The Mavs signed veteran D’Angelo Russell to a two-year contract worth approximately $13 million using the salary cap exception after Kyrie declined his option and agreed to a $119 million extension in July. Russell will be the starting point guard while Kyrie recovers from a torn ACL expected in early 2026. Max Christie, who joined Anthony Davis in the Luca Donic trade package, was excited. I was happy. Russell arrives to lead the team in Kyrie’s absence with the plan to form a starting five alongside Anthony Davis, Cooper Flag, and Klay Thompson. Coach Jason Kidd also intends to use Cooper Flag as an occasional point guard to accelerate his development. With Kyrie expected to return in early 2026, Russell should handle the pressure for almost the entire season. Max Christie gets a chance to shine with minutes alongside the former Laker. And the goal is clear. Stability on the court. After a turbulent previous season, Russell brings experience and organization to the Mavericks backcourt.
