Boston Celtics Trade Targets To Improve Frontcourt | Celtics Rumors

The Boston Celtics lost to the Miami Heat in a summer league game this year and there is nothing I hate more than losing to the Miami Heat. Well, this month chat sports the Heat report, they are beating our ass. The most likes they’ve gotten on a video this month is a cool 513. We have only gotten 369 on a video in the month of July. Change that. Go down below, hit that thumbs up icon so we can beat the heat report this hot month. What’s going on, Green Teams? You’re watching Celtics Today by Chat Sports. I am your host, Tyler Smith, and on today’s show, I had to just take matters into my own hands a little bit and address the biggest elephant in the Celtics room, and that is that this front court is absolutely atrocious. So, we’re going to go over three trade targets to bolster the Celtics front court at that four and five spot. Because right now, I shield your eyes or I guess look ahead at what’s going to be on the floor down low for Boston this year. Uh it ain’t pretty. George Niang, Luca Garza, Nemius Kada, Xavier Tilman, Amari Williams. George Niang is the best player in this group. George Niang also I wouldn’t really consider a like front court piece because one, he kind of operates on the perimeter and two, he couldn’t defend a tree. So, he’s not really like the kind of guy I’m thinking could battle down low and defend some of these bigs in the NBA. That’s really not his archetype whatsoever. He’s going to be that outside shooter and and kind of getting the getting the head of other opponents. That’s kind of the role that he plays in this league. But, who knows if he’ll even be on the roster midway through the season. Luca Garza, you take a flyer on him. Didn’t get much run over in Minnesota through in his short career so far, but uh he expects to be a pretty solid offensive piece. Got to work on the mobility and the defense there. Nimas Kada I have my issues with. He is, you know, your typical round the rim big rim protector can rebound a little bit, but the hands aren’t the best and the overall offensive IQ hasn’t really developed there just yet for Kada. Xavier Tilman, ah, I don’t really know. He locked up Luca Donic for a couple of possessions in that NBA final. Shout out to my guy producer Coupe, uh, who I’m sure watched all those plays back and forth, but outside of that, he’s been a non-factor for Boston. Quite frankly, seems out of shape for the most part, and who knows how much tech he’ll be getting this season. And then Amari Williams, the second round pick. Like, who knows? He’s a rookie. Didn’t even get that much burn in summer league. And then that brings me to this point since the year the calendars, the computers shifted to the 21st century. This might be the worst front court of all time. I’m not joking. This might be the worst front court that has ever been trotted out. As it’s definitely the worst front court that’s ever been trotted out by a team that’s a year removed from winning an NBA title. That is for damn sure. Uh this this front court needs to be improved. Especially if the Celtics are, you know, believing in what Brad Stevens has been saying to the media that they want to be competitive in a wide openen Eastern Conference this year, uh they’re going to have to make an improvement down low or they’re just going to get run out of the gym and get cooked on the inside, which has been kind of an issue for them in the past as well. Without further ado, though, let’s get into the front court trade targets for Boston. We’re starting out with an absolute homer and that is Damontest Sabonis over with the Sacramento Kings. And I know many of you guys who probably watch Sabonis on a regular basis are probably cringing a little bit because he’s not the best overall defender, but let’s be honest, the Celtics need another couple of bucket getters on this squad after getting rid of Chris Desporzingis and Drew Holiday. And you know, they’re lacking in some of those areas right now. And obviously this season, they’ll be without JT. We know that Sabonis can put the ball in the cup, but he can do a lot more with the basketball in his hands as well. A dominant rebounder, especially on the offensive glass. He is a really has really good court vision. Can pass out of the high post out of the short roll as well. One of the best pick and roll big men in the entire league. And he isn’t making that much money in the grand scheme of things. I know it’s close to $50 million annually, but it never hits that mark during the next three years on his deal. And as time goes on and the league will continue to get higher and higher salary caps, new TV deal will kick in down the line. Like that contract will look pretty decent in a couple of seasons and then two of those years which Jason Tatum will be a part of. Now, Sabonis, like I said, a stat sheet stuffer, man. Like triple double machine. He’s been averaging nearly anywhere from like six to eight assists over the last five seasons. So, he’s been, you know, a quasi like point guard type of player. He’ll bring the ball up after getting the ball, you know, after bringing down the rebound and, you know, run the break a little bit for the Kings as well. And the three-point shot is not super high volume, but it is there as well. Like he has a a really expansive offensive skill set. Obviously, I mentioned the defense is is rough, but this is a player who, you know, you’re going to be banking on to do a lot of things for you on one side of the floor and what whatever he can give you in drop coverage or what have you on the defensive end, you you’ll kind of take that. Decent around the rim as well. Now, Boston would have to give up a hall to get him. Not necessarily a hall isn’t, you know, they got to trade Jaylen Brown or Derek White or something like that, but he makes a lot of money. Like, naturally, the Selies going to have to combine a bunch of contracts in order to do so. Now, in order to make a trade for to demand the Sabonis, if you’re not trading Jaylen Brown, then you need to get under the second apron in order to aggregate contracts. So, a move around the margins needs to be made in order for this to even be a possibility. And while I say that, it is a very low possibility that anything like this ever materializes. But please, your report threw this out on one of their streams that the sellers would get Damont Sabonis in exchange for Anthony Simons, Sam Hower, George Niang, and Nimas Kada along with two first round picks. Like honestly, this is really just salary filler for the Kings when you really think about it. I mean, Sam Hower can be a long-term piece there, but very complimentary, not really matching the value of Sabonis there. So, you’re going to have to give out some draft capital uh and two first round picks for Boston, but hey, hopefully those are at the end of the first round. The C’s are back to contention. Now, I said Sam Hower with like kind of like verbal uh italics there because, you know, we know the seeds don’t really want to trade him at this point, but Michael Pena came out with this quote when he was going through a couple observations and he writes for the ringer now, but he used to cover the Celtics a couple of years ago. I was following him, you know, throughout the mid2010s and he said, “Boston is still in the second apron at about $20 million over the tax, but regardless of what Brad Stevens has said, it would be a stunner if it didn’t steal, you know, shed more money during the season to dodge repeater tax penalties.” The likely casualties are Anthony Simons and George Nyang, but no one should be shocked slash if slash when Sam Hower gets traded. Look, if it meant, you know, bringing in Sabonis, then I would be willing to trade Sam Hower. Like, that’s a casualty that I’m willing to make, and it’s a bet that I’m willing to make on a guy like a Baylor Shyman to end up developing. I know during summer league his jump shooting was rough, but like that’s a guy who you draft to hopefully be this the long-term Sam Hower replacement and you draft Ugo Gonzalez as well there to make up for some of the depth you’re giving up in this trade as well. So let me know in the comments section if this is something you’d be interested in bringing Sabonis to kind of fortify the Celtics front court for the foreseeable future. I’m sure he would be around for the long term. A for accept, D for decline, and if you would bring Sabonis in in exchange for Simons, Hower, Nyang, Kada, and two first round picks, that’s going to be the kicker. Next up is Nicoolola Vousvich of the Chicago Bulls. And we’re going to kind of go in tears here. You see Zabonis, who’s a perennial all-star, but now we shift, you know, gears to Nicole Vousvich, who’s more of a former all-star kind of the last legs of his career and also on an expiring contract. So what a Vousvich trade would really be for Boston is kind of just a stop gap and really just a band-aid on what the eventual bleeding will be in the Celtics front front court this season only. like I wouldn’t be willing to really look further past um this season for Vousvich in green, but this would also be help the Celtics, you know, try to shed more money and it would probably involve a guy like Anthony Simons going over to Chicago. He makes $20 million in the season. That’d be the Celtics shutting off like a little bit more than $7 million uh if they were try to make a one for one swap there. So, we’ll see if that’s at all a possibility. But BJ is no slouch when it comes to the offensive end either. And that’s another theme that that kind of stands true with these first two players is that they’re not really defensive stalwarts. Uh Vousvich even more so. Like he is an absolute cone on the defensive end, but he grabs a lot of boards, can hit that mid-range, got a really good in between float game as well. Solid post player and an underrated passer of the basketball as well. He’s hovering around three to four assists on a nightly basis. And he has really expanded his range over the past few seasons and shot at a 40% clip this past year on pretty solid volume. I think he was shooting about three or four or five a game. So, he’s really good three-level score offensively, but he is up there in age, 34, like doesn’t have a lot of tread left on the tires and I wouldn’t be looking much further past this season for Vousvich with Boston. Like I said though, could they get a trade done that just is a one for one swap that sheds a bunch of money and I know Vuch is like a pretty negative asset over there in Chicago, kind of untradable. Could we get some draft assets back? maybe a couple second round picks that you recoup back uh you know that you didn’t get in the Anthony Simons trade when you originally made it sending away Holiday after they you know they rescended those trades that we never really talked about on the show but Portland rescended the two first round uh second round picks excuse me that they got sent to Boston in exchange for Anthony Simons. So maybe you could recoup some of those in a deal like this because Boo really isn’t all that good. I would be taking the fly around Simons as the 26-year-old bouncy point guard. But a way a trade like this could be held up is I’ve heard reports over the past couple of days that the Bulls are really not in the market of trading um Kobe White who is kind of that similar archetype to uh Anthony Simons makes half the salary that he does and is also on an expiring deal this season. So who knows if they would be willing to make a deal for another player of that style while they are still in limbo with Josh Giddy in his restricted free agency as he seeks $30 million annually. One more player to talk about in just a moment though. All right, last name up and like I said, we’re going through tears here. It’s not going to be an all-star level player for the final Celtics trade target in the front court, but that’s going to be Brandon Clark and it is a name that we’ve talked about a little bit on the show uh previously when talking about Anthony Simons trade destinations and whatnot, but I know this isn’t a superstar level player, but the Celtics also have their superstars kind of in tow already. That’s why I really believe that a Sabonis trade would really not be the best course of action just because you would limit yourself as far as the rest of the roster that you can build. Like what if you got, you know, a $20 million player and then two $10 million players that that’s what Brandon Clark is. Brandon Clark is a 10 10 to12 million a year player like he’s making over the next two seasons. And then you know you have just even more depth on this roster to content. You have a Jason Tatum, you have a Jaylen Brown. That is your duo of superstars. that you’re trying to contend with for the next basically decade or so. And you know, Clark’s one of the most one of those complimentary pieces that probably plays a little bit above his weight class. And this is a guy who was averaging double digit points basically each of the last four seasons uh out there in Memphis. And yeah, he’s had some injury concerns back in 23 24. Basically missed the entire year, but he’s a super efficient player. He’s kind of taking the three ball out of his game that he tried to explore at Gonzaga when he was in school, but a solid rebounder as well. This is just a nice off thebench big for Boston to kind of have, you know, a as as they try to maybe develop some of the younger bigs on the roster to be the eventual starter. This is a guy who you can bring up the bench, play him at the floor, play him with the five. He’s athletic, can block shots, can be up as a lob threat as well. I like Brandon Clark as a player. Um, he’s got good in between the ear skills as well. Came from that Mark Fuse system up in the Pacific Northwest. And then we talked about a trade idea that would send him to Boston in exchange for assignments. And it’s really not just Brandon Clark that you’re kind of reaping the rewards of in this in this return. You’re also getting a guy like Vince Williams who just a season ago was averaging 10 points a night and you know like five rebounds, four assists. Like he can fill up the stat sheet and run a little bit of offense for you. And he’s a really solid versatile defender. I know he’s only a 6’4 but can guard ones, twos, and a couple of threes as well. And you get John Kchar a solid, you know, off the bench stretch big as well. You really increase the depth and get more like I know this isn’t sexy. I know I know this isn’t a sexy return basically whatsoever, but like if you look at the Celtics front court right now, I would take all three of these players. I know Vince Williams is kind of a guard/forward hybrid, but like I would take Brandon Clark and John Kar over like basically four or five of the guys that we just saw on our screen earlier. Like I’m taking Clark over every single person that you see on on your screen. I’m taking Kchar probably over Luca Garza, probably over Xavier Telman, over Amari Williams, even maybe over Nimas Kada, al albeit you know he possesses a much different skill set, but like come on like that that wasn’t a ridiculous trade when you think about who’s on the roster right now. Like Rome wasn’t built in a day. That’s where I’m kind of thinking about that trade that we just talked about because you’re you’re not going to to get a superstar level starting all-star caliber big with the assets that the Celtics are willing to trade away. Anthony Simons on an expiring deal. Sam Hower who only makes $10 million a year. How valuable can he actually be? Um you know more so than he already is to the Celtics and George Nier makes $8 million. And that’s outside of that like you’re not trading anything else that’s wearing green at this point. So maybe you get a couple more pieces that are just better than what you have right now. And then longterm down the line, you see kind of who works out from what you’re trying to develop down there in the front court. This is a year about experimenting. So we’ll see what uh Boston ends up doing down low. What do you guys think though? Pick one to trade for and pick it in the context that you saw what what the return was in a trade. If it’s the Mazda Sabonis where you got to give up two first, Sam Hower and a bunch of stuff, type DS. If it’s Bous where it’s kind of just an Anthony Simons one for one swap, give me an NV in the comments. And if it’s Brandon Clark, you want to take a couple flyers on some young Memphis Grizzlies, give me a BC down below and make sure you are subscribed to the channel. 2. PICK ONE TO TRADE FOR! Domantas Sabonis Type ‘DS’, Nikola Vucevic Type ‘NV’, Brandon Clarke Type ‘BC’

  3. Sabonis trade hideous for Celts. Trading marketable smaller contracts for a big one is the opposite of what they are trying to do.

How bout JB one up for sabonis. The Kings get the most overpaid player in NBA and we get number 2.

  4. I think that Sabonis/Vuc rebounding is not understood fully. Like KAT, These guys can't protect rim so they don't even try. They just position themselves for rebounds which is a good strategy for them cuz they can't defend. If somebody breaks free and you go to him to prevent his getting to the bucket that pulls you out of rebounding position, but worth it if you can block shots like KP, Luke etc. KAT Sabonis etc. produce rebounding numbers beyond their actual rebounding ability.
