The Weirdest Roster Ever Built Around Giannis Antetokounmpo
In one of the more bizarre moves of the off seasonason, the Milwaukee Bucks waved Damen Lillard after his Achilles injury, using that as leverage to sign Miles Turner. The Bucks have been a team that has gone from championship level contending into middle of the pack last season. They have a roster where I’m like, “Sure, I guess.” And I think just right off the bat, they have no legitimate secondary guy. I see the vision of what they could become. You have Giannis, who is the best rim pressure guy in the league in transition, off screens, one-on-one, just tremendous strength on the way to the rim, different gallers to slide by the defense, can get shots off through heavy traffic, strong hands with added growth as a capable mid-range shooter. And then the man is legitimately one of the most improved great passers over the years as a driving kicker, wrapping passes around and beaming long passes to the open guy. For years, he has been that, hey, Giannis is really good, right? But not good enough for MVP. He always lurked around that third spot. But Giannis is just a consistent source of offense with the ball in his hands. I really don’t worry about him. He’s a legitimate superstar. Miles Turner, if you were going to move on from Brook Lopez, was the best type of big to payer next to Giannis. Lopez was getting older and the Bucks need to invest in someone younger who can give better production at that center spot. Turner stretches the floor which forces opposing centers to have to guard him and not crowd the paint. Turner is a 15 points per game guy who shot near 40% on close to six three-pointers a game. And that range he gives to where he can be a pick and popper spot up above the break makes him a threat along the perimeter. What has been a positive development in Turner’s game is being able to attack mismatches. Oftent times defenses would switch. Not believing much in Turner’s attack, but he has become a threat who can take smaller guards in the post, seal them, and create shots inside for himself. He’s also a threat in the short roll with that jumper. I do want to see more of that short roll passing be sharper from him, but he can also just take the ball and drive it inside and get a shot up. As a defender, Turner has always flown under the radar in that tier below all NBA defensive team, but he is a legitimate shot blocker, strong protecting the rim. There are moments where he just doesn’t give that resistance you need with zero urgency and just standing flatfooted as he sees a dude just get a layup inside going right by him. He is here and there defending in space. You do want him to kind of replicate the drop defense of a prime Brook Lopez at least, which he is capable of. Lopez was a better post defender and I feel Turner tanks in that area. I’ve always harped on the lack of consistent effort as a rebounder, but he is more of a team rebounder. I know that some people will say, well, you’re tall with a long wingspan, but there’s other factors that goes into rebounding. strength, leaping ability, tracking the ball on the way down, positioning, and how effective you are boxing out your own man. And then there’s other elements of, oh, your team’s just not boxing out their guys, so you kind of have to cover for them. So sometimes rebounding isn’t always your fault. It’s a team thing, but also being big does help, but it’s also a lot of stuff that goes into it. For bigs who are shot blockers, sometimes it’s tough to block a shot, then spring back off the ground and grab a board with a second jump. So, I get that. And Turner’s mission is kind of just box out and allow his guards to grab the boards, push offense quickly, which is the Pacers bread and butter. But then there are times where I think positionally and in traffic where when you really need him to challenge and grab a board, he does struggle and he can get moved out of position from stronger centers. He just doesn’t have great leaping ability or the sense of urgency to just challenge for rebounds in traffic. Even with those rebounding weaknesses, he plays with guys like Giannis and Portoris who can help Turner on the boards. Giannis especially where he can just push the pace off of that. Cole Anthony has been one of the more under the radar signins from the Bucks. I feel there’s a lot of things he can showcase better on the Bucks just from better spacing. There’s another gear he can get to as a shot creating guard who is capable getting to the rim of his handle, working in ball screens, getting to a mid-range jumper, or utilizing crafty footwork to score inside. He’s a score first dude. He has legitimate shot creation skills of creating space, utilizing ball screens to get into the paint and creating a shot. Has a floater in his game. he can get to solid finisher when he gets inside. His handle is solid, but he does struggle navigating against lengthy defenders with pressure, which goes into his playmaking ability. The playmaking does leave a lot to be desired from Cole Anthony. He doesn’t process the court really well, can have some bad tunnel vision at times, frequently missing windows to pass. He’s just geared more as a scorer, but he isn’t a highlevel score. What I’m worried about is that given his height and when pressured, he just doesn’t do well passing out and making those basic reads at a high level. He can be a bit jump shot reliant in the mid-range. And if those shots aren’t falling, it’s tough for him to score. Consistency is another issue he has. And and Cole Anthony shooting off the catch is really going to be a swing skill for him on the Bucks. He shot 34% on catch and shoot threes on low volume. And I really see this Bucks team just saying, Giannis, dude, go out, have an MVP year. You are the point guard for this team. We will space out the floor and put up a ton of threes while you attack the rim relentlessly. Cole has to be a bigger factor in that with more volume on threes off the catch. For his size, he is pretty active on the boards, which does help. Tremendous leaper as a 6’2 dude. Average three rebounds a game. hustle type of player who looks to push the pace in transition as much as possible. The Bucks also brought in Gary Harris in which I’m just like cool, I guess. I mean, sure. The shot has been pretty spotty from him for the past couple of years. Struggled with injuries. When healthy, he does serve as a three-point shooter who can provide additional perimeter defense. It’s just interesting cuz they do have AJ Green and Ryan Rollins that fills that mold. Ryan, who fills the three and D mode, who has on ball potential that can be tapped into more as well as a strong defender. Rollins stepped up whenever his name was called. One of the biggest bright spots for the Bucks last year. The Bucks lucked out of the Bo sweep stakes to the Clippers, which just side rant, I am ranting here. The Clippers from 2014 until now has had a crap ton of talent come in and out of that roster. Prime Chris Paul, prime Blake Griffin, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Lou Williams, Ivita Zubots, James Harding. Hell, they had Sheay Gilis Alexander at one point. Granted, he was a rookie. Norman Powell, Isaiah Hartenstein, Danielle Garland, Tobias Harris, JJ Reic, Jamal Crawford, old man Paul Pierce. This team has gotten a ton of talent left and right with balanced rosters, competitive rosters. Never got over the hump. Never got over the hump. The Lakers, the Lakers, who had an eh talent since 14 compared to the Clippers. LeBron and AD really came over and saved that franchise. But the Lakers have had poor rosters through that time span, but have at least one championship in that span. Now, I know injuries and such and whatever the case you want to throw out, but it’s just funny how the Clippers legitimately should have zero zero. This is the biggest team where they shouldn’t have zero excuses to get the thing done. And they just haven’t done it. It’s mindboggling to me. And even at this stage, this team has hardened. Granted, he’s older, but still damn great passer. Leonard Beal, Zubots, John Collins now with a nice bench. And I still feel like they won’t get over that hump. But you know what? It it is what it is. That’s a rant I just needed to get off my chest. Anyways, Kevin Porter Jr. is probably the most likely player to break out as the type of secondary dude on this Bucks team who can provide some downhill scoring and capable playmaking. Court processing ability, making timely passes, balanced with his scoring is going to be a swing skill of his with increased minutes. a mid-range threat. He can come off screens and get loose in the paint and get into his shots. Gary Trent is another guy who can fill that void of potential secondary type dude as a shooter and close out attacker. The Bucks have basically lived without Dame. So rolling out Giannis and the core guys of Porter Jr., Trent Jr., Prince upgrading the center spot could be something that they’re comfortable in doing because they have a track record of playing without a secondary dude. I think they are banking on, hey KPJ, Gary Trent, Kyle Kosma, Miles Turner, AJ Green, can we get multiple of y’all in double digits tonight? So, it’s kind of like this thing of anyone could be the second guy on any given night. And they really need to upgrade from Kyle Koozma. If this team somehow someway gets their hands on Trey Murphy, I would be elated. I would love this front office because that’s the type of guy that they need as a Ford. I like the front court can go from a spacer and turner at any moment to an athletic lob threat big in Jericho Sims. So that’s always a good thing to have. I do wonder how the Bucks structure their defense, what they will lean into because they have regressed a bit in the past few years defensively and they were inconsistent at times last year. Moments where they were ranked well and they just fell off. All in all, I don’t know how to feel about the Bucks. There’s a lot of potential breakout level talent, but there isn’t a sole guy beyond Giannis to comfortably take that role as a main secondary piece. I lean more into Kevin Porter Jr., but this is another thing where time will have to tell. That’ll wrap it up for this video. I want a 2018 bron run outta Giannis ik he can do it with this year’s east
Good video once again, but maybe I've misunderstood – what do you mean by 'hey Giannis is really good but not good enough for MVP, he's always lurked around that 3rd spot'? What about, you know, the two actual MVP awards he's got?
Giannis MVP with this roster😃
I think you hit the nail on the head. This is a roster designed to keep Giannis happy, not to compete.
Dame never got going at Milwaukee. He didn't want to be there, he struggled with injuries, he couldn't get his shot to fall consistently.
BUT when he and Giannis did share the court….it was clear they had no chemistry. Giannis made no attempt to change up his game to accommodate him. Instead of the killer PNR attack we all expected, we got 2 years of Giannis demanding the ball off Dame so he could bulldoze his way into the paint, or Giannis setting lethargic screens for him, if he bothered to set them at all.
Because when Giannis says he wants help….he doesn't want another star player to share the court with. He's not going to change the way he plays so another guy can shine. After all, it's made him an MVP and won him a chip. What he wants is another Holiday, another Middleton, another Lopez. Guys who can adapt their games to fit his when he's on the court, and can dial it up when he sits.
Giannis is going to be real happy with this team. He's going to be at the center of everything they do, and he's going to put up monster numbers. But he's not going to compete for a ring, unless the Bucks can find him two new versions of Jrue and Khris.
Idk how to feel about this roster. They had a losing record when dame wasn’t playing. I think they’ll be better tho
Giannis Antetokounmpo is monster,
But for me he same as Donovan Mitchell
Very good player but cannot elevate the team
Michael Jordan and Kobe have attitude like Giannis before they hire Phil Jackson and change their perspective,
Must share the ball to make teammates gain confidence and trust
Giannis miast learn that not just care about stat, how great you are it still team sport, need everyone became ONE
Great vid, I noticed that Myles would stop he offense on their first attempt but the pacers were so small that put backs would be incredibly easy. Giannis never really had a rim protector to help him like Giannis this can be a really exciting duo
I think the Bucks are trying to replicate what the Pacers did. High pace, fast energy basketball and try to beat teams by committee.
The one thing I didn't like about the Bucks last season was our inability to get to the paint apart from Giannis. Having guys like Rollins, KPJ, Cole Anthony will help with that issue and in turn generate more paint points and three point volume.
For one of the best shooting teams in the NBA, the Bucks didn't generate enough three point looks per game. We were 18th in the NBA for three point attempts per game, whilst being the most efficient team shooting the three. That is unacceptable.
Hopefully the faster pace of basketball, and the acquisition of more players who can get to the paint will solve this issue.
I'm confused on how the roster is werid if that surrounded Giannis with a more suited roster? The league is moving away from a bunch of star like players and proving good role players is the key. They dumped all their old slow players from this last season and got younger, faster and more athletic. The Bucks played their best basketball last season without Dame and Brook. Brought back all the players they were winning with. Sounds like they are better to me.
What’s crazy is this might be one of the best rosters built around Gianni’s lmao and it’s ass
GTJ will be the number 2 scorer KPJ will be the 3rd option….people act like they forgot both of them was 20 point scorers before they came here
I found your content through the weirdest weaknesses/strengths vids and I gotta say I’m becoming a fan, hope you grow more.
Small nitpick though, I feel like your music choice is a little weird, you switch from relatively upbeat music to the one Mike Korzemba used to use and I’m like “damn did shit get serious all of a sudden lol”
Also, bout the vid topic, this season could shape up to be an all-time run for Giannis considering how open the East is this year. I’m not confident it’ll happen since I’m pretty low on the Bucks’ roster but I wouldn’t be too surprised if, say, he made the ECF or something.
“Not good enough for MVP” is maybe the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard he very easily could’ve been given a 3rd MVP the last 4 years…voter fatigue existed early after the back to back and Jokic advanced offensive stats are unbelievable…but the easiest money you can win gambling this year is going to put your money on Giannis to win MVP as soon as possible…cause he’s going to win his 3rd this year
Mjf’s music is distracting me 😂
He will get more open shots playing with Giannis
his three-point percentage should rise
What about Mark Sears
I don't agree with any of the analysis you gave in this video. I think the Bucks roster is very well constructed with length, youth and athletic ability. They have creators in KPJ and Cole Anthony when GA doesn't have the ball in his hands. They have shooting at EVERY position. They have arguably the best front court in the league with GA, BP, MT, JS, KK. I think the Bucks are being underestimated going into the season. They will be a top 4 seed in the Eastern Conference.
I understand turner isn't a great individual rebounder and he more boxes out for his guards to get the ball, but lopez did the exact same thing only minus the box out
This roster fits Giannis perfectly.
This team reminds me of the 09 Magic roster..
They gona win more games then last year because dinosaur lopez and dame not there so there defense will be better and there offense probably too just a bit
Good video 👍
7:22 very bad take on the Lakers talent back then and their savior.
2017, the year before LeBron:
Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Kyle Kuzma, Alex Caruso, Zubac, KCP, Gary Payton Jr, Jordan Clarkson, all 25 or younger with 29 year old Brook Lopez. They would’ve been a top 3 roster in a couple years for many years if they just did nothing.
KPJ has the opportunity to become a star he was on pace to be
Not good enough to be mvp? Your talking about a former mvp, finals mvp and defensive player of the year? Wtf
FOR THE GIANNIS MVP LINE – I See people interpreting it as me saying Giannis is not a MVP player which doesn't make sense after I just praised his entire game.
The line was a dig at media/fans with how little praise or recognition Giannis gets in MVP talks for the past few years. Always put on the backburnwr. We all know he is an elite player but just seen how little of a case he gets every year for the race and it's just a massive Jokic storm when those talks come around
Weirdest as in worst lmfao. Outside of Turner, who's just fine, this roster is trash. But with Giannis anything is possible
Yeah if the bucks somehow got Trey Murphy I’d be thrilled. I think that could make the bucks more of a threat to the Magic, Cavs and Knicks. But I feel like that’s wishful thinking as a bucks fan.
What is more weird? The roster they build this year around Giannis or the donkey who still sits on their bench and ''calls the shots''?
If the Bucks win the chip we gotta have top 10 all time convos for Giannis
( 5:35 ) I wish, doc isn't smart enough for that haha
