Washington Wizards vs New York Knicks Full Game Qtr Jul 19 2025 | NBA 2K26 Summer League Today
this afternoon against Washington. We’ll give you the starting lineups with co vote champ Watson and Naji for the Knicks. The Washington Wizards will get to know as we play, including a last minute addition from another summer league roster. Yes. An opposing player who played last night is going to be part of the bench for JJ Outlaw and the Wizards here today. Our officials, Catherine Chang, Julian Scott, Rachel Raford with Randolph Childris, and Giana Hearn, who will chime in momentarily. I’m JB Long. Glad you’re with us for the summer league finale for Washington and New York. And the Wizards have the first possession. Dylan Jones dribbles over and hands off to Jonathan Pierre. 10inute quarters, fifth and final game. It’s a consolation match up between these two franchises. James Nashi has the first rebound. And here is Col. Holds, gives it back to his one on the roll. It’s stolen. The Wizards with a steal and Watkins had a disrupted run out. He gives it right back. I just wanted to say how Wat’s already showing you his defensive prowess getting his hands acted creating a steal even though he gives it back. These early games we talked about, you don’t know what you’re going to get early. Yeah, seven steel game the other night. Prior it was eight. I read eight initially. That must have been changed because as of this morning’s box score it was a seven steel performance. by the way, impressive with the hands defensively as KC who got off to an 0 for1 start in summer league from three misses here. Gilbert on the crossover take. Oh, he goes to the hook and follows his own. How about a third bite at the apple with Gak down deep. Pierre lines up a triple. There we go. We’re underway Saturday at Summer League. Gak going to the offensive glass there. Best time to get threes in particular is off offensive rebounds. Great job by the Wizards taking advantage of it. Champ looking opposite looking to the corner and they answer with a three from Anton Watson. Anton Watson spent a ton of time in the main Celtics GLeague. Knocks down his first shot. A gap brings the whistle on the crossover take. Get a look at JJ Outlaw Wizards assistant coach now 41 years of age. Love the story this week from Martenzi Johnson on the do side. Give that a Google search if you hadn’t caught it yet detailing his Hall of Fame. [Music] Great job by G coming down the paint, catching and finishing in traffic. He’s went right over to Australia to play pro basketball to help prepare him for this opportunity. As many of the guys have been re prone to do, the Australian league kind of operates their lead similar to the NBA style of play. And the miss from Cole. Knicks will keep it with 10 to shoot. One thing to watch, we talked about the Wizards in their bodies. They got more coaches over there on their bench right now than they have available players. So, let’s see if conditioning matters. I said another way, New York has a longer bench than Washington does a roster today. Bo. He threw his arms up as if he was surprised that it went in, but he’s been on such a heater. Shouldn’t be surprised at all. I think he was saying, “I knew I was going to make that, but I was wondering where the whistle was to go to foul.” Watkins back to Gilbert. Six to shoot as he steps into the lane. Pierre thought about three. Now pulls up for a long two. One and done for the Wizards. Watson will board it and bring it. We see with these guys again, you get shots. They’re turning down shots and taking some contested ones. Good take. Anton Watson, former second round pick of Boston back in 24. Jones cut off on that baseline to the slot. Watkins dared to fire and burries the three. Great sign. Just make the open threes job Watkins. We know he can defend. You see him pressuring the basketball there. He can defend every position on the floor. If he can consistently knock down that three ball, look out. Wizards have stolen found him a player. I mean, so much attention to Trey Johnson, who we also talked about. Will Riley also had a good showing here in the summer, but Watkins right there in that class. He is. I loved him a year ago watching him play at Florida State and again can defend anyone on the floor. Has the size and the athleticism you’re looking for in the NBA. And again, as he feel as he settles down and finds his role, again, could be a secondary ball handler as well. Kak shoots the gap. Watkins back defensively. Watson there for reinforcements. Euros for two. Watson’s giving you everything here. Knocking down a corner three. Couple of runners in the paint. Kean Gilbert using the gak screen here. In and out dribble driving a crease behind the back. Gak could handle it. Wizards keep it with Jones and he’s fouled going to the rim. Our first stoppage one-point game. When you’re struggling, one way to get you going here. Cota gets in the passing lane, drives it, lays it off to Anton Watkins. [Music] Ah, [Music] [Music] [Music] NBA 2K26 Summer League. The Knicks up by one point. And the Knicks secondyear guard, Tyler Kolic, well, he had a struggle to start summer league through four games. Kick had 18 turnovers and he was shooting just 17% from the three-point line. But his trainer came to defend him on X, actually. And even though the stats surprise many of the fans because Kick’s passing reputation has been impressive, his NBA trainer Chris Brickley, he responded saying that as a pass first guard, summer league is not equal to the real NBA, adding that the level of players around him isn’t what he’d face in the league. And Kick showed that he knows how to run an offense as a packup point guard. And so as he’s out here now trying to show off everything his it’s interesting to see his trainer coming to his defense saying even though what you’ve seen from summer league isn’t what you thought he still has the chops to be that backup point guard in New York. Oh thanks very much. There’s a lot to dig into there as he misses another three. Has to keep launching. Still can’t dial it in. I think he definitely has the chops. He’s as tough as they come. But one thing he can do is you can tell he’s standing straight up and he’s ready to to pass the ball a lot of times and he’s got to get ready. And couple of these shots he’s not ready to shoot. You know, he’s left open. So there’s no hesitation. She’s not taking bad shots. You just got to be more comfortable stepping in right now taking these shots. Campbell’s in the game. He launches a corner triple. Jaden Campbell. That’s what you want to see. No hesitation. Just catch it. The undrafted free agent from Sanford. He knows our only shot is to get buckets if I want to get an opportunity to look. So Jones just walking into a three here. Again, these guys, this is what you want to see. No hesitation. Just let it go. Walk into your shot. They’re open shots. A lot of times you see a couple of these guys Heat. [Music] Hey. Hey. Hey. [Music] [Music] [Music] go back to the point that you know Gian Range about this man here as he drains a two. How from your lens has playing the NBA point guard position changed since your days? I I it’s the hardest position in the league to adapt to. It really is. I think it has the most depth. You know, you go top to bottom, you listen. So, it’s really challenging. It’s difficult. So you’re coming off here, just no hesitation. The bottom, you listen. So it’s really challenging. It’s difficult. So you’re coming off here, just no hesitation there. Standing there, reads it, he pulls the trigger. I just think he’s got to come out and just be more decisive easier no matter who you’re playing with. Because what happens is, you know, anything I push back on from his his trainer is that better players make the game easier for him. Right now with these group of guys, his job is to make the game easier for everyone else, you know, with his skill set. And he’s talented enough to do that. I just think he’s just trying to pass and play with these guys. They need him to be aggressive right now and I think that’ll come, you know, the shots will fall, but right now he just looks a little tentative. That’s missing a couple of shots seem to bother him a little bit and this is a really good player and he’s tough enough and talented enough to be an NBA player. Randolph, there is an archetype for the NBA one right now, but there’s more than one way to get it done. Yes. Yes, it is. And he can get it done. He’s strong. He’s he handles the rock well. More importantly, he’s tough enough. You can’t speed him up, right? You know, right now you have Jamir Watkins on him, a big six, seven point guard. It doesn’t matter. He That won’t bother him. He just needs to be like this, very decisive in what he’s doing. He’s been dismal from three, but drops another two. And that’s what I mean, movement, catching that one on the run. He’s not flatfooted, letting the game just happen. He’s being more aggressive, more in attack mode. Offensively, shots will start falling for him. Yeah, now that he’s seen a few go, I wouldn’t be surprised if that three-point ball falls as well. And that’s just a hard position. It’s the hardest position in the NBA to play. Just the most depth and the most talent position in the NBA to play. Just the most depth and the most talent. What about the backup role? I mean, we know what starting ones look like as co. Well, I think the backup role is really hard, particularly when you’re a pass for first guy like him because tendencies to let the game come to you, but you still got to be aggressive to set up your teammates. Three-point game with 217 to go in our first frame. [Music] team and this team is built here is Mike Brown just sat next to us. I think he’s he’s coming in here to win a championship and I came in here to listen to you. He wanted to be with an ear shot. No, that’s my guy. I used to train his son back in when we were a lot younger. He used to work me out during my playing days. Dylan Jones shooting foul shots there. Drafted by the Wizards. His righties Dylan Jones shooting foul shots there. Drafted by the Wizards. His rights traded to New York for Keshan George. And then the Knicks flipped him to OKC for some future depth chart as they possess here down 216 against the Wizards. And that is Jordan Clarkson and what he brings to the second wave and bench scoring. I think it just that’s the key to adding him. I think he’s a sneaky underrated and you know guy that’s been added to a roster because he’s known for that. Watson is known for his ability to come off a bucket getter off the bench and that’s part of what happened with the Knicks when Jaylen Brunson was out of the game. They struggled at times offensively. They got a guy that’s going to change that. Dick P from three shooting at 46% from behind the arc this week in Las Vegas. He’s done well for himself. Made himself some money. Jday Grant doing work defensively. Single digits on the timer now. Robins looking for help. Rain Smith into the game for the first time. He was wearing different colors last night. Had a big three-point shooting night for Denver. He’s shooting it. He ain’t thinking about it. He knows why he’s out there. Every time it touches his hand is one max one or two dribbles and it is going up. This is just a pickup game for him. He’s got 10 fouls to give and perhaps as many as 13 three-point attempts. That’s what he did last night for Denver in 26 minutes, scoring 17 points. And as we mentioned off the top, Washington wrapping it up for eight different Wizards. And so they’re short-handed in this finale. Jamir Watkins at the strike. 24y old who played his college basketball at Florida State. Want free fan perks? That’s a win with NBA ID. He starts He’s getting him up. Make no mistake. Cold, hot, doesn’t matter. He’s getting him up. I He’s going to get up at least 10 to 15 threes here. You could say the same for P. He’s like I said, he’s on a heater. He’s making shots and looks comfortable doing so. Still only 19 years of age. How about that? Tied at 22 apiece in our final minute of the first. Robins hands off. Smith lets it go. Lefty off the heel. He’s over for three. Jones using the shot fake to get downhill. Ray Smith is going to be playing like this even when he’s 40, 50 years old playing pickup. just being able to shoot it like that. He’s turning the pavilion into his own YMCA, isn’t he? He doesn’t matter. He doesn’t know the plays. He doesn’t know the calls. He’s just moving around and getting up shots. He’s not overthinking it, that’s for sure. O Champ really making that screen work. Dishes to Grants. Aday Grant off the mark. 20 seconds to go. Shot clock turned off. Dylan Jones with the basketball. He scored eight points for the Wizards in this opening session. We’re talking though. It’s it’s the defensive end of the floor. If you want to impress teams and you want to make a roster, you’ve got to guard and Robins has nowhere to go. And well defended by the Knicks in that final possession. Good defense there. This week at summer league as we get underway second quarter was seeing Anton go against his former Zags teammate Drew Timmy. Dozen for Watson that night. A 24 and 10 double double for Drew. had a great showing in Las Vegas. I know that was a treat for Zags and college basketball fans. Kate’s been sharp early. He gets a defensive deflection here. We’re tied at 24 as we pick up the second quarter, but Janna Hearn and Randolph Childris JB Long, I got to ask you, are you disappointed you didn’t get a chance to call? A little bit. I’m a big Timmy fan. Let’s get it out. Let’s get it out. We saw that, you know, even Kendrick Perkins had taken notice of what he done here in Las Vegas. We did have a chance to see his squad, but uh he was in bubble wrap yesterday over at Thomas and Mack off front iron. Pate rising for the rebound. Glad you can get it out. We could talk about Oh, you saw me squeeze it in there on the back of a Anton Watson interview. Nice laying. Mohamd 6’10 from Paris. Second round pick out of Cholelay in France. Quick spin baseline. No help coming. lays it in. Dylan Jones has not been shy. That one well short. Defender may have got a piece. Bo Champ. One thing you you wonder about with with Mike Brown, Mike Brown likes pace. He likes a ton of pace. So though he’s not coaching yet, I know he’s he’s watching these guys. He’s he wants guys. He wants ball movement, body movement. He wants tempo. two-time NBA coach of the year let go by the Kings last season despite breaking the longest postseason drought in NBA history back in 2023. One of his two coach of the year awards. Bo Champ off front iron. What does Brown bring to New York as they try to break through to next year’s finals after making a great run to the Eastern Conference? Yeah, listen. It was talked about a bunch, but this is to win a championship in New York. You know, he’s come in and and he’s outstanding coach. He’s well respected, but he’s no question about it. He’s coming in to try to take that standing coach. He’s well respected, but he’s no question about it. He’s coming in to try to take that. He knows what it takes. Dylan Jones into double figures and we’ll have a chance at a three-point play. It was cool to see the Garden rocking, wasn’t it? No question. This sport is better when the Knicks are relevant in there in the final four. Those guys will enjoy playing for him. He’s demanding, but he is fair and he’s tough and he’s great coaching. I think the Knicks got better by adding him. Dink pates attacks and is fouled before he can get lifted, but there will be some adjustments. I think I think people don’t talk about it enough. You think about what we talked about style of play. I mean, he wants to pace. You know, Brunson had a, you know, probably had to have dominate the ball a lot. and we’ll see how, you know, what Mike Brown tweaks. In some ways, these summer league rosters are a reflection of where each of these organizations are, right, in their growth curve. Absolutely. And and so the Knicks are, you know, they’re in a win now mode. So, a lot of times when younger guys, they’re like, “Hey, you got to play.” A lot of draft, we see a lot of their drafties and a lot of veteran experienced guys out here with some NBA minutes playing because of where they are. Whereas you look on the other side, the Wizards, they’re still in the talent acquisition. [Music] Better get out there and guard him. That three-point percentage is going up. Gilbert with the handle. Wow. Oh, that was nice. Great job there by Keshan taking the contact. Champ hunting cannot answer. You know he’s new. He does have his name on the back of his jersey. Rain Smith setting up Pierre there. Let’s get it to Gianna for more on how rain came to this game. had six players. So he tried to think of what agents he knew, what players he was interested in. And he said the first person that he text was Rain Smith and Rain said, “Have you talked to my agent yet?” And he said, “I haven’t talked to him yet, but are you ready to play?” So he got in touch with his agent. And his agent said, “Rain Smith is a hooper. Always ready to play.” And you know, Jonathan called the GM. He added that when he did text him, Smith was actually working out at Impact. So, he had just finished playing with Denver. His summer league was wrapped up and he was back in the gym getting ready already. So, for an undrafted guy like him, this is a second opportunity. Yeah, Randolph was in the gym this morning, too, after an early night in Las Vegas. Yeah, I’m ready. I got my NBA socks on. They gave him 10 fouls and I would use all of them right now. So, if they need me, you know, I’m available. Jonathan Pierre there, a former D2 national champion. Of course, we wake up this morning. We’re prepping for Trey Johnson and Alex Sar and Will Riley and the Washington Wizards and next thing you know Rain Smith the 22-year-old Australian is on the board. But this is his style of play and is you know he can easily slide in and do this because this is how he played at Louisville. Just come in chase follow shots get get up get up jumpers and play ball. All right you see his numbers last night with the Nuggets. We’ll see if he can hit a few against the Knicks this afternoon. [Music] [Music] and you had the right veteran piece to teach these guys how to be pros and that that’s that’s the next step for the Washington Wizards Sar set a summer league record with eight blocks as a win over Brooklyn earlier in this summer league. For him, his next step needs to be in the defensive player of the year conversations. The offense will come. He’s one of these guys that knows his defense is further along than its offense. About the six minutee mark here, second quarter. Still a one possession game. Johnny have more on our conversation. You guys were just talking about Alex Sar that eight block game. He also had 16 points and 12 rebounds to go with that. But after the game, they asked him how was he able to do it and he said quote just being present and aggressive defensively. I feel like I just had the urgency to win and to impact the game. Then his coach JJ Outlaw, he followed that up about the performance saying quote, “He’s a really good rim protector. He anchors our defense and that’s what we wanted to see from him at Summer League. We wanted to see his aggressiveness and him being engaged. He was the only player to rank in the top five in points, boards, blocks, and minutes per game among rookies. And he’s different because the expectations, right? You come in and his guidance defense is much further along in the offensive. He’s raw in the offensive end, but the way the Wizards are bringing him along, like, hey, beak, you talked about eight blocks, like no one else in summer league has eight blocks in a game. That tells you where they want his attention. And the offensive things, they’ll come along. spins it through. That’s what you want to see. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] That’s what you want to see too over time. I mean, is doing a really good job of just showing you his vision as well. You look at his overall game being unselfish. He’s just knocked down a three and now he passes it to a teammate there. Summer league action continuing on NBA TV, ESPN and the ESPN app. Today on ESPN, the semifinals, Kings and Raptors already underway. Then the Hornets and Thunder at 6 Eastern. Coming up next on NBA TV, we’ve got the Rockets and the Timberwolves who were very nearly in that semifinal picture. Half a dozen teams went undefeated. It was decided on margin. Keshan Gilbert attacks the big, gets to the left hand, left it on the iron. Kick the other way with numbers. Sprays it to the corner. Baba misses the three. Gilbert working the jab, finds Gak at the top, comes back to get it. Gilbert working the jab, finds Gak at the top, comes back to get it. Gilbert puts it up. Gak couldn’t I do say on this end of the floor for Tyler Koh, it’s important for him to really be engaged on the defensive end of the floor. I think it’s a perfect setup for him because of Jaylen Brunson, not just because they’re lefties, because Jaylen Brunson is relatively small guard. So, they’re well equipped defensively to cover up with length around him. So, you want that from your backup. Watkins using that screen to rise for two. Splashy. Watkins using that screen to rise for two. We were talking about him in the opening. A tremendous opportunity for him and he’s taken advantage of it. I mean, he’s a player, making his impact defensively and then just tacking on the buckets. Yeah. The only question you’re going to have about him is concern is whether he can consistently knock down jump shots. And he’s shown you he can do that. Knocking down two already, even though he missed that open one there. Looks good. To silence you right mid. Yeah, I was hoping he would. I’m cheering for him. I’m a big Jamir Watkins fan. You’re just reading the scatter report. I know those those aren’t your thoughts necessarily on what he’s capable of. I know. I am a big fan. I’ve seen him do it too many times. And again, this is where he’s find you don’t have to double with him in a post. That’s what I mean. He’s so versatile defensively. Just fits right into that group. And he brings this organization of of the young talent that they’ve collected. He fits along with Sar where it’s on the defensive end of the floor is where his impact will be greatest. They’ve got other guys. Trey Johnson’s coming in and he’s a bucket getter. That’s just what he does. You need guys to come in and kind of guard and that’s what Watkins will do from day one. Jack, as you see, will get a break. Liam Robbins in. Dylan Jones also the leading scoreer back on the floor. He and Watkins with 11 apiece. I’m going to get up and start stretching, man. I may they may need me in the second half here. I need a bike, man. You got something. It’s a little chilly in here. Hey man, I said this to you earlier. The only handicap I want to be talking about with you is your golf index. Okay, I appreciate that. The way Achilles are going these days, you stay right here with me. I appreciate it. Talk me out of it. I have my moments. Kak, there it is. That’s more like it for Tyler Kak. No hesitation. Just be aggressive. You’re talking about a coach coming in that had De’Aran Fox playing with pace and had him playing at an all-star level. He wants that pace out of his point guards again. Get it and push it. This the place. Yes. Play. He’s going to let you play. You make it easier on everyone else as a point guard, particularly in transition. He’s not athletically gifted over everyone, so take advantage of that with guys retreating in the tackle. I like that refeed to diara who couldn’t pay it off. Gilbert going the other way with Jones and a defensive stand for Tyler Kov. Great job there making plays. We talked about it on one end of the floor. Got his teammates off the bench. Hey, he talked about his offense. You still got to compete. Great job. You got to find ways when you’re an undersized guard. Great job, Tyler Co. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] He’s starting to heat up and pick things up. One of the bit of Knicks related news that just crossed the wire. The National Basketball Coaches Association has announced that Hall of Famer and current Knicks assistant coach Mo Cheeks will receive its 2025 Tex Winter Assistant Coach Lifetime Impact Award. So that’s cool in the context of our game as the Knicks and Wizards wind down this first half. James Nagi rocks the rim. Good feed there. Nazi standing in a dunker spot. The beneficiary of a dribble penetration by the Knicks. Shout out to Michael Doyle by the way for passing that note about Moic along in game here as we monitor the action in Las Vegas at the pavilion. Bo Champ looks to turn the corner. Big on bounce but trapped. Goes behind the back. Comes out to P. Short clock from the corner. Three on the way. Got it. Hey, Tom Watson having a day. No doubt about that one. Great offense there by the Knicks. Largest lead for either team. Now they’ve got numbers. Bo Champ running. Gets to the second side. Time out Washington. Bo Champ running. Gets to the second side. Time out Washington. Knicks are starting to turn the loose ball, but Watson’s like, “I’ll take that corner three. It’s good. [Music] [Music] Lane products went to Konaga Prep in Spokane then played for the Zags and Tom’s from a really athletic family. Dad Dion played for the Idaho Vandals. He’s got their rebounding record. Older brother Dion played football at Idaho, too. Sister chose volleyball. 90 seconds left in our opening half. A lot of great conversations over dinner with that family. Imagine, you can imagine the arguments. Bragging rights. All right, G. Lays it off the glass. Doing it again. He knows dribble penetration. He is cutting. It’s a great way to get easy buckets. You don’t have to work hard for it. Just follow your guard down the lane. He’s three of five from the floor. Tyler Kick working against Watkins. TE’s up off iron. Battle for the board. Washington breaks out numbers if they hurry. Watkins calls his own number and finger rolls it in. Ability to get loose balls rebounded and push it. Challenge you at the rim. He has the size and athletic ability that he can elevate against athletic bigs and finish. Co steps into three. Offensive rebound. Another chance for the Knicks. go two for one here at the end of the half. Ai up to screen. P in double figures as well. Has to beat the buzzer and does but missed the shot. So a negligible difference now between our clocks. Washington wants the last with Kean Gilbert. gives a foul. Yeah, look for G to keep it here and that run up ball screen. He’ll decide which defender he wants to attack. That was a foul to give in our last two minutes. So now they’ll play it straight up. Gilbert and Kick again. Gilbert behind the back gets two feet in the lane. Block winding. Watkins launching and they go to the locker room separated by it look like McCulli Spooka for the Knicks. AJ Johnson, Buck Carrington, Trey Johnson all out for the Wizards along with Keshan George, Alex Sar, Will Riley. some of the names you might have been tuning in to get a glimpse of. Played earlier in the week here in Las Vegas, but uh they’re turning their attention training camp in the 2526 season ahead. A three-point opportunity to spark our third quarter for the Washington Wizards as Keshan Gilbert goes hard. Keshan Gilbert has done a great job of just pushing tempo and again getting in the paint that time taking the contact and getting a chance to go to the free throw line for an and one. Again, he’s a really good scorer of basketball as well. Undersized guard, but he’s really efficient when he gets in there and finishing. Really crafty. Mohamd snags that board. Here come the Knicks. Basketball and a three-point lead. Day Grant the starting lineup now. Tyler Kohley didn’t start the second half and wonder if maybe he’s shut down now for the summer, you know, for the rest of the game. It’s Udai Baba in his place with the five running right now for the Knicks and Jordan Brink their summer league head coach from the top. Re spins out. Grant fighting for the rebound. It comes away to the Wizards instead. Gilbert two on three. Oh, a soap bubble. Beautiful loader in his game. You know, it’s some coaches and programs are anti mid-range. That’s a big part of Gilbert’s game and I think it’s a necess a necessity for undersized guards to get in the paint. Baba barely grazes iron and then he undercut the rebounder there as Dylan Jones survives a dangerous play. I mean just getting there doesn’t get too deep. Stops, pops, touch. Love to see that smaller guards there. Instead of going to the rim, get challenged by the trees, altering the shot, just stop, pull up. Cubert definitely has that in his bag. I’m reminded what a um basketball convention this week has been. Summer league in the NBA. Kind of putting the book end on one season and turning the page to another. um from all stages and all walks of basketball life. I just had a former member of an NFL franchise walk through here now working with the New York Knicks and tap me on the shoulder. It’s it’s a reunion for all of us. It’s pretty cool. I mean, you’re a superstar, man. Everybody knows you. Well, you get tapped on the shoulder in the middle of a live broadcast and you see someone out of context, you wonder what world you’re living in. Especially after a few days in Los. You see someone out of context, you wonder what world you’re living in. Especially after a few days in line. Kind of wet my appetite. I don’t know about yours for the season ahead. Right. You talk about the big picture dynamics with a fierce West getting stronger, the East available to a wide swath of competitors, Oklahoma City out to do some dynasty things perhaps, and then what about that LeBron piece to the puzzle? It’s all waiting for us end of this summer and in the season ahead. Yeah, still a lot of conversations. Teams are still in the the talent acquisition phase of their rosters. Now, you’ll see when summer league ends, there’ll be some additions and some subtractions and interesting to see where, you know, the step the teams are looking to take. Again, we got to deal with the expectations of each team. I think both of these team right now we’re looking at are in a microcosm of where you want to be. You’re either either rebuilding or you’re competing for a championship. And the Knicks are and the Wizards are rebuilding. Dawara off the heel. Watkins got a hand on that rebound. that belongs to Dylan Jones and the Wizards. [Music] It’s a sloppy path that Pierre couldn’t handle. Going back the other way. All right. So, you’re saying some of us will go on vacation and others will go back to work put the finishing touches on their roster. And I’m one of those guys going on vacation. So, let me say that. But no, I you know, you got to go to work in the front offices now. They’re you know, a lot of players will go away, kind of regroup, get ready for training camp in the fall. And some of these guys have to decide if they’re going to be GLeague guys. Maybe go across the pond. Great find inside. The layup for Watson. Just finding ways. Watson continues to find ways of scoring. Again, showing you everything. Moving without the basketball, taking you off the bounce and knocking down threes. No foul there, just out of bounds. And the Wizards will keep it. Watson here just again cuts weak side. What you’re taught to do when your defender turns his head on a weak side. He’s ball watching. You cut Watson leading the Knicks with 12 points. Pierre slams on the brakes, finds a shooter in the corner. Well done. Dylan Jones the beneficiary. Dylan Jones has played well. Just a little bit of everything. Showing you his allaround game. He’s got 14. Knicks don’t have the answer. Back tap for more though. Grant rises. Off the mark from three. Off the mark from three. One and done for the Wizards on this trip. First chance to call Lance Wear’s name. He’s in the game for the next 45 and white. has got to know he’s got to tighten up the handles on that. Gat does a great job of stripping him. I thought his crossover was a little too wide there. Rattles out on Watkins. All Nicks there for the board. Baba baseline. Watson in the slot. Bam. Great find. Big hit. Great job there again on a penetration by Baba driving a gap forces the rotation recapture the lead working hard off the ball be a foul on Granta hits the gap and Watson’s already shooting it well he’s knocked down two threes that time he’s in the slot not in the corner but it does not matter he is seeing in the rim well today. Baba, former Japanese BL defensive player of today. Baba, former Japanese BL defensive player of catching pass there by Cat 611. Big showing you his vision. Deflected out of bounds. It’ll go back to the Knicks when we come back to Las Vegas. A one-point game in the third. [Music] [Music] Ah, ah. [Music] Heat. Hey. Hey. Hey. [Music] [Music] [Music] of that. They said that Carmelo Anthony told him, “Age is nothing but a number. It doesn’t matter once you get into the league. He said, “Right now, I’m not worried about my age either. I’m built for this and I’m ready.” Thank you, Janna. Maybe just a number to him as Jonathan puts in, too. But the way he’s shooting the ball at his size and still south of 20, I think that’s going to draw some interest. I mean, he’s one of the guys at that age and that ability you you want to invest in showing you consistently he can shoot it from deep. Watson to P. Extra to the corner. Grant nicely done by the Knicks. Great job there. Fake with the extra the one more pass there. I think he’s knocked down a couple shots. Transition layup for Dylan Jones. Pate knows that it’s just a number that we all look at with a ton of envy. Yeah. I mean, that sounds like a pickup line though. You know, ain’t nothing but a number. You’re like, “Hey.” But no, credit to him. He’s he’s It’s great to have that in his journey. The way he’s going to have to make it, he’s going to need that type of mindset and approach. Baba again spraying it to the opposite corner. He’s picked up a couple assists in this corner as Anton Watson stays hot. Watson’s loving playing with Baba. He’s hitting gaps and finding guys just playing the right way. Gilbert with a sweet pass. Wizards doing some of the same, just no result as Pate pulls down the rebound. Yeah, Watkins again. His last three shots have been threes. He hadn’t been able to knock him down. He’s had a good game. P gets a fresh dribble making the most of it. Well off the mark, but an offensive rebound. Where creates the plus possess the mark, but an offensive rebound. Where creates the plus possession. Wow. You mentioned it earlier. Gak just diving. I think he’s just an interesting prospect. A guy. Again, I first saw him. He was playing AAU basketball with the PSA Cardinals and decided to go to Europe right away to play and his vision, his passing in the middle of the floor. You’re going to have to get up and pressure him. Grant from the Vegas strip. shooting it over gap. Forget your length. Better to get out here. Now the Knicks digging in defensively. They get a deflection out of bounds with 248 to go in the frame. And look at the back door cut again. Cuban beneficiary of a couple of good passes by G. And Grant shoots it from the strip knocking it down. [Music] Hey. Hey. Hey. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] [Music] [Music] and the New York Knicks with Janna Hearn and Randolph Childris. I’m JB Long. An ultimate day of competition here. Semiis underway. And over here at the Pavilion, a steal and a run out for Dink with authority. It’s a great play from the weak side seeing it. He saw that fade screen coming set setting up for Rain Smith to get that three. Uh-uh. He wasn’t having any of it. Got him a highlight finish as well. 13 points, six boards for Payton. It’s that 19-year-old lift he’s still got working. That was a sharp shooting. put on display this week in Vegas. Off the cross, goes begging for Grants and it’ll stay here with the Knicks. You want to draw attention, this is how you do it. Get the steal here and go make a post to my man Dunk. Smile at the camera. Say cheese. Let him know. Now takes a screen from Naji. working off the handle. Short clock situation here. Nick’s got to go. Able to draw iron. That was Jamal Bay with the miss and a travel in transition. Dylan Jones like who called that? It’s like you was sitting right there and you let the official across the court call it. Dylan Jones just does a little bit of everything well. had himself a really good game. Grant on the pull up. Pops out on him. Johnson now working on a double double. 16 and 10 after that rebound. Here he is with the rock. He’s been good. I mean, he’s done everything. Just a rolling ball of butcher knives to the cup, isn’t he? Got active hands. He’s driven it. Physical guard, uses his body well, knocked down shots when he’s gotten opportunities, but he’s done a lot of creating for himself and his teammates. He and Dame Lillard, the two first round picks out of Wever State, and that program’s history. Robbins couldn’t get the put back, but Washington will get it back with 119 remaining in the third. Knicks 61, Wizards 55 in this Vegas finale. And these guys are playing hard. It’s the last day of summer league. They’ve been in Vegas quite some time. Another good look. Yeah, it was Watkins with the dish this time sending Jones to the foul line. And he has that in this game. I mean, you can run ball screen actions with him and he has the athletic ability and length to throw it over the top and that that time threaded the needle on the back door cut. with two guys. That middle ball screen is just really difficult to defend because the strong side and weak side of the court changes in just a split second and sometimes it happens quicker than the defense can rotate. Jones was an NBA champion with the Thunder appearing in 54 regular season games, 10 postseason contests as a rookie. Then in late June, he and a future second came back from OKC for Colby Jones. 17 points, 10 rebounds for him as we hit the final minute and he picks a pocket. Have a day. Back to the line. He’s a player. He really is a player. I mean, he does, like I said, doesn’t look like he does anything great, but here he’s on the ball creating a steal there. Initiated offense for the Witch. Look at that pick in the pocket of Granton. Forcing Grant to foul from Columbia, South Carolina. Six of eight at the line. He’s another guy. You talk about the the young guys that’s already the draft easy. You’re looking at Dylan Jones and Chamir Watkins. Just vers Dylan Jones and Mir Watkins just versatile throw a zone at Payton company here. I wonder if you’re doing that because of Rain Smith. He has no idea what your defensive rotations are. Simplify it. Yeah, let’s play two three. Play two three zone and on the other end when you’re open shoot it. Final 30 seconds. Ding P full head of steam carries it high through the lane and finishes strong. Ding P 68 has a really good handle. He’s looked really good here. Getting extended minutes today and he’s taking advantage of 3 4 seconds separating our clocks. Paychecking Jones waiting for the screen. Sweet handle pass to the corner. Three on the way and it rattles home. What a finish. Jonathan Pierre and the Wizards. Here’s the heave from half court and Grant nearly drained it. Jones, you like him. I can tell. I do. I mean, it’s tells a lot about a guy. I mean, you and I have had the pleasure over these last couple of days of talking to multiple guys and we both love Leagore and and what he’s going to become and what he is. And I think that might be my second favorite player now in some league. Another bucket off the baseline trigger. Dylan Jones cutting away from the basketball. I mean, the one thing I love about him is that he’s he’s true to himself. He’s not playing sped up. He’s using his body. Just so under control. Naji undercut. He’ll have to earn it at the line. Yeah. One thing I ran off referencing our conversation with Yman um yesterday and so much was made about all those picks that Brooklyn made. He was a really nice conversation. Someone that we’re looking forward to following as his rookie season develops. But he reminded us just what a grueling stretch it’s been for drafted rookies. When you think about a full college season, draft prep, combine, draft night, joining a new organization, coming to summer league, they got to reset because the next step is even steeper. And you don’t know where that’s going to be. You’re talking about this stretch continued from August where you know you’re trying to you haven’t stopped since you were training from a year ago in your season and it ends. You got to you can’t take a break. There’s no vacation time. You’re you’re flying around. you’re doing these NBA workouts and the anxiety of where you’re going to go, if you’re going to get picked, then you get picked and you got to say, “Hey, am I going to stick? Am I getting invited to camp? Am I getting invited to G-League? Do I have to go to Europe?” There’s a that that process is not over. You got a big decisions coming coming up for a lot of these young men. For those who aren’t locked into a roster spot, one of the interesting points that I think you’ve made over the course of our week together is just how different the path is abroad versus in the GLeague, both in terms of what your life is going to look like and then also the style of basketball you’re going to be playing. Completely totally, you know, different styles. People don’t realize all the gathering and all the NBA moves you can do. You know, you start talking about European basketball, you got to put the ball down before you dribble. You’re not getting any of those things. um style of play is different, a lot less dribbling, a lot more ball movement and your role changes with those. You can go to Europe and be, you know, a bigger part of the offense. You go to the NBA, your job is to defend and get stops. And Jamir Watkins is showing you he can do that with the best of them. Had it slacked away as he went for that layup. Paint on the counter. Naji running to his right. That’s where he dishes. Kept that foot down. Whirling through traffic. Lost the handle. Kean Gilbert the other way for Washington. Spots rain in the corner. Here it comes from Smith. He doesn’t miss many of those. Not the open ones. But one thing for sure, he won’t hesitate shooting it. That I can guarantee you. And I think the next thing for these guys, the ones that do get the opportunity is you got to find you a vet, the right vet and understand who you are. But you got to find the right vet that’s going to teach you that that understand position that you’re in. Splash from below the break. Jaden Campbell. Camp was knocked down his second three. Gilbert on a wicked cross. Lost the handle on the way up and he’s got two foul shots. Baba got caught in the crosshairs there. He was chasing Rain Smith to the corner. He looks up. Gilovage coming downhill at him. Made some plays. I mean, he hasn’t gotten a lot of shot attempts, but he’s hit some gaps, made some plays, just hadn’t knocked down any shots for on the offensive end, but he’s gone to a couple Olympics with the Japanese national team. He’s playing the right way. I mean, he’s not here trying to do too much. He’s not trying to force the issue. He’s got enough basketball experience and big moments to do that. And 0 for three still. You see him there. He’s communicating, talking to his guys. Miss free throw. An opportunity to tie the game there at the seven minute mark. So the Knicks maintain their narrow lead. They get the basketball back. Baba rocks into a triple. One and done for the Knicks. Rebound to Watkins. And Baba struggling from behind the three-point line. He’s take all four of his shots with threes. Good action here and a foul. Washington going hard to the cop trying to shoot their free throws back to the lead. Good job here. Watkins again. He’s taken a ton of threes here and made a couple, but this is what he does best. Attack the basket. Athletic enough to go up among the trees, too. That falls for the Florida State products after three seasons at VCU as well. Had 13 in Washington’s most recent contest. 14 and seven working here today. Jamir Watkins has helped the Wizards recapture the lead. Under seven minutes to go in the finale for both of these franchises. Another zone look defensively from Washington. Jamal Bay identifies, finds De and it was halfway down. How did that not go in? He’s laughing at that one. I thought he had himself one. Jack been distributed. Now he’s screened. Gilbert’s got his defender on his back. Yeah, I saw that. Our vantage point was perfect. You could see that off hand holding Baba the defender. But that’s on Gats. You can see him explaining. He’s holding his man. We call it putting him in jail. Gat’s got to rotate quicker. See, he comes off. He’s waiting now. He’s telling him to run for the lob. Gat’s just kind of short rolling. He’s saying go to the rim. He creates space and he can lay it off to him. And I can tell you as a guard, you’re doing that. You need separation to make the read when you’re a smaller guard. The guy had gone for the lob, he would have gotten himself an easy dunk, which he had done a great job of so far this game. But the timing and the rhythm of that sequence had fallen off track. But he’s been doing a better job all game of just driving off the guard’s hip. That time he needed to be out in front. Anton Watson falling away. Another empty possession for New York. Dylan Jones wants to settle into the offense with the ball at a one-point lead. He’s just doing everything. rebounding, pushing it, playing point, initiating offense. There’s no question who’s been the best player in this game today, and that’s been Dylan Jones again with the basketball, seeing two defenders from the baseline, falling away. Dylan Jones has been electric. Having himself a game, just doing what he wants when he wants. I mean, he’s showing you everything because you can’t speed him up again. He’s playing using his body that time. dribbles, gets to his spot, shoots the baseline fade away. Good find from Baba. Campbell strikes another making shots. He’s finding guys on that weak side. 15 ties. He’s finding guys on that weak side. 15 ties for Dylan Jones and the Washington Wizards. We were worried about what type of game we were going to have and we have ourselves a really good basketball game here. Jamal Bay Washington couldn’t find it. Offensive rebound for New York. Bay reloads. Let it go on the trip. Let it go, baby. He hadn’t gotten a lot, but they they’re open shots. Take them. No hesitation. Pierre lines up a triple and banks it in. Time out New York as the Wizards take a fivepoint lead with a bit of good fortune. [Music] [Music] Jones has controlled this game and he’s been he’s been a force for the Washington Wizards. Back on top by five Grant brings it for the New York Knicks. There’s Mohamd Diara. Grant finds Watson. Great passing out of the They’re back within a possession. Great job there attacking the zone. You can see they did a better job of screening the guards at the top, getting in the lane, putting Gat in the middle of that zone in the blender. He didn’t know what to do. He had to step up and stop penetration then try to get back and protect the rim. Unable to do so. Gilbert with a strong take. No finish. Tap rebound. Reigns got it. Over to Pierre. Oh, he still has the hot hand from three. Pierre didn’t need any glass to make that one. Four of eight from behind the arc. Now Pace gets in deep. Flips it up and in. Ding P with a chance for three. You’re talking about a young man and show his size. We talked about his story. Just catches it there. He’s knocked down a couple of threes. You got to get out to him. He drives it, initiates the contact, gets it up in a chance here at an and one. He’s been really really impressed with this. 17 and 10 as he goes to the line. First name Sasha goes by Dink Pun 6’7 still 19 years of age. Well short on that foul shot and the Wizards have that loose ball rebound. Keshan Gilbert secures with a four-point lead. Both these teams looking for their second win of the week. Gilbert sheds the defender and scoops it up and in. Gilbert’s just showing you now he can be a point guard. He shared that point guard responsibilities in Iowa State. Handled himself well here today. Mohamd Dawara off the crossover to the corner. Anton Watson knocked down another three there. His fifth make from distance. 21 points. Once again, a three-point game. I thought he had one the previous possession and turned it down, but he did a good job. Nink just drove it and got a three-point play. So, worked out well for the Knicks. Step back triple. Watson off front iron and it falls. Let him in. It got cold from three. started out knocking down his first two, then he got cold. It was good for him to knock that one down. Aday Grant rotates it to Dior with six to shoot. Had it knocked away. 4.8 left for the Knicks from the baseline of a chance to draw it up as Jamir Watkins continues to shine. The three-point shooting in crunch time. [Music] Three [Music] piece. He’s trying to leave Las Vegas on a high note. It’s been a thrilling, entertaining game. All that we could ask for on this final Saturday of summer league. And we’re not done yet. Day Grant from the baseline to bring it in for the Knicks. They trail by two possessions with 216 remaining. Get it into the step back three. Back tap. New clock. Dink P using the up fake. Nearly coughed it up. Grant rocks into a triple. The Wizards dodge a couple there. They’ve got the lead in the ball. Nick’s had a couple good looks there. Really physical play inside. No whistle. Knicks rip it out. Got to capitalize here. Dawara with the left. Now they trap, get to the floor. Wow. Mohamdara with a burst. Look at the drive here. Getting the angle. He’s been really physical when he’s d, you know, put his head down and got to the rim. Much more comfortable facing the basket off the bounce. Knicks are extending their defense. They’ve gotten really physical. The refs have let him play these last couple possessions. Keshan Gilbert slaloming through traffic. Feeds the corner. Big hits. Jamir Watkins. Great drive there by Gilbert finding Watkins in the corner. Wow, what an answer. D on the step back. Back and forth we go. 20 points for Pate. It’s a four-point game. And that’s all coming from the bench. He’s been really good. Gilbert maintaining that dribble, keeping it alive from the foul line. He sinks. He can do that now. He’s done a great job of trying to be a facilitating point guard. He can score. Diawara trying to put it all on display. Grant from the mid-range couldn’t put it back. That’s a big clear for Pierre and the Wizards now. The final minute up six. Yeah, you’d like a better shot there for the Knicks. You’re in the guts of the game now. You needed to come away with something. G with the finishing touches. Gave the assist to Pierre who’s been sharp from distance. That’s how Gat’s been contributing on the offensive end. Now the steal and Watkins cleared for takeoff. The Wizards run away with it in the end. Jaden Campbell trying to minimize the damage. 19 left and a timeout before that inbounds. What a gutsy performance by the Wizards. I mean, you’re talking about guys coming out. Just been impressive to watch. I mean led by these guys. I mean got just the beneficiary of the lob there been in that dunker spots all day and Watkins has just been doing it all game long. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] NBA TV, ESPN, and the ESPN app. Today on ESPN, the semifinals with Kings and Raptors already going. Then it’s Hornets and Thunder coming up at 6 Eastern will be here next on NBA TV. Rockets and Timberwolves. Rockets try not to get shut out. Timberwolves looking for a perfect stretch in Las Vegas. What gives? get a win or being undefeated. The Kings are up by three, 4845. Rain Smith takes the foul with 18.1. Washington hit their last seven shots to keep New York at distance. That’s how you close a game. Did it every way. You got to be proud of these young men of Wizards coaching staff. And you you pull a guy out of a gym out of his workout, man. I know how that feels. I’m in the gym working out. I don’t want anybody call me telling me to My wife would call me and say, “It’s hot outside. go let the dogs in or go do anything. It’s like, let me work out, right? Yeah. From the elliptical trying to salt the game away at the foul line. Come on, man. You know, he’s young enough. He might have been running on the treadmill, though. He might have been doing something. I know you were doing burp. I didn’t mean to hit you with the I am on the court. Make no mistake. In case you missed the story earlier, Rain Smith played last night for Denver. now suiting up for the short-handed Washington Wizards while they rest their key pieces in preparation for next season. The Australian who played at Charleston and Louisville here in the States helping to salt this one away. Back to a 9-point margin with 16.6. Jordan Brink going to use every fraction of the seconds. I mean, talking about Rain Smith, I mean, Wizards only has six players until he came. And he’s actually got pretty good minutes. Let’s take a look at those Eastern Conference standings while we wait for the finishing moments here. Wow. You know, Cleveland far from forgotten, right? Still had the best record. Yes. But this picture is going to be shaken up for sure. Absolutely. We don’t know what I mean, you talking about the dame effect of Milwaukee. What does that look like? I know, you know, Anthony, Colony’s there now. But I think Orlando takes a step up. Philly, if they’re healthy, you’ve got to put them up. And then the Knicks are just right there knocking at the door under new leadership. And then the Knicks are just right there knocking at the door under new leadership. It is completely wide open. Got a chance to talk to him earlier. Mike’s laughing now. He’s He gets to enjoy it now. He’s The wins and losses don’t mount up. What a great coach. I think the Knicks will be really pleased. A defensive board for Washington and they should be able to dribble it out. What a day for this man right here. Yeah, how about that? He’s been the best player on the floor.
