The NBA’s Top 10 Head Coaches Ever

The NBA’s Top 10 Head Coaches Ever

All right, here are my top 10 coaches in NBA history, including someone who just this year entered the rankings. So, number 10, I’m going with Mike Danton. Controversial, I get it. But how would the most innovative offensive coach ever be remembered if Chris Paul just stayed healthy in 2018, but we don’t live in a world of whatifs? And Rick Carile is now taking three very different teams to the NBA Finals. I got John Daly at eight, Pat Riley at seven, and Steve Cerr at six. And could you argue both guys were kind of just handed super team? Sure. But don’t forget, Steve Kerr was really the mastermind behind small ball. And actually, this week’s athlete anthology video is all about Kerr’s life and career. I think it’s my best video yet. Check it out. I’m taking the greatest player development coach of all time, Eric Spolstra at five. Obviously, everyone knows Larry Brown’s the only coach to win both an NBA title and a college title. But like, man, he’s just coached so many incredible teams, but give me Greg Papovic at three. Red Hourback of the Celtics dynasty at two. And then look, was Phil Jackson the greatest X’s and O’s guy ever? Probably not. But 11 rings just speaks for itself.

  1. Check out the vid we just dropped about how Steve Kerr turned a childhood tragedy into one of the greatest player/coach careers ever 👌

  2. Auerbach at 1, he had 9 championships as a coach and was like 8-0 in game 7s alltime. He literally invented the fast break, drafted the first black player ever into the NBA as well as employed the first ever all black starting-five.

He was ahead of his time in many ways, and all he ever cared about was winning, and then he did that more times than any other coach ever.

  3. Horrible list. Red Auerbach at 2 is a joke. Dude coached when there 7 teams in the league. Kerr, Spoelstra, and Brown over Riley is insane.

  4. As a Spurs fan you’re just wrong, not even talking about Pop here but, Rick Carlisle is so underrated low key should be 5

  5. The Rams (NFL) and Warriors were very similar this season. Aging stars with an absolutely slept on defense and the best coaches in the sport, Kerr and McVay

  6. Including Red, it's like including a football coach practically, the league was so small, so different, so many guys didn't care or didn't put anywhere near that much into it in that era, hence why you have no others listed.

It hasn't happened yet, but one day, people are going to start to take a realistic look at Phil Jackson's career. Those Knicks years, how he won 6 with a guy we call the GOAT, and how he won 3 with the top 2 players in the league. The ones with a high usage Kobe and Pau are the only ones that are kind of impressive.

  7. To be honest the best coaches POP, Daly. Carly’s, and then Phil and RED. Reason is the talent. If you can’t win with Jordan, Magic, Kareem and Russel etc then why u there . Basically you have just to manage the egos and let your player/coach handle the team

  8. Was with you until the final 3. I think Pop is an easy number one, and Phil and Red are 2 & 3 in whatever order.

  9. I was going in thinking it was gonna be bad, but this is a very good list. I still think Steve Kerr is suspect tho
