🚨MAJOR Quentin Grimes Update Via The Athletic | 76ers News & Rumors

We have a major Quinton Grimes update to get to here on today’s 76ers. Now, I am Jake Chipper. Thank you so much for tuning in to today’s show. And for Quinton Grimes and his team, they’re probably not going to be big fans of this update from The Athletic. Before we get into the latest news on Grimes and what his market could look like, today, July 30th, is actually my birthday and it’s also my good friend Tyler Smith’s birthday, who runs our Celtics Today channel. So, little bit of a birthday sub battle here as we’re reaching the end of the month of July. Celtics today, which he runs about 35 subscribers ahead of 76ers now and subs picked up in the month of July. Help me out guys on my birthday. I want to take over Tyler Smith and Celtics today. So, hit that sub button. You get Sixers content every single day all year round. So, with that sub button, without further ado, let’s get into today’s show. So, this latest Quinton Grimes update comes in the form of a poll via The Athletic. So, The Athletic ran this poll with 16 NBA front office members. And they did this for each of the four major restricted free agents, of course, Quinton Grimes, but also Cam Thomas, Jonathan Kaminga, and Josh Giddy. They ran this poll where they asked 16 front office members for a fair contract, what they would hand out to each of these restricted free agents. And of course, we’re talking about Grimes here on today’s show. They of course did not talk to anybody for Grimes from the Sixers front office. This is really a great look into what Grimes’s value and what his market is across the NBA because so far, you know, we’ve heard what Grimes wants and what his team’s valuing him at at over $20 million, but the numbers that we’ve heard, you know, we haven’t really heard a concrete number of what Philadelphia wants to offer Grimes, what his market is. I could sit here and tell you guys what I would offer Quinton Grimes, what I think his market should be, but this is really valuable information from NBA front offices to give us a great look into what this Grimes contract could look like. And and I’m telling you right now, it’s lower than what Quinton Grimes would like. So, here is Fred Katz of The Athletic on this poll. Most people pulled for the story considered Grimes within shouting range of the mid-level exception, which is worth 14.1 million in starting salary. 12 of the 16 proposed average annual salaries were between 12 million and $16.7 million. Tell you what, not great news if you’re Quinton Grimes and his camp who they’re looking to get 20 plus million. But you’re telling me of these NBA front office members who again really in with the league are all only offering anywhere from 12 to 16. Shoot, I thought Grimes maybe get $18 million. Maybe that could be fair, but even that seems to be on the high end of his value right now. So the majority of these execs coming in from 12 to 16. I thought the mid-level exception would be a little bit too low for Quinton Grimes, but it looks like that might end up being about the number that he does get. More from Cats here. One front office staffer who is especially high on Quinton Grimes suggested a 4-year $75 million deal, the most total money and the highest average annual value at $18.8 million that anybody in the poll mentioned. So, Freddy Katz saying that this front office staffer especially high on Quinton Grimes. He likes his game. He thinks he deserves to get paid. Still, the highest average annual value any of these NBA front office execs said they would give to Quinton Grimes is under that $20 million mark that Grimes and his camp is looking to get. They weren’t even over $20 million. So, even the people that are high on Grimes and think he does deserve to get paid are not close to the number that Grimes and his camp want. Again, that is not great if you’re Grimes and you’re looking to get that bag. Really does sound like this number is going to be coming in lower than what we had initially anticipated. And we said a lot of them coming in from 12 to 16. There’s execs who weren’t even at the 12 million to$16 million mark. Fred Katz here saying on the other side of the spectrum was an executive who considered Grimes worth just $30 million over three years, a $10 million average annual value, the lowest number in the poll. This executive said he couldn’t properly contextualize Grimes’ scoring outburst at the end of last season when the injured Sixers were losing intentionally in the hopes of keeping their first round pick because he he quote played on a bad team. Excuse me. Look, I understand being skeptical, right, of what Grimes did at the end of the year in those 28 games of Philadelphia because they were losing a bunch and because he was kind of just going out there and putting up a bunch of shots. But that $10 million mark is just way too low. That that is disrespectful. Even of course, you know, from the Sixers perspective, from my perspective, yes, I would like the Sixers to save money and get him as cheap as possible. But if you come to Quinton Grimes with a $10 million offer, there is not a chance he’s accepting that he would just take the qualifying offer of about $8 million and enter free for agency next season. So, I get being lower and I get being skeptical because it is a small sample size and we see players at the end of the season put up big numbers and they don’t always amount to what they were in that time frame. But I think Quinton Grimes is a better player than that and $10 million average annual value. It’s just simply too low. Now, here’s what one NBA executive had to say regarding Quinton Grimes and why he wouldn’t pay Quinton Grimes. The way the cap environment is now, why would you spend $20 million on Quinton Grimes when you can get Bucks guard Gary Trent Jr. for a minimum? We shouldn’t just sign young players because they’re young. You’ve got to believe Grimes is going to develop into your starting back court with Tyrese Maxi. And look, Quinton Grimes situation, it’s it’s complicated, right? When you compare him to some of the other restricted free agents that are currently out there on the market, right? Jonathan the Kaminga has a big sample size. even, you know, his situation is a little bit more complicated because he is so young and I feel like he hasn’t quite shown what he could potentially be, but there’s also a low floor there. So, his situation is a little bit cloudy as well. I feel like Josh Giddy and Cam Thomas, you kind of know what they are at this point. The thing with Grimes is, is what he showed at the end of the season the kind of player he’s going to be? You just really don’t know. You don’t have a big sample size to go off of, right? So, I get not just paying a guy because he’s young and because he theoretically has the upside. You do have to believe if you’re the Sixers that he is that starting two guard of the future and can fit next to Maxi. I think it’s a tremendous fit personally next to Tyrese Maxi because the way he plays defense and how he can play on off ball. So, I think he is worth some money. I’ll have my contract projection coming up in just a little bit. That’s not that high. But I think, you know, his situation again is just a little bit confusing and this is why it’s taking so long for Grimes to get a deal. However, some NBA executives were higher on what Quinton Grimes can do and what he does bring to the table as a player. There are not many Swiss Army knife wings out there that score as efficiently, defend, pass, or rebound like he does. He might not be elite at any one thing, but he’s very good at a lot of them, said another NBA exec. And look, this has been my take on this really the entire off season. I think Grimes is a legit player. Now, do I think he’s going to be the same 20 plus point per game guy that he was at the end of the year moving forward in his career for Philadelphia? No, I don’t think he’s truly a 20 point per game guy on a team that has this much talent. But what I want people to understand with Grimes here and and the difference between somebody like Grimes and other players who at the end of the season playing for tanking teams put up a bunch of shots and score a bunch of points, but they’re not always efficient in doing so. Grimes had again a 28game sample size, which yes, it’s not a full season, but it’s not like it’s a 10ame stretch to end the year. This is a 28game stretch, his time with the Sixers in which yes, he upped his scoring average, but five rebounds, four and a half assists. He was doing way more than we have ever seen him do with the ball in his hands. And not only was he doing it all, he was doing it all while maintaining pretty elite efficiency. 47% from the field, 37 from three. A lot of times you see guys at the end of the season up their scoring averages, but the shooting percentages don’t look all that good or they drop a little bit. Grimes percentages did not drop. In fact, they’re up there with some of the best efficiency of his career. That’s why I feel so confident saying that he is a legit player. And yeah, he might not be the 20 point per game guy, but I think Grimes could be, you know, on this team with how many guys that you have that can score the ball, you know, a 15, 16, 17 point per game guy that if he’s shooting close to 40% from three. The way he can, I think, seamlessly fit into your offense playing on ball, playing off ball, can do some things, making some plays for others as he did show at the end of the season. I think that is a legit part of his game. And we know he’s a great defender as well. So, you’re not just paying him because of the scoring outburst. You’re paying him because of everything he could do as a player. Now, is that worth $20 million a season? No, I do not think so. Another NBA exec here on Quinton Grimes. And this is where I think Grimes and his team really kind of need to get it together. You say to Grimes, if you’re the Sixers, do you want money or do you want the longevity on your deal? And if he says both, you say, sorry, we just cannot offer both. Again, this is where I think Grimes and his team need to get real here, right? The way the market is in the NBA now with the current CBA and just with how late we are in the offseason at this point and with what the Sixers cab situation is, they really cannot commit another 20 plus million dollar contract to a player like Grimes for four plus seasons. They just cannot do it without being 100% sure that Grimes can be that starting two guard of the future, especially after he just drafted BJ Edgecom. So look, I understand Grimes, he wants his money, he wants his security after he just had that good end to last season. But you got to be realistic with the situation in Grimes and his camp. They got to look at this and be like, “You know what? We have a chance to either cash in for a couple years, take a larger contract, maybe a two-year deal, and then try to get another long-term contract in a couple years, or let’s get the security at a number that, sure, maybe we didn’t really want in the first place, but it’s still a good number. I can still get paid and be somewhere where I know I’m going to be because he’s kind of been all over the place in his short NBA career thus far. They got to get real with themselves. Got to get real with what the market is.” And I think that’s picking between either a larger salary or a longerterm contract. Now, these executives, they were not only pled on how much money they would give Grimes, they were also pulled on how long of a deal they would give Grimes. So, one person in the poll suggested a two-year deal. 11 of the 16 proposed three-year deals come between 30, 36, 39, 40, 42, 45, and $47 million. All those numbers right there, 45.7 and below, either at the mid-level exception or below the mid-level exception mark of $14.1 million. We also had someone offer a three-year deal for 48 million. Two of those, actually. Then someone offered a three-year deal for 50 million. Interestingly enough, four of the 16 did mention a 4-year contract. One for 60 million, one for 64, one for 72, and one for 75. But even those deals don’t quite reach well none of them reach 20 million per year. A lot of them again still in that same range. Just a little bit of a longer term commitment. So look, knowing the market, knowing what these NBA execs and front office members are hearing around the league and what they would be giving Grimes, I think we have a great idea now of what the Sixers are probably looking to offer Grimes as well. I think that’s a deal somewhere from 2 to 3 years in that 12 to $16 million range. Now, for me, I’m going to come in on the higher end of that range. I think anything below $14 million just isn’t fair to honestly, in my opinion, looking at it from both sides. I think he’s played well enough to earn at least the mid-level exception. So, I’d be offering Quinton Grimes a three-year $45 million deal. You get a three-year deal, which I believe Grimes is 25. like you can still get another contract when you’re about 28 29 still be in your prime and still get another long-term deal maybe even at a higher price and you still get $15 million average annual value. Is it the $20 million you wanted at one point? No, it’s not. And it’s unfortunate that it’s just the way that restricted free agency has worked out. But it’s the reality of the situation. I think you get the best of both worlds if you’re grimes even if it’s not up to the number that you want. And it’s a fair deal to determine over the next three years, you know, is he someone we want to keep long term. Maybe you throw in a player option on that third year if Grimes would like that. So, it’s going to be more of a two-year deal. He can get out of it if he wants. I think that’s what works best. And I think this would be a fair offer from Philadelphia for Quinton Grimes. But now, knowing what you know now, knowing what the market seems to be for Grimes from these NBA front office members, what would your final offer to Quinton Grimes be? him and his agents, they come up to you and they say, “We want your final deal for us right now.” What would that be? 2. Man the Sixers need to offer him a 2 year deal for 35-40mil. Thats 15mil-20mil a year. I wouldn’t mind that, we actually need a player like him. Paul George is not a guarantee with his injuries and Embiid probably won’t even play. You add Quentin Grimes with Maxey to the starting line up you have defense, scoring, passing, and shot creation. With Kelly starting at the 3 with Watson and Bona/Drummond. Then the bench would be McCain, VJ, Edwards, Broome and Drummond/Bona. That’s a solid line up. Having Pg available would just make it a plus

  3. Happy Birthday Jake 🎉🎉🎉🎉 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻 My Final Offer to Grimes is 45mil for 3yrs its because weve find out how much the average cost for him

  4. 4/$65M with the 4th a Team Option with a $5M buyout type thing which kinda makes it a 3/$54M ish deal. There can NOT be a "no-trade clause" so that the 76ers can possibly trade Grimes either this year or in the off season in order to balance out yhe roster better. We still do NOT have a real PF and our back-up Center position stinks and we still do NOT have a teal PG…..a lot of wholes still.
