Patrick Williams: $18M bust or untapped potential?

Patrick Williams: $18M bust or untapped potential?

They called Patrick Williams. This wrote written by Austin McGee and he says that uh the Patrick Williams is the worst contract in the NBA. Now, this is a Bulls focused website. So, this is not like a national media website. And they said this, although Williams 18 per season is drastically less than many other contenders for the league’s worst contract, he’s achieved quite less than just about any player earning a lucrative salary. Uh Williams whole career averages of 9.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.8 8 steals, 0.7 uh blocks, and 1.2 three-pointers per game. And I think that’s a key part there, right? So often with Patrick Williams, we talk about the percentage of three-point shots that he makes where volume does matter into that as well. And when you’re shooting such a low volume, yeah, your percentages better be high, right? But here’s the thing. Patrick Williams is never going to be a counting stats darling. We all know that. Um he’s not had that role. He hasn’t earned that role, and that’s what it comes down to. But then when you start looking at some of the other advanced things that are really kind of frustrating, Patrick Williams is 27th in win shares amongst his draft class of the 2020 draft class. He ranks below Sadique Bay, Trey Jones, KJ Martin, Paul Reed, Jaylen Smith, and Xavier Tilman senior, right? And that is pretty bad when you look at the that fact that he was the fourth overall pick in that draft. He’s 27th in win shares. That means that you were basically have win shares of a of a second round pick almost, right? And that’s the problem in the in the disappointment in Patrick Williams. But in and I’m going to use this article more so if you can’t tell, I’m trying to be more positive in this episode. I want to talk about this. A Patrick Williams that finally wakes up can completely and utterly change the way that this team operates. And I don’t mean that by hyperbole. If Patrick Williams can come in and be a 3N and D player, and I mean go back to the player that played tough, strong defense on some of the better wings in the NBA. If you can go back to that for a team that needs on ball defenders, you can really change that. And then on top of that, if you can hit the three at a decent enough rate on more volume, Patrick Williams doesn’t have to do a whole lot to be to to make this Bulls team better. Now, he does need to do a whole lot if he wants to turn his career completely around, but let’s let’s not even let’s move off the fourth overall pick thing. Let’s just talk about Patrick Williams as a player and as a role on this team. I said it before we even drafted Noah SNK and traded for Isaac Akuru. This team, every year that goes by, Patrick Williams becomes less and less prioritized. And you’re talking about how many forwards we now have on this team, Patrick Williams is going to find it very difficult to crack the rotation consistently unless he’s playing well. If he’s not playing well, guess what? You got guys that even at at a minimum are going to play better than you. And we said it Pat the Designer said it on lockdown on Bulls like a year ago. You got dogs behind you, ready to

THE VOICE OF THE FANS!

  1. I think this is truly Pats last chance to prove himself, nobody believes in you, how will you respond?

  2. He was a bench player in college…..I have no clue what AK was thinking drafting him. Look at his stats, he's consistent…..his stats are his stats across the board. He's never going to improve. He is who he is and doesn't have the mindset to "wake up" and become a different player.

  3. Everybody you named played for WAY better teams with REAL STARS most of those guys probably have better percentages that PWill too because they get more WIDE OPEN SHOTS!!!!!!!! Bulls have been trying to turn PWill into Kawhi since draft night and while it’s still possible we shouldn’t be trying to make him a star ESPECIALLY when he said he PREFERS to come off the bench. WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU WHO THEY ARE LISTEN TO THEM!!!!!!! HE WAS THE 6TH MAN OF THE YEAR IN COLLEGE LET HIM BE THAT IN THE NBA!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. I think they targeted Okoro with the idea in mind that he could fill the diminished role and expectations they had planned for Williams.

Yes, Okoro is a little smaller, but he has what Patrick Williams doesn't have, and that is a relentless aggression. We have seen first-hand Javonte Green demonstrate for us how a player can make up for being a little bit shorter.

Before the Bulls had to prioritize Williams, due to his draft status, and their sheer lack of forwards on the team. Now, though, the Bulls have more than enough forwards on their roster, so P-Will is going to have to truly earn his role and the minutes he receives.

Don't get me wrong, there is definitely still a role for Patrick Williams, but he has to play consistently hard and he will need to improve his volume of 3PM. He has to show a pulse, and bring some aggression to the court. Maybe Okoro can show Williams the way, and the competition might light a fire under his behind.

If Williams can rebound and become a viable forward off the bench, then Billy Donovan will have some pretty intriguing defensive rotations he can play with.

Think about having a second rotation using any combo of the following: T.Jones, Ayo, D.Terry, I.Okoro, J.Phillips, P.Will, Noa Essengue, Z.Collins, J.Smith.

You can mix and match the rotations, but that's a heck of a second grouping after potentially having Giddey, C.White, K.Huerter, M.Buzelis, and Vucevic as starters.

I think that last spot in the starting unit might come down to Huerter, Phillips, Okoro, Terry, or P.Williams. I just cannot fathom Essengue getting any minutes starting. Maybe he might earn a look after the trade deadline, and after the Bulls trade away some of the guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

Anyways, it'll be interesting to see who Donovan ultimately picks to start games, but it will be more important to see who he uses to finish games.

  5. I may be in the minority, but I am actually really excited to watch this team this year. I'm not expecting them to win the majority of their games, but I do expect to see a fast-paced, aggressive brand of basketball where the Bulls look to use tempo and keep the ball moving offensively. Defensively, I expect the Bulls to be tough, versatile, and I expect them to aggressively play the passing lanes, try to force errors using their length, and I expect them to try to create a new identity that revolves around pace, a high volume of possessions, and a dynamic defense.

  6. It’s motivation. I choose to let it be. Part of being a man, is how you respond to such things. I would put that quote up in my locker and then I would say F.U. to it and prove it wrong.

  7. In his defense he had to share the floor with Zach LaVine and ball hungry DeMar DeRozan. Majority of his shots he put up for threes towards the end of the shot clock because he was getting a pass from someone who was being double-teamed. This team this season is his last chance to prove he's not a bust

  8. Pwill never had a real chance. Bro you definitely endorsed the hate btw. Let’s be real. Pwill still young and can destroy anything walking on the street. Especially you.

  9. So many idiots don’t understand the role he’s NOT given offensively, stand there and wait for the kick out…. And also coming off a offseason where he wasn’t able to workout… you’ll see a difference this year….

  10. I said he would be a wasted pick when they drafted him! Either the Bulls front office is stupid or the people who buy tickets are!

  11. 1st year of the Bulls new identity. This team will be better defensively. Team oriented offense. Pat might fit better now.

  12. Patrick Williams is such a baffling player. He has all of the tools and he is still young. But he is so passive and unassertive. I want him to just be a dependable rotation player at the very least for that contract. But sometimes when he is out with injury the team plays better.

  13. U can’t judge a player based off his draft pick that’s 1 persons own being that they believed he was worth the 4th pick
