Sacramento KANGZ Show Up in Summer League Title Game | Locked On Kings

bro. Like, who even cares about the summer league, right? Like, it’s it’s meaningless. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t mean anything like, “Oh, sure. They put it in Las Vegas to make it seem cool.” Like, it’s just recreational, semi-professional basketball, right? Enjoy your plastic rings, Charlotte Hornets. Go out and party on a Sunday night in Vegas when only old people are out playing slots. Who even cares? Like, the Sacramento Kings didn’t even really want to win the summer league title. Like, who wants to repeat the summer league? It doesn’t even matter. Nobody even cares. You are Locked on Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is that time. Time for another episode of Locked on Kings. Hello and welcome into Locked On Kings, your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all off season and yes all summer league long. Today’s episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use code locked on [email protected] for 50% off of your first year. My name is Matt George. I have the privilege of being your host here. I’m a Sacramento sports anchor and reporter at ABC10 News. Then yes, I’m the guy that uh talked about and broke down every single Kings summer league game over the last couple weeks. Truth be told, it was fun, right? It was a fun time. Summer League is always a great time. I hope everybody understands the the the sore loser joke that I was making there in the introduction. A fun, hardfought summer league title game. Congratulations to the Charlotte Hornets. They beat the Kings 83 to 78 in a game where the Kings could not help but show up. Right. It’s a big game. Something somewhat is on the line in summer league. Of course, that game had to end in some sort of Kang’s fashion. It doesn’t matter who you are. It doesn’t matter how much of time you spent uh on the Kings roster or playing uh in the summer league or in the GLeague or fresh out of college. Doesn’t matter. You put on a Kings jersey, you are doomed to have some sort of Kangs moment. And of course, we got that in the championship game. First and foremost, the most Kang’s thing that Sacramento did in this game was fall behind by 18 points early on. Now, credit to Sacramento. They did a fantastic job fighting back, battling back. Did so a little bit in the second quarter. Charlotte pulled away and once again had a double- digit lead in the third quarter. Then the Sacramento Kings roar all the way back. really had a chance to to steal this championship uh in Las Vegas, but weren’t able to close it out. Nick Clifford put in a tough spot. Devin Carter is is hit hard on a very legal screen. Unfortunately, falls to the floor. The roller, the screener then rolls to the basket, putting Neat Clifford in a difficult situation. Do you cut off the roller or do you stay out on your man who of course was Coniple, the fourth, I believe, overall pick in the draft who was the best shooter and one of the best players on the floor. Certainly the best player on the Charlotte Hornets and Meek decides to go on the roller. Gives way too much space to Caniple. He hits the wide open three to take a four-point lead. But that’s not what cost the Sacramento Kings cuz on the uh the other end of the floor, Isaac Jones, who had another fantastic game despite a slow start. We’ll talk more about him later. He knocks down a monster three-pointer to once again cut it back down to a one-point game. There’s like 20 seconds left. The Kings have to play the foul game. They send Coniple to the line. He miss makes the first free throw to make a two-point game. Misses the second free throw. Nick, I guess, was just playing the ball too shallow. Never really went for the rebound. Expected somebody else to get it, I guess. So, it’s a mistake on Nick’s part. He doesn’t go up to get the rebound. And then, like, Dayquin Plowen, before I talk about anything with this play with Dayquin, I will say Dayon Plowen hit a couple of big shots and played some phenomenal defense on the perimeter for the Kings down the stretch. But unfortunately, all he’s going to be remembered for during this summer league is being the the the leader of the Kangs moment because whether he was pushed in the back or not, Daquin Plouden falls onto his stomach and just lays there, right? Like I I I wish I could show you the clip, but I can’t because of uh copyright purposes, but you can go on to my Twitter account Matt George Sack and you can watch this play. I posted it there. Like it’s it’s it’s funny, but it’s not funny because it cost the Kings the game and it was a huge mistake because all you have to do there is secure the freaking rebound and give yourself a chance to tie the game with a two or or or hit a game winner. I think the Kings had a timeout at the time. All you have to do is secure possession and Plowden just falls to the floor and I guess he just died or he passed out. He fell asleep. He just stays there, right? And it was only for like a second and a half or two seconds. Not that like a massive thing, but he’s just laying there and the ball is loose, hits his foot, then rolls and hits Isaac Jones’s foot, goes out of bounds off the Kings. The Hornets retain possession. They the Kings have to foul him again. It becomes a four-point game. The game is basically over at that point. Can the Kings just lose normally? Right? Like, okay, you secure the rebound, then you try for a game-winning three, you miss it. Oh, darn. What a great game. Nope. The freaking Kangs had to show up. Daquin Plowen had to just die on in on the court. Had to just fall over and go limp. Like my son when I tell him to go to bed, he just kind of go like a limp fish just kind of dies. The ball goes off of his foot. Then Isaac Jones’s foot. It’s I mean it’s just something that we’re all too familiar with here in Sacramento. And it’s it’s funny. Like it’s it’s again it’s the summer league. It’s not that big of a deal. We I was very invested in this game. Like I’m I’m here at the ABC10 studios. I’m like standing up watching this game like stressed out when the Kings are making that comeback. Like this is a meaningful playoff game or championship game in real life. Look, we of course we wanted the Kings to win this game. Yes, it’s a summer league title, but it meant a lot to those guys and it’s the closest thing to a championship the Kings are going to get anytime soon if we’re being completely honest with ourselves. Not the Stockton Kings. They’re of course the reigning G-League champions, but closest thing the Sacramento Kings are going to get to a title uh in the near future. Unfortunately, they were not able to get it done. And and this was a unfortunate game to have both of your rookies, Maxim Reno and Nick Clifford, have their worst games of summer league. I think both of them absolutely had their worst games. We’ll start with Nick Clifford. 10 points, four of 15 shooting from the field, eight rebounds, two assists, had four fouls, turned the ball over three times. He was in foul trouble again, right? And the foul trouble again impacted his involvement in the first quarter. He actually scored the first two buckets of the game for the Kings. So, four of his 10 points were in the first like 30 to 40 seconds. But, he got into foul trouble and offensively really didn’t get anything going in the middle quarters. in the fourth quarter. Hit a couple of big shots. Hit a big three. Had a three that was changed to a two. A ridiculous like baseline or not baseline, sideline like pull-up jumper. I think it was the right call. It was a two. His foot was on the line. Just a ridiculously tough shot that he hit. Forced a couple of floaters down the stretch that I guess you kind of have to live with. Like it’s a good learning moment for a rookie. I’m 100% okay with him taking those shots. The only argument I guess would be like, could you try have gotten the the ball to Isaac Jones a little bit more? He was the best player all playoffs, quote unquote playoffs long in the summer league for Sacramento. The last two days, Isaac Jones has just been fantastic. Again, we’ll talk about him more in a little bit, but I’m I’m okay with Nick taking those shots. They were forced. They weren’t great shots. They weren’t great possessions, but it’s a good learning moment and learning opportunity for the Sacramento Kings first round pick. two games in a row where Nick got into foul trouble. And again, in the in in the summer league playoffs, it goes to regular NBA rules in terms of fouls. In the regular summer league, you have, I think, 10 fouls. So, you can just foul all the time and and who cares? But in the playoffs, in the summer league playoffs, they revert it back to the six fouls like in the NBA. And in both these games, Nick Clifford gets into foul trouble. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how Neique can work specifically with Doug Christie on that because I’ve watched Doug as a Kings assistant coach over the last few years work directly with players on their on ball defense, how to defend without fouling, uh horizontal quickness, right? putting uh having your hands be in the right positions, being physical without again fouling or swiping or reaching or anything like that. I’ve even watched Doug Christie as a head coach do that with guys like Zack Lavine. Caught it on video a couple times at Kings practices last season. So Doug Christie already seems like an ideal coach for Nick Clifford’s type of player because there are a lot of similarities in Nick Clifford’s game uh and and Doug Christiey’s game. But I hope we get the opportunity to see Doug and Nick directly working with each other on Nak’s on ball defense because while he’s not going to have as big of a role with the Sacramento Kings this upcoming season as he had in summer league of course he’s going to struggle staying on the floor defensively if he can’t defend without fouling. So that’s something that he clearly needs to work on and I’m excited to see Doug Christie work on him with that. Then you have Maxim Reno who also had his worst game of summer league in my opinion. Nine points, four of 11 from the field, seven rebounds, one steal, two blocks. Like I’ve been talking about this with Max since the since game one. The skill is obvious, especially offensively, right? He moves really well off the ball. He’s got good passing skills. Of course, his ability to space the floor, knock down the outside shot, that’s all there. That’s great. That is NBA ready. the dude is not physical enough. Like the physicality of the NBA is going to be a wakeup call for him and whether like he he just is not enough of a presence in the paint on both ends, but especially defensively, right? Whether it’s not being physical enough to battle for rebounds or be in the right position to fight for a rebound or truly protecting the rim and trying to block a shot, not just sticking your hands up, but trying to block a shot or cut off a lane to the rim or being aggressive, being a presence like the Charlotte Hornets had no fear attacking Maxim Reno in this game with him in the paint. They didn’t. They got downhill. Now they were getting they were cooking the Kings on the perimeter. The Kings perimeter defense in this game, especially in that first quarter, was dreadful and all too familiar to us Sacramento Kings fans. But Maxim Marino all summer long struggled being a defensive presence in the paint. And then even offensively, there were a couple of shots that he missed in the fourth quarter that were off the pick and roll that he just rushed or he was bumped in the paint that he couldn’t convert that the Kings needed him to convert down the stretch. I’m not saying all this to overreact to it, right? It’s good that we have a clear and obvious area that Maxim needs to work on. Like he’s a second round pick for a reason. Am I concerned about it? No, I’m not. I think like this is just naturally going just like Nick’s going to have to learn how to defend without fouling and the speed of the NBA game and how to find his shots and not force things offensively. Maxine’s just going to need to develop as a physical big like the the physicality of the NBA game is going to be a wakeup call for him. Like I’m thinking I’m thinking to training camp and I’m thinking, okay, he’s a big fan of of Demand Sabonis. He and Sabonis are going to get to work together a lot. I hope in practice and during training camp, Demand Sabonis and Maxim Reno are are guarding each other, right? We’ll see these when they when they do scrimmages and their five on five drills and typically you’ll have the five starters playing the five bench players. I hope it’s Maxim Reno as the backup center and not Drew Eubanks right away. Right. I want Maxim to try to defensively handle Damontis Sabonis because Dom is going to beat him up. Right. Dom is a physical beast of a player. We know this. We know Domas does not shy away from physicality and Domas while shorter than Maxim is going to go right into Maxim’s chest is going to try and bully him and push him around on the block and he’s not going to do that with any sort of ill intent. Like I think that’s what Max needs in order to learn to develop. Of course he’s going to hit the weight room work with the Kings strength and conditioning coaching staff on that too. So I’m not concerned by any means with Maxim right now. The physicality is the biggest thing that stands out for him. He just has to get more comfortable with the physicality on both ends of the floor if he wants to be a cons a consistent rotational piece not just in Sacramento but in the NBA as a seven foot one player period. But there were some bright spots in this game. I already hinted at how good of a game Isaac Jones had. Do want to talk about Devin Carter because once again he’s controversial. A lot of people hating on his game, but the Kings would have been blown out without Devin Carter in this game. Plus, we’ll look at Kings summer league as a whole. That’s all still to come here on Locked on Kings. Like I said at the top of the show, this episode of the Locked on Kings podcast is brought to you by Monarch Money. If you had asked me like 48 hours ago who was the standout performer and best story for the Sacramento Kings in summer league, it would have been Nick Clifford. No ifs, ands, or buts about it, and it wouldn’t have been close. But the way Isaac Jones stepped up over these last two days in these summer league playoff games has been phenomenal. And before that, it’s not like Isaac Jones was terrible or a non-factor in summer league before that. He was solid all summer league long. He just really exploded. And the Kings obviously leaned very heavy on him in these important big moment games in summer league. games where you were probably expecting to lean on maybe Devin Carter a little bit more as last year’s lottery pick or even Mason Jones as the G-League uh finals MVP and the most experienced guy on that court for the Kings summer league team. Nope, it wasn’t them. It was Isaac Jones who fought his way from two-way contract to full contract with the Sacramento Kings last season. He and Meek are neck andneck if we want to rank them in terms of story, but Isaac Jones fantastic once again in this game. 24 points, 10 of 17 from the field, 11 rebounds, two assists. Again, he had that monster three-pointer. He’s talked a lot about that three-point shot being one of the main things he’s working on, especially that corner three to help with spacing so he can fit in Sacramento’s offense. He hit he hit a couple of big threes uh over the course of these summer league playoffs. Uh like when I’m talking about Maxim Reno’s physicality, like look at the way Maxim Reno plays and look at the way Isaac Jones plays. Now, Isaac Jones, completely different build, different body type, a a much bigger, more physical player, but the way Isaac handles and reacts or even doesn’t react to contact right there. Whether it was the Charlotte Hornets or the Toronto Raptors, guys kind of whacking him and trying to push him off the block and get him off of his spots and he was just fighting through it, right? When you watch Isaac Jones play and you watch Maxim Reno play, you can see the drastic difference between the two of them, right? Isaac, his his physicality in these games was fantastic. And I talked about this after uh yesterday’s game and the semi-final game that like Isaac Jones is somebody that Doug Christie is going to have on his bench that he can point to and go, “Give me important minutes. Like, I kind of know where who you are.” Uh, I talked about him kind of potentially being like an Aaron Gordon type for the Sacramento Kings and in terms of like the role and the impact that he has on the Kings when he’s on the floor, but I I said like I don’t I don’t know right now how confident I would feel in like saying, “Oh, Isaac Jones is going to be a part of the Sacramento Kings rotation right away.” Back-to-back games like this, again, you don’t win roster spots in summer league. He’s going to have to carry this into and continue to play well through training camp and into preseason. But you best believe Isaac Jones has a very, very legitimate case for being part of Doug Christiey’s rotation on opening night. Absolutely he does. If he continues to play this way, if he specifically can carve out his role with the Kings, right? if if what he has been in summer league and I’m not talking about the numbers because the volume of opportunity and the minutes in summer league he’s not going to get that at the NBA level but if the type of player the way he plays the impact that he has when he’s on the floor if that can carry into training camp and on this main roster absolutely I could see him break into Doug Christiey’s rotation maybe even be the the ninth guy in Doug Christiey’s nine man rotation maybe putting Maxim Reno on the back seat right away or or replacing Drew Eubanks and just going small. I don’t know, but he 100% has a case. He was awesome awesome in summer league and I really appreciate him for that. Now, let’s talk about Devin Carter. Again, a lot of you are going to look at Devin Carter’s game and I I was interacting with it on social media the entire game. Like Devin Carter’s name is actually like trending in on social media in Sacramento right now. If you click on his name, man, it’s like overwhelmingly negative. Devin Carter, 13 points, five of 16 from the field, two of 10 from three-point range, seven assists, one turnover. Once again, a bad shooting game for Devin Carter with the exception of like his 30point explosion in game two. I think that was, he didn’t shoot the ball well. The Kings as a whole shot the ball terribly in this game. Like I don’t even know if they were 20% or like hovering around 20%. The Kings as a team did not shoot the ball well, but Devin Carter shot the ball more than anybody from three-point range and he shot 20%. I do understand the frustrations with Devin missing open looks because the Charlotte Hornets quite frankly were daring Devin to shoot and it worked very well for them. Right. Okay, go ahead and beat us from the perimeter, Devin Carter. We’ll we’ll take it. And I know people don’t like his jump shot. I understand why. It looks clunky. It looks ugly. It’s way too slow for a 61 6’2 guard. That’s something that he definitely needs to work on. But I will say this cuz the the somehow I’ve become captain defended Devin Carter when if you go back to podcasts a month, two months, three months ago, I was very clearly not a believer and a fan of Devin Carter. The the negativity about Devin is overblown. when Devin played better than Nick. Devin played better than Maxim. Devin played better than almost everybody on this roster not named Isaac Jones. And of course, we’re not going to crap on Nick and Maxim, right? Because they’re they’re rookies and they’re brand new and Deon’s in his second year. Except Deon’s only played 30 something games and never had a training camp in a summer league to begin with either. So, he’s already behind the eightball. But I understand again there’s negative feelings towards Devin Carter that more have to do with the organization and the past front office regime than Devin Carter himself. I laid this out on an early episode or an earlier episode of Locked on Kings podcast like one or two episodes ago earlier in the week. You can go and check that out if you want to hear my full thoughts on that. But let me be very clear like the the reason why the Kings were able to come back into this game in the second quarter was because of Devin Carter. Isaac Jones did not get off to a good start in this game. Devin Carter kept shooting and fought back to get the Kings back. His his for the most part he made the right decisions handling the basketball. Seven assists. I think his passing in transition is really underrated. Only one turnover. Again, he’s doing a good job taking care of the basketball even if he doesn’t look really comfortable dribbling the basketball. and he took on in the first half when Kppo got going early, he switched on and took on a lot of the defensive responsibilities on KPO, especially with Nick Clifford in foul trouble. So like Devin Carter didn’t have nearly as bad of a game as people are making it out to be. Was he good to great? No, of course he wasn’t. But he’s not the reason why the Sacramento Kings lost. And as much as you might go, dude, you’re two of 10 from three. Stop shooting. Stop shooting. If it’s a wideopen three that your offense is naturally generating, the Kings want him to shoot that shot every single time. In fact, he’d get in more trouble passing that shot up than letting the than uh letting it fly. Like you want to see him, even when he’s struggling, put that shot up with confidence. And he continued to do so. And I think that he deserves credit for that. Of course, more often than not, you’re going to need it to go in. And I’m not saying that the way he played over this summer league makes me say, “Yep, he’s ready for the backup point guard position in Sacramento.” In fact, I think the takeaway should be for Scott Perry and the Sacramento Kings that there is still not a backup point guard on this roster right now. And they might have to find a way to address that using the MLE before training camp begins. That’s probably how they’re feeling right now. And I don’t necessarily blame them. And if Devin Carter is not going to be the backup point guard here in Sacramento, he probably doesn’t have a fit or a spot or a role here in Sacramento. That might be the harsh reality of the situation, but that doesn’t change the fact that he had good moments in summer league. And he’s not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. And if I have to be the only one to die on the hill to defend Devin Carter so he doesn’t get this venom that I’m seeing, I I will happily do that. Overall, if I were giving him like a summerly grade, it would be a C+. He had good moments, had good games, wasn’t as impressive as I was hoping he would be as kind of a secondyear player with the Kings, but his circumstances are very strange from his injuries last season to learning a new position. No one’s going to feel bad for him. He doesn’t feel bad for himself. He’s embracing the challenge and if it works out, great. If it doesn’t work out, great or bummer. It looks like it’s more not working out in what the Sacramento Kings are hoping for from him, but it’s not a foregone conclusion. We’ll see if he’s on the roster come training camp time, what it looks like and what Doug Christie decides to do. So, final thoughts and overall takeaways from Sacramento Kings summer league. First and foremost, I like this team a lot. like for a team that was only together for a week and some change for training camp or summer league training camp to then go undefeated, make it all the way to the championship game and do so off of the effort and intensity and hustle that they play with on the defensive end. Like every single time the Kings went on a run or had their best moments in summer league in all these games, it was starting on the defensive end, right? As a as a whole, I I think this team was great. I think Depesh uh the the summer league head coach did a really really good job with this group. They should be very proud of themselves and how well they played. They were very entertaining. I think a lot of them if they don’t get looks from Sacramento in terms of training camp invites or the Stockton Kings, they’re going to get looks around the league or the G-League somewhere. A lot of good talent on this roster and a lot of good dudes from from what I understand and what I’ve heard about this group. Uh Nick Clifford NBA ready. Certainly has things that he needs to work on. is not a like an NBA star right away or anything like that, but he’s NBA ready. He’s an NBA caliber player. That’s been made very clear over summer league. Maxim Reno has NBA skills on the offensive end. The physicality of the game, something he needs to work on. But the fact that that’s laid out and that’s clear and he knows that as well as the Sacramento Kings means they can attack that not at training camp, not in preseason. They’re going to start working on that as soon as he gets back to Sacramento, right? And Maxim again is the guy that came to Sacramento after he was drafted and right away was working out twice a day in the Kings practice facility. So you best believe he’s going to put in the work. So I’m I’m encouraged by that. Again, Isaac Jones, incredibly impressive. Dylan Cardwell had some awesome moments on defense. Even took an elbow to the chops today and got back up and still played very physical. I’m excited about him as a two-way player. way more positives than negatives with this summer league team. This was a fun summer league. It certainly helped with content. It helped us get kill the time. Now we’re going into the true dead period of the NBA off season, right? Where we’re anxiously going to be seeing what the Kings decide to do if they’re making any more moves in free agency and using the MLE and we can’t wait for the schedule to drop. And other than that, there’s a whole lot of nothing until training camp begins. So, I appreciate this summer league team for for taking us on a a fun ride over the last week or two in Las Vegas. Uh, and uh, a lot of those guys deserve a ton of credit. Now, I want to hear from you. Your thoughts on this game, your thoughts on this summer league team, what stood out the most to you? If you want to talk about Devin Carter’s struggles or Nick Clifford, Maxim Reno, Isaac Jones, whoever you want to talk about, hit me up on Twitter, email me matte [email protected], and leave your thoughts in the YouTube comment section down below. I’ve really enjoyed the frequency of the Locked On podcast picking back up over the past couple of weeks, and I’m going to try and keep that frequency up as much as possible. Like I said, we’re going into a bit of a a bit of a dead period contentwise, but I’m still planning on having guests on the show, different topics still to cover as training camp gets closer. I still Yes. And some of you are probably yelling at me or rolling your eyes at this. I still want to do the the the fansonly podcast that I talked about at the end of last season. I still have all of you that I chatted with and got your emails and stuff. I still plan on doing it. So, keep an eye out for that. Even my wife, who is a clueless Sacramento Kings fan, says she wants to be on the podcast and wants me just to ask her Kings questions. So, if that’s something that you think would be a fun episode as we kill the time, I I’d be happy to do that, too, if uh if you’d be interested in that. But appreciate all of you who’ve uh ridden with me throughout this summer league time, and I hope you stick around for training camp and beyond. Until next time, my name is Matt George. 1. Hopefully the kings win games this season. Sure there’s gonna be losses but hopefully, enough wins to get to the playoffs.

  2. Huge mistake in a crucial moment? That's Kangs Basketball. We can still bask in the fading glow of the last Sacramento Kings Championship. If you were alive 74 years ago. Oh snap, that's when they were the Rochester Royals not the Sacramento kings. Never mind. We suck.

  3. Devin is a really bad player. I dont see him in the NBA in the next year! Horrible pick by a rookie GM and a bad hire from an incompetent owner!

  4. I felt like Plowden was the only guy doing his job. He boxed his guy out. Why didn't Nique just grab the ball. It just looked like a lack of intensity from both Issac and Nique if anything.

Also, how did no one call out that screen for Devin. He was completely blindsided and once he went down it was 4 on 5 and we were pretty much cooked.

It's good these things happen in summer league so we can clean them up for games that mattter.

  5. It's the fking summer league! At least they made it to the finals. Nothing will make any of you happy. If they won, you'd say "well I wish they could do this in the regular season."

  6. Once again the kings suck on the teat or the Knueppel of defeat if you will. The summer league roster fit in with the kings tho, they lost a lead every game and choked in the big game…. Kangz like a mf lmao 😂

  7. Kudos to Matt for pointing out the obvious; Carter criticism is way overblown. Carter was by far best player for Kings in 1st half on both sides of ball with 10 points on 50% shooting, 5 assists, 1 block, 0 turnovers and played the best D of any King.

2nd half couldn’t make shots (like the rest of the team) but still played well. Entire team played well 2nd half just couldn’t make shots; Kings had best three-point percentage for 1st three games in the pavilion, which is much smaller but 3pt shooting really went down the toilet once they started playing in the much bigger Thomas and Mack Center which didn’t have as many fans towards the end of summer league and so your depth perception might be thrown off.

  8. Devin Carter is so bad! There is not 1 thing he does that gives me any confidence that he should be in the NBA. I couldn’t believe HE was the best player in the lottery. So, please don’t defend him. He’s the son of an NBA vet who’s had every advantage. Ugh 😣
