Jaden Ivey: The Detroit Pistons X-Factor…
With a fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons selected a guard out of Purdue and after playing some of the best basketball of his career. He broke his left fibula in a freak accident. And this next season is extremely important for his future. And his name is Jaden Ivy. Welcome to Basketball Intuition. I’m your host, Ethan Simon. Today we’re going to be talking about Jade Ivy. Sorry about the shadow. I’m still trying to fix the lighting. Like I mentioned, this next season is going to be really important for Jay Ivy. It’s a contract year. We’re just going to be diving into Jayy’s games today. I want to start with his build and his frame. Then we’re going to go to the playmaking and we’ll just go off from there. Okay, so Jaden Ivy is 23 years old. He is 6’4 with a 69 wingspan. That’s a really nice wingspan. I like that a lot. He’s somewhere around 200 lb. He’s a really great athlete with speed and strength alongside a 40-in vertical. Like I mentioned, he did just break his left fibula. So, we hope that he can come back and still be as athletic and twitchy and quick as he was before. But to the playmaking, I have a few things I want to talk about here. I feel like people have began to really underrate Jay Na’vi’s playmaking. And I want to remind you in his rookie season K Cunningham had a stretch fracture and only played 12 games which meant that Jay Na’vi had the ball in his hands way more than he did before and he was a lead playmaker. His rookie season he had his highest usage percentage and it was at 27.7%. Now listen to this. His assist to usage percentage was in the 90th percentile. That is elite. He’s not just a guard that can only play the shooting guard. He can only play the two. He is a viable playmaker. But the thing about it is they have Kade Cunningham, which means he doesn’t need to be the lead ball handler because Cade is elite. And that just lets Jay Na’vi stay in that shooting guard type of role where he gets to play off the ball where he is so effective. But whenever Ivy is in the game and Cunningham isn’t in the game, he can still be a lead ball handler and he can be that playmaker that you want. But Kade is just an elite playmaker, so it lets Ivy play that offball shooting guard type role. But again, that doesn’t mean that he can’t playmake. I like how JB staggers their minutes, too. Ivy comes out like midway through the first and then checks back in for K. Cunningham with like two to three minutes left in the quarter. I do want to say though, whenever Ivy is running that second unit, there are times where I feel like he’s not doing enough and he’s just standing on the wing when he needs to have the ball in his hands and be that lead playmaker. But whenever we talk about Jayen Ivy actually as a playmaker, I feel like he had really good vision. I thought he made some really great skip passes throughout the season, made some really good reads. I also like how he moves after the pass. I feel like he relocates well on the perimeter. And also, there are times where he made some really nice cuts. And also just simple stuff like going from the corner up to the wing, making himself available for somebody to get him the ball and just stuff like that that I liked a lot that you love to see from an offball player. And like I said, that’s where Ivy is really going to be at his best where he can play that offball role. Also, I felt like he looked pretty good in the pick and roll. It wasn’t anything special or generational, of course, but he looked comfortable there. I liked how he was able to weave in and out of traffic sometimes. I like how he worked with the big men just knowing that they’re bigger and just throwing it up there for Jaylen Duran. Good dump off passes to them as well. We know Jay Ivy is a slasher. He’s going to get to that basket, so it’s nice whenever he can just dump it off to the bigs. But on the flip side, I feel like he was also really good in the drive and kick, just getting into the middle of the defense, penetrating in, and then kicking it back out to the guys on the perimeter. And also a very good transition passer overall. He’s just really good in the transition. Super athletic. We’re talking about a guy that can shoot the ball, that can get to the basket, the mid-range, the floater, pass the ball. He can do everything you want from a transition player with his athleticism. One negative thing that I do have to say about his playmaking and his passing and stuff like that is dumb turnovers, like jump pass turnover type stuff, like picking the ball up too early without having a clear-cut plan or driving into the paint with his head down and not looking around anywhere else and it just leads to a bad turnover. If he could cut down on stuff like that, it’d be really great. I mean, he’s averaging three turnovers a game. His turnover percentage is just 16%. That’s the 11th percentile. That’s garbage. What turnover percentage means is how often did the player turn the ball over when using a possession? Again, his was 16%. That’s not very good. But overall, his playmaking isn’t crazy flashy or anything like that. It’s a lot of easy, simple passes that he makes, but that’s exactly the kind of stuff that you want out of a two guard when you already have a Kate Cunningham. But now, let’s get to the finishing and the slashing because this is where Jay Na’vi really excels as we know. Like I mentioned, he’s got a crazy burst of speed. He’s super twitchy and fast. Like, it’s ridiculous. But overall, the finishing is incredible. He finishes so well through contact. I have been waiting to pull out this percentage for so long, and it’s good enough, so I’m going to say it. His N1 percentage is in the 51st percentile, 23%. Which means, you know, what percentage of shooting fouls drawn, did the player also make the shot? So, one out of every four times he draws a shooting foul, it ends up in an N1. And his hang time is ridiculous. So, he just gets to do whatever he wants in the air. If he wants to go left and then right or right and then left, he can just do whatever he wants. And one thing I do love about his finishing ability is the fact that he is also very comfortable with that left hand. It’s not like he’s just finishing on the right side, or it’s not like he’s finishing on the left side with his right hand all the time. He is comfortable finishing with that left hand, but overall he’s got really nice touch around the rim. Like I said, he finishes well through contact. And like I mentioned, whenever he wants to get downhill and he’s putting that head down, like that is what he is going to do. I love that. The fact that like he goes at your hip. I’ve talked about this so many times before with other guys. Some people are I’m going to go around you. Jayen Ivy is I’m going to go through your hip because I’m strong and I’m also faster than you. And also, I feel like he uses his long arms very well. Like I said, he’s got a 69 wingspan and a 6’4 body. That’s really great. So, it really just helps him out in every area of finishing those scoop shots, floaters, finger rolls. It just makes it easier that he’s able to use his long arms to outreach defenders. And the last thing with the finishing that I wanted to talk about is I love whenever he gets that weaker matchup. He knows what time it is. It’s break you down time. I’mma get a bucket on you time. If you’re still here and enjoying the video, make sure to hit that like button. I’ll play the recorder for a like. Also, do what you want with this information, but in the restricted area, he shot 60%. In the paint non-restricted area, he shot 40%. And on layups, he shot 52% on 134 attempts last season. Oh, and one more. On finger rolls, he shot 65 and a half%. Again, do what you want with this information, but I feel like I could at least give it to you. Okay, now let’s get over to the shooting. I want to hit you with a bunch of percentages real quick. Well, not that many, but a few. Last season, he shot 45% on catch and shoot threes. He is super super confident on those catch and shoot threes. And one thing that I did want to mention, like I said, 45% on catch and shoot threes this season. Last season it was 35 1.5%. That is a huge jump. Going up 10% in one season is ridiculous. Now on pull-up threes, he still was very comfortable here, but he wasn’t as efficient. He shot 35%. Now, this was kind of weird and it caught me off guard. His shooting percentage from the left corner is significantly worse than the right corner. Over the last two seasons, he shot 25% from the left corner, but from the right corner, he shot 48%. You know, it’s typical to see guys more comfortable in one corner than the other one, but this big of a percentage jump and difference is just crazy to me. 25 to 48% is wild. But above the break, he was very efficient last season. He shot 43%. I do want to mention just while we’re here that he was highly efficient this last season. He was around the same volume every single season, but every single season, he’s gotten more and more efficient. If we look at the field goal percentage, 41%, then 43%, now 46%. If we look at the three-point percentage, it was 34%. then it went down a little bit 33% and then it shot back up to 40%. Another thing that I really like about Jay Na’vi shooting ability is he has deep range and that jumper looks so good regardless if he’s close or if he’s far away on the three-point line. That jumper is still going to look really good. He’s got a nice catch and shoot motion. It looks about the same every single time. Super consistent jump shot, but yeah, he’s got some crazy good range. I feel like I mentioned this earlier, but again, he takes space on the court really well. Like I feel like he does a really good job with spacing, move moving around on the perimeter. And not only can Jay Na’vi just shoot the three ball, he also can get to that mid-range area. He shot 40% on mid-range pull-ups last season. He’s got a nice little fadeaway game. You don’t see many turnarounds or anything like that from him, but he can fade it away, stop on a dime whenever he’s driving to the inside for easy mid-range, just stuff like that. And overall, just as a score, Jay Navi is very wellrounded. He can get to the floater, the mid-range, the three-point shot. He can finish on the inside. He does everything you want from a scoring standpoint. And this is where we get to some of the problems. The defense. The defense is a problem. And it really frustrates me. There are a lot of guys that have really good technique and that are really good defensively, but their body just isn’t built for it. Like their body is too small. For example, Reed Shepard is always trying and he has good defensive technique, but he is just small. Jay Nivey’s defense, it’s just very underwhelming. He has a really great build. Like his build is perfect to be an elite defender. He has great size, great athleticism. He has the wingspan. He’s got a 6’4 frame. He’s got a strong body, but his defensive technique is bad. Like go watch that Wizards game that they played earlier this season. Jordan Pool put him on skates like three times. He makes him very mid-read. Sometimes it’s really good, sometimes it’s really bad. Um the angles he takes when sliding with a defender sometimes just aren’t good. And when it comes to getting around screens, sometimes he’s really really good getting around screens, but then there’s other times where he’s really really bad getting around screens. If he can sit down in that chair next season and play better defense than what he has so far throughout his career, I’m going to feel so much better about him. I’m not saying that overall he’s a terrible defender. He’s just awful, but it’s extremely underwhelming for his size, his strength, his speed. A couple things that I do like, I think he takes really good angles whenever he’s trying to contest jump shots. Like, he’s not just going straight up in the air. Like, he’s like, I don’t even know how to explain it. And also, of course, he’s going to be really good in those passing lanes and those driving lanes with these long arms. And he also just covers ground so quickly, so he’s able to just scoop up passes that he’s not supposed to get. And then on the help side, I like that he tries and he tries to do stuff on the help side, but there are times where he overcommits on the help side and he leaves his man. as an onball defender. He was solid, there were times where he was really good, sometimes when he was really bad. Like I mentioned, like super inconsistent, I feel. Um, I do want to say though, with the Pistons defense being so good this year, and it’s just going to keep getting better with the guys that they have on the team, whenever he’s playing in this defensive lineup with three or four other people that really play good defense, it’s going to make him a better defender. One thing I do want to mention though is if the defense is bad next season, like if it’s really bad, the contract that he would get, it’s going to go from here to here and his value is going to go from here to here. You know, that’s how you end up being undervalued in the market. and then you get a small contract to end up being the sixman somewhere. That’s not what we want for Jay Na’vi. He is a starter. He is a real starter. We’re talking about the guy who just averaged like 18 points a game last season. He’s a real starter. I’ve seen people talking about like him just as a six-man. Like he’s just a six-man. Y’all realize he averaged 18 points a game last season? Like yeah, you could say that because his defense isn’t that good, but overall it’s hard to have a 18 points per game score off the bench. Could he end up in that six-man role if the defense never comes around? If he gets a small contract and gets undervalued, absolutely he could end up in that six-man role. But again, we’re talking about a guy that just averaged like 18,4 and five. Oh, and that five 184 and four. And I want to talk about those rebounds for a second. I felt like for his size, he’s a really good rebounder. And I do like that he crashes the offensive glasses a lot. He was getting 1.3 offensive rebounds per game last season and 2.8 defensive rebounds for a total of 4.1 rebounds. Okay, just a few miscellaneous things I want to run through real quick. He works really well off of the curl in the half court offense. just in general, like I mentioned earlier, really good offball player, coming around screens or just whatever it is, he’s good off the ball. The second thing is with the Pistons being so good this year and him not playing most of the season has him just so underrated, I feel. And the very last thing is, like I mentioned earlier, this is a contract year, which means this is a show me year. If he underperforms this next season, then I’m going to be really, really sad. And that’s all I had to talk about for Jaden Ivy. Um, I’m sorry I was a day late with the video. I was really burnt out, so I just needed an extra day to just, you know, get everything under control. From here on out, for the next like month or so, we’re doing just summer league. I’ve got like six guys that I want to talk about for the summer league. I I’ll give y’all two names just as a little sneak peek. Jace Richardson, Bronny James. And I don’t like to be that guy. Like, y’all know this about me. If you go look at the last videos I made for the last 6 months, I talk about people that people don’t like to talk about or people that are underrated or underappreciated. Everybody talks about Bronny James, but I feel like I want to talk about him, too. Now, the very last segment of the day, the very best segment of the day, my favorite segment of the day is the comment of the day. Um, if you don’t know what the comment of the day is, is my favorite comment from the previous video. It could be about anything. I don’t care what it is. It’s my favorite comment. Now, today, this isn’t actually a regular comment of the day. This is not from the previous video at all. And these are actually two comments. And both of these comments are from a while ago. I’m not butchering any names. I’m just going to put them up on the screen. You’re going to see them. Um, it was these two kind gentlemen asking for the Jaden Ivy video 3 weeks ago and a month ago. It took me a little bit of time, but I got it out for y’all. So, I do really appreciate you two guys. Um, y’all are the reason that he was in my notes and why he was in the consideration for me, you know, making this next video on him. But, like I mentioned, from here for a little while on, for the next like month or so, we’re just going to be talking summer league probably cuz I just I’m running out of people to talk about. Like, I there’s no more rookies that I really want to talk about that I feel like are really really good. And I don’t want to do any more NCAA stuff because I don’t want to get copyrighted. So, yeah. If you made it to the end of the episode, make sure to hit the like, the comment, the sub, the post notifications if you want. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. You got free will. But I would appreciate if you did any of them. I’m sorry if this isn’t my best video. Like I said, this week I was very burnt out. I was struggling to focus and actually get work done for this video. But I’m going to be coming back at y’all with some heat because I’m really excited to make these summer league videos. But yeah, I’mma see you on the next video, man. Peace out.
Today we talk about Pistons Guard Jaden Ivey! I cover things from his playmaking, shooting, slashing, defense, and more!

Loved Ivey coming out of college. Rooting for him to bounce back.
Right on time for my lunch i appreciate you
his east-west movement looked insane in the clips that you were playing. I am trying to picture how their playoff run would have looked different with Ivey available. take care of yourself.
Back to back bangers bro keep it up 💪🏽
are you gonna make a vid about summer league
PISTONS VS KNICKS WAS SUCH A FIRE SERIES💯🔥🔥🔥
jase richardson gonna be a banger i already know (not biased but im biased)
Ivey mip 21-5-6 on 46/40/88
Keep ts up fire analysis
Excellent analysis. Very fair. Very unlike some of the haters.
You’d be surprised how many dumbass young pistons fans that think ivey is a bust. It’s wild. As long as he continues to shoot the 3 around 40% again this year he’s going to be perfect for the Pistons starting 5 next year. Cade, Ivey, Ausar, Harris, Duren. Can’t wait to see Cade Ivey and Ausar play a bunch finally next season.
Monty set Ivey a year back unfortunately. He fucking started Killian Hayes and had Ivey coming off the Bench. What a joke.
Nawl he didnt get Injured in a freak accident. Suggs and Cole were intentionally trying to injure people all season. Suggs dove into both of Cade legs
Cunningham and Ivy backcourt is gonna be so elite in the years to come.
As a long-suffering Detroit Pistons fan, I hope Ivey is underrated… He has the tools, the attitude, and the work ethic…
But there are so many question marks, none of which were his fault…
Between the lost season under the horrible Monty Williams and the ill-timed injury last year, we don't know if Ivey is a short-term stop-gap at the off guard position, or the long-term solution to a deep playoff run or 2 and sustained competitive basketball…
Hoping…
JI is our iso guy who can go get a bucket. Its why he had the ball in his hands for those game winning shots
