It’s 100% free Celtics content every single day. What’s going on, green teamers? You’re watching Celtics Day by Chat Sports. And on today’s show, got big news about Jordan Walsh. Yes, a player that has been on the back end of the Celtics rotation. A guy who’s been spending time in Maine and in Boston throughout the two years that he’s been in the NBA so far. But this feels like a potential make or break or last chance for Jordan Walsh. This is the last year that he has guaranteed money left on his contract. And next off season, he will be under a team option. This is a guy who has yet to really get much of an opportunity in the first two years that he’s been in the league. And largely part because the Celtics have been absolutely stacked, historically dominant during his rookie year, 1 through eight. And even last season, they brought back the same crew and were really running the same rotation for most of, if not all the season. He did get, you know, more of an opportunity in general. Played in 52 games this past campaign, but he really didn’t make the most of those opportunities. when he has seen time for the C’s so far. It’s been kind of littered with bad decision-m, not really a great overall dribbler on the basketball court and it’s been obviously a lot of garbage time minutes as well, but he has shot the ball incredibly poorly and and has not been much of an offensive threat to where he’s gained a spot in this rotation. And after a summer league performance that was really really solid and we’ll get into those numbers in just a moment. But a Celtics coach was interviewed during out there in Vegas and he said that this is sort of a makeorb breakak year for Jordan Walsh. He said the minutes will be there if he takes them. This summer was a good start. Yes, the summer was a good start over in Vegas. He played in four games for the season. Was kind of really their their best player for the most part. In one of those games, he only played 10 minutes and got ejected for, you know, kind of getting into a shoving match with Py Larson on the Miami Heat. Joe Missoula had actually texted him immediately after and once he got to the locker room, he saw those texts from the head coach. And those texts were very on brand for Joe Mazul. He said he loved them. But the encore production was solid for Jordan Walsh out there. He was registering a bunch of stocks and, you know, he was putting buckets out there and shooting the three ball at an efficient clip. And honestly, in the summer league, you don’t see a lot of really efficient three-point shooting. It’s kind of ugly basketball out there. So, for Jordan Walsh to kind of overcome that and show that he was kind of, you know, a step above or a league above most of the talent out there begging for NBA spots like that, that’s very encouraging for for Celtics fans. And you like like the coach said, the minutes are going to be there for Jordan Welsh. Like, this is an uninspiring rotation and more specifically an uninspiring front court. The Celtics still have a large portion of their talent in the ones and twos and obviously Jaylen Brown’s going to be playing a huge huge role this season. I’m excited to see what it’s going to look like with him being a number one option, but like the minutes at the three and the four off of the bench are relatively wide open right now. George Nyang, like how much is he going to be a factor for Boston? How long is he even going to be a member of this roster at this point? You got Sam Hower, you got Nimas K. We’ll talk about the wing depth and the guys down low in just a minute, but there’s a a lot of opportunity out there for Jordan Walsh. like a lot of guys are kind of in the same boat as him as unproven guys who haven’t a ton of haven’t had a ton of opportunity so far in their NBA career. So I feel like Walsh has just as good as any to kind of rise above and find a spot in this rotation as Celtics are going to be trying a bunch of different combinations and this is going to be a year where they’re leaning on a lot of their young talent to see who can emerge on these cheap deals and they have a lot of guys on those cheap deals. Like I said Baylor Shyman is a player who is still in a rookie contract. Sam Hower, we obviously know has a carved out role here, but beyond Brown Hower and I would assume Niang depending on how long he’s a member of the team. Like those are going to be guys who are going to be playing substantial minutes for the Seas this year. But like it would probably be the right move to probably lean on some of the other guys that you see on this list a little bit more like a Baylor Shyman who didn’t shoot so well in summer league. We’ll see what he can do on the offensive end. Jordan Walsh is like I said this is make or break for him. But you also bring a guy in like Josh Minat who is an uber athlete. You know, he possesses a lot of physical tools defensively as well to shine. Ugo Gonzalez, who I’m really excited to see play. He’s going to give you 110% effort on both ends of the floor. Um so there there’s a lot of guys in the same boat, per se, as Jordan Welsh. And he’s a player who has yet to um amass 10 minutes a night even in the short opportunities that he has gotten in the his first two seasons. So I’m throwing this out there right now. 15 minutes a night for Jordan Walsh this season. Over or under? You let me know down in the comments section what you think Joe Mazula will be giving to Jordan Walsh. For him to get 15 minutes or more a night, this is what he has to do. And it’s plain and simple. To be in Joe Mazula’s lineup, you have to be at least a reliable three-point shooter. So, he has to improve the shot that he’s had so far. Here’s what he had to say right before summer league started about the threat that he po imposes on the uh from beyond the ark. He said, “I don’t really think if I were to play in a big-time game that they’d respect my jump shot. I’d say in a real world and competitive environment, they would not respect my jump shot. So, what do I have to do to get to the point where they have to respect it and then they close out and make reckless decisions?” Because he is, you know, a lengthy athlete. He could take, you know, one, two dribbles and be at the rim if there’s a really, really uh committed close out to his outside shot. But defenses have yet to do that even in the garbage time that he gets. He shot 27% from the three in his first two years. and he’s always getting him up there. Like if Jordan Walsh is getting late game minutes, you know, at least a three is going up there and and he really has never been able to kind of find much of a rhythm. Um but he was solid in summer league. So that’s a good start. He’s going to have to improve from outside in order to find any sort of role on this team long term. Also, he’s got to try to stop being somebody that he’s not like he’s not a player who’s ever, in my opinion, going to be a reliable off of the bounce outside shooter. this guy who’s going to have to be play a complimentary role in order to be, you know, long-term fit in this in in the NBA. Like he’s not going to be an isolation player by any means. And that’s what he kind of said that he was trying to be what he when he entered this league. He said, “I just felt like I was forcing it and I was playing a lot of isolation games, doing a lot of step backs, over dribbling or going too fast. I was trying to imitate what they were doing.” He’s talking about Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown and that’s not my strong suit and that’s not where I’m at in my career. So, why not just play the role I’m going to be playing in and keep it simple? That’s what I started thinking going into this year. Play keep it simple. And I’m not sure if he was actually talking about going into last year or this upcoming one, but he said they’re not looking for me to do everything. So, do the simple things well every time. Defend, hit your jump shots when you’re wide open because defenses do not respect you and give effort on both ends of the floor. Don’t make a crazy bad decisions. Like, you’re going to be just fine if you kind of follow those three steps. And Jordan Walsh said that Jaylen Brown is his mentor in Boston. Just doesn’t need to be playing like Jaylen Brown’s going to be playing this year. We we need you for other things. We need you to be a lengthy defender who can guard multiple spots. We need you to be a reliable corner three-point shooter when defenses collapse in on Boston superstars. So, if he can just play a complimentary role, I I think he’s got as good a chance as any on that Celtics wing depth chart to, you know, be a reliable player for Boston because the physical tools are there. And if he can defend as advertised, that is going to be what makes him stand out amongst the crowd. Like Jordan Walsh is a little bit more physically gifted than a lot I think a lot of people realize. Um his calling card is going to be his defense. And I don’t have a ton of like you know super high volume like the defensive metrics to go out there and point to you, but like if you the eye test is says it’s going to be there. He has one of the biggest wingspans and biggest height to wingspan ratios that I’ve seen in this league. like 7 foot3 on a 6’6 player. That’s not normal. Those don’t grow on trees. And to have somebody who’s got those physical tools on the defensive end and the IQ is really something. And and and you’re going to at least have some sort of defensive floor when you have those physical tools. If he can put anything together on the offensive end, then I think that he’s actually got the best chance to emerge as a Celtics, you know, one of their guys off of the bench. That’s going to be a value contract down the line. And hopefully if Jordan Walsh can put that all together, then we’ll see big time minutes for him this season and beyond. We’ll talk more Celtics in just a moment. But getting hooked up with this awesome deal with our friends over at Fanatics, a 2024 Celtics Championship t-shirt. Let’s think about the good times because this season might be a lot of experimenting and not a lot of championship hopes. But 2024 NBA Finals confetti falling from TD Garden. I love that love that title. Love that t-shirt. And a free agency update before we get out of today’s show. We talked about Jordan Walsh potentially emerging, but a player who could potentially take some minutes for him if he ends up signing with the Boston Celtics is Ben Simmons. Ben Simmons is yet to make a free agent decision, but we did get a big-time update on when that decision may be coming. Brian Winhor of ESPN said the following said, “I’m told he’s probably going to make a choice in the next week.” And the teams that I’m seeing interested here aren’t uh exactly the top of the league NBA, you know, finals contenders. He said that the Kings, the Knicks, the Suns, and yes, the Celtics have all been connected to him. Now, in what capacity is are are those connections? I’m I’m not so sure, but uh I will say that out of those four teams, there’s really only one that I would say is a true contender in either conference next season, and and that’s the New York Knicks. Uh if he just wants to see if he can get a little bit more the vet minimum, maybe he could choose one of those other routes, maybe go to Sacramento. I’m sure they have a little bit of money to throw at Ben Simmons, but I would assume in all likelihood he’s going to be signing a minimum deal. He definitely would with Boston, and he definitely would be would be with New York, too. It’s going to be interesting to see what he prioritizes, but I I I don’t really think it’s that high a high high of a likelihood that he ends up choosing the Celtics. Um there’s, you know, definitely some opportunity there for him minutes-wise, but as far as, you know, contending in the Eastern Conference next season. This season’s roster looks pretty bleak right now, and I’m not so sure how better it is going to get um before, you know, the playoffs start rolling around. So, with that being said, what do you guys think? Should the Celtics sign Ben Simmons this offseason? Yes or no? There’s also a lot of drawbacks to signing him as well. has not really been uh the greatest player both on the court or off of it uh through so far in his NBA career. Just a lot of drama for a player who might not all be that worth it. So, yes or no. Should the Celtics sign him? Let me know down in the comments section. Make sure you are subscribed to the channel. 1. Smitty just doesn't want Simmons to join the Cs. Signing Simmons isn't the craziest thing the Cs could do right now. It's weird but it also actually makes sense. He can revive his career as he can just concentrate on facilitating and defending, not scoring. If the Cs can get the a version of Simmons of old who can pass, rebound, defend and go to the hoop in the open court on a 1 year, prove it, minimum contract, it may well be worth it for the Cs.

  2. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown would do well not to play isolation. They do not fit into the traditional role of Celtics players to pass the ball around and find the open man. Their selfish play was responsible for two blown 20-pt. leads against the Knicks.

  3. They are going to play a different style this season. Closer to the way the Pacers play. It's going to be less pullup 3s and ISO and more cutting and ball movement
