Indiana Pacers GM tells all, Tyrese Haliburton opens up on injury, and more key Pacers news

Holy smokes, it’s a newsy week in Pacers land. GM Chad Buchanan grabs the mic with setting the pace and says a lot about the Pacers off season. Tyrese Halburn grabs the mic and says a lot about his recovery. And so much more to get to on today’s Locked On Pacers podcast. You are Locked on Pacers, your daily Indiana Pacers podcast. part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. What’s up everybody? Happy Wednesday and welcome in to another edition of the Locked On Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers. As always, my name’s Tony East. I cover the team for Forbes and today I’m back and a lot happened. I’ve been gone for about two and a half days. And since then, Tyrese Halbertton sat down on Pat McAfee and talked about his injury and recovery and the Pacers run and Chad Buchanan went on setting the pace and talked about the off season and revealed some news about all sorts of stuff. And TJ McConnell wrote an article in the Players Tribune and oh my gosh, The Notebook just kept growing and growing and growing and I thought, man, these would all be great segments, but not a full show. Well, perfect. I got enough for a full show. But we have a lot to break down. And the reason I want to throw this on the one episode is cuz one, it’s actually very important information. And two, I’m going to cite this stuff a bunch going forward. It’s important to point back and say, hey, right there, that’s where you can find it. I’ll put links to where you can find everything referenced today. Uh, in the description here, we start with Chad Buchanan, the Pacers general manager. He went on setting the pace with Alex Golden, who was on the show Monday as we recap summer league. I think on that show we talked about, hey, go check this out. Chad Buchanan’s going on their show. Really good stuff. First of all, they covered a ton of ground, nearly an hour. Uh, really nice of Chad Buchanan to do that and good of the setting the pace guys to get a lot out of it. So, first of all, the most direct next coming thing that we know about in the Pacers off seasonason would be them wrapping up their two-ways. And it sounds like from Chad Buchanan there that Tenon Peter is likely to get the last two-way spot. That is I I mean, I think everybody thought after some Tenon Peter deserved a two-way. The question was more about would Enrique Freeman get one and they convert somebody else or would Enrique Freeman not get one. So one, good for Taylor Peter, he deserves it. That makes good sense. Two, the other thing he kind of subtly dropped in is they liked Ray J Dennis’s summer league, he’s somebody they want to keep. I think that given their point guard situation, that makes good sense, but having that concrete on the record is good to know. And then Enrique, it just seemed like the way he discussed him bringing up all four centers, it just seemed like he’d be on the outs. You know, my case has always been they should convert Q, cut a center, and keep Enrique. But I did say when I made that case that Enrique is worse than the four centers that they have. They do have four better centers now. Uh so if they do go that route, I I totally get it. And uh I believe in the interim between that interview and me talking right now. The Pacers actually pulled Freeman’s qualifying offer, which means he’d be an unrestricted free agent. I need to check with people on that, but I’m fairly certain that that’s the case. And if that is the case, I would put his odds at being back much lower than I would have in another reality. I’m almost certain other teams are interested in Enrique Freeman. So, um, between Buchanan and other things there, it seems like, um, he Enrique Freeman less likely to be back than before. Uh, and in terms of beyond the two-way decision, Chad Buchanan said they’re not like actively pursuing a point guard or another ball handler, right? If they have Quinton Jackson, Ray Jay Dennis, and the two-point guard, they have they have four. I think they’ll have to be very strategic how they handle those two ways like keeping one guy active and not the other a lot of the time because if one or both of Nemhardt and McConnell get hurt, they would really need those guys and they can always figure something out mid-season, right? Tony Bradley is not guaranteed till January, he could be waved mid-season. Wiseman’s partially guaranteed. They could always make trades. Like there’s a lot of ways they could eventually figure out point guard. looking at the immediate barrier in front of them. It sure seems like that’s the four they’re going with if they’re not actively pursuing somebody. But of course, if something great falls in their lap, they should do that. Uh the other roster thing that he brought up or that they well there was many. Another roster thing they brought up was centers. They they talked after Turner departed about the choice between making a trade with another team or doing center by committee. They obviously had dialogue with other teams. They do that all the time, every single day. But they chose the committee approach and they’ve liked Juff for a bit. And he actually mentioned the specific game which was very funny because so first of all Chad Buchanan mentioned that they like Jay Huff. They think he can be a spacing five. They like that some of those skills replicate what Miles Turner could do which was important. The other thing that was funny is he brought up a specific game of Jay Huff which was in the playoffs three playoffs ago now for the Mad Ants now the boom excuse me the Mads then they played the Washington or the DC go-go the capital city go-go. There we go. Third try a charm. They lost that game and Chad Benn remembers. Wow. Jhub played really well in that game and it was like a you know one of the many memories he has of the scouting Jhub experience. It’s you know what’s funny about that game is my memory of that game was that was the first time I was exposed to Quinton Jackson. He was on the go- go and he was awesome. He was the go- go’s leading scorer in that game and I remember thinking, “Oh, this guy’s pretty good.” And then they signed him the next season. So that’s funny that two different players from the go- go in that game. Now on the Pacers Jay Huff in that game, by the way, 16 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, two steals, five blocks. Yes, that is correct. Chad, if you’re listening, that’s the Quinton Jackson game to me. Uh they he was asked about Okay, some other stuff just kind of around the team, less about specifically to Oh, actually one more free agency thing. He did say that he talked to James Johnson recently. Johnson wants to keep playing, but he didn’t really sound like something that the Pacers would be all over right now. He said, quote, “Right now, it could be challenging to find a spot for James and said that, you know, in my my opinion of the roster right now and the change dynamics and the ripple effects that have come from Halburn’s injuries that it’d be hard to fit him in, right?” And so, if he wants to be back in a different role, maybe so, but if he wants to keep playing, is he really going to take a coaching role? I know people always say that. People keep saying this. They say, “Well, James Johnson just be an assistant coach. It’s already what he is.” Like, you don’t think teams have thought of that? Like clearly at one it it is different being a player versus being a coach. Like the way another teammate if you are a player and you are practicing every day and you have to do the conditioning test and you have to be in the weight room and you have to take care of your body. You get a different respect from your teammates. Your voice means more. Obviously he is closer to coach than player in terms of his impact on the team daytoday. But like it’s a different voice. It’s different. It’s not the same or else every team would just try to do that. Anyway, without Tyrese, with the expectations changing this year with their roster now being full, given the moves they made, I would not expect a James Johnson reunion right now, mid-season, maybe like two years ago when they signed him in December. Perhaps if there’s a reason to do it, then uh that could make sense. And and he also mentioned the the centers. He mentioned taking that to camp. So, I would imagine even with Tony Bradley being fully non-g guaranteed, he’ll be on the team come training camp in about two months from now. Uh that is basically everything that I consider noteworthy of the free agency side of things. So who knows when it’ll come, but I would expect maybe not super long for the Taylor Peter signing to be official. Last year it was late July that they crossed the finish line with their first group of two and then early August with the last one. There’s many reasons it could happen on a specific day. There’s no like absolutely perfect important time it has to happen. So just keep an eye out for that. other things that made me go, “Oh, interesting.” Um, one, he recounted the Miles Turner version of events basically the same as everybody else has. Two, like Rick Carile told me in an interview that I’ll talk about a little bit later, but like, you know, when I talked to Rick at summer league, Rick mentioned them trying to win, right? Win games this year. And I know people talked about the gap year and they got their pick and like, oh, maybe they could be a little bit worse. Um, and and you know, Rick talked about them being better, right? He said the end of one of Rex quotes meals were trying to win. Chad Buchanan said they don’t view it as a gap year. They are also trying to win. Right. So I get that they might have a certain ceiling that’s lower and that is a fair way to discuss their season. I think the Pacers would tell you their ceiling is lower this season, but they’re going, I think, to try to win with the resources that they have. It’s kind of hard not to. They have a lot of guys who will be extension eligible next year that are playing for something. They have good players in their team. Obviously, maybe they’ll be a little bit more uh let’s say jud um long-term approach thinking with their injuries. Maybe uh they’ll default to some younger guys in some decisions for minutes later in the season, but I certainly think they’ll try to win as much as they can throughout the year. The other thing is he mentioned one, Jarus Walker need to play with Forest. That’s the second straight summer that we’ve heard that. And two, uh but both center and two guard sounds like have a position battle for the starting spot coming. So, two guard or center obviously makes sense. I think Jackson should have the inside track. He knows the system well. He’s probably the best player of the group, but Huff provides the most Miles Turner things. I’d put those two as the top two for that job right now. And then he said two guard and obviously like one of the guard spots would be open with Halbert now. Two guard with Nemhard moving down. So, I think you can pen in Sharpie and whatever. Obviously, you could have done this anyway, but Nemhard and Nith and Zak starting, who are the other two going to be? And he mentioned two guard and then he said there’s a lot of competition coming in training camp for that. And he mentioned Ben Matherin. Got it. Ben Shepard makes sense. They started him when Halbert got hurt two years ago in the Eastern Conference Finals for example. Although Matherin started last year in the place of Aaron Smith and did quite well. That was a different context. And then he mentioned Jarus Walker, Aaron Nesmith and Johnny Fury and he me talked about Nehard’s ball handling and how that’s been important. So I think there might be certain skills they look for in that spot. I obviously, not obviously, I think that Ben Matherin should have the inside track for that spot. I think that makes the most sense, but I do understand them looking at certain other skills. I we’ll see how they do it, but I think Matherin and Jackson would be my starters. Uh you can listen to the rest of that interview on setting the pace where you can hear from Chad Buchanan. The other breaking news, that’s my segue into segment two. They did apply for and receive a disabled player exception. The Pacers did for Tyrese Hallebertton’s injury. as if he needed more confirmation. He’s almost certainly going to be out for all of next season beyond Kevin Pritchard literally telling us that he’s not going to play next year. That is another one. An independent team of doctors determined it’s very likely he’s out through at least next June. So, um that’s one key thing there. The other part of that is that’s a salary cap exception. I keep getting asked this, Tony. What does this mean? Why would they even apply for it if they can’t use it or if they can’t use it in effect here? So, let’s talk about it. I’ll keep this brief and not get too dorky. But, so first of all, people keep saying it’s half his salary. It’s not. So, a disabled player exception is for either half of an injured player’s salary or the amount of the non-tax pyramid mid-le exception. Whichever number of those numbers is lower. In this case, the non- tax mid-level is lower. So, the disabled player exception for Hallebertton is only 14.1 million. I’ve actually been talking to people in an out of the league about how I would change that specific rule, but that’s not important for this podcast. So, they have a $14 million disabled player exception. It’s basically another mid-level exception. It allows them to add a player in this case specifically on a one-year deal making that 14.1 million number or less. And they can do it via trade or via a signing. So that’s great. They can add another player. It’s not an extra roster spot, right? Hallebertton still counts as one of their 15 players on the team. So they’d have to be under 15 players to use that. The other thing is they are less than 14 million from the tax. I think it’s kind of over with Turner gone and and Hallebertton Herd on them crossing the tax unless it’s like they’re getting LeBron James for $14 million. I have them right now um about 6.06 million from the tax. So there’s no way they’re using all 14 million of that exception even like the mid level. I don’t think they’d use all of their mid level or any at this stage maybe later in the season. So they have it. People say why even apply for it then if you can’t use all it because you might, right? What if you trade uh like I’ll make up an example like what if you want what if a team offered you the perfect fit for your team making $14 million and all they wanted in return was Johnny Fury or Cam Jones. Great. You can legally do that. You could take that player into the exception and then trade out that player making next to nothing and that’s a legal trade because you have this extra salary cap exception to do it. Then if you you know you can create a trade exception in some goofy ways like it just adds flexibility for other moves, right? If you end up doing a trade that would be legal for salary matching for the other team, but you take the player in to the exception, you could get a trade exception. The the better question to ask people who say, “Why apply for it is why not, right? Why not have the extra tool even if you’re not going to use it? You just never know what’s going to be available.” People I talked about James Weisman creating a trade exception at the trade deadline for his minimum salary and everybody says, “Why? Who cares? It’s a small trade exception. Those don’t get used.” And then they used it to bring in Jay Huff. Like you just never know what these resources can provide or will lead to. So that is the DPE to this point situation. And speaking of Tyrese Hallebertton, he like me right now also grabbed the mic. You went on Pat McAfee for almost an hour. Also, man, were we blessed with more information from the Pacers. What did Hallebertton say? Does it change anything about the indication for the coming season? Thanks for making it your first listen today and every single day. Our second listen, locked on Suns. They made some maneuvers. They brought in two players on Tuesday. Jared Butler, who I talked about on the Pacers free agency show I did earlier this week. Love Jared Butler. That’s a great pick up. They claim Jordan Goodwin, who’s also a good player on an awesome contract. A really good day for the Suns. Locked on Suns will have more. I actually made the case to somebody tweeting at me that I wouldn’t think it was crazy if the Pacers put in a waiver claim for Jordan Goodwin, but uh the Suns would have had a higher waiver claim. We will never know. I’m also getting a tweet of a photoshopped Russell Westbrook Pacers uniform that says yes to Westbrook. Uh that makes no sense for the Pacers or Russell Westbrook. So, that’s an easy one to skip ahead on. Okay, let’s continue. I also just saw the Johnny Fury one on ESPN. So, so many Pacers players are just yapping right now. Okay, Tyrese Halbert yapped. He was on Pat McAfee talking about his injury the moment it happened. It was it was really interesting to hear about what he was kind of thinking about because you know like like it’s so natural everybody was talking about how they were distracted in game like I was too. I think all of you listening were probably distracted couldn’t think about the game. Everybody was thinking about the next season what this injury is could come back. He said all he was thinking about was that game seven, right? He wasn’t thinking ahead at all. He wasn’t thinking about next season in any way, which was really interesting, right? I always wonder what the, you know, he’s so crushed on the floor, like it makes sense that he’s locked into this specific game where the net looks like it’s twice as big as normal and he’s just throwing it in easy. That was really heartbreaking to hear. Uh, however, the rest of the informative stuff more more so than that was uh he talked about kind of the the trajectory of his playoffs with regards to the injury. I think this is kind of important to talk about because it’s so easy for a lot of people, I think, to say, “Oh, he shouldn’t play. He shouldn’t play.” I I I thought he should play uh in game seven to be clear, but he said he felt good throughout the whole playoffs. In game two, he started to feel a little bit of pain in the back of his leg and he thought it was dehydration at the time. Like he was kind of like anti about the game. He didn’t focus on water enough that day. So, he had like some he had the MRI after that game, right? Some swelling, but not a real concern. They played games three and four. They play great in game three and win. Uh they could have, should have, would have won game four. He said he feels fine. And then game five, he’s he’s caught up with Chad and uh oh, you know, that’s when he has the calf injury moment. And he realizes then that it’s a strain. And after that is when he had a meeting with doctors, no front office. And if it was the regular season, they determined he’d be sitting a few weeks. But that’s kind of when he realized that what what it was. But he said in that meeting, he said if there was any chance he could play that he would. And they said there was. And he passed a stress test before game six. And off he goes. So, it wasn’t like this was something that like lingered through the whole playoffs. He kind of ironically dumped on my own take that there’s too many games and that running around as much as players are asked to nowadays with the more spread out court and long season contributed which was very funny. But I I do think it’s important to know that that’s the timeline of events and how it went for him and that he knew the risks and still didn’t anyway and he told Dustin and I that Dustin Pierrick and I talked to him before game six. He said, “Yep, I know the risks. I know it’s possible. I’m going to play right.” And I think that I think that is the correct choice. You have a chance at a title. You’re two wins from a title. You play even if it jeopardizes an entire season. I know this season might suck for some fans, but I think that was the right choice, especially given that trajectory and especially especially right. So he said they win game six and he wasn’t even being bothered by the calf. Now granted, they dominated that game. He only played 23 minutes, so that could be part of it, but he thought it was over. He said he thought it was over after that and felt nothing going into game seven. And of course it happens. So, in his eyes, it’s just bad luck. A lot of injuries are just bad luck. I think there’s always a little bit more to it than that. But, you know, like there were he had a good point. There were not very many killies injuries two seasons ago and there were eight last year. Like, what’s really going on? Is it really that much of a recent trend? Who knows? Uh, the other revealing part that I found very entertaining that I would love to talk to Kevin Durant about is Tyrese said he talked to Kevin Durant about this. Kevin Durant kind of the face of this type of Achilles injury, the calf into Achilles pipeline. They of course happened to both of them in the finals. And I I thought I got a kick out of Tai saying that Katie doesn’t really like that he’s kind of become the face of this devastating injury just because of when it happened to him. And of course Katie comes back and is still awesome. And so in some ways it it stinks for Durant that he’s the face of it. But he’s going to be a reference point for Hallebertton the whole season of like that is the hope if you’re the Pacers. Now Kevin Durant’s game does not rely on the same kind of muscle movements as Halle Burton’s. Kevin Ran came back and it has still been sensational, like spectacular sensational ever since. Achilles recoveries are better now than they’ve ever been. Uh, but you just never really know what it’s going to look like. Some guys aren’t as good, right? It’s just different. It’s a different experience. You never know what the rehab experience leads you for the rest of your body. Kevin Ern went to Hallebertton’s house in this case and they talked about that. Um, so that is what the Achilles path for Hallebertton who said this coming season, uh, he wants to be around the team as much as possible. It’s his teammates. He loves them. They’re family to him. Um, but he said probably early in the year, right, travel won’t be as possible. Makes sense. He’ll have to rehab once he can. He really not only wants to be around his teammates, but he wants to be around Rick Carile and the coaching staff and kind of in those coaching meetings, get that kind of side of things more ingrained there so you can understand what’s going on dayto-day, all that kind of stuff. really informative kind of his approach to the coming season knowing he’s going to be out and rehabbing the whole time. Also, the last um injury related thing is he he mentioned that in game seven he’s heard he’s down. He wanted to like Kobe Bryant did walk off the court himself and he took one step and was like, “Nope, that’s not happening.” Uh he gave Kobe Kobe a lot of praise for taking that free throw on a torn Achilles because he like couldn’t put anything on it. He felt like his leg wasn’t even there. said, “Of course, James Johnson and a trainer carry him back and the rest is history.” But that was his first public comments about the injury, I think, since it happened, unless I missed some interview. I mean, obviously, he’s been yapping it up at Fever Games, but like talking about the injury and the Pacers and everything. I think that was the first time. Very revealing Pat McAfee show uh earlier this week. I can’t remember the exact day. I think it was Tuesday. It might have been Monday. Regardless, you’ll learn a lot about his psyche and all that kind of stuff. He talks a lot about the playoff run and they talk about the overrated stuff. They talked a lot about and then with kind of John Hallebertton which was a delight. Um always good to hear from John and about John. So you’ll learn a lot if you watch that. The other part obviously that fans want to know. I asked Kevin Pritchard this. I said Kevin how does Tyrese feel about the departure of Miles Turner? And Kevin as he should to be clear did not give me the answer. Said he’s going to keep that private. Okay. Tai talked about it. He said, “People in India have taken a liking to Miles after these last 10 years.” But he said, “At the end of the day, it’s a business.” All right. The classic NBA player talking about another NBA player line. It’s always funny that people talk like players talk about not wanting to mess with other players money and then when a player takes the money, everybody’s like, “Wait, wait, wait, not like that.” Um, but anyway, that Tai didn’t say that. That that’s just a thought that popped into my head about NBA players. He said he wishes Miles the best and now Tyresese turns his focus to his current team. And that’s that. He’ll get another question about that uh on Pacers Media Day in a couple months. I’m sure he’ll have to answer it for a while. Uh but there’s so much more in there than the stuff I just talked about. Ty talked about the fever being an IndieW Allstar. Uh all sorts of stuff about his rehab, like the challenge of eating breakfast at his house, for example, his timeline with crutches. Like I don’t want to spoil everything. I just want to run through the parts that I found to be the most revealing and important. Uh, but he is out for the year. They get a disabled player exception for him. Chad Buchanan talked about that part. Tai talked about this part. It’s all happening in the land of the Pacers. And that’s not all. TJ McConnell wrote a great story in the Players Tribune. I talked to Rick Carile. Apparently, Johnny Furby’s talking. I didn’t even get a chance to listen to that. So much more to get to. We close out today’s lockdown pacers. We’re back here on lockdown pacers. Thanks for making a short first listen today and every single day or second listen. Many choices, although the free agency period is dying down. I would say locked on Celtics because I’m very interested in their off season of late, especially as Ben Simmons got linked to them today. That doesn’t really make a ton of sense to me. But regardless, uh, John Carales can break down the Seling moves the Celtics made, how good can they really be, what’s coming for them. They’re a fascinating team to me, right? I talked about them getting worse on the moves around the league that impacted the Pacers show yesterday, and I still obviously believe that, but they’re set up pretty well to potentially bounce back when the Tatum return comes uh one season from now. Uh, first up, TJ McConnell in the Players Tribune. really really good stuff about his emotions on the playoff run, the finals. It was funny to see his players tribune page. His first one was about the end of the process. It was from like the late 2010s and even earlier than that, right? When he was with Philly and that team finally becoming like decent to good and now this one of him, you know, 24 minutes from a championship and how crushing it was, but also how awesome he viewed last season because he viewed that team, that Pacers team like a family, right? and how much like I thought one he had one line that I don’t want to read verbatim that I want you to go read but he talked about how like the end of the series the series against the Thunder and that season you know the just given the way the Pacers season had gone they kind of just felt like invincible and that you know they always overcome the challenge they always come back they always win the series they always take the game whatever and they didn’t in that game and it was like like wait that’s it like we don’t get to do it like it it just it didn’t have the same form of finality as the rest of their playoff run did where everything was so grand and crazy and exciting. They always got a chance to to fight back or do something epic and they did every single time. They didn’t get another chance. Like it it’s just a weird kind of reality of the whole playoff run. The other part of his that he wrote in there that I can talk about now is there’s that video of him walking on the court off the court, excuse me, in game seven and everybody’s like, “Oh, it’s TJ and his mom.” And I told people that like I knew I was like, “That’s not his mom.” But I didn’t it was a Pacer staffer. didn’t want to say much about it because, you know, these people like to keep those moments private, but TJ wrote about it. So, if you want to know who that actually was and why that was a perfect lead for him to describe kind of the finals experience, I’d highly recommend reading that piece from TJ McConnell. I love those players tribute things. I know that that they have a staff of people who can help them and doll it up and make it good. But, you getting players thoughts that directly usually happens because they’re very passionate about like their current situation with their team. Uh TJ McConnell, there you go. Okay, the last thing here. I talked to Rick Carile at summer league. I’ve talked about some of his answers on this podcast um already, but you can read that interview in Forbes. It’s like two stories ago for me. I asked him about, you know, appreciating their playoff run, but let me read you a few answers that I think fans will enjoy. I asked him about losing Miles Turner. Said, “Are you surprised to have lost Miles Turner?” And then in the same question, I wish I put this up in retrospect. I said, “You’ve done a center by committee approach before. How do you expect that to go for the Pacers this year?” combined for those things he said will be fine. That’s it. I think Carlilele expects things to go fine at the center spot as he said and go well and they’ll be able to stay on their feet, keep running and making stuff happen uh without without Miles. He mentioned that uh he also I I mentioned this a few times, but I asked about Jay Huff in the center rotation. He said uh he’s at the right age. He’s a stretch big can protect the room. And he said and with him, Isaiah Wiseman, and Tony Bradley, we’ve got a lot of different options. So, this is kind of a tea leaves deal, but both Chad Buchanan and Rick Carile and I think Kevin at one point have all mentioned Tony Bradley by name. It’s only relevant because like if a guy’s out of a team’s plans, he just like it’s kind of like an omission deal that you can just kind of tell. They’ve all mentioned him. I think Tony Bradley is firmly like in the training camp plans for the Pacers. So, obviously non-G guaranteed contract that they could wave at any time, but keep Tony Bradley on the brain as a potential to be on the team kind of guy. Carile also said that he thinks u that Wiseman and Jackson will be in good shape for training camp. Uh and they’ve been working really hard. He said with Jim Boland uh since they’ve been able to get back on the court when they come in the facility, they’ve been working with Jim Boen, one of the assistant coaches about uh getting ready and getting to go. I asked him about the draft picks, what the Pacers liked about those guys. You can read about that in the story so much more about the coming season. And when I asked him about I mentioned this answer earlier, you know, what excites him about the season, how it’s going to look. He said it’s going to present a great opportunity in some form. I saw a thing today that had us ranked 20th or 21st in the league going into next year. That’s good motivation. So, we’ll have a chance to have a real opportunity to help develop some guys in some real quality minutes and we’re trying to win. So, I think that is kind of what this season is, that blend of develop guys, give them big minutes, but try to win in that exact scenario. We talked about Fury, we talked about Jarus’s recovery, and so much more. Again, you can read that story uh in Forbes, and of course, so much more coming. I have a combo with another Pacers player that’ll be up at some point. I want to write about the DPE because a lot of people have questions about that disabled player stuff and so much more. Suddenly, it’s busy in Pacerland and we’ll have all of it right here on Lockdown Pacers. Presuming no signing tomorrow’s show, Tyler Smith’s going to stop by. We’re going to try to build out the Pacers rotation and figure out the minutes for every player at every position as I do every offseason. Uh, and then next week we’ll see about what we can do to close out July and then deep off seasonason. We’re already really in the deep off season, but stuff is happening. People are talking and there is so much to actually discuss, including on today’s show. Hope you guys enjoyed this one and learned something. Again, I’ll leave the the links to all these things because I’m summarizing like an hour and 15 minutes of stuff into three little segments. You’ve got to listen to all of it yourself uh in links below. But thank you all so much for listening today. You can find me on Twitter and Blue Sky, Tony AR. podcast is at Lockdown Pacers on both Twitter and Instagram. Back tomorrow talking about the Pacers rotation or if they sign anybody any signings. Thank you all for listening. We’ll see you very soon.

  2. When Haliberton tore his Achilles I felt like I was going to throw up. I really like him as a person and a player. I pray that he comes back as good or better.

  3. Losing Haliburton sucks but it seems like the coaches and front office have big confidence in all the young guys. Will be an exciting season for different reasons.

  4. James Johnson playing days might be over. Pacers could create a player personnel position for James Johnson so he can continue to flow with the organization.

  5. Watching Hali's game winning shot in game 1, on the McAfee show, I noticed he was fouled on the elbow of his shooting arm. The foul came just as Tyrese let go of the ball but it reminded me just how many fouls the Thunder got away with. That trophy should be sitting in Indy, we had the best team, without all of those fouls, particularly game 4, The Thunder lose that series in 6.

  6. I have been hearing a lot of talk about the Pacers making a move for Trey Murphy III. I watched a lot of videos of his games. Some people think he will be a PF yet he is a bit lean and seems to be more natural as a wing.

Issues to consider by trading for him.

    1. If projected as a PF, then the Pacers would have to move Siakum. My preference is to keep Siakum.

    2. If SG, then Bennedict Matherin will have to be traded and this also creates a question over the role of Nembhard once Tyrese returns unless Tj McConnell moves to 3rd string PG or is traded (also depending upon how well Nemhard plays at PG this coming season).

    3. If at SF, then the issue will be whether to keep Nesmith or trade him and it also creates questions over the roles of Ben Shepherd, Jarace Walker and Furphy.

Then we have to observe the players who might be coveted for a trade to happen which will most likely include Obi Toppin, Ben Matherin or possibly Jarice Walker along with future draft picks as being the most tradeable assets.

The fact is that Trey Murphy III is a starter with a high ceiling and a potential star in this league makes this trade very interesting and there will be opportunity costs involved that will have an impact on the dimensions for this current team.

These are not easy decisions for the brass of the Pacers and the fans who appreciate the players currently on this Pacers team. Will a trade for Trey help this team? Will he fit into the team playing style? Is Trey a high character person and will be a good locker room guy?

I believe the first two questions are a Yes. I currently do not have enough information to determine the last question I posed.
