Spurs Sign David Jones Garcia To 2-Way Contract
What’s going on everyone? So, the San Antonio Spurs have signed David Jones Garcia to a two-way contract. Um, and this is per reports. Shams, according to Shams, David Jones Garcia, all summer league first team breakout guard, has agreed on a two-way NBA contract with the San Antonio Spurs. Agent Adrenus Visus, hope I probably butchered that. Um, tells ESPN, “Jones Garcia starred uh for the Spurs this month. 22 points per game, six rebounds, 53% on threes.” Um, so this is great, right? He’s a guy that really stood out, really broke out. um was one of the best players in all of summer league on top of being the best player on the Spurs summer league. Um I’m a little surprised they brought him in on a two-way and not an actual main roster spot. But I It’s funny. I made a video and I’m still going to post a video because it’s already done and it still bods true, but keep in mind when you’re watching that video, um I recorded it before. I was actually going to upload it right now when you’re watching this video, but then I got the news about David Jones Garcia. But anyway, I digress. point is is I made a video talking about where does he fit into the main roster, right? Like it what he can do and what we saw. If that translates to the NBA level, that’s fantastic. But right now, where does he fit with Devin Vel, Kell Johnson, uh Dylan Harper, right? You got Stefon Castle, De’aran Fox. Like, you have guys, you basically have your guard position locked up and you have your three locked up. I mean, even guys like Harrison Barnes and and Carter Bryant and Julian Champany, it’s like, where does he fit in on the roster? Do you kind of do this consolidation trade or something in order to free up space uh for um you know, a Garcia? Possibly, right? But now that they were able to get him on a two-way, that’s fine. Couple things though about that, right? Him on a two-way means he’s not going to get the opportunities on the main roster that he would. Now again, you could argue is there even opportunities on the main roster for him the way that the roster is currently constructed. But again, it’s it’s yes, you could argue either way he’s probably just playing spot games, right? On a two-way probably playing spot games, but even on the main roster, you could still send him down to the G-League. You could still have him play G-League minutes just to secure and lock him up. You got him locked up and secured regardless. So, I don’t think that this is like I’m I’m not trying to like downplay it to where it’s like, oh, I can’t believe they signed him on a two-way. No, it’s fine, right? you still got him under control, still on the roster, still under the Spurs banner, right? You can always bring them up at any point if need be. You can always um convert them if need be. And next year, you can always bring them in as the Spurs kind of cuz again, in the next year or so, they’re going to have to start making some decisions here. You have like Darren Fox getting paid, Jeremy Sohan’s going to get paid. you have a lot of guys that are going to start getting paid here in the next year and then the following year is like Wimi and then like so again you’re you’re talking about this team’s going to start getting pricey pretty heavily and so you’re going to need to find you know cheap options long term in like a David Jones Garcia. It also gives you the opportunity like one of the bright sides to him being on a two-way is that he you kind of get to see him in the G-League, right? It’s one thing to do it in summer league. It’s another thing to do it in G-League, right? It’s another thing to do it in the NBA. I mean, the NBA is almost another sport. I mean, there are guys that are like like far too good for the G-League. There are guys that you look at in the G-League, they’re averaging like 35 a game. Like, they look like Michael Jordan out there, but they’re never able to make it in the NBA cuz it’s just a different beast. It’s different world, right? But what this does is it allows them to kind of condition and and mold um him into the type of player that they want, but also kind of gauge and see like, okay, he’s better than everybody in summer league. Is he better than everybody in the G-League? Okay, he is better than everybody in the G-League. All right, let’s see what he is in the NBA. All right, let’s see if he’s ready to take that leap in the NBA and if he can be better than everyone in the NBA, right? He’s 23 years old, so he’s young enough to where, you know, if you spend a year or two of him kind of in this like, you know, in between space, in between spot, it’s fine. You can bring him in, have him uh, you know, he’d be 24, 25 at that point, right? So, if you’re the Spurs, you’re doing the right thing, right? I would have preferred like because my thing is like you still have two open rush spots on the main roster. Like who are you bringing in at this point, right? Like what are your like what are you doing? You’re you’re probably bringing in a flyer guy or you’re bringing in a you know or you’re bringing in like a veteran guy. The the main reason I wanted David Jones Garcia on the main roster as opposed to the a two-way is because he’ll spend more time with the main roster, right? So you get you get to keep an eye on him more. It’s not just reports from the G-League coaching staff, right? Or the co or the training staff where you’re just kind of watching tape and film. You get to see him in real time in practices operating and working with teams. I’m not saying that he won’t get those opportunities even on a two-way, but it’s not as frequent, right? He’s not traveling with the teams all the time. He’s not like, you know, he’s playing games in G-League. He’s not spending time in in film rooms, stuff like that to where you kind of get to really gauge him as a player more, right? You’re kind of getting it secondhand rather than direct. And you know, and again, like like I said, you can always have him go play in the G-League, right? Like just cuz he’s on the main roster does it. I mean, player teams do it all the time for second round or late first round picks. Like we’ll send him down to the G- League to get some reps and get some work. That’s the point of the G-League. I mean, we’ve seen veteran NBA players do rehabs and stints into the G-League, right? Like they can go and bring a guy into the G-League. I mean, Wimby could do a run in the G-League if if they wanted him to, right? So again, like you could have brought in a David Jones Garcia, let him play, you know, majority in the G-League, but allowed him to to get the, you know, the proper training and nutrition and dietary plans and workouts and all that stuff that that the main guys on the main roster are getting, right? The things that you get in the in the development team, you know, the farm team, it’s never going to be the same as what you’re getting with the main roster, and you’re one of the main guys on that team, right? Like again, you don’t have to play him a ton if you don’t want to play him a ton, right? Like if he’s kind of like your 14th guy on the bench, then he’s the 14th guy on the bench, right? Like, but at least again, he can kind of grow and develop and whatnot. And if you want him to play games and play minutes, then you play him in the G- League. But I am I’m very excited for the signing. I mean, this was obviously a no-brainer. We all knew that this was coming. Like this isn’t like a wow, I can’t believe they actually did it, right? like this is a like you had to you had to bring him in in some capacity whether it was a main roster or sorry like you had to bring him in one way or another. Um but him if he can be I mean even half of what he was right during um summer league in the actual NBA then I mean you got a real gem right now I kind of look at him as like the the Lou Williams type role a guy coming off the bench giving you can he give you 15 a night off the bench and just kind of be that bucket getter right like a Demar D Rozan type right because he’s similar body type similar size and he’s 66 can operate not shoot the three ball knock down the mid-range um you know create a little bit for others create a bit for himself not a guy I’d want running my offense, but a guy that, you know, again, like I look at him as a guy you slot in alongside a Harper or, you know, Fox or whatever. And it’s just like, hey, when you’re out there, go get buckets, right? You kind of let him be him. Let him kind of do what he did in summer league. Just go generate offense, go knock down a couple shots, make the occasional play, rebound the basketball. Like, that’s one of the things that is a great benefit is that he’s actually a good rebounder, right? He’s not just a bucket getter or anything. He can play some defense, get some steals, he can, you know, he plays both sides of the basketball, right? And he’s a guy that could really kind of make an impact on this team on both sides of the basketball. Um, I think this year he’s going to do it mostly in in the G-League. But again, it’s the first kind of stepping stone, right? Summer league, now you’re in the G-League, then you make the main roster, and then you prove that you’re, you know, you’re one of the top end guys. But it’s a great signing, like I mentioned. Um, I’m really excited to kind of see how this all plays out with him, and and you know, I’m rooting for him, right? see what he ends up doing. But anyway, as always, this is a discussion. The San Antonio Spurs have officially signed David Jones Garcia to a 2way contract. Garcia was a big bright spot for the Spurs in the NBA Summer League and made all first team. Spurs signing Garcia will give them the flexibility to retain him long term.

First!
I was correct. Thank you. I said if the Spurs had not signed him by Tuesday (today), then he wasn't in their plans.
PATSFO is waiting to trade Vassell and Johnson before giving DJG (and Minis) guaranteed contracts. McLaughlin will be traded or released.
Great news! Was waiting for the spurs to sign him. But we are guard heavy…
He's Mario Elie
Cut mclaughin, give Garcia all the run in practice n games
DJG showed that he is a scoring machine, including high percentage from 3-pt distance, which the Spurs need. The 2-way contract gives them a chance to see if his game translates to the NBA. If it does, they’ll MAKE room for him.
Except that you are not familiar with how the Spurs run their G league team and I don’t blame you. The Spurs organization sees almost no difference in training, values, coaching and organizational structure being that both programs are 85 miles apart. You could technically live in SA and commute to Cedar Park daily. I know a lady who travels to New Braunfels from Leander. Well I’m getting too local for this channel. So no it’s not the same but it kinda is. GSG
David Jones as a two-way is the best of both worlds for him and the Spurs. He would not develop sitting on the bench not getting minutes, same as Malkahi and Blake. Playing in the Gleague will allow him to work on his game, defense, ball handling and will give him some spot games when injuries hit, he can play 2 & 3 and some spot 1. Excellent planning
Think about this: Mac McClung is a G-League star and former MVP. He averaged 25.7 points per game last year. But his lack of consistent playmaking and defense has never translated to a full time NBA contract. If David Jones Garcia playmaking and defense translates to the NBA, he will have a chance at getting a full time NBA contract.
The Spurs had the G league minor pros way way Waaaaay B4 everyone else. This not typical farm team scenario. In fact most rookies had to pay their dues in Austin minors or B on the bench. Only seen a lot rookies start or get mins bc of the rebuild. Then the international angles where we met players play pro overseas until ready to play in the NBA.
