As Hot Grizz Summer concludes, Jaylen Wells sits out/How Edey and KCP fit in the Locked On Top 100

We are happy to call this little corner of the internet our home, Lockdown Grizzlies. And I am happy to say that I told you so. And I I feel like I’ve been doing this more lately, and I apologize for that. First and foremost, I want to get that off my my chest here because nobody likes a a person that brags, right? A braggard. I try not to be that guy. I’m fairly humble. When you think Joe Mullax, first and foremost, you think handsome, right? You think ravishing good looks. And then beyond that, just barely by the skin of my teeth, you think basketball soant, right? Ruggedly charming. Clearly, uh, it’s it’s an oversight that the Memphis Grizzlies or any NBA franchise has not brought me in for at least a consultant role to this point. But once you get past all of those, you know, humble moments of of inner reflection. I try not to be that guy except for when I’m that guy every time because people like to point out all the times I’m wrong. And in fairness, I am wrong sometimes. I said that Jaylen Wells was playing well enough and was doing enough that he didn’t need to play any more summer league basketball. I had seen enough. And sure enough, the Memphis Grizzlies agreed to Michael after Michael C on his ex account posted before the game against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night. Grizzly spokesperson says that Jaylen Wells will no longer play in Summer League. He doesn’t need to. I had seen enough. Maybe you hadn’t seen enough, dear listener, dear viewer, but I had seen enough. I had seen enough from Jaylen Wells in terms of what the Grizzlies need for him to be when he’s playing next to J Morant and Jiren Jackson Jr., two guys that we talked a lot about on yesterday’s show. Two guys we’ll talk about more towards the end of this program today. Jaylen Wells is going to be a starter on this team. And Jaylen Wells is going to be a significant contributor to this team on both ends of the floor. Why risk that in a meaningless, and I do want to stress meaningless summer league basketball game? It was meaningless. Does it suck that the Grizzlies lost 92 to 88? Yeah, I guess you want the team to win. Is it a bummer that the Grizzlies aren’t going to be going to the playoffs or whatever it’s called for summer league? I guess it was cool that they made the finals last year. I’m not going to act like it wasn’t cool. All right, it was. But it’s also nowhere near the end of the world that Memphis has one more game coming up in the next day or two and then that’s it. I’m okay with that and you should be too. First off, summer league is way too long. Secondly, summer league is borderline meaningless. And especially once you have players that have cemented themselves as too good for summer league, get them out of dodge. Now, if you watched the summer league game on Thursday, you would understand why GG Jackson is still playing because GG Jackson in his current form is not too good for summer league. Guess who had zero assists again? GG Jackson. Zero assists. for GG Jackson in 24 minutes of play. Meshack had four assists. Javon Small had five assists. Cam Spencer had two assists. Zero assists for Gigi Jackson. I don’t care that Gigi didn’t make a three. That doesn’t bother me. I don’t care that Gigi only had four rebounds in 24 minutes of play. That doesn’t bother me either. It doesn’t bother me that Small and Meshak both outrebounded Gigi. What bothers me is the lack of assists and creation off the dribble for others because that is something that GG’s going to be have have to do if he’s going to contribute in a meaningful way at the end of the rotation for the Memphis Grizzlies this coming season. It doesn’t bother me that Cam Spencer shot 412 from beyond the ark and 6 for 17 overall. I could care less about that. I really could. What bothers me is that he had four turnovers to two assists. That’s a 2 to1 ratio in the opposite direction. Technically, one to two, one assist for every two turnovers. The decision-making isn’t there for somebody that you would want to be that fifth guard behind Jaw and Jaylen Wells and Scotty Pippen Jr. and Ty Jerome. It’s not there right now. They need the reps. Meshach is fighting for a two-way contract. He needs the reps. Javon Small is on a two-way contract, but you have to see what you’ve got in the young man. And truth be told, I thought he had the best game of all of these Grizzlies players. Five assists, one turnover in 24 minutes of play. three for seven from the on the arc, 17 points on 12 shots, four for five from the charity stripe, five assists, five rebounds. Small was the best player for Memphis against Atlanta in that summer league game, but he should continue to play. Absolutely should continue to play. Tyler Burton, who should be fighting for a two-way contract, should continue to play. and the remainder of the Grizzlies roster should continue to play because to a variety level variet variety of levels, they’re all still trying to prove something or at least maximize as much as you can in the meaningless rep that is a summer league exhibition game. maximizing those live minutes and continuing to instill the culture trying to use that all makes all the sense in the world and I support it. Jaylen Wells already does all those things. I don’t need Jaylen Wells out there trying to run the point because that’s not what he’s going to do for the Memphis Grizzlies. That’s why Ty Ver exists. That’s why Scotty Pippen Jr. exists. I don’t need Jaylen Wells going out there trying to score 30 points a night just trying to be a bucket in theory. That’s why GG Jackson exists, right? Deichel talks about that all the time. We know that Gigi can score. We’ve seen it time and again even in his young NBA career. We know he has that skill set. Haven’t seen GI create offense for himself and others off the dribble consistently enough, especially for others. We’re not seeing it enough now. That’s concerning. He’s shown flashes in the summer league and that’s a positive, but you want to see more than just flashes, which is why he should keep playing. You’d love to see Cam Spencer continue to get that run. Jaylen Wells doesn’t need that run. Jaylen Wells knows who he is within this Grizzlies organization. He understands the assignment and Jaylen Wells is going to be a meaningful contributor. Even if he’s not a starter, he will be. Even if you you’re one of those people that thinks he shouldn’t be, okay, he’s the sixth man now. He’s getting 20 to 24 minutes off the bench. He’s going to start because that’s how good he is. He’s the fourth best player on the team like we talked about yesterday. I firmly believe that. And Wells displayed the tenacity, the focus, the fortitude, all the things that you’d want from somebody like him. And if your concern with Wells really is athleticism, is playing in summer league basketball going to fix that? The answer to that question, dear listener, dear viewer, is a resounding no. Let me know how you’re feeling going into the end of summer league. How you’re feeling about Jaylen Wells getting the shutdown, Memphis losing to the Hawks. I could care less about them losing to the Hawks. I’m glad that they’re going to keep playing some of these guys going down the stretch. And I’m glad that Jaylen Wells is done. Go focus on your off seasonason, young man. Work on that game. As the kids say, get back in the lab. When we come back here on Lockdown Grizzlies, we are going to talk about the lockdown top 100. I have a couple more names to unveil. Spoiler alert, you probably can already kind of tell who those names are, but you don’t necessarily know the order yet. Zach 80, Contavus Cowell Pope. We’ll talk about them both coming up next here on Lockdown Grizzlies. Today’s episode of Lockdown Grizzlies is brought to you by Game Time. So, yesterday I introduced this idea of the locked NBA top 100, right? The Ringer has a list. ESPN has a list. We’re big enough at Locked on Podcast Network and we can have our own list. And darn it, that’s exactly what we’re working on as we speak. We are cultivating, we’re processing the data, we’re analyzing the numbers, and we are carefully crafting our list of the top 100 players in the NBA. And yesterday, I talked about my top five. I talked about John Morant being number one. And that inspired pretty solid debate in the comments on YouTube in particular. Jaw versus Jiren. The greatest ability is availability. That was pointed out a couple of times. I’ve said that a time or two. So, it’s a little bit hypocritical. I don’t disagree, but again, like I said yesterday, I saw enough of the old Jaw in the end of this past season that I’m comfortable putting Jaw in front of Jiren. But it ain’t by much. It ain’t by much. in the ringer who I mentioned a moment ago in their list they have Jiren has better than Jaw currently on their top 100 list that was updated I think last on June 4th. So if you think Jiren is better than Jaw at this time you’re not going to get much of an argument against it from me. But this is my list after talking with Deco Cole and Jaw was one. Jerham was two. Remember Santi Alama was three. We’ll talk more about Santi here in a moment. Number four was Jaylen Wells. the previously mentioned Jaylen Wells, the recently shut down from summer league, Jaylen Wells. And then number five was Ty Jerome. And yes, Ty Jerome has not played a minute of Memphis Grizzlies basketball yet, but I went with Ty Jerome at number five. That puts us at the last two. Now, I want to stress, do I expect the Memphis Grizzlies to have seven players in the top 100 of the NBA? No, I do not. I’ll talk about how many I do expect them to have at the end of the program today. Am I going to put seven names because I’m able to and I like talking about the Memphis Grizzlies and why they’re good. Yes, I am going to do that. And that leads me to number six. And I went with Zack Edy at number six on my seven best Grizzlies. And the reason for that is twofold. one. Edy did have a good season despite what good buddy of mine Matt Moore at HBS or at HB basketball on X host of the locked on NBA podcast locked on Nuggets a great substack HP basketball all that great stuff. Matt Moore does not like Zack Edit. I like Zahediti and I see Zakiti at 7 foot4, 290 pounds as a valuable piece to what Memphis is trying to do moving forward. That bigbodied screen setter that can rebound and defend and do a lot of different things as an elite role playing big. Zach Giddy’s pretty close to that already, especially in those specific spaces of screen setting of rebounding, especially offensive rebounding. He has aspects of his game that haven’t been tapped into yet, right? Former twotime Nasmouth player of the year in college basketball. There are things that he is capable of on a basketball court that the Memphis Grizzlies coaching staff this past season was not able to fully tap into. So, I think in his sophomore season, we’ll see even better Zack Edy from Zack Edy. And that’s a good thing because the Grizzlies are going to need a better Zack Edy if they’re going to contend in the Western Conference, compete in the Western Conference. But Zack Edy is already really strong as a screen setter, as a force in and around the paint. You have to respect him. Doesn’t mean he’s unstoppable because he’s not. This isn’t college basketball. There’s plenty of really athletic big guys that roam the NBA that could potentially give Zakiti trouble. But to act like Zakiti is not worthy of NBA rotation minutes is asinine and Matt and a lot of others tend to be in this polarizing situation on that side of the coin. Me I think he’s absolutely going to be a starter for the Memphis Grizzlies and I think that he’s going to be a starter for them for the foreseeable future because what does Zach Edy do well? He sets screens. He rebounds. He does winning basketball things that Memphis needs to be done alongside Jiren and Jaw. If you have a weaker rebounding and screen setting for and Jiren, which the Grizzlies do indeed have, you need a big that is able to supplement and expand upon those skills. Zakiti does that. So, Zach is number six for me. Number seven, Contavius Cwell Pope. Honorable mention to Scotty Pippen Jr. I think you could have made an argument for Scotty here, but I went KCP. And the reason that I went KCP is I am a believer in the value of veteran leadership and I’m a believer in the value of championship pedigree. Now, I am not trying to say that anybody on the Oklahoma City Thunder that won a title should automatically be valued more just because they were a part of the journey of Shay Gildas Alexander, Chad Homegrren, JDub, and the rest of the OKC Thunder. I am saying that if you remember that Denver Nuggets championship run, Contavius Cowwell Pope played a pretty large role in it. And I am saying that when you look at what he did with the Orlando Magic this past season, you have to weigh it with a grain of salt because there was no true point guard facilitator creating offensive opportunities. In Denver, the guy’s name is Nicola Joic, the best basketball player on the planet. And kudos to SGA. It’s probably closer than it has been in a couple years, but Joic is still the best. And he’s a point center for the Denver Nuggets. if you ever watched Denver play. So, one of the very best offensive creators perhaps in the history of basketball was a guy helping him out there. That certainly didn’t exist in Orlando. And Jokic doesn’t play for the Memphis Grizzlies, but John Mar does. And John Morant has the capacity to be a better creator than anybody that the Orlando Magic had this past season. If that wasn’t true, they wouldn’t have given up what they gave up for Desmond Bane. they wouldn’t have prioritized Taius Jones coming in and being a member of the organization. The Magic desperately needed lead guard play. So, John Mar’s going to be an upgrade for KCP. And KCP is still a pretty stout defender. He still has the length. He still has that physical strength. He still has that mindset. and he has the experience to be a valuable mentor. Perhaps not to John Morance or Jiren Jackson Jr., but sure as heck to Jaylen Wells, sure as heck to Cedric Coward, sure as heck to GI Jackson, Vince Williams Jr., these other younger Memphis Grizzlies wings and players that are going to be counted on at some point. Whether it is this season or whether it is seasons down the road when Contavius Cowwell Pope may no longer be dawning the blue of Beiel Street, this guy is going to leave his mark on this team and he is going to see the opportunity that the Memphis Grizzlies have and he is going to do his best to maximize it. And I believe in the value of having been there, done that, and the tangible confidence that comes along with the truth that you have actually done it before. So, Scotty Pippen Jr. had a heck of a series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He deserves all the credit in the world for that. And I do think that Scotty is going to be a key component of this Grizzlies rotation this coming season. However, Intavius Cowwell Pope, even though again hasn’t played a minute of basketball for the Memphis Grizzlies just yet, he is going to be somebody that defends. He’s going to be somebody that takes and hopefully makes threes and because of Jiren and Jaw, again, the whole point of this conversation now, do the players that are brought in help amplify what Morant and Jackson Jr. bring to the table? KCP does that in a variety of levels, and because of that, he’s number seven on my list. So John Morant one, Jiren Jackson two, Santi Alama three, Jaylen Wells four, Ty Jerome five, six is Zack Edy, seven is Contavius Cowwell Pope. Those are the seven names that we here at Lockdown Grizzlies have submitted for consideration from our colleagues over at Lockdown NBA. But will Memphis get all of those names actually on the list? Certainly not. How many will make the list? I tackle that question to close out our Friday episode of Lockdown Grizzly. Stick around. Closing out today’s episode of Lockdown Grizzlies on this Friday. Friday. Got to get them on a Friday. I have seven names that I’ve submitted. Morant Jackson Jr. Aldama Wells Jerome Edy Cwell Pope no chance in htouble hockey sticks all seven of those names make the top 100 right how many of them actually will make the top 100 it’s going to sound like a copout because it’s the easiest answer but it’s the truth it’s going to be two it’s going to be John Morant and it’s going to be Jiren Jackson Jr. Now, what order will those two be in? I’ve g I’ve given my argument, and it seems like a majority of you in the comments, at least on YouTube, agree with me that John Morant should be ranked in front of Jiren Jackson Jr., but I’m fascinated to see how my colleagues, our colleagues alongside Demich Cole, how they perceive the Jaw versus Jiren debate because Jiren is the player that was most recently in the mix for all NBA honors. John Morant was not that guy. Jiren Jackson Jr. is the guy that just signed a almost an almost max contract deal. John Morant has been in and out of the limelight over the last couple of seasons for a variety of reasons. So, nationally, I think there’s a decent chance that Jiren Jackson Jr. will get more love from our voting panels than John Morant. That’s shortsighted. As I’ve talked about, John Morant, when he’s on the court, when he’s available, he is the guy for the Memphis Grizzlies. If he’s not able to be that guy, no disrespect to Jiren Jackson Jr., nothing else matters. John Morant has to be the one that is stirring the drink. Jiren as a Robin number two, totally on board with. And he’s paid like that because he should be. John Morant has to be your superstar if the Grizzlies are going to be a playoff team. If Santi Dama is number three, is Santi Al Dama better than Dylan Brooks? Probably not. Is Santi Dama better than Mitchell Robinson of the New York Knicks? Probably not. Is Santi Dama better than Bradley Beal, the Los Angeles Clippers now? Maybe so. But according to the ringer, Bradley Beal’s number 100. So, if Santi is to squeak in at the end of this list, Jiren and Jaw will be top 25 to 35 players, right? Maybe a little bit less. If it’s a little bit less, I’m going to lose my mind on a future episode of Lockdown Grizzlies. Should be top 35 or so players in the NBA. Those two guys, but I think it’s highly likely Memphis doesn’t get another name on that list. Y Santi Alama for the growth that he showed this past season. A career-high in rebounds, a career-high in assists, three-point shooting. He had a great season in a contract year and he got paid for it. But Isanti as a reserve big, he’ll probably be a starter to start the season. But is Santi is someone who in his ideal role with this Grizzlies roster, the way it’s constructed, a 25 or so minute a night, sixth man big? Is Santi one of the top 100 players in the NBA? I think he’s a tweener. I think he’s in the mix. I would feel a heck of a lot better about saying yes, he is one of the top 100 players in the NBA if he were a better defender. But you and I both know that he is not the best offender on the planet. Desmond Bane made that very clear in a uh bench interaction earlier this year. Important to point out despite their argument in that situation, Santi Alama recently got married. Kudos to Santi and his beautiful bride. Desmond Bane was at the wedding. So they’re friends. Everything’s fine. People get heated and argue in competitive environments all the time, right? But Santi is not the best defender. And to be honest with you, I would not classify Santi as a tryhard. We’ve called Desmond Bane a tryhard. He even called Luke Canard a tryhard. Would you say Santi is a tryhard defensively? I wouldn’t. Is he a tryhard in terms of rebounds? Yeah. Compared to Jiren Jackson Jr. Absolutely. Is Santi a tryhard offensively? Yes. And I think that what makes him a tweener in this conversation of being a top 100 player in the league is that offensive versatility at his size. He is a three-level scorer at 6’11. You don’t have a ton of that in the NBA. You have more of it than you’ve ever had, but there’s still not a ton of it. So, you heard Detroit and other teams potentially being interested in Santi if Memphis was not going to resign him or didn’t want to bring him back. Obviously, the Grizzlies did. They prioritized that. That was something that was a focus of the Grizzlies because they understand what Santi brings to the table, especially offensively. opposing franchises see it too. So is it possible that Santi if this was the top 125 players in the NBA? Would Santi be on that list? Probably. But this is top 100. And I think that Santi Alama is going to be on the outside looking in. I would love to be wrong about that because I love Santi Alama and I think that he has a skill set that Memphis desperately needs. him and Ty Jerome on the same court to put together is going to give me defensive nightmares in a bad way and offensive nightmares in a good way. I think they’re going to provide a lot of challenges for opposing teams. But is Santi’s defensive liability enough to keep him off of our top 100 list when it comes out later on this summer? Probably. So, so I think you’re going to have Jiren. I think you’re going to have Jaw. You’re going to have two representatives for the Memphis Grizzlies on this list. what the order is for those two and where they fall. I’m sure we will talk about more on a future edition of Lockdown Grizzlies. Thank you so much for being with me on this installment of Lockdown Grizzlies. It is much appreciated. The next time that we’re all together, it will be Monday. Summer league will have mercifully ended and I will talk about an overall 40,000 foot view of the summer league experience watching this team to Iselo as a head coach and look ahead to what comes next. what these guys need to specifically work on in their games as the off seasonason fully engulfs the National Basketball Association. 1. Jaylen Wells starting this year is further confirmation that they aren't serious and Kleiman is asleep at the wheel! Im praying Coward eventually takes his spot as a starter. Wells can come off the bench!

  2. Edey isn’t even top 200.. and now that there are more and more players over 7’ he won’t be special.. guys like Moses Brown make him a non factor.. Certain teams wouldn’t have even allowed Edey to play for them if he is showing that he is new to basketball on a nightly basis

  3. Edey skin might be the only thing that keeps him from Tacko Fall outcomes.. definitely won’t be his play.. that’s his twin of all players in league history

  4. Edey so lucky.. Clingan Missi Ware are all clearly better than him but they have to earn it and we just bend our franchise backwards are ruin our star point guards playstyle to accommodate Ed Edd and Edey ball

  5. Edey is an unreal defensive liability against anyone with speed or his size.. bro isn’t better tha Luka Garza fr.. but this the same team starting Lamar Stevens in March

  6. If Edey could catch while in the air and was also able to dunk with 1 hand… he would be a top 20 player but as it stands he’s not close to top 100. Just too clumsy and awkward

  7. Foolish Grizzlies always thinking their role players are better than everyone else’s.. what has Edey done except getting packed by point guards.. he’s not “the bigger Zubac”

  8. @Unconvinced1 ZACH EDEY FIRST TEAM ALL ROOKIE FIRST ROOKIE WITH BAC Kto BACK 20 rebound games since shaq go somewhere else with the hate bro he’s a rookie and much better than u think he is. No one wants to hear these bs comments talking down on Memphis players EVERY SINGLE VIDEO

  9. I can't wait to see Cedric coward make his nba debut in the regular season i believe him and jaren will work well together

  10. Mullinax sounds a lot like the U of Tennessee fans who can't get over their college hate of Zach Edey, who was instrumental in several big Tennessee losses (he's just tall, he's a foul merchant, he only shoots inside shots, or any other number of absolutely insane takes). The smart Tennessee fans welcome him because they know that this guy is a no ego, team first player who will work tirelessly to make his team better, and his team is NO LONGER Purdue, it's the Memphis Grizzlies (unless the haters get their idiotic way). But the DUMB Tennessee fan simply cannot get over their bias, so EVERYTHING Edey does well is downplayed (don't compare him to Shaq, the geniuses KNOW Shaq, Shaq is a friend of theirs, and Edey is NO Shaq blah blah blah). So don't tell them about back to back 20 rebound games, they don't want to hear it, Edey is not shooting 8 threes a game and hitting 50 percent. Don't point out Edey blocking Steph Currys shot, they want to point out that if Golden State decides to run their All World player at Edey all day, focusing on that as their main offensive strategy, Edey will get beaten by their all world guard. Of course, if GS ran Curry at ANOTHER player all game, then THAT player would get beaten often, but don't tell the haters, they just want to hate and will twist any stat they can to make their flawed point. These commentators with opinions like Mullinax most of the time have NO ABILITY whatsoever to judge talent. They just like flashy things. "Ewww look at that poster dunk. Oh my, look at the spin move step back euro step three pointer from ten foot behind the arc. Rebounds? boring! plus minus? too hard to understand and analyze. So meaningless!! Did you see that opponent beat his man but then turn around when Edey was near the basket? He just changed his mind, had NOTHING to do with Edey. Edey sucks. I want my mama.". The good thing is that the people who DO evaluate talent (like the guys who drafted TWO Rookies of the Year, TWICE), seem to understand the talent that have and apparently don't listen, AT ALL, to the childish analysts who just want "shiny things" (long, athletic, explosive…. basketball talent optional). Lucky for Wells he IS a shiny thing. Aldama? Not so lucky. Edey? Not so lucky. Good thing we also get DaMichael on this podcast. When Joe starts trash talking Edey you can see his co-host practically roll his eyes and grimace. DEFINITELY a better judge of talent, and not at all an Edey hater, even though he's a big U of Tennessee fan. Because he's mainly a MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES fan, and he knows that Edey can definitely develop into a huge (literally) asset for the team. Hey Joe. Your boy Steven Adams led the NBA in "per 36" Offensive Rebounds. Zach Edey was 2nd . As a Rookie. At a LOT lower cost. I'm sure that's unimportant.

  11. 1. Mashack is Tony Allen with a 3 point stroke. 2. I'm not sure Cam Spencer will be effective against a defensive oriented team. I wish he were quicker. 3. Small plays large but he'll have to battle Pippen Jr. for tiny backup point guard minutes. 😉

  12. Joe saying it’s short sighted when he clearly you the one short sighted. What has the Grizzlies done with Ja playing that way? Ja is a liability outside of 10 feet and on defense what makes him better? 😂😂 You can’t even explain and have to avoid the conversation lol. Ja has to relay heavily on players like Adams to score and assists which should be a knock. You have to lose Desmond Bane to put defenders around Ja because he’s one of the biggest weak links on the team from defensive standpoint. I got an idea you make Jaren flaws and I make Ja flaws and let’s see who has more 😂😂. Also let’s detail why it’s a flaw and see if we can pass it off for now. You know how yall get on Jaren for can’t passing out the double team even though he been a feature piece of the offense two years and still learning like all stars. Let’s do it because yall love to talk about Jaren flaws doing the same moves but not Ja doing the same screen getting into traffic jumping with nowhere to go and putting up a bad shot or pass 😂😂. Or how Ja gets best off the dribble a lot cause of stress on the back line defense 😂😂. If Jaren is not a better than basketball skills means nothing
