Now, recently via ESPN, an anonymous scout uh said that hey, Harper has the makings of making Darren Fox perhaps expendable down the road for the Spurs. We’re going to buy that. We’re going to sell that. We’re going to talk about that. Then catch up some Spurs news you may have missed. Preseason schedule is out, you know, already like like we’re not even close. It just feels like the NBA is like year round. Doesn’t stop, right? We’ll get into that and uh talk about a Fox massive injury. Yeah, I don’t know. Spurs fans went wild over the weekend. We’re going to talk about that and more. Let’s go and bring in our guest Matt Guzman. He is with Spurs on Sports Illustrated. Be sure to follow my next at Matt GZA. Um Matt, are you dealing with a massive injury that may keep you out of all next season? You know what, some sources have said that, some haven’t. So, it depends on who you believe, but uh I feel pretty good right now. So, I’ll Well, well, because well, because you have to you have to cancel uh dinner plans with your family and we we just try to put two and two together. We say, “Oh, you know, no gota be Matt dealing with a massive injury. That’s the only reason why he’ll do that.” Yeah. My my parents weren’t thrilled, but yeah, I had to cancel. Exactly. Um Yeah, we’re pretty much uh talking about the Spurs fans going crazy this weekend about a rumored massive Fox injury. Matt was the one that calmed everybody down. We’re gonna talk about that in just a few minutes. Well, welcome back, Matt. And we’re in it, man. This is the thick of it of the NBA offseason, isn’t it? This is it. There’s not much going on. So, I guess every little bit of news kind of stirs up a frenzy. Yeah. Even Lo Spurs on offseason uh mode right now. We’re just doing about two, three week, you know, three lucky, you know, if there’s something to talk about. But I definitely can use the break. I’m pretty sure you can use the break before the Spurs get going uh in October. More on that in a bit. But Matt, you are here to discuss uh our first topic which is Dylan Harper and Dear Fox. Uh for those y’all, you probably already know already. It was a via ESPN article where an analysis scout pretty much said that or it was an exact scout exact but he’s somebody within the workings of the NBA said that Dylan Harper has the potential to make Dear Fox expendable should he be the real deal and live up to the hype. Let’s going to use this graph. I haven’t used this graphic in a while, Matt. See if I can find it here. There it is. Look at Look at that. That awesome work I did, man. That took me all of a day. Took me like two seconds to make that. All right. Well, welcome to Locked on Sports. Buy or sell. We’re going to buy or sell this. All right. Um, start it off. Uh, what do you think? You think Harper has the makings of making Dar Fox expendable? You know what? I’m gonna sell it. I’m I’m not gonna I’m not going to buy this tape. But I think that I might be remiss to to leave out a couple things. I think part of what makes this claim so outlandish or, you know, audacious, whatever you want to call it, is that these players are on completely different timelines. You know, Dylan Harper was not expected to be this all world, all generational prospect the way that Victor Webbyama was or the way Cooper Flag was touted. you know, rely on Williams and name your guy. And that’s not to say he’s not going to be great. You know, there’s a there’s a really good chance that he becomes a real impact player for the Spurs next season as as soon as next season. But Dearan Fox is, you know, several seasons into his NBA career. He’s made an allNBA team. He’s made an all-star team. Like, the Spurs traded for him intentionally knowing what they could get from him. What what could happen when you put Fox next to Victor Webyama and now you have this rookie. the rookie is not going to make somebody like Darren Fox expendable, especially not next season, especially not the season after that, right? You know, because even if he has that talent, I mean, the the looks, you know, the Spurs are going to give the benefit of the doubt to Dear Fox, who they traded for as an allNBA level point guard to do what he needs to do. And I I think that that’s just, you know, they’re on two separate timelines here. One is several seasons in with all NBA accolades and one is a rookie who will be great, I’m sure, who has great potential, but they’re just not really on that same trajectory to make one another expendable. Yeah, we’ll get to the other side of the coin of why he does in just a few minutes. But as far as talking why he doesn’t, uh, you’re right, the timelines are different, also to Fox’s season, as you mentioned, and Harper’s not. Also, too, we really haven’t seen Harper go against legit NBA competition. Not knocking summer league, but summer league is summer league. You can’t even really put too much stock in priest. a little bit, but not too much as when he’s like, let’s just say month five or six already in the NBA season, then we can really make it an assessment on where his trajectory is going. But he has all the makings of being a stud on the court. But as of right now, no, I don’t think he makes him expendable at all. you know, because I’m pretty sure Mitch Johnson, if it comes down to like late game situations or they need a veteran presence on there, and he’s probably going to opt for Fox versus Harper uh in those situations. So, right now, he’s not making him expendable at all. And also too, we still Matt, we we don’t know how him and Wimi and the rest of the crew work together at all. we have a very minimal sample size of how Fox can really impact the team on a season basis versus just a couple months that last season. So, we still don’t know. I mean, I get it. I see what the scout or the anonymous person via ESPN was talking about. We’ll get to that in a bit, but as of right now, no. Again, zero NBA experience from Harper. Uh, but even in the summer league, you you were there the summer league. Matt, tell us what you saw from Harper out on the court. Yeah, I mean, like you said, he looked good. You know, he looked like he was able to get to the rim with East regardless of who was guarding him. He looked like, you know, there was a few things that obviously he’s got to clean up the shooting. You know, just getting back to the the feel of of basketball. He, you know, he played two games and those were the only two games he played in four months, right? So, there were parts of his game that looked a little sluggish, that looked like he was still figuring out how to get back into it. On top of it being a different pace than he’s used to, on top of it being a further three-point line, on top of, you know, this and that, there are a lot of things that kind of factored into that. But still, you know, through all of that, all the things that he had to adjust to, he he logged 16 points in his debut and made it looked pretty easy. I mean, it was a fairly efficient outing for him against Cooper Flag and the Mavericks. and you know the Spurs ended up getting that that victory over them and I think that that was just you know he definitely proved that he’s ready to join this roster and and begin to make an impact. He looked good but like you said we don’t have any sample size for you know this legitimate NBA defenders that he’s going to be facing or you know one of his defense is one of his his bright spots. We don’t know what it looks like to guard the star point guard or the star shooting guard from a team and so I still a lot more that he has to show. Yeah, I definitely liked what I saw to Harper during summer league. Sure, it was just two games at most, you know, that was it. But even in the second game, I liked how he bounced back from a poor performance in the first half because he was kind of a factor for the Spurs in that second game he played, but then he really turned it on the second half of the second game that he played. I think he finished with like 16 points um along those lines. Really helped the Spurs. I believe they got the W in that game. So, nevertheless, uh, you know, in a summer league, you just want to look at what he does, right? Not necessarily look at the stats. He didn’t lean on it so so much. No, you just I liked that X factor. How he was able to bounce back from a struggling first half and shined in the second half. But as of right now, no. As of today, no. No. I don’t think Harper makes Fox expendable. What about down the road? Yeah, let’s talk about that when we get back right here on Lockdown Spurs with Matt Guzman. He’s with Spurs on Sports Illustrated. Make sure to follow him on X and Matt GZAN. More about Harper and Fox in just a couple seconds. Hey, but first I want to talk about Monarch Money. We’re back right here on lockown spurs joined by Matt Guzman. He is with Spurs on Sports Illustrated. Uh during the break we found out he’ll be out next season due to a massive injury he suffered uh you know this off seasonason. Matt, I hope you get better, man. You know those rum the rumor mills pick it up about you and your injury. They do. I know. you be okay threads. I’ve seen my name, you know, all over the place. So, yeah, more on that in a bit about Fox fans and injury. Injury. Yeah, we’ll talk about that in just a few minutes, but right now we’re talking about Fox and Dylan Harper. Uh, recently there was an article via ESPN and in that article there’s an anonymous scout/exec that said that, hey, Harper has the mic to make Fox expendable. So, we talked about how he didn’t or he doesn’t, I should say, as of now, but what about down the road? Could that happen? And Matt, I’ll start us off. I want to say, yeah, I think it could happen down the road. Um, there’s so many I think it’s just not just with Harper himself. More on that in a bit. But if you look financially too, you know, could there be a point where maybe they’re going to have to, you know, pay him big bucks and could the Spurs team survive in this apron world of having to pay a Fox potentially Steph Castle big money? Obviously, we know Wimy’s going to get paid and then there’s Harper. The list goes on and on. So, there there could be some high salary to be paid down the road. Could Fox be kind of somebody gets hit with collateral damage that way and say, “You know what? We can’t afford to pay all these things. We have this apron we got to worry about. Look what happened in Boston. Look what’s happening right now with so many other teams trying to avoid that situation.” You know, could the Spurs be in that situation? And could Fox be that person perhaps? You know, we don’t know because he’s probably going to get paid in a couple weeks in August when that extension is up. Again, if Harper pans out and he is the real deal, then they might have to pay him down the road. So, that’s the financial side of things. But, as far as on the court itself, I think, yeah, there uh I think he’ll fill out as obviously he gets older. He’s going to get bigger. He’s going to get stronger. I think he’ll be able to do more offensively than maybe Fox can. And I think the key to all this is his three shot that’s got to go down. The long distance shooting’s got to go down. But his he just looks he looks like a guard the Spurs have never had before at the at that position point guard. The closest I could think of was De Jonte Murray. That’s the closest comp I could in recent years where he had a big tall guard with the ability to get to the rim slash creativity knock down the outside shot. But I think Harper has to make his be maybe even better than De Jante at an earlier stage than De Jonte was. Uh so I think eventually that could force you put all that together. I’m trying to get you know him on the court both ends of the court the financial situation the NBA world lives in aprons and all that stuff. I think that could possibly happen but again down the road what do you think? Absolutely and you’re spot on. I think you when it comes down to it, whatever the the exec said right now about Fox, you know, has some truth to it and that there could be a situation down the road where the Spurs don’t feel the need to keep both around, you know, and like I mentioned, they’re on different timelines. So perhaps, you know, like we mentioned, Fox is up for an extension in August, four years, 220 million, something like that. You know, he’ll get paid. And what I’m thinking is that for those next four or five years, however long he’s still on, because this will be an extension. So, you know, he’d be on the books for five seasons and you know, maybe by the last fourth, maybe by the fourth or fifth year of that, that’s when Dylan Harper really starts to cement himself as like this guard that you know, he can be projected to be somebody like Kate Cunningham or like you said, a better Dejante Murray. And at that point, that’s when the Spurs kind of, you know, maybe they start looking at, you know, it’s not that Fox is bad and we really like this guy, but would it be worth it to use his salary and how good he is to get position we don’t have or to get a player that fills a need we still, you know, you know, maybe in four years there’s another big hole that’s not shooting that that the Spurs kind of find out they have. And so I think that that’s kind of what the biggest thing is. Like you said, it’s it’s his three-point shot, his ability to be different and not just fill in the same, you know, basic guard position who can’t shoot. You know, we don’t know what’s what’s going to happen with Stfan Castle’s shot. We don’t know if Victor Wmanyama is going to continue to shoot at the rate that he’s shooting from three, right? And so I think there are a lot of factors at play. So at the very root of it, it makes sense. I understand where the scout was coming from. I just don’t think now is the right time to talk about that. I’m not so sure that that’s discourse to be getting into, you know, with five games Fox has played next to Victor, you know. Yeah. And, you know, if you could look in your crystal ball, how do you how would you if if you again, you’re looking at crystal ball here, Matt, how do you think his rookie season will go? I don’t think he’s going to get rookie of the year. Okay. I think Yeah, I can see that. I think maybe about halfway through he starts getting really good rotational minutes and fills a good backup point guard role when dear Fox is off the court. You know, he might be one of the better backup point guards in the league. But, you know, I don’t really see him, you know, like I think one of the biggest things that Castle had to his advantage last season was that half through when Victor and and Fox both went out, he basically had the entire team to himself and that let him get his minutes, get his runs, find him, you know, find his his time to to shine. That’s kind of what earned him that rookie of the year spot. I don’t know if Dylan Harper’s going to have the same kind of runway and that’s okay. They don’t need a third rookie year in a row, but I think that’s kind of how I see it going is he’ll become a very solid rotational player, impact player, maybe about halfway. Yeah. I mean, and then there’s so many other issues even impacting that rookie of the year, you know, because the Spurs make it a three feet. Probably not. But, you know, the Fox is back 100% healthy. More on that in a bit. Uh, you know, so you know what? If he’s just balls out and you’re like, yeah, you you know, minutes are going to have to be given up. Somebody’s gonna have to eat the eat minutes and and lose minutes, I should say. Head to the bench. Uh, you know, the starting unit is at Barnes. Maybe I could see Barnes being the one they kind of limit the minutes. Maybe it’s Facel, maybe it’s Sohan, I don’t know, you know, but if you want to give this kid run, somebody has to lose some minutes in that uh starting unit. So, but that’s already a roadblock right there. Minutes. You know, other players are going to get minutes. your edge combs, your uh your flag, you know, they’re going to get minutes. Bailey is going to get minutes. I mean, seriously, Utah, you know, I’m probably give them all the minutes because they got nothing over there except for him and the marketing. But, so yeah, so then you got the class itself, you know, that’s another roadblock as well. And then of course the Spurs, they’re already trending out of their rebuild. And of course, the three guard lineup right now is a big topic among Spurs fans and how is that going to fit? So, we’ll see. But I don’t think that should impact um his performance. I think he’ll play very well. If I’m looking at my crystal ball, I you know, definitely agree with you. I don’t see rookie of the year in it, but I do see solid 12 to 15 points off that bench. Uh four three three four assist. Uh and you know, I could see something like that. Defensively, I think you’ll that I want to say it’s a work in progress. I feel like it’s just fine-tuning. I think you’ll see that fine-tuning and he’ll be a solid player. But you’re knocking on wood, this doesn’t happen. But I think a situation like what happened with Castle, seeing teammates get injured, take advantage of those minutes and then balling out could work well for Harper. Harper, those are your minutes and away we go. So, but if we’re looking longterm, yeah, I could definitely see Harper making Fox expendable and the timeline as well. As much as it helps right now where that’s not an issue, it helps again as far as it being an issue down the road because who you going to want to pay more money to at that point? Is it an aging point guard Jiren Fox or point guard Harper that’s entering his prime, right? So there’s there’s that to combat too. But yeah, it’s such a great topic though. You know, we definitely want to hear what y’all think. Does Harper make Fox expendable? What do you think? You let Matt know on X and Matt GZMAN. Let me know on X as well. We’re back right here lockown Spurs joined by Matt Guzman. He’s with Spurs on Sports Illustrated. You want to follow my next at Matt GZ man. Let’s catch up on a couple of Spurs news and notes that you may have missed. And the first one you definitely didn’t miss. This past weekend, Spurs fans were in a tizzy. I’m seriously, it was, oh my god, sky is falling. Darren Fox, he canceled his Asian tour with Under Armour. He put out a video apologizing he couldn’t make it. You know that some he didn’t get into why, but he just apolog. That’s a clue. He’s out. You know, oh my god, first can’t have good things. What’s wrong with this team? But yeah, the sky was falling. But luckily, Matt Guzman uh got to the bottom of things and cleared the air. Matt, take it away. What did you learn? And is this a lesson for Spurs fans to like chill the bleed out sometimes? Absolutely, 100%. And I don’t know if you guys can see the bags under my eyes. This is what y’all did to me. But yeah, I mean, it was really pretty simple. Fox was supposed to be on the 2025 Curry Brand World Tour with Steph this week or I guess next month, sorry. Um in Asia, they had several stops along the way. What it was was Curry was going to start in San Francisco, Fox was going to go straight to Asia and they were going to like convene on the last stop of the tour just kind of promoting the new shoes, the brand, whatever it might be. Both are very excited. Fox was incredibly excited to do this. So, I spoke with his tour host, which is the guy that is in charge of kind of facilitating those discussions on the stops, you know, like when he’s sitting on the stage, he’ll ask him questions, help translate, that kind of thing. and he was told by guys within Fox’s camp that you know minor injury issue he just you know would be better to rest to prioritize that not travel and so he had to cancel the tour and that’s that’s all it was so I don’t know where these rumors came from that you know there had been a cease manual injury I don’t what happened whose sources were saying or sauces like you like to say on sauces everybody seems to have these sources and and I don’t think people quite understand that that just doesn’t really happen with Spurs. There just aren’t really sources with the Spurs. That’s not how it goes. Yeah. And some people were like, “Well, why hasn’t the Spurs talked about it or why haven’t come out with Well, why would they? You know, there’s exactly if it’s a minor injury and all it was is a precautionary measure, which is what, you know, I’ve been told, which is what I’ve learned, then there’s no reason to mention it. You know, he’s going to come back, he’s be fine for training camp.” And it was just a little unfortunate circumstance that he had to cancel this, you know, this press tour. But, you know, there is no season ending injury. It’s not believed to be serious. You know, everything is going to be just fine. And so, uh, that’s what I’ve been dealing with the last couple of days. Yeah. Yeah. You know, it ultimately if you watch the video, uh, again, and if Matt didn’t uh do his homework and get to the bottom of things, you could just look from the video itself that he was perfectly fine. It was fine. He wasn’t in the cast. He wasn’t limping. wasn’t grimacing, nothing like that. He was perfectly fine. Uh so yeah, to uh see Spurs fans wig out. I mean, literally, I mean, people were anybody could have put on X, I heard from my sauces, you know, that yeah, it was a hamstring injury and it’s over or it’s a foot injury, it’s over. I mean, Spurs fans would believe it. That’s what bothers me sometimes with first fantasy that you’ll go to pick a ex account, social media account, whatever it is, and they’ll believe it. They’ll believe it like, “Oh my god, that’s it. It’s over. It’s over.” But, uh, good good on you for getting to the bottom of things, too. And, um, I I believe too, uh, Matt, if this was serious, I think the Spurs would have put something out by now, and they normally do when it’s a major injury. Your thought? Absolutely. And it would have been a bombshell. Like, it would have come out of nowhere. like today Darren Fox underwent surgery that’s come out for next year, you know, but yeah, that would have already happened if this was something of that nature and it’s definitely not. Yeah, exactly. So, with that being said, we’re going to move on with that. All right, Fox is fine. Everybody be ready for training camp. All right, in other Spurs news, uh the Spurs 2025 preseason schedule is out. uh Spurs fans uh will get to have at least two no yeah three home games I believe no two home games and um and the rest will be on the road uh they are taking on on the I’m going to say the Chinese team Lions on Monday October 6’ll be at 7 p.m. Central. Then they’ll go to Miami. Okay. And then they’ll have a game there against the Heat, a preseason game on October 8th. Then October 10th, they’re back home taking on the Jazz. And then they have a home and home versus the Pacers in Indiana on October 13th. And then wrap up the preseason slate October 17th against the Pacers at Well, that’s 7 o’clock at the Frost. And Matt, can you and I remember a time, Matt, where these preseason schedules won’t be released till like maybe a month before the season. I I mean, it just felt like it was I was like already already we’re doing this already. Uh but it’ll be a good chance to see uh guys like Carter Bryant, obviously, uh Harper, Jeff Castle, the rest of the crew, and also guys that are probably going to be invited to training camp, David Jones Garcia, who probably get some burn in those preseason games. And Matt, although preseason games are meant just for tuneup and getting ready for the real deal, I I I think, you know, for guys like Carter and Garcia, they really got to utilize the minutes because they’re probably going to see, especially for Garcia, he probably won’t see a lot of minutes. Maybe Carter might see a medium amount, but they got to take advantage of those minutes, something they absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. And that’s a perfect time to do so. Like you mentioned, like the records don’t matter, the scores don’t matter. you know, you’ll even get a chance, you know, I’m sure Carter Bryan will get some run time next to Victor maybe for two minutes, you know, across those five games. Even those guys will play a little bit. Um, and so, yeah, but it’s going to be huge for them to kind of, you know, this will be their first chance to play basketball again since summer league. And so, you now you want to look at what’s happened between July and October and kind of figure out, you know, hey, how have they improved? Are we seeing the same things we saw at summer league? And most importantly, you know, for for those guys like David Jones, Garcia, is he able to score at the same Mhm. same clip, the same consistency, productivity that he was in summer league, you know, against these, you know, we’ve taken a step up to preseason to real NBA defenders. And so, I think it’s going to be huge for them to kind of prove a little bit more, you know, why they earn their contracts, you know, they’re capable of, and then you kind of take that in stride and you kind of get some momentum heading into the regular season. Absolutely. Absolutely. So, it may be a few months away, but at least you have it on your radar, everybody. Spurs preseason basketball will be here in October, so get ready for that. Hey, Matt, before I let you go, what do you think about that whole uh Project Marvel discussion for the last I mean, it’s still going it’s still going strong. Yeah, it’s What do you think? I am the thing I can’t really get past is just trying to visualize or grasp the undertaking that the entire thing would be, you know, with all of the renovations and how long it would take and how much money it’s going to cost. It’s it’s quite the undertaking, but and I think it’s pretty cool that they’re starting those conversations now to figure out what it’s going to look like, if it’s even going to happen. You know, we got a long way to go, but it’s been interesting to watch and follow along. Absolutely. I believe uh the next time we’re going to have a lockdown spur show will probably be Wednesday and I’m sorry, excuse me. On Friday, I’m sorry. Yeah, Friday. We’ll have probably the last one for the week. This would have been the last one for the week. Uh because we’re offseason mode, but because Project Marvel is a big topic right now, we’ll have one on Friday. Um talk about that. But yeah, for those of y’all who are not from San Antonio, basically Project Marvel is just this endeavor for this city to put an entire sports entertainment complex. Not just a Spurs arena, but a new one, I should say, a complex. So, it’s it’s a Spurs arena. Yes. But it’s also shopping center and bars and, you know, a landbridge and uh you know, dining spots and upgrades the the dome. It’s a big endeavor. And um there was a councilman recently um from San Antonio obviously that kind of bashed it and really I what what got me the most Matt is when he pretty much dared the Spurs to relocate. Yeah. I I don’t know if you saw the video. He pretty much said like yeah let them try and see what’s a better deal for them. I was like whoa that’s pretty gutsy for that. But yeah that was crazy. The rationale is if Tony Parker did it, why not Dylan Harper?
Yes, Dylan Harper is starter day 1 and Jordan McGlaughlin is backup. Castle can be emergency Point Guard.
They traded for Fox not knowing that they would get the #2 pick in Dylan Harper. I have heard Guard Derrick White coming back.
Fox got to start 61/73 games for the Kings and if I remember correctly, he was a baaaad boy as a rookie. Dylan Harper is a better prototype. You have to start him and expedite his development, even if that means alongside Fox. You don't draft someone like Harper and put him on the bench. You could have had VJ, Kon, Ace Bailey, or Tre Johnson. Do you realize that Harper as a prospect was consensus #2 over all these guys? Fans need to stop thinking of him as some late first rounder. Maybe if you got someone like Fears (who's very raw) or Walter Clayton Jr, yeah, put them on the bench. You didn't draft "backup" talent in Harper.
Fox is MrClutch DHarp is not. Vic’s the point guard.
YES ROY 3peat!
The more I hear these ideas that Dylan Harper should come off the bench (long term), the more it makes me feel like Dylan's best friend Ace Bailey was right in his approach. Dylan is the type that will say and do the right thing, but you don't think these types of things would be discussed behind the scenes? Do Spurs fans really want to create the next Harden situation? Just do right by him and start him unless he's terrible in training camp (which he won't be). Names of point guards that started as rookies (all or majority of games). Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, John Wall, and even De'Aaron Fox himself (edit: Tony Parker back in the day!). Afraid to let Harper join this list? Do you think people knew these guys would become STARS before they played a single game? Fear of the unknown is not an argument to make for him not starting…
All this speculation is nonsense. Fox is the starting PG. Period
We need Fox for the next two seasons at least and can be contenders or favorites in 26-27 (5-8 in 25-26) with Wemby, Fox, Castle, Harper and great role players.
Fox is the proven commodity, he doesn’t have to prove he’s clutch, doesn’t have to prove he can run a team, doesn’t have to prove anything, DH on the other hand hasn’t done anything outside of TWO summer league games!! College numbers and game play don’t always translate into NBA success, Steph was ROY last year but still played like a rookie against top tier talent having Fox mentor DH will only help in the long run, no need to rush the process we r not competing for a championship next year any ways
Nah rather I'm looking at Castle
Hey guys we are allowed to have more than one good player lol we are even allowed to have more than one good guard lol
