I hope you set aside the next 5 hours 32 minutes and 16 seconds for a breakdown of the Heats rotation particularly who could get the 10th spot if it comes down. No, I’m not allowing that to happen. Uh we are 2 minutes and 30 seconds into this. We are ending at 25. Just letting you guys know that. So let’s get started part two situation. I mean that’s what we should do like okay who is number one in the heat rotation? Let’s just start with that. We’ll get through August. Who’s number two? Who’s number three? Eternal is going to say that Tyler’s number 15. Uh, we’ll just I’ll just bring in different people to discuss this. Um, no, we’re at the end of July. These are officially the dog days. We apologize. I know that there is heat news and it’s crazy because I knew something was coming. I’ll just say this, but I thought, remember, remember I reached out to you guys in Las Vegas and I said, I hear there’s something going on behind the scenes and I thought it was KL Wear related because it was the day that the Kell Wear thing happened. I think it was actually this that just broke about all the memorabilia that got stolen. Uh so that’s a big big story. I don’t really know how to attack that story. So we’ll give it a couple of days and let it play out. But a lot of the stuff from the big three era I guess I should have kept more of it. Uh has been and hoisted basically. Um so we’ll we’ll get into that in some of it’s one of the biggest memorabilia hoist of all time. We’ll get into that in another episode as I get more uh details here. But let’s get into the rotation. Seriously, we’re going to try to cover this now. I just wasted a minute, so now you guys are down to 22. Uh let let’s get into this. Do we have a set seven? Do we have a set seven for the rotation? Alex, give me yours and then Brady will give his. All right. So, um that’s kind of where I was at leading into this show is thinking about the rotation going into next season. Like there’s a lot of guys, you know, they have a lot of guys who I think are candidates and then even if you you start to narrow down a couple of them, it’s still kind of a, you know, let me just say here early on, tough question, right? Like um I I think that the seven is kind of where I’m confident, right? It’s like that’s where I’m kind of okay. The easy answer, you’ve got Norm, you’ve got Hero, you’ve got Wiggins, you’ve got Bam, you’ve got where maybe that’s a starting lineup, maybe it isn’t, but those five are, you know, are locks after that. Dave and and Nico to me. Um, even with like the up and downness of Nico’s career, I I do lean more towards Eternal side as far as like, you know, listening to that conversation you guys had a week or two ago. Um, that I think he was kind of figuring something out there before he got hurt. I think Spo was was starting to be more comfortable with him coming off the bench and I think there was a little bit of of a sweet spot there. right now. I’m not as as far with Eternal as far as the, you know, a little bit of MVP potential that he quote unquote thinks uh Nico has, but I do clip that, by the way. I I I haven’t clipped that yet. We need to get that clip out there, right? Like that was that was one of those stunners. Sometimes people say things on here and then I’m like, “Well, wait a second.” But then I realized who said it. And uh he’s got to be true to character here. So that’s that’s it. Uh okay. So saying that on the podcast was was brave. I I had to give Eternal some. Oh, when it happens, he’ll literally be the only person alive who ever said it. Like, if you’re ever going to be right about something, be right about something big, right? Be right about something big. Anyway, so that’s it. I mean, it’s not like simple as saying, “Oh, Kevin Durant’s going to score 25 points in a game this season.” I mean, it’s more significant to say like Terry Rosier is going to go 12 of 12, right? Like, that’s a that’s a big claim. Okay. So, so those are your seven basically pretty much. Now, I think Haywood is one that I’m like, “Okay, he could be a lock.” But they played with his role so much last season where like I I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a lock from day one, but it’s one of those where it’s like, “Okay, there’s other guys in that same wing rotation that could maybe outplay him in training camp, but I I I wouldn’t be like mad at all if you called Haywood a lock.” What do you think? Well, he’s the locksmith, so we got to do that. Brady, what do you got? Yeah, to that point, I was going to say I to me, I don’t have a strong seven. I have a strong eight. Like I I think it is. I’ll say this. When I first when we first first heard the Powell thing, I was kind of thinking that DaVon was kind of in the starting lineup and they were gonna kind of fix things around and figure things out. The more I kind of go into this offseason, I just don’t see a way you can bring Powell off the bench. Like I just think he’s he’s going to be he’s just too important to this team with the way the direction of this season and trying to figure everything out. Uh I just think that makes everything harder in the long term. like they’re just I think what Al said I think it is going to be Tyler Powell Wiggins bandwear and they’ll figure out the rest to that point. I think it’s Mitchell Yoic but I think Haywood is there. I think it’s a strong eight. I think they’re going to lock in DaVon and Haywood together as much as possible. So that’s why I kind of have Haywood in the tier of DaVon just because I think their minutes are going to be attached like I just we’ve saw what did last year together. I think they have kind of a core there with Yoic and then you can stagger Bam and Wear who’s going to be playing with one of those lineups. and then you’re going to add in one of your scores. I mean, it’s going to be Bamer Kell and then either or and then Tyler Powell and then you kind of work your rotation from there. So, that’s why I know we’re going to get into the 10-man rotation thing, which makes it a little bit more interesting. I think still early in the season, they’re going to lean nineman rotation. That’s just the way these things work out every single season. Uh, but I do think that the we’re building this rotation, but in reality, this episode is who’s the ninth man and who would be the 10th man because that that that’s kind why I wanted to bump this from seven to eight because I don’t see Haywood as a fringe guy anymore. I think they need the defensive stuff. When I look at the starting lineup especially, it’s like they’re throwing all their scores out there at once and they’re going to stagger from there. You need when you’re building the lineup around those other guys, you need Haywood in there. You need him for the defensive purposes and the shot has really come along. So, uh, I’d say it’s an eightman, strong eightman that everybody can kind of pretty much agree on. Well, our exposure talks about layers, right? So, it isn’t just about the starting lineup or the finishing lineup, although the finishing lineup is more important than the starting lineup. And Gio and I just did an episode about that. But then it’s also the layers in between and and how he gets to those layers. And that’s why he’s had placeholder starters over the years because it allows him to put somebody else in. It’s also why when somebody has been hurt in the starting lineup, a lot of times he’ll pull the guy from like the 11 through 15 category instead of from one of the regular subs to the starting lineup. And he used to do that with James Jones and and many others over the years. Um I I don’t actually think the ninth man is that hard to figure out. I don’t I think it’s Larson. I I I think it’s Larson. I just think if you look at the trajectory of players and when they’ve given guys bigger roles in summer league and then you look at the way he plays, the style of play that he has, the need of this team, I think for a little bit more overall grit, um his ability to play with different lineups, I feel like he’s a rotation player and then it’s like, okay, maybe there’s a 10th. Uh, I I I don’t I don’t really think I don’t really think it’s as big a question as others are thinking as I’m looking at the rotation. If you’re going to make Haywood the eighth, I I think Larson is the ninth. I just think they they they’ll use him at times with Hero, protect Tyler defensively a little bit. I think they can try him with Powell some if they want to get Powell off the ball a little bit because Larson did some of that on the ball work, particularly if you’re playing Yoic out there with him. So, I I I just think I don’t know. I I I just think that there’s I I think there’s consensus from those that I spoke to out there was that they were prepping Larson for a rotation role. And when Spo talked about it, not just to us, but also on NBA TV in that one appearance he made, he kind of indicated that he’s like, you know, he’s ready for something bigger now. And I I don’t see I see here’s the thing about him. Okay, we when we look at rotation players, we always look at, okay, what is the guy going to do to get out of Spolster sight, right? like what is he going to do to make Eric feel he can’t play him? I just don’t know what it’s going to be with Larson unless he literally missed 30 three-point shots in a row. And even then, I feel like he would be telling him to keep shooting and he’d be saying that he’s doing things that don’t show up in the box score. I am I am I crazy on this? Because I I know we can talk about other guys. I think there are other guys, but I think right now this is that’s the ninth guy. Who are you asking here? Brady, are you guys trying to draw out the episode now? I wasn’t sure. No. Yeah, we are. I wasn’t sure who you were going to there. So, I just wanted to defer, but I I’m with you. I I I came into this like doing the exercise in my head and thinking if I had to bet Haywood and Larson would be eight and nine. That’s kind of where I’m at. But, it’s just one of those things where like you mentioned, there’s so many guys that are kind of in the running and that doesn’t include um like Terry or anything like that. Like somebody that’s like, you know, just completely unexpected, right? um even without him, there’s still a lot of guys who could technically be in the running. Like there’s even though guys might be at different positions, you know, there’s only so many spots in the rotations like you guys are talking about like um like Brady said, like Spo typically um for as much as I personally love a good 10-man rotation when you have a deep team. Spo typically leans towards nine and then you know some games maybe he’ll play 10, whatever, but it’s typically nine and maybe the 10th guy can get like a few minutes here and there, but it’s not much, right? And so that ninth man is so like that spot in the rotation is so precious for Spo. And so I’m with you that I think Haywood and Larson are eighth and ninth, but it’s like maybe he thinks one night that the the shooting is more necessary, right? And he goes to a right like he he you saw he was more than fine going to Burks last year who was a sniper for them. If Fontekio has a good shooting season, I, you know, with the 68 size, the way that he kind of in general like seems like he he’s really trying when he’s out there. Um, I could see him being a spo guy if they’re having a, you know, they need an extra shooter off their bench. Um, I I think Larson deserves it. I I love the way he plays. Um, and I’m 100% with you that it’s like they gave him the role of somebody that they’re going to play, right, the way that they were, you know, kind of featuring him at summer league. And I I would not be surprised at all if he was in the rotation on night one. I think at this point it’s kind of his spot to lose. I think Hakez will have a you know a chance to compete for it. But his like it’s looking tough for him since they didn’t make any you know wing trades up to this point as far as like Wiggins Haywood other guys that are in that spot um in front of him. Like Pella is looking like he’s kind of taken haime spot on the rotation. Feekio brings the specific need that they have. Hakas is just kind of in this weird purgatory right now where like he has to beat out all these guys and they’ve got this interesting rookie who none of us are really expecting them to play but it’s like man he he’s got his work cut out for him. No, I’m with you. I mean do you think you think Hakez is on the outside looking in if it’s a nine rotation Brady? I do, but I think Spo is really hoping that’s not the case. And I I I mean that’s like an obvious thing to say, but I just think they’re I think Spo is a little bit higher on the Hawkey situation than maybe we are and the fans are like that. That’s why I’m like a little curious to see how it’s going to play out just because I think he wants to play him in the rotation, but when I look at the rotation, the fit the fit isn’t there for me. Like when I look at like where can kind of slide in. Like I just think as Alex was saying, I think a lot of these lineups off the bench, it’s going to be more lean into shooting and it’s just going to be tough to like play the Hawkins thing and him sit in the corner and do that whole thing. But maybe he does have, you know, a redeemed season and can come back a little bit stronger and they can put him in different lineups. But I think right now Larson has earned it up to this point. But the the guy that you mentioned, and this is what I was gonna kind of say before, my hot take of the season is like because I we didn’t I haven’t really talked like a lot about this guy, but I think Fonteo I think my hot take is he is a rotation player. Like I I just think Spo when it comes down to it and he looks at the kind of the the rotation as a whole and like what they’re missing in a lot of these lineups and what it’s going to come down to. I know there’s like not a lot of defense at the point of attack unless they’re running the Haywood Davon lineup, but I think they’re going to lean into into Fonteio. I think they’re going to lean to the shooting. I think that Burk’s example is a good example. I mean, he just leaned into him immediately. I know he was a veteran that he trusted. Uh, but they’ve liked Fonteio. I mean, he was somebody, it’s not somebody that was like, okay, just somebody they traded for Duncan. He’s just on the roster. I think they actually might lean into him a little bit and he has size. He has the ability to shoot over guys. Uh, so I’m just interested in the way he’s kind of because we didn’t talk a lot about this, but I I do think he’s kind of one of the interesting players heading into camp, like the kind of training camp that he has, like how he performs, how the shot looks, how he’s kind of competing at that level. Like if he does, I do think he could break into the rotation. Um, but I I said this before as well, like I kind of with the direction of this team and where they are right now, I kind of hope that he’s not ahead of Larson. Like I in my head it’s like you are leaning into that thing that you mentioned where it’s like you go to the slight 10 where it’s like you throw a tenth guy in there for a five minute spurt in each half just to see what he can give you. And that to me is Fonteo like he’s the tenth guy you could throw in there see if there’s something to spark and be in the rotation there. But I want Larson to play like I I even think about the lineup that they could run if they’re staggering where it’s we’re saying DaVon Haywood and Yovic are a lock for that lineup. You’re staggering Bam and Kell. Let’s say it’s Bam and that lineup specifically with the bench unit. And then I would say you’re probably putting Powell at the two because I think they’re probably going to link up Hero and Wear and Bam and Powell. I mean, that’s a fine lineup to me. I mean, if you’re running DaVon Powell, Larson, Yoic, and Bam. Um, that seems like a pretty workable lineup that you could do some different things with. And then when you kind of sub some defense out, you could bring in Fontekio for spurts. So, uh, as now I just named 10 guys and like you just the question that you asked me to start this was is Haimey on the outside looking in. Yeah, I mean right now it does seem like he is he seems like he’s the 11th guy looking in. Unless he comes back and it’s like he looks like a completely different player than he did for most of last season where he just looks the shot looks different, the defense he looks quicker, like all that stuff together. U, that’s the only way I think it really changes. I think he has to force his way into Spolster’s thinking. I I really think that’s where we’re at right now. I just I don’t think it’s guaranteed in any way. just like I don’t think that the wear starting spot is guaranteed, but I think it it feels somewhat inevitable because it would be viewed as a step back if he’s not. I I think that’s part of this like and you’re also managing his ego and I think as long as he shows up and gives them enough of what we saw in the last two summer league games, then Nico is not going to have an issue coming off the bench. Nico wants to close. Okay, we talked about the closing lineups. That’s really what he wants to do. And if he puts himself in a position where, you know, as as he looks in in Eurob and all the rest, if he looks uh like he’s really coming on, then Spolster gives him that prominent role off the bench, he’ll just stay in games at the end of games. Uh even if we most of us think he’s probably going to lean on DaVon as that fifth closer in a lot of those situations. All right, on the other side of this, I got a different question for you guys without us pushing it too far. I’m just going to ask this. Is this rotation better than the one they took in the last season? And let’s assume that they had Jimmy Butler who wasn’t hiding in the corner. Okay, before we do that, want to mention a great sponsor of the Five Reason Sports Network. That’s Prize Pick. Use the code five fi. Put down your five bucks. You get $50 to play right away. It’s prizepix.com. Okay. Um, what was the rotation coming into last season? I I’m going to I’m going to try to remember it. It was Rosir, Hero, Butler, Yovic, Bam. The bench was Hakez. Uh, Love, I guess we assumed at the very beginning of the year, Thomas Bryant got some of those minutes. It wasn’t where. So, Love or Bryant, Hakez, it wasn’t Larson yet. Duncan, Duncan, and Highmith, right? So, Duncan, Highmith, were we missing a point guard? They didn’t really have one, right? Drew Smith kind of emerged in that role, but it was it was it was Highmith. And so, so Love or Bryant, Hakez, Highmith, Duncan with a little Drew mixed in as they went forward. Isn’t this rotation better this year? Are you guys just going to put so much weight on the Jimmy that you were getting, right? Like, is that is that determine everything? Well, my question would be, are we are we calling this like how it how we know it played out or is this like prior to training camp what we thought it was going to be? Well, none of us liked the Rose Hero pairing though. Like that one we that one we all hit. We were like that I don’t know if that’s going to work. We didn’t love the pairing, but I think there was an expectation that Terry would be productive. I mean, there was there was still an expectation where was pushing that it was going to work and we thought he was going to be a productive starting point guard for this team. There was the fact coming in that we thought Jimmy contract year Jimmy was going to come to play like it was going to be an all-star type season coming in. He was going to prove himself and that whole thing that didn’t play out. So, I think if Yeah, we were. It was just a different time. But if it was like projection-wise, like if it was like prior to the rosters without knowing it was going to happen, to be honest, I would probably still say last year. I mean, you didn’t mention Kell, but Kell was still in the mix at that point. I mean, and we didn’t obviously didn’t expect what it was going to become, but he was in the mix. Um, but with knowing how it all played out, I mean, yeah, I’m going to take this roster right now. I think there’s more. I mean, the young players are better. Tyler’s better than he was last year. coming just a extra year of Tyler Herro’s improvements. Uh, and I just do think I mean not I keep like some not comparing it but I like somewhat compare the Powell situation to Terry and not in the exact way but I just think it’s more of a clear fit where there’s not like the expectation that Terry like have the inconsistencies have the the you know tough shotmaking nights the way that it didn’t played out for Terry. I just don’t see that happening for Pal just because of the way he plays the offball stuff, the way he can still impact the game with the with the gravity stuff. Like, uh, there’s not as many question marks that I have with the Terry Tyler thing that I do with the Powell Tyler thing as we talked about on previous podcast. So, yeah, I’d have two different answers compared to like when we’re viewing the roster because obviously it was an absolute mess the way it played out. Alice, just let’s look at fit, right? Obviously, Jimmy’s a better player than even a half engaged. Jimmy is a better player than a lot of the players we’re talking about here. But just in terms of fit, we were talking about some of the issues, right? Like that Jimmy and Tyler still were kind of working out chemistry. We didn’t really know how it would work with Rosier and and Jimmy. Um you know, Hake, right? Yoic, the starting lineup. Hakez, like how much would he play with Jimmy as opposed to just replacing Jimmy? Even if we expected Hakez to be better, excuse me, than he was. Um, I I don’t know. It just It feels like if we’re going to say last year’s rotation was better, it’s simply because of Jimmy. I I just I don’t I think on paper this team is is deeper. Um, a little more well-rounded, a little more overall scoring punch. Again, barring injury and barring major regression. Uh, which again, we got major regression from a couple guys last year, so it’s definitely possible. But honestly, this year you’re not counting on Rosier or Hakez, two guys who were supposed to be your we said fourth and fifth best players potentially last year. Like that’s really what we were looking at. And now like we’re saying Hakez is barely a 10 and Rosir we’re not even discussing, right? So, I I just think on paper, this one of the reasons I was interested in doing this is I do think this team is is a little smoothed over, a little better. Pieces are not quite as jagged. They just don’t have a guy who they were counting on to be a one, but Norm Powell may produce better than Jimmy ended up producing simply because Jimmy was not really wanting to be here anymore, right? Norm Powell wants to be here. That’s half the battle. So, I I don’t know. I I I’m not trying to hope traffic this people. I know I said the highest win total here for this team is 47. I still believe that, but I I think we probably overestimated last year’s roster coming into camp and I I feel like we may be underestimating this one a little bit. That’s that’s sort of where I’ve come down on it. I’m I think I’m with you. I although like I feel like most of us um and not just including us three, but like most fans it feels like in general we’re not in on that starting lineup idea. And look, that may just be like, you know, the people that I’m seeing. So maybe I I shouldn’t try to represent a majority there. But just in general, like that starting lineup, I I wasn’t a fan of it. And then on just the way it played out, it didn’t work, right? Um like what Brady said earlier, I just think you were expect you were expecting a good Terry Rosier, right? Um, even if the fit wasn’t great with a certain lineup, even if you put him to the bench and he could still be an offensive spark plug for you, even if the defensive stuff wasn’t working with Tyler, I thought he would be a productive NBA player for them who was playing 25, maybe 30 minutes a night, you know, maybe not like a star, but a good player, a solid, decent player. He was terrible, terrible that like like you mentioned, he’s not even in the the conversation right now, right? He he’s behind a guy who hasn’t played NBA minutes and who none of us won’t expect in Casper, right? Um you know uh I just think like it it’s so like we can’t underestimate how like those major drop offs that they had last year with Terry and secondarily with Haime. Like is that just going to keep happening? Right? Cuz if not I I’m with you. I’m with you. I do think the rotation is is better. Like knowing what we know now, this rotation is better than the one they started last season with. Even if I would say like maybe if you put that all together a little bit better and play better units and Jimmy, you know, you you had the Jimmy thing resolved and that Dark Cloud wasn’t over you, maybe that’s a better team overall, you know, like you have a decent Terry, you have a decent high me like what we thought we were getting, right? Like that world might be a better team. But that world ended up not being re reality, right? Like I that that podcast you you you referenced Ethan with where you referenced Terry and Haimey as two of their top five players. I vividly remember that podcast and I vividly remember calling No, we’ve erased that podcast. That podcast no longer exists. You can’t find that Spotify, YouTube. I I vividly remember being like like a guy like, “Hey, Haimey is going to be a sneaky six-man candidate.” Like I was so wrong. I was I was I was so wrong. So look, like that that world that I thought we were heading into was a better one, but it was not reality. So look, this one this this rotation Maybe it happens this year. Maybe it happens this year. The Terry comes out gang busters and campus is lighting everybody up. What’s the phrase since both you and I are so good with with commonly held phrases like be better than the sum of their parts or whatever? Like I think they have a better Yeah. Well, well, no, it’s correlation is not causation, right? Like isn’t that the one? By the way, before we close this episode, I’ll let Brady close it. We’re going to keep this under 30. Uh we have to come up with um our most commonly used phrases. We’re going to do a poll on off the floor. So obviously uh Alex is on, you know, at the end of the day, which he doesn’t use anymore. Uh or that’s a tough question, which he does. Brady’s is I’m interested to see. I’m interested to see. That’s one. I wrote down another one the other day. If you have others that you go, uh I say a lot of things that annoy you people apparently. I used to say here’s the thing all the time. We turned that into a regular segment on uh 790 back when there was actual, you know, the sports two sports radio stations in town. Uh so any other thing when you say correlation isn’t causation, some people have noted that right after that you always say or is it the other way around? I I always say it. It’s part of it. It’s Wait, Greg has a thing too. Good. I it’s basically agreeing with me like Greg’s saying but I forgot exactly how he does it but he if you go to Greg it’s you know I see your point. No it’s not that I wrote it down the other day. I got to go anyway right now on our Discord. No there were a lot of them. I forgot I forgot that. Anyway, so there we go. Um all right Brady you can you can close this. Uh I’m interested to see what you say. At the end at the end of the day it’s a tough question. Yeah, I’m just interested in uh I’m interested in seeing the rotation. Uh no. Um no, I just You’re gonna do it without You’re not even trying to do it. Don’t you don’t have to force it. You’re right. You’re right. Uh Brady a grenade like end of the shot clock. Like what is he supposed to even just say something? Yeah, we’re just just to say something close. No, I do think I do think though because I I said this earlier, but I really do think the starting lineup I I think we could all agree is going to be just their top five guys. And I know you say like maybe not Kell and I don’t know if Kell is their top five guy or if it’s Yoic. We’ll see how that plays out. But I just think they’re they’re going to lean into this. They’re going to lean into the hero Powell Wiggins with BAM thing and Kell is just going to have to learn along the way with these guys and fit a certain role and we’ll see how this kind of works out because I know we’ve been talking about playmaking. Yoic, put the ball in his hands, let him kind of create. Well, if you have DaVon that’s playing in a lot of his lineups, how is that going to look? Are they still going to let DaVon because DaVon could still bring the ball down the floor and initiate, but Yovvis just being the primary playmaker? Uh, they’re going to have to lean into that. And as much as we talk about rotation, the biggest thing to me is like just lineups that they figure out. Like that I know we did the podcast the other other day about like twoman combos, but it’s like it’s really about the lineups that they play and playing the right guys together. And that’s why you have certain guys that we haven’t seen really play together. Who’s Powell gonna play well next to Wiggins? I think we, you know, we haven’t gotten enough of that to really see the connection. I know we brought up Hero, Yovic, Wear is something I just want to see like them playing consistent. I thought that was one of those groupings that just played really well. Yo, uh, DaVon Mitchell and Haywood Eisert, they have a defensive connection. Like if they could just figure out who plays well together because maybe the question isn’t about who’s just the best player that’s going to fit in the rotation. Maybe Fontekio plays really well with a certain lineup in camp where like he just fits really well with the Dave John Haywood pairing or like something like that or if Larson maybe Larson plays really well with some of the best guys on the team. He plays well in place of Powell and there’s a certain lineup that works there. So sometimes this isn’t just about your best players playing in rotation. It’s about finding some different lineups. And I think the key about what you said about the depth of this team compared to last year is I’m picturing a lot more unique and diverse lineups this year than I could last year. Last year, you couldn’t really think of many. I mean, a lot of them, no offense, but it’s like Kevin Love at the five. You’re still trying to figure out certain lineups that you’re trying to figure out around like there’s this year I have a little bit more there’s a little more creativity I feel like spoke can find to just like use different lineups. And we did that episode on uh on three three adjustments he can make. By the way, I figured out as we close here, I figured out what Gre Greg’s is. To your point, to your point, right? At the end of the day, tough question. I’m interested to see if you guys can come up with some for me. Have a good day, everybody.
