Trade Tyler Herro For Ja Morant? Pat Riley Stepping Down? Miami Heat Rumors Q&A

[Music] The NBA off season has officially started to dwindle down a little bit, if you will. So, on today’s Heat report, I wanted to stop, reflect, and answer some questions from the Heat fans. We put a community call for questions, and these are where the questions are coming from. So, if you want to be on a mailbag potentially in the future, we usually do answer questions from our community. Got to be subscribed. We’ll start with my guy Cogs 3. What’s the biggest mistake the Heat have made since signing Jimmy Butler? Obviously, that Jimmy Butler signing trade took place in 2019 off season when they traded away Josh Richardson and some other little things to get Jimmy to the 305. And to me, without a second of hesitation, the biggest mistake the Heat made after making that move was not pushing the chips to the table. In the Jimmy Butler era, Miami made the Eastern Conference Finals three times, winning two of them, which means they made it to the NBA Finals twice, where they lost in six games to the Los Angeles Lakers and then five games against the Denver Nuggets. Well, in between those trips to the NBA Finals, they did not make the necessary upgrades to the roster to take them from a contending team to the title team. And they missed out on stars along the way. The three that obviously are going to come to mind are Damen Lillard, Kevin Durant, and Donovan Mitchell. D Mitch and KD became available for Miami at multiple junctures when he was originally traded from Phoenix to Brooklyn the other way around. Brooklyn to Phoenix multiple times. They didn’t trade for him at the deadline. They didn’t trade him for him in the offseason. Same thing with Don Mitchell when he was traded from Utah to Cleveland. And then obviously Damen Lillard, we know how that saga played out. I don’t know if you can call it they were asking for too much. But to me, if Miami was willing to offer Hero and the rest of the draft picks they had for one of those three guys, they probably would have been able to get them. That wasn’t the case. Miami never did that. And then a championship was never won. I know a lot of people are going to probably mention the Terry Rosier trade. That certainly was a brutal one as well. but not pushing the table or ships to the table. Not trading hero and draft capital to get a third star alongside Bam and Jimmy, I think was the biggest mistake Miami made. If you did not get on today’s mailbag, but are subscribed, there’s another way to get my thoughts known. Hit me up on social media for more. I talk about Heat basketball every single day. My handle is nick_rolloff on Twitterx. Go give me a follow. You could ask me any question anytime. Germaine with a question. Would you trade hero to get a real point guard if there was a trade available? Yes. Short answer, yes. But I will say this, it has to be a clear upgrade for Miami for me to trade Tyler Herro. Obviously, the extension is going to come up in this conversation. He’s got two years left on his deal. this season at 31 million and then next season at 33 million before he is technically an unrestricted free agent in the 202728 off season. So yeah, that is something that comes into consideration, but I’m also not trading him just to trade him for a lateral move. Like it has to be a clear upgrade and I don’t think there’s many out there. Like if we’re going to be honest, like is Trey Young better than Tyler Hero? Probably. Is he that much of an upgrade over Tyler Herro? No. And is Trey Young a 4550$50 million player on a championship team? Not sure. I would do it for Jarant. Like if you could trade Jaw and maybe like or for trade hero in like one draft pick for Jaw, I would do it without a question. Um but I just don’t think there’s a lot of options out there for Miami. So, when you ask if they would trade here for a real point guard, I’m not sure Pat Riley and Miami would. I would be willing to do it, but I just don’t see one coming to fruition. Miami Heat fan, do you think we could do a big trade this season involving Tyler Herro or Bame at a bio? Okay. Um, I lean no. And that kind of just goes back to the question we just answered. I don’t see the Heat trading Tyler Herro for a clear upgrade. Now, I do think he is a lot more likely to be traded than Bam at a bio. Bam obviously turning 28 last week. I don’t see a world with a trade Bam. He is the captain. He is the pillar of this franchise. And I know some of you people in the comments do not like Adabio due to his inability to be an offensive juggernaut. But what he brings to the table in terms of his work ethic, consistency, and professionalism on the defensive end, that is everything Miami Heat fans should want out of their franchise player. And I could see them maybe selling Tyler Hero at the trade deadline or maybe next off season if no extension occurs. Like Hero wants 50 mil. Miami is not willing to give anything higher than 40. And it’s just like well this is going nowhere. We don’t want a Jimmy Butler situation. So we might as well just trade Tyler Hero now for draft picks or other assets and just move on. So if you had to make me choose which one is more likely, I would say Hero. But if we’re going to be frank here, knowing the Heatfront office, none of these two are going to be traded this upcoming season. But I do want to ask you, which player would be more likely to be traded? I don’t think either of them will. Want to make that abundantly clear. But if one did get dealt, which one do you think it would be? Tyler Hero, type Th. If you think it would be Bam, type EA. EA, what amount of money would you be comfortable for Miami to give Tyler Herro for his extension? It’s a good question. And if you are unfamiliar with the situation, he is eligible for a three-year $149.7 million contract. He is eligible to sign that deal anywhere between October 1st and October 20th of this year. If it is not signed in that 20-day window, he is not able to sign an extension until next off season where it could be four years for $22 million. But if he made all NBA, which means top 15 player in the league, it would be five years 380 million. And if I am extending Tyler Hero, I will tell you this right now. At absolute maximum, it is $40 million per season. The max that he can get right now would be an escalating contract where it averages out to $49.9 million in AAV. I am only doing 40 million max. And I think that there is a really good baseline for the reason I believe that. And I think it’s the Brandon Ingram contract. Like is Tyler Hero a better player than Brandon Ingram right now? I would lean yes because hero is more dependable. Brandon Ingram just consistently is someone who is hurt, is someone who isn’t going to give you 30 points. There’s the same old joke if it’s like, hey, if you need 30 points, Brandon Ingram’s going to give you 20. If you need 14 points, Brandon Ingram’s going to give you 20. He gives you the same thing every night, but that doesn’t really raise your ceiling. And to me, BI is a number three on a title team. I think the same thing for Tyler Hero. A hero has to be your third best player on a championship team, but you can’t play pay your third best player 50 million per season. So Brandon Ingram’s contract, Ojanobi’s contract where they’re getting paid just around $40 million is exactly the tier of players that Tyler Herro is in in my opinion in terms of building a championship roster, which is why I feel very strongly about this. And I’ve said it on multiple videos. If you are extending Tyler Hero, which I would love to do, it needs to be at 40 mil. If he asks for anything more, I’m out. Get him for less. Obviously in 40 million per season. That’s the most I’ll do. Doodle, do you think this season after the season Pat Riley could move Eric Spolster to the front office like Brad Stevens did and look for a different offensive mind? Well, I’ll say this. I do not think that Spolster would leave coaching to just join Pat Riley in the front office. It would have to be a situation to where like Boston, Danny A left the Celtics as their GM/President, went to Utah, and then Brad Stevens just replaced him. It would have to mean Pat Riley steps down and Eric Sper is the replacement. But the short answer is no. Pat Riley said it in his end of season press conference this summer that he does not have any plans on stepping away from the game anytime soon. He feels very good. He feels youthful for his age. He is 80 plus years old. Um, so it sounds like he is going to be the GM/President for at least two or three more seasons. But when he does step down whenever that time comes, I do want Eric Spolster to replace him. I think it would be a great transition for Spo to go from the coaching seat to the GM president seat and then find a new young head coach just like Boston did. It worked really well for them. Obviously, Eime Adoka was an unbelievable coach, but he had to get moved off of. and then they found another good coach in Joe Missoula. So, I think that’s the best way to go about it and I think Eric Spolster would be really good in that front office. If Casperis Yakonis plays well in summer league well this summer league is over. Do you think him or the Spolstra having Yak DaVon and Pel Larson all coming off the bench would be fine? I feel like it would work because Spo did play Larson at the three at points in this past season. Well, I do want to make it abundantly clear here that Pel Larson I would not even consider close to the same position as DaVon and Yakonis. I know Larson played a lot on ball for Miami in the summer league, but I don’t think that that is something you will see happen often in the regular season whatsoever. That is just not realistic in my opinion. And when you think of what Miami has on its current roster, where we currently stand, I just envision them starting their best five. Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong, but if they did that, this is what your starting lineup would look like. So then that would make your top two players off the bench. Da’Von Mitchell as your backup point guard slashpoint of attack defender and then Nicole Yovic as that sixth or seventh man first wing slb big off of the bench. And I love Casper Yakonis. I think it’s very clear that I loved him based off the pick on draft night and the way I have hyped him up since the selection in late June. But based off what I saw in the California Classic and at the Las Vegas Summer League, I am having a hard time finding inspiration and optimism that Yakonis will get a ton of playing time for this team. We know Eric Spolstra, although the plan is to play a lot of the young guys, Spo is here coaching to try to get wins. And do I think Yakonis can help provide Miami with a lot of wins this year? I really don’t. He’s 19 years old. He’s got a lot of stuff he has to work on. I like his competitiveness. I like his toughness. I even like his defensive ability. It’s impressed me with what I saw at summer league and that’s been the biggest surprise for me. But he is not ready to I think be a lead ball handler. He needs to tighten up that handle. Needs to tighten up his conditioning and I don’t see him getting a lot of playing time for Spo. So I think the main guard rotation is going to be Powell Hero Davon. I think Yakonis could get sprinkled in at times but not have a large role. And then like I mentioned, Larson is a two or a three, so he’s not even in the same type of play style as DaVon and Yakonis is, so it doesn’t really impact me whatsoever. Aloo, should Josh Christopher get playing time this season? What type of impact do you think he would have if he got at least 13 minutes a night? He has a playing style we haven’t really explored to its fullest potential yet. Well, Aloo, I hope you’re sitting down for this. He is no longer on the team. I’m sorry to break that to you, but if you watch summer league, he was not playing with us on summer league. He is not under a two-way contract. He is not inside the Miami Heat organization. It is similar to Isaiah Stevens. Stevens was not resigned to a two-way deal. He is with a different club. Same thing with Josh Christopher. Um the only player that was retained from last year’s two-way squad was Kashad Johnson. He has a standard contract, but Christopher Stevens, the three or two of the three two-way guys a year ago, not with the Heat anymore. Well, I think Aloo is going to be sad about this when he hears it. But let me know your thoughts. Are you guys sad that Josh Christopher is gone? Type laugh yes, type Ben for no. I knew I know he hooped in the summer league last year. He hooped in the G-League, but the truth is he is not an NBA caliber player that will impact a rotation. So, to me, I’m not sad. Sorry. All right. Final question on today’s show. Shout out to SGT Trickshot Legend 3050. Are the heated top 4C team in the Eastern Conference? I think they could be. I’ll be honest. I showed this graphic on a show a week or two ago, but I made a tier list of every team in the Eastern Conference, and I stand very firm on this. The top three teams in the East without a question, the favorites to win the conference and represent the East in the finals are the Cavs, Knicks, and Magic. I don’t think that is going to change unless some crazy move happens. I put the Heat in that second tier with Atlanta and Detroit. I think the Norman Powell addition is just so good. He’s going to be so awesome for Miami offensively. It also pushes Andrew Wiggins back to his more normalized role on the offensive end, so he’s not forcing anything. It will just create a more well- balanced offense and team. And with Hella burn out for the year, the Bucks roster taking a step back, Tatum out with no Drew Holiday and Porzingis, and I do not trust Philly. Like, I do think Miami is in a tier above those other teams that have injuries and declining rosters. So, if you’re asking me if the Heat can be a top four team in the Eastern Conference, I think they could. I would still probably rank Atlanta and Detroit ahead of them. I think they’re in the same tier, but I would give the slight edge of Detroit and Atlanta. So, if I had to put gun to my hat, I think Miami would be out of the playin. They would be a top six team this upcoming season. I think it would take a lot for the to go right for Miami for them to be the top four seed in the East. They would have to stay healthy for the most of the season. I think maybe an injury would have to occur to Atlanta or Detroit because obviously the Pistons were better than us last year and they’re only getting better. adding Caris Levert and Duncan Robinson with improvements internally, bringing back Jaden Ivy as well, who missed half of the season last year. Atlanta gets Jaylen Johnson back, they add Christophs Porzingis, they add Nielle Alexander Walker. Like, they have such good improvements to where Miami, I think, improve Norman Powell, but not to the level that Atlanta and Detroit did. So, I think Miami could be a four seed if things went their way in the injury luck and everything clicked for the Heat. But I would probably have them as the sixth best team in the Eastern Conference right now. But absolutely still in that same tier where they could beat the Pistons or Hawks in a sevengame series when it came down to it. All right, that’ll do it for today’s show. As I mentioned earlier, if you did not get featured on this mailbag, make sure you’re subscribed to get potentially on the next one we ask for questions. 1. Trae isn't a big upgrade?? The herro delusion is crazy😂 Trae took Boston to 6-7 games by himself in the playoffs. The dude worst year was Tyler best year. And he is an insane playmaker who can get his own shot off. There is a reason the dude is averaging 10+ assist a game. He gets players involved constantly and Herro just doesn't do that.

  2. i would trade tyler herro after watchin him during the playoffs this year. always having a hardtime to get open or pump fakes all his shots for a pass when hes our better shooter, he gives up his shot to much n forces miami to have bam shoot the quick 3pt shot in when they trying to comeback cus hes not open or gives it up too late. he will never be our guy to take over games when we need em too. it felt like he was not tryin to get open during the playoffs like an act to me so he wont get the shot force the comeback on another player not him when hes the only good shooter we got

  3. I am not so sure Spo would be a good GM, and I also don’t think he would want to give up coaching.

Not that it matters what I say, but I’m not high on Spo right now. No one should be after the last two seasons. For me the measure of a good Coach is if the team looks well coached, and they definitely have not the past two seasons. He’s not even playing guys in the right positions.

This is his last chance with me. If they aren’t at least a 46 win team, I am out on Spo.

  4. I would definitely trade Tyler. I don’t care what he’s done, all that matters is that he’s garbage in the playoffs. I’m not that desperate for ANYONE that can score 20+ ppg. His defense is inexcusable. Defense is half the sport.

  5. I would trade Tyler and draft pick for Trae. today!!! Nobody is giving up JA Morant for Tyler Herro and a pick 😆.. You going to need more than that. The rest of the NBA sees Tyler as a over paid role player. So for Ja you going to need Herro and Highsmith at least two picks
