The Washington Wizards rebuild is GAINING STEAM!!!!
The Washington Wizards have fully embraced the tank. After years of being mediocre in the playin, just out of the playin, the Wizards have embraced the idea that they are going for the superstar. And ever since that moment, this rebuild has been one of the more interesting rebuilds to watch in the entirety of the NBA. With Alex R. are Bub Carrington acquiring Cam Whitmore here in the offseason, getting Trey Johnson. This team is starting to really put together something that could be really good for years to come. So, today we’re back with another episode of the Rebuild Report. And today we look at the Washington Wizards and how their decision to finally embrace the tank may have saved the franchise. And I think you have to start talking about this Wizards rebuild with no one other than Alex Sar, who they got second overall just two years ago now. And Sar had a very interesting rookie year to say the least. I think while Sar had his moments where the upside was finally starting to show itself, there were also moments where I do think that this Wizards development staff got into a little bit of a sticky situation. So, first of all, defensively, Alex Sar, I think, is definitely definitely as good as advertised, if not just a little bit better. I mean, the dude’s giving you two uh two blocks a game basically with a steel. So, he’s giving you about three stocks a game as a rookie. That’s very very good. Uh especially for, you know, a sevenfooter who you’re trying to build a grounder with. I also think offensively we have a bit of a problem. Now, obviously it’d be easy to sell out and just be like, “Oh, well, you know, he’s not very good.” No, I think the bigger problem is the three-point volume should not be what it is. So, for reference, when you look at Alexar’s total stats and like his total field goals attempted, he took a total of 828 shots, 341 of them are three-pointers, 41% of his shot this year were threes. And for the reference, he shot 31% from three. That is unacceptable. And I get it, some of it is rookie growing pains. I’m not denying that whatsoever. I think if this rebuild wants to truly start taking off and not just be at the phase where they have a lot of really cool young names, I think we need to really start knowing where these players are at their best, which I think for Sar is very simple. He’s at his best when he can get to the basket and he can kind of fight. I also do think however when you look at cleaning the glass his corner three ball it’s actually not horrendous which I think is obviously very important to remember because again if you know what you’re good at as a player then you can really start to take things somewhere but I think again Sar is showing to be a good player. I’m just a little concerned about the overall ability offensively and again he doesn’t really want to be a fiveman. He wants to play the four, which I get, but I think quite frankly, unless they’re able to luck into another center, you kind of have to tell him like, dude, like, and again, I think Alexar is a perfect encompassing of this rebuild. There’s a lot of promise here and things are actually looking way better than we thought so at base value. We just have to hope the development goes the right way and we can get this thing going in a very good direction. And I think another key player that I think we all need to watch this year as the NBA community, you know, if we’re really into hoops, Bub Carrington. Bub Carrington, I think, was one of the more interesting rookies from last season. When you look at Bub, who by the way, played all 82 games. So that’s already, I think, a huge huge huge for the Wizards is you have a very healthy player. And when you look at his stats, they’re not necessarily jumping off the page. And I also think something that’s very important, Bub, you know, passer and playmaker, I think now that you got a Trey Johnson is going to look even better because I think Bub Carrington is actually a pretty good passer and facilitator, but I think he’ll look even better as a secondary passer, ball handler, playmaker cuz he could be that combo guard. You don’t necessarily have to stick him at the one and he’s stuck there. I think this guy can do something really, really special for this team. I when you watch him play, there are moments, right, where you’re like, wow, this guy, he has a long way to go. But I would also say there are a lot of moments where you’re like, “This kid is really talented.” And I think again, the Wizards have done a very good job to me of drafting over these last few seasons. They’ve done a really good job at not trying to overstock at one position, but also doing a really good job at making sure like, hey, we don’t know if this guy’s going to work out, so we have a little backup option. And I think with Bub specifically, now that you have Trey Johnson, you could have your guard duo of the future because you can have Trey sort of be that primary scorer/f facilitator and you can have Bub be that next guy. And I think at that point, Bub can be something really deadly for this team. And again, I think if you’re Washington, you continue to embrace a tank, but you have to embrace it in a way of you’re making sure though you’re developing your guys. So, for example, I think if I’m the Wizards, I want to see Bub get up to, I would say, like 13 to 14 points a game. He’ll probably stick around five assists, maybe six rebounds. He’ll stay at like four. I need to see 43 44% from the field. I want to see at 36, 37% from three. At that point, you’re showing me we have already made a tremendous leap in terms of what we’re trying to get from you. And then you know I think this team can be something really special. But I think there’s one last player that I think is very key and interesting for this rebuild and that is Balal Kulabali who I believe in some ways the Wizards once they moved off of Denny thought that he could be something close to that. Bal Koulabali is a player who I’ve been kind of interested in on and off over these past two seasons. And Bal I think is a good basketball player. I think though his offensive game is in need of a legitimate point guard, which I think now again you got Trey Johnson because when you look at his uh overall accuracies, right, his mid-range is actually like took a significant leap. Um the rim percentage even took a significant leap. But when you look at the three ball, I feel like the corner three should be his primary weapon. Even last year, he was really good at it. It’s just that everything else that isn’t that kind of three, he’s just not very good. But I think once Bob Bub or once Trey Johnson gets there and they can get downhill and drive and kick, that’s where I think you could see Bal improve that efficiency offensively and then let him try and get downhill himself. Let him get to the mid-range. I think if you could develop his game inside the arc and then you make it so that he could be a good catch and shoot spot up shooter, that’s where I think you can make his game deadly. But defensively, guys, I mean, Bal has always been pretty damn good defensively. And I mean, the dude averaged two stocks this year. Defensively, he’s legit. I really do believe that like he’s a very very good defender. Now, is he like a man or a Sar Thompson? No. Like he’s not like that crazy of a Wayne Young defender. He’s no slouch. Like you’re definitely not going out of your way in the game plan going into a Washington game going let’s tag ball all. And I think that’s a big thing is that him and Sar defensively and that’s the other thing I like about this team. The offensive identity isn’t all the way there yet. They’ve got a shadow of an outline, but defensively they’ve got a pretty solid identity, which is we’ve got a really good like, you know, center for whatever you want to call it. Like we have a good rim deter in Alexar and then we’ve got a really good perimeter guy in Bal Kulabali special. But I think Bal again once you kind of are able to take the ball out of his hands a little bit more or when the ball is in his hands he can kind of work on getting inside you know the three-point line and from there he can operate I think at a much better level and again I think you’d probably see a jump in his efficiencies and again focus on that three ball in the corner. That’s how I think you if you’re Washington, you can take this team from like you’re a cool rebuild and I think you’re actually a really interesting rebuild to this is one of the best rebuilds going on in the NBA and this team is on watch for next season. They can start really making a push towards becoming legit. And then finally, we get to their rebuild report grade. All around I would give this rebuild a B, maybe a B+. I am genuinely genuinely liking what this rebuild is. Um, I’m a little concerned again with what they’re trying to do there with SAR at the four slash5. Like where are they going with that? I’m hoping again that this development staff can show that they have caught on now to tendencies from their players and you try and alter some of that. Of course, barring the players went insane in the summer and now they’re back and Bal could just shoot from anywhere like he’s KD in which case forget everything I just said. I love the idea of Bub and Trey Johnson together. Again, I love that draft for them. And I think an underrated move from them is getting Cam Whitmore, getting a a a scoring punch either off your bench or he can even fight his way to get into that starting lineup. I really like that idea. I think Washington is embracing the youth culture and they still have vets like Chris Middleton. And again, I think that’s important. Houston, I think, showed that importance. Having vets in the locker room to bring in a legitimate culture to build around and to better yourself and to better your teammates and to better, you know, the reputation of your team. I think that will do a lot. So, again, I’m probably going to end up at a B+ here, but I am really, really liking the direction of this Washington rebuild. What do you guys think of this rebuild? Do you guys agree with me? Do you think this is one of the better rebuilds going out that a lot of people aren’t talking about?
