Matt Reynolds NOT CONCERNED About Baylor Scheierman Shooting Struggles | Celtics Summer League

moved the most over the course of the time here at summer league. One stand up. I’m not going to sing this one guy out. I think uh everybody has kind of taken, you know, one or two aspects of their game and like really kind of attack them head on both on the court in film and the games and practice. Um I feel like everybody’s gotten better at something. And I know for you this is a change. You’re in the head coaches seat, but for other members of the coaching staff, like what other kinds of responsibilities were assumed that are different than usual? Like I know Nana and was doing the challenges. Like what other things like that? Yeah. So Nana and Sham have uh whoever’s behind the bench with the computer is uh kind of our go-to guy for the challenges in the game, but then each of them also had defensive scouts for summer league. And they were active participants in our regular season scouting workflow, but they’ve been doing onc court walkthroughs and stuff, which is something they they did not have a whole lot of uh reps at uh during the regular season. And uh you know I remember doing that uh when I first got scouts at summer league. And so everybody kind of gets you know a little bit of uh added or different responsibilities that that they normally would have you know our full strength as a staff. And the coaches that’s the baseline like Tony and DJ like ones that have coached summer league. Are they more like they you kind of letting you guys figure it all out? Like what’s how does that work? Yeah. So, they’ve been in they’re in meetings, but they’re um much more of of an advisory role where, you know, they like you said, they’ve both had the head coaching job uh the last two summers. Um but at the same time, anything we’re we’re trying to implement uh with this group, we’re thinking about something we may uh take from this summer and apply to the fall. It’s always good to have their uh their ear and just just kind of bounce ideas off of them and they they communicate what they see out there and they’ve been very helpful to me and to the whole staff. sort of along those lines. You don’t have anything specific, but has there been any product that you’ve been using like practice stuff for the upcoming season? Like, can you talk to Joe about that? Is that something that has been on your mind at all? Yeah, a little bit. Um, I’d say on both sides of the floor, there’s a couple things where at least taking a a cursory look at, but the style of play and the rules were such a different uh it’s a different game to different fouls in the short game. uh um each team having 10 order like there’s so many differences there that we feel compelled to play to those rules while we’re in that game that don’t quite translate to do you try to system like that you have 10 absolutely so what sort of things are you looking at you’re like okay this is different yeah so the uh bonus there still the bonus is still the second foul in the last two minutes so our guys a little bit more aggressive until we get to the last two minutes of each quarter. So like if we’ve done a good job of staying on foul trouble, our guys have been very aggressive for Steelers for sure. In general, you guys have been pressing a lot and happening a lot around summer league, especially compared to years past. You feel like that’s a trend that’s going to carry forward into the preseason, start of the regular season? I do think a lot of the backboard pressure has been uh was still there in prior summer leagues as well. Obviously some some successful uh NBA playoff teams had the last couple years. So for this last season, you know, obviously there’s going to be an extra attention on that. So yeah, you want to at least take a look at it, but you know, what does that mean for, you know, the energy that you players have? What guys? Who do you who do you have pick up in the back court? you know, over the course of the last couple years, Jaylen uh would apply some back court pressure, uh whether it was opponent specific or match specific, things like that. Um but yeah, it’s kind it’s kind of like an evolving thing that I think every team has tried it in in the last summer leagues, but you know, how it gets applied to the NBA season is still kind of up for discussion. Baylor struggles with his shot a little bit during summer league. um he seems like he hasn’t been overly concerned about it, but there’s a big track record of guys like struggling in summer league having a great year or the reverse like being great at summer league and not being great in the NBA. Do you tell guys like not to over value their own individual performance or shot making because it doesn’t necessarily always translate or is it like they just kind of figure it out like how how active are you in having like those conversations? Yeah, I mean it’s the same thing as a a four or five game sample in December, January, February. Obviously, uh they are, you know, Baylor’s got a larger role here than he had during the regular season, but any player with a smaller sample, uh shooting slump, you over a four or five game stretch, it’s really nothing to to get too concerned

LAS VEGAS — After practice in Las Vegas, Celtics Summer League head coach Matt Reynolds downplayed concern over Baylor Scheierman’s cold start from three. Reynolds compared the small sample in Vegas to a brief mid‑season dip, saying:

“It’s the same thing as a 4 or 5 game sample in December, January, February… it’s really nothing to get concerned about.”
