BREAKING: Celtics make SHOCKING Move…
We got some breaking news as the Boston Celtics and Brad Stevens just made a shocking move as they have just waved one of their roster spots in JDavidson now helping the Celtics to drop below the second apron and give them some more plausibility out there on the free agent market and trade market as well to make some more moves to give this roster a little bit more of a tweak for Joe Mazula. So, what could this mean for the Celtics going forward and what are the repercations of this deal? We’ll be diving into all of that and more on this episode of Celtics Digest. I’m your host, Bruce Veles, with my co-host Patrick Billings. And Patrick, a little bit of a wild one. You were getting into the door and some news just comes flying in right alongside with you. I know we were talking about how dry the news has been the past couple of days and then all of a sudden it hits you when it’s least expected, especially with a player like JD Davidson. We both didn’t expect this whatsoever. So, I mean, I’m glad that the the Celtics have some open options now and uh yeah, good luck to JD. Yeah, definitely good luck to JD. And we’ll be getting into that just in a little bit. But like I said, guys, let us know your thoughts down below in the comments section. What you guys ultimately think on the move and what you think could be happening on the horizons for the Boston Celtics down below in that comment section. But Patrick, let’s get into the news at hand today. We talked about it a little bit already in the introduction, but it was genuinely a surprise to you and myself kind of coming through in today cuz like you mentioned on our stream yesterday, we were mentioning it was drier than the Sahara Desert with with Celtics news. And now we’re seeing things coming in all around us as we see that the Boston Celtics have officially waved JDavidson. And as you guys know, JD Davidson was someone who played a long tenure within the main Celtics, was very solid with their team, has a lot of stats within that organization, was converted to a standard contract at the end of this season, but his contract was partially guaranteed at January. So, there was a little bit question mark what the Celtics would do with the roster spot in Davidson. They’ve already lost out on free agents that they have been linked to and guys like Damen Lillard and other avenues because they had a full roster spot. And now they get rid of that by waving J. D. Davidson Patrick. We also see from this as well that with doing this, the Celtics GLeague MVP is no longer eligible for a two-way contract with the Celtics, but could sign one elsewhere in the NBA and compete for a two-way spot. But the Celtics now have one open roster spot with no move imminent. Yeah, I mean, this is definitely interesting. It’s good for JD Davidson because we talked about it. We didn’t think that him nor Walsh could be waved and we kind of just thought that the Celtics were kind of in a weird situation. And JD Davidson’s only 22 years old still. He’s been around for a decent amount of time, younger than Baylor Shyman, if to put that into perspective. And I think that this is a perfect opportunity for him. The Celtics definitely just didn’t see a spot fit for him going into next year’s, you know, lineup. And especially with how next year’s looking, it’s definitely not a good sign, but I think that he’ll have a bigger opportunity somewhere else where there’s any places that need a lead guard. I think he’ll definitely be able to fill in some minutes as a good role playing guard. But with the Celtics, it just didn’t seem like there was that spot over here. Yeah, you mentioned obviously not them really finding a spot and that’s kind of tough because for the Celtics is a little bit of like an exploratory season. So, you would expect that those waves wouldn’t really come through. That’s why we were kind of hesitant on saying Jordan Walsh, JD Davidson could get waved because we were like, “Oh, well, the Celtics are in an exploratory period. They need these kind of players to be out there on the court to kind of showcase what they can bring. This is kind of a a testing season for them. a guy like JD could maybe make that impact still at 22 years old and still being a young product in the NBA. And even if he wasn’t going to do that, I thought, and we talked about this as well on the channel on streams and in videos, that maybe they’d do him some justice, right? Similar to what the Thunder did with Dylan Jones trading him to the Wizards, then getting Kobe Jones and waving him, you know, giving their player at least a guaranteed opportunity out there. Maybe the Celtics did try to do that, couldn’t find that for JD Davidson, and that’s maybe where he’s going to be signing on a two-way contract, maybe after once getting bought out. who will not be with the Celtics, but like you and I think, we’re wishing him the best of luck. Obviously, a dominant player within this main Celtics organization, went through the ranks and kind of grinded up with after getting drafted by this team a couple years ago from the University of Alabama. And I’m excited to see what he could really bring out there in the NBA. I don’t really know teams that have available two ways out there. Obviously, like I mentioned, the Celtics can’t really bring him in, but one that’s looking for a combo aggressive guard who can be a solid playmaker, facilitator, a little bit of a pest on the defensive end, but has developed his three ball and been a solid scorer as well. I think this is going to be a little bit of an intriguing piece for some teams out there. Yeah, I think he could bring a lot to some teams, especially in those rotational minutes. I don’t think he’ll be a starter, especially right away. But I think as a playmaker and as a shot maker as he gets a lot more confidence, kind of getting the ball and kind of getting things done a little bit a little bit more at a higher level. You know, he’s kind of coming in at these end of the bench minutes really coming in cold, sitting for 35 or so minutes and expected to come in and hit some threes and make some plays. I mean, it’s harder to make shots, but it’s easy to make plays. And he’s definitely capable of doing that. We saw what he did in the GLeague. He was absolutely dominant. And sometimes guys come up, they don’t get the opportunity like they should, and you land in this spot that he’s in. But I’m sure there’s a ton of teams out there that would love to have him even just on a two-way contract. Exactly. And I think on that two-way contract, he’s going to find some life. And hopefully once again, similar to where the Celtics with Maine, where he was able to find himself into a guaranteed spot. I’m hoping the best for JD and growing that in as well, trying to fight to be a rotational piece in this NBA, uh, as you know, as a, you know, solid secondary score for this lineup. That obviously is the best about JD Davidson. But with that being said, the Celtics now have an open roster spot. So what could be next for this team, Patrick, as we look forward? Unfortunately, without J. D. Davidson and as we like looked at earlier as well, Adam Himmosbach said that there is no move imminent as now at now, but as we see from Daniel Donaben, the Celtics now are under the second apron again after cutting JDavidson. So, this allows the Boston Celtics to have a little bit more flexibility here with this tax situation. It allows them to now have the option to consider bringing back a guy, maybe an Al Horford in free agency. It allows them to potentially get involved with a guy in Ben Simmons who they’ve been linked to over these past couple of days, but it also could spark some things out there on the trade market. Anthony Simon’s name has been mentioned still. We also have heard the rumblings around George’s Nang, Sam Hower, etc. still out there on social media. And ultimately, one of those guys could be traded alongside uh one of these moves here to help set help the Celtics shed some more salary and maybe potentially even free up some more space within this roster. So, Patrick, what is your best guesstimate for the Boston Celtics and what they’re going to do with this last roster spot or potential last roster spot? Well, first of all, you forgot a name. You forgot about Charles Bassie. Oh, I forgot about Charles Bass showing up out of nowhere. I think he deserves to be brought up in the conversation. Well, but I mean, Brad didn’t really think that Al Horford was going to be back with the Celtics. He kind of seemed like it was going to be that way. But I see this as the perfect opportunity to kind of get a little bit of a two for one and wave one of those guys and just keep the open roster spot and still try to get themselves under the tax and still even more below the second apron and put themselves into a better cap state cap space situation to make them feel a little bit more comfortable because they really wanted to get out of the second apron. I didn’t think that they were going to get out of it until the beginning of the season, but this is the first step in the right direction. And I think that there’s going to be a trade or two now because I didn’t feel that way. And I know you probably felt the same way as well. But now after this, I think it just opens up the gates for anything possible for Brad Stevens to go out and do. Now they can, you know, kind of aggregate some guys if I’m right on that one. Right, Bruce? They can aggregate some guys for sure. They can’t unfortunately aggregate Simons and Nain together. Now that those have obviously been confirmed, they cannot aggregate them with other players in values deals either, but they can aggregate a Xavier Tilman and a name is Kada or a Xavier Tilman and a Payton Pritchard. I’m just spitballing, not obviously going off of concrete, but you know what I mean. Just other names. A Baylor Shyman and a Jordan Walsh. They can figure out ways to do that. But they could also, like you mentioned, trade a guy like Anthony Simons. Maybe even do something similar. We discussed this before the show, like they did with Chris Porzingis getting two contracts back, right? that either helps save some money or maybe even get one contract back, get a third team involved, get some draft capital involved for the Celtics, and having them even shed more salary to be not only having that being a a good pocket, but also then still having an open roster spot to still pursue Alford, still pursue Ben Simmons, still pursue Charles Bassy like you mentioned. So maybe one of these guys on an exhibit 10day contract or converting one of these two-way spots to a regular style deal with Max Scholga or Amari Williams or Miles Norris looks really solid for this Celt for this main Celtics team. And I think that’s really the cure of curiosity. Now, I know yesterday we kind of broke it down saying they were kind of dry, we were getting dry news. The Celtics were really stuck now being with 15 roster spots, but now having that one open roster spot, the Celtics like to start the season with the one roster spot open. So, that’s something to keep an eye out for. But ultimately, I do think there will be some more moves on the horizon in maybe not the next couple of days, but next couple weeks and months leading up to October into training camp for the Celtics roster to still be finalized. Yeah. Yeah, and I I think I really do like the idea, now you brought it up, about the whole Porzingis kind of trade. And it kind of gives an opportunity for a guy like Pton Pritchard to finally crack into the starting lineup. If it’s a guy like Anthony Simons being moved and they bring in someone else that’s kind of like a nang, I think that just brings more opportunity for guys that have already been around. And if you’re kind of just exploring a lot of your different options, it’s a perfect time to do it. See what you got. Maybe you bring back an Alora with another open roster spot. whoever it ends up working out with the trades, Charles Bassie. And I think that’s the perfect opportunity to add on to that exploration kind of season that they’re trying to do. So, I think I like that idea just a little bit more than kind of bringing in a veteran guy like a Ben Simmons personally, but I kind of just want the cap and the salary to be a little bit more comfortable than it is right now because it doesn’t feel too comfortable still just being under the second apron. Yeah, we’re definitely still in a little bit of a weary waters here with the how the Celtics want to structure their cap, not only for this season, but for the future. And I’m sure Brad Stevens will be behind the scenes trying to work through these kind of deals. I’m sure they tried to find something for JDavidson. Probably couldn’t. That was resulted in just kind of waving him here at this point. And like we said earlier, wishing nothing but the best of luck for JDavidson, but Brad Stevens making a shocking move. Now the Celtics can have all those exploratory talks with the fan base on social media of what they can do next because now they finally have that roster spot to make that move. So let me know, let us know what you guys think down below in the comment section on what the Celtics should do with this new roster spot. Should they use it for a trade similar to a Porzinga deal? Maybe even for one for one for Anthony Simons. Should they use this roster spot to potentially go out and bring back Al Horford, Ben Simmons, Charles Bassie? We just have way too many guards already so I seen this happening. And he isn’t better than any of them not Simmons , pp or white he had to go
This means Simmons is coming…
I was expecting J D Davison to be waived. Not surprised at all.
Idiotic Move By The Celtics.
I would love to have Charles Bassey join the team.
Another Nesmith, really wasn't given the opportunity. Another 15yrs before banner 19.
Super athletic PG …a bit small but in a different era he would of been a solid bench guy
I’m not even gonna like the team I’m rooting for next year
This is wack
They need to get under that 2nd apron. More moves coming most likely.
Yesssssss 😂😂😂😂
Payton is not a starting point guard in the NBA… no disrespect. Just my opinion. Enjoy your videos.
They finally listening to me next hauser
I'd keep Simons and let Hauser go. Simons can attack the rim whereas Hauser is too one dimensional and streaky as hell.
Hate this move, JD Davidson is gonna be something special, rather waived or moved someone else from the bench…..
JD was an excellent prospect. But no one is a sure thing until he has done it. From the GM's POV this is a relatively painless way to get under the 2nd apron, which the Celtics HAD to do. Anyone who criticizes the move needs to come up with a better way to accomplish that goal.
THIS IS A MISTAKE… JD WILL BE AN INSANE GUARD IN A FEW YEARS… WHAT ARE WE DOIN….SMH
Why not get rid of Tillman
I don’t like this at all smh. I understand we are lacking in big man but Tilman should’ve been waived before JD smfh.
Not Davidson ……Davison
JD will break out on another team, and he will get paid. Sorry to see him go but we had way too many small guards. Baylor Walsh, and Hugo can all do time at very small forward if they want to go small next year. They want to tank anyway.
