Joe Dumars REVEALS Dejounte Murray’s Core Role | Willie Green’s Job on the Line
Joe Mars thinks DeJonte Murray is part of the core of the Pelicans going forward. I’ll tell you why has more to do than just with his oncourt play. Plus, we get hints at Willie Green’s future. So, let’s get into Joe Dear speaking to Ansscape.com, Mark Spears there about, you know, his revolution of the Pelicans. That’s really what it’s been. It’s been a revolution. You got some core pieces still here, Zion Williamson and some others, but it’s been a lot of big changes, not just in terms of the players, but clearly the approach. You know, I asked Joe Dumar on draft night what’s the message he wants to send to the league, and it was we’re going to be aggressive in every aspect of it. And whether you agree or disagree with the moves, it’s certainly been aggressive. I think I want to get into a couple of the comments here, the interview that he had with Anscape because I think it let you kind of get more understanding of what he’s trying to build, what he’s looking for here with the Pelicans. And one of the questions comes down to Deonte Murray. This is someone who’s basically going to have a bit of a loss season this year. Suffered the Achilles tear, you know, mid to late January, and that’s about a year-long injury. And while Murray I think is like a a guy who heals very quickly, you know, he’s going to come back probably come off of the bench and be on a minutes restriction, you know, for a couple of months and that might take them through the end of the season if they don’t make the playoffs. So, you know, it it puts him in a weird spot where this team desperately needs to win now because you don’t have your draft pick next year, but you’re going to get about $30 million worth of production that’s not basically playing for you or living up to that $30 million. It’s an injury. It happens. It’s not a great situation to be in. That’s why I’ve talked about trading him, looking at what they could do with Dejonte Murray because they kind of need to go allin on this season to make the most of what they did on draft night. But it doesn’t sound like according to Joe Dumar that Deontay Murray is going to be leaving the team anytime soon. And it might be that he views Dejante Murray as a core part of it going forward. So here’s I’m going to read you from this this interview here. Quote, the question is, what do you think about the PAL’s roster? take me through the changes you’ve made and the people you’ve kept. And Joe Dumar says, quote, I felt the core guys like Zion, Trey Murphy, Herb Jones, and De Jante Murray, I thought that was a really good group of guys all around the age of 25 years old. I looked at it from there and I said, “Okay, we need to build out and how do we complement each other?” I thought the core was really good there and I thought, “If you have a good core, let’s build out around that core with the type of players that we need.” And I thought Jordan P was a dynamic guard. I thought Sadiq Bay was the perfect guy to come off the bench and add depth to your team. I thought that Cavon Looney was the perfect guy for a team full of guys who are 25 26 years old. End quote. You know, it’s really that first line, that first sentence that he says, I felt the core guys like Zion, Trey Murphy, Herb Jones, and Deonte Murray. He’s putting Murray in with Zion Herb and Trey. Those three we know at least for next season are core guys. And while I do think they would be very open to trading Zion Williamson eventually if the value is good, that’s not the case now. So they’re kind of going all in around Zion almost by default. Trey and Herb. Trey with his extension kicking in this year. Herb just signing an extension. They’re clearly core guys. He’s putting Murray into that. He’s not necessarily putting Jordan P into that. He’s putting Murray into that. Or maybe he’s just kind of talking about the core as holdovers from the previous regime. But to mention Murray who’s not gonna play until 2026 maybe is rather intriguing to me and I was trying to understand this a little bit. You know, some of it certainly has to do with Murray’s play. You know, this is someone who the past two years in Atlanta averaged where did the numbers just go? 21 and a half points per game, six assists, five rebounds, shot 35.5% from three on over six attempts per game. you know, gives you a level of defense, a level of physicality that the Pelicans certainly need and look to add. He’s got good size at the point guard position, too. So, I think that’s someone yet that makes sense that maybe you view it like that. But coming off of the injury, you know, he’s not 25. This is someone who will be 29 when the season starts. Not like it’s old, right? Dude’s 10 years younger than me here, but isn’t like a 24 year old, a 23 year old along those lines. He’s closer to 30 than not 30 here. So to kind of call him part of the core I thought was a little bit interesting here. And then you read more of the interview and they ask a question. Quote, “Do you have any idea when Dejante will be back?” End quote. And the Joe Dumar’s answer I thought was really revealing here and that is where he says quote I don’t know yet. Medically I can’t say it. But what I can say about Dejante is wow to him because he’s got some character traits that I’m really impressed with. He really cares about the game. He cares about things being done the right way. I like that about him. I really am impressed with him. End quote. And this kind of mirrors some of what Joe Dumar’s talked about on draft night when asked about that Dejonte Murray interview where I don’t think he trashed the team. And I think some of those quotes are taken a little bit out of context with what he was going through and dealing with and the stuff around the team last year. He’s like, “I couldn’t get medical time. I couldn’t get court time.” And everyone I’ve talked with the team about that is like, “Huh?” Like we we have those posted. Everyone has it. Maybe in other organizations it’s just open whenever you want. I don’t think that’s the case. Usually it’s kind of all on a schedule and you know, he was on the schedule. So that’s a little bit odd to me. And I think maybe it’s also he just couldn’t mentally get himself there to do all of that stuff or didn’t feel right. And I think maybe that’s what he meant. But you know after that Joe Dumar said it’s like I immediately called Deontay Murray and we had a couple of conversations around what went on last year and what needed to change. And I think Joe Dumar’s views Dejonte Murray as a little bit of a culture setter here. you know, they’re it has more to do with his off-c court stuff, the characteristics, his demeanor, his approach, than the onc court stuff of what makes him a core guy. They’re looking to build a new culture. Look, I don’t I don’t think any culture is all that different from one another in the NBA, right? You want guys that work hard. You want guys that care about one another and fight as a team. All of you use all those kind of cliches, right? That’s necessarily diff it’s different, but not super different from what David Griffin or any other team is trying to do. But when you hear Dumar talk about the characteristics he looks for, getting to know the person, wanting the right type of approach and mentality and mindset, Murray definitely fits into that. And I think Joe Dumar is looking at Murray as a guy that can kind of help him evaluate this team for what went wrong last year and let’s make the proper changes to make it better going forward. And maybe that’s what makes Murray a core part of the team to him. This is someone who even while injured is going to push guys in practice. You know, he had said that Dejonte Murray had already reached out to him about getting the numbers, phone numbers for Jeremiah Fears and Derek Queen and reaching out to them and doing all of those correct things. So, I think he views Murray as a core part going forward. you know, the production on the court’s going to matter more than anything else, but right now those off-c court characteristics really matter to Joe Dumar, and that’s going to matter, you know, when it comes to Dejonte Murray and maybe a big part of why they’re not actively looking to trade him, you know, or or even trying to trade him when it comes down to it. Let me know what you think about Murray as a key piece even off the court going forward. There’s also a very revealing quote about Joe Dumar’s approach to head coach Willie Green. Let’s look at that. I’ll read you the quote, tell you what it says, and it says a lot. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. So, let’s get into the comments on head coach Willie Green from Joe Dumars because look, Willie Green is in the final year of his deal. It’s been a rockyish tenure here, I think, in New Orleans, and we’ve yet to see how good he can be truly as a head coach. And finally, I think we’re starting to get an idea of what this will look like under head coach or head coach under Joe Dumar here. And here’s the question from Anscape. What ultimately made you confident in keeping Willie Green as head coach? And here’s the response. Quote, I know Willie. When they were healthy, they were a formidable team. They had some success. This past season, they were decimated with injuries. I thought it was unfair to judge him on the season where the team was decimated and to not and not look at the job he did when they were healthy. I thought you have to give him a chance to have success here. End quote. This is about what you would expect him to say. That’s not like a glowing endorsement of head coach Willie Green, right? That’s not being like, he’s a really good coach. It was, well, we want to give him a proper chance. And that’s Joe Dumar saying, I want to come in and evaluate him for myself. And that kind of just says this season is the real test of Willie Green. Look, there’s enough talent here that even without Zion, should he get hurt, the whole thing shouldn’t fall apart. I’m not saying they’ll be good or make the playoffs, but it shouldn’t fall apart like it did last season. like the wheels fell off the bus. It was a dumpster fire. All of that last season, right, with all of the injuries that they had, you know, Zion went down and there just wasn’t enough overall talent, especially with other injuries to kind of make up for it. Now, you just have more, I would call it like dynamicism. I don’t know if that’s a word. I think I’ve said that a number of times, but you get what I’m trying to say here in players like Jordan Pool, Jeremiah Fears, Queen, you know, you still have, you know, others on the team. Trey’s going to take a bigger leap, have a bigger role, all of those things. There’s enough here where, you know, you can be competitive. You might lose, but you’re not going to get blown out every single night when it comes down to it. So, that means this is Willie Green’s opportunity to show who he really is as a head coach. Two years ago, they won 49 games, almost 50 games, and they looked dominant at times. At times, under Willie Green’s tenure, they’ve been first in the Western Conference. And while you don’t get banners or trophies for that, look, you don’t get there in December with it being a fluke either. That was before Zion hurt his hamstring and then missed the remainder of the regular season. So, there have been some very good and high moments under head coach Willie Green. This is going to be the true test for him this year, right? You know, this kind of is going to put him in position where it’s like, you’re going to go and coach, you’ve got to make the playoffs, right? like whether or not that’s a like a verbal mandate, it’s clearly a mandate here. This is not necessarily going to be about development and we talked a little bit about that on the show yesterday when we were looking at this where Joe Demar said he’s like we’re not trying to throw the rookies into the fire and all of those sorts of things. This is, you know, where we are looking to just go out and win games and the guys we can develop slowly, which maybe means you don’t play them right away or whatever it might be, you know. So, they’re going to go and try and win games. It’s going to be on head coach Willie Green to do that. And I think that also means he has the green light to not necessarily play some of the rookies heavy minutes to start. So, this is kind of like Willie Green’s team and his opportunity to show what he is. If they get off to a rough start, I would not be shocked if they make a move to fire head coach Willie Green sooner rather than later. That’s not a prediction. That’s not inside information or anything like that. That would be this dude’s in the last year of his deal. You can fire him. You don’t need to owe him any extra money beyond this year. And you have head coach James associate head coach James Burggo, maybe future head coach James Burggo, waiting in the wings. He didn’t get a head coaching job here. He clearly wants another one. I mean, every coach would and you didn’t let him go and interview or become a lead assistant elsewhere. The Pelicans actively blocked those kind of moves. You know, I also think it’s it’s somewhat telling of Willie Green’s reputation and how teams around the league view him where the New York Knicks were actively trying to interview head coaches that were under contract and teams said no. They did not ask to interview head coach Willie Green. They asked to interview his lead assistant, right? They wanted to interview Jason Kid. Who else was it? They asked to interview Chris Finch and maybe one or two others, but they did not asked to interview head coach Willie Green. That’s been reported at the very least, but they wanted to maybe hire his lead assistant, which I think is kind of interesting. Barago’s there. You know, I’ve been told before that he’s kind of like lurking a little bit in the shadows. Whether he’s actively doing that or not, I’m not sure. I think he’s just here to coach and try and do a good job and help the team win games overall. And should he be in a position to take over the lead seat, he will do so. But by not giving like a ringing endorsement of Willie Green in that interview, it’s Joe Dumar saying like, “We’re evaluating Willie Green right now. We think he has the ability to do good, but we’re going to find out. If he knew Willie Green was the guy going forward, they would give him an extension.” And the everydayers know, you really don’t want to go into a season with your head coach on an expiring contract. That can put you in a very negative situation in my opinion. So, if that’s going to be the case, look, Bergo is going to have, you know, an outsized role in this offense, as he should, especially as they try and kind of figure out something that’s going to work for this team and probably build more of a different, you know, a different offense than what we’ve seen before now that Brandon Ingram’s not on the team, now that maybe they’re going with a less Zion ccentric approach. And they’ve tried that before and it hasn’t really worked out. But, at a certain point, you’ve just got to kind of expect Zion Williamson is going to miss games. And so Bergo does need to design that kind of Bergo ball offense that everyone including head coach Willie Green buys into. But given that they’re evaluating Willie Green and we’ve seen Joe Dumar is willing to make big dramatic changes, I do think he’s on a very short leash to start the season. I don’t think he’s going to need to play the rookies right away, which is probably what Willie Green doesn’t want to do unless he feels they’re going to give him a chance to win. Maybe Fears does that. Maybe Queen does that. Maybe Pave does that. We’ll see. But if they don’t win games with some of the talent they have early on or if it looks bad, they’re going to pull the plug on that and they’re going to elevate Bargo to being the interim head coach and give him an opportunity to earn this job. And I do think that is a maybe a smart way to go about it. I don’t know if we’ve seen Willie Green like fully at the best of his ability and coaches can grow alongside players too. And we’ve seen some really good things under head coach Willie Green. We’ve also seen some really bad things under head coach Willie Green too. That’s why it’s going to be the win- loss record that we’re going to judge him on this year. If they’re winning games, cool. That’s what they got to do. If they’re not, it’s going to be time for changes sooner rather than later. Let me know what you think about Joe Dumar’s comments on head coach Willie Green in the comments down below on YouTube. Coming up next, final summer league game for the Pelicans. They’re 0 and4. Can they get a win in this one? Doesn’t even matter. But what are we looking for in this game? That’s what I want to talk about. That’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked On Pelicans. Today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans is brought to you by Open Phone. Pelicans 0 and4 taking on the Indiana Pacers on Friday. It’s an 8:00 PM Central tip off, which is just late night summer league action for New Orleans with a handful of these games. We’ll talk about this one on Monday. You know, I don’t know if Derrick Queen is going to play in this one. His hand was wrapped the other day. I hope he does. I hope that’s not a serious injury, but knowing how this tends to work, I don’t think you’re going to see him in this one whatsoever. I think they’re going to just keep him out and like not risk any sort of injury. You know, what I was told was they were going to examine this at a later date. So, it’s like you’re not going to really play him. So, I would expect not to see Derek Queen in this one here. So, it comes to the other guys on what do you want to see from them? So, let’s kind of run through it a little bit quickly of like what do we want to see from some of the Pelicans in summer league here and some of the other young guys kind of showing off what they’re going to need to do to try and, you know, make either the active roster or what you want to see them work on as we get closer to training camp and preseason. So, let’s start with Jeremiah Fears here. You know, he had his best game in their fourth summer league game, that loss to the Thunder. 22 points on eight of 15 shooting, six rebounds, six assists. What I want to see him do in this game is get big men a little bit more involved. You know, they didn’t play Eve Mei in the fourth game. I don’t think you’ll see me in this one here, too. But we’ve seen Fierce play downhill, attack, attack, attack, then kick out to open shooters. Look, I like that. Love that skill set from him. He’ll be able to do that at the NBA level. The finishing has progressively gotten better. Obviously, we want to see him finish well around the rim, but right now what I want to see him do is get the bigs a little bit more involved. You know, if Hunter Dickinson is starting at center, get him on a couple of lobs. You haven’t seen Jeremiah Fuse really toss up a ton of assists to Mei and Queen. I think he has three total to those two guys. Was only threw three summer league games obviously, but that’s not a great number. Mesi’s is best when he can kind of be a lob threat and you never really got to see that in action rather than just playing straight downhill and attacking the basket. I’d like to see Jeremiah Fears play a little bit more out of the pick and roll and playmake a little bit more out of the pick and roll. If you could see a lob or two to Hunter Dickinson or any of the other big men on the team, I think that would be ideal in this one. Should Mi play, lob it up to him, let him flush it down a couple of times, just try and make that a thing. That would be fantastic in my opinion. And that’s really the other thing I want to see from Fears in this one. I’m less worried about the three-point shooting than I am about the playmaking and the finishing at the rim. You know, Antonio Reeves has a real shot to make this team. He was on the team. They’ve waved him. Maybe they bring him back, maybe they don’t. If he wants to though, it’s going to be on his three-point shooting. You know, only played 15 minutes in the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Went 0 for two from three. He’s looked pretty good, I thought, in summer league. has looked like a guy, you know, who played a bunch of minutes at the NBA level last season. I’d like to see him just have a lights out game from three. That’s going to be kind of the biggest thing for him if he’s making threes. You know, I think there’s questions over does Jordan Hawkins, you know, pan out, develop like we’d want. Could Antonio Reeves get some of those minutes? Antonio Reeves has a chance here. That’s what you really want to see from him in this upcoming game. You know, similar thing for Keon Brooks Jr. You want to see the three-point shoot. It’s really going to be basically three-point shooting for like everybody else here. Keon Brooks Jr., you want to see the three-point shooting if he wants to have a chance. Lester Kenonz at the guard position is maybe the guy that they’re really going to give that opportunity to. He’s on a two-way already. 0 for four from three. The Pelicans have just not shot the ball well in summer league whatsoever. But at times, Kenyonz has shown the ability to make a three-point shot in pretty good volume. more depth on the wing and guard position is only going to be a good thing for New Orleans. So, Kenyonz being kind of at that spot, I think could be really great for the team, too. So, hopefully if he’s making a bunch of threes, they’ll keep him on a two-way, and that means he’s going to get some minutes at the NBA level next season. You know, you have Christian Shoemate, who I think is a fan favorite for a lot of people, and that dude is just a highflying athletic player. Show off the athleticism. like for him it’s just go out and and make plays in some capacity. Just go impact the game in a positive manner. I don’t think Trey Alexander has looked incredible other than the last game here. There’s a chance, you know, he maybe doesn’t stay on a two-way deal, though I think he likely will, but maybe the Pelicans will will mix it up with some of their two-way guys here. And I think someone like uh Christian Shoemate who would be a wonderful addition to the two-way group to just kind of have an explosive athlete that could develop into something, especially kind of being a bit of a local guy, too. You know, at the very least, I would expect him to play with the Birmingham squadron this next season, but he’s someone that you just want to see impact the game. He got a ton of minutes off the bench, the most minutes off the bench, 25 in the last game. I expect he’ll be in line for a big role in this one as well. You know, for Trey Alexander, it’s build off of what you did in this last game where he was seven of 13 from the field for 25 points, five of nine from three and six of six from the line, four rebounds, three assists, two steals. Show off that kind of activity. He had a tremendous year in the G-League last season. You want to see him keep doing that. It’s what we’re looking for in the final summerly game where some guys might not play too. I wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t see Jeremiah Fears in this one either. But we’ll be watching. We’ll recap it here on the Lockdown Pelicans podcast. And that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked On Pelicans. This week of Locked On Pelicans. As always, I’m your host JakeMadison, Nola Jake on Twitter. This is the Locked On Pelicans podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. See y’all next time.

Willie can't coach great players. He can coach plugs, guys trying to empress the coach.Established players don't listen to him. When he's hollering to put your hands up ,they don't. But when he tells the plugs to do it they ALL put there hands and arms and legs up.

If Brarrego's offence isn't getting it done,he gotta go too
And,how do the players feel? Its a players league. They make or break the coach.
Tom Thibodeau is proven
Jake it doesn`t take a rocket scientist to figure out, the way he takes out players during a game when the players are hot, his game strategy, changing players during a game ,Willie is not a head coach.
Let's frigging go.. How sad is it. That this is more rewarding than actually being a fan of the team? DQ dial this #. 1-800 get a clue. Jeez. Its not fun being a fan.
Something I noticed is the players dumars is targeting play with a edge to a certain degree
It was my understanding that Borrego declined the interview himself. He's obviously waiting to take Willie's spot. Borrego didn't have much of a better run in Charlotte than Willie has done in New Orleans.

Dejounte talked some smack, so what? No GM is going to trade for a guy sucking up $25M in the salary cap who won't be able to play 25-26.
Every dayer comment
Has Borrego had success? He has head coach experience but how good is he?
Dumars just needs to clean house. The coaching staff needs to go. Championship coaches have been getting fired left and right and you're going to keep Green because he made the play-in two times and made it out once.
What about all of the 10+-game losing streaks multiple times every year, the 4th quarter collapses every year, the 20+ turnovers per game every year, the 30 to 40 point blowouts, Zion still not having an outside shot, Trey rarely being anything more than a 3-point shooter, these players aren't being developed?
They should trade him but he has no VALUE coming off injury, negative comments, and that teams know the Pelicans are prepared to move forward without him. They won't get enough for him at this point. So, try making him believe he is core.
Hi Jake
Every😂
Go get coach Michael Malone New pelican in start winning some championships I don't understand These stupid owners in GM in New Orleans
how is Willie Green still our head coach
Murray is the leader of the team. The man wants to be there and seems like an adult in the room – I'm all in on keeping him.
We need to pursuit Dalton Knecht
