I’ve done breakdowns for in the past, so I really urge you guys to check out those videos. The Dyson and Zachary videos are from 2024 to 2025. The Jaylen and Ono ones is from a couple years back. And with these four guys next to Trey providing that length, athleticism, offball scoring, capable ball handlers. The only question mark here from these four is the shooting. With Zachary being the best of the core four. So in response to all that, well, we need more shooting. What can we do with the shooting? Why not trade for one of the best stretch bigs in the league in Chris Sporzingis who you can plug in as that four or five vineyear lineups. Chris shot 41% from three on six attempts a game last season. All of his attempts are off the catch and his range can extend from really deep from the three-point line. His main area of attack is above the break where he can pop into space there or be a trailer who can get that three ball off. This is another lengthy guy who can also be a shot blocker and rim protector when healthy. So, it adds more into that size and length around Trey as much as possible. Chrisaps is more of a strong popper than he is a roller. He isn’t explosive off of rolls, but if Trey gets double teamed, he can pop right into that mid-range space and get off a jump shot there. He doesn’t catch lobs in traffic very well and he really needs a strong passer in those situations which playing next to Trey Young that helps right. Chrisaps did have an up and down season struggling with his health and the biggest question mark when having him on your roster is how healthy can the guy be. The value of Chrisaps is great because you do retain that strong rim protection you lost with Clint Capella, but also you can maximize spacing around Trey with having bigs really having to stay tight to Chrisaps in fear of that three-point shot. That will open up more of the pick and pop game as Trey is a guy who loves to get himself in the paint for floaters or jump shots. And with Chris Daps forcing the big to think about helping on Trey can make the Hawks offense much more dynamic. With the threat of Chrisaps’s three ball, his most underrated skill is attacking closeouts. If Trey Young, Jaylen Johnson can get the defense scrambling and Chris Staps having to attack a slowfooted big or a smaller player off the catch. Chris Staps has the handle to do that. Put the ball down on the floor and get inside off of that. You don’t really have to draw up plays for Chrisaps to be effective and he doesn’t need the ball in his hands much. He is best suited as a third option for your team. He is pretty jump shot reliant as a player and he is more of a face up guy than a pure back you down post type scoreer. At times he just doesn’t have the lower body stability or strength to really move guys. So oftent times you’ll see him settle for jump shots than putting together moves to get closer to the rim. The Celtics, Wizards, and Mavericks pushed a lot of times with getting Chrisap’s mismatches to attack, and he has a threat to just shoot right over guys with ease. If there’s a massive height difference, and this plays into his mid-range game. If Chris Aaps’s jump shot is going, he can honestly rise into being a main option and take over games. If not, it can be a bit sketchy on how you could play him, and he’s going to have to rely on a lot of creation from your guards to really set him up. Luke Canard is another added shooter who is lethal off the catch with space, and Canard also serves as another additional playmaker you can have out on the floor. He’s a capable ball handler, capable working out of ball screens. He isn’t great at creating shots for himself, but he does recognize space and openings in a defense to where he can make a pass or connect a pass. Nquille Alexander Walker was also a very nice pickup, a slim defender who has active hands, quick feet, and strong screen navigation skills. You can never get enough of guys who can get around screens really, really well. He’s that type of player where he can shoot threes, attack closeouts, defend, and finish at the rim. He’s mostly geared as an offball player with also some on ball capabilities. Just the lineup versatility when looking at this Hawks team is so so good because they can lean into lineups that specialize in playing big with KPA, Zack, and Johnson. That’s a ton of size and length. Or they can lean into an alldefensive lineup with Dyson and Walker leading the way. or they can lean into lineups maximizing shooting with Kennard, KP, and Zachary. They can go small and go big and that amount of versatility, especially defensively where they can go to Anka, Johnson, Zachary, Dyson, and just say, “Hey, switch everything.” And then Trey can at least be helpful as a dude playing the passing lanes. Teams are still going to target Trey, let’s just be honest, because of his size. But Trey has been working to be active on that end. He’s not a plus defender by any means, but the effort is still there. But this type of roster with a lot of defensive relief, a lot of defensive talent around Trey, that really excites me. Really want to see how the offenses approach attacking their defense, how Elena will counter with their defensive help. Of course, health is the biggest factor in all of this, but having that lineup versatility, different styles you can play, it really makes you a threat when playoff time comes around. The pick and roll duo of Young and Johnson is one of the best in the league. One of the best duos in the league. So imagine the space in the lineup of KP Walker and Canard can be a ton of space for Young and Johnson to just work with. And imagine the chaos with just Trey Young double drags, double ball screens with Chris popping and Johnson rolling effectively and Trey being a sneaky dude in the mid-range to draw fouls and create shots and make clean passes. I just can’t wait to see this group play. If you really wanted to nitpick the roster, I think one of the things that comes to mind is that they can get an upgrade in a scorned guard who can come off the bench and be kind of a spark plug for the team. I do kind of worry about the offense taken a bit if Trey Young isn’t on the floor. Yes, you do have capable ball handlers, but like it’s not really anyone else near the creation level of Trey Young. The main guy I’m looking for in this area, it’s probably not going to happen next season. It’s still a work in progress, is going to be on Zachary. I do want to see some reps with him working with the ball in his hands. At least a little bit. Just a little bit of it, just to see some flashes. And I have shooting concerns with this roster, too. In lineups of Johnson, Dyson, Trey, do you put Anka in those lineups? Does Anekka evolve into being a stretch guy who can shoot the three ball at times at a high level? I feel Dyson and Johnson really would have to prove themselves as shooters. Trey Young is also a weird just a weird case. I think he’s been dealing with some sort of injury last season. I don’t know off the top of my head cuz he can be very streaky and high volume on threes. So, he is always hovering around that mid30s percentage. that three-point percentage has to come up for Trey Young cuz he’s not a guy who puts massive pressure at the rim or scores at the rim efficiently. So, the shooting from him has to be top tier. But anyways, I think that really sums it up for the Hawks. I I love what they’re doing. I love what they’re building. I love how they’re steering the ship around in the Trey Young era, getting away from what they tried with with the Jonte Murray. And the thing is, I know people will harp on how they failed with that. This is a league where you have to try stuff and you have to fail at stuff and that’s kind of just life in general. So, but things are looking up now for the Hawks and let’s see if they can actually make a push for the playoffs. That’ll wrap it up for this video. I hope the players can keep beeing healthy bc the team is going to be fun
They should try to sign Westbrook or Brogdon
This is a great looking team, but let's get real. They aren't going anywhere unless Trae makes some effort to clean up his game. No one expects him to suddenly turn into a great defender, and he's clearly got no interest in playing off the ball, but at the very least he could stop jacking 3s at the slightest chance and he could stop turning the ball over at rates that would make Harden blush. If he makes the effort, then this team could make some noise in the playoffs. Another typical Trae Young season shooting in the low 40s and averaging over 4 TOs a game and it won't matter who they play next to him.
