Bucks jersey numbers from the Giannis era that MUST be retired | Gyro Step

Hey there, welcome to the Euroep, a Milwaukee Bucks podcast, proudly a part of the Blue Wire Podcast Network and GPN and presented by our pals at Prize Picks where you can use code Euroep to get $50 when you play $5 for the first time. Win or lose. More on them later, and what I’m feeling in baseball on the prize picks agenda, although football just a couple weeks away. We’re almost back. Pretty excited for that, too. I am Ty Windish joined as always by the ubiquitous Rohan Kotti. Rohan, good morning sir. A morning pod for us again. How are you doing? I’m doing well. You know you you’ve trained me well in the ways of morning pods. So this is this is nothing new for me. No, no, this is this is uh like riding a bike. We’re we’re real used to this. So, as the title does says, we’re going to do the what jersey numbers from the Giannis era, quote unquote, need to be retired. And I’ve got a fun sub question for you as well in that. But we’re going to start with a little news and notes as many podcasts out there and in the space do. First one, most important one. I mean, we were so sad that we did not see Tadasa Satarakmpo on Greece’s Euro basket roster, preliminary roster. And I think just yesterday or maybe the day before this week, we get the bomb from I think Harris Stavro first or I forget who first posted, probably Harris Daval, the great uh Greek journalist. But the Nasis has been added. He’s back. I don’t know if they weren’t sure if the recovery like the timing is a little confusing to me, but the important piece is there is a good chance, especially given it’s a little thin of a roster that Thenus will be on the roster and playing with Giannis and Kostas in Euro Basket in like less than a month. Yeah. And I think friendlies start uh before then. So, and training camp and all that. So, he’s there. He’s ready. He’s uh he’s back, baby. the the uh Eurob basket account on Twitter was like every squad needs a Nasis and then it’s just a graphic of the NASA static called off by Greece for FIA Eurob basket 2025 and I’m like this just just mainline that mainline that straight into my veins. It’s it’s so good. He’s back. He’s back. I don’t know what else to say besides that he’s back. Um I Andre Jackson Jr. I hope you’re renting. That’s what I’ll say in addition that he’s back because I I hope your guarantee date gets pushed a little bit more. I mean, it can only get pushed so much farther. Uh he’s only got a couple months left. I think it’s got the they had the absolute deadline is like January 15th or something. Uh he’s already got it back to October, I believe. So, we’re we’re getting there. Um no, I I it’s unclear to me at this point. I don’t have a strong feeling on if he will be added to the Bucks or not. I I I think it’s been less likely since the Livingston signing, but I I guess let’s do that first and then we can talk about what we the expectations for Euro basket and thus obviously everything’s got to be tempered because he is coming back off the major it was ACL right like Achilles Achilles that no wonder um absolute devastating injury that he is back from which there was question of if he would but there probably shouldn’t have been knowing just how much of a worker Then Nasis is But do you think and I I know not hope I know you would love him to be on the roster but do you think he’s going to be a buck for the coming season? I think honestly it might depend on Euro basket. I think they’re going to wait. They’re going to see uh both himself and the Bucks are going to be taking a close look at this competition seeing what he’s at. Did you see by the way there’s a clip posted of a analysis and it it was kind of like it’s kind of sad. It’s like he was talking about his injury. He’s like, “Man, I just I hope I’m going to be able to walk at my brother’s wedding.” Like that was his first thought after it happened. I was like, “Oh my god, The Nasis, I feel so bad for you.” That’s horrible. But he was able to and now he’s back. He’s playing basketball. It’s awesome. It’s a It’s a great story. Um I think that this will really depend on what happened at Eurob Basket. You know, you know that who I kind of compare it to. It’s It’s a little bit of a It’s a different situation, but I kind of think about it like Gershy. uh who kind of made a massive massive impact after the Olympics and that led him to be able to have a roster spot. I don’t think it’s going to be to that extent. Uh but I do think that the Bucks and Thanos, they’re going to really look at this Euro basket and say, “Okay, what you got?” Yeah. I mean, is the is is this the closest we’ve ever been at the Nasis having a pathway to like starting at the three on the Milwaukee Bucks? How many threes does TA have to hit in like five Euro basket games for you to beat that drum in early September? Uh, at least five. In five games, he needs to hit eight threes. That’s not that many. I was hoping you could at least double digits. Well, that I mean, it’s he’s still it’s for a starter on an NBA team. We’ll see how he looks. You’re right. Um I I know about 10. How about 10? 10. I think 10 is at least a better number. Um, at least two in every game. I mean, to start is is a lot, but it is their most wide open position as we’ve talked about. Um, could start Kyle Kosma at the three, man. I’ve seen him I’ve seen him run more recently. It’s a pretty big. You’re not going to be able to You’re not going to be able to say that for too long. That’s true. I I will. Well, he’s got a lot of YouTube videos, so it’ll be it’ll be even during Euro Basket if if the Nasis does get to play, which hopefully is he putting Is he putting running videos in his substack? Not in the sub the substack. He sticks to the writing. He dips the pen. It’s writing focus. The YouTube series is different. So, that’s where you can see clips. Are you grinding, Kyle? I am I am on all the I haven’t I haven’t done episode two yet, but I did episode one. Um he li he lives I I don’t want to dox him but he put the video up like he walked over to like uh one of the one of the recognizableish beaches on Lake Michigan. He’s just like in Milwaukee for a lot of this. He’s like traveling but then in Milwaukee I’m like oh that’s cool. I think he’s trying I think he’s trying to be a good offseason buck. I was about to just straight up dox him. I was like that shouldn’t do that. I I He kind of did it to himself, but yeah, he like shows him walking through his neighborhood and like his dog saw some deer. It It was neat. Cool. Yeah, that’s your That’s your cous content update. That this is my new beat. You’re You are such a sick Elman. Yeah, he’s he’s doing a lot of basketball work this summer, so that’s We’ll see how it turns out. That’s good. Is he shrinking by like three inches? Because that’s what he He doesn’t need to shrink. I mean, if the shot falls If the shot falls, he’s fine. either at the rim or three or pres or ideally both. Well, no, we we’ll save this first. What are your expectations now for TA at Euro Basket? So, I’m not sure he’s going to start. As we’ve talked about, Tyler Dorsy, important spacing. And then for anyone not familiar who hasn’t watched the team before, they have the pair of Kostas, uh, Slucas, and Papa Nicolo. Those guys are good. Those are good offensive wing players who pair well with Giannis. I kind of wonder if Kostas is gonna start at the five. I mean, that could those five players could be a lineup because there’s no Poppy Giannis this time. Um, we’ll we’ll see what they do or they just start Giannis at the five. The thing about Euro Basket is it’s just a big physical competition usually. So, I don’t know if you I mean I guess you could just go all speed. Obviously, Giannis can hang in there with those big guys, but he’s bigger than Kostas, frankly. uh Picassis plays more like a center. We’ll see what they do. Um but I do think he could have a big role off the bench because if the athleticism is mostly back and again that’s kind of like we’ll see. I mean it’s pretty soon return from the Achilles that is important to have in in Euro Basket and one thing about the Nasis actually talking about his game which you know usually we kind of talk about like what he does for the team and everything. He is a slasher he is athletic. He can absolutely poster someone if he gets that lane to the rim. That would really help a a defender and a really good defender, but just offensively that would help a Greek team that just doesn’t have a ton of that outside of Giannis. Yeah. And also it’s not like the NBA game where you need to have like four out one in your team. You can’t you don’t need to because there’s no like 3se secondond violations and things like that. You can play a different style of basketball. And like we like I said last week, you just put Giannis in a competition like that, especially with the group they have, you should be able to dominate. Yeah. But what about what do you think from TA though? Here here’s my here’s my TA thing. Okay. What if when he’s just been, you know, men on on the mend with his Achilles? What if he just became a sharpshooter? I mean, it it’s it’s eluded the whole family so far, but maybe he could be the one to break through. Maybe he’s going to start a trend and they’ll all follow in order. Yeah. Why is it everyone like none of them can shoot? Alex was supposed to be the guard one and unfortunately it just really Alex was supposed to be better than Giannis according. No, I mean that’s you can’t trust Giannis talking about people he loves. Unfortunat I mean it’s a good quality to have but he is he has more gas than shell for people he loves and we all know it. So I never took that one that seriously but he it was supposed to I I thought I looked at it as like he’s kind of the guard skills one TA’s kind of the the defensive wing Kas is the center and then Giannis is Giannis. If they were all to ever play together put together pretty Yeah, pretty much. Uh it’s like the three of them fuse like uh like Gundam and then he’s the result. Yeah. But then you also add like William well LeBron James. No, let’s not be too unkind. But no, it’s what I’m looking for from Thosis is one, like you were saying earlier, I want to see if the athleticism is still there. Yeah. Or back. Or back. I mean, it’s it’s it could come after this, too. Yeah, that’s true. I want to see some flashes of it. Yeah. Yeah. I want to see like some hints that it’s still there. I want to see the defensive intensity. I want to just see him just being animated on the sidelines. Yeah, we’ll get that no matter what. I mean, he did that with freshly torn Achilles. So, I want to see him start something. Oh, he probably will. That’s going to be fun. They don’t have Germany, right, in this group? No. So, that that would be the best time for a little a little fra. You know, things can start quick in Euro Basket. Things always start very quick in Euro. Mo Vagner does ratchet that one down a little bit. It does. So, uh, but and then I also I want I want to see the shot. I want to see if he can consistent like if he’s taking threes but also making threes. I think taking it might be even a little more important because it’s like the confidence in his shot. Yeah. It’s like where he wants to be as a player. That’s what I’m looking for. That’s a good one. I I do wonder, you know, if if if it if he gets out there and you can just kind of see like didn’t really get the speed back, which I think would set him back quite a ways. I think pretty much everything else he does as a basketball player is predicated on that athleticism. Like the way people talk about Giannis, I think that stuff is not as true with Giannis, but very true with Dasis as a basketball player. Um, do we see the long like kind of awaited or wished for by some who recognize the value of having him around but are care guarding roster spots? Do we see the coach transition? I I still wonder. I don’t think he wants to, but I I I think that’s like the flip side of, oh, if he comes out and looks great, do they clear the roster spot for him? On the flip side, there I think there is a world and I hope this doesn’t happen, but it’s just like oh, it’s like it’s just it’s hard to get back from an injury like that, especially po post 30. I I don’t know. I I think we’ll see. I’m certainly not rooting for that, but I know there’s a lot of people listening right now probably saying like, let’s just bring him as a coach. Pay him minimum salary to be a coach and you get all the benefits and keep, you know, a talented young player and Andre Jackson Jr. like whatever else. Yeah. and you’re close enough to where you record the analysis. So, yeah, I mean, probably a more flexible schedule, I would imagine. You’ve there’s there’s a there’s a wide opening in the player podcast landscape. Now, let’s move on. Um, it’s a big time opening. Um, let’s just move on. I’ve got the Swaggy P branded Jennings pod is going to take off. That’s what I’m I’ve two bucks. I know. One Bucks legend. One Bucks hater. Yeah. Yeah. I was Didn’t Nick Young say he was going to take it over? I don’t I don’t know. I’m I’m not I’m not I I’m not weighing in. I work in the industry. I’m not weighing in. Um I’m good. I’m good on this one. That’s why I’m talking. That’s fine. Yeah. I I do I’ll I’ll comment on Brandon Jennings. I think it can be odd sometimes, but I do appreciate that he genuinely has become this like self-appointed Bucks ambassador. We do need more of that. He takes that seriously. He takes that very seriously. So, I I do appreciate that. I think Yeah, I I think people are split on Teague in that sense. I think Teague does an okay job, too. I think some people are offended by the way he talks about the post championship celebration, but I kind of get it his thoughts on it. They didn’t they didn’t do anything. I think it’s half about Milwaukee, half about Giannis, frankly, but yeah, just not a I think not a Magic City guy. No, I bet he’d love the wings. Teague did spend a lot of time in Atlanta. So those are a lot of time in Atlanta. Um but I I think overall still and he has been one of the ones I’ve talked about this before. He and Draymond and some others have really stuck up for Thanos as like an important player and presence. Um, so I I think we’re actually I I feel like versus this new like player era and even coaching like Doc getting on more shows and stuff for while he’s here at least, we’re getting more pro Milwaukee where it used to just be nothing like what like the quote unquote old media. I think the whole new media thing is overblown, but like there was just like Boston or New York or LA or just like flat boring national. At least we’re getting some Bucks propaganda now. I think Perk is on our side. Oh, all these names you’re listening are on Milwaukee side. I’m like, a dang it. We We got Perk is Perk is saying they’re disrespecting the roster, which I agree with. I would also agree with that. But we did just talk about Thanos is slain to be a starter. Yeah. So, that’s our job. That’s true. Uh, but I don’t know if that’s respecting the roster. Um, oh, real quick. Uh, number changes and then we’ll do the retired numbers thing. So, I want your Oh, first first big number change though. What? Go ahead. Chris is back to 22. Oh, yeah. What did they wear last season? I I didn’t even remember. It was like 25 or 24 or 32 or something. Did they have a 22 leave? Yeah. Rashan Holmes, you couldn’t have just bought the number. Chris Chris might be cheap. You can’t you can’t change mid-season. Oh, I got I see. Okay. Yeah. So, like Rashan Holmes couldn’t change from 22. No, he’s gone. That’s why I thought they brought back. Okay. Okay. Did they There’s no shot they brought Rashan Holmes. I think there was I thought that was Rashan Holmes news. There’s no way. If the Wizards are signing, I think he’s cut loose. No, he’s not. Yeah, he’s considering Fenerbachce offer. He’s done. That’s also an option for Thanos, by the way. Sorry, we Yeah, in terms of like if if the Bucks don’t think he’s viable to be on the on the roster, I think he might consider a Euro League up there. There were reports that he did so Mark Stein of Mark Stein substack was the one who reported and DLLS um that like Stein Line that’s the Oh, the Stein Line. well, whatever, that the um that the Bucks were going to sign him. But then there was also a report, I think, from Europe, probably Greece, that he was like considering playing for like a club that like he know like the owner he has a relationship with. So, it seems like there’s just nothing been really decided yet. Um but yeah, glad Chris got back to 22. Makes me kind of sick to see it in the Wizards uniform. um one year after the trade, the Koosma Middleton trade, if he were traded and bought out, he could sign back with the Bucks. It’s all I’m saying. One year after they traded him somewhere else and that team bought him out, which I don’t see as likely, but that is also a possibility. That’d be that’d be cool, too. Yeah, I agree. Uh but good good call there. I almost forgot that. Uh Bucks number changes. Kyle Koosma taking number zero last worn by Damen Lillard. What are your thoughts? I think it’s really funny. Um I think I don’t I I’ve I’ve seen a lot of uproar about this. Yeah. I don’t care. I really don’t. Like yeah, I love Dame. I love Dame and I I really appreciate his time in Milwaukee. You are not going to hear me say a bad thing about Dame’s time in Milwaukee in terms of Dame as a person and as a player. I stand by that. I’m not going to say anything bad about that. He’s not getting his jersey retired. No. No, he’s he’s not. I mean, there’s no there’s literally no case for it. Exactly. So, I don’t really see an issue with it. No, of course not. So, I I just I think it’s fine. Whatever. Like, he used to be number zero. He couldn’t be because Dane was here and now Dame’s not here. He can be zero again. Yeah. I I I as precious as I may be about the number 11 being worn again, I the zero was never in the conversation. I What do you make? One or two all-star teams, Dame? Two Allstars. Two Allstars. Two. That’s good. But it’s the two years piece. And you know, one really good playoff half. The rest of the playoffs rough. Not really his fault, but just the way it went. The team didn’t accomplish anything. I mean, the NBA Cup, I guess, would be the the the highlight of the the tenure as as we’ve talked about, but I I don’t think you retire a number for a good not sensational, if I remember right, NBA Cup championship game. So, like AJ, that’s just not how it works at that point. Yeah, exactly. Um, so yeah, you might not even make the roster. Yeah. Uh, so I I don’t I don’t think I I think people just and I I see why because the playoffs went so poorly. I just think anything Kyle Koosma right now there’s just a segment of people who are like this is stupid caught him immediately and I I hate this being done. Same thing like I think if it was almost any other Bucks like the fun post with Giannis and Dame earlier in the offseason on Instagram I think most people would be like oh that’s hilarious if Bobby Portoris did that and kind of did and that was the reaction and it was most people are like this is so bad this is terrible you’ve been indoctrinated by his YouTube videos Ty I’m not indoctrinated I just I don’t I don’t hate him as a person no I don’t hate him as a person either I do hate him as a player but That’s a difference. Last time Big Coos wore number zero, the team won a championship. That’s all I’m saying. That is true. That is one data point. That is one of one. Uh and then we had a swaperooi. So Pat Cottan traded Chris Livingston takes number 24 and then abandons number seven which Kevin Porter Jr. then takes. I’ll go first. I’ll go first. Okay. Okay. I think my I think I’m okay if 24 is just in the rafters behind me. I I understand that the Bucks are unrelated to Pat Conton. I don’t think he’s gone now. I don’t I think the statue of limitations is over. Also, we’re not I don’t think we’re selling them anymore, so it really doesn’t matter. They can’t They’re not going to come take it from me. I don’t think it’s just Bucks Bucks guards come in and give me that. You can’t have that blank 24. Um, I I I get that he’s not he didn’t accomplish enough overall to get retired. I do think there is a light precedent for it, the Blazers, and we’ll have the whole combo. Um, I guess we can kind of we can kind of save it. We can kind of do it now. But I’m fine with it. Um, and hey, if Chris Livingston wants to embody ultimate role player energy this year, I’m I’m okay with it. And then seven is a good number for Kevin Porter Jr. It’s a cool number. I actually for some reason I forgot CL was wearing it before and I was like did that is that not retired? I was kind of confused. Um so sorry Chris Livingston. I don’t I don’t have a lot of the Utah game. It was so long ago I don’t remember the number being worn at the time. Um but I think it’s a good number. Yeah, it’s a fun number. I don’t know. It wasn’t 77. No, that’s Johnny O’Brien. It’s also Ursan. Three. Three. Okay. Sure. Also a good number, though. Also a good number. But here’s the thing. I think the funniest part of this is that Chris Livingston was just waiting for Pat so he could get You think every every trade done deadline and offseason he was like, I heard you’re going. It’s cool, right? if you’re gone. It’s just like really like I don’t maybe CL sees like Pat like having a great conversation with Peter Fagan just like snaps his fingers like damn it. They’re not going to trade him. They’re just another business deal. I want that number. I can’t buy it from him. He’s too savvy. I’m not an NBA player. No, I think that’s very obvious. That’s correct. Uh you didn’t have to say like that. Uh, I I I was I I was saying it to the not NBA player, not the obvious. I’m kidding. I’m kidding. You can you can very much say that. I just I don’t get it. Like why why do you need to have this? Like Chris Livingston, you are you barely made the roster. Yeah. Well, you were you were unmade it and then made it back. Yeah. There is an avenue for you not making it back. Yes. I he just likes the number. Maybe it’s a new Bucks era for him. New contract. Yeah. I I guess there’s not a lot of jerseys floating out there, so it’s probably not a not alienating to Although the diehard CL7 fans now they’re like, “Oh, you know, you can look at it as a positive. I have the old school the retro CL jersey.” Or as a negative, now my CL jersey is outdated. CL7 is close to CR7. You know, I don’t get it. Ronaldo. Oh. not a huge not a huge footie guy. But anyway, those are those numbers. The other big number, Gary Harris taking number 11, which we will talk about right after. Here’s a number 50. That is again code Euroep and the Prize Pix app today to get $50 instantly when you play your first $5 lineup. Prize picks run your game. Do you think Andrew Vaughn has ever listened to the song Take Her to the O? I don’t think I’ve listened to that song. It’s by King Vaughn. Oh, yeah. Okay. Okay. I know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He’s only 27. So, there is a shot. There’s What? He’s 27. He’s a year older than me. Yeah. He’s three years younger than Giannis. He looks like Joe Prunty’s slightly younger brother. It’s crazy. But hey, lot of lot of upside ahead of him. I don’t think the Brewers will pay him any more to play baseball, but I’m enjoying this run while it lasts. Gary Harris number 11. I don’t like it. Let me make something clear up top. They could Lopez wore number 11. Brook, thank you. Brook Lopez wore number 11. They could still retire it, right? Like they’re they’re clearly not holding it, but it could still be retired. I don’t think whoever makes the Bucks uniform decision anticipates a long lengthy retirement combo worthy Bucks career from Gary Harris. You never know, but uh it’s probably a safe guy to allow to have that number. I mean, did they imagine that for Michael Red’s number? I I I made the same point yesterday and I think it is a bad practice to give out numbers. You may retire someday. I do think Michael Reddd and Ray Allen got robbed of even having a conversation about it, which I think I don’t think either are slam dunks, so to speak, for getting a number retired with the franchise, but Michael Reddd was like what, third or second or fourth in scoring at the time when he stopped playing for the Bucks, which is pretty meaningful. Obviously, the team never did anything, but he was the lone bright spot on those teams. And of course, Ray Allen led the way on the only meaningful Bucks era between what, like 89 or so when the last great 80s team was and then 2019 or 2018 when they won a playoff series for the first time. Again, that’s a 30 years or so that they just accomplished no series wins or very very few. The ‘9s were a very bad bad time. Um, didn’t play for as long as he should have. Not really his fault really. It’s George Carl’s fault. did accomplish a lot in Milwaukee. Always George Carl’s fault. Always George Carl’s fault. But yeah, 34 and 22 kind of got blocked from those two. Don’t think that’s going to happen with Gary Harris. I I hope it does. I would love for it to be a combo one day of like man Gary starts averaging 50. Yeah. Just like he’s like West Matthews Bucks West Matthews but scoring like Blazers Wes Matthews somehow for five years run off a title. I I would love to have the combo Gary Harris. Um, but this of course has spawned a whole thing of like, does Brook’s number deserve to be retired? A lot of people I I I’m going to make an announcement. I think I’m going to stop tweeting. Yeah, it’s just terrible. It’s not fun. It’s terrible. And then I realize I’m arguing with someone and I’m like, this isn’t probably not even a person. It’s probably a bot. 30 followers. I don’t know anyone they follow. Why am I doing this? See, here’s the thing, though. You can tweet. Just don’t argue with people. Well, it’s hard for me, but I I might have to do that. I might have to just do like send it send it. Close the app. I That’s what I’ve been trying to do, but I’m just not good at it. But then I was also like, what do I gain? What is that? What do What do any of us gain by doing anything? Well, I hate to room that people I So, when we do the pod, I gain a good time talking to my buddy Rohan. We also get paid. That is true. I don’t have a good time tweeting and I don’t get paid because I don’t pay I don’t pay in to get paid which is which is like a Ponzi scheme basically. Yeah. Hey, if you give us money, you’ll be able to make money. Yeah. Like allegedly now that is what they do. But anyway, but yeah, sort of the whole combo about retired numbers. But I do think it’s a it’s a worthy combo to have because I think three of the four that are real discussions. Sorry to Pat Coneton again who we kind of covered already are no longer Bucks. So presumably their Bucks accomplishments are over at least for now. Hopefully Chris comes back here. Let’s start here. I mean we always skip Giannis. I want to start with Giannis. Obviously there’s no debate that Giannis is 34. Giannis is getting I the day he retires I want that statue announced. Yes. I wanted to know it’s before he retired. My my question is this. I I I want him to build it now. He should get a statue. He should obviously 34 is going in the rafters in fiser form. When did he become raftersable by the box first MVP? That was my first thought too cuz I just don’t think so. 2019. Yeah. I I don’t 2020 technically but No, it was in 2019. It was a 2019 20 season. No, it was 1819. Are you serious? 1920 was the second one. Yeah, it was a 61 61. Oh, yes. Sorry. Sorry. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Sorry. So, I think you’re right. So, this would have been the accomplishments by then. I’m not going to look at the aggregate numbers. Probably not that high. Like, you don’t think he ranked that high in most Bucks categories yet. He he had six years in, but the first two were 6.8 8 and 12.7 points per game respectively. Does play a lot of games though. He had an MVP second in defensive player of the year. Um he had two other top 10 MVP finishes. He had most improved. He had three allstars. He had uh a first team all defense, a second team all defense, two second team allNBAs, one first team AllNNBA, and led them to the conference finals on a 60- win team by that point. Yeah, I think that’s I don’t think there’s any other answer. I mean, I think you look at it’s that it’s that year. It’s that year. You look at the other It’s the year that Dianis was able to be on a good team and also had a good enough team around him to be able to have good accomplishments and that’s it. Like he he did he he climbed the mountain top that year. Yeah. That the only that was the that was the year they were like, “Okay, this guy is a superstar, not an allstar.” Yeah. like he he was he averaged 27 the year before and right like he’s second team all NBA but he that’s like he he’s a star th that year it’s like okay this guy is potentially one of the greatest to ever play the game. Yeah. I I think you look at it compared to and I think this is important context and the Bucks have kind of deviated from this. They initially set a pretty lack standard for jersey retirement. I think it’s important to go through them. Oscar Robertson, it’s really carried by the championship. He had a great 7071 year. His first year there, he was an all-star twice. He was fifth in MVP that 7071 year that the Bucks really just blitzed through the league. Obviously was not the better player on the team and kind of slipped post championship, which understandable. He was old, but I think I think pretty ironclad. I don’t think anyone would really argue that one. Junior Bridgeman, may he rest in peace. I think this one is a little sentimental. Um, he was one of the great sixth men of all time. He played a long time with the Bucks. He played 10 total seasons, including nine in a row to start his career. Averaged 14, 3.7, 2.5 assists over 711 games. I think everyone loves Junior Bridgeman. Everyone loved Junior Bridgeman, unfortunately. And obviously no one’s going to argue that, but the in terms of total accomplishments, it’s a little light around the league. I think Cindy Mree, Marcus Johnson are very bulletproof. Both were great players, making all-star teams and uh finishing uh well, Sid won two DPOs. Marcus was top 10 and MVP voting twice in four all-star games with the Bucks. Like that’s I think and and this at the time second best era of Bucks basketball and the last great one for a very long time. Bob Dandrch I Bob Dandrich it’s like I it’s really the championship I think mostly third best guy in the championship team. Made three all-stars as a buck that’s not nothing. First eight years there and came back to play 10 more games and retired. Was a very good player. um and I think was on the championship team. I don’t think any of those are very controversial. Maybe Bridgemond, but I I think I think it’s it’s valid. John Mccclaclin I’ve seen people argue with. I think there’s a misunderstanding. The original Buck the original Buck, right? Like the first Buck stayed a long time, made an all-star team in the Bucks first ever season. So was really like the bright spot of the team pre Kareem and then did play on the championship team as well. So was like a key kind of role player there and stayed with the organization forever. Um and the Mac fund like is very important to the fabric of the a fabric of the franchise and the city. I don’t think there that should be argued with. I I think like the Thunder retired Nick Collison’s number like M McGlaughlin was a better player than Nick Collison. But I don’t I don’t quibble with the Thunder because he was important to your franchise. That’s fine. Bob Laneir. This is one of the two where I’m like this this was a mistake. One of the like not for him as a player overall but him as a Milwaukee Buck. It was it was a mistake. Obviously one of the a Pantheon center a Hall of Famer eight time all-star All-Star game MVP all rookie. I think he did that in Oh, no he did not. But came to Milwaukee when he was 31. made one all-star as as a buck and that’s it. He came 22nd in MVP. I was going to say the 22nd MVP and you just look at the stats and it’s like he started 15 and seven but then it was like 14 and six 13 and five. He made the all-star team on 13 and five. I’m not really sure. I mean the Bucks were just really good. And that’s the other thing. He was on He was on really good teams. How did that happen? He was on really good teams. Um so that helps as well. What a weird season that was. That was the one where I think they asked Marcus Johnson to score less, but I don’t know how Laneir was the really. So, Monreef and Marcus finished seventh and 17th in MVP that year and Quinn Buckner made all defense and Brian Wyers was there scoring 16 or 16 and four like he does, but Cydney Monree and Liry the Allstars. I think it was probably a name recognition thing, but Lenir, I don’t think I don’t think there’s really a way to spin it. He was a not top two most important player to those great 80s teams. He brought like a legitimacy and a veteran savvy. I I think it’s a stretch. It is. However, it does give some uh what’s the word I’m looking for? Um, it sets a precedent for a guy like Brook Lopez. Yes, it does. Um, we’re we’re almost on. Do you have any other notes on the first five we went through here? No, not really. I mean, I think I think Laneir is the weakest. I think Brian Wyers is pretty questionable. Brian Wyers is also very questionable. I just think he was a good player and he was a good player on the Bucks for a long time and was on a lot of their good teams. He was the the main return from the Kareem trade which I think is a lot of the reason why they did it and 18 19 nearly 20 for the last two points per game. So was like an important apex scorer on the Bucks when they they needed one post trade, but they were also bad when he was their best scorer. Like a middling team. They snuck into the playoffs two of those years. They did win one playoff series uh with Don Nelson, but it was a three-gamer where they swept the Suns two to zero and then they did lose in seven to the Nuggets, but and but Marcus was there. So that was that was the reason why they were able to do that and Brian Wyers became a little less important on the team. So I also think Wyinners is a stretch. I think it was kind of like the Kareem trade wasn’t that bad. We were tired of guy’s number. So I I don’t love it. And then Kareem 33. Obviously Kareem is obviously. Yeah. Yeah. So should we should we go through and see which ones are the obvious ones from this era? Yes. First there’s two that are done. Yes. Giannis and Chris. Those two should get a joint statue. Yes. No, they should be two statues. There should be a Giannis on his own statue and then there should be a Giannis and Chris statue. Number one and two in games played and I think they’re close to that in score. No, they’re not close to that in scoring because of Kareem. But Chris is high on the list for a lot of categories. Yeah. Hopefully he’ll be able to jump higher on that list. He’s third in scoring. Third in scoring. Yeah. I don’t know if he’s catching Kareem. No, but all over the Bucks history key moments I I spoke too during the first retired the first retired number segment. I just realized. So yeah, we can we can leave Yiannis and Chris. I think those should be agreed upon. Um Brook Lopez. Next I was going to say next is probably Drew. Oh, I disagree. No, I mean like next to talk about I would I would lean No. Yeah. I would lean no. Three years, one all-star. Uh, three alldefense teams, three top 10 DPOI finishes, the championship. It honestly, he may have president from Oscar Robertson. Didn’t have didn’t peak as high, but was more steadier over the It’s almost like a perfect faximile. Yeah. One less year, but you know, Robertson tailed off quite a bit. It’s close. I’d say it’s close, but I would He’s responsible for the one of the greatest moments in franchise history. Yeah. He’s had multiple playoff game-winning defensive plays. Yep. All-star with the Bucks. completely fell off a cliff offensively whenever the playoffs came. Yeah, but I I do think I think him and Brooke both changed the Bucks and made them better enough to win the title. I agree. And I think I I came in thinking no, but I actually kind of think there’s a pretty good case for Drew to also get his number retired. I think there I think I think Brooke is stronger. Yeah, just longer tenure. That’s why to me that’s the thing. So yeah, let’s let’s talk let’s talk about Brooke. Three years to seven years seven years as a buck completely changed the way this franchise operates. Yep. He came in with he was part of that contingent with Bud with Pat that turned this team into like that year where we were saying Giannis became like okay it’s obvious that is the year that Brook Lopez came to town. Yep. Completely unlocked how Giannis can play on both sides of the court. Uh has set the precedent for it because when he’s gone, in comes younger Brook Lopez. They immediately go get Yeah. They they do everything possible to get Miles Turner and it it just shapes the way you play basketball with Giannis. There is no Giannis winning all Okay, I’m not going to go that direction. Yeah. Uh it is more difficult for Giannis to reach the peaks that Giannis has reached without Brook Lopez like culture setting. Um but yeah it’s changed their defense forever to your point. They they just want to stay like that now. Peaked at actually I kind of forget 22 23 peaked as a 166 guy adding two and a half blocks where his first team all defense and second team or second in DPI. Also that’s coming off back surgery. That’s coming off back surgery. Um, pretty pretty amazing season though. I I I didn’t realize he peaked scoring quite that high as a Buck. So, obviously did not peak quite as high as Drew in terms of overall production, but I think in terms of all of like the the things he accomplished over time, his place in like the block leaderboards for the franchise. Um, also like the the title run, right? like the block on KD in the Net series. When Giannis goes out, he pretty much leads the way to close out the Hawks and get to the finals, even if he wasn’t close. Whenever Giannis was out, it was Brook Lopez stepping up. And Giannis said they should retire it. So, I think his vote should count double. Yeah, I think so, too. I think you do whatever Giannis says. Yeah, I think I think really those four I’m fine if all four make it. And I think there’s people say, “Oh, they’re going to run out of numbers, blah blah blah blah blah. Look at the Celtics. Well, like the Blazers didn’t run out of numbers when they retired like seven guys from their title team because it turns out when you’re playing in Portland or Milwaukee, it’s really hard to win more. And I think if our issue ends up being they’ve won so many titles, we’re out of numbers. That’s a good problem to have. Yeah. Like we’re not close to that. And I see people posting like, “Oh, you’re acting like they won six titles together.” No, imagine like they won one, which took them 50 years to do. And it feels right now like we might be lucky if it happens again in the next 50 years. So that I I think it’s worthy of of like enshrining the team that that did that. Uh I don’t celebrate celebrate what you do. Bobby Portoris. They need to win another one. They needed win another one. Yeah. Didn’t peak as high. Didn’t have the individual accomplishments. A crucial part of the team. Got benched for a lot of that postseason, but came up big when they needed him in the finals. PJ Tucker just doesn’t have the the length, right? I mean, what started on the team? That’s like I’m not making the case. I’m just saying obviously only played 20 regular season games as a buck. If he if he came in as a buck and averaged like 20 a game like he averaged two. Yeah, that’s the thing. I was like, “Oh, is there like a could he be considered like a CC Sabathia as a player?” No, CC was far more and I the Brewers won’t retire CC’s number either. Oh, the last thing on this, we are out of time. They need to do a Ring of Honor. Yeah, absolutely. That’s the That’s the best. I know Adam and Jordan have been banging this drum for years, but that’s what you need to do. You You have to. Yeah, that’s the way you can celebrate these guys without having like retired jersey discussions. Like Bobby Poris, obvious ring of honor should be clearly in. Yes. Drew Holiday, even if he’s not retired, obvious ring of honor. Same with Brooke. If you disagree, you can’t disagree that he should at least be in a Ring of Honor somewhere in the building or in the premises. Exactly. Do that and you’ve solved all your problems. Yeah. But there is uh there’s a lot more discussion to come, I guess. Let’s see if Gary Harris comes out here and has if he wins MVP. I’m sorry, Brooklyn. Can you imagine a world where Gary Harris is the lit? I just needed the 2025 26 NBIA MVP award goes to Gary Harris 46 and six on the way to the Bucks 75 and seven record. I think if he averaged 25 they might be like what happened here and just give him a he might win most improved. Would he be the oldest most improved winner? Probably. Uh I’d have to look at the history. Um, but it usually it’s usually younger players. I don’t think anyone in their 30s has won most improved players. Yeah, I mean I hate the I hate how the award works. They should ban second year players, but that’s a conversation for another time. I agree. But this has been a fun talk. Uh, we are unfortunately out of time. Daryl Armstrong, age 30. Sorry. Go ahead. Oh, wow. Okay. Go off Daryl Armstrong. Clippers. Orlando. Orlando. Who’s the Daryl I’m thinking of on the Clippers? Clipper doesn’t matter. Clipper. [Laughter] Thank you for listening to this episode of the Euroep here on Blue Iron and GPN presented by our wonderful, amazing friends over at Prize Pix. The Milwaukee Bucks are giving out Brook Lopez’ number to Gary Harris, a few other players are switching numbers (including Kyle Kuzma taking Damian Lillard’s 0), and Thanasis Antetokounmpo was called up to Greece’s EuroBasket team. That qualifies as a hot news week in late July for the Gyro Step!

  1. Hot take: They should retire #34 for both Ray Allen and Giannis, and #22 for both Michael Redd and Khris.

  2. Never thought I’d here a β€œTake her to the O” reference on here πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ Ti be listening to the streets πŸ’€

  3. I honestly feel better going into this year. We have gotten younger and have some low risk high reward players. Maybe we can make some more moves but content for now.

  4. Ring of honor, eh – I'm fine with maybe a 10yr reunion and that'll kinda be it for honoring everyone besides 34 & 22 getting rafter'd.

  5. Bobby has a shot, hear me out

IF after this contract, he signs one more 2-4 year team friendly and retires a Buck, he’s rafters
