Hope you’ve had a fantastic week. We are in the midst of the NBA offseason. It’s time to reset following the majority of free agency. Yes, the Wolves have some roster spots to fill. We’ve talked about that at length. We’ll get back to it here soon as well. Um, but today I want to kind of reset the off seasonason, take a a broader look at the NBA power rankings wise. Where are the Wolves right now? There’s a ton of different outlets that have out their power rankings. So, I want to give my thoughts on their thoughts about what where the Wolves rank. We’ll also talk about Dante Devenenzo found out uh this week that an injury unfortunately recurrence of of his injury from last year will keep him from participating in Euro Basket on behalf of Italy. So, a lot to get to here today. A big thank you off the top for making Lockdown Wolves your first listen every single day. Of course, this show is free and available everywhere. You can also watch on the Lockdown Sports Minnesota app on both Roku and Amazon Fire TV. All right, so let’s talk NBA power rankings. Um, now these activities are always obviously pretty subjective. Um, especially when we’re talking in the midst of the offseason. We don’t have records to rely on. We have, you know, it’s it’s the question of what do you what are we balancing? And it’s like I did the player rank show on Wednesday. Um a peak behind the curtain. If you missed that, I ranked uh we’re doing a a lockdown NBA top 100 players. And so before actually I’m submitting my rankings today, my final ones. I gave a sneak peek on my thought process where I was where I was ranking six Wolves players. Yes, six Wolves players in the top 100. Um and I I talked about all that on Wednesday’s show. Similar to that where it’s like, okay, we have the data from last year. What did these players do over the last 12 months? What did they do in the regular season, the postseason last year for their teams? What does their team success look like? What are we balancing that or how are we balancing that against the summer so far, whether or not they played in summer league, etc. What their teams look like and and what what we’re expecting in the fall. It’s a little bit the same with team power rankings where we’re looking at, okay, we’ve got four conference finals teams. Should those be the top four automatically or how much are we factoring in what they did or didn’t do in the offseason? And the Wolves have I like just looking at where the Wolves are across. We’re going to look at four different sites currently that have the Wolves power ranked. Um I believe we’re working on power rankings on the locked down side too. So those obviously will be uh will be the best rankings, the most accurate rankings. I gave my reasons as to why the lockdown rankings will be the best on on Wednesday’s show for for the player rankings. But I feel the same about the team rankings. it it we see a little bit of this this effect of how do how do we um compare the offseason so far to what we saw last year coming through these different site rankings. And what I mean by that is they’re ranked anywhere from number four to number eight on these four different sites. The obvious thing would be to just rank them in the top four based on their finish last year. But you could also take a half step back and be like, “All right, they only won 49 regular season games and they beat a like just saying what it is, they beat a depleted Warriors team minus Steph Curry uh for the majority of that of that series in in five games. And then they also got beat pretty easily by OKC in the conference finals for the second straight year being, you know, knocked out of the conference finals in just five games. So like, are they really a top four team?” It’s funny. It’s It’s just such a really interesting e exercise because um then you’re also at the same time evaluating what each team has done thus far in the offseason. So, we’ll start with the with the um the best ranking because there is one ranking that had the I should say the the ranking where the Timberwolves are the highest. I’m not saying it’s the best. I’ll tell you where I think they rank here in a minute. The Athletic Law Murray at the Athletic has the Timberwolves ranked number four in the entire NBA. He’s got them tiered into top contenders, a tier of in a good place teams, a tier of bubble teams, a tier of not the tier to fear, uh, and then the basement floor. So top contenders, there’s only five. It’s OKC, obviously. He’s got the Knicks at number two, he’s got the Cavs at number three, and he’s got the Timberwolves at number four. And I’ll read what he said real quick. He says two out of three isn’t bad. Minnesota kept the front court together by signing resigning Randol Reed. lost Alexander Walker but uh he talks about TJ Shannon Jaylen Clark Rob Dillingham filling those minutes used a first round pick on Jean Baron to replace Garza Minnesota lost combo for Minot so there’s a spot for another forward Minnesota should look to add overall they’re in a good position to attempt to win the West after losing back toback conference finals so not much there um he’s got Denver five those are the top five teams in in the true contender status interestingly he’s got Houston number six Houston ranks very high across these rankings believe six is the lowest they at um he’s got Houston at six, the Clippers at 7, the Magic at 8, and then on the bubble it goes Warriors Pistons, the Lakers down at 11. That’s important for when we get to the Bleacher Report rankings. He’s got the Lakers at 11, and the Clippers uh and Houston are both in that second tier at six and seven. Six for Houston, seven for the Clippers in that in a good place tier. Okay, so he’s got Minnesota at four ahead of the likes of Houston, both LA teams. Um, I guess those are those are the big ones that are going to we’ll find ahead of Minnesota and some of these other rankings. Uh, the Warriors, I don’t think they’re ever ranked ahead of Minnesota. So, that’s that’s where his rankings are. Um, next, ESPN and CBS both have the Timberwolves ranked number six. Okay, ESPN just came out with theirs and they’ve got Minnesota six. Interestingly, their last ranking, which I think was like right after the draft, had them four. They’ve dropped them two spots to six. The Knicks have gone up two spots after adding Jordan Clarkson and uh Gershon Yabiselli. And Cleveland is still at four, Denver still at three. They jumped Houston all the way from five to two after their what they’ve done in free agency, which is obviously great. Like I’m not going to argue against getting Kevin Durant, Dorian Finny Smith, and Clinkapella. Like, you know, Clink Capella is a pretty a luxury depth piece. I think that perhaps there’s a bit of discounting how much losing Dylan Brooks is going to hurt them. Um, and I know Dylan Brooks comes with his headaches. Timber’s fans know that all too well, but like I think that’s going to matter. I, but there could be some addition by subtraction in terms of uh, moving off of Jaylen Green as well. But I think the Houston ranking number two is a little aggressive. So I go OKC Houston, Denver, Cleveland Knicks, Minnesota at number six, just ahead of the Clippers, the Magic at 8, the Warriors at nine. So that part’s the same as the Athletic. And they’ve got the Lakers at 10. The Athletic had the Lakers at 11. Uh they basically they just flipped them with the Pistons. The other place that had the Timberwolves ranked six is CBS and that’s um Colin Ward Hinger I believe. Yeah, Colin Ward Hettinger who does all the different ranking things at at CBS. We talked about his all of his power ranking stuff last year and overall does a pretty good job. He’s got Minnesota 6 basically the same ranking in terms of the teams just a little bit of a different order as ESPN. goes Thundercavs, Knicks, Rockets, Nuggets, Wolves. I actually can buy that. I don’t that’s so far the most the closest rankings to what I would put it. I think it’s a bit dicey to put Denver ahead of Minnesota. I know that they were a game better in the regular season. I know they have Joic um and yes, they had a decent offseason overall, but I still think putting them ahead of Minnesota at this stage given um the secondary star power that the Wolves can rely on and the Nuggets still have to get around the the Michael Porter Jr. Like even if it it ends up being a good thing for them, it’s still an adjustment. Just like with Minnesota, I wouldn’t have argued I didn’t argue at the time that swapping Raino Devenzo for Towns was a good thing for the roster from a basketball standpoint. They were still good players and it took a hot minute to get that thing figured out. So Minnesota at six on CBS’s rankings, right ahead of the Clippers at seven and the Lakers at eight. So we see the Lakers start to rise in these rankings from 11 on one of them to 10 on the other to eight on this one. And then Memphis surprisingly at nine, Magic at uh the Magic at 10, Warriors at 11, and the Pistons at 12 um on CBS. I want to talk about the Bleacher Report ranking done by Andy Bailey, who normally does a very good job, but I think he missed the mark on this one. We’ll get into that, and I’ll explain where I would have Minnesota ranked on a current NBA power rankings. We’ll do all that here next. Okay, so we’ve talked about the Wolves ranking fourth on the Athletic, sixth on ESPN and CBS. And now we look over at our guy Andy Bailey of Bleach Report who again, you know, he’s a good follow on X, does a good job. I think he missed the mark on these power rankings. Here’s how he’s got it. OKC number one. That’s an obvious one. He’s got Denver number two, which like look, again, I get it. Good off season. Um, also I didn’t even mention the coaching change. Like having David Adelman take over, and I love David Adelman. I think he’s going to do a good job. Obviously did a good job in the playoffs. They took OKC in seven games and that’s I think what some of these rankings are leaning on is like hey look and the roster got better you know uh the depth at least got better adding some veteran depth to the bench. Um I sure yes I buy it but putting them two I don’t necessarily buy. Number three Cleveland that’s fine. Number four Houston which is higher than I would have them but better than ESPN having them at two. Um the Clippers at five which is ultra aggressive. I mean, yeah, five years ago if you had Kawhi Leonard and James Harden on the same team, absolutely. This is aggressive. It’s a little too aggressive. You know what’s even more aggressive is the Lakers at six. Um, I don’t know. Like, I get that they have Luca and a year ago, I think the Mavs were probably ranked in this, you know, range after going to the finals. They would have been in the top five certainly, but there’s a lot we got to see still. Like, and that’s this whole exercise, right? It’s balancing what do we know versus what do we think we know and what do we have no idea. Like we think Luca Donuch is still a top four player. I think he is. In fact, I said that on Wednesday’s show. Got some flak for it. I I don’t I don’t know that it’s that controversial. You could have him third ahead of Giannis if you wanted. I think you have to take last year against the body of evidence from the years before. Lucas still I would easily call him a top five player. If you want to argue, you know, uh I don’t know. I mean, with Jason Tatum out, I don’t think there’s any question that that that that’s where we’re at with Luca and LeBron is still a top 15 player, right? But what’s the depth look like on that team? They they certainly got a little bit better in the offseason. Their offseason moves were um you know, they were okay. They were fine. Um and and certainly better than what they’ve done in in recent previous offseasons. Uh let’s see. So they the additions of Marcus Smart, Jake Larav, and DeAndre Aton are are fine, but they also lost during Finny Smith. Jordan Goodwin was pretty good for them. So I would say they got marginally better. Um, and obviously, you know, everybody’s talking about Luca being in shape. We’ll see. Either way, like Luca is great, but this is a team that lost in the first round in five games and didn’t get clearly better in the offseason. So, if you’re just assuming that healthy in shape Luca and and better acclimated Luca is going to take this team from what the 12th best team or something like where I would probably have them all the way maybe I’d maybe have them like 10th to sixth in the league ahead of the likes of the Knicks and the Timberwolves who both went to the conference finals. That seems crazy to me. The Knicks didn’t get worse either. Like um and that’s who he has seven by the way. He’s got the Knicks at seven and like I’m fine with ranking the Knicks ahead of Minnesota. I don’t have any problem with that. Um they I Yeah, we talked already about adding Jordan Clarkson and Yabby Selli. Like that probably makes them better. They lost some guys. They’re going to lose a Chua. Um but arguably got better. The coaching thing, I like Mike Brown. I like Tibs. I don’t that feels like a pretty flat situation unless unless there’s some volatility there with just unfamiliarity or whatever. Um but anyway, he’s got the Knicks at six, excuse me, at seven. He’s got Minnesota at eight on his rankings. Um he says the Timberwolves cruise both pass both the Lakers and Golden State. This is by the way again Andy Bailey on Bleach Report. But look completely outmatched against the Thunder. That makes at least two paths through the 25 offseason feel viable for the second year in a row. And this is this is from uh a couple of weeks ago. This is this ranking was before um the uh the Kevin Durant stuff by the way which which like again that’s where he had Houston ranked before the Kevin Durant stuff. Uh he says they’re interested Kevin Durant suggests that an offseason move like that would be in play or they could take a more patient approach. Either way they they have arguably the best shooting guard in a league in Anthony Edwards. I should have had that added that caveat at the beginning, but it doesn’t really matter because th this ranking was from um immediately following the finals around the time of the draft, but he had Houston that high and the Lakers that high before the Kevin Durant move was made. Like really early on, he had them fourth, which just seems crazy to me. Um I’d be curious to see where Andy would would rank these teams now. But either way, for all these rankings that were done in the last three to four weeks, Minnesota’s range is from four to eight, I don’t think there’s any anybody that would argue that they’re better than four or worse than eight. Um, that all makes sense to me where I would rank Minnesota. I like I get having OKC one obviously. Um, number two I feel like has to be either the Knicks or the Cavs. I could go either way. That’s two and three in some order. And both of those teams in the Eastern Conference with the Celtics and the Pacers both depleted because of the injuries to Tatum and Hallebertton respectively. Like you can expect one of those teams like either one of those teams should win the conference and and should feel that way going into the season. Now, of course, uh nobody thought the Pacers would win the conference last year, but um here we are. Uh so I think in some order there two and three. I don’t think I would put the Wolves I I go back and forth on this. I think I actually would put the Wolves four. Um I I could I’m okay with Houston four if you want to put Houston four because they were good and they got they were obviously a better regular season team than Minnesota last year from a record standpoint and you know they flamed out in the playoffs in in a round earlier in similar fashion to Minnesota or actually two rounds earlier in similar fashion to Minnesota. Um well I guess they they that series went longer but um I don’t know. I go back and forth on that if you want to put Houston ahead of Minnesota or not. I understand it like they’ve got Kevin Durant, but also look at what Phoenix did the last couple years. So, there’s that. But fine, put Houston at four. I I get the argument. The roster should be better. It should be deeper. They had a great off season. Um and and and you could argue that their roster got better. Well, the Wolves at best stayed the same. If if it it’s hard to argue that that second year TJ Shannon and and what’s effectively second year Jaylen Clark and second year Rob Dillingham will be better than what Nik Alexander Walker gave them last year. And I’ve made the case on the show, I think the upside is certainly greater. Like I think TJ Shannon could end up being like a six-man type scoreer off the bench. That’s entirely on the table. So they, don’t get me wrong, they could be better. They very well could be better. I think they’ll win more games the regular season than they did last year. I haven’t made my prediction yet, but we talked over unders a few weeks ago, and I believe the Wolves are at 50 and a half. Minnesota, I’m going to take the over on that. They’re going to win more games, but is the roster clearly better than it was 12 months ago? I don’t think that the answer is yes. Well, 12 months ago, h 12 months ago would have been before the cat trade. We’ll call it 10 months ago. Um, right after the cat trade or or nine months ago or whatever, I don’t think it’s better because a known quantity is better than an unknown. And for no matter what we think of TJ Shannon, we knew what Nik Alexander Walker was last year and he was that guy. So, it’s hard to argue the roster is better. And and and all that to say, I understand the argument that Houston right now could be ranked slightly ahead of Minnesota. I would pick Houston at four. I’d put Minnesota at five. Um I don’t think there’s anyone I Well, I I say this, but clearly there are a couple people that would rank the Clippers or the Lakers ahead of Minnesota. That seems crazy to me. Ranking the Clippers or Lakers ahead of Minnesota. Um and so actually, now that I’ve said all this, the Houston or the um the ESPN ranking is the closest to what I what I would have. They have OKC. They’ve got Houston too, which is nuts. They’ve got Denver three, which is too high, and then Cleveland in the Knicks, Minnesota at six. I’d put Minnesota at six at five, excuse me. And I’d put I’d put Denver at six. And then I would go Clippers. I’d probably go Warriors ahead of Lakers still because I think the the high end of Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler when they’re healthy, even though they’re old, is still better given the rest of that roster and still having Draymond and still having um you know, a deeper roster than the Lakers. They just do. Even though Luca is the best player of all these guys, I don’t like the Lakers roster. So, I would actually I would go Minnesota 5. I would go Denver 6. I would go probably Clippers 7, Warriors 8, then Lakers 9, and then Pistons 10 is probably how I would handle that. And then you get like a bunch of these teams like Detroit obviously ascending, but they’ve got weird, you know, weird stuff with the uh the Malik Beasley thing. Although, I like what they did. I I like I think I like Caris Levert as a fit for that team more than Tim Hardaway. Um I I think Duncan Robinson it adds an element that they needed. They obviously needed some more shooting especially with no Malik Beasley. Um so I like them there and then and then you get into the Dallas Atlanta’s Milwaukee. I’d probably put Milwaukee and Memphis ahead of Dallas and Atlanta. Um but all that to say I’d have Minnesota at number five and I think anywhere between four and eight is too low. Anywhere from four to six is fine. you if you really want to argue Minnesota ahead of Houston, I I could buy that. If you want to argue Denver ahead of Minnesota, uh I could buy that, but I wouldn’t put them any lower than six. That would that seems crazy to me. They’ve gone to consecutive conference finals. Their best player is getting better. Their second best player was great for two-thirds of the playoffs last year, threequarters of the playoffs last year. And uh and and then their third and fourth best players, I mean, I guess Rudy would be third best, but then you go to Jade McDaniels, he’s improving. He’s ascending. The bench is young and ascending. Nas is still getting better. Um, it seems crazy to me to rank them any lower than fifth. Um, that’s that’s my take on it. All right, let’s talk about Dante Dvenenzo. What’s up next in the offseason? We’ll set up all of that here next. All right, news broke on Wednesday afternoon about Dante Dincenzo. talked previously about how he had gotten Italian citizenship um just a few weeks ago and was planning to play with Italy in Eurob Basket and other upcoming events. uh Italy, the the basketball federation in Italy announced on Wednesday that he would not be playing in Euroba due to a quote physical issue. And then Dante Dvenenzo posted a video online and said that he couldn’t play and he also called it a physical issue and then of course lots of quick reporting as everybody started to panic. Rightfully so. What I like the other thing is by the way the spokesperson for the Italian Basketball Federation said uh well I’ll just read his quote. is uh transcribed onto uh the hoops rumors website from uh a press conference I guess the national team coordinator in Italy said on July 21st we received clearance from the Timberwolves for Dante to play. Dante was resuming training but between the 22nd and 23rd he felt discomfort in his big toe which had already cost him a month out this season. Of course that was the injury remember he suffered in the final minute against Golden State. He ended up missing a month. This was he got hurt right after he joined the starting lineup, right after he started playing better and then ended up missing a month which with what was essentially a turf toe injury that of course we see all the time in football. Uh he says we set a deadline yesterday which would have been the 29th and according to doctors and specialists we were talking about 3 to four months of therapy so it wasn’t possible. He sent the video to show that we’re on the same page. That’s how it went. So obviously Timber’s fans see the three to four months and uh that’s terrifying. John Krinski quickly though of the Athletic jumped onto X and said it’s precautionary and then of course people were like ah you know 3 to four months takes him out of training camp and he said no he’ll be ready and then people said uh the Wolves shut him down he said no. It it certainly sounds like this was completely above board and it’s just you know Dante was playing to play the Wolves were playing to let him. This is remember this is a different front office than the Wancho stuff. Remember Wancho Hernang Gomez with Gerson Rosas years back and the way the Wolves treated the situation with Spain and Hernang Gomez was mad and the Spanish team was mad and everybody was angry that was coming out of co that was just kind of a whole weird thing. Um, and this it sounds like he was cleared. He had the citizenship. The wolf said he could play. He tweaked the toe. And if it is just precautionary because anything happened, undoubtedly um I I don’t know why the Italy the Italian guy would say three to four months unless he’s just like overselling it to to make it sound better to people in Italy. I don’t know. Maybe doing Dante a favor in that regard. But um clearly training camp is in like less than two months. So if if that’s really true, then obviously there’s a bigger issue. But John Kruki says it’s precautionary. So undoubtedly they’re just going to say, “All right, don’t you know, rest it for a month or six weeks or whatever.” This is me just guessing. And then, you know, get ready for training camp. Uh and in whatever you’re doing training wise, if it’s just shooting or if it’s just, you know, other workouts, weight training, etc., and you’re not cutting and running and, you know, scrimmaging and actually playing basketball, there’s going to be a lot less risk to reinjure that toe. And so, I’m sure that the Wolves are like, “Hey, man, don’t play in games.” And and I’m sure he’s on board with that. And, uh, you know, just make sure that you you get it right by the time training camp starts. And maybe the Wolves take it slow, you know, to start training camp and preseason with Dante. Um, obviously not worth risking anything until until things really matter. So, not as scary as it looked initially because like this thing coming out in real time on X is is is definitely scary, but obviously something to keep an eye on and of course will be a question that will be asked of the Timberwolves end of uh Dante when training camp gets going in uh mid late September. So, next up on this show, we’re going to talk more about the player rank. Uh, of course I mentioned I’m going to be submitting that list today to Locked On and and we’ll talk about our our Locked On NBA top 100 rank. I’ll uh likely have a guest on to talk a little bit about that um once that list comes out here in the next couple of weeks. So, that’s something we’ll cover. I’m also going to have a guest on next week to talk about the Timberwolves final roster spots, what some of the options are for Minnesota. um guys who they could who they may have some interest in adding if it makes more sense to add a big or a wing forward or a true point guard or you know combo like what type of player with the Wolves roster the way it is they know who the top 10 guys in the rotation are. Does it make sense to get another guy who could bump down some guys, you know, a rung org or two on that ladder like a Malcolm Brogden or does it make sense to get somebody who knows they’re a bench big or do they not need a big because of what Barn showed in summer league? Um, you know, what’s what’s the take there for Minnesota? So, we’ll break all that down next week. Um, we are going to do we are going to move probably to to three to four shows a week for the month of August. So, we won’t be every day Monday through Friday, but we’ll have a minimum of three shows and most weeks we’ll have four for you throughout the month of August. How do the Minnesota Timberwolves rank against the rest of the NBA after most of the offseason movement has wrapped up? Not all power rankings agree on where the Wolves stand. Should the Lakers and Clippers actually be ranked ahead of the Timberwolves? What about the Rockets with the addition of Kevin Durant? Also, Donte DiVincenzo is injured and will not play for Italy at EuroBasket.
