Mavericks Executive’s BOLD PREDICTION | Latest Mavericks Rumors On Kessler Edwards
Could [Music] a familiar face be returning to the Dallas Mavericks? That’s what we’re discussing here on the show today. Welcome in to Mavericks today by chat sports. Jeffrey Cooperstein here with you guys. Could Kesler Edwards potentially be returning to the Dallas Mavericks? It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility. As this was reported earlier uh this week by Mike Curtis who had this to say on Kesler Edwards. He said Edwards attended the end of a post summer league practice with several veteran Mavericks including PJ Washington, Max Christie, Jaden Hardy, and Dwight Pal. It’s not surprising given his recent relationship with the organization, but it’s definitely interesting. And as it currently stands, Kesler Edwards is a free agent and has not signed with any team. However, he is not eligible to sign a two-way contract here with the Dallas Mavericks because of his eligibility. He has played four seasons in the NBA. And if you have to have four or less in order to sign a two-way deal, so if Edwards is to sign with any NBA team, it would have to be for a standard NBA roster spot, which the Mavericks already have 16 of. And the limit going into the season is 15. So you can just kind of do the math there. I will say this about Kesler Edwards though, he was fantastic post the Luca Dantage trade where he was really put in an uncomfortable situation. Edwards basically was playing center for most of the second half of the year because Dererick Lively was hurt as was Daniel Gaffford. So they put the 67 Edwards in there and he absolutely held his own. After the trade he averaged 7 and 1 half points, four and a half rebounds and shot it well. 53% from the field, 47% from three, even though those were on limited attempts. And look, he filled in very admirably despite playing out of position. I think in a perfect world, Edwards is a little bit of an undersized four, probably even a three here on most NBA teams. But the Mavericks were asking him to play the five because they really had no healthy bodies as AD Lively and Gaffford were all hurt. And the Mavs don’t even make the playin without Kesler Edwards and his contributions to this team. So, I do think that there is a role in the NBA for him somewhere. Now, the issue is will he be able to find a guaranteed contract with any other team. That remains to be seen as maybe he comes into camp as a training camp body for whether it be for the Mavericks, whether it be for somebody else and they can find a role for him because you he showed that his versatility is certainly there um with him his ability to play center even though it was extremely undized. But like I said, when you look at the Mavericks roster, they already have 16 guys under contract. I did remove Jaden Hardy from this graphic cuz you can only fit 15 guys. And I believe he is going to be gone. So the Mavericks roster is full. So the only way that Edwards is on this team is number one, if the Mavericks were to cut a couple of guys, or number two, if they were to sign him to a training camp exhibit 10 deal, non-G guaranteed, and they just wave him after the preseason. So, unfortunately, I don’t see a spot for Edwards on this roster. Although, I really like what he brought to the squad last season. It just doesn’t seem like there’s a fit for Kesler Edwards here with the Mavericks this season. But, wherever he ends up, absolutely good luck to him because like he filled in extremely admirably for the Mavericks last year. What say you guys though? Should the Mavs bring back Kesler Edwards? Should they make a couple of roster moves to try to fit him in to one of those 15 roster spots? Type Ezra sign or type P for pass down there in the comment section. This will be the pin comment on today’s show. You may get hit with the YouTube ad break here in just a couple of seconds. I think the same goes for Kai Jones. A lot of you guys have been asking about Kai Jones in the comment section. And uh he’s in a very similar situation as Edward Edwards is going in to his fifth year in the league where he’s not able to sign a two-way contract, but the Mavericks don’t have any roster spots in order to bring Kai Jones back. I think Jones also played pretty well given the Maverick’s circumstances last year and maybe he finds himself on in in an NBA training camp somewhere. Maybe he finds a spot over in Europe, but I don’t think the Mavericks are going to be bringing back the former big man out of Texas this season at least. We’ll see what happens. Maybe he’s in the G-League with the Mavericks and if something crazy happens, he could end up with the big club. But as of right now, I don’t see a spot on the roster for either Kesler Edwards or Kai Jones because they already have a full roster, which is why I still think that Jaden Hardy and Olivier Maxon’s Prosper are the two most likely candidates to be traded here by the Dallas Mavericks. We haven’t heard anything on either front as to whether they’re nearing a deal or nearing a decision. And because they really don’t have to. One of, if not both of these guys will be gone by October. The Mavericks won’t start the regular season until the second week in October. May the third week in October, I suppose. But they’re really just not going to have to make any of those moves. And they may even go into training camp with 16 guys on the team. And maybe they let Omax and Hardy battle it out for that final roster spot. It It certainly is between those two. Now, if it were me, I would just I would have cut Dwight Pal and would have let him just pay him his 4 million for him to go the other way, but it doesn’t seem like they want to do that because the Mavs want to keep that veteran presence in the locker room, the longest tenur Maverick since December of 2014. So, he’s going to stay on the roster there as well. Transitioning over to what a Maverick’s executive had to say. Now, I’ll preface this by saying we’re not exactly sure who this is coming from, but Keith Smith, who did have this report, was is a pretty reputable source here, and he said a Maverick’s executive, unnamed, told him, “Think they will be contenders come playoff time.” So, here’s what this Mavericks executive had to say to Keith Smith here, NBA insider. Whenever you trade a truly great player, it’s going to hurt. We love Anthony Davis and we feel like we’re in a good position to have a great team moving forward. With better health this year, we’ll be near the top of the conference going into the playoffs. That’s the goal. And of course, that’s the goal. That’s the goal of every single team here in the NBA to be at the top of your respective conference come playoff time. So you don’t have to play in that play and you get the five or six days off between the end of the regular season and the first round and maybe even you have homec court advantage in the first round. That is absolutely the Maverick’s goal. Now, whether they’re able to accomplish that is a different story simply because the Western Conference is just an absolute gauntlet here this season. Like, the Mavericks are going to have a hell of a lot of work to do. I right now, this is how I tier the Western Conference. I have three playoff locks in the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, and Houston Rockets. I think these are your three best teams in the West, and I don’t think it’s particularly close. I love what Denver did this offseason with the acquisition of Cam Johnson. The Oklahoma City Thunder, obviously the reigning NBA champ, and they’ve added to their squad as well. And then Houston with the signing of Dorian Finny Smith and the trade for KD. I think they’re the third best team in the West. As we say it right now, obviously this is all subject to change, but these are my top three in the West. And I think the next tier after that, there’s a group of about seven teams who will be fighting for those top for that fourth, fifth, and sixth seed in the West to try to get that quote unquote buy and skip the plan. You have the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers, the Grizzlies, the Mavs, and the Spurs. And this isn’t in any particular order. Like the Mavericks could easily finish fourth. You could have the Timberwolves finish fourth. I think the Lakers have a good chance to finish at the top of that. The Clippers as well. They’re always a consistent regular season team, even if they don’t get the job done in the playoffs. And the Spurs will certainly be much better it with Victor Webmanyama coming back. They added Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant to the fold in the draft. So, a lot of teams have made improvements this season, and it’s going to be really, really difficult in the Western Conference once again. Like, if the Mavericks were in the East, they might be one of, if not the favorite to win the Eastern Conference. But unfortunately, such is life out west with Dallas. And they’re going to have a hard time getting into that top six just given the competitive nature here of the Western Conference. And then the bottom three teams, I think these teams are going to be an absolute joke this year in the Sacramento Kings meet at Suns and New Orleans Pelicans. I don’t think either of those teams will be competitive and they will be fully fully immersed in the AJ Deansa sweep stakes. So in summary, the Mavericks have their work cut out for them and then some given the competitive nature of this Western Conference. And they also are in an extremely difficult NBA Cup group, which means they’re going to have some difficult national TV games that they’re going to have to go out and win. But I’ve said this all summer and I’ll say it again, it all depends on how healthy this team is. If they can get 65 games out of Anthony Davis, if they can get 65 plus games out of Derek Lively and Daniel Gaffford, if they can get 70 games out of PJ Washington, and if Cooper Flag is all that in a bag of chips like we think he is, then they do have a legitimate chance to be a top six team in the Western Conference. But it all depends on this team’s health, which I think is their biggest worry heading into the 2526 NBA season. So, predicted for me down in the comments section, what seed will the Mavericks get this season? Do you think they’ll be a top six seed? Will they be in the NBA play? And once again, let me know down in the comments what seed in the West you think the Mavs will have after 82. That will do it for today’s show, guys. Mavs rumors on Kessler Edwards have circulated, with Edwards joining the Mavericks for a practice after the 2025 NBA Summer League concluded alongside other vets like P.J. Washington, Max Christie, Daniel Gafford and more. Will Mavs GM Nico Harrison bring back Edwards to the Mavs roster? Dallas’ roster is already at 16 players, not giving the Mavs tons of flexibility. In other Mavs rumors, an unnamed Mavs executive said they could be competing in the 2026 NBA Playoffs at the top of the western conference if Anthony Davis can stay healthy.

What seed will the Mavs get this season?
We've got you covered throughout the 2025 NBA offseason: http://www.youtube.com/@mavstv?sub_confirmation=1
I think we're going to see like a 3 for 1 trade soon. Clear out the end of the bench to make room for Exum and Edwards on minimums. I think the 3 for 1 includes Gafford and Edwards can be a stretch big.
Pass
Ahhhhhhh Mavericks
Top 6 seed
Be interesting to know if the organization likes Prosper's or Edward's upside more. They are similar players in a lot of ways. That aside Hardy no longer seems like a fit on this team.
Bring back Kai Jones get rid of Dwight Powell
Not interested. Pass
I think so probably Prosper, Powell and probably also Hardy (but I would like him to see not as PG but as a SG, SpotUp Shooter, I think so he could create better and will be a usefull scorer from the bench in the later Flagg Years) will be available if something can happen. Please don't do stupid moves.
And then we also only have one free Roster Spot. Probably for Edwards or Kai Jones.
then probably trade also caleb martin and bring in both of them
Between Edwards or Jones. I think Edwards has more versatility however if AD refuses to play the 5. Then you have Gafford, Liv & Powell, ( if you release Powell then Jones is a no brainer. ). For wings Flagg, AD, PJ, Naji ( then OMax & Edwards, throw in Klay & Christie we simply have a log jam with Wings. Thus if we can only pickup Edwards or Jones, Edwards is the better player but Jones is the better fit.

We need more guards, not 4s
