Golden State Have Been Offered Malik Monk For Jonathan Kuminga By Sacramento Kings
I know the Warriors have said they’re not interested in any signing trades for Jonathan Kaminga, but can we interest you in Malik Monk, says the Sacramento Kings? What’s the catch? All these things brought to you by me. My name’s Charlie Walter, former 957. That’s the flagship, the Golden State Warriors. Also cover the team on TV for CBS News Bay Area call letters KPIX. Guest today, it’s Mike Logangh. And to those out there that love Jonathan Kaminga and did not like Loganov’s very sincere takes on the matter a couple days ago, it’s time for you guys to you can go ahead and loging off. Uh Mike, how we doing, man? He’s a uh former hooper at Kobe College on the East Coast. Played his college basketball or high school basketball at St. Ignatius in the city. San Mateo, born and bred, diehard Warriors guy, seasoned ticket holder. You can find him just screaming at the opposition throughout the season. and uh you know calling out defenses. He’s he’s he’s that high when it comes to his IQ in the game of basketball today to break down a few trades. You ready to get into it, man? Chuck, I’m ready. It’s a beautiful day in the city by the Bay. It’s uh it’s a great time to talk some dubs. We got some news. We’re not just pontificating. We can break some things down. Let’s have some fun, man. Let’s do it. The question is whether we are nearing the end on this thing. Now, last we heard, and I don’t believe it. I don’t think you believe it. I don’t think anyone but a working brain believes that the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kaminga can be salvaged and they’re going to be together this upcoming season. But last we heard, the Warriors were not looking into any signing trades. They’ve shut the thing down. Their plan is for Kaminga to either take this 2-year 22.5 million deal or to take the qualifying offer and they expect Kaminga to be ready to go and to be a part of this team. But a new wrinkle has come out. Sam Amik reporting that the Sacramento Kings have offered a three-year $63 million deal for Kaminga. That’s actually $1.5 million less at least the first season than he would make for the Golden State Warriors if he were to sign this two-year deal. The Suns have obviously offered four years 90 million. Suns have nothing that the Warriors want. We know that the Warriors turned down the Kings poo poo platter of Devin Carter and Dario Sarge, but they’ve upped the ante. They say, “Can we interest you in a little Malik Monk and a 2030 first round pick?” That pick is lottery protected. The Warriors have insisted the pick be unprotected. If that pick didn’t convey, then the Warriors would get the least favorable of the Kings or San Antonio’s first round pick in 2031. So, is that the holdup? Is it a Kings unprotected pick? If they unprotect this pick, do we have ourselves a done deal? Now, overall, I like Malik Monk. But here’s the issue. It would require freeing up some space in order for the Warriors to stay under the first apron. That means they’d have to move Buddy Healed or Moses Moody for apron purposes. Most likely Buddy Healed. You’re also taking another guard where a wing’s very much needed. I will say though, Malik Monk fits the bill for a lot of things you’re looking for. Malik Monk is exactly the player, the archetype of player that the Warriors need. He’s someone that we talked about about a month ago, I think, Chuck, on the first day of free agency when we were praying for some news. And you said, “Hey, Mike, who do you think the Warriors should try and get their hands on? What’s the kind of player that they need?” And I said that a month ago in July, and I’m saying it now in August, Malik Monk is the exact kind of player the Warriors need. He’s a play finisher. He’s a creator. He can take the ball off the bounce. He’s a secondary ball handler to Steph, too, because Steph’s getting up there. He’s still producing, obviously. He’s an allNBA player, but having Monk who can kind of take the ball up the court so Steph doesn’t have to do it every single time. Just another trustworthy pair of hands out there. And I think if the Warriors can get that unprotected pick, I think you just hammer it and you say, “Let’s do it.” And a little a little Palpatine and Revenge of the Sith, do it. And you just get it done. Malik’s electrifying, man. He’s a highf flyier. He’ll throw down some ridiculous cram jobs. Uh he’s a microwave scorer. And I just remember the first game that I ever saw him play. It was his freshman year, his only year of college. They played, I believe it was North Carolina, who they ended up losing to in the Elite 8 on that Luke May shot, but it was um it was North Carolina and it was that team that Monk was on with De’aran Fox and and Bam Adabio. And Monk went for like 45 points. And he’s done that in the NBA. He’s gone for 45. Like he has the ability to put the ball in the basket in an elite rate. He’s a very good passer. He’s really good at like the snake dribble mid-range game where he kind of works well off ball screens, keeps his man behind him and then, you know, goes with the double option of am I going to pull up and knock down a little mid-range or am I going to use my float game to his advantage. He’s good at that. The three-point shot has been very iffy. the exact stats for his career, he shot at 35% last year, just 32% on volume. He was taken nearly 6 and a half a game. Um, but he’s had good seasons. He he shot 39% back in 2022. Had a very good 2023 season for Sacramento where he was fifth and six man of the year voting. He’s coming off a season though where he scored the most points of his career at 26 years of age. He averaged 17 points last season for Sacramento, 86% from the line, shot at uh 43% from the floor, 5 a half assists per game compared to two and a half turnovers per game. So my question is with a bunch of these attributes that Monk brings in. And defensively, he’s he’s iffy, but he’s also on a team that just sucks at defense, right? And maybe you can hide him a little bit if he’s in the lineup with with Draymond and with Jimmy. My question is I’ve seen all over the internet much more people shooting this down saying don’t be idiots Golden State as compared to kind of going your route and saying just do it. Now a lot of the holdup was the Buddy Heel thing. People are saying you can’t get rid of Butard. You can’t break up the Jimmy Butler the the Robin and Alfred dynamic. Your take is kind of, hey, if you get rid of Buddy Heel, you can figure it out and bring someone else in that maybe fits a a forward position a little bit more and Malik Monk adds some shooting. Does that nullify the the Anthony Melton? Does he still make sense? Like, how does this all work out to you if you do indeed um decide to make this trade if you’re if you’re Mike? I I think it’s you have to think about Malik Monk in the context of the other moves that that you just outlined, right? So Malik Monk is I think a really great fit. He fits a role that the Warriors need. On the topic of his defense real quick before we start talking about the other chess pieces, the good news is is he’s an athlete, right? As as we know, he’s fast, he’s athletic, he’ll compete, which is important. Um and so I think on the defensive end, we can kind of think of him as, you know, maybe a little bit negative beyond a neutral, but he’s not a defensive civ. if you will. Um, and then if we think about bringing in Malik Monk and what does that do to the wider team? Does that mean that the Dubs still go pick up DeAnthony Melton? I think probably they probably bring back Melt. They’re probably then going to go get Horford. Um, and so then you’re thinking about a starting lineup potentially of Steph Melt, Jimmy, Draymond, and Al Horford, which is a pretty damn good starting lineup. And then coming off the bench, let’s assume that they deal healed or Moody in this transaction as well to free up the space and make the contracts work. And then if off the bench, you’re having, you know, Malik Monk as your sixman pods as a combo guard, a big man like, you know, TJD QP and then whoever’s left over from Buddy Heield or Moses Moody or if they decide to go out and get someone if the numbers work like an Amir coffee as well to be that 3 and D wing off the bench. A little bit more youth, a little bit more athleticism. I think you’re looking at a pretty competitive team. Does it put us over the threshold to look at the teams like the OKC’s, the Denvers of the world? Probably not. We’re probably still looking in that four to six range. But all all all of that the Warriors need and that’s been proven over the years is just a puncher chance, right? I mean, you look at what Steph did. Do you think anyone really leading into the 2022 season thought, “Okay, yeah, Steph is gonna, you know, the Warriors are going to win the championship. They’re they’re favorites. They’re going to pull this thing off. putting my money where my mouth was, man. I I put a little bet in on FanDuel and cash that thing. But I want to say that I put it in after like the 18 and two start. I don’t think I did it in the fall. But but it’s the point is though all all the Warriors need is just a shot, you know, like are you really gonna are you really going to bet against Steph, Draymond, Jimmy, and then if my question is what’s the alternative? What’s your alternative, Mike? If you’re not you can’t go take take that Suns deal. No, you don’t take that Suns deal. Royce O’Neal. We don’t need another 32year-old wing out there. Don’t do that. The Warriors also don’t need Nick Richards in my opinion. I think he doesn’t really fit. It’s like Nick Richards is what, you know, maybe a better version of TJD realistically or maybe has a higher upside than TJD. Don’t think different TJD. It’s I don’t think we really need that sort of player though. That’s not the big gap in the lineup in my opinion. So the Phoenix deal, I don’t think you take it. the Devin Carter Sarage deal, that’s a no. I think the best value, the most reliable player that you’re gonna get for Kamingo right now in this market is Malik Monk. You hammer it, you say yes, you move on. And because ultimately, you want to get this thing resolved before training camp starts. You want to get rid of this angst in the locker room. And we know this has been going on now for what, two and a half years. Yeah. I mean, let’s uh let’s dissect something that’s extremely interesting. Coming up on Locked on Warriors, the Kings actually put a player on the table that is a six-time all-star that averaged over 20 points per game last season. The Warriors completely shot it down. Very interesting. We’re talking Demar D Rozan. Coming up on Locked on Warriors. Today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time. All right, so Jimmy Butler and Buddy Heield had a fantastic relationship going towards the end of the season. Now, if you would have said, “Buddy Heield has to be thrown in this deal in what, February of last season,” I think 98% of Warriors fans would have been like, “Take him. Take him. We’re we’re good.” But recency bias comes into play. And frankly, Buddy had months of the season where he was really good and the lasting image of Buddy was hitting some big shots in big moments. And it was that secret sauce that we talked about. Warriors were like 18- one when he scored more than 18 points in a game. That’s real. However, Monk gives it to you a little more consistently, 17 points per game. Someone that gives you a consistent 20 piece all the time is Demar D Rozan. In fact, Demar D Rozan a season ago averaged 22 points per game. He’s averaged more than 20 every single season since 2013. He shot at 47% from the floor a season ago, four and a half assists. Um, always shoots it upwards of 50% from the floor. Not a good three-point shooter. The Warriors said, “No, we’re good on that.” Which is a smart organization in my opinion. Not that they’ve been smart with this Jonathan Kaminga situation, but it’s smart turning down a player that doesn’t fit your system at all. Um, if you’re getting rid of Kaminga because he’s a ball stopper, you’re not bringing in another guy who’s hunting shots and who’s also a ball stopper. So, you’re nodding your head. I’m going to go ahead and uh assume that you’re agreeing with me that Demar Rozan just wouldn’t have been a fit. Nice on paper, but not a fit. That’s correct. Vertical head not indicative of the yes there, Chuck. We’re we’re in a chord here. think uh I think D Rozan beyond just the the ball stopping and the ball dominant and kind of the shot hunting he also eats up similar space to where Jimmy likes to operate and Draymond does and I I don’t it just it’s not a fit that would work and equally do we want to get as again we’ve both said this people some somehow have selective hearing u when we talk about Kaminga and the fact that we think he’s a very talented young prospect he probably will be an all-star at some point in his career if it gets to the right place. Um, but right now, not what the team needs. And are you really going to give up a young prospect with high upside for an aging star, another aging star who’s definitely on the back nine in D Rozan? You’re not going to do that. Just doesn’t make sense. Yeah. The the Kaminga things as simple as to to me, if you if you you could have rectified it and made it work, then it would be a completely different story. But the writing’s been on the wall for a minute, man. I mean, really, I thought maybe there’d be some talks of extensions if he came back and messed well with Jimmy Butler and it was a different story. But after everything that happened, whether you want to blame Kerr, whether you want to blame the front office for not trading him, whether you want to blame Kaminga for not doing the things that that Kerr is asking of him, it doesn’t matter at the end of the day. But the fact of the matter is that it didn’t work. It didn’t work. and uh JK doesn’t really want to be in the Bay Area. And if if a player doesn’t want to be there, very little does it turn around. It has before in the past. Specifically in football, I feel like there’s a lot of times where players hold out and um you think they’re never going to play there again. The bag’s thrown their way and it’s a completely different story and they all lived happily ever after. But in basketball, usually when you want out, you get out. Yeah. I I think I think it’s an untenable situation. I think both parties need to just move on. Um, and I like what you said there, too, where it doesn’t really matter who’s at fault, right? Whether ultimately, you know, if the the judicial courts of the universe deem Steve Kerr is at fault and he’s guilty of the situation or if it’s Leub or if it’s Kaminga himself, whoever it is, right? Whoever is at fault for the situation going ary and not working out, that doesn’t really matter. the reality of the situation, if we want to just be pragmatic in our analysis, is the fact that it’s not working. He does not want to come back to Golden State. Regardless of what people say in the comments, he does not want to come back. He wants to be moved. He’s been meeting with other teams discussing contracts as we brought up today in Sacramento. I think that’s again indicative of the fact he does not want to come here. He posted that Instagram of saying, “I’ll bet on myself.” And he’s turned down the Warriors offers. So to all of our listeners who disagree with us, that’s fine. You can disagree, but equally, what are we going to do? Just bring him back and let him ride Pine. The situation hasn’t worked out. You ship him. If you can get Malik Monk, who how old is Malik? He’s 26, right? He’s four years older than Kaminga. I I think he’s 26. He’s ending his prime really as a secondary ball handler. 27. Yeah. Play 26 year old last year. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. So 26, 27, entering his prime with, you know, youthful athleticism, relying, and he plays hard and he’s fun. Warriors fans would love him, man. Oh, he would be, he would be great in our system. Can you imagine him with the advantage creation that Jimmy and Steph could give him, the amount of open shots that he’d get to catch and shoot threes, or the amount of closeouts he’d be able to attack? It would be I mean, it it would be Monk Airlines, baby. He’d be getting up. It’d be awesome. I’d love to see that. Yeah. One thing that you kind of buried in all this though because if you lose Buddy Heield, you lose a shooter. If you lose Moses Moody, you lose a wing. Two things kind of connected. Amir Coffee is a name that you really like. You think that if you brought in the coffee monk combo, little little coffee monk, Monk Coffee, I feel like that’s actually a real coffee shop out there, Monk Coffee. If you brought that in and then got rid of let’s say Kaminga Moody and just said see you to the 2021 NBA draft 202 whichever uh draft it was 21 21 21 draft that the Warriors drafted those two in. You just got rid of them and uh brought in those two. You like that? You like that swap? I’m in. I love it. I love it. I love it. I’m in. I mean Moody I I My thing with Moody is I like Moody. I think he made strides last season over the course of the regular season. I think his shooting woss in the postseason, as we found out later on, were probably due to a wrist injury. I mean, pretty tough to shoot a basketball if your wrist is hurt. So, give him the benefit of the doubt. I think Moody’s proven to be a very reliable role player in the NBA, but Moody isn’t someone that can’t be replaced is the unfortunate reality for Moody. That’s not because he doesn’t play hard. That’s not because he hasn’t been working on his game. It’s just the reality of the situation is his production, his role can be filled by another NBA role player. Um, and if that role player is air coffee, I think that you’re pretty excited about that replacement. Uh, moreover, if Buddy Heield goes, you know, he’s ultimately people may not also like to believe it, and it may not always seem like it, but you know, Buddy’s been one of the best three-point shooters since he entered the league. It’s like Steph number one, like James Harden, and then Buddy Healed, I think, for the most threes in the last what, five seasons, you know. So, he’s literally one of the best shooters in the NBA, but he’s also streaky. I think Jimmy brings out the best in him because I think Jimmy also, you know, gives some confidence to the to a role player, which I mean, even speaking from my playing career in college, when you have one of the best players in the team who’s getting fired up, if you’re making the right play, you just play with so much more confidence. So, I think that helped bring out the best in Buddy. And equally though, too, if we have to move Buddy, then maybe we’re going to have a monk drinking some coffee and eating a melt. You know, if you’re getting me DeAnthony Meltton, Malik Monk, and Amir Coffee, I’m pretty happy about that, to be honest with you. Have an Al, not an Alfred. Have an Al. Um, coming up, we’re going to answer three questions. One of the big ones, what happens if Jonathan Kaminga takes the qualifying offer? All these things debated on Locked on Dubs. All right, couple things I want to get to before we answer that question, which is what happens if Jonathan Kaminga actually signs the qualifying offer. But, um, I sent you this earlier and it was an article back from the 2023 playoffs against the Kings. Remember before game seven there was that passionate speech by Steph Curry and the article was according to multiple sources in the private session. Curry told the team he believed in them that they had enough to win. He asked for their trust in return. He assured them he could deliver victory if they all bought in. He implored them to put all their feelings aside, which sources with knowledge of the locker room felt was a message directed at Jordan Pool and Jonathan Kaminga, who might have been unhappy for reasons such as playing time and role and lock into the unified mission. We’ve been having this conversation with Jonathan Kaminga since he was 20 years old in 2023. We’ve been having this conversation for a while that he has not been happy. So, it would make sense 1,000% that he’s looking elsewhere. Again, the issue for him is the Warriors retain his rights. This is the NBA. For those of you that hop in the comments and say, “Just let him loose. You’re being mean.” Like, this is We’re talking 7.9 and 22.5 million. Like, he doesn’t have a choice. If he wants to go play in Shanghai, he has a choice. He doesn’t have to play for the Warriors. Otherwise, if they say you’re playing for us, he’s either playing for them or he can, you know, pull a Jimmy and he he doesn’t have to show up, whatever, I think that would hurt his value. The question here becomes, what if JK actually signs the qualifying offer? Again, I think it’d be so dumb. It’d be a middle finger to the Warriors who then could basically just say, “Benches that way. D Santos just took your spot all season.” Some are firm believers, firm believers that he has enough on tape to get 20 plus million without playing. I just can’t fathom it. I think he’s overplaying his hand in my opinion. But what is your take on this? Whether Jonathan Kaminga would actually sign the qualifying offer or if this is all just one big bluff. So the qualifying offer is I think for both parties the worst outcome, right? Because then if you’re if you’re Kaminga, you’re not. Especially, let me let me add this in real quick. He just he just arrived to play in the Congo’s national team as they’re getting ready for Afro Basket this month. Knock on wood because I don’t wish anything bad to to anyone, but what happens in the middle of contract negotiations and maybe this is close to over and that’s why he’s playing in this, but if he’s truly going to hold out until October, what happens if he goes and plays in this league and tears an Achilles and and all that’s left is the qualifying offer? I mean, that’s a disaster. That’s that would be the that’s that’s the worst outcome for everyone involved. We hope that doesn’t happen. Um, and I I think I’ll start with the the Afro Basket competition because I think that means that we’re getting pretty close to this saga concluding. That’s what that means to me. I think that’s a signal that we can interpret there because while his agent um in my opinion doesn’t seem to have the best grasp of negotiation skills, market valuation analysis or benchmarking and ability to kind of get things done efficiently for his clients. Um and he loves to argue on Twitter with, you know, folks like myself and other commentators. So, I don’t necessarily know if you want that that kind of an agent, but hey, that’s that’s Jonathan’s choice. That’s not Michael’s choice. Um, but I would imagine that his agent would advise him, ah, I wouldn’t go play in this thing unless you know, you’re really unless we’re done with the contract negotiations because if you get hurt, then we’re really screwed. So, I imagine that his agent is wise enough to give him advice of only go compete and play in that and play in that tournament if the contract signed and if we’re getting close. So, I imagine that means that the deal is going to get done. And then equally too, going back to the the point of um you know, what happens if he does sign the QO? I mean, that I think that tanks his value. The Warriors are going to say, “Here, go ride some pine.” And he’s not going to see burn. And I think that it’s a terrible outcome because then the Warriors aren’t going to be able to get anything for him. He’s just going to walk on both sides, right? Yeah. Exactly. It’s like, “Yeah, here here’s the bird. go enjoy it. And the other thing too though is, you know, now here we go. Get ready. Um, if listeners are expecting me to say something nice about the situation, about Kaminga, it’s probably not going to be what you’re going to get right now. But going back to a little bit of my rant and my pontification last week, Chuck, this is a choice that he’s making. It’s a choice. This goes back to the playoffs in 2023 in the game seven when Steph put up 50 points. people forget what a game, what a series. Um, and if Steph was saying it then and Kamingo was called out then, then that means that this has been going on for a long time. And if Steph isn’t happy, that’s probably not a good thing considering your AllNBA player, the best player in franchise history, still one of the best top one of the best players in the league. If he’s unhappy, that’s probably not a good thing. And that probably means that there’s something wrong. If there’s smoke, there’s fire. And if this has been going on for over two years now, then it’s that that is one, I think, on the Warriors for not being able to make a move sooner, right? That’s why the Warriors are kind of as an organization being held hostage by the situation, but equally, it’s also on Kaminga for not buying in to what the team needs him to do. And so at that point, if you’re signing the QO, then like you said, there’s going to be screws, fus, birds, and colorful language all around. And he’s going to sit on the bench. He’s going to tank his value. And then people are also going to wonder, other teams when he goes out to free agency are going to wonder, oh, hey, can I rely on you to play the role that we need or are you going to be a preadonna? Are you going to try and make the whole situation, the whole team about you? And can I actually rely on you? Because if the Warriors can’t rely on you, why should we? Case in point. All right. So, question that I have, question three, final question of the day that I need you to answer, Mike. Malik Monks, I mean, not extremely young, but he’s 27 years of age. So, he’s a young, talented player, and the Kings are offering a first round pick. That is what the Warriors have asked for, apparently. Now, how good and how young does that player have to be? We don’t know. Plus, apparently they want, you know, unprotected first round picks. Um, they don’t want the protected ones. But the Kings, I imagine they’re thinking like, we offered you our top 15 pick from a season ago and Devin Carter. That that has to classify as young talent, shoulder issue or not, and then we also offered you Malik Monk. Now, he’s not good enough. Neither of them are good enough. It doesn’t actually sound like what you’re looking for. you’re actually willing to take that. That’s kind of how it feels to a certain degree because the Kings have now given him two separate offers that both include kind of pieces of what the Warriors want. And maybe the the it needs to be unprotected and maybe that player needs to be better than Malik Monk or or younger than Malik Monk, I should say, and better than Devin Carter, I should say. I don’t know though what the Warriors are necessarily looking for here. That’s why it makes me think that this Monk one could be the the last one. And I do like Malik Monk a lot. Um the two for one special where you’re getting rid of Kaminga and Buddy Heel just to bring in Malik Monk face value I don’t necessarily love. But other moves can be made. The big question that I have is how it affects kind of the DA Anthony Melton here because they do feel a little redundant as secondary ball handlers. Sure Melton’s a better defender. Uh, sure. Monk is more of a microwave scorer. Do the two of them together work with Brandon Pajimsky? Could Brandon Pajimky be involved in in some sort of a deal? I don’t know how all this works out, but you would imagine that the Warriors are stewing this thing over right now and uh that they are seriously at least listening to the offer at hand because Malik Monk put up 17 a game and uh he he’s different in the sense because Kaminga puts up 17 a game too, right? But he’s different in the sense of Kaminga that uh he just has a completely different style of play per se. Exact Exactly. I I think well going back to the transaction I think the move that the Warriors made saying we’re not interested in signing trade was a bit of gamesmanship. U because once that happened then the poo poo platter from Sacramento was immediately removed from the table and there’s no conversation about Devon about Devin Carter or Dario Saritz right now. And then boom, what happens? Oh, hey, we’ll give you Malik Monk in a first round pick. And now the Warriors, if they say, “Ah, we don’t want that.” That could again be gamesmanship to say, “Okay, we know you want Kaminga. You know what we want. We can make this thing work.” I think I think it’s a little bit of just hard ball negotiation. What if they got Monk and Keon Ellis out of this thing and said, “Forget you to the first round pick and somehow got Keon Ellis.” That now that would be that would be a very very interesting outcome, you know, because then you’re looking at someone like Keon. Kings, they they make dumb decisions before, but I think that they’re happy with and some of the moves that he’s made and um if he were to make that move, frankly, hopefully they’re not listening to the podcast and I’m giving them ideas, but that would be horrific on their part. It would be awful. It’d be awful. It’d be awful. And Kaminga is the next Kobe like some of the stands think. I again Well, here here’s the thing though, too, right? I mean, now again, let’s just let’s think about this. Like if you’re Kaminga, why why also do why why do you want to go to Sacramento? I mean, think about they they have so many guys that just chuck on that team. Lavine, Chucks, D Rozan, Chucks, Schroeder, Chucks, Sabonis, Chucks. Like, I mean, I don’t know. I don’t know where he thinks he’s going to get all these shot attempts. He’s loved living in the Bay Area, Mike, and he knows he can live in Vakavville. He can live about halfway there and avoid some of that traffic. Actually, you’re not avoiding the traffic in Vakavville, but I mean, you’re someone that’s not from the country, right? And, uh, maybe he really likes Northern California. You got to factor in people’s lives, whatever. But, uh, it’s truly California. They’re basically saying, “Hey, you come in and you’re going to be our dude.” And that to him is just like, “Let’s go.” Because Steve Curry has not said that to him at any point. You’re going to be our dude. Exactly. and and look, so I just I think I don’t think it would frankly really work out for Jonathan in Sacramento from the standpoint of just a roster construction. I think he would become frustrated again, frankly. Um, but if you get Monk and you get Melton, I don’t think that they’re necessarily redundant because they would be asked to play different roles. You know, Melton would be your point of attack defender for, you know, the best guard on the team, right? Right. And then if you’re slotting in Horford, assuming that he’s going to sign with the Warriors, as all indications for the last 30 days have said as such, um you’re looking at a pretty good you’re you’re getting a really good starting lineup there from a defensive perspective, right? Because like people people also, you know, I think they really uh undervalue Steph’s contribution on the defensive end because Steph is always engaged. She’s always closing out. He’s always playing help defense. He’s not just sitting there and plotting on defense and playing traffic cone. He’s he’s engaged. He’s a pretty like I would say a slight plus defender from his ability to play within the scheme. Um but he’s just limited by size and that’s a stretch. But right, I mean on on from a scheme basis though is what I’m saying, right? Like within the components of the team like obviously yes, if you put him on LeBron and LeBron lowers his shoulder, Steph’s screwed, right? But like from the standpoint of okay, is he engaged? Does he close out? Is he in passing lanes? Yes, he is. And so he’s not going to sit there and play with his hands down at his side and just wait to go play offense is the point. Um, but if you have Melton, Jimmy, Draymond, and Horford, that’s a pretty damn good defensive lineup. And then off the bench, you just tell Pods, “Hey, go be the spark plug from, you know, a hustle and effort standpoint and knock down some shots and maybe create some for others.” And you tell Monk, “Hey, when you’re out there, when it’s like you and Jimmy, like just put up as many as you want.” And he would probably say, “That sounds fantastic.” I love That’s what Kur That’s what Kerr’s saying in the press release. But, you know, he’s pulling pods aside in the in the tunnel on the way out to the first game and he’s like, “Pod’s 15 shots. 15 shots. We want 15 from you, BP.” Hey, Mike, good stuff. You’re still the guy, man. Enjoy the weekend. You’re the dude. That’s Mike Logangh. You can hear him from time to time on KMBBR. Chuck Walter. This is Locked On Warriors. Check us out wherever you get your audio podcast and on YouTube.
Malik Monk and a first-round pick for Jonathan Kuminga? This is the best Sacramento has offered the Golden State Warriors in a sign and trade, but the pick being lottery protected has reportedly led to the stalemate. Plus, why financials wouldn’t allow it to be a straight swap, and the players who would be on the move to make it work. Chuck Walter and Mike Loginoff break it all down.

It’s been a month and the deal went from Carter and Saric to monk and a pick. What did Phoenix say? A bunch of second picks they don’t have?
Monk off the bench behind curry can get you through the playoffs.
That would never happen
You guys spent the last 2 years badmouthing Kuminga now you want the farm for something you won’t use? That makes no sense
Wtf is a cram job?
Where is Kolsky?? Im gagging!
#robots
Wth is a cram job?
Mike long mouth is here again
He’s a dog.🐕
Mike, u say Kuminga is not good. Since u are better than him why didn't u continue playing in the NBA? Big head Mike,lo g ya lo g mouth
Oh not this guy 🙄 I thought it was another guy. It's the dude who has a personal thing against kuminga
Bro you guys are not even playing him. And you guys are asking somebody who has earned minutes? Why am I going to trade a guy that I value for a guy that you don't value?
You were off on the game that Monk went off for 40 something against North Carolina it was when Kentucky played North Carolina earlier in the season not in the NCAA tournament
No way melton would start over monk
Trade Buddy for monk better!
Keon and monk,,, deal
For all the Warriors fans who don't understand the salary cap rules, if you trade Kuminga for Monk, you will have to give up pieces like Hood and Moody to stay under the apron.
If I hear Mike's IQ and his analysis I was what kind of IQ is that.
Malik Monk almost always plays well against the warriors, so this swap serves two purposes, I wanted to keep JK, but if he does not want to play for kerr, you gotta get something reasonable so you can move on with the rest of the roster. Still the Dubs will need a taller wing as Monk is another guard.
Hosts be bad mouthing kuminga for a player with almost the exact same stats lol. Cant make this up. Kerr will bench him too.
Kolsky need his own Channel for depressed fan over this Kuminga saga
The Warriors are self destructing because nobody has the ball to get rid of Draymond Green. All the gymnastics with aprons and cap space when all they should’ve done is just hold Draymond accountable and get rid of him.
just take Devin and Malik Monk. it gives a scoring and gets this over with monk can score especially when Jimmy and Steph slow he is a viable option
I think Chuck is trying to write the end of the story instead of letting it play out then rating the Warriors. I'm not defending JK or not. I'm saying the Warriors don't have to adhere to Chuck's (or most fans these days with the sites and the insta-reaction and talking heads.)
Sure. The larger picture, the monday morning QBing tells us there is certainly Chuck a point to be made around the "Dubs would have got more for JK in trade earlier," but now the "stress" from that just resides sitting there above all that's still in play and working itself out re JK.
Then pundits do what they do and get ahead of themselves. 1. Yes, probably could have done better for themselves and JK (which is not their responsibility although i like things when they work out for all) trading JK earlier, 2. But the reality now, Chuck, is still being worked out and in the context of sunk costs so to speak and the fact is they do still have JK and are now in this situation…..let it play out my man. Then judge it in that light (while including at that point in your explanation of your rating the deal that if they had moved him earlier, etc…but no team or GM is perfect and in the teams defense think about it..an owner who's known for liking JK…a coach who just doesn't feel JK has the hoops IQ to be what he needs at this precious moment in franchise history getting Steph and Dray another…..
The point is JK is tough to read, so thrilling and skilled yet doesn't fit the team in this unique time for a team….so they at the time probably rightfully didn't want to "undersell" on JK, and it didn't work out as well but they didn't want to lose him and still want to maximize…which they're attempting to still do, so Chuck, let them, THEN judge it.
I can’t wait to see who the Warriors blame when this new team falls flat on their faces in the West since Kuminga will gone. This is gonna be hilarious!!
Just cause Kerr couldn’t fit him in his system definitely don’t mean he’s not valuable. I wish they could hash things out and keep him – doubt that’s happening.
Kings are literally just trolling the Warriors to sabotage them. They're just going to walk away after getting bored and pick up jk in ufa. Only way something will happen is if the warriors do a fair trade. Next, they're probably going to try to trade JK for Luka and an unprotected 1st and claim they're still getting fleeced.
Completely delusional.
If it came down to Moody vs Hield (and in the vacuum of winning now for the short window left) and who to keep getting Monk and a 1st i'd go with Hield only due to win now.
Also, Moody has underwhelmed. I am open to Moody was playing hurt last year. I hope that was the case and he explodes this season.
IF that's the case then i'd let Hield go. But in win now mode then Hield we know what we have and can use it…Moody we want to believe….but he just hasn't stepped up the O and he doesn't assist much or much else other than 3 D…but he's not that good yet…i like Moody and WANT him to figure it out and think he could…but having to win how if it came down to picking who to keep out of Moody and Hield i'd go Hield (knowing that the long run that will look foolish but i'm talking next two seasons.)
They have a fucking 3&D in Knox
Yeah want a 40 yr old center thou
If the Warriors applied their same approach to LeBron’s early flaws (inefficient jumper, turnovers), he wouldn’t have had the minutes to grow into himself either. Even elite prospects make mistakes early because development takes patience and Kuminga hasn’t been given that window.
Yes I am going to bet against this team win totals. They don't even have 5 nba starters on this roster. Zero depth and super old. Recipe for complete disaster. Once Curry goes down you lose Draymond too because he is inept without Curry. Then Jimmy will give up. I am big Warriors fan but wake me up when they start the rebuild.
Great show, tonight. Keep bringing Mike on–you guys work well together.
Did they say Monk and a protected 2030 lottery pick for JK?
Wrong answer warriors dynasty was over when traded Klay and Poole.
I'm confused why can't kuminga sign a deal with a team and force golden state to match?
Hell Yes !!! Malik Monk for Kuminga !!! Warriors Championship 2026 !!! #DubNation !!!
MONK is a Baller !!! the Missing Piece For a Championship 🏆 !!!!
DeRozan would be a good fit, been saying it for years
Bunch of Kings fans in these comments lol Y’all are so trash
Make it Keegan Murray and you got a deal
The Warriors were undefeated last year when Buddy Hield scored 20 or more points
I got a serious question guys the first apron is at 195 something like that if we as team we are at 170 and if we sign monk we will be at 190 so what apron are they talking about ???
Malik Monk is only 26??? Deal should be done yesterday.
Damn I woulda took Monk. he fire af. he low key a beast. Derozan or Monk would have been sick af.
We’re gonna get stuck with JK taking the qualifying offer. Sigh.
Melton cant stay on the court. Stop it! About His defense when coming off a achillies tear. Exhibit 10 @ best.
Let JK go for Monk!
You gsw fans sounds more sorry than any other team is
