Why the Minnesota Timberwolves Are (Rightfully) AVOIDING Ben Simmons | Durant Trade Aftermath
Hello and welcome in to another episode of Lockdown Wolves. Today on the show, why Ben Simmons is not a good fit for the Timber Wolves and he won’t sign with the Minnesota. Also, why I still like Balco Brogden from Minnesota and reacting to the fallout from the Lillard and Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant trades. Some Wolves related stuff there uh specific to those moves that I want to talk about. It’s all come welcome in you are locked on Wolves. You are locked on Timberwolves. Right now, new customers can get $150 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. Happy Wednesday, everybody. Happy hump day. Today on the show, I want to get into a bit of free agency discussion. A couple specific players uh that there’s been a little bit more a little bit more um I don’t know Minnesota chatter about them. Specifically Jake Fischer talking about the possibility of Ben Simmons. Don’t worry, I’ll explain why I hate it. We’ll also talk about Malcolm Brogden who I brought up several times before on the show. And then also uh kind of the fallout from the Damen Lillard returning to Portland signing. um the discussion that the Wolves were really in on him and then also I think the bigger one is is the the reported package that Minnesota was at least considered putting on the table if it wasn’t on the table for Kevin Durant that has now come out now that Bradley Beiel’s out of Phoenix and so is Kevin Durant. So, you know, how just how what did that trade package look like and was it a good idea in the first place for Minnesota? So, I want to get into that a bit related to the Durant stuff. I think it’s still fascinating to kind of look at this alternate path and and I think it also tells us like just um the levels to which Tim Connelly will go to improve this roster, right? And and and the the risks he would be willing to take on potentially. Um but then you know the not getting the extension is a bridge too far for him. So we’ll break all that down later on the show. A lot to get to today. Obviously a big thank you first of all for making Lockdown Wolves your first listen every single day. Of course this show is free and available everywhere. That includes YouTube as well as all of your favorite audio platforms. Wherever you like to listen to podcasts, you can find Lockdown Wolves. You can also watch on the Lockdown Sports Minnesota app on both Roku and Amazon Fire TV. All right, for agency updates. So, I want to start with the Ben Simmons report and this is this is Jake Fischer, right? formerly of um a lot of places uh Yahoo and um I think SI can’t remember where he was previously but currently he’s with Bleacher Report and um writing with uh let’s see this was on a Bleacher Report stream that that Jake Fischer discussed the basically the remaining kind of guard wing market and he talked about the Kings and the Knicks as places that Ben Simmons maybe the most likely destinations for Ben Simmons. He also talked about Russell Westbrook, Malcolm Brogden. But related to Simmons, he he says, this is a Fiser quote. He says, “I personally think Ben Simmons would be interesting in Minnesota, but I haven’t heard that they have interest in him.” So, let’s start there. And I’ll explain why I don’t think Minnesota has any interest in Ben Simmons, nor should they. I think it’s important to first point out Ben Simmons is still a a rotation caliber NBA player. We’ll say it that way. He played 51 games last year, obviously injury, off-c court stuff, 15 games year before that, 42 the year before that. He has not played in more than 58 games since 2018-19. That said, when he plays, he’s still a top flight defender. like his impact is is all defensive team worthy conversation at least, right? Like he’s that good defensively. You look at all the on-off numbers, look at all the stuff that that shows his impact on the defensive end of the floor. And it is very, very real. And it’s in a lot of ways just as good as it was when he was in his prime, which it’s weird to talk about a guy who is turning 29 this year. And uh talking about like way back when he was in his prime five plus years ago, but you know, he didn’t play in the 2122 season, the hold out, the back injury, etc. And then he’s been a completely different player. It’s actually really wild when you look at his basketball reference. Like I everybody knows that he’s been a different player and a lot of stuff has gone on in his life, but man, he was an all-star three straight years. He won after winning rookie of the year in his first year. All defensive first team twice, defensive player of the year, finished fourth one year and second in defensive player of the year voting. Was all NBA third team in his third season and actually finished 12th in MVP voting in his final year in Philadelphia. uh the the 2021 season. So the second COVID shortened season and that was around when we heard all the discussion of could he end up in Minnesota. There was you know the the you know the a couple stretch there where it was like okay is he the most likely superstar for the Wolves to end up with. Gerson Rosas was interested in him, you know, all those reports, like really really good, like a like a top easily top 20, probably a top 15 player for most of that time. And then after the injury and some of the offthe- court stuff and and just, you know, kind of not playing for a variety of reasons, it seems like, now we’re talking about a guy that is still really impactful defensively, but there but there’s no offensive positivity or no nothing positive he’s doing for your offense. Like, he was borderline unplayable for a good Clippers team on the offensive side of the floor down the stretch last year. And it’s the craziest thing because it’s not like he ever shot threes. Like obviously, and this is the reason I’m going to give for why the Wolves wouldn’t be interested in him, but he was never like a floor spacer, but he was a really good point guard and a great passer. The assist rate is in the same neighborhood that it was in Philadelphia, but the turnover rate is astronomical. And he’s not getting to the free throw line anymore. He’s not driving into the paint. He’s contact diverse. I mean, his last year in Philadelphia, his free throw was almost a.5, which means that nearly half the time he was attempting a field goal, he was also getting a free throw for it. almost almost a half free throw attempt per field goal attempt which is just bonkers. And now uh over the last couple years Brooklyn Clippers we’re talking like between a 02 and a24 and last year actually it was a 0.15 free throw rate. So minuscule compared to what it was in Philadelphia. So you don’t get to the line and you turn it over a bunch. It really mitigates the effectiveness of your assist rate and you’re still not shooting threes. So Ben Simmons is a clear net negative offensively and if you’re Minnesota, you can’t add another net. You can’t add another non-shooter, frankly. I mean, they kind of did with Kyle Anderson and it worked to the tune of, you know, eight seed one year or or Yeah, I guess it was eight seed um the the eight loss to Denver one year and then the next year they get to the conference finals. But the offense was never very good. It finished middle of the pack 16 17 in offense. And part of that was any sort of a Kylie Anderson Rudy Go Bear lineup, as good as they were defensively, there were two non-shooters. And that just doesn’t work when you’re trying to create space for Anthony Edwards. And also in today’s NBA, you really can’t play two guys that can’t shoot threes together. And Kyle Anderson was at least like he could like functionally shoot a three-pointer. Ben Simmons does not. Like Ben Simmons hasn’t attempted a three-pointer since 2023, and he attempted two that season. Um the last two years he attempted zero three-pointers in like a total of 70 games, 65 games. Um but it’s not just that. There’s just no outside shooting threat. He he doesn’t shoot outside the paint and he barely ever touches the paint. And the turnover rate on top of that, which is also a function of that, right? If teams know you’re not going to shoot threes and they’re not afraid of you scoring in the paint, they’re going to know exactly what you’re trying to do, and that’s pass. So, it’s it makes your offensive game that much it’s so limited that you’re going to turn the ball over a bunch. I I like he’s still a nice player in short bursts if you can if you could support that. If you’re going to play a smaller lineup and put him out there or you want to play a big lineup with a stretch five, there’s teams that he can fit and he can play a regular season role. I think he’s pretty unplayable in the playoffs because of the reasons I just listed. And I don’t think he fits the Wolves roster because of Rudy Goar. If if the Wolves had traded um we’ll talk about this later, but if Gobar had been traded away in a Kevin Durant trade, I could actually live in a world in which Ben Simmons was the point guard of a team with Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant. Like that’s actually palatable because he raises your floor defensively. You’re playing you get shooting from your five or if it’s Nas and Kevin Durant in the front court and Ben Sim is the only non-shooter on the floor. You can live with that. He can play out of the dunker and and and playmake there. you know, you can you can run stuff for him where he gets catches and can playmake. That actually would make some sense the way the roster is currently constructed with Rudy Gobear. And again, we’ll get back to this. We’ll get back to to the Wolves apparent openness to to trading Gobear and and completely resetting the way they play. Um, actually, let’s do that next. Like, let’s let’s hit that next here um in just a minute. But their openness to doing that like that that could have made some sense with Ben Simmons, but now with Rudy Goar on the roster, you’re not you’re not going to play Ben Simmons with Rudy Gobear and you like you’re completely hamstring yourself if he’s your point guard and and you have any bigs in your rotation. Like if you want to, you know, rotate their minutes so they’re not on the floor together at all, that’s a tough thing to try and manage. It really boxes you in. It’s like an MLB team that has a guy that’s only a DH and doesn’t play anything else and there’s no flexibility. It’d be basically like that. Um, and also I would say like Julius Randle’s obviously a capable three-point shooter, a volume three-point shooter, but teams dare him to shoot. And so the spacing wouldn’t be as good if he’s on the floor with Julius Randle either. And Julius Randle does a lot of what you would want Ben Simmons to do from a playmaking distribution standpoint. Um, you know, for a player that’s not named Anthony Edwards, right? Uh, okay. I want to let’s talk about the Durant stuff next. I I I’m doing a little if you’re watching YouTube a little out of order on the graphic. I think this is a pretty good segue from the way Minnesota was was open to playing um to like let’s let’s talk let’s unpack that a little bit more. Their proposed offer allegedly reportedly I should say uh for Kevin Durant. Let’s talk about that a little bit here next. Okay, I’m skipping to the last thing on the graphic which is talking about the bill trade and in the wake of or I should say the Beal signing. I just realized on my graphic it says it says bill trade bill signing Kevin Durant trade. That’s what it that’s what I want to talk about. Um, and the Wolves part in all that. So, we knew Minnesota had interest in both of those guys. Phoenix was going to break up that duo. Both of those guys wanted out ultimately. Um, you know, I know be took a little longer to make that choice, but like that’s what was going to happen. There was a report that the Timberwolves had expressed interest in the like the actual specifics of the trade. This was I think Brian Winhor. Yeah, it was Brian Winhorse who reported this at ESPN that the Suns and Timberwolves trade package that the Wolves allegedly put together was Rudy Gobar, Dante Dvenenzo, TJ Shannon, and the number 17 pick in the draft, which obviously became Jean Bar. Um, but because Durant said he didn’t want to assign an extension to continue playing in Minnesota, which of course is a whole other thing. We’ve talked, we’ve touched on this, but around the trade deadline, it was reported that he was interested, but it sounds like the team like Phoenix was making it known that he was interested and Kevin Durant himself was not interested. So, um, take that for whatever it’s worth. But for the Wolves, they were like, look, if if he’s not going to sign an extension here, why would we trade Gobar, Devincenzo, and Shannon and the first round pick we have this year for a one-year rental? The only way you would do that is if you wanted to get off of the Gobear contract anyway. And and so here’s here’s where the the the calculus comes in for Tim Connelly. Would say three years of an aging Kevin Durant and whatever they would have then backfilled the roster with be more valuable than Goar Dvenenzo Shannon and what the pick that became Baron in a vacuum. I think that’s debatable. I I do. Um, Durant is still a better player than Rudigar in a vacuum and he’s certainly a better player than Danchenzo or Shannon, but you’re fundamentally changing the way you play if you’re essentially swapping your center. You’re you’re you’re swapping two polar opposite players, Gobear and and Kevin Durant. Now, Durant functionally would have played the the four and Naz Reed would have played the five in Minnesota. And I guess in this scenario, Jo Randle’s still on the Wolves and and well, I guess he wouldn’t be because you would have um Well, actually, no, he would be in this scenario. So, like that’s likely what the front court looks like then for Minnesota is is hey, it’s some combination of Durant, Randall, and Nas. Like maybe they maybe they could I think they only could have kept one of those two. But what you’re doing is you’re swapping out your non-shooter for a big that is a shooter but otherwise isn’t really a big. He’s not going to protect the rim. He’s not going to rebound a ton as far as being a big. He’s still a good defender, but not what he was. Right. So, the only reason that makes sense is if you think we are going to need to pivot this thing eventually anyway. And this makes our offense that much more potent this year. We think we’ll be good enough defensively because again, in this scenario, you uh maybe they probably wouldn’t be able to keep in that scenario, but like you play a little more Jaylen Clark, you whatever. We think the defense is going to be fine. and the offense will be great and perhaps the team’s better in the short run, but in the long run it allows us this this it opens a different window for us. We close the Go Bear window that got us to the conference finals twice and we open up this new window. That is what Minnesota was allegedly open to doing. And on top of that, losing TJ Shannon, who who I think if that’s the window you’re opening, like, and I’m sure Phoenix wanted TJ Shannon, but if Minnesota could have included almost anybody else, obviously not Jay McDaniels or Anthony Edwards, but if they could have included I would have traded Rob Dillingham before Terrence Shannon. And I know that was one of the names tossed around, but if the Wolves were going to go all like play fast, play small, um Durant’s big and Gobear’s gone, you want TJ Shannon cuz he’s one of your few like he’s a two-way guy, great in the open floor, volume, distance, three-point shooter. You’d want that guy on the team and you’d probably want a bigger point guard like I talked about last segment. Maybe in that scenario, like this is a completely alternate universe now. But say Gob Bear’s gone and Durant’s in and and you get to keep TJ Shannon, you trade Dillingham, you sign Ben Simmons. So now your point guard is is a combination of Mike Connley and uh and Ben Simmons. You still have Ant, you have Durant, you have one of Naz or Randall and um you know it’s just a completely different team at that point and you’re you’re essentially inverting what Minnesota has now which is a non-shooter at the five and go Bear and a little light at the one but you can’t add another non-shooter like a Ben Simmons. So it’s it’s just a fascinating kind of alternate track that this thing could have could have been on. And then ultimately when Phoenix said, “Well, no, you know,” or or when Durant’s camp said, “Look, we’re not going to sign an extension.” Then Minnesota was like, “Well, of course that’s not worth one year. That’s not worth a rental.” Prime Kevin Durant have that conversation. You would still have that conversation. Like, you know, like the Prime Kawi thing, right? What Kawhi Leonard did when he went to Toronto. That’s what Toronto did was they’re like, “Well, we want to win a title.” And it worked out for them. Lots of things had to go right, but it worked out for them. And then he was gone. Could like prime Kevin Durant another conversation. would you get out of the rest of Gobar’s contract which is now reasonable but only three more years and include some real assets plus Gobear is still a good player if you think prime Durant lifts you to a title this year probably that’s probably something you do and then you hope against hope you can maybe convince him to sign an extension over the course of the season you win a title whatever and he wants to come back but not 37y old or whatever he is Kevin Durant like that doesn’t make sense for one year and so Minnesota rightfully said no we’re doing this. Just fascinating though that it was a real consideration for the Wolves that that was the trade package. When I first looked at the possibility of Minnesota getting Durant, in my mind, it was some sort of signing trade. Some like you’re not going to give up that much for him. But this was a real trade package that they looked at. That’s a lot of dudes for a really old player who’s not won at a high level in a little while, but still is a really good player. just fascinating to to to to think about how this thing could have played out. And ultimately Tim Connelly and I would not describe Tim Connelly as risk averse. He weighed his options and he was like look standing Pat a team that is going to gel and this is year two of Randall playing with both Ant and Rudy Gobear. this team should naturally progress and getting a year older and more experienced guys like TJ like could there be some regression from going from Nik Alexander Walker to some of these young wings yes but they also those guys should be better than they were last year right like that’s the whole idea is you’re you got them ready over the course of last season so um all that calculus Tim Connley was like all right we’ll stand pat like this is the best option for us right now and I agree with it wholeheartedly if that was the package I 100% agree with what Tim Connelly landed on. Okay, let’s go back and talk a little bit about other free agents, specifically Malcolm Brogden who I’ve talked about before. I want to talk a little bit about the Dame stuff as well. Uh and uh that’s how we’ll we’ll close out today’s show. All right. So, rewinding to the Jake Fischer comment comments about uh Ben Simmons. The other guys he listed were Russell Westbrook and um Malcolm Brogden. I’m not going to spend any time on Russ. Obvious reasons. In fact, all the stuff I said about Ben Simmons, except for he is not a good shooter. Like Russ makes no sense in Minnesota. um personal like aversion to watching Russell Westbrook at this stage in his career. Setting try setting that aside besides the aesthetics of it, the fit there isn’t the fit anyway. I I know Minnesota want like there’s an argument to be made for instant offense off the bench. Well, if you want that it’s Rob Dillingham, it’s Nas Reed. It’s somebody that can actually shoot that has some upside. It’s not a Russell Westbrook who’s also like I know he competed defensively for Denver and and was bet certainly better than I think certainly I and I think many expected uh late in the season for them. Doesn’t make any sense. And Fischer is not saying it does. He lists those three. Simmons, Westbrook, Brogden and says the Kings are in on potentially all of them. and that he he said as an aside that Simmons he thinks Simmons would be interested in Minnesota and then or sim sorry Simmons would be interesting in Minnesota. He also reported that Minnesota is one of the teams along with the Kings, the Pelicans, the Warriors as potential landing spots for Malcolm Brogden, who I’ve talked about at length. I know I saw some people in the comments on YouTube talking about, you know, Brogden isn’t what he was in Boston. Yeah, I know that. I I’m aware. I know how many games he did and didn’t play the last couple years, but it doesn’t mean he’s just not a good basketball player at all anymore. Remember, Minnesota does not have a backup point guard. They’re relying on a trio of secondyear guys essentially, and I’m calling I’m lumping Jaylen Clark in with TJ Shannon, Rob Dillingham, even though he’s technically going to be in his third professional season, but second on the floor. um having a veteran who you have as an option and somebody who can run the offense and somebody who is a good defender and was a great defender and I think still could be great maybe a little strong. Um I think still could be a functional team defender. I think there’s value to that and I do understand there’s hesitation in the fan base for giving Chris Finch a veteran to lean on. give him another quote unquote excuse to not play Rob Dillingham. Sure, I I get that. I understand apprehension there, but the name of the game is having as many good players as you can. That’s that, you know, in roster balance, right? Like, and the Wolves have a unbalanced roster right now. Um, and they don’t have a lot of options. I mean, god forbid, like I know Mike Connley’s very long in the tooth, but god forbid he gets hurt in training camp. Now, what? Like you can’t only have Rob Dillingham and Anthony Edwards playing point guard, right? Like you need somebody else. So I think given all the options, Brogden makes a ton of sense. Now if like I I said this before, the guys Brogden and guys like him, not just point guards, the choice they have now is like they’re essentially going to make the same money everywhere. Nobody’s got cap space. So, they could go sign with a team like the Kings or the Pelicans and play well enough and then get traded or bought out and go join a contender partway through the season and maybe they can get a little more money depending on cap situations. I don’t know about the Kings and Pelicans specifically. Or you go to a team like the Timber, the Warriors, and take the vet minimum and maybe not have as defined of a role, but know that those teams are going to win and you know like that that’s just where you are all season. You’re probably not going to get moved and it makes sense. So, if I’m looking at that list and I’m Malcolm Brogton, it’s the Warriors or the Timberwolves and and you know, what’s what’s the role in either of those places? And and for Minnesota, like maybe they aren’t able to define to him what that role would be because they do have Dillian Ham and TJ Shannon and Jaylen Clark and and and they’re still trying to kind of figure out what that rotation is going to look like. But I still like the Brogden option. I think it makes a lot of sense and it sounds like the Timberwolves agree and there that’s that’s a name I I mentioned early in the free agency process is someone I thought made sensitive at minimum for Minnesota. I still think what he did and can still likely do fits with what Minnesota’s looking for really really well. Quickly the Dame Lillard stuff. Um great story. Like I don’t know. I’m a sucker for for a return. Like obviously uh Kevin Durant Ricky Rubio returns for the Timberwolves. like love it. Um Dame goes back to to Portland and it was reported around that same time. I’m going to see if I can find the actual quote here. Uh where there’s a quote about how Minnesota is one of the teams that he seriously considered. It was Minnesota and it was Boston. Uh I lost it, but Minnesota and the Celtics were the two teams that uh that Dame Lillard seriously considered going to instead of going back to Portland. and he held phone calls with both the Timberwolves and with the Blazers to Here we go. Um, this was Brian Rob of Mass Live. Uh, and Sham Shirania had a discussion and Sham Shirania said over a dozen teams made minimum and mid-level exception offers to Dame. Over a dozen. Two teams that he really considered, the Celtics and the Timberwolves. He held calls with both teams at different points. But to be in Portland back home with his three young kids was by far the most important factor in his return to the Trailblazers and uh Boston could only offer the mid level and uh they would have had to make other moves to get below the second apron. Similar situation in Minnesota obviously. Um so great that the Wolves are interested makes sense. He obviously would would have uh elevated the offensive ceiling and yes there would have been defensive issues but again Mike Conley is still a better defender than Dave Lillard obviously but uh Connley’s not a plus defender at this point and he gets hunted. So if you’re going to get hunted you’d rather have some upside offensively somebody who can who can still and of course this would have been a two years for now thing as well because of the injury the Achilles. So I guess Connley’s probably retired after this year anyway. He’s he’s not on our contract after this year. So in two years, Lillard becomes the starting point guard and that would have been the appeal, right? And now he gets to be in Portland for the year, rehab around his family, have the reunion moment in Portland. So it all makes sense for Damen Lillard. But if he’d gone to Minnesota, it would have made sense too in that he would have been handed a starting job on a team that would have designed a championship in two years. So I like and also by the way that would have meant that Dillingham either is traded or is the primary backup to Liard and how much tread does Lillard ultimately have on the tires three four years down the road anyway, right? So I understand the Wolves interest in him and I think that that made a lot of sense. I also understand why they made the choice to go back to Portland. It all checks out for me. Um, we’re of course going to keep a pulse on what the Timberwolves do at the final standard roster spots and the final two-way spot. As we’ve talked about quite a bit on the show already, uh, you know, I I think it’s it’s a big and it’s a guard in some order. And Brogden’s one of the names, you know, if we’re looking at bigs, we’re talking Precious Aua, we’re talking Chris Buché, guys like that that can give you some professional backup big minutes in the Luca Garza role. Those are things we’ll talk a bit more. or it’s been a couple weeks since we really got in on those guys. So, probably do a bit more profiles on them later in the week as we get you ready here for the rest of the offseason. A reminder, we are still daily throughout July. Simmons should never have been in the league to begin with
I have a hard time believing we would give up all that for Durant. Could it have been a favor to phx to raise the price for a better return or a strategy to try and force other teams to drain future assets for a theoretically declining player?
