Something Strange is Going On…

Tensions between Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76’s organization are seemingly at an all-time high with plenty of past scars built up already. There is clearly from some frustration coming from Embiid regarding the state of his rehab in which he revealed to the public in a tell article on ESPN. However, some has concerns that the frustrations with Embiid could stem to effects beyond just him as a talent with Kendrick Perkins pitching on ESPN. That if the Sixers are not careful that Tyrese Maxi could be the next player to demand out of Philadelphia. I want to dive into why he’s thinking this direction, why I do think there is a bit of truth to what Kendrick Perkins is saying, even though that directly I don’t think the Sixers should be in fear of in the short term there. And just discuss a little bit about Maxi’s outlook moving forward. It has been one of the more bizarre career trajectories for a player who was drafted 21st overall. Really had to earn his minutes at the start of his career and then sort of benefited from guys like Ben Simmons holding out that he gets his opportunity to get thrown to the starting lineup and what did he do but deliver and looked every bit of the co-star that Joel Embiid was looking for all along as he prepares to head to his age 25 season. We’re seeing Tyrese Maxi begin to get treated a bit differently with the organization. And I mean that positively here. It is no coincidence that they’re bringing in Trendan Watford, who certainly plays a position of need on the Sixers team, but also grew up with Tyrese Maxi to an extent, that they knew each other with kids. It’s no coincidence that he’s getting the Maxi Museum, being treated like a superstar, going to VJ Edgecomb’s workouts, and I want to talk about all of what this means. Now, I do want to start with the Kendrick Perkins quote here that kind of got me fired up and wanted to hop on here. And he’s calls out the Sixers saying, quote, “If they keep trending in this direction of no culture and no stability, guess what? Tyrese Maxi is gonna want out of Philadelphia. Now, this overall message in itself, I think there is some loose truth with. I’m sure that Tyrese Maxi is far from happy about how last season went, but I don’t think this is anything to worry about in the short term. In reality, there is a bit of grace built up that I do think Maxi understands that how things work with Joel at this stage of the game and the two do seem to be genuinely close. And as far as how much of a disaster last year was across the board, I still think Tyrese Maxi showed some encouraging stretches here. And to dive into exactly what he brought to the table, played 37.7 minutes per game, which is too many in my mind. He was leading the NBA in minutes for quite a stretch, and then got a couple injuries. Probably not not correlated there. Now, his overall production, 26.3 points, 6.1 assists per game, 3.3 rebounds. The efficiency did take a dip last year. Shot just 43.7% from the field, 33.7% from beyond the three-point arc, only 27.5% on corner threes. Also want to acknowledge the injuries that he did play with. There was a stretch where Tyrese Maxi had to change his shot form to the point where he was shooting with three fingers because of an issue that he was dealing with on his hand there. Now, it is unacceptable in my mind that he was even on the court, especially given the context of that season here. But I do also respect that from Tyrese Maxi who say what you want about Joel Embiid and Paul George and all the time that they missed. Tyrese Maxi was on the floor and competing for as much as he possibly could even to the late stages of that season here. Ultimately, it was a frustrating year all around, but I think defensively what Maxi showed me last year for a couple brief stretches, I’m really encouraged and I think changed a bit of how I view his overall potential that I think Tyrese Maxi can absolutely be a capable defender to the point where if he’s the worst defender on the floor, that’s going to be a pretty good defensive team. I was not sure of that initially coming in the NBA and last year did take strides in those directions. Now, as far as Maxi overall, this Sixers organizational uh conversation is pretty complex here. And I do once again encourage everyone to check out that Embiid article which revealed a lot of the past demons that we all sort of knew but put on full display and was articulated very quickly here. The Six’s organization is not perfect. They’ve done plenty wrong and are still doing plenty wrong. But I do think that if you were compare how things are run right now versus how things were run 10 years ago, there have been some significant steps forward here to the point where and beat acknowledging stories like an intern overseeing his initial rehab. Uh things like the lack of communication, the lack of belief in him, the the just every single decision-making process the organization went down was not exactly to the standard of a true NBA franchise. And I think we are there. weird to competence to an extent that I don’t think that this organization was for a significant stretch there. Now, for Maxi specifically here, the benefit that I think he has in this situation and people underrate this for how appealing this can be to players is he is the future man. He is who the organization will be passed to. And to highlight exactly what I mean with that youth movement here is just take a look at each of these ages. Hey, uh VJ Edgecom 19 years old, Jared McCain 20 years old, Justin Edwards 21 years old, Janai Broom 22 years old, Adm Bona 22, Ricky Council 23, Maxi 24, and Quinton Grimes 25. That he is the leader of this next era of Sixers basketball and I think that’s something that he signs up for. It’s something that he will be into. I think the ultimate sinker swim for Tyrese Maxi and how committed he is to Philadelphia. For starters, he seems to love it and I think that there are plenty of situations that would have rubbed him the wrong way more than anything that has gone down this off seasonason already during his Philadelphia tenure. But what will decide if he is truly committed? It comes down to how good are VJ Edgecomb and Jared McCain. Is a trio of Jared McCain, VJ Edgecomb, and Tyrese Maxi something that can lead to some some teamwide success? We we’ve we’re going to do the dance and talk about the fit concerns, the size concerns, and all of that. But the bottom line is I agree with the Sixers philosophy of collecting talented players and figuring out the fit later. And by the way, there does seem to be some belief in each of these guys that I did want to pull up this quote from Tyrese Maxi on VJ Edgecomb here. Shout out to Kyle Newbeck of PHY Sports who says, “Tyrese Maxi just now on VJ Edgecomb. Quote, I see the same things everybody else sees. Somebody who can probably work himself into being a star in this league, man. And we also know that there is a really solid relationship between him and Jared McCain here that I did tweet this little picture and the video is hilarious as well from last season that it’s and I tweeted Tyrese Maxi showing Jared McCain some love and then refusing to skip made me smile. This backcourt rules and sort of the video that runs down is this was when Jared McCain was just bursting onto the scene. This tweet coming on December 8th last year where he was showing what he can do and McCain baldled out in this game. Maxi was thrilled to be playing with him and sort of waited for him walking off the court. McCain comes over. Maxi pulls his arm around him. McCain starts skipping and then Maxi got gets like that. All right, let’s settle down a little bit, man. Which I just love all parts of this. And even the way that when when Maxi talks as far as the off the court, the way that he regards McCain, I think means a little something that these are guys that I think see things like why did likeminded and as far as the culture concerns, which what Kendrick Perkins is getting at here, Maxi can be at the forefront of changing that entirely. And I do think McCain and Edgecomb are guys that are going to see that vision the same way. These are workers. These are guys that are going to be in the gym until the light shut out. This is not a guy like Joel Embiid for all the love that we can have with him had to protect his own body as his number one priority. That unfortunately the reality is for all the complaints about fitness or the shape he is or all this. What is most beneficial to Joel Embiid is to make sure his body is at as healthy of a stage as possible. even if that means staying on the trainers table or staying in the ice bath rather than getting up some additional shots on the court. That is the the just give and take that had to come with his career. That is not the case with any of Tyrese Maxi, Jared McCain and VJ Edgecom. And for all the size concerns, that is plays into the favor for this side of things. We know how big men can be more more vulnerable to foot and knee issues and Embiid is right at the top of the list when having that discussion there. guys like McCain, Maxi, Edgecom, these guys can run around for days and really not feel the effects that significantly here. Now, I did want to pull up this here is when thinking about the total like incompetence of this Sixers organization over these past couple years, this sort of I guess not really stat but fact here really kind of put it into perspective for me and I did some digging last night looking at Joel Embiid’s longest tenure teammates in his career. The longest tenure teammate that Joel Embiid has ever had is Furkcon Corkmas who played seven seasons alongside him. Number two on that list, Tobias Harris, who somehow spent six seasons here in Philly. Tyrese Maxi already the third longest tenure teammate of Joel Embiid in his career playing five years. Shake Milton tied with him for five years. Then in fourth place or tied for fifth place here, Paul Reed, Matise Styel, Ben Simmons, and Robert Coington. Continuity has been a buzzword for Joel Embiid for quite some time. And you see exactly why when lining up stats like that. It is insane that Furcon Corkmas is the longest tenure teammate the Joel Embiid has ever had. But for Tyrese Maxi specifically, he’s not far behind. Like this organization, the keys are gradually being put in his possession. And I do think that he’s going to drive this thing once the Joel Embiid era is fully over. So I’m not panicked about the Kendrick Perkins take just yet. I’m not saying that the Sixers need to completely relax on this is the results need to be better on the floor next season and that’s gonna be the number one thing that locks in a commitment from Tyrese Maxi. It is winning basketball games and I do think that this team is at least going to be in the mix more than was the case last year. But that responsibility sort of falls on Tyrese Maxi shoulders as well. If you are this guy, if you are this Max contract player, this former all-star guard here, it’s time for you to carry the torch and get some results yourself. And I do think that Maxi is more than capable of doing this. We know that he stepped up in major ways during that Knicks series where Embiid clearly did not have it physically, hitting logo three-pointers to tie up the game and send it to overtime, talking his trash to the New York fans on the sideline. Maxi’s got some dog on it, a dog in him, and I do think that it’s going to come out on full display this year. So, let me know what you guys think about all that. Do you have any concern for Tyrese Maxi forcing his way out? He does work with the powers that be clutch sports the most powerful people in the entire sports world. But I don’t think that the panic button should be should be being pressed on this just yet. Let me know if you guys are more panicked than I am. If you have any thoughts on any of this in the comments there. Appreciate each one of you guys for tuning into the video. Something Strange is Going On…

  1. we needed Bailey. morey needs 2b downgraded to running the draft. move PG or possibly Embiid and geta DAMN PF. we also need some more 1st round picks

  2. If there is no organization in the league dumb enough to take on that contract, then the Sixers must be the dumbest organization in the NBA for giving it to him.

  3. Perk is ALWAYS talking about someone wanting out, he just recently started the Ant Edwards might eventually want out of Minnesota literally a couple days ago, he's just doing his "hot take" thing that he always does

  4. What Perkins doesn't understand is that Maxey is trying to establish IS a culture. He is the one who goes out to meet the youngsters… Need I go on?

  5. Darel morey is solely responsible for the deteration of the sixers he gave us harden and gave embid 5 more years signed a injured all the time aging paul geroge nick nurse stinks to

  6. I hope Jo can be healthy enough to be productive this year, but if this season is a repeat of last season, he needs to think seriously about retiring. And I'm tired of him blaming other people and never looking inward.

  7. i think they are prepared for a split, they meaning both joel and the sixers. the team already has moved on, max is the new face of the team and everything is being built around him going forward. you could see this change last season. i think this is strategic by Joel to drop this information more or less saying they have tried to rush him back in the past. if he is not ready then it might not be him…. its not a good look when a players but teams medical staff and how they handle injuries on blast like this, really making the organization look like 2nd class. As a fan its not great but the logic in me sees this is just how it is in the NBA, Joels time is about up in philly

  8. Yes I hope everyone leaves this shit show of an organization. I’m sick of the owner and general manager, hopefully VJ and McCain ask for trades also. I want this owner to sell the team I want the general managers gone and the coach also……I HATE THE SIXERS

  9. 9:45 Sixers fans grade Maxey off 1 playoff series while playing in 5 but Joel gets graded off a few games while playing good in basically every healthy game. Kinda wild .

  10. I didn't realize Maxey had almost 2 steals per game. Reminding me more and more of Iverson 2.0, just doesn't have the weight of being the ONLY scorer like A.I has to be
